Ok guy's and gals,
It's time to start thinking about the next meet and greet, we had a blast with this one but we look forward to the next one, so with that being said we would like to suggest something for next year.
We are thinking of doing four, one for each area of the state, North, South, East and West, and have one big one for the end of the year somewhere.
What suggestions do you all have to offer and what time of year offers the best fishing for your body of water?
My thoughts are, I would love to visit the Chick River sometime in this adventure next year, thats a must for me !!!!!, get together or not, the Potomac is certainly not out of the question either, Smith Mountain Lake, Buggs Island, Claytor Lake, Moomaw, Bryery Creek, just to name a few, I know there are more out there so lets hear what you have to say so we can start laying some plans out for spring.
Remember we want your families to enjoy this as well so get them involved !!!!
We look forward to hearing all of the suggestions so lets get going !!!!
Edit : As stated we are thinking of doing 4 of these, however, right now, it is only a thought, I personally will only be able to attend one, hopefully we can make it a big one, the more info and suggestions we get the better the spot will be for the next one.
I could be talked into Briery/Sandy River or the Potomac.
Off to a good start !!!
Will you be bringing your family?
Are you a boater or non boater?
What time of year is the best fishing for each place you mentioned?
I think the Potomac is good pretty much all year is it not ? I have never fished it before from a boat, so I have no clue.
My only request is that you keep your meet and greets away from our Road Trip, so that everyone who attends your meet and greets have the opportunity to attend the Granddaddy of them all! Pickwick 2013! No Excuses!
http://www.bassresou...-youre-invited/
Jeff
We would not dare do such a thing !!!! why in the world would you think we would?
I myself would love the opportunity to go to the Granpappy event for sure !!!!
But 14 hrs and hundreds of dollars in fuel alone just are not in the cards big guy, maybe someday for sure, unless I hit the lotto before then, HEY !!! How bout Va. for 2014?
Get together with Traveler on his way down. Or Fishing Rhino. They come from north of you and would love to split gas!!!
Jeff
LOL !!!
Traveler offered me that same exact thing ... twice !!!
My family loves to fish and camp together as a unit, so if I came it would be with them, but 00 I promise if I could I would.
I don't think you guy's and gal's want someone like me around anyway, I have a feeling if Long Mike or Ghoti and I got to meet each other someone would have to come bail us out of the local pokie there LOL !!!
I don't think any of our wives would appreciate that...I know for a fact mine wouldn't Ha Ha !!...I wonder if they serve breakfast in bed?
Well start saving your pennies! If you can't make 2013, make plans for 2014. You never know where it might be!
Jeff
I will do my best !!
I look forward to meeting all you guys someday.
00 brought up a good point.
The best way to avoid conflict with the Road trip is I think to keep ours either in the fall or late summer.
So where would we go from there?
We would like an area where we can fish from shore and take boats out as well, I myself have not fished Briery, or Sandy river, but the way I understand it Briery is not a place for glass boats, my daughter does own a V hull 14' port a jon, but it only seats three, that would put one member of my family out, it would be nice if we could figure out a place that will allow both glass and bank fishing.
I'm a boater. All the places mentioned are good Spring to Fall, IMO.
I cannot remember a trip to Briery that I did not see at least one glass boat. One trip last spring there were more glass than tin boats. There is bank fishing @ Briery; a fishing pier at the ramp nearest the dam, and more limited bank opportunities @ the other ramp.

Interesting, do they have a picnic area there too?
I know Wayne P. last year when they had a meet and greet, told me they have campgrounds close by as well.

its always the same few lakes....yall should branch out more....
There are lost of good places... Briery, SML, Leesville, etc. Another good place but small is Monacan Park. It is the James river but is dammed up so it forms a small lake. We can look at Claytor, Moomaw... whatever. Eventually we would cover them all. lol

Been drinkin?
I know that Claytor has a BEAUTIFUL picnic area and a ton of areas to fish from shore, Moomaw is limited shore fishing but still ample, the James, I do not know how much room to fish from shore there is, I have never been there either.

Glenn makes the ultimate decision. It is based on where the most concentration of members live. You have to think....he is from Washington State. He travels the furthest.

I wish. Typing at work at that time and trying not to get caught.
I would have to agre with you. As for the James... there is a nice picnic area at Monacan Park and I see people fishing there all the time. Also... it is small enough that I can bring my jonboat with a small motor and let some of the non-boaters use it. I see many canoe and kayak fishers there as well.On 9/28/2012 at 3:11 AM, Nitrofreak said:I know that Claytor has a BEAUTIFUL picnic area and a ton of areas to fish from shore, Moomaw is limited shore fishing but still ample, the James, I do not know how much room to fish from shore there is, I have never been there either.
How in the world did I miss that post?
I always thought the big un's were centerally located, or mostly centerally located, in the states to try to have everyone have to travel the same amount of distance or somewhat close to it.
I knew Glenn lived in Washington and a cross country trip was really too much to ask, shucks a trip to Pickwick is almost that in itself.
As much as I would love to see you all come to Va. my personal opinion would be that I think it to be unfair of him to have to do so.
There is not a thing wrong with where you all have chosen each year, I just wish the economy was better so I could make plans to attend.
Glenn, Long Mike, and others who help put these things together, I know how big of an undertaking these things are and your efforts should be applauded !

