Moved from the Downtown Richmond to Midlothian/North Chesterfield area. Really want to put my 10 freshwater poles to good use this year. Definitely want to capitalize on some good spawn fishing this spring and nice bank fishing in the summer........especially for BASS and CRAPPIE!!!
I do a lot of solo fishing with no boat, so pond and small lakes is what I know best!!! So if you can recommend some good public ponds or even some where I might get chased off of (never run from a challenge) would be greatly appreciated.
Black Bill, it is early Friday morning so I don't have time to do a lot of research for you in the Midlo area but I'll give it a shot.
Off the top of my head may I suggest hitting the pond off Southlake Blvd. which is off Midlo on the eastern side of Courthouse/Huguenot Road intersection. Go through the intersection and look for Southlake Blvd. Turn right and park in the realtor's lot. You can walk to the pond and then around it as you please.
Hit it for bass, crappie and bream.
Heading east on Midlo Turnpike you will see the Morefield Office Park on your right. Three small ponds in that complex with "no fishing" signs. Never been run off. Small bass in those ponds. I can't remember which one is the best so give them all a shot.
I have been run off the Arboretum Office Park pond. Nice bass in it. No idea if they still have security but if you want to chance getting run off give it a shot. Maybe the security guy will be taking a nap!!!
There is a pond in the Boulders office park. Look it up and fish it. I have not fished that pond in years. It is off Boulder Parkway and you turn into the Boulder Lake Drive parking lot.
There is a new pond off Lucks Lane in the area of St. Francis Hospital. You can give it shot. No idea if it holds a good population of fish. It is on your left as you travel towards the hospital on Lucks Lane.
In the Walton Park area there is a nice pond. I believe it is off Coalfield Road. Google Midlo area and you will see it.
You can hit the Powhatan Lakes, too. Check them out on Google.
Amelia Wildlife Area is a great small lake but hard to walk around. Limited bank fishing.
There are a lot of ponds in subdivisions but you will need written permission to fish them.
Get a copy of the 2018 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet from VG&IF (free) at Dicks, Bass Pro Shops or Green Top and look for the places to fish in the greater Chesterfield County area.
Be sure to have your Virginia fishing license with you in case the Chesterfield police ask you for it.
Good luck and let us know what ponds you fished and how you did.
That ought to keep him busy for a while!! Great info.
Welcome aboard! Love the name
That's what @Sam means by not having time for
a lot of research...it's still more complete than much
of what the rest of us would have put up WITH a lot
of research, LOL.
Ok Bill, let's keep the discussion going.
Salisbury Country Club has a series of three or four ponds we used to fish and pull out 3 ,4 and 5 pounders. Even wdycrankbait would clobber them at Salisbury.
We used to fish the ponds on Monday when the course was closed. Never had any problems. The golfers playing the course were not supposed to be there and if we were not supposed to be there so we had a Mexican stalemate. We let them play and they let us fish.
Now, there is a new golf pro who has stocked the ponds with trout and has put them off limits to fishing for those of us who are not members.
I have not fished the ponds in a few years and always enjoyed fishing them and meeting others who joined us. Caught a lot of beautiful bass in those ponds.

As for the pond at the Stonehenge Country Club off Midlo across from Wal-Mart, I never fished it but understand that if you ask the golf pro he may let you. Then again, I have never seen or heard of anyone fishing that pond.
One last place to try your luck. Off Providence Road heading south away from Midlothian Turnpike you will see Providence Methodist Church on your left. There is a pond on the other side of their parking lot. Just park and walk to the pond and give some topwaters a shot.
And don't forget to go to Dick's and get the 2018 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet. It has a listing of the places to fish all over Virginia.
Please PM with your results or court dates.
Thanks and good luck.
I just remembered!!! Pocahontas State Park.
You can rent a small boat and fish Swift Creek Lake or walk to Beaver Lake by the amphitheater.
You enter the park off Beach Road.
Check it out on Google.
Man this is some excellent suggestions and advise!!! I cannot wait to check out these recommendations and try to crank out a few quality size bass.
What time of day is best for all the aforementioned locations? I work afternoons and evenings during the week so most likely I will be a morning and weekend fisherman.

