It's on like "fish on!"
Conceived from the brutal thread beating Shimmy and LittleHuntingCreek have started I've decided to try to organize a fish off. The Fall 2009 fish offs theme will be "team little bait vs. team big bait".
Here is what I am thinking;
1. The event will be formed of two teams, as said.
2. Each team will have the equal amount of people, and must need equal amounts of boats, if needed.
3. There will need to be a clear cut distinction of Lbig baitL and "small bait" and all parties will have to agree. At least the team "captains". I vote Shimmy and LHC to be, as per the bout in the other Potomac thread.
All people that want to particpate PM me or post here. The day will be the tricky part, so also include a day that will work for you.
Maybe some money involved.......????
EDIT: NO MONEY INVOLVED.
Money will put people off, a just for bragging right tourney will do.
I'm in.
No boat, Can fish AM's and anytime Sun/Mon. Also willing to take off work to be part of this huge event in * history!
Okay... So it didn't take off like I thought it would.
I thought I'd have Mike Ike and KVD fighting to get in this showdown. Dags.
cant we just have a friendly two man team tourney?
Quotecant we just have a friendly two man team tourney?
I agree. This time of the yr would prob work good for the whole big bait vs finesse theory too. Just my 2 cents tho. With fishing slowing it would be nice to get some kind of tourney going soon just for fun.
Im always down to fish
This upcoming saturday i say we hammer one out. Now, the one thing i do know is that littlehuntingcreek may not be catchin any giants recently but he sure seems to catchin alot. Definite props to him. If anyone has a chance to get the limit, it would be him. As for those who enjoy the bigger tossed baits, it could be interesting. Fun, but interesting none the less.
Maybe we initiate the rule that you keep your two biggest bass. While tossing the big bait i'm pretty sure gettin two bass alone will be a challenge. Nevertheless, this could make for some interesting results.
Biggest weight combined wins, biggest fish gets the respect, and if i don't catch any, (which could happen) then i'm sure a rematch could be planned out.
Lets start it up. I will have most of saturday to fish. I have yet to have a full day of fishing, so I'm looking forward to it nonetheless. Let's establish a list of who all wants in. So far I have;
1. Me.
2. Thai (I'm assuming)
3. JVM
4. Shimmy
5. LHC
What body of water?
Boats? maybe a place that rents Jon boats?
will the scales be the same?
well whoever my partner is better know the water that we hit because i will be worthless in terms of knowing the lakes around here. But it would be fun to hit a harder one like Burke and see how we fare out. I think quanjig might be in as well. He knows the lake pretty well it sounds like. Any other lake suggestions or should we plan on it and get 3 to 4 teams of 2 if we can? Biggest weight of two fish wins?
Just so there is no unfair advantage the proper course would be to suggest certain bodies or water and randomly generate the choice
I'm interested depending on location. i would prefer to use my own boat instead of renting one. keep me updated.
How about this;
Burke Lake (rental jon boats)
Potomac (boats could be used, or left out)
Beaverdam (no idea about boats)
Fountainhead (rentals?)
At first I though this sounded like a 'pick-up' tournament. But, the after reading through the post, I can't seem to figure it out what the plan is. Anyways, I am down to participate on the Potomac. I have a boat and mostly likely a co-angler. Hammer out some details and hopefully I can show up. I plan on fishing both Saturday and Sunday this week.
I'm down for the Potomac too. I agree, I'm not to sure what is going on with all this big bait vs. little bait stuff...Why are we only using the two bag limits? I vote for a simple two man tourney. If not everyone has live wells a picture of fish on the scale would suffice. Keep it simple, have fun and meet new people!
Sounds like fun. Here are some things to consider as well. All I have is a jon boat, co-angler welcome. Burke is no longer renting boats and niether is Fountainhead. No rentals at Beaverdam to my knowledge. If Burke is chosen as the "fishoff" site, I have a fairly detailed map of brushpiles and contours so no team feels at a disadvantage. Let's keep the ideas going, could be something we do on a regular basis as far as a get together!!
i thought yall were doin a little bait vs big bait contest or something
I think the little vs big needs to be trashed.
Also, is it safe to say we can take Burke lake of if they are not renting anymore...? as well as fountainhead and Beaverdam..? that leaves the potomac.. haha
QuoteI think the little vs big needs to be trashed. Also, is it safe to say we can take Burke lake of if they are not renting anymore...? as well as fountainhead and Beaverdam..? that leaves the potomac.. haha
thats what the whole debate was over! without that there was no reason for a fish off
who gonna catch better fish on small bait vs big bait.
someone gotta resolve that for bragging rights
I think before we do that we need to clarify what constitutes a big bait vs a little bait. The whole argument was on a three inch senko. Does that mean Team Little needs to throw things three inches and less, and Big Team throws everything above 3 inches?
