Heading out to Fountainhead tomorrow with a buddy, wanted to know if anyone wanted to share any good spots to hit. I've been there a couple of times with the wife and kids with now luck, so i figured I would come here and ask.
Thanks in advance
Just got back from Fountainhead and all but struck out. Tried everything in the tacklebox and only landed a dink and a couple sunfish. They must be deep, where I don't know how to get at them.
Good luck,
Thanks, well I guess I'll just to see what I found out tomorrow morning.
I'll update this post with my results tomorrow.
Hit the main points with deep diving cranks, suspending jerk baits, jigs, and carolina rigs. if that is not working try throwing spinnerbaits and shallow cranks tight to wood and on gradual slopes. As the sun gets up and the water warms concentrate deep or in shaded water.
If all else fails go to a wacky rigged senko type bait on the dropoffs in the same areas.
Good luck.
Throw a shakey head in "no less" than 8ft of water on a main lake point or C-rig a grn/pmkin Brush Hog.

No problem, I'll be doing it on Sunday.......
Well Jules5, I hope you had better luck than me. I got the ol' goose egg. Tried jigs, c-rigs, spinnerbaits, shakey head, cranks, on points, grass, wood, the dam :-? I've been doing pretty crappy lately.

Let us know how you do tomorrow. Hopefully you can crack the code ;D
The tournament last sunday was rough too. We did quite well, finished in 8th place out of 33 with 11.33lbs only caught 5 though. The 6 fish limit is killing us ;D. Caught most on jigs and trigs, rock bluffs and gradual slopes on the main lake.
Quotegradual slopes on the main lake.
There is the key, but in no less than 8ft of water. I'll post up how we do. It will do or die!!!!
Well, the term would be died by it. Boated 2. But with the times we are in (at war, economy, price of gas, ect.) a bald eagle did a fly by about 25 feet over our heads and made me think about being an American and the right there was all I needed for a great day of fishing.............
I saw it too. My buddy pointed it out yesterday. Havent seen one in a while.
I have seen them before, but never that close.
I saw a bald eagle doing the Eagle Claw commercial at Hunting Run Lake a couple of weeks ago. He caught a good one.
The bald eagle exists, I will attest to that, but the bass are another story. Fished my favorite producing main points and slopes but not so much drop offs and got 2. Both came early on the shakey head. I had quite a few hits but since it's been a while doing the shakey head thing I missed a few.
Lots of shad were balled up today and look like they were being actively chased. Spent some time chasing them and throwing everything that has worked before with no luck. At least all my lipless cranks got washed today.
I'll be out this week sometime pre fishing for the tourney on Sunday. I'm wondering if the uplake bite is any good right now, I mean way up in the "river" to the left of the splits. Is that where you went Rob? We've been going down lately, haven't been up in a few months and our boat ain't fast enough to go back and forth in a tournament
Headed out towards the right from the dock
Well, as the term "Skunked" has been going around, that is what happened to me yesterday. First cast, I had nice bite, went to set the hook, snag...My buddy throws his line in brings it in a little over pound. He releases cast back out, another bite, its a dink.
I finally get my bait back, re-cast snag, first three casts nothing but bad luck, you can only imagine what happens from there...couple of bites no fish. I caught more "Tree fish" as my buddy calls them than anything.
I threw senkos, tube, jigs, finesse worms, spinners, crank, nothing all day. My buddy on the other hand, caught 4 bass and 1 crappie.
I saw the mentioned bald eagles, that everyone has mentioned, there were two one was in a tree, making its calling sound, you can hear one in the distance replying, it moved closer later and they both were in the neighboring trees.
All in all, I was furious that day...My buddy and I were so far out, we had to row the boat back from the point by the red house to the dock...it was a long and frustrating day for me. I probably wont be fishing next weekend, for about the last two or three months, I have fished every weekend.
For those that were expecting some good info, SORRY couldn't be of more help, i will try again just don't know when.
In regards to Fountainhead as a whole, why the heck do the charge so much and not rent gas motors or at least provide you with two batteries. I have fished at Burke and Lake Ridge and their prices are far cheaper for rentals (Lake ridge is cheaper if fishing for 5 hours).
Anyhow, thanks again for all of those that provided info; its well appreciated just not well applied I guess ;D

Matt, the "up" river bite as far as I have heard is not there. I was down in the main lake from 6-12 and Pounded it out like Ib] was fishing a tourney and only caught them at the mouth of Sandy Run, it looks like we found something in that area and will see if it pays of on Sunday for my buddy. He will pre-fish it on Saturday and see if it still holds fish, but as far as size this year, it's still very hit or miss. It has been a tough year in alot of places. I hope it turns on in the fall and the spinnerbait bite comes back strong like last year. Oh, one more thing. I did throw the Money minnow to no avail too...... :-/
I was watching a discovery channel show that said Taxi cab drivers tend to spend more time on the road on hard days and less time on a good day when fares comes easy. Their point was that this is counter productive since on bad days they should just go home and on good days stay out and make more money.
Of course I saw this show after spending five ours in a yak at Fountainhead on Friday. Yah, my @ss hurt. I planned on being off the water in 3 hours and probably would have if I caught some keepers.
No bird would have made me feel better, but as we say, any day fishing is a good day.

Ours Died too. ;D we rowed back and my buddy raised hell and we got a free battery and went back out for a few hours. It does get frustrating but having an anchor helps some.
My fish came down lake too. Both south of Sandy Run. I picked the wife up at Lake Ridge around 11 (she had lunch so I couldn't refuse) and we went up lake to the Occoquan River and no luck up there. Only threw some c-rigs and shakey heads for a little near that "island" before the weather started to turn. no takers.
I welcome the spinnnerbait bite return. I had one last weekend on it but nothing since.

Tell your buddy good luck gettin there fast....The past few tournaments there have been people sitting on that spot all day long. As well as the roadbed down in Hooes run, but we never make it down that far. Let alone do we know where that roadbed is ;D

QuoteWell thats good!! Who is he? Where was Gerkin at the last tourney?
First question, I'm not telling.
Second question, no clue.
If you want any info on pre-fishing a tourney, just ask on a PM.

and she was shaking a shakey head all day during your prefish right? :
