2013 Richmond Fishing Expo 2024

fishing user avatarSam reply :

January 25th through the 27th.

Want to set up a Meet and Greet at the event for Friday or Saturday?

http://www.ncboatshows.com/show.php/eventId/3

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

I'll be there all three days - stop by and see me. I'll be at the Appomattox River Company booth in the back and will be onsite with my Hobie Revolution 13 fully rigged. I'd love to chat with some of you and put a face to the BR avatar :)

fishing user avatarsoccplayer07 reply :

sounds good to me!

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

If anyone is interested in the invention that Robbie Patterson has to greatly lessen the effort to stow and deploy a bow Motor Guide, he will be there with some of those to sell and he will install it for you if you bring in your mount.

I got that kit for my motor and it is a must have for us old folks.

It is not an advertized product.

He is Propeller Dynamics at Sanderson's in Chester.

fishing user avatarZoff reply :

Count me in. Planned on going anyway.

fishing user avatarfishinkeebs reply :

Sounds good

fishing user avatarZoff reply :

OK... Sam... set up some days and time when you want to get us together. Saturday, IMO, would be the best day. What time?

fishing user avatarSam reply :

If possible, lets try to get everyone together for a photo with Ish Monroe.

John Crews will be there, too, and we can get to him for a Kodak moment.

We will have to check the seminar schedule for Saturday to pull this off.

fishing user avatarsoccplayer07 reply :

sounds good

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

I should be there either Fri or Sat.

fishing user avatarZoff reply :

I can be there on Saturday. Plan on driving up Sat morning.... hitting Bass Pro and redeem a mess of gift cards. Then... over to the expo to... well... spend some more money and see the sights.

SAM... you name the time and I'll see you there.

Don't forget to stop by Green Top in the old Gander Mountain location, exit 86 off I-95.

http://www.greentophuntfish.com/

When you are heading north on I-95 it is the Atlee-Elmont exit. Head towards Elmont.

If you are coming I-81 to I-64 to I-295 to I-95 the Atlee-Elmont exit is the first one after you get on I-95 north.

To avoid the I-95 traffic you may want to exit onto Route 1 off I-295 heading to Ashland and then drive slow on Route 1 to the next I-95 right hand turn traffic light by Sonic (2+/- miles) and then another right at the first traffic light. Easier way to go to avoid I-95 traffic but it takes about 5 extra minutes.

When you leave Green Top cross over the road you took to get into the Green Top shopping center and you can go straight on that road through the traffic signal and you can follow that road to Bass Pro Shop. If you have time there is a little pond on your left along the way and you can stop and do some fishing.

You can't miss the Green Top sign to your left as you are heading north on I-95. So if you want to hit BPS first you can then go down to exit 86 and make it to Green Top on your way home.

Green Top will have a big section at the Expo so ask for Steve, Stan and the other guys who bass fish and they will be happy to talk with you and show you their products.

Watch your speed on I-295 as you get closer to I-95. The state troopers call this area the fishing hole as they can give as many speeding tickets they wish any day of the week in this area.

Looking forward to seeing you and the Meet & Greet gang again. You guys are the best!!!!

fishing user avatarZoff reply :

Thanks for the info, I am an old Richmond guy anyway. Started my Virginia life there in 1967. Have many family in and around the city and end up there at least once a year. In fact... I was last up there and hit Gander Mt. for the big sellout before Greentop moved in. That was like... what? Last year? Been there twice since then. Haven't been to Greentop yet but just may have to. Trying to get Nitrofreak to go as well. I might bring a buddy with me as he is a basser as well.

fishing user avatarBigbarge50 reply :

Will be there again this year and would love to meet up.  Can make friday or sunday

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Zoff, the more the merrier.

If you do head this way try to add Castaways to your list of places to visit.

Castaways is in Chester.

Let me know what day(s) you will be in town.

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

A popular spot to meet for the early risers (ie: exhibitors that have to be there an hour early) is the Dennys next to Kings Dominion (its in the hotel next to KD). I saw several expo folks there the last two years prior to the show each day.

fishing user avatarZoff reply :

OK... I will absolutely be there Saturday.  I will arrive about 8:00 or 8;30 AM.  Got to meet up with a friend and will have two others with me.  Somebody name a place and time and we're there.

The discount is on the coupon itself in the RTD. I am not aware of any online discount codes, but I'll keep looking. Sometimes local shops have discount coupons as well - like Green Top. You can always call and ask them.

Time? Depends on the seminars. Will get back with you.

Everyone else gonig on Friday can meet us at Green Top's location, too.

Would love to meet all the guys.

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

When you guys visit the Expo, can i ask a huge favor?

Take a few minutes out of your day to stop by and talk with the Central VA Heroes On the Water table? It will be co-located at the Appomattox River Company setup in the back. Stop by and find out what they are doing for service members.

Yea, I saw that snow forecast. If its too bad, I'll wait until Sat.

I plan on being there between 10 - 10:30

I be wearing a sort of tan Humminbird hat.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Friday could be a bust depending on the time the snow arrives.