Its sounding like Burke and Potomac are the main front runners. And as someone mentioned, this is something that i'm hoping we keep up in the future especially during the spawn. I am thinkin we need a head count. I have heard several people mention they would like to but it would be nice to get a bunch of teams and the rules will eventually follow. By the sounds of it, potomac might offer the best chance for numbers but it might be harder for everyone to meet up at a spot. I think Burke might be the easiest to coordinate but the hardest to fish. Either way, a head count is needed so we can start getting teams and anyone else that jumps in during the week can join in as well.
so you're all going to be lined up on the bank, or what? Sounds difficult without boats.
Sounds like we need a boat count ifin we're gonna get "out on the water"
I have a pretty big house on the warm side of lake anna that can accomidate at least a dozen people. The fishing there will be on fire next month. Maybe we can set something up. Shore fishing isnt really an option there tho since its all private owned lots. But if we had maybe 4 or 5 boats with 2 people each then it could get interesting. I much rather fish the potomac but the fishing on the warm side of lake anna is better in the winter then the potomac is. If not then maybe pre spawn we can head out there for some friendly competition. Just a thought
thats a good idea as well 420. With this little tourny, i was under the assumption that we are going to have boats. Worse case scenario is that a few teams have a small john boat or raft. I have a bigger raft that does fine and if thats the best people can bring i say we do it anyways. I'd prefer this not to be a shore fishing tourny.
In. 100% as a non boater.
I honestly don't think we have enough members with boats to make it work.
Quoteso you're all going to be lined up on the bank, or what? Sounds difficult without boats.
yes thats the plan
QuoteQuoteso you're all going to be lined up on the bank, or what? Sounds difficult without boats.yes thats the plan
lol, that's what I'm picturing. I think a boat count needs to be established before we have everyone "sign up"
if you're in I can get us a boat Dan, either the John boat or Xpress
Quoteif you're in I can get us a boat Dan, either the John boat or Xpress
I mean, if there are enough people and boats to make it fair, I'm in, I just really don't think we're going to have enough.
Worse case scenario, i have a raft with a trolling motor that can fit two if needed.
Who has boats that wouldn't mind sharing this weekend???? Doesn't need to be fancy, a john boat would work.
I have a small jon boat, probably not very stable on the river but plenty good for the res and lakes. So thats me + whoever
Is this going to happen? At the moment I am off to fish Sunday
QuoteI have a small jon boat, probably not very stable on the river but plenty good for the res and lakes. So thats me + whoever
The river was like glass today, I think a piece of plywood nailed to a couple of kegs with a trolling motor would even work out there right now as long as its not windy. I agree with Dan tho, I dont see this happening unless you mix shore teams with boat teams. So you would have maybe 3 or 4 teams in boats and a few more fishing from shore. I just saw a nice pelican boat on craigslist for 150 bux in maryland the other day. Something like that would suffice for the current non boaters. Theres tons of jon boats on craigslist right now for under 400 bux.
Alright, lets just say Burke lake. By the sounds of the types of boats that will be available, lets just say Burke. This will be the easiest to coordinate and if shore fisherman come, we can figure out how we will set the rules for this as well later on.
Burke lake, i know nothing about it but that its hard which should make this pretty fun.
Shore fisherman should have a partner as well.
Would be nice if we could get everyone in a boat, not a whole lot of productive water for shore fishing at Burke. Is there another place that gives equal access to good areas to catch quality fish?? I did figure out how to post pics, I posted the Burke fish a friend and I caught last Sunday in the tournament/ outings section.
By my count there are three boats available.
Thai can get one
Quanjig has one
Shimmy has a raft that can fit two.
And 420 angler might buy about 7-8 new boats by then. We should be good. Haha.
how realistic is it to fish from a bass boat at Burke? would i be fine with my outboard as long as i do not run it? how realistic is it to fish with a trolling motor only? I'm game for Saturday. let me know.
Quotehow realistic is it to fish from a bass boat at Burke? would i be fine with my outboard as long as i do not run it? how realistic is it to fish with a trolling motor only? I'm game for Saturday. let me know.
I've seen people use only their TM on glass boats at Burke. AFAIK this is legal.
This time last year I also saw someone idling w/ their gas motor. Do so at your own risk.
If you use the VDGIF ramp, I would not count on being able to motor a glass boat onto the trailer. Some heavy duty winching is required.
yeah, I would stay clear of the VDGIF ramp with anything other than a kayak or canoe...
thanks for the info. i'll stick with the potomac this weekend. good luck guys.
I should add that the main ramp seems like it would handle a glass boat perfectly well.
Aaron, you could easily drop your boat in Burke. You would just need to trim up the outboard when putting in. How easily you winch your boat back on the trailer is the sticky point. Lake was at full pool on Sunday, plenty of water to put a glass big boat in. People with small outboards do idle out there as said before, at your own risk. This time of year not a big deal IMO.
So 3, possibly 4 boats. Not bad. JVM also wanted to fish Burke on saturday.

