What's going on in NoVA? =D 2024

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

What's everyone been up to? I haven't been out in awhile and the last bass I caught was at Meeeercer at the beginning of November.  I've been itchin to get out and fish and was thinking of doing some fishing this weekend. I'm not sure where to go and I'd rather not fish alone. Who's free? I was just thinking of doing some shore fishing but am open to suggestions.

Happy Holidays! :)

fishing user avatardrmnbig reply :

I'm not in NoVa but I've had the itch to get out too.  The water temps are so cold over here in the valley it's nearly impossible to get a bite.

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

Yeah, I'm not expecting to catch much. Just want to wet a line. Was thinking of throwing drop shots, suspending jerk baits, and maybe some road runners for panfish. Maybe I should try and find some trout water....

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

Thanks Allyn, but that's all the way in February!!! Must.fish.now.

fishing user avatarslomoe reply :

ROFL I feel ya.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

well I was going to suggest Lake Thompson if you wanted to try for some trout, but apparently the spillway drainage sprung a leak and the place is completely dry....

fishing user avatarTrevor in Burke reply :

I went out last Friday after thanksgiving and landed a real nice fish on a swimbait about 15 ft+ down on casting out from some riprap, my guess was right around 5 lbs, only bite i had. I got some random guy to take a pic. The following day I met with Rob, Drums and Dan and we all got skunked, trying multiple techniques.

fishing user avatarPigsticker reply :

Wow nice Trevor!

Nothing much going on with me either. Day before Thanksgiving I caught a solid 3.5 lb fish at Fairview, t-rigging. Other than that nothing, fished last sunday and yesterday and haven't got another bite.

It's only gonna get tougher in the upcoming months.

Matt Strykul is whipped and can't fish a Gaston team tournament on dec. 21st so I am probably gonna have to fish it for him, with his brother ;D

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

are there no fishing signs at Fairview? That's like 7 minutes up Lee Highway from me when I'm home.

fishing user avatarPigsticker reply :

Yeah but there is a private side and a public side. I think the public side really is just the restaurant not caring who fishes that side, never had any problems on that side.

7 minutes? Same with me but that is the curse of Fairview. So close you have to fish it but the quality of fish is weak. ;D

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

I might have to give it a shot. I drive by it all the time but I never thought it was fishable.

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

you guys should be looking at Burke if you have access to a boat.  brushpiles are begging for jigs.  some of my best days at Burke have come in the first week of December.  Huntsman?????  been catching about 25 crappie in 2 hrs of fishing and the occasional bass.  been to magical lake x twice,  no huge fish but 20 bass each day with a 4 each time.  might get out there on Sat.!!!!!!!  Trevor, why not LB with the jb or jig?????  check out 4 mile run at the rt1 bridge, thats always a good bet when it gets really cold.  just remember slow and steady wins the race!!!

Thanks for the info Jon! ;D

I was actually thinking of hitting up Huntsman with my kayak. Any pointers? PM if you don't mind sharing some info :)

I work near rt.1 and four mile run! I always thought that water was way too polutted and my line would melt if i tried to fish it. Might have to give it a try.

Was your success at Burke at night or during the day too?

Thanks again for all the input. I greatly appreciate it!

fishing user avatarTrevor in Burke reply :

Well I just got a new rod (Kistler magnesium 7' Heavy) and the purpose of the outing was to use it and decide how i liked it. Turns out I love it, it's perfect for carolina rigs, texas rigs, jigs and swimbaits.  I threw all of the above and the swimbait is what did the trick.  I let it sink all the way to the bottom of the 27ft and reeled it back SLOW and all the sudden the line was heavy.  First cast too, which in turn led to no more bites.

Eh Manassas is a bit of a run for me. I am getting a float tube for next year but would not want to use it in the winter time ;)

What do you get at the rt 1 bridge?

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

mostly bass.   Alexandria watertreatment is right there and the discharge is a warm water deal.  it can get a bit crowded on the week-ends.  check out the tide chart for National airport and go on the last couple hours of an outgoing tide, and watch out for snags if your gonna chuck multi hook baits.  small grubs and worms seem to work well.  i've caught 'um on a jb and rattle trap in there but you gotta be careful.

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

Andrew, tried to pm you and it said i was banned from the forum so here goes........Huntsman.......dam riprap with the jb and the drain for the crappie.  Burke is not a night deal in the winter, occasionally at night in the summer.  any warm water in the winter on the river is a bass magnet!!  i mean i'm not eatin' 'um so why not teach 'um a lesson!!!!

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

Haven't had too much luck with the LMB recently, hit up a private lake in Richmond and been catching some dinks on slow rolled spinnerbaits.  This lake has pike or musky, something toothy, and these guys usually hit my spinnerbaits too, but haven't caught one larger than 1lb.