So are we changing the meet and greet to fishing from shore this coming year?
Actually that may not be a bad idea at all, it would allow everyone to meet and talk as long as they want with each other, a lot more time for family to get involved and interact as well if they so desired.
What does everyone think of something like that?
I'm open for anything, but my take on the 2012 Va M&G is it was too short, I didn't have time to meet everyone and really chat or fish, Nitrofreak was the exception. But from what I did do, we had a really great bunch of guys & gals there, and I'd like to see them all again.
As for fishing the Potomac, I'll offer to do any leg work necessary to make it a reality. Smallwood State Park has camping and cabins; and one of the best boat launches on the river, and is central to the middle Potomac and in easy reach of D.C. for glass boats. With that being said, Mattawoman and Smallwood also have a high activity level for locals and tournaments. Smallwood State Park is on the Mattawoman Creek, which is one of the best fisheries of the river and great for kyackers and small boats as well as larger boats. You can go up river or down and find fish.
Will give the locations some thought.
The major bodies of water do not lend themselves to bank fishing.
Anyone know of a large body of water with a well stocked pond nearby? We could fish the pond and take the nonboaters on the large body of water for two hours and then return to the dock to pick up another person who was fishing the pond.
That's a great looking place, Eric. Would love to do that.
NF... I am not suggesting we move to bank fishing but if there is good bank fishing, it would give people something to do while waiting for a boat to open up.
On 9/28/2012 at 9:01 AM, Zoff said:That's a great looking place, Eric. Would love to do that.
Yes, but other than Pier fishing at the marina the Mattawoman does not lend itself to convenient bank fishing at all, it's great for the yaks though.

We need to work on getting more boaters of all types, they just need to be two seats or more; gas or electric. I loved pond fishing out of a Jon boat, but let B.A.S.S. pull me to the dark side of glass boats. any size pond or small lake would work for me
Ask Road Warrior about bank fishing at Guntherville during the 2012 Road Trip. He won largest fish of the week.

I know what you used to do for a living, and who you worked for, I have no doubt "you know people" LOL !!
Mattawomen huh? I have heard lots of good things about fishing there, I like the idea of the state park too, couple of questions though, is that tidal water? and what hazzards do we need to consider?
I think with Traveler's knowlage of the place we should add Smallwood/Mattawoman to the list.
Now speaking of yaks, is there a rental place nearby for safe small boats? like a john boat, yaks may not be for everyone, but in case we get a huge turn out, im thinking some of these boys and girls may want to have that option.
Yes jon boat would be nice. I have 14' topper with a 7.5 hp motor. On 9/28/2012 at 6:23 PM, Nitrofreak said:I know what you used to do for a living, and who you worked for, I have no doubt "you know people" LOL !!

Well then, how many of you have a jon boat?
Traveler, is this place friendly enough that jon boats can be used or are the waters too rough?

Not for Jon or rowboats, but there is a place to rent yaks.A good portion of the creek/river is a 6 mph no wake zone. And there is a yak launcher at the Mattingly Ave ramp which is within the No Wake zone.I fished this creek for many years with only a 14' Jon with an electric troll and a 15 HP gas. A Jon or a yak can get back into the pads where a glass boats can't.On 9/28/2012 at 6:23 PM, Nitrofreak said:Now speaking of yaks, is there a rental place nearby for safe small boats? like a john boat, yaks may not be for everyone, but in case we get a huge turn out, I'm thinking some of these boys and girls may want to have that option.
CHICKAHOMINY? Campgrounds, two stocked ponds, boat rentals.

Hhhhhmmmmmmmmm, this is getting more interesting all the time, I am really liking what this place has to offer so far, and just a reminder, I don't know that you realised it but we were only in 2 1/2 feet at points, Ha Ha !! I kept sticking my rod in the water looking for depth changes and watching the mud roll out from under the boat, We had your glass pretty shallow back in Contrary Creek, are you sure glassers won't make it to where you are speaking of?
Speaking of which I STILL can't believe a big one or two didn't jump on your lure back there, we were there at the right time, I should have told you to switch to a top water but I thought that spinner you had would definately attract the right attention.
Oh well we will do it again sometime I hope.

The river or the lake ?
This is another place thats at the top of my list too !!!
How accessible are the ponds?
The lake. Ed allen campground. I've not been but I'd assume the access is easy, not sure on shatter whether or not you have to camp their to fish them.
I have never fished either, but this year I am going to, wether we have the meet and greet there or not, I would prefer the river but i have heard both are fun to fish !!

Don't know if you saw me slow rolling that spinner just under the surface like a buzzbait or not but I was creating a bubble trail that I thought should have landed something
BTW, I keep a push pole on board just for those areas, I thought I would need it when Steve, AJ & I were up at the end of a creek - we were really kicking up some mud with the TM.

On the Mattawoman from the Potomac to the start of the 6 mph zone can get choppy with Bass boats running back-and-forth during tournaments (look at the photo I posted), but I fished it for years out of a heavily loaded 14' Jon with me and a buddy - we had people stop by to ask if we were sinking :0 Ed & i got the plans for our Jon boat from Harry & Charley at B.A.S.S. (anyone know what I'm talking about there????)
Up in the 6 MPH zone it's glass smooth if there's no wind. They use to quarry sand and gravel up there so there are areas of holes and uneven S&G bottom back in the pads, some REALLY good spawning grounds. There's wood stick-ups, blow-downs, back-waters, etc. up there.
I think you, Zoff & Sam need to come up for a Little recon before you put the Mattawoman/Potomac on your list.
Can someone shoot me a PM and teach me how to do multi quotes in one post, there is something about that process that I can't wrap my mind around....