If this is going to be on the Potomac I would be interested as long as I can be off the water no later than 2:30. I have a dinner that I have to go to that night which starts at 5:00 and I will need to get dressed and put the boat at my storage location in Damascus. I have a 16'2" bass boat with 90hp Yamaha.

I would love to do burke lake but my boat is over 20 feet long and almost 2 thousand pounds. Hand winching it all the way in isnt even an option. I need to use the motor to get it up far enough on the trailer when I load it up. I just saw a 12 foot jon boat on craigslist with a trolling motor for 2 hundred bux!! You guys should hop on one of these winter boat deals. Im even tempted to buy one with the prices Im seeing right now.
This is right by my house if anyone wants me to go see it for them. Impossible deal to beat for $200. You just need a trailer or huge truck to move it around.

hey guys new to the forum! seems like the lower potomac is doing well this time of year. i fish the upper potomac regularly, and mattawoman maybe twice a year. i read this thread in its entirety and find it very very interesting, and am going to make it a point for me to drive down somewhere around pohick bay or 4 mile run or one of these places you guys are talking about (if you guys don't mind that is!) and try to catch some largemouth and stripers hopefully! i just have to do some research of an area to go to, maybe around a boat ramp or something, where some decent shore fishing might be. awesome thread!
I didn't bother to read through the whole thread, whats the general consensus looking like? Haven't been on the boards much lately, been swamped with work this semester. But I'll be coming home (F'burg) this Friday so plan on fishing Sat, Sun and Mon depending on how the bite is. Not to sound like a dick but if you all aren't fishing the Potomac count me out. I'm sold on the Potomac, love fishing there. I've got a boat but I would probably have a partner already although not for sure.
I wouldnt mind participating in the fish off the only problem is i dont have a boat. If anyone had any extra space and wouldnt mind one more then i would like to do it.
What i am starting to realize here is that the winter time proves to be a hard to time to finalize a place to have a tournament. I am wondering if people will hold strong for Saturday. As of now it sounds like there might be three boats and that may be less by now.
Im also thinking that whoever does go fishing on Saturday either at Burke or anywhere else should post their two biggest bass on the website and we'll see who's the weekend champ. Not sure how to stop the cheatin though...
However, i am still down if people are feeling that itch on Burke. I wish it was easier to do a headcount on this sight. Haven't quite outsmarted myself as to how to do one yet.
I'm in. 100%. Burke is fine.
Quanjig is fishing there as well, I believe.

I've got to back out. I got invited to do some striper fishing out in the bay on Saturday. Couldn't turn down what is essentially a free guided trip. From what I hear its been pretty hot lately with numerous ~50 lbers. I'm stoked. Shimmy, I'll post up my two biggest fish, what's the winner get?
Oh yea, I'm in. I will have maps for whoever shows up.
ok, so:

post again if you are still able to go on saturday. I guess people want to fish Burke, and I'm assuming the AM works for everyone?
Yes, me + boat.
I'm sick again, infact I have never really been right since I got sick in August so I probably wont be fishing until I feel better , so who knows. If I do feel better by then I'll fish the potomac and post pics on the scale of my 2 biggest fish if I even catch 2. I think it should just be a lunker challenge. Biggest fish wins, simple as that.
I am available to fish burke on saturday if there is an open spot if not thats fine to i will shore fish in richmond
If we are concerned about people with small boats then why not launch out of Occoquan? Burke lake is an OK fishery but there will be a lot of frustrated people at the end of the day. If we launch out of the Occoquan River everyone will catch fish. The ramp in the back of Occoquan is nice and there is plenty of room for a weigh-in. There is a 1.5 mile no-wake zone where the smaller boats can fish with no problems, that same zone is a great cold water fishery. Guys with bigger boats can head out and fish the whole Potomac river if they like.
If it is anywhere on the river I am down and will bring my boat with room for a co-angler, but I am not wasting an awesome late fall day on Burke Lake.

Rockville, I'm assuming you mean the Occoquan River at the Regional Park? That is a good idea.
he is talking about launching at Occoquan park (not fountain head). That seems like a decent idea. For that matter pohick bay is very accessible for small boats too. I'm not comfortable launching my boat at burke. What time is this taking place? What are the rules? Depending on location I have room for a co-angler.
I can fish this Sat but only until noon... no boat.
I can possibly get a jon boat for a sunday tourney but not this sat.
Also, we could still do Anna and rent a boat or two. It'd be more expensive but I am down to split the cost of a $100+-/day bass boat with someone.
I have to work this sat so can fish till about noon.
If we do this we can figure the rules once we have a day time and participation figured, thats the important stuff.
Anyways, I am def in however we figure to do it. Scrapping this tourney isnt really an option the way I see it so if u dont like the idea, you can post ur comments on another thread
Lets make it happen. I'll be in Tx in a nmonth or so and this is my last chance at catching a state record bass in VA with a BIG bait!!!!
ok, so how does the Occoquan River below the dam sound? They have a great launch and PLENTY of room. It's called Occoquan Regional Park. It's easy to find on Google Maps.
Quanjig, does that work for you?
The gate opens at 8am. I say we aim to meet then.
time to charge the batteries!
Ok, so if we are cool with the Occoquan at 8am on Saturday, here is the updated list:

