All along since I have moved to Jacksonville, about 3 months ago, I have been searching for a lunker pond and it has been in my backyard this whole time....
Here are some of the fish I caught today. I was fishing for about 1 hour and a half and I caught 8 in total all over 2.5lbs. Should have been 9 because I caught one that was easily 4lbs and I brought him on land and was about to lip em to get the hook out and he jumped, hook popped out, and he rolled back into the lake and swam off!!! I also had a huge one jump out of the water and the hook flew right out of his mouth, easily bigger than any of the ones I have in these pictures.
I caught them using spinner baits, black and pink power bait worm, and a lure that resembles a shiner.
Here are some pics of the fish I caught....
Nice lands good job!! kepp them coming ...
Thanks man
Wow! U got it made right outside ur door lol. Nice catches
Thanks for sharing.
It hit up that pond near racetrack and bartram sat, we were a little late. Deffinatly some bass, most caught or seen were smaller. Looks heavy fished tho, found someone's old senko type bait, and another couple people showed up but didn't stay long. I want to hit it up earlier, let u know if I get anything.
Nice catches!
I have a pond right by where I live and I've caught some huge fish out of it this year. It's nice to just be able to walk out your door and catch nice fish.

You talking about the one on the corner right before the light on racetrack and bartram? Me and my girlfriend saw someone and their son fishing there in a silver or white SUV could have been you? We were gonna check it out but we went to the Publix pond instead then went to grab some dinner.
Today right before dinner around 8:20pm I was fishing my backyard and I hooked a HUGE one easily 6lbs and was well over 22 inches jumped straight out of the water and took my hook right off! I need to learn to tie better knots because this was at least the 3rd or 4th one i lost like that today.

Yes it is man I didn't know I had fish this big right in my back yard and I have seen much bigger I think they are spawning or something because I see them close to shore and in groups of 2.
Nah that wasnt me I was there in the am. Til about 10:30. Went this morning little later than I wanted got 4 half strikes on a zoom toad the I left went to publix I had the one I was after but it eluded me again. Zoom trick worm keeps balling on hookset. SMH ..,,.......what kind of knot u using? How many # line? I use palomar knot on my hooks, the line will snap before that knot will give. Lol

I use the trilene knot and I have 8# test on my line, might even be 10# I forget which I put on this time.
My knots are usually reliable so i guess the fish that take my hooks are monsters lol. But I am gonna try to learn a different knot
The palomar knot is probably the easiest to tie and I have never had it fail. Once you get it down it's really fast to tie.
My girlfriend pulled out a 2# and a 2.6# last night around 7pm. So far we haven't caught anything under 2# there so I am betting that there are some MONSTER FISH in there somewhere it's just a matter of time before I get em on my hook!
I caught these 2 bass today around 5:20pm. I caught the smaller one first, 2.5#, and then I caught the big one after, 4.10#.
I caught 6 fish today in my pond and I was fishing for a little over a hour.
There is something even bigger out in my pond because I hooked it twice and it took the hook right off. I just saw its body flash about 5 feet off shore and it was huge!
4.10#
4.10#
4.10#
2.5#
Nice fish. Better be careful that monster might be a gator lol

I have been in Jacksonville since feb. and the only place I have seen a gator is alligator farm in Saint Augistine lol. You know any places around here that have em in them I am from NJ so I would like to see one in the wild when I am fishing. I also haven't seen a water moccasin yet either
Yeah it took me 2 yrs before I saw a gator when I lived in St Pete. the pond on AC Skinner near Belmont has a big gator I am told. Another was spotted at a park. Check out Guana lake, catch some reds and see some gators. Cottonmouths are all over, shoot the one on the corner of racetrack n bartram, they are pretty much everywhere. We saw a Pygmy rattler at the preserve. If u like hiking check it out, there is a 2 mile round trip to a creek that looks straight un touched bayou. Pygmys are very common too, and they are too small to hear their rattle so watch where u step. Speaking of stepping u get a chance to be bit by the fire ants lol I just stepped in a nest the other day man, not fun. And scorpions too, just found one hiding in a closet. U be careful out there lol Florida is a jungle.