Ya, we have Snakeheads, but the rule is "you catch it - you keep it" there is no catch-and-release for Snakeheads.
If you like, you can come down any Friday night after work, fish Sat & Sun, and then go home Sunday evening so your ready for work or school on Monday;

There's always room for family
So, so far it's the Potomac and the Chick everyone is thinking, is that correct?
I know if we do something at Briery, I am still getting mixed thoughts about that one because of all the prickly things in the water there, could we have everyones thoughts on that too please?

Can we do a poll of water bodies and number of days some how?
Also, the 2013 Road Trip brought up an interesting point, State Parks may have cabins, they rent for a flat fee, and the more members to share a cabin the cheaper it is on each member. So if we picked locations with State Parks with cabins, we could do a weekend (Sat/Sun).
Some members could come for the whole weekend, some that could only come for one day (Sat. or Sun.) And campers can camp.
So the questions for a poll could be:
Would you be interested in the following waters, check all that apply:
Smith Mountain Lake
Leesville Lake, Virginia
Lake Anna
Chickahominy River @ Riverside Camp 2
Claytor Lake State Park
Little Creek Reservoir Park,Va
Staunton River State Park
Lake Chesdin, Va
Briery Creek Lake
Lake of the Woods
Deep Creek Lake, MD
Lake Moomaw
Belle Isle State Park, Rappahannock River
Hunting Run Reservoir (electric only)
Philpott Lake
Diascund Reservoir (electric only)
(etc)
How many days can you attend? 1 or 2
Would you like to share a cabin? Y/N
Would you like to camp Y/N
Would you be a boater Y/N
Would you be a co-angler Y/N
Would you bank fish only Y/N (note - some people may not like boating)
I just ran out of questions :] But you get the idea
How do you do a poll anyways?
Little Creek Reservoir Park,US
Absolutley Traveler we can do that for sure, I will get in touch with Zoff and gather all of the state parks info and move from there.

You have a State park close by that you would recomend for the Potomac?

Smallwood State Park, it has the Sweden Point Marina which is the best Middle Potomac launch site in MD, it's all just off the Potomac on the Mattawoman Creek.
http://www.dnr.state.md.us
http://www.dnr.state...n/smallwood.asp
I'm going to drive over there to check out the camp sites and cabins first hand and will let you know what I find.
Thanx buddy !!!
I will get to work on the rest of it as well.
Smith Mountain Lake has the same offerings as Anna did... cabins and camp sites. If you don't mind the 45 min drive to SML, camping can be had on our farm next to the pond and river that can be fished as well. I will do either. I can promise the same good time as Anna if you guys come down here. Can't promise fish but a good time is a guarantee. The way I look at it... we will eventually... over time... hit all the spots in the Old Dominion so I am good with where ever we choose. Given the choice... I would pick SML for the next one. lol
PARTY AT ZOFFS PLACE !!!!!
WWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOO HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!
You buying the beer too?....I will take two cases of Budweiser please.
What a great offer Zoff, thank you very much, now you say it's right on the river, how good is the river to fish and is there a boat launch near, is it good smallie fishing or is it pot luck where we can catch anything, what about glass boats vs jon boats is it safe for both?
Are you sure your wife will allow you to do this, cause I don't think you want to see the morning after LOL !!!
OK, I am finding a ton of camping everywhere I look for bodies of water in the old Dominion and we have got some really good feedback from Traveler for the Potomac.
What I would like to do is eliminate some of these areas for lack of interest.
Zoff, would it be ok with you if I create a post for bodies of water that has State parks, Camping, etc...and see what kind of interest we can attract?
It's gonna take a couple of days to get it all right.

Yeah... she's cool with it. This is a small family farm and I already got permission from my Dad for use of his part as well. The river is "no go" for glass. I use a jonboat. A friend of mine uses a 16 foot Lowe with a jet drive for his fishing. I figured we could catfish as well at the farm. If you have a small boat with motor, you can put in here and go up and down but must be able to carry it to the water. I pPut it at the ramp up river from me and take the 4 to 6 hour trip down just fishing for smallies. There are LM as well. State law say only one and must be over 20" if you want to keep them.On 10/10/2012 at 7:15 PM, Nitrofreak said:PARTY AT ZOFFS PLACE !!!!!

Are you sure your wife will allow you to do this, cause I don't think you want to see the morning after LOL !!!
hhhhhmmmmm sounds like a lot of fun too me !!!
I have yet to catch a smallie, don't really care for whisker fishing, the girls like it though, so they may enjoy it, I will just enjoy watching them with a few cold ones lol.

I love to sit and watch my wife and daughter fish when I am not on the front of the boat, the jon boat allows me to do that because I am in the back, usually I have a difficult time keeping up with the boat and fishing if it's breezy, so I get frustrated and watch the girls.
Whisker fishing Zoffs pond or fishing the river is something I would really enjoy watching them do, I would enjoy the company as well, maybe that's what we need to do, just sit back in the chairs and watch the girls have some fun.
Zoff, were you talking about whisker fishing your pond or the river?

