fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

Going to hit it up tommorow, how'd you do today? Better than thursday i hope!

fishing user avatarAnglerNFuego reply :

I'll be there in the morning then hit 28 in search of some smallies.

fishing user avatarflippin4it. reply :

I fished the lower Potomac this morning from 7:15 until 12:30. Shakey head was the key, boated 4 keepers. I'll be hitting Mercer at about 7:00 and coming in on the same side as Thursday. Off of Wagon Trail.

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

I went to Mercer on Friday and again today, it was pretty cold both days.  I caught seven fish ( a 2.25lb, a 1.25lb and the others were around 1lb) total between the two days, Jason caught a 2.75lb lmb yesterday. I would go again tomorrow but I have to drive my daughter to Reagan National Airport in the moring. Good luck guys, I hope someone pulls in a hog. I want to see some pictures in this thread after your trip.

Thanksgiving break has been crazy man.  I'm spending some time with friends and my sister tonight drinking and partying before she goes back to Tennessee tommorrow.  I'll have the hog up tommorrow.  Caught him on a medium sized smokey joe rat-l-trap.  Finally pulled outta the slump.  Talk to you guys soon.  Hitting up Fountainhead Tuesday morning if anyone is interested.  Found a nice little spot last time there with some deep water access, a nice drop off and a nice flat.  Should be good feeding in the early morning hours.  Plan on being there between 8:15 and 11:30.  Give my cell a ring if you wanna join me.  Most of you should have it by now.  Hope you all had a good holiday and a great weekend.  Enjoy the time off work.  Football tommorrow!!! WOOOO!!!

fishing user avatarflippin4it. reply :

Crushed 'em, had a good day. Landed 8, biggest about 2. Mostly dinks. Dedicated myself to fishing only the shakey head.Lost a bigun', well over 4 pounds. Thats how it goes.

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

Did you go to Mercer?!?!? Man! i was looking for someone to go with me. I needed help with the raft and so when no one could make it i decided to not go. Anyone free this weekend? I really want to get out there and catch something.

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

I went to Mercer for a couple of hours in the afternoon today. I caught 1 dink and a 3lb LMB but am concernrd about the way it looks. It has a bunch of black spots on it. Any guesses why it looks this way? I lost a large one by the dam, I yanked to hard to set the hook when I saw him hit my crankbait close to shore, he looked to be at least three pounds.

I guess I am the only one posting pictures for today.

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Thats definately some type of bacteria on that fish.  It's not a spotted bass for sure, definately a largemouth.  But I'd be concerned about the bacteria spreading especially if it is becoming a problem with the larger fish.  Hopefully not many fish are affected cause that could be devasting on Mercer's population.  I'd call vdgif or the community and let them know about the fish.  That might be alarming enough that they send someone out to do a small electro sampling of the lake and see if they can find any others affected by it.  Just my opinion though.  Later.

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

I started a thread under the "general bass" area and people are saying it is a pigmentation issue called hyperpigmented melanosis and it is not harmful, however Auburn University is doing a study on this problem in TN. I am going to notify VDGIF about this in case they want to research it. The only problem may be the possibilty of VDGIF closing the lake to fishing if a study is needed.

That's good you are going to notify them.

Here's the pic from Saturday. 2lbs 12oz, missed my pb by two ounces but broke out of a nasty slump that lasted for about my last 5-6 outings. Caught on a smokey joe rat-l-trap by casting out into deep water from the clearing.

Nice fish J, and Ron thats one crazy lookin bass :)

sounds like the Trap is killin em'. I got one this weekend just burnin it. I guess the fish aren't as slugish as I thought in this cold weather.

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

d**n...alright gonna go out and get some rat-l-traps nows....now i just got to worry about not losing them on some stupid shrub like i did with Andy's  :-X  ;D

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

I just sent an email to VDGIF about the LMB with the hyper-pigmented melanosis. I am waiting on a response from them about this fish and what they know about it. I will post the information as soon as they get back to me.

I also sent an email to Auburn University to the attention of the "Wildlife Management Department" that is studying this problem in hopes of learning more about this condition.  I will keeep you all posted on any response I get back from them as well.

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

Here is the response from the VDGIF.

Ronald,

The pigmentation documented in your photo is quite common in tributaries of the Potomac and the Potomac proper.  Occasionally we also see fish with melanosis at Lake Anna.  This phenomenon is nothing to be concerned about and is not considered problematic.

Thanks for your interest and concern for Virginia's natural resources.

Good to hear.

fishing user avatarflippin4it. reply :

Several of the bass I have caught in Mercer over the past couple of years have had the spots. The 7+ pounder caught early in the spring had them. I have also seen Hank Parker catch them with spots. No biggie.

fishing user avatarmayassa reply :

I drive by 28 every day on 66 how do I get to the fishing hole??

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

mayassa, if he's talking about the one that some of us other guys go to then it's the one near Bull Run Regional Park. To get there from 66, get off on the rt. 28 exit and go south. Continue south until you pass the intersection of Rt. 28 and Compton Rd. Soon after you will see a bridge. Do not cross the bridge, take the last right you can before it. That will lead you to a small parking lot where you can park legally and fish Bull Run. You can fish either downstream (go under the bridge to your left as you walk down from the parking lot) or upstream by walking up a hill and down the other side (directly over that hill is a good rock bluff that often holds smallies)

fishing user avatarmayassa reply :

Thanks now I know where to go when the traffic really sucks

fishing user avatarmayassa reply :

I just found the hole using map quest satellite view I would have never guessed it thanks again :)

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

sure thing, good luck.
