**** RICHMOND FISHING EXPO **** 2024

fishing user avatarMicro reply :

We are about a month away.

http://www.ncboatshows.com/show.php/eventId/3

I'm hoping Burley shows (if he's still alive) 'cuz I never got that stink-palm he promised me last year.

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

funny bc i was just thinking about the expo...hopefully more vendors come this year! I really liked Dave's Tournament Tackle stand last year being able to customize jigs or spinnerbaits to your liking!

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

it would be the weekend after i come back to school to.  Figures.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Looking forward to the Expo this year.

Since our bass club left FLW and went with B.A.S.S. we do not have to work the event so we can now visit the Expo as we wish and not have to work it.  ;D

fishing user avatars13john reply :

so whats the date that all the BR people are gunna go, getting close now.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

No idea.

Any suggestions?????  :)

fishing user avatarintheweeds reply :

I will be there on Saturday, it is the only day I can go. I will be there with a couple of other BR members. Anyone else going on Saturday? It would be great to meet some of you.

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

i dont have a set day just gonna hit it up when i get free time that weekend....maybe see a few of you guys around!  8-)

fishing user avatarBASSclary reply :

I will most likely be there late Saturday, or early Sunday.

Edit: Im confused though. In this thread http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1276737040/5

The dates are at the end of the month, not earlier.

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

Here is the correct dates:

January 21-23, 2011 @ Meadow Event Park

Fairgrounds of Virginia

fishing user avatarChaz Hickcox reply :

I plan on being there Saturday.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

The Richmond Times-Dispatch article on Friday, January 14 by Andy Thompson regarding this year's Expo states that Green Top will have a 1400 square foot area with 25 company reps showing off their new gear.

Shimano, Abu Garcia, Daiwa, and Lowrance will be at the Green Top booth.

I hope Hummingbird has a presence as I am not happy with Lowrance products and are thinking of replacing my two sonar/GPS units with another brand this year.

Hopefully, with the show in a new building, it will be better than the old RIR warehouses.

I plan to go on Friday afternoon either from Richmond or coming back from Maryland, depending what hits the fan at work next week.

I will wear my LSU sweat shirt, as usual, so stop and say "hi" if you see a crazy Coonass walking around.  ;)

fishing user avatarintheweeds reply :

Sam, or anyone, do you know if the expo is indoors or outside? I know that some of it is in a building. How much of it is outside? Thanks

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

I'll be there Saturday.

It should be completely indoors.

fishing user avatarBigbarge50 reply :

I have to work Friday, Saturday, and just early Sunday morning.

Looks like I will be down on Sunday.... I really wanted to watch the tank demo about swimbaits too, but Sunday seems to offer everything else.

Any demo's, speakers, or exhibitors you guys are really looking forward to specifically?

fishing user avatarSam reply :

100% indoors.  ;)

fishing user avatarintheweeds reply :

Thanks for the info guys. @ Bigbarge50, I am want to listen to Denny Brauer talk about jig fishing. I am sure there will be a lot of things I want to see, hear and BUY when I get there. ;D

fishing user avatarSam reply :

From www.wxrisk.com

This guy usually hits the nail on the head.

Here is what he is saying about the first two days of the Expo. Let's hope it is just rain or it misses us completely:

If the European model is correct it would be a major winter storm.  bringing possibly significant ice into Northern Georgia northwest  SC much of NC  and   snow  over  much  of  VA into  MD  southern WVA  DE and possibly into southern  PA and  southern NJ.   The 0z   SATURDAY EURO continues to show this event  for JAN   21-22.  :'(

Sam, I saw that you talked about this guy a couple of week ago on another post so I went and check out his site. I love it. DT is very informative and usually right on the money. Thanks for sharing.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Weeds, he is good but he gets too full of himself and sometimes he gets carried away with the details.

Overall, he gives us a heads up to the weather before the local news does.

Hope we can still go to the Expo.  :)

I sure hope we can do the Expo too. I see what you mean about DT. I went to his FB page and he was calling people names and banning them from his site, it was pretty entertaining. ;D

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Bummer. Hope the storm holds off until the 23rd.