Usually, when I'm kickin' back watchin' young Lady's have fun with a pole, it's not a fishin' pole. I would enjoy a relaxing day on a slow moving river, I'll see if I can get a friends canoe.

LMFAO !!!!!!!!!!!!
The pond has mostly Crappie, Bluegill, and Largemouth. There are a few smallies that were in the when we bought the place 20 some odd years ago but that is getting less and less every year. I haven't catfished the pond in years so, if there are any left, they would have some size on them. The "whisker" fishing would be from the bank on the river. Catch enough and have a catfish fry. We can take jonboats, canoes, kayaks, innertubes... that type of stuff... down the river for the smallies.
As for SML... yeah... it's about 45 or so minutes to the ramp I use regularly. Leesville Lake is about 10-15 minutes from me as well. We are getting to that time now where the fishing will be tops but a little cool in on the river bottom. Are we talking about doing this next year or soon?
Attached is a pic of the place to give you guys an idea...
Ed. Allen's on the Chick Lake has boats with 9.9's for rent.
We could work out a deal and have these small boats for use for the guys without boats.
Or we could fish a body of water that allows only trolling motors or 9.9's and us guys with the big motors can use our trolling motors to get around.
We need a place with nice accommodations like a state park or motels since some of us don't have campers and I quit camping after I got out of the Army.
Are there any nice reserviors in Charlottesville we can fish?
Any places where the guys can rent boats other than Chick Lake?
We had a great time this year and hopefully we can continue it next year.
Sam, the only places I have found so far that have boats to rent are on the Potomac, the Chick and on the Occoquan, I do not remember which one though, either fountainhead or Sandy run.
all of the camping areas have campsites and cabins at their state parks, at least the ones I have found for the bodies of water so far that are listed.
There would be an overwhelming pile of info to type down for all of the waters mentioned so far, that is the reason for getting it down to the top 5 and then I will get the info out there so we can all make an informed decision as to where we would like the next one to be.
As for areas around C-ville, yes there is one right behind the airport but the name gets away from me at this moment, not too sure what they have to offer either at this time, i have a couple friends that tell me it's a good place to fish.
We are happy to hear you had a great time Sam, that was the main goal, hopefully we can get more family envolvement and have some more fun as a complete family unit in the future.
To all: Please cast your vote, we have made the poll so that you can vote on a couple of different areas you would be willing to travel to.

Wow Zoff you have a good looking place there big guy!!!
Must have a heck of a mower too lol !!
Umm as far as soon I wouln't mind coming with the camper but we normally put it away after the holloween weekend, so I was thinking spring, but I guess we could do like a weekend thing for those who would be interested sometime soon if you would be interested.

Sam, the list of lakes/ponds I posted covers a wide variety of water so there would be something for everyone. Like NF said we need to pick a top five to start with; but we could also use the list for one-on-one meets too.
For those of us with larger boats with fixed engines VA requires a fuel line cut-off valve while on electric only lakes; it's not a big deal, but something we need to know before launching.
Thanks. Mower? Use cows! lolOn 10/12/2012 at 9:19 PM, Nitrofreak said:Wow Zoff you have a good looking place there big guy!!!

5 votes so far showing 5 different bodies of water,
Potomac, Chick River, Claytor, Occoquan Res. @ Fountainhead, and Gaston, Sounds like some pretty good choices so far, we are looking forward to seeing where this thing is going to end up.
Every part of the state is represented so far from North to South, so make sure you get your votes in everybody !!!!
i vote the potomac or fountainhead
Alright !!!!!
JSPOON don't forget to head over to the "Location for 2013 meet and greet" thread and cast your vote or vote's, you are able to cast more than one vote for where you would like to have it so we can have a record of the vote's please.
I hope you and Eddie are able to join us this time !!!
I will officially cast my vote for Smith Mountain....
...but i will be there no matter where it is.
Def interested fellas, and would happily try to make the next one if I could not make this one.
BB50, we would love to have you and your family there as well, it will be in the fall of 2013, you have plenty of time to make plans, cast your vote and try to get it in your area, the most votes for a location listed will be where the next one will happen.
We on the other hand do not have as much time, any reservations that must be made ahead of time must be made at least 3 months in advance, so knowing where the next one is going to be is important, please make sure you cast your vote and we hope to see you there !!!
Zoff, thanx for the vote !!!
I have not voted yet, the reason being is in the event of a tie, I will cast my vote as well at that time, I will put the tieing places in a drawing and draw one from random, so as you stated I am coming as well no matter where it ends up, I look forward to seeing you again soon !!
As of now we are in a 4 way tie, Potomac, Chick River, SML, and Claytor, all of them are great choices and we are looking forward to seeing where this will finally end up.

It appears you may have a question or two looking at your comment, do you have any?
It still looks like we have a lot of intrest in a good part of Va, From North to mid state Va.
I am really looking forward to seeing one of these places for the first time, honestly the Potomac has a lot of interest for me and the Chick River does as well, I am up for any of the places on the poll, regaurdless, if the opportunity presents itself I would not mind being able to fish any of these places with a couple/few of you guys throughout the upcoming year.