So far the forecast is for snow to start in the Richmond area in the afternoon.

Here is what Dave a wxrisk.com, a private weather forecasting company has posted.

Sorry for the mispellings but Dave is a weather guy and his typeing is poor at times when he gets excited:

*** ALERT*** 00Z ECMWF BRINGS BACK FRIDAY SNOW FOR WVA... VA southern MD and northern NC... For southrrn WVA SW VA including ROA the model shows 0.25 -0.50" liquid which would be 3-6" for wva and sw VA... For all of VA northern NC MD 0.12 -0.27" which COULD BE. .. 2-4" snow

The forecast is for all of Virgina, Northern North Carolina, DC and Maryland.

We will have to meet on Saturday.

Everyone be careful in the snow and let's hope it is only rain.

I hate snow!

10:30 Saturday by the GMCO display is a good place to meet.

You can talk to George until we all get there.

We could go to the Green Top area but it is too big and congested.

Everyone be careful in the snow and its aftermath.

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

To be honest, I don't think anyone knows what is going to happen.  The models are literally all over the charts right now, including the latest from WxRisk himself......

"0Z WED RUN OF THE GFS... the model shows .....nothing. I cannot even find a Low on the model . The Model has NO snow of any kid of an portion of VA NC MD DEL PA NJ NY or New England through Saturday. There is a brief 3 hrs window of snow flurries -- or maybe its dandruff ..over northern WVA and western MD.  And thats it. Of course the last 5 runs of the GFS have shown well NOTHING so this isnt anything. will wait Until Tomorrow before I am any decisions to bail on on this event .  It will BE interesting to see what the two "snowy" Model -- the 0z Canadian Model does... which on Tuesday midday DID show significant VA MD SNOWSTORM for jan 25 ... and the 0Z EURO which also has been at times snowy....."

One thing for sure though is that it is going to be cold, so dress appropriately.  The Expo is climate controlled but the temps inside of the building will still be cooler than you expect.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Hanover, here is what Dave posted 9 hours ago:

*** 0Z WED NAM MODEL... IS NOW IN... This run of this weather Model IS WEAKER with the FRIDAY SYSTEM and has snow ONLY from Richmond SOUTH INTO Central NC. Taken verbatim the Model show only 2 " of snow over central/ southeast va... YES including all of Hampton Roads and 3 " over much of central and Northern NC.... Raleigh Hickory Greensboro even 1 " at Charlotte . The Model shows NO snow NORTH of line from LEXINGTON VA to RICHMOND.

If the snow is south of Richmond than it will only impact Zoff and the other guys coming from the south and west to the Expo.

Hopefully the system will go way south and paralize all of North Carolina just for the fun of it with nothing falling in Virginia other than sweet sunshine and blue skies.  Make that Carolina blue skies.

Looking forward to meeting you at the Expo.

Be safe no matter what the weather and Zoff, take it easy if you have snow. I will PM my cell phone number to you so you can call me to find out what is going on over here in central Virginia.

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

I know, it's crazy how varied the reports are. One thing I do like about the WxRisk postings is that he always is open about why he is correct or made an error. At least he raises the awareness of the public to not rely on the NOAA or other weather sites alone. You have to take it all in to get some form of a feel for what will happen. All I know is that in the past, events like Sandy, Katrina, Irene, etc were mis-forecast by local stations and he nailed it dead on including the precise track. The only other group of meteroligists I have seen that have come close are the ones for the utility industry.

- like I always do when I kayak in cold weather and cold water extremes......prepare for the worse and there will be no surprises :)

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

Yeah, the forecast keeps changing.......

*** ALERT *** ALERT 12Z NAM ..AGAIN INCREASES THE MOISTURE -- that means SNOW -- Over ALL portions of Southwest Central... southern central and Southeast VA for FRIDAY JAN 25

The New NAM model has 8 INCH SNOWFALL for ALL OF SOUTHWEST VA... from just west of Roanoke to Wise Including MARION ABINGDON WYTHEVILLE .. and 3-4 4 inches snow over over the VA - NC boerder areas Martinsville DANVILLE SOUTH HILL HILL EMPORIA & FRANKLIN and in NC MT AIRY REEDSVILLE and HENDERSON

They will be selling pretty much everything you would need from a boat down to baits.  I went last year and i didn't think the prices were that great but i may have missed some deals somewhere.

I like that you can see the pros, go to seminars and see pretty much every bait/rod/reel that you see online etc...in one place.

Pretty cool set up and worth the few bucks for admission.

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

The deals are best had late on Sunday when vendors are tyring to get rid of products they don't want to carry back. You can find deals if you are diligent - I found a mis-priced St. Croix Avid 6'8" MXF casting rod last year for $74.99 :o.......you read that right. A $180 rod for $75!!! You just have to be diligent and be willing to look at every rod in the booths.

The seminars are the icing on the cake for me.

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

I was there when the doors opened this morning. Walked around about 1/2 dozen times by every display. Attended the 11:00 seminar by Steve Chaconas--Top 10 lures from ICAST.