This is gonna be great! Occoquan Regional is a great launch site. If we only have two boats then we might need to go three-to-a-boat. Any other boaters interested?
I think launching at 8:00 is a great idea, what time do we want to do the weigh-in? Should this be a paper tournament or should we weigh our fish? 5-fish limit or biggest fish? If we do an actual weigh-in someone is going to need to bring a weigh bag, I have a digital scale.
How long is this gonna be ? 8am till ? And how many fish?
How 8am-2pm? Is 6 hours enough? Too much?
Should we do a team tournament with 2 or 3 person teams or should we just do individual limits?
I say we do 5 fish limits unless we do teams, then we have a 6 fish limit. I vote for overall weight wins with respect for big fish.
I'm in the process of updating my live well system (what a pain). I don't think I'll be done by Saturday. Are we doing an actual weigh-in? I guess I may be able to bring a livewell (cooler) from my buddies jon boat. I'm waiting to hear back from a friend about fishing as a co-angler. If he can not make it I have room for 1 or 2 if need be. I can let you know this afternoon.
If we don't have livewells we can just measure on scales and record it on paper. It doesn't have to be too serious. I'm not worried about people cheating. Plus, there will be other people on the boat to confirm.
Aaron, if you have an open seat, can I ride along with you?
Rockville, if you've got a spot can I hop on your boat? I'm pretty new to fishing, so if you're looking for a win, look elsewhere- just being honest. Haha.
I will also help with gas and anything else.
Since there is no money on the line we can do this rather informally. Each fish has to be caught and weighed and photographed before being released. Biggest 5 fish per boat (team tournament). Pictures must show the scale weight (and please be sure to zero your scales before weighing the fish). We can post all the pictures on this thread after the tournament but at the ramp we can go over our weights and determine the winner.
New Angler welcome aboard! My boat is not huge so try to keep it to six rods or less. Lets kick some butt! PM me for more info on what to throw.
If i cant get the live well up and running I say we do pictures and weight on paper.
Dan, I'll let you know as soon as I hear this afternoon. If we are doing 3 man teams then count yourself in no matter what! This could be a deadly team...let the talking begin
I was looking forward to catching fish at Burke on the brush piles, but the Occoquan sounds like a good alternative. This way we should be able to get some of the guys with bigger boats in the mix and I can feel safe in my slipper of a Jon boat. Not sure how shimmy is gonna feel in a raft tho!! Shimmy can ride with me if he likes. But , yea, that works for me. Could we go until 3 maybe?? Hate to only fish for short time on a late fall beauty like they say it might be! I will still have theBurke maps for those still interested, someones gotta believe me that place rocks hard this time of year!!!

No problem, not really compromising, just sounds like a nice way to get more people involved. just glad Rockville was thinking outside the "Burke Box!!" looks like we should have a good group of people ready for the challenge. I don't have much experience on that part of the river, but have heard of nice bags being caught down there. Like Rockville said it is supposed to be a great late fall /early winter haven for the bass'. Hope we don't have extreme tides tho, all in all, can't wait!
I'm pretty sure Rockville and I have it locked up. Not even a need for you guys to show up. Enjoy your tvs, fellas. 20+ lb bag from us!
I am def in but can only fish until noon this Sat so if there aren't enough boats which is liklely, I'll sit it out. :'(
I have not fished Occoquan in several weeks but I did fish it in early March with similar conditions and absolutely tore up the 12"-14" fish. Unfortunately I was in a tournament with a 15" minimum so it was all for not, but it was still a great time.
Sorry to have hijacked the meet-up quanjig. I have nothing against Burke and don't want everyone to cater to my preference but it seemed like more people had experience with the Potomac and Burke has a tough reputation (especially on this board). With this being one of the last weekends where fishing won't involve frozen fingers I was going to fish the River no matter what.
Occoquan has a lot of deep structure, drop offs, pilings, wood, docks, pads, dying grass etc. Even if there are no monsters brought in I think everyone will catch fish even if they just focus on the community holes. If you are having trouble finding fish and you see me on the water I will be happy to tell you what is working for us.
Believe me, not a problem one bit. Burke will kick out fish untill it freezes. Plenty time left to hook fish there. Nice to be able to place faces with all the names. Speaking of which, where is LHC? Is he planning on making an appearance? I thought this was originally planned to little vs. big bait with LHC being in the little bait camp?
Good to see the trash talkin begin! Now here is the only problem, a 5 fish limit i just don't think is realistic since half the boats won't have livewells. I'm thinkin we do this and meet at 8, split off and meet back at the ramp at 3. If you have the fish to weigh, great. If you have the picture with the fish on a scale, just as good. And Sunday, let the posting begin!
Hey quanjig, we can double up if you want. I have to warn you i have never fished the river and if your lookin for a hot spot, i have no idea. However, i have a feeling that we could still put a pretty good fight in.
MAN AWARDS
1. Biggest fish
2. Heaviest 2 fish or 5 fish limit
Dan, good job for gettin the names goin.
Depending on how Steve (420Angler) feels we will also be out there but we wont be partaking in the tourney, we will be tearing it up elsewheres 8-)
Sound good. My boat has a livewell. We should be able to figure something out, limited knowledge or not we'll smoke 'um!!