My girlfriend was wearing sandals when we were fishing at a pond in a development and she stepped on a fire any pile and her foot got attacked lol that was a couple days ago
Yea man I like snakes and gators I just haven't seen any outside of an artificial habitat or a fish tank lol I am gonna check out some of those spots
I went fishing this morning at 6:20 and I caught the 4.10# AGAIN!!!
It has a gash on its left side & I weighed it that is how I know it was the same EXACT fish... caught the same one within a 12 hour period.
I also caught this 3.5# about 10 to 15 minutes after...
Those are some fat catches there lol! Nice fish!
4.2#
Dude you are Blessed!!!! Can I come up there, I usually go to Yulle to vist friends I sold them a property there. I plan to come there and get on the oyster beds, I see there r some great reds there, thats salt water action!!! Great pics.

Nice catch there AK, you must have switched the reels back lol man I am gonna start hanging out in your part of town lol I haven't been able to get up to my spots lately just been fishing publix had a decent one bout 3 pounds break off on Monday but you are pulling out the 4's and 5' left n right lol

I didn't switch back reels with her lol. I keep catching them in the same area of the pond. Now my girlfriend is getting frustrated because she hasn't caught anything in the past couple days lol. She likes using live shiners more than soft plastics and lures so I am going to pick her up some tomorrow.
There is a pond on the corner of veterans parkway and racetrack that I am going to check out tomorrow. I saw a father and son fishing there on fathers day. I wanna find some other nice spots that have some big fish in them because mine has really slowed up compared to the amount of fish I was pulling in before.
But there is a monster and I mean monster in my lake. My girl saw it first on Saturday around 1pm. She was freaking out about how big it was and when I looked over I just saw a huge cloud of mud in the water from when it swam off. Then about a hour later or so I just went down to the water without my rod and saw the beast chilling exactly where my girl said she saw it. They always look a lot smaller, to me atleast, when they are in the water and this one had to be at least 10# if not more!

Yeah I saw one from a ways off. Spent 15 minutes not spooking it. Was like screw it walked over to the culvert n it was a grass carp. First n only one I ever seen in the pond lol u better make sure u ain't seeing carp lol

No it wasn't a carp there are 2 carp in this pond that I have seen an they are silver colored. This was definitely a bass had the green tint with black on it. It was about 2 feet or so from the shore line basically taunting me saying I dare you try and catch me I bet you won't lol.
I was out fishing last night before the Heat game....
i caught this 4.5# on a black and blue jig. I casted out once and brought it back, then I casted in the exact same spot and then boom the fish took it I set the hook and it swam right to the top of the water and jumped out. It was a hell of a fight it jumped out of the water 4 times before i finally got it on shore.
I caught this 2.4# today around 6:30pm using a 5 inch Senko worm. This one took the senko right as I was about to take it out of the water and recast. Not too much of a fight at all since it was right there.
I caught this 3.6# about 20 minutes later on the same 5 inch Senko worm. This fish put up a hell of a fight as well jumped out about 2 times and it was pretty strong.
This weekend I am going to hit up a few local lakes around my house and see what I catch. If I get and nice ones I will post some of them.... if all else fails then I will pack up and go in my backyard and try to get the monster I saw last weekend.
Nice ones. Where u heading? Just some local JCP neighborhood lakes? Bite has been pretty good last two days, yesterday especially. Good luck

I fished the pond on the corner of racetrack and veterans and caught 3 2# and I missed about 2 other fish. Then I fished this one pond in one of the developments heading towards publix but no luck. Now I am back home and I'm using google earth to find a pond close to me and check it out.
You heading out this weekend?
I am probably going to check out those ponds u told me about by the citi bank complex on old saint Augustine either later today or tomorrow

Was out this morning got 4 in about an hour and couple misses, all under or around 12 inches. If you head over that way take right at second light past 95 the funny shaped pond on left in the business park before u get to the Citi bank ponds. I fished it a few weeks ago had a few strikes, it was during the week it rained a lot and fishing was slow. If the weather holds of might take the family out for blue gills n such or go to the beach. Wife just got a license to fish and a crem rig lol
whats up guys im new to the forums. My original ? i was gonna ask was if yall have been catchin any since all the rain but this forum answered that lol. Before the rains i was tearin em up in my ponds i fish but now my ponds have stopped biting.... my ponds gained alot of water and are really clear and im seein alot of baby bass and bream now... i was also thinking that since its getting hotter now maybe theyve gon deeper? maybe thats why im not gettin the amount of catches i was... i have a couple ponds around baymeadows that ive caught between 10 and 20 a trip in but now im lucky to get one or two... Any insight to my problem would be much appreciated. And good catches btw AK Ive only found one pond aroun that consistently produced nice fish then i got told i couldnt fish there anymore... I caught the two hogs in my profile pic there plus another 6. im workin on gettin written permission to fish there again, well hope to here from yall soon!