Even though you guys are Southerners, I would enjoy having you come up anytime you can make it, and we northerners will forgo the need for passports on your part.
We can do a day trip, or a weekend for you worker-bees, or some days during the week for you retirees. If your interested PM me and we can discuss details.
You'll need a tidal Potomac license, and if you would like to fish within the Nations Capitol you'll also need a D.C. license.
There's something special about fishing DC, on one side you have National Airport with its busy jets, on the other you have the National Monuments, you may even get to see Homeland Security pulling some training excise where they run around on the water like a bunch of kids playing Cowboys & Indians.
But beware, I'm not a pro fishing guide, I have days where I can't buy a bite, then I have other days where the Striper's won't leave me alone.
Just let me know what you can fit into your schedule and we'll work something out.

Now this will not be untill fall of next year, will you still be 15 by then?, another note, we would prefer that you get your parents permission or bring a parent with you to have some fun, I can see that you are fairly new to the forum as well, welcome!!
Knowing that you are new here, did you by chance get to read what we did with the last one?
Yeah well of course I have to have a parent with me. How else would I get there? and no I won't be 15, but ill get a temporary licensce. There's not need to buy one around here, its just small drainponds and a few offshoots of the potomac. Not like anyones gonna check my school ID to make sure I'm under 16 because I don't have a licensce. I'm probably the least of there worries. YES ! I'm glad to see that old line still gets a rise out of you VA guys.... LOL That line is only about 45 years old with me and I got it from a co-worker back around 1968 - 70.
My VA co-workers would ask me for my pass port when I worked in VA, I would tell them I'd show it to them if'n they could read; they threatened to blow the WW bridge to keep me out of the state and my response was they would sit idle all day cause there wouldn't be anyone to show them what to do......
Well that's what I'm here for - laughs - if not, I might as well head on down to the senior center and play cards with the old folk. As for target practice, I'm not worried, I'd probably be safer in front of your gun than driving on N. VA roads.
BTW, I have VA blood in me too, my Mom was born in Staunton....
You guys still get dizzy when you look up north for too long???
Keep ramp fees in mind.
At Hope Springs at Aquia Creek on the Potomac the cost is $20 a boat.
At Popular Springs on Gaston it is free.
At SML you can put in at the state park or one of the motels with a ramp for free if they will allow us to launch for free.
Can you all fill us in on the ramp fees at the other candidates?
On 10/18/2012 at 7:45 AM, Sam said:At SML you can put in at the state park or one of the motels with a ramp for free if they will allow us to launch for free.
SML has about 4 free ramps.

Smallwood State Park (Sweden Point Marina) is $10.00 with 6 ramps and ample parking. I believe I was told it's free if your an overnight guest, I'll double check this.
There is a free ramp further up the Mattawoman Creek which is about 15-20 min from the park but it's only one ramp and parking is limited; but it's a great place to launch from if your interested in the upper creek, and have a small boat or a yak.
The Marshall Hall Boat Ramp is a good half hour from the park and has two free ramps with ample free parking; and it's closer to DC if that is a goal. This ramp is open on the main river and subject to winds and river currents.
Traveler, remember that we may want to blast off on the Virginia side of the Potomac due to travel issues.
Also, we will need the special DC fishing license if we fish on the north side of the WW Bridge.
However, the Potomac is an outstanding fisheries and we could give a booby prize to the guy who catches the most snakeheads.
I still think a more central location would do better as we have a lot of nonboaters and we need boaters for the event to continue its success.
Buggs Island, Lake Gaston, Lake Chesdin, Potomac, Chick River, Chick Lake, James River, Briery Creek, Sandy Creek, SML, Moomaw are all possibilities.
Isn't it great to have so many choices????

There is Leesylvania State Park at 2001 Daniel K Ludwig Dr, Woodbridge, VA 22191.
It has two very wide ramps that will launch four boats abreast at one time, but is lacking on pier/dock access. So, if you launch in the middle of the ramp you'll need a driver in the boat to bring it to the dock.
Leesylvania (that must be some kind of Southerner made up name) has breakwaters to help protect the boats from wind, wave, and current action. I've had some luck working the rip-wrap of the breakwaters for bass and striper's.
I've been told the road into the park is a bit problematic if you have a big rig.
QUOTE:

UNQUOTE:
I'll go for any of the waters you listed, pick a day and let's get a line wet.
OK, there was a conversation between Zoff and I last night and there was a question raised about a deadline.
Finances were a big part of that discussion, so knowing this and knowing how much money each of us will need to save for what ever location is chosen by you guys is a huge factor.
What we are going to do is put the cut off at the first of January, this gives us plenty of time to schedule vacation days, save some bucks etc... we will go ahead and gather all of the availible info and post it for you guys and gals with prices on overnight stays at local campgrounds and hotels etc... we will have all of the best fishing reports that we can added to each area for the top five so that we can make the best decision possible.
We will try to have this information all wraped up and posted by the end of the first week of November it should give us plenty of time to have a place picked out and prepair for the trip.
We look forward to seeing where this ends up for this coming year and we can't wait to do it all again.
I'm Zoff and I approve this message!