So far we have 3 boats and 9 or 10 people. Looks like we're going to have to do 3 to a boat. Is everyone's boat capable of holding 3 people? If not, not everyone is going to be able to go.
what ramp our we planning on meeting at? I googled regional park, and couldn't find the ramp. I did notice there was a fountainhead regional park launch ramp.
Advantage here is it looks like they rent out boats here as well.
Dan,
my little jon boat will only fish 2 people. wish I could get 3 in but it's tippy as is with 2. Shimmy, look for Occoquan regional park. Fountainhead is still open but is not renting jon boats. You can still rent kayaks. the res is my home water so to speak and I know the rangers well. Smokey told me last week about the no more jon boat rentals. Occoquan Regional Park 9751 Ox Rd. QuoteQuoteI am fine with a third if they are OK with the cramped conditions. On a small boat a third would need to pack lightly in terms of tackle. You dont know what cramped is until you fish 3 on a 12" John boat.....tell em Dan...
I used to have a Sea Eagle SE9 inflatable boat with a 50lb trolling motor and I once took three people out.... needless to say it was not fun. That boat was only 9 feet long!
Whoever PMs me first can have the third spot. The third person will have to split the $8 launch fee with NewAngler.
Any other boaters want to come out and fish??? I know guys like Eli and Thai will be fishing and I can't think of a better place to fish this time of year than the Occoquan! (OK maybe Blue Plains but it will be packed!)
We have a high tide at 9:52 and a low tide at 3:55 at high point in Occoquan. This means that the bite will be ON in the first hour and a half of the tournament and will be solid right before a 3:00PM weigh-in (assuming we weigh in at 3:00PM). Should be a really solid day if the weather cooperates.

Thanks man, I was just about to check that.
Hey quanjig, i'm gettin the feeling that most people here know this reservoir pretty well. I have that strange feeling that at the sound of the buzzer, everyone will jet off to their majic hotspot while you and i paddle along the shore line searching for something...
Since we only have a John boat it only seems fair that we get to weigh in 8 fish. I am sure that everyone will be ok with that.
With that said, i have this sixth sense feeling that we will be rippin a lot of lips on saturday, and whats this...Quanjig and Shimmy in the 5 foot boat paddle towards the weigh in, all four arms are needed to lift the bulging bag of fish, they are then placed on the scale, a new record is set, everyone cheers and then takes shimmy and quanjig to lunch.
It's not a reservoir, it's the river below the reservoir between the dam and the P'mac. It is tidal. Neither soccplayer nor Matt have fished this area, and I have only fished it once for crappie (although we may head out in the river to other spots). I have no idea if RockvilleMDAngler has fished this area but I don't think NewAngler has fished it. So most of us know little to nothing about this area, I think quanjig probably has the most experience there.
Also, quanjig, since I know you fish the tournaments at Fountainhead, I'm assuming your boat has a 9.9hp outboard? I'm just assuming, but Shimmy, I don't think you're going to have to worry about paddling.
just to clarify, Im feelin good and am on antibiotics however myself and Thai will be fishing pretty far from you guys around DC. And I dont wanna have to spend 40 bux in gas just to come 15 miles down river and show off our 5 pounders. I'm sure you guys will have a blast. Theres alot of wood on the oqc. river and Im willing to bet it will have alot of boats on it too. Im just kinda tired of fishing that part of the river lately and prefer to go after the bigger fish up north. You guys should catch a decent amount of 2-3 pounders tho if you know what youre doing. The baby buzzbait(eighth ounce) early in the mornin in that calm no wake zone water might work well btw. Also dont forget about the rock jetties by leesylvania for those of you in small boats. You can throw crankbaits and do well there. Theres no big waves there to worry about. If something changes then we'll show up but dont count on us being there.

Thats why we have cameras man!
Yeah I dont think most of those guys fish the river much.
It isnt but 3-3 1/2 miles the stretch and I think ya'll keep it on the river and don't go out past the mouth to Belmont Bay, I think that will keep it fair given boat/motor size disadvantages.
I guess you could take it as far as Occ bay where it meets potomac, leesylvania etc but then big boats would have a huge disadvant. keep it to the river n no wakes, etc.
No worries about paddling shimmy. I have the typical res setup. 9.9(slightly modified), OMC 12/24 56lb thrust TM, livewell, hummingbird matrix.. We will be plentygood. A large satchel of fish is a given!
QuoteI have the typical res setup. 9.9(slightly modified)
meaning a 15hp with 9.9 decals mwahaha
do we have a final count of who is attending?
You guys are doomed.
I now have New Angler and CMatthews in my boat so I am full.
I have fished the Occoquan River several times but this is not the type of area with a lot of secret spots. Bridge Pilings, docks, old wooden pilings, pads, and rip rap are all visible and hold fish. If you have a depthfinder then you will definitely see the drop offs that are everywhere. As you make your way out to Belmont Bay be sure you stay within the channel markers or you might find yourself stuck at low tide. I am going out to have fun and show some people what a world-class fishery the Potomac is, winning is definitely a second priority for me (especially since there is no money on the line :-) ); so if anyone is struggling feel free to ask me and I will show you where and how we have caught our fish.
Even slightly more modified!! I like to think big!!
I was going to say that but I thought that info may be classified...
Nothing on that motor says it's anything other than a 9.9. It's 100% legit
You got a 250 on your jon boat?
QuoteYou got a 250 on your jon boat?
Haha, quanjig runs about 150 in it. Sounds like you all are gonna have a fun time and a great day weatherwise. Wish I could make it but its tough turning down the opportunity to possibly catch a 50 lb striper. Good luck and let us know how it goes
By jon boat res standards.....yes........yes I do!!!
"modified" lol!
nothing wrong with keepin it secret. I use to tell people my supra was stock, then they heard the loud cams and huge turbo spool up, was kinda a dead give away at that point. Boat is the same deal, you can say what u want but once a game warden hears it then your busted :-? From what I understand they can hear the difference in a 15 and a 9.9 especially when your doing 25 mph on the water.
it's all good. jonny lifeguard can look and listen all he wants! I'm not the first to do it and I'm sure I won't be the last. been running modified 9.9 for 5 years and never had an issue. if you go about your business in a respectful manner, you will never have an issue. the g+f guys on the res are looking for no liscense or people being stupid, I got mine and my mama didn't raise me to be stupid.
final head count? rules? 8-3pm?
I vote for 6 fish bags. It appears as though we all have live wells so we can weigh-in at marina. Did some mention they have a scale?
I'm stoked. Can't wait to put faces with names. See everyone tomorrow.