Hey, noticed you replied which is great!
Anytime of the day would be fine.
Try to get there before sunrise and start with topwaters.
Just go and give it a shot.
And let us know how you do.
Sam, @Sam
I had to run by the DMV today, and since I had little time before heading into the office, so I decided to run by the places you mentioned previously just to check out the area.
The pond on Southlake looks very promising, will definitely put that on top of my list for some bass and crappie.
I then proceeded down the block to check out the ponds behind Friday's on Midlothian. Has anyone ever pulled anything good out of there?
Next on the list were the ponds at Moorefield office park behind the Sheraton Hotel. Those 3 ponds look like they can be accessed pretty easily and look good enough to make a few cast.
But the ponds at Arboretum looks real nice! I count 3 of them right when you get on the property, then a 4th down by the Alstom offices which look like it could be the deepest. Really would like to try my luck with these, what size bass have been pulled out of these bad boys?
Once again thanks for the insight
I 2nd Swift Creek lake in Pocahontas state park. Great scenery, plenty of areas to explore and some good LMB. If you are on a budget: $6 to enter the park, I think $15 to rent a boat or kayak.
The whole lake may be a mile and a half long.
I live in Glen Allen , but now you have me thinking about dropping a line in Chesterfield

Try the pond behind Friday's. There are houses on one side which blocks that area but by the apartments you may be able to fish. Actually there is one big pond divided by a dam. But you can't cross the dam as it has an opening for the water to flow between each area.
Some nice bass have been pulled out of the Arboretum ponds before security runs you off. But give it a shot. No idea of what is in those ponds now.
Let me know how you do. Could be a good place.
Be safe.
Definitely will. Did some more scouting and checked out the pond at Boulders office park with the apartments on the other side. Wonder if they have any quality fish.
@Sam have you or heard of anyone else who has fished the Rock Creek Park Lake not too far from Boulders?

No one fishes Rock Creek Park Lake as it is too shallow.
But maybe you will have better luck.
Take a shot at the dam area.
Some of my favorite spots in the Midlo area:
Trophy Club Apartment ponds - Located off of Polo Parkway, three small ponds, very productive, but not many of good size
Stony Point Apartment Ponds - Located off Huguenot and Forrest Hill (Bon-Air), Theres good ones in these ponds I've had the best luck in the back of the complex
Salisbury Country-club- (Sam's instructions are spot on)
Stonehenge Golfcourse pond- Right across from the Walmart on Midlothian Tnpk, only fished it once but wasn't hassled and they were biting
Pond off Lucks Lane- Super clear water with lots of grass, theres some tanks in there but I haven't had luck. Buddy pulled an 8 out on a minnow tho.
Most of these spots are heavily pressured, but can be fun. Pm me if you have any questions, and sorry if I repeated stuff, just wanted to list some of my personal favorite spots in the area.

Last time I rode by that pond behind Friday's it was completely covered in algae.
Arboretum looks so juicy I worked them pretty hard one day with no luck, but good to know theres some big girls in there!
You can walk across the small dam behind fridays on midlothian , I have caught a few small black crappies from behind there.
Arboretum ponds have some nice sized bass and I have seen a 13'' crappie come out the small pond closest to 288. Southlake has a decent amount of fish also , Ive caught several smaller bass from there on many occasions. The ponds behind applebees or morefield as its called also has some nice size bass in it , I have caught several 3lb and up fish from the 3rd pond from the bottom of morefield. Ive been skunked out lucks lane twice but that place is beautiful and looks promising. I bank fish the area alot when I dont have the time or energy to take my boat out and live right off arch road , Hit me up sometime , I dont mind showing you around as Ive been to all the above listed spots and have a few more of my own.