YOUR A FREAKING NUT CASE !!!! LOL !!!
Alright guys and gals, here we go, keep in mind all prices are subject to change, prices are current rates.
Smith Mountain Lake
State park offers tent, RV camping and cabins
Rates for cabins are a 2 night minimum
Efficiency= $71 per night non resident= $88 per night
1 bedroom $84 $103
water view $106 $114
RV and tent sites
Standard $20 per night Water/Elect $ 27
parking pass
$3 per day during the week
$4 per day on the weekends
Boat launch fees
$2 per day for both weekday and weekends
One more option for SML is Zoff and his property, he and his family has VERY graciously offered anyone wanting to stay the night or night's a FREE place to stay, he is within an hours drive of SML.
At 20,600 acres of water, Smith Mountain Lake is one of the premier fishing lakes we have here in Va., it offers excellent fishing opportunities for Large Mouth Bass, Small Mouth Bass, black crappie, white crappie, catfish, both flathead and channel cats, and striper fish.
An average LMB is in the 2-4lb range, of course with opportunities in the 5lb range and up, the lake is known for it's excellent shoreline cover and structure by means of lay downs, boat docks and various brush and rock piles, the state park also has a fishing pier.
the highest density of bass can be found around several areas, 2 worth mentioning are the Hales Ford bridge area in the Roanoake River arm and bouy B-26 in the blackwater arm.
This lake is a host to the ESPN's Bass Master Elite Series Tournament Trail, ever wonder if you have what it takes to compete with the pro's, well here is your chance to fish the same lake they do, come get ya some !!!
Claytor Lake
The State park here offers the same as other state parks, with RV camping, tent and cabins, their rates are as follows.
All fees are the same as Smith Mountain Lake posted above.
The State park and it's surrounding area are absolutely beautiful, well maintained rest rooms and well groomed grounds around the state park.
At 4,475 acres, Fishing Claytor Lake is awesome !!!, the bass here are not as abundant, most are also in the 2-4lb range, this lake is known for large Small Mouth fishing, it has produced in one year 15 SMB certificates, over 5 lbs or 20 inches.
LMB, SMB, Black and White Crappie, Catfish, Spotted Bass, Stripers can be found here as well as Pike and Chain Pickerel.
Claytors bait fish include, Bluegill, Alewife, Gizzard, and crayfish, Crayfish are one of the mainstay's of the Bass's forage here, so if you like fishing a jig you will find some lunkers in this joint !!!
Largest LMB to date ay Claytor is 14lbs 6oz, thats a big fish !!
Most bass are located in the arm of Claytor Lake, but I can promise you this there are big bass in the coves here, they have huge,HUGE, amounts of cover scattered everywhere with access to deep water right along with that cover, if you want a shot at a big smallie, try your luck along some of the big steep rocky shorelines Claytor has to offer.
What really makes Claytor stand out is her people, Even in the middle of summer Claytor is not all that pressured with heavy boat traffic, I have found that people here know how to drive a boat, and also the people here are very quick to help you out with anything and will talk to you about anything.

Bass here range in the 2-4lb range as well, Bowfin however are in the 3-6 lb range, bait fish here are the Bluegill, and red eared sunfish, and gas powered engines have no restrictions.
The river has some of the most awesome cover you will ever see, with cypress trees and lilly pads GALORE !!!
Early morning top water action here is second to none they say with some of the most explosive action you will be able to find anywhere in Va. during spring and fall months of the year.
Occoquan Res.
Fishing the Occoquan Res. you will find that the average bass here is in the 4-6 lb range.
The Res is ranked #1 in catch per unit effort.
There are boat rentals and bait shops located at fountain head, I have yet to be able to contact someone for pricing however, the numbers listed in their web-site do not seem to work for an unknown reason. any help would be greatly appreciated.
As for camping there are areas that are local but no cabins and RV sites that could be found as of yet, any help here would also be greatly appreciated.
The Potomac has already been covered by Traveler in this thread.
Thanks for the great input for the Potomac Traveler !!!
If there is anything we have missed, please do not hesitate to add your comments to this thread and cast your votes in the " Location for the 2013 Meet and Greet" thread !!!!!
I will add to NitroFreak about the camping... My place is open to anyone. We have a location for camping and you can set up generators. There is access to the river and a pond for some light fishing while camping. There is a spigot with water and (Nitrofreak and I spoke of this) has potable water. Some splitters could be added and water hooked up to your camper. The camping area is flat and will accommodate a lot of people. Not to forget... a place for a sizable fire. My family would welcome all of you. My Father and I own the property and he would be proud to have you stay there. If not... I will be camping with everybody at the Lake so I am good with whatever is decided.
Page 5 of this thread has a view of our place.
Still only 4 votes total, I know there are more than 4 people interested in doing this.
Remember we want a decision by the first of January so everyone will have time to save up and get their reservations in on time !!!
If you have a preference please cast your vote, it looks like the Potomac and SML are in the running with the Potomac in the lead !!!!

OOPS !!!
I did forget to mention that didn't I LOL !!!

As I can fish the Potomac anytime, I've had a change of mind and would like to change my vote to Smith Mountain Lake; I'd like to try new water.
Your vote has been noted as a change Traveler thank you !!!
That makes SML tied with the Potomac right now.
Any other votes guys we need them soon ok !! January 1st is coming in a hurry !!!
I also voted for SML, I tried to find a decent campground and failed to find one that was RV friendly with in an hours drive on both sides, Va. and Md. however I found many that were tent/cabin friendly.
There has got to be more interest than what I am seeing in the voting thread. What gives?
did we set a date yet, im in as long as its not the last weekend of the month.
No s13John we have not set a date yet.
January 1st will be the cut off to find out where the meet and greet will be and then we will discuss dates, it's either going to be the end of August or sometime in September when school lets out so that the young ones can enjoy this as well, there is less boat traffic which makes the waters much safer for all who attend as well.
We look forward to meeting you and we know you will have a lot of fun !!!
Is the end of every month not good for you?
By the way it is 4 to 4 on the votes on SML and the Potomac, with one for the Occoquan !!!
We will have a great time so get your votes in !!!!