Theres only one problem with that, its illegal to hold tournaments without the proper permits, even a little one like this might draw negative attention, I would advise against all of you weighing in at the marina, weigh your own fish in your boats and keep track would be the best way, best would be to take the picture and just be honest, less stress than being in a livewell for up to 7 hours....
Theres nothing on the line here so why risk killing the fish?
appreciate the opinion. with proper live well management there is no reason to fear fish loss. I think we can easily be discrete with a weigh in. I also do not think the marina will be that busy this time of year. Good luck up north tomorrow.
Not really a tournament ( no monies involved ) Not sure that we need any permits if all we are fishing for are bragging rights. I was involved with the organization of the tournaments at Fountainhead, and the only reason we needed the insurance and ok from the park authority is that it was an organized event on park property. this is more like, show up if you can, catch a big one , let's see what you got!! your concern is appreciated, I think we will be ok. sure you guys don't wanna get in on this or are you dead set to fish up north??
We're pretty dead set on fishing up north for larger fish, but good luck to you guys out there and as always be safe out there, esp those in smaller vessels unfamiliar with the waters
you guys as well and we need pictures from you two as well
UPDATE:
Boat 1: Soccerplayer07, Matt, Dan
Boat 2: quanjig, Shimmy
Boat 3: RockvilleMDAngler, NewAngler, cmatthews6485
We'll launch from the Occoquan Regional Park at 8am and fish until 3pm. 3pm we will meet back at the ramp for weigh in. We'll weigh 6 fish bags and the heaviest bag wins. I've got a scale that I will bring but anyone else is welcome to bring theirs as well, it would be good to have another one for verification and as a backup.
How's that sound to everyone?
sounds good. i have a scale too.
Good luck all. I'm rootin for the underdogs rollin Jon boat.
Are ya'll still fishing BIG vs. little?
What is the boundaries? Leesylv/Potomac, Belmont?
no boundaries! "under dog", he (quanjig) is the best fisherman i know!!!
Well Shim is new to area, they r rollin Jon, and two/team versus three... D@mn!t thats who im rootin for got it Socc!!!
thanks for the compliment Aaron. Matt is quite the stick as well. just the product of too much time and mispent, often, money I don't have!!!
I've been reading this thread w/ some jealousy: can't make it this weekend. As of last weekend, there were plenty of fish to be had in the general area you are fishing. Some guys reported catching up to 35 in a 9 hour tx ( I can't say what percentage of these were keepers), and I'm reasonably sure they did not leave the no wake zone.
Just keep in mind that if you enter that no wake zone from the Potomac at 2:55 and weigh in is at 3:00, you'll never make it to the ramp on time. It takes a good 15-20 min (that is, if you do intend to leave no wake).
In. Just prepared my gear.
You guys better start fighting for silver, the gold already has a home.
Oh, and socc, I'll let you peek into the winning bag. Maybe.
Is it right on 123? Just before orjust after the bridge depending on the direction you're heading?