Bring the yak down for some striper =D

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

I've fished fairvew with pigsticker recently but it was after school for like an hour. Nothing, no bites, no fish. Other than that, I haven't been fishing too much. That's gonna change though.

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

I think i'm going to shoot for the hunts saturday morning. I'm going to stick with shore fishing. let me know if you're interested!

fishing user avatarPaul Naj reply :

Greetings gents, it's been a while. I haven't fished for LMB since September. Work has a real way of interfering with fishing sometimes.

I'm actually heading up to Long Island to do some wreck fishing for blackfish tomorrow.

I still may try and squeeze one more day out on the kayak before I put it up for the season.

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

Paul, let me know when you're going out. If my schedule cooperates i'd like to get out on the kayak again too.

Scratch that, I'm going to fish Mercer. Be there at 7am if anyone is interested in joinin me. Still no cell phone so PM me if interested

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

grats on the zillion =D and good luck!

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

mercer.........wha?.......... why not try something a bit different??  i'm gonna be at Burke with a buddy of mine, why not give the brush piles a try Andrew???  has mercer got some kind of spell of minimal success on you???? have you gotten onto any of the pickeral out there? a few years ago, I know someone caught a 10 from mercer.  the only problem with mercer is that the forage is sooooooooo plentiful that you have to be a magician to have a great day.  very good crappie in there as well.  good luck.

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

I wanted to try something new but wanted someone to go with me to give me some help  :( I figured since I know where the pockets are at mercer I might have a better chance there.  I also marked a few really nice schools of fish there the last time I was out and was hoping they'd be in the same area.  I don't plan on fishing long either. Good luck at Burke!

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

Hey Jon, you been catchin em' out there at burke lately? We are thinking about getting out there but we don't know where these brushpiles are!

Now that was a tough outing.......Andrew, Steez is nice. I'm jealous.....If it was a righty, I would have stole it from you. ;D

I'm gonna give it another shot this morning around 10, not sure where.....But if there is no ice, you know I'm game.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

andrew you got a steez?!? what rod do you have it on?

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

6'6" zillion in the mail...first one came broke.  Hopefully they go well together. I wanted to get a st. croix xtreme but I hate recoil guides. Darn impulse buys!

Definitely tough outting: line freezing up on spool, icing on guides, and worst of all a skunk for me! Rob caught one though :-/

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

dude, those zillion rods are freakin' sweet. I'm so jealous. That reel on that rod is going to look killer.

I know what you mean about the recoil guides, though. I think they used them on the Extremes because they want them to be ultra lightweight.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

Yeah the Zillions look like amazing rods. I asked for one for Christmas so we'll see if it comes through. How do you like it Andrew? I asked for the 7' xh for flipping/carolina rig.

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

Haven't had a chance to try it with my reel yet since the first one came with a broken tip. Once the rod gets here from Daiwa I'll let you know, but playing with the broken one, I think i'm going to really like it. I got a MHF and plan on using it as my do all shore fishing rod.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

That's too bad it came broken. That is going to be a sick combo, steez/zillion. Can't wait to hear a review.

Pigsticker and I are heading out to fairview to see if anything will bite. We'll report back. Hope my dropshot doesn't freeze down there. ::)

fishing user avatarptomacbass reply :

I'm getting the zillion flipping stick for christmas.  I asked my dad for it and later that night i saw him on the computer, when I walked by, he covered the screen and swithched windows.  a week later there was a big rod tube on our door step.

About nova, i've been fishing southern Maryland with pretty much nothing.

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

well i didn't whak any hugh fish at Burke but i did manage 6 keepers in the 2-3 lb range.  only found 1 spot they woud bite.  5 on shakey 1 on a drop shot.  i probably missed as many as i caught!!  i too was daeling with a lot of freezing so i really concentrated on the spinng gear.  when they bit it was mostly a spongy deal with the only indication a increasing feeling of weight on the other end.  the spot i was fishing was a bit new to me.  i saw John and Jason Dillinger fishing it in the morning and as the moved on i decided to give it a shot.  i knew of the spot but had no idea of the magnatude of debris on the spot and the depth around it,  absoutly amazing, possibly my new favorite spot!!  some of the other brush piles are very quickly being silted in and rapidly breaking down, ashame, they really hold fish well in the winter.  might be going out again next week-end!!

sorrry to hear you got skunkd a Mercer Andrew.  Matt i'll be more than happy to show you the piles that i am aware of.  lemmie know

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

Sounds like you had a good day! That'd be sweet if you could show me these brush piles. You have someone fishing in the backseat of your boat next weekend? If not let me know. I can probably get out there in my boat otherwise. I really need to get working on getting to tow my boat!!!

Unfortunately I can only fish on Sunday because I work from 1:00-6:00 on Saturday and I can't take off because business should really be picking up soon at the UPS store ;D.

fishing user avatarflippin4it. reply :

I'll fish Burke on Sunday........ I would like to drag a jig around with my new LTX and 50MG combo.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

Wow that sounds like an amazing combo Rob. Hope to see you out there on Sunday if I make it.