Thanks man. Good to see another local from Jax on this site that can offer some new spots to fish.
As far as the pond that you found and got kicked from as long as there's no "no trespassing signs" or "no fishing from people's backyard (says something to that effect)" then it is fair game. I got pulled over for the HID head lights I have on my car when I was coming back from fishing and the cop happened to fish as well so I was asking him some questions about the area and regulations.... and he didn't even give me a ticket or a written warning!
But the fishing has slowed up TBH the past 2 weeks or so. I use to catch a lot more in my pond and now it has slowed down significantly. Now I usually catch a majority of my fish between 4:30 and 8:30pm. I think you are right about them going deeper because I use to see them along the banks and caught them fairly close to shore. Now I don't see any and rarely see them chase the bait to shallow waters. That is why I fish closer to when it starts to get dark out because the temps cool down and I figure they come to shallower water to eat.
I am trying to find a new pond that has big fish in it but so far I haven't had much luck. I'll probably check out some ponds over by baymeadows this week.
You ever make it to the citi banks ponds?
It is about to rain some more! Ponds are gonna get even higher. Some it is good some it makes it harder.
If you go in the am the are pretty shallow on the outside of the weeds. The big one I spotted was up there with them but just not biting.
If your head up to bay meadows follow it around until it turns to gate you will be in heaven bro we went that way to St johns towncenter and ibsaw tons of spots. there are also spots off JTB and 95 iv fished one off ac skinnerI
Told my wife we are goin to have to move to Jacksonville. She wasn't impressed with my rationale.

Yea there are ponds all over Jacksonville and FL in general. It seems like every single development in Jax has at least one pond in it all which hold fish. Every time I go somewhere I see ponds and people fishing. I have heard some good stories about VA fishing as well. My girlfriend has family in VA so when we decide to visit them I am bringing my fishing gear and am going to spend at least 2 to 3 days checking out the VA fish.

Yeah man I got back into fishing when I lived up in northern Virginia. It is nice to be able to drive or walk to a pond 5 minutes away instead of a 20 or 30 minute ride minimum to get skunked. Nothing wrong with va lakes and rivers but being without a boat and mostly pond fishing as a kid I enjoy that much better. Nice to go saltwater fishing too which I am going work on doing more of that.

Cool man, yeah up there the ponds are probably a lot older the one I fished on AC skinner was built in the 90's so they might hold them giants u r looking for.

Yea hopefully the hold a couple monsters in there that I can get on my line.
Yea tomorrow is suppose to be the big day but I have a feeling he is going to be late. So I am guessing probably around Friday. I am really excited about my first born, but that means I will have to cut down on fishing for the next couple of months which I am not excited about lol.
With all of the getting up early and feeding him and changing him I will be doing a lot of morning fishing now thats for sure
Well congrats to both of u. Good luck. Hope all goes well, God Bless.
Deffinatly first month or two sleep is tough. But u already got the right idea. When mine would wake up for the 5 or 6 am feedings, drop baby back down and hit the water for a few hours while they all sleep.
That is exactly what I plan on doing hopefully the big ones are out when the time comes
My biggest so far guess it was about 5 pounds was at around 8 am. N my second biggest around 3 pounds was at just before 6 am

Ive been trying from about 4 till dark in my ponds and still nothing... I'm baffled ..... everything that used to work doesnt now... i leave on wednesday and will be gone to monday but if you want when i get back i can show you a few ponds.... One of my favorites is on western lake road its a really big pond and has produced alot of fish for me until recently i went a few days ago any hooked one but my personal best was 14 catches out of about 20 i hooked in about 3 hr time and all around 2 lbs but that was when the water was real low and i didnt see alot of small fish but now i see alot of baby bass and bream so im guessin there isnt a shortage of food now... idk but i gotta figure something out.. ive talked to some ppl that said 10 and 12 lbers have been caught out of there and i believe it the pond has been there 20 or so yrs...