Pretty confident for someone who doesnt know how to get there lol!
lmao!
NewAngler, you will see a big sign for the park right there off of 123. When you turn in, you have to drive back through the park for a while to get to the boat ramp.
well said Thai!!! No way we're loosing with our roster!
that is very funny...... "we're gonna win.....uh.....where is it........uh........right.....ummmmmm.........errrrr......left..........."
Should have made two different posts, ey?
Regardless, VICTORY.
With the big fish on our boat.
Wheres smack talkin', hawg hoistin', Shimmy?
shimmy is the least of your worries...
Quoteshimmy is the least of your worries...
i don't know Aaron he could swipe your drain plugs!
JK Shimmy
I already have his drain plugs. That eliminates one team... just gotta worry about Team Jon Boat
oh this is gonna be fun...
I will have the last post for the night. The Lion does not need his sleep. Sleep away little kittens, sleep. This paddle boat will be ready to go.
Game time.
And the fishing is Onnnnnnn! Decent weather, hope ya'll are slayin em!
Well... the talking shouldn't have started from me. We decided on a 6 fish bag, 12 inch or larger.
Dan, Matt and Aaron (soccplayer) took the Gold with a total weight of 6 fish weighing 9 lbs 12 oz (i think) with the net
Jonh (quanjig) and Troy (Shimmy) came in second with 5 boated fish and 7 lbs even
Myself, Mark (RockvilleAngler) and Chris (cmatthews) came in third place with 2 boated fish and a weight of 3 lbs and some change..
All in all it was a good time, nice to put a face to the names.. OH! and our boats biggest fish was caught on a 3 in. senko!
Us fools got a total of ZERO pictures.
Good to hear you guys all got some fish. Even better to hear the 3inch senko pulled in your big fish. I was stuck doing yard work all day, but did stumble across another pack of 3inch senkos, so ill prob be down at riverside tomorrow.
we just did alright out there today. After an eventful launch which entailed me forgettin to put the drain plug in and realizing it once the boat was all the way in the water, we then set out for the spoils. Thai caught two 1 and a half pounders there within about 30 minutes. I once again managed to lose a 10 dollar spinner bait that snapped off when I cast. P line sucks. Then we moved on to blue plains but stayed for maybe 5 minutes, then off to mt vernon where Thai caught two more and I caught my only fish which was 1.8 pounds. He was a bit long and skinny or else he might have been a lil closer to 3, oh well. Was a rough stressful day out there, very windy. I made the mistake of gettin behind a yacht which threw me some 5 foot waves. We were airborne for a few seconds lol. First time I ever gotten wet in my stratos. The river kicked my a$$ today. At least I got the boat home safe and sound. And on top of that someone bought the silver daiwa pixy I was gonna buy on here, Im not happy. Such is life.
sorry to rockville and newangler today was my first skunk of the year we just couldnt find the fish today even if i boated a keeper we still would have lost. next time i will be more prepared and will make sure that my team doesnt loose. I tried spinnerbaits crankbaits jigs senkos lizards space monkey rage tail andaconda paca craw and swimming senko i missed the only good bite i had and it was probally only about 12 inches anyways wouldnt of helped us much.
It was fun watching rockville(mark) fight that atleast 40 pound catfish for 5-10 minutes on 6lb line test and bring him all the way to the boat just to watch it snap, didnt have a big enough net to land him
I was going to write up a report but I think NewAngler's will suffice. I will add that most of our fish were caught on soft plastic swimbaits over in Mattawoman creek. Over in Occoquan was tough, I don't know what would have happened if we had stayed over there....
Nice to meet you all. We should definitely do something like this again.
Shimmy, sorry, I should have clarified about Google Map's bad directions. I thought about that last night but forgot to make a post. I don't know why they think that road exists, but it sure doesn't!
And for the record, I believe all but one of the largest fish were caught on large baits.

Chris, where do you usually fish down in your neck of the woods? Is it similar to the Potomac?
That was a tough day. It was very nice to meet all of you and have a laugh at our great acomplishments of absolutly whacking the dog snot out of those beautyful 12 inch whoppers!! Kinda glad we did'nt have the camera ready. :
Im used to shore fishing lakes sometimes rivers but if im river fishing im wading. I have been on a boat three times this year and did great but one was a resovoir and the other was a river. I fish innsbrook swift creek resovoir, pochoantas state park, james river, ed allens(chicohomany lake) and other small but good lakes around richmond that are in woods and hardly fished. Usually i catch atleast 5 in 3 hours of fishing.
I had a lot of fun today. tough conditions but at least every team got on fish.
When is round two???
I am ready for round two whenever every one else is. I know i can figure that place out next time. If i didnt think i could do good i wouldnt drive an hour and a half to fish it lol but i think i can do better next time
you'll crush em next time. today was just a tough one.
Chris, that place is tough to wrangle at times and we just happened to pick a toughy!! I'm telling you guys to try Burke. It only gets better for the next few weeks. The Occoquan will turn out some good fish now and again, but it sure can be a stinker as well. I bet we could get into some stripers tho
d**n, no1 brought a camera with them today??
i was hopin to at least see some pix of the action
I couldnt find my lucky BPS hat either this morning i was mad. And im going to pick up some swimbaits this week and try them around my local lakes and get a feel for them. What color jigs were you having best luck on i tried a black and blue strike king with a yum craw trailer and a pb&j booyah with a yum chunck trailer. got a few hits but were all short hits. Had the most hits on a rage tail lizard in watermelon red with a 3/8 oz bullet wait. Most of the water we fished was deeper so the wind was messing up my senko retrieve. No luck at all on spinner bait and crank bait i tried a rapala rattle trap no luck on that either but i didnt try it much it was the first time i used it i should of tried it more. I wanted to try the zoom super fluke in baby bass but i didnt know if it would be ok with all the wind.
not a 3/8oz bullet wait but a 3/16oz bullet wait
Steve has pictures of our fish
Man today was nasty, but i think at the end of the tournament everyone realized that they each sucked it up today. There is really no room for excuses. Team Soccplayer07 did indeed take the gold. It should be noted, that not only did they get one more fish than me and quan, every little bass they had was a few ounces bigger than ours. Tough day, but fun and nice to meet people.
I have a feeling that this is a good group of guys and will be a great learning forum for sharing the hot spots (don't worry, i'll contribute once i get out a little more).
Not one fish was over 2 pounds for anyone today. One kicker fish could have won it for any team. I hurt quan today by sticking with big baits for too long. It was a gamble that did not pay off. Because of this, quan contributed 3 to the livewell and i only put 2 in their. Looks like Burke is next fellas.
shimmy, for not being familar with the location, you did very well sticking to your guns and staying "big". I'm just happy we caught what we did. considering the conditions, it was a fair result for the Occoquan river. Aaron Matt and Dan cheated and went to Mattowoman!!!! jk
the river was fair game. i know other portions better than the occ so we left. your day is coming when you show us up at Burke!!!
Chris, stop beating yourself up man. We had a good time.
MVP goes to Troy's wife for finally getting him there. If you were just 3 minutes later John and I would have been a pair. And a force to reckon with.
Next time we should hit up the bar riht down the street for a celebration.
Shimmy, what were you throwing as your big bait?
you know I'm just pokin' fun. believe me, I would have been out of the Occoquan in a heartbeat if i had a bigger boat!!!
I'm heading to Burke Wednesday. anybody interested???
If you have room and want a co-angler i wouldnt mind going but if you find other people thats understandable
I'm free as well.
what games do you play on XBL dan
I would like to fish Burke if Matt doesn't come
What do you have against matt?
Jealous of his angling skills?