Hey Jon, when do you think the Fountainhead tournament schedule will be out?

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

I'm itchin' to buy a 51MG! or maybe a steez after Andrew says he was to toss his STX out

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

not sure about the Fountainhead schedule as Mikey has quite a bit on his plate with the baby due right around the time we hold the first tx.  about Burke next week-end, i'll let you know if im gonna get out there.  we also have to consider the weather for the week as it's gonna get cold by the end of the week.  hope it doesn't freeze!!!  if you can Matt, find a copy of a map of Burke and i will mark some of the piles that i know of.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

Alright sounds great! Just let me know.

Sent you a PM about the map.

fishing user avatarslomoe reply :

Well, I froze my butt off on saturday at a local pond. Threw a jig and shakey head around for about an hour with no bites. I was flicking the ice out of my guides every ten minutes, but besides that it was nice to get out.

fishing user avatarVekol reply :

Haven't been bass fishing since October. Too busy trying to shoot animals. I bought a couple of Silver Buddy lures a couple of months ago that have not seen water yet--and they'll have to wait until I get 50 degree day when I don't have to work. Now the only question is where to try them at.

fishing user avatarVABasser reply :

I hear you about not fishing since Oct Vekol, except I've been busy with college :-/. In fact I should be studying for finals at the moment but thats not going so well. I want to get out over Xmas break, it sounds pretty hit and miss though. For some of you that fish the Potomac in the winter, what areas are you looking for and are the Silver Buddies as necessary for success as they sound?

fishing user avatarVekol reply :

As you might have gathered, I'm not much of a cold weather fisherman. Most times I've tried it, I've had fairly meager results. I asked some guys who claimed to have done it successfully, and they recommended the Silver Buddy lure. Well, I've heard that jigging spoons were the way to go from other sources as well.

As for where, try the Occoquan river. It has some deep water holes where the fish concentrate--and the key to successful spoon fishing is finding large concentrations. Or you can try waiting for a warm spell and fishing shallow cover on the northern banks of a river or lake. I have had some success doing that in the winter. Slow roll spinnerbaits in and around laydowns. Drop shot rigs work well too.

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

Matt, got your pm but for some reason it says that i'm banned from the forum...........weird..........didn't think i ticked anyone off. anyway, i have a map that i found that has a bunch of info on it, once again, if i can find it i'll make you a copy!!Saturday is my day this week-end to fish so i'm gonna be back at Burke to give it another go. caught a 2 3/4 lber at Lake Braddock this afternoon on a jb ghost minnow 78, very surprising because of the receint cold. i'll give you a call if my plans change and i'm able to get out Sunday.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

Okay Jon, sounds good to me. I believe you're banning was probably a mistake by the forums. Try to contact one of the moderators and they'll help you out.

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

Mind if the yaker's come along? Simon and I are thinkin of hitting up Burke to see if we can learn a thing or two and hopefully catch some fish.

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

Ya, ya guys mind if we tag along? burke has always been pretty much a skunk-hole for me ><

learning a thing or 2 would be nice!

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

how polite!!!! you guys will never need my permission to fish the same place as i am ever.  i always say the more the merrier.  i'm gonna launch from the second entrance at about 7:30-8:00.  i'll be more than happy to show you guys a bunch of places.  Andrew, you got a graph right??? just look for the drop-offs and deeper shorelines and pay close attention to the graph.  if you come accross a large amount of bait or fish in general on the graph, mentally note where you went over them and make some casts.  a lot of these fish are really ganged up in certain spots.  if you mark them you can usually catch a couple.

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

Awesome, we'll probably be out there around the same time. I'm still gettin used to reading charts so this trip will be beneficial regardless if fish are caught.

I hope our kayak drive systems don't freeeze :o.

ah shucks, I was planning on wearing board shorts and going for a dip ::)

::knockonwood::

Simon bring that box! I might need some.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

How'd it go yesterday at Burke?

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

It was tough, cold, windy, and, did I mention tough? Simon and I got skunked and not sure how Jon did after we left.

The wind kept blowing me around and it was hard to position myself anywhere. I did learn a lot from Jon though and appreciate the knowledge he shared with us. Hopefully, my next outting on Burke will produce fish.

Aside from Simon, Jon, and I there was one other boat on the water.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

That's too bad, it was REALLY cold Saturday. I'm heading down to Gaston this weekend for a tournament if I don't end up going to NY with my girlfriend, but I'll let you know how I do.

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

1 very small bass(8 in) on a drop shot and a bunch of short strikes.  nice to have met Andrew and Simon, wish the results could have been a bit more rewarding!!supposed to be warmer all week, maybe another shot this week-end, if I don't go to lake x.