From wxrisk.com, the guy who seem to be ahead of the weather curve:

ALERT SUNDAY MORNING UPDATE *** for JAN 21-22... not Jan 18!! 0z Euro shows SIGNIFICANT Low coming out of GA into eastern SC and NC while cold arctic HIGH over is over Montreal.. Model shows SIGNIFICNT SNOW over Northern NC & southern Half of VA.... this is strongly supported by Euro Ensembles

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Update from Dave at wxrisk.com regarding next weekend's forecast.

Hope the system misses us:

*** ALERT ANOTHER MAJOR EAST COAST WINTER IS LIKELY as 12Z EUROPEAN model HAMMERS the east coast with HEAVY ice and snow from SC to MAINE JAN 22-23 **

fishing user avatarBASSclary reply :

I'll be the one who keeps talking, and selling the salesmen for free products.

I'll probably wear a name tag too just for fun.

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

ill be there saturday and sunday.  hoping to find a good deal on a shimano crucial.

fishing user avatarBASSclary reply :

This'll be my first time going, and I plan on staying from open to close on saturday, are there some things i'd be stupid not to bring? Other than Pen and paper for notes and autographs, money for tackle, what else would be advisable? I'll be bringing my camera too so I can get a few shots of the pros fishing in the big tank.

And carrington, if your ever in the Stafford area, and havent fished a crucial, i'll let you fish mine for a bit... Atleast when the ice thaws  ::)

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Bring a plastic bag to carry stuff that you will pick up.

I will bring a shopping bag with me.

You can bring a plastic grocery bag but bring something to carry stuff in.

Visit the DG&IF to try to get a free poster of common fish of Virginia or the crawfish poster. Plus pick up their freebies.

As for photos, YES!!! Bring that camera. Look for Denny and Woo and get your photos taken with them. Both are very nice guys.

May I suggest walking around first and then taking a second pass to pick up those items you want at the best price you can get.

Look out for the Bait Monkey. He is lurking around the Expo just looking for you.  :D

P.S. Don't forget that Green Top is having a sale that weekend so head to Green Top on Route 1 off exit 86 at Elkmont.

fishing user avatartyped by ben reply :

so excited... i noticed the other day that it was still light at 5:45... that only means one thing: the days are getting longer!

in the eyes of the eternal optimist, december 24th is the real first day of spring  ;D

fishing user avatarBASSclary reply :

So the only other expo i've been to is the Dulles fishing expo with my grandpa, and I swear from one seminar I walked away with 2 spools of different size mono, lure spray/scent , a pack of hooks and a hat.

Do they love to give out alot of free stuff too at the Richmond expo? If so, I may just bring a drawstring backpack.

fishing user avatarMorelures reply :

Im looking forward to this, and I feel bad leaving them home so the bait monkeys will be coming with me to buy "morelures!" Will Daves tourtament tackle be there this year? If so I will be getting custom jigs made, great staff and great products!

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

Im sure Dave's will be there! as far as freebie stuff i really didnt see much of that going on last year.

be sure to stop by the greentop stand as they will have some good prices im sure! 8-)

i dont know where stafford is and usually im in richmond or blacksburg.  richmond when im home and blacksburg when im at school.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Weather is getting better for the weekend. Up to 2-inches of snow mixed with rain so the weather is not going to be a problem.

Carrington, get a map of Virginia and find Stafford.

Leave Richmond and head north on I-95. Stafford is at exit 140.

Carrington needs to tour the state to learn about these places we talk about and live.

There is a world outside of Blacksburg!!!!  ;D   ;D   ;D

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Morelures, check out the web site and the Vendors.

Dave's Tackle is going to be there.

I might have to do Friday now post work..... which is not ideal, but mid-day Sunday is not ideal either, especially with football on too.

Anyone going to be willing to trade notes and or comments on some of these tank demo's?

BassClary I sent you a PM.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Carrington.....3:36AM?

Are you up studying????

Be sure to bring lots of money to the Expo and meet the vendors, guides and speakers.

Get your photo taken with Woo and Brauer.

Speak with Woo on fishing your Virginia local waters. Woo is an expert for tidal rivers and local lakes.  ;)

fishing user avatarintheweeds reply :

I see a few of you are going on Saturday. Should we pick a meeting place so we can say hi? How about 1:00 with Woo Daves or 3:00 with Denny Brauer? I will be wearing a blue St. Croix seatshirt and a Reel American Heroes Foundation hat.