Yea there are alot of off Gate and JTB There is a good one behind black creek outfitters across from BJ's where you ate and i saw a guy catch an 8 out of there about 2 months ago and ive caught a few 4's.. there is a small wooden dock back there but you cant fish from it during BCO's working hrs because they use the pond to demo kayaks... Overall good place thought... Also there is a good looking one right by the town center called big island swamp you can clearly see it on google maps but unfortunately it has posted signs all around it.... but I talked to a guy that has lived here his whole life and he said the majority of these ponds have been here almost 20 yrs. The BCO pond is actually there because of a natural spring that feeds it... Anyways hope that helps yall out a lil if you come over this way!

Yea man when you get back we should definitely link up and hit up some spots. I need to catch me a 10 to 14# bass
On 6/25/2012 at 10:25 AM, pondslayer said:Yea there are alot of off Gate and JTB There is a good one behind black creek outfitters across from BJ's where you ate and i saw a guy catch an 8 out of there about 2 months ago and ive caught a few 4's.. there is a small wooden dock back there but you cant fish from it during BCO's working hrs because they use the pond to demo kayaks...
Yea man I know the ponds that you are talking about. I am going to check out the pond by BCO one day this week.
By any chance do you know if there are any no fishing signs there? Because the cop told me if there are no signs then anywhere is fair game as long as you have a fishing license. I guess that's why try charge you $50 plus to have one (since I haven't been a resident of FL for 6 months I had to pay that it is probably cheaper if you are a resident of FL)
I am looking for a spot with some nice big fish at least 7# and up.

there are no fishing signs on one side of the pond but thats because an apt complex put the signs up for liability purposes im guessin, they say somethin about no fishing or feeding wildlife snakes gators... blah blah blah,,, but there is a turn right before bco and right after bonos bbq and i trail that everyone drives theyre vehicles back in on the back side and there are no signs on that side ! good luck... I've always had my best luck on plastic worms in there but that guy that caught the 8 was usin a white spinner bait!
All of this rain has been killing the fishing for me. I caught one around 7 right after that last tropical storm came through and really nothing since then. It probably doesn't help that I don't really have a way around and I have to fish the same pond all the time lol. Hopefully I can get something soon and try out some of these other ponds ya'll talk about.
Has anyone ever fished the pond beside Gander Mountain? It looks really nice with lots of pads but I've never fished it before. I also saw some really nice spots in the Argyle area the other day that I want to try.

I fished a couple spots in the Argyle area. I caught 4 of them out there between 2# and 4#. I saw 2 kids in a boat and one landed a 7# in the pond I was fishing.
I am going over by Gander Mountain on Wednesday so I will bring my stuff with me and check the pond out. I need to find a spot where they got some monsters in em.
I have a couple spots with some monsters in them on my side of town. 9+ lbers.

Yeah that pond at gander looks really nice. Never tried it, too far north for me.
All this rain today is gonna switch things up again. Ponds are so deep right now.
Hopefully this rain helps the fishing this time but I have a feeling it's gonna make it worse

Look up 30°22'33.18"N , 81°47'34.56"W with Google Earth. All of those ponds in that area hold huge fish, most of them are old farm ponds that have been around 20+ years. It gets a good amount of pressure though so fishing can be tough sometimes. I've caught some 8s out of there and have seen some 10+ caught.

Nice. They look like fun to fish small enough to work all angles. I doubt I will ever make it over there though. Just out of curiosity a fishing buddy of mine was wonder about that big cove near blanding and kingsley is that lakeside? You ever fish there? He was talking about slough park or something.
Doctors Lake? I've never fished it before but it's a pretty popular spot, I always see a lot of nice bass boats in their. There are lots of docks to fish around. Swimming Pen creek which runs into Doctors Lake and Black Creek just south of their are good spots also.
Man I need a boat lol
Yeah man I dunno about a boat, maybe a friend with a boat lol. Boats are too much work and money for me. But I would like on to do inshore and crabbing.
I was about to go fishing and then my girlfriends water broke!!!
I am at the hospital waiting for my son to be born!! I can not explain the excitement
Congrats man, that's awesome!
I went out fishing in the rain and the fish were on. Jigs, cranks, worms, they were smashing everything. The pond is well over the banks though and it might flood.