Modern Warfare 2, of course!
Do you play halo 3 any?
I used to but I don't even own it anymore.
QuoteWhat do you have against matt?Jealous of his angling skills?
I'm sorry who caught 4 fish and who caught none today? It has to be jealousy... ;D
Sorry Matt for the humor at your expense bro lol
wait, who are we talking about?
Cmatthew, dude who went out with Marc and Josh
oh, his name is Chris.
just curious if any of you caught one bigger then my biggest ? Mine was 1.8 which is pitiful but fishin the main river was hard work yesterday. Here is thai's biggest fish and my only fish. His was 1.6, I never thought the day would come where I would be showing off pics of sub 2 pound bass :-/
Awwww..Cute!
To answer your question, Steve...Aaron, Matt, and I each had a fish that were close to those fish but we didn't weigh them individually. I think they were around the 2lb range.
I have to believe that a fish is a fish is a fish, but I don't think anything we caught yesterday was really picture worthy.
Agreed, but I still wish we had pictures of the three boats fishing or people at the weigh-in to post in the thread.
Yes, a group photo suitable for Christmas cards would have been nice!!! Common Dan, as group historian you should have been all over that!!
Well you all didn't slay em but sounds like it was a fun time. By this point in the season I'm happy even being able to get out, catching fish is an added bonus. We will have to organize one in the early spring sometime. Or on Lake Anna hotside as 420 mentioned. Thatd be sick. I'll be home for Christmas break mid Dec to mid Jan so maybe something then. We had a so-so day on the Bay yesterday. Slower than I thought but it was good to be on the water and we had a nice day for it as well. Ended up with 7, one short of our limit. Here's the two biggest of the day, maybe a bit over 2 lbs ;D
Hey, to thwe guys that were there;
Did you guys see a wallet? I canot find it for the life of me. I know I got it off marks boat, but cannot find it.
that is sick vabasser! well done man. we still need to trade spots on the river...
Josh, I didn't see a wallet. Have you called the park offices? Someone might have turned it in.
QuoteYes, a group photo suitable for Christmas cards would have been nice!!! Common Dan, as group historian you should have been all over that!!
ahahaha, I'll be sure to bring my camera, tripod, and backdrop next time!
I have lost a few things when out on the water. Hopefully the wallet turns up. Hope u didnt have too much cash in there.
sweet, then we can start calling you " DANsal Adams"
Damnit.
Thanks, Dan. I called with no luck. I stopped by my office after fishing, it could be there. No idea. This sucks.
And steve, I didn't have much cash, maybe $10. Am I missing out on the avatar name thing? Do I need to change it to my first name to with the "in" croud?

Rather than give an extensive reason behind why it's the in thing to have your displayed name your actual name I'll just leave it at
YES
Even better when your the only one on here instead of having to use hyphens, underscore, periods, comma, etc...
signed, the on and only "Thai" on BR!
ya know I thought for a moment of changin my display name to Potomac Angler just to mess with everyone but then thought better of it. Could have made for some fun/confusion. I'll stick with being one of many steve's on here. I tried a few and had to settle for the gayish underscores. And when Im ready I'll find something else more interesting to call myself.
Hey Josh sorry to hear about your wallett! My boat is in storage in Damascus but I will be using her again on Friday and I will see if you might have left it onboard, I will also check my car as it may have fallen out when you drove the trailer out of the water.
Saturday was a great time and it would have been a lot better if the fish cooperated. I had a monster blue catfish kick my butt for 5-10 minutes only to finally break my 6lb line at the boat, that dropshot rod broke a few casts later while trying to free a snag and I think it was a result of the 40lb catfish wearing it out. We had several short fish and lost a lot more. I was surprised at the amount of grass that is still looking good in Occoquan, if I were to go fish a tournament there today I would focus on that grass with soft plastics.
To Chris and Josh I apologize for not getting us on fish. We focused too long on docks and didn't hit up some of my other spots out closer to the mouth. The spots we fished were better spots in the winter and early spring, I should have realized that the water was not quite cold enough to push those fish on bridge pilings. Well there is always next time!
When is the Potomac Fish Off v2.0?
Quotethat is sick vabasser! well done man. we still need to trade spots on the river...
Dude I know, we need to try and get out this upcoming season. I've been doing some thinking about the spawn/spring on the Potomac. Alot of the spots I started fishing mid-summer seem like they'd be great spots when the big girls are up shallow so I'm pretty stoked to see if thats true. Are you going to do any fishing over winter?
i try to get out at least once a week. let me know if your ever down.
found my wallet.
lol where was it
in my office.