That's for the reply @Marvin Bikelife Banks. I have noticed when the water is low you can skip across the d**n at the pond behind Friday's on Midlothian as well.
As I stated before, I am still exploring the waterways in South Richmond. So today I road by Lucks Lane and that is one pretty body of water right there, can't wait to try my "Luck" there. Where do you park your vehicle at if you fish that pond though? @Graham since Lucks Lane has a lot of grass, I'm guessing soft plastics is the way to go.
As far as the Arboretum and Moorefield ponds, what time do you recommend (mornings, evenings, weekends) and what is your bait of choice?
@Black Bill Dance if you continue down lucks lane towards 288 passed the pond there is a road to your right, I think it’s just a service road it dead ends, but I just park right on the side of it. There’s a trail leading through the woods from there that takes you out to the pond. Hope that helps!
Ive never seen a bass come out from behind fridays , only crappie.
As graham said follow lucks amd make the first right before 288 and walk the trail or park up at the dominion lot at the other end I belive it is but it is a longer walk.
As for moorfield and arboretum I usually fish weekends and after business hours , I have been asked to leave arboretum this was a weekday around lunch time. I just left and came back after 5 lol

Haha stick it to the man! After receiving a trespassing to fish ticket last season by the federal reserve building in Goochland, I try to avoid these types of situations...
Yea I dontblame you I definitely would also

Man was I bummed tho! Hooked into a 5+ that jumped off and 5 minutes later the Goochland county sherif was on my tail. Had no idea I was fishing on federal property lol. And the kicker was that the sherif was a fisherman himself, he even gave me some tips as he wrote my 120$ citation!
ouch , smh $120 bucks that sucks
Speaking of lucks lane its the peak institute parking lot if you dont want to park off the side of the road by 288 , I had said it was dominion power by accident.
Has anyone ever caught anything at the 2 ponds off charter colony pkwy ? There is a large one behind the credit union and a smaller one that as near the intersection of charter colony and waterford that is almost next to the GE power building. That larger pond looks nice , I see a ton of no fishing signs and it seems to have been occupied the one saturday I attempted to fish there so I left and went elsewhere
you guys ever have any luck out of that pond on lucks lane? I landed a catfish there last time I went on a bass underspin lol.

Anyone know of any good places for shore fishing for bass and crappie in western Henrico or Glen Allen?

My friends brother pulled an 8 out of there with live bait. I personally have been skunked there about 3 times.
Ok yea I stopped by 2 days ago and caught a dink using a black and blue drop shot worm.
I am going to start going to swift creek often I went to cabelas and brought a wide 12ft jon I can tote In the back of my truck to hit the res up whwn I like , I wouldn't dare try to unload my pontoon on that little beach lls

Yes It was clear , I fished the shallow cove back closer to where the rocks are when you come out from the woods if you park beside 288.
Might have to patrol the banks there for some bedding mamas before the spawn is over!

Used to go to the reservoir at least 3 times a week. If you know what you're doing it has HOGS in it. My top 2 PB's were caught there. Great rocks, grass, and pads. Just bring a net... ????

Hey Guys...hope everyone is out enjoying this weather we are having and hopefully having some tight lines.
A little update...I was scanning through some old topics about some fishing spots in Midlothian/South Richmond, and one really caught my attention that was located in a housing subdivision.
So knowing that it was gonna be a scorcher (97 degrees) on Saturday, I told myself I was going to hit this pond right at sunrise before it got too hot. Even though I didn't get off work until 11:30pm and after I put some new treble hooks on my topwater lures it was 1:30am.
I got up at 5:30am and hit the water by 6:10am and on the 3rd cast with my Rebel Pop-R....she just crushes it in about 2 feet of water!!! Now you talking about a rush at 6am! But as the morning goes on, only 3 dinks hit my topwater after that. Sqaurebill crank, chatterbait, lipless crank, senko...they didn't want anything else but the Pop-R. But glad I was able to nab big momma here though.

Have any of you guys been having any luck lately?
From the shore, I haven't been getting much in the way of bass hits for about the last ten days at Swift Creek Res. Caught a couple from the yak last Sunday. Bluegill seem to be the bank fishing catch of the moment. My six year old daughter loves it!
@Black Bill Dance the bite has slowed down for me, should pick back up here soon.
Things are picking up on the reservoir. Now, if she would just let me catch some fish.
@RSmall things are picking up for me as well. Just got on a really fun frog bite this evening. I’m gonna be fishing the reservoir tomorrow evening...hope to have as much luck as the female angler in the pics above
@Graham, did you make it out Saturday evening? We were out from 3:00 until about 8:00. Only caught two bass but one was somewhere around 4 1/2 pounds.