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

sam, i do my best work late at night, 3:36 is early in my book.

fishing user avatarMorelures reply :

Did anyone go today? If so how was it?

fishing user avatarSam reply :

I went and had a great time.

Saw a lot of old friends and met Denny Brauer. Spoke with Denn for about 5 minutes. Really a super nice guy.

Picked up some Robo worms and posters.

Spoke with guy I know at VG&IF; the Kerr Corps people about the virus; Teddy Carr; George of GMCO; Lonnie of Castaways; Tim Mick and Mike at the Reel Kids Casting event; Shenandoah Valley Tackle which has a great display; the Diawa representative; Mrs. Woo Daves; and got some very interesting information from Teddy Carr and a great guy at Wayne Olson's booth regarding the down and side imaging units.

Good lighting; great parking; nice setup.

Everyone have fun!  :)

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

i went...seemed smaller then lastyear and less tackle  :( i had better time at greentop  ;)! Denny was cool to listen to though...have fun all!

fishing user avatarBigbarge50 reply :

I also went tonight, expected a lot more in terms of vendors, but was very happy with it.

Denny was awesome.... I was the guy who got in a few minutes late (darn DC traffic) but took 3 pages of notes.... his discussion about temperature and presentation specifics was really good I thought.  Was specific about colors too.

I did do some damage to the wallet.  New Daiwa reel at a very very good price from greentop.  Topo map of the occoquan res. was an awesome pick up for me, maybe the best pick up of the night.  The rest was some zoom flukes and worms on the cheap, Some jigs Denny talked about and the trailers he talked about for sub 55 degree water, This really cool jig that looks just like a bluegill and flutters on it's side on the decent ( from Susquehanna ) as well as some other stuff from them too.

Only caught the last two speakers, so might go back on sunday work permitting.  I was hoping for a little more variety in terms vendors (they had all had very similar stuff but greentop and Susquehanna were way ahead of the rest, though if you love zoom like me, then jack's bait was great) and i really was hoping for more in terms of boating stuff, not just boats.  Was hoping to see some more stuff like seats, anchors, ...ect.

How was the "location location, location" talk, the potamac talk, and woo daves?

Woo was awesome, but his stand was pretty weak.  He was still selling vhs tapes ...... tapes.  Might have gone for a dvd, but not quite ready to bust out the old vcr.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Bigbarge, if you are looking for more boating items then the Boat Show coming to Richmond in the near future is where you want to go.

The boat show is loaded with saltwater boats, boating supplies and equipment.

Google Richmond Virginia Boat Shows to find out more information.  ;)

fishing user avatarBASSclary reply :

Well I didn't get to go  :-[

Was it really awesome?, or kinda nubs.

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

I went to day to the Expo, I liked it.  I thought it was a much better lay out then last year and better facility.  I didnt get to listen to any of the lectures.  But, I looked at some new reels.  That Curado E50 (6.4 to 1) is AWESOME!   I was thinking about selling my year old Revo Premier (well, two year old, one fishing season on her) to get the new Curado, but doubt it.

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

I went today and had the pleasure of spending about 45 minutes with Denny in addition to attending his seminar. The information he provided was great and I learned a lot. He was also nice enough to sign 4 hats for the Reel American Heroes Foundation. We are selling these hats (3 Rage Tail and 1 RAHF) on our Facebook site. I also had a good time checking out all of the vendors that were there.

I also purchased a Abu Garcia Revo SX and a JB Custom Rods "Snake". This combo will be raffled off at our event at Bolling Air Force Base in May.

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

i went and picked up 2 new rods that ive been wanting to get for a while.

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

Did anyone see anything new or exciting?  I saw a couple of deals that if I had more $$ I would have done.  But, nothing new coming out for bass fishing.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Carrington, tells us about your two new Ugly Sticks.

Woody Crankbait, did you see the Jackall, Neko and Roboworms?????

Did you speak with the Green Top people about the new side imaging units?

Did you visit the booth with the new swimbaits?

Did you see the Daiwa rep and discuss his rods and reels?

Did you pick up anything from the DG&IF booth and speak with those guys?

Did you see Woo and Mrs. Woo and their booth and talk to Woo about fishing local waters?

What about Teddy Carr? Great guy who has forgotten more about fishing Virginia waters than most guys know.

And did you look at George's new GMCO maps and posters????