One thing I have noticed is the Thread for the Poll does not show up under the "View New Content" and never has. I just checked to make sure, and as I type this the Poll is not listed; However, if I go to the Southeast Forum and look, the Poll is listed with a star and is marked as Hot. I think this is a problem with the Forum web site it's self, people can not see the Poll unless they frequent the SE Forum. This Thread however is visible in the "View New Content".
If I am like most of us here, when I get on the Forum I first check "My Content" for new post, then I check "View New Content"; if a post is not in one of those two locations I don't see it.
EDIT: 11/19/12, 13:14L, I just sent a PM to the Mods asking if they know why we can't see the Poll under "View New Content". EMM

I too am in the automotive industry, I know what the end of the month means so we will try to work around that for ya !!
We may try to do a 2 day event, not sure yet, but I am sure we will work hard on trying to get everybody a ride.

IMHO, I hope we can meet members from other states, not just VA. I, myself, am a MD boy who would cross the river in a heartbeat to attend the VA M&G. So, I hope we'll see members from other states as well.
We can't let these VA boys have all the fun....
Another body of water that should be considered is Sandy River Reservoir - I personally know of at least 2 - 27" LMBs that were caught and released by DGIF during the spring of 2012 this year. It has a canoe/kayak launch off to the side away from the main two-boat launch with pier. There is also a fishing pier to the opposite side, and portions of the bank away from the launch are used as well for bank fisherman. There is a hp limit on the lake, but it's not what I would consider a major issue, as there is every type of boat configuration and hull type used there. I have fished there for the last 4 years and won the last two kayak tournaments based there this year.
There are several deep channels, ledge transitions, coves, submerged timber/laydowns, points, etc. You should consider it, especially since its only 15 minutes away from Briery Creek and is often forgotten.
Check it out....
http://www.dgif.virg...play.asp?id=114
It is a beautiful spot for sure, I could not find any camping close to the res. unless I went to Briery Creek, which is also a beautiful place, we did however include Briery Creek as one of our choices for the Meet and Greet, but it got no votes.
We will include it again next year as one location, each year we want to go to a different spot in Va. to have a chance to fish and have some fun with friends and family, we are trying our best to get families more involved with an outing such as this one.
We started out with Lake Anna this year, even though we did not get the turn out we had hoped for, we had an awesome time, we are looking to give non-boaters a chance to fish waters they may not otherwise ever have the chance to fish, the camping and other things like the picnic we have after the day of fishing allows people to talk and get aquainted with other anglers and their families, we had support from this site and some of our associated sponsors on this last trip and we were able to give out door prizes, but the best part was having fun fishing and meeting with other members.
We must find areas that allow all of us to do everything we love to do, along with a gathering area for the families to be able to sit down for a meal together, State Parks are one of Va's greatest resources for allowing us to do just that and one we felt should be included in our decision making process.
There is a poll for the Meet and Greet for this up coming year, the top 5 areas that everyone voted for are there, The Potomac, the Occoquan, Smith Mountain Lake, are all in the running right now and which ever place has the most votes is where we will have it at, as of right now, the votes are 4 to 4 with SML and the Potomac tied up, the Occoquan has 2 votes, the end of the voting will be the last day of December, January 1st we will start making plans for the location, this allows everyone time to save funds and make the appropriate reservations needed for the upcoming event.
The info for all of these places are listed in the thread with the poll "Locations for the 2013 Meet and Greet" we unfortunately did not get a lot of input but we did list just about every body of water we could think of, so your input would be greatly appreciated and we look forward to metting you should you decide to participate
Looking forward to it - at this point for me, it is all about the timing of the event, because I have a "bun in the oven" on the way and due in late June. Anything in the spring up until late May will most likely be workable, but after that, the dates would need to be "discussed with the spousal unit"
Congrats !!!!!
Thoughts and prayers for a healthy and safe delivery for your family !!!!
Hope you can join us, it will be in the fall after school is out so the youngsters can join us as well, late August or sometime in September is when we are disscussing, but the date will be decided at the first of the year for one of those 2 months.
It's now 5 to 4 between the Potomac and SML, with the Potomac out in front, the Occoquan has 2 and now the Chick is up and running with one vote.
It's tight between the 2 front runners, we have the month of December to decide so who's it gonna be ????
This is getting exciting !!!!!
Like I said on the Phone with NF today... I will be glad to fish anywhere. Biggest problem I have is the cost of lodging. IIRC... there were no State Park facilities or camping at the Potomac so that equates to high cost hotels if you don't want to stay in rough parts of the area. Keep that in mind guys. I'm coming either way but will look for alternatives to hotels.

Smallwood state park has cabins and camping. As a bonus, they are within walking distance of the boat ramp, which is excellent. Best of all, the site is located on Mattawoman creek, one of the best (and most pressured) fishing spots on the Potomac.

Zoff, are you talking about the VA side of the river?? MD has Smallwood State Park with camping, cabins, and the best launch facilities along the MD side; also the LaPlata and Waldorf areas (20 to 30 min drive) have excellent hotels that regularly see tournament anglers. B.A.S.S. has held tournaments out of Smallwood many times. Get Nitro and come on over one weekend and I'll show you around.