Spent some time with a couple of Jr. BASS anglers, talked with Robbie Patterson of REALDEAL PROPS, ate lunch, stayed until it started snowing and left. I guess I wasn't recognized by anyone that knew I was going to be wearing the Humminbird hat.

The only thing I was looking for was not there.  Pretty much boring for a seasoned angler.

fishing user avatarZoff reply :

Whelp... I will be there in the morning.  I am the 6'3" ugly dude with a tan hat with a blue bill and a fish on it... a charcoal grey Stratos hoodie.  Probably sunglasses.  There will be three other guys with me... one is like 6'5" so you won't be able to miss us.  Yell "Zoff" and I will know.

I felt the same way, i stayed for less than 1hr. More food and craft vendors then it was fishing. I had a better time stopping in at greentop.

Today was kind of slow but we had plenty of traffic at our setup.  Didn't get a chance to hit any seminars, but Saturday is the big day.  Met Sam today and had a nice chat with him for a bit.  Hope to meet some more of you tomorrow.

If you have some free time around 3pm, make your way over to the Seminar 2 location back by the concessions in the back.  I'll be in the seminar with ARC and we will be hosting a panel discussion about kayak angling and species specific techniques.  I'll be wearing my Hobie Fishing Team shirt and visor standing next to my yellow Hobie Revolution the rest of the day, so I should be pretty easy to pick out :).

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

Man I wish I could join you guys, busy weekend for me down here.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

How about 11 AM at the GMCO location at the Expo?

I will try to make it but with the snow and ice in my neighborhood getting out can be a problem.

I went today and had a great time. Picked up some nice baits and met a number of old fishing industry friends. Also salivated over the Legend boats and put my hands all over the Tritons just for the fun of it.

Go to Appomattox Rive Company along the back wall and meet Chad. Great guy and he posts all the time on the forum.

Bring money as the Bait Monkey will be watching you.

If you are from out of town consider hitting Green Top (exit 86) and BPS (exit 89).

The Expo exit is the same for Kings Dominion, exit 98. Just look for the Kings Dominion exit and you will be on your way.

Everyone be careful on the roads and have fun.

fishing user avatarZoff reply :

I was there at GMCO.  Nobody showed so I went and listened to Ish.  Guess nobody came?

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

No one from BR stopped by the ARC booth to meet up yesterday that I was aware, only Sam on Friday.  I'll be there today again (from 10-1) only for a few hours due to a prior committment with my son.  Know your price points on certain items to avoid paying normal price for the sake of being at the show.

fishing user avatarZoff reply :

To be honest, I came buy at one time but there was a small cround around and... well... business is business.  I ment to come back but one of the guys I was with became like a Snickers commercial and started to whine about being hungry.  I got mad enough and just bailed out of there and forgot to come back buy.

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

I was in there yesterday morning from about 9:30-11:30 or so....I wasn't to impressed. It was cool to see the bass boats and I did pick up some money minnows for 2.99 a pack and some jitterbugs for cheap but after factoring in the admission cost I probably paid about retail price lol.

Seems like it was more of a retail store than any great deals as most stuff was normal MSRP.

I was gonna stop by and say hi to chuck and Jim and Tina at the ARC booth but there was a decent crowd around so I kept moving, last thing I need to do is look around and convince myself I need another kayak :)

I did check out the yak attack black pack crate for us kayak anglers and that thing is pretty nice.

fishing user avatarBigbarge50 reply :

I always find the seminars to be the hi light,  not the gear or deals.

I always bring a notebook and take notes, and for me that is what I view the price of admission for.  I still read the jig notes I wrote down from shaw girsby two years ago, and I think it has really helped me become a better jig fisherman.  A huge part was I was not throwing jigs because I had no confidence in them, I always went to my trusty texas worm.  Watching a true pro like him demonstrate, then getting like 10 minutes to ask him 1 on 1 follow up questions..... well would pay a lot more than 8 bucks for that.

As for the vendors.....well I usually buy a few smaller things but use it as a chance to talk stuff more than buy things or get good deals.  Jack's who sells all the zoom stuff was always a personal favorite, and that one vendor sells a ton of random stuff, but some good deals can be found in there.  I love swinging by the maps and talking fishing, and keep praying a Burke lake map would be done some day (I own all the ones for the bodies of water I fish).  Other than that, I can see why a lot of guys might not find it too thrilling.  I usually only walk around in between the speakers.

Wish the weather and illness (and work for me) did not get in the way of us all meeting up, that would have probably been able to have great info exchange.  Maybe this summer.

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

It was great meeting a couple of you guys this past weekend....Sam, Thorn et al. There were some deals to be had if you ventured into the booths versus just aisle hopping and scanning the outer edges. One vendor in particular had a great deal on TFO rods and Curados but you had to get inside their setup to see it. The latest version of the Curados were on sale for $119 new - they had several G6 and G5s available. The TFO deal was pretty sweet - the Tactical Series ($149 normally) selling for $89 and the Signature Series ($99 normally) selling for $69. For those that didn't make it, maybe next time. Hope to meet more of you in the future!