Susquehanna Tackle had some new items. They are great guys and if you really need something from Japan that you cannot find at Fishing Pro Tech or Green Top, Susquehanna will ship it to you overnight if they have it in stock. And they have some fantastic products in stock!

Lots of new stuff. You had to search for it, but it was there.

Next year we will go together and I will introduce you to these people.

See you Wednesday night around 7 PM and I have a few good DVDs for you to watch. One especially for you on fishing a Senko!!!!!!!!!!  ;D   ;D   ;D

fishing user avatarWdyCrankbait reply :

Yes, I saw the roboworms, but still have to use them so, I jsut shrugged my shoulders and walked away.  YEp, I saw Woo, did not speak with him, he was headed somewhere.  Yes, spoke with VDGIF, but it was about trout fishing in the Jackson River.  Yes, spoke with the Diawa rep, but you know I am a Shimano man.  Also, I saw the other boothes you mentioned ealier, maybe I should have gone with you instead of my dad and uncle (who does not fish).   :-/

btw, I believe they sell those topo maps at the Fountainhead bait stand.

fishing user avatarBASSclary reply :

How good were the rod and reel deals?

fishing user avatarBigbarge50 reply :

I got a trillionaire diawa for $60 from the diawa rep at greentop.  Normally $100 bucks.

In terms of new.... I got this jig from Susquehanna...not so sure how "new" it is, might be over a year or so old.

http://sfttackle.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_ID=1055&ParentCat=18

Looks real promising though.

fishing user avatarChaz Hickcox reply :

Yeah I picked up one too.  It looks to interesting to pass by.  I first saw em on *** back in Oct, but from the picture I couldn't tell the size and was a little skittish about them.  After seeing them in person I like the compactness of them.  Future skipping docks lure I think.

fishing user avatarBigbarge50 reply :

BTW anybody fish the trillionaire?  I read a bunch on it after the fact and heard mixed reviews..... but it seemed to be mostly negatives from "reel snobs" (you know, if it is not $500 dollars it is not that good of a reel)

The main complaint I heard was it was "heavy" but felt real light to me with a small profile.  Never really ever worried or thought about the weight of a reel..... in my 30's I am still strong enough somehow to hold up a big heavy reel somehow..haha.

I did a search on the forums and everyone compared it to the older black widows.  It has 12 total bearings in it (which is a ton to me) and was as smooth as can be.  The diawa rep really talked to me a ton about it, (needless to say he had all good things to say about it) but the deal was great and I liked it so I went for it.  It is a diawa, it has to be pretty darn good right?

Anyone else have some stories or feedback on the expo (besides my questioning of the trillionaire).

fishing user avatarintheweeds reply :

I had a blast at the expo. Denny's seminar was great. I picked up a new JB custom rod also. I can't wait for Spring so I can try it. I wish I had enough money to have bought a reel for the rod also. I checked out a type of kayak called the NU Canoe. Looks really cool, I may have to pick one up. I thought the expo was great and I will go back next year.

Sorry weeds, but this just in  Spring is not coming until June.  It is snowing here in Richmond, again!  Ugh, stupid winter needs to go away!

fishing user avatarintheweeds reply :

Yep, we are buried with snow here in Herndon. feels like I will never fish again! :'(

fishing user avatarSam reply :

We need the water.

We need the water in the western part of the state to flow into the eastern part of the state.

Snow is good for supplying the water.

Good fishing this spring is on the way!  :)

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

come on up to SML and ill take you out, all i need to do is break in my new lower unit then im good to go.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Thanks, but no thanks.

SML is too far away with gasoline pricing at $3.00 a gallon.

You have fun on SML and let us know how you do.  :)

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

When i come home for the summer we can hit chesdin then if you want, been looking to learn that lake and find some good ledges to work on my carolina rigging.

fishing user avatarBigbarge50 reply :

DC and Arlington = Hammered by snow

On a more positive note..... when do you think the first day you will be hitting the water.... baring any major late storms?

Or for example, when did you hit the water first last year?  Will be my first spring fishing here.... and chomping at the bit so curious if we are talking like early march or later than that......

I first hit the water about a week ago on the Potomac. I was lucky it wasn't frozen! ;D

I left when I couldn't tie a knot anymore it was so cold. Which is basically about 45 minutes!