Good to hear I was going to give it a go tomorrow rain or shine
I stayed out until it started raining so hard I could barely see lol. The fish were very very active and were literally right up on the edge, caught some in less than a foot of water. Make sure to look for any flowing water into the pond like drain pipes etc.. Caught a few hanging around those as well.

Good call Jax Basser!
Fished my usual spot at Publix, from 6 am to 7 am overcast with off and on light to moderate rain, got 3 strikes and misses, one break off, and landed this one, all on Junebug red flake 4.5" Rattlesnake near a culvert, a deeper flat in a cove next to main pond about 4-5 feet of water.
Same fish different pic.
Nice, that's a fat fish!
I caught my biggest fish of the year so far right when the last tropical storm came through, it really gets them going. I can't wait to get off work and fish.

It was pretty thick lol I think the rain has been good to him
Yep same here day before that last storm I got that big one, biggest so far.
As soon as I get another break in the rain I'm gonna head out again. Hopefully I get a big one.
Did well even though the pond has overflowed into the streets. Caught some nice bass and even my first crappie.
Awesome man, nice bass...that is funny you got a crappie, thought they liked big deep water......... Hopefully bite is still on I am gonna try out the pond that was on last Friday before the storm.
Nice catches Jax and MCS. Looks like the rain is going to do us good here in Jacksonville and it is Suppose to be nice the rest of the week starting Thursday.
I've been at the hospital with my girlfriend the past 2 days my first child my son Adrian was born on 6/26/2012 at 8:53am... By far my best catch! I will finally be able to get some fishing in this week when the baby is napping.
Jax I was going to check out the lakes you gave the coordinates to on Monday. I plugged them in and went to check them out because I was at the Town Center at Babies R Us ironically. Then we get home and I was preparing to go out and the. My girls water broke. So I will have to Fish them in the next couple weeks. Right now I am just going to have to stay in my backyard pond so I can help my girl out with the baby if needed.
And MCS that was a fatty man!!! I can't believe thT is in the publix pond. Were you in that cove that is by the steakhouse I think? We can bring the baby home on Thursday so I am bringing my rod with me when I run home tonight and I am going to the publix pond an some of the ones by citi bank since I am right here. And how much did that fish weigh do you know? Nice catch man now I have faith in the publix spot because I never caught anything the couple times I went.
Congrats man, glad everything went well with the baby!
Cove by bono's it is the second one about that big that has come out of there. Oh they are in there you just gotta work sometimes all I get is the little ones. But i got about a 2 pounder out same spot on friday. But this is like my tenth time fishing it lol I would guess about 3 pounds it wasn't as big or heavy as my avatar. It was short n fat lol
5" senko style weightless n u should be good to go
I would love to get out there in a Jon boat or canoe n fish the deep water

You said that you use 4.5" rattle snake what brand do you use? And where do you get them?
I was looking into buying a cheap Jon boat that I can throw into my lake. I've been looking on Craig's list.

Grande Bass....Junebug red flake or Trophy Hunter colors is what I use. you can buy it at their website, I use another that gets all blocked out when you type it here like the word night LOL. but you gotta order them online. I am almost out, 3 more left. They work similar to a senko, but they are 2 bucks a pack cheaper, and super easy to rig weedless due to the ribs they have. Oh and they are scented, smell like garlic. I think they probably have a little more natural wiggle than a senko. If you check out the thread "decent Jax bass" you can see it in the pic next to the fish and the rod. Jax Basser will back me up on it, Junebug is the way to go, Red Shad they say is a FL color and it is pretty good but Junebug all the bigger have been snagged on
maybe once I get my own house I will think about a jon boat, but right now in a town home you cannot store ****. LOL

I am not sure where u live but the publix is on batrum parkway in a big shopping plaza. There is a resturant called bono's and if you park in their lot you can get to the pond. And it is easy enough to put a kayak in so you wouldn't have a problem doing that.
One day when you get back we need to fish man and you can show me some of your spots off of bay meadows
I need to get over there and fish some of these spots with ya'll.
And I'll agree with MCS, junebug is pretty much the best color for anything in Florida. I fish others like watermelon and pumpkin colors but junebug is great.
I am gonna go pick up some junebug color plastics tomorrow on my way home from the hospital.
Before I went home to get some things for my girl I was talking to a staff member here at Baptist South Hospital and he fishes. He said the pond on the emergency room side of the hospital holds some massive bass. So I went and picked up some things for my girl put the car seat in my car and of course had to throw my travel rod and my tackle box in my trunk. Since I have been up early as hell with my girl and my baby I figured I'd hit up that pond at around 5:30am and see if I can get anything.