Same as the VA side........
A VA tidal license and one qt. of shine for the MD guy...
Check VA regs, here are Md's. http://dnr.maryland....license.asp#RCP
When I called Smallwood, the person there said there was no sites that would work for my camper, I have a 31 foot travel trailer, he also told me there was no over flow parking where I could keep my boat.
There was also a conversation about hook-ups all they had was electric only, the camper does have a fresh water tank holding tank which would be no problem, but there seems to be no way to camp there cause it does not offer the room to allow a RV to be set up there.
It sounds to me like it is ment for camping tents and cabins only, so how much of this is true?
As far as the license goes all we need in addition to our state licence is a saltwater stamp as well? The shine wont be an issue either !!!
Zoff, as far as when, I may have an opening next weekend, or we may take a day off and head toward Traveler's house.
OK... we have a plan....
OK... we have a plan....
Zoff,
I will get with you and see what dates are available by the first of the week.
Traveler,
Do you know of any other campgrounds that are in close proxy to that area?
Pohick is another option, and they do allow camping trailers (and have all the necessary hookups). I've camped there overnight w/ the boat. I think there is a two vehicle limit per site.
http://www.nvrpa.org/park/pohick_bay/
NICE JOB MUDKART !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I looked t that place and it is exactly what I needed !!!
Prices are not bad either, cabins look great too !!!
Thanx buddy !!!!
It's just a short trip down the Potomac to get to Mattawomen too, I will gather all the info for those who may be interested here as well !!

Traveler,
Do you know of any other campgrounds that are in close proxy to that area?
Cedarville State Forest is the only other State Park in the area; it's 45 min from the launch at the Mattawoman creek. Cedarville is like Smallwood in that it too only has electric and no water. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/southern/cedarville.asp
Smallwood does have a parking area with electric within the camp site area for boats, and I've seen tournament anglers parallel park along the roads at the camp site with their boats. There is a water faucet along the road near the bath house for topping off tanks, and a dump station nearby as well.
P.S. any days are good for me to have you visit, just let me know what works for you...
I think I am going with Mudkart's suggestion, full hook up's are $41 per night, and I can put my boat on the site as well, I am going to call them when they open for the season and get some more info, but the way it looks if some of these tent guys want to split the costs, they allow like 4 tents per site, but that has NOT BEEN CONFIRMED YET !!!!
I will however like I said, have more info on the place, if so desired, once they open for the season.
I did already look at that place you suggested also, it's pretty close to the same as Smallwood, RV sites are only 30 feet in length like Smallwood too.
I still wish to come up there and take a gander around with ya to see what's what though.

Such good people. You guys are great. Thanks!
I'm looking at joining you guys for the meet and greet. Quick question about the Potomac... I fish out of a Pond Prowler 55# TM. If the meet and greet is there, will it be too much for my little raft to handle?
Thanks and I look forward to getting out and meeting you guys and learning something about bassin in VA.

Well, you have two possible choices, 1. you could ride with one of us as a co-angler, or 2, you can use your boat in the upper Mattawoman at Slaven's ramp. How many will your boat hold, 1,2,3???

Is that not where some of the best fishing on the Potomac is anyway Traveler?
BlackMagic82, it's nice to have you on board sir, Welcome to the forum !!!
We look forward to meeting you, keep an eye out, the winner of the meet and greet spot is soon to be announced !!!
To add to Travelers post, it would be nice if we could gather all the rides we could for some available seating, if we need it, last time a few stayed home because we did not have enough boats, we would like to have all the boaters we can get, so if your ok with getting around with yours and a guest, I would like to hold you as a boater for now, is that OK ?

If it's @ Pohick, I would bring your TM and battery, then rent one of the john boats available. Lots of good spots within range of that setup. Heading back into the creeks, you may even catch a snakehead ( I did catch one very close to the rental docks last year, most will be found back in the creek areas).
My trolling motor tends to get stuck in all the grass when I head that way mud..... you get the same?
On 12/14/2012 at 11:47 PM, Bigbarge50 said:My trolling motor tends to get stuck in all the grass when I head that way mud..... you get the same?
Not much. It depends on the time of year and tide. If you head nearly straight west from the ramp in August, then yes, you'll have problems. Heading more northwest to what is loosely termed a "channel" (more like a weed free area that is ~2-3 ft deep) and following that (past the island) is easier. If the tide is up you can get to the mouth of the creek on plane no problem.

This is an area where I will keep both motors out of the water and use my push-pole to move around. I don't go in there much any more because it's so shallow and it's harder to push a glass boat as opposed to my old aluminum boat. It has been a good place for Snakeheads, they like the slack water & weeds.
I completely forgot about Pohick Park as a camp site, I know it's a busy launch, and you can run into a mud flat if your not very careful, but I don't know anything about the park.
Yeah in summer i try to stick to the "channel" out of the weeds..... I have not been there at other times, so will have to check it out then. Even at high tide, the trolling motor (i am in the rear on the transom) tends to just get stuck.....dragging a forest of weeds behind me.
I do think in summer despite the shallow water it produces because 1)- Apple cover 2)- so much weeds keep the water crystal clear and super oxygenated so the fish do not need to retreat deep for oxygen.
I have never been able to pull a snakehead, which is disappointing Never even seen one but I know many people who have gotten them in there.