I never got a chance to come out there I fell asleep. I was up with my girl until about 5:20am then I put my head down for a second and next thing I know it is 12:30 and time to leave the hospital
MCS did you end up catching anything this morning?
My girlfriends mother came up for the birth of her first grandson so I am going to take her fishing in my backyard and hopefully she can catch a big one, she loves to fish

No worries man I ended up walking my dog longer and hit a spot close to the house.
3 all under 10" had to leave as they started biting
I was Fishing my pond today really for the first time since the birth of my son. I was out there for a good hour and a half. They are building a house across the lake and when I first got out there I heard one of the construction workers say I bet he doesn't catch any fish in here. Then about 30 mins later they ask me if I do I tell em yea and they are big.
Then about 15 mins later I get a huge strike and pull out a 4.10#. They all were like d**n i guess they do got big ones in here. 2 of em said they are bringing their gear on monday ( my spot has been exposed lol). It Put up a hell of a fight and jumped out once full body out of the water tail and all. I will upload the picture when I get to my computer.
4.10#
I caught 2 others one was 2.2# and the other was 2.5#
I finally got a monster man!! Havent caught anything since the 30th but this one was well worth the wait.
I was using a 5" red shad senko weightless.
I will post the pic when I get to my computer
This MONSTER is the first fish I caught since June 30th.....
This monster was probably about 7" and attacked my 5" senko with tremendous force. It felt like I had weeds on the end of my line I had no idea it was a fish until the little guy jumped lol.
But I waited 8 days to catch this beast!! First one to end my drought.
Yea the bite hasnt been very good lately. i wanna say it was the july 3rd was when i went out to a pond last and i caught 6 small ones less than 12 inches but the big boys are hidin! I also made a trip down to rodman reservoir in palatka on sunday with a buddy in his boat and didnt get one bight all day.. and rodman is known for its giant bass and good fishing but the water was way up since last time i went... I hit it back in april and caught about 14 in two days and got in a nice 6 lber. Guess since the waters way up and its so hot its gonna be some rough fishin for awhile!

What's up guys. I am down in southern Duval/St. Johns. There are a couple threads with a few spots posted already. Check out the shopping center on the right as you come up to beaches on hodges. two ponds in the back look good. Use google earth it is a helpful tool, you can also rewind the time and see how long the pond has been there. Also the mullet run is about be on, give redfish/trout a try check out the little jetties or huegonot, villano inlet, guana park. If you have bass gear, you got what you need to snag one of those.

YOU SUCK! AND I HATE YOU!
LOL J/K!
I have a crappy little canal behind my house... if I knew I would get back into fishing like this I would have bought the same darn house across the street for extra $5K and been on a much larger canal!!! d**n that's nice fish man!

There's one in the back pond in the abandoned housing development on bartram park on the right coming from race track

Which one? I fished the one towards Old St. Aug. it is really weedy, then the other two, one closest never got anything and the one at the far end towards Racetrack my buddy only got bluegill. But the one I am curious about is the one in the woods, between that construction site and the apartments. I have seen people drive trucks up there, but I have also seen police chasing people away. But that one in the woods looks like it might hold a gator and a bunch of fish and turtles. Message me sometime and we can further discuss.
kinda an introduction and kinda questioning...Hi, im also new to the area and am gona be here for 5years+ so my goal is a 13#+ bass and so far ive made a pretty detailed list of where to fish and what produces! That being said id like to get out on some hot spots you guys might have some time? I dont believe in secret spots or ponds and
...here comes the zinger...private property crazyness! I'll ask permission when i can but fishing is fishing and i never keep freshwater fish! VERY environmentally conscious so fishing the backside of a lake or trecking through unknown woods is A.OK in my book (includes golf courses).
Anywho, if anyone would like to start hunting lunkers around jax or just share some tips and knowledge hit me up!