I’ll take quality like that over quantity most days. Unfortunately I didn’t make it out, life happened. I’ll be out there for sure a few times this summer tho! Keep sticking big ones!
Been wanting to get out there at dawn at the pond on Lucks Lane. Really clear water...I wanna give my new whopper plopper a go this weekend. What spots do u guys plan on hitting?

We live right on Swift Creek Res so I'll be sticking around here. It seems to be picking back up.
Three pounder from last night.
How’s everyone making out? Seems a bit slow right now.
R, looks that way.
Has been way too hot and humid to be on the water.
Going from 6 to Noon is not a bad idea unless you are going to miss work.
Keep us posted on Swift Creek.
last few times out i have done pretty well numbers wise but the size isn't there just yet. The best places i have been have moving water which i guess is keeping it a little cooler and more oxygenated....oh and i am in a kayak not the bank.

Despite that my daughter goes to after school care at the YMCA at Nuckols and Twin Hickory, I had to look on a map to see where those four ponds are. Have you given them a go?

When the subdivision first opened I fished one of the ponds.
Caught a few dinks.
Never returned but you go and fish them and let us know what you catch.
Good luck.
I fished Lake Rooty yesterday for a little while and caught one small one. That lake has gone through some stuff for sure. When i was working in innsbrook 5 years ago I could count on catching between 2-3 during my lunch break just about every day. There are still lots of sunnies in there but bass wise not so much. I have see na few large carp i nether too which i may have to target on the fly rod one of these days....

Pretty sure I know where you got that one based on the background. The fence they put around the pond has helped with the geese. I may have caught that same fish a few weeks ago in the corner. I was catching crappie there last weekend way out near the middle using a 2.8 keitech on a guppy head. Also got a few by the drain near the tree.

How's the water clarity recently? Last year with all the rain we got every time i fished Chesdin it was like chocolate milk. I launched near the dam at the public ramp. With a kayak i'm a bit limited in where i can go there. The other place i've put in is way up by Chesdin Landing. Didn't have much luck there, but might give it a try again.
@James Janousek Never knew there was crappie in there, probably because I only go for the bass.
Dude on social media caught like a 20 pound channel cat out of there on Tuesday. Maybe we can link up sometime and beat the bank.
"Just cause you BEAT the BANK...don't mean you can't CATCH a TANK!"
fished the James out of Watkins landing,,, nadda,,, water was high and muddy.
After running some errands after work on Friday, I decided to stop by my neighborhood pond.
Got a solid 2 pounder in the first 15 minute with black Zoom finesse trick work. Then at dusk on the opposite corner of the pond....this Big Girl just smoked the Munky Butt Whopper Plopper 110!!!
She might have slung mudd in my face, but this 5 Pound Slouch was well worth it!
1st Topwater bass of 2019
2019 TOPWATER Bite is really heating up!!!
5 Pound Big Bertha and a 3 Pound stud on Whopper Plopper 110 in hour & half of fishing.
We hit Swift Creek Reservoir for a couple of hours Saturday morning and a couple more Sunday evening and landed four bass between 2 and 3 pounds. The bowfin was caught on my first cast from the dock while waiting for the lollygaggers to come down to the boat.
All were caught with Yum Dingers in red shad.

How did you have the Yum Rigged? And what was you setup?

Weightless with 4/0 Hooks. She was using a medium-light spinning rod. I was using a medium. I think we both had 20 lb braid. Flouro would probably be better with the worms but neither of us has had much luck with that. I put some sinking braid on one of my rods earlier today and am looking forward to trying that out.
What a beast!!! She slammed the Whopper Plopper right at nightfall....7 lbs 2oz!!! Gotta luv that topwater bite!!!
As you can tell I was pretty hype to catch this toad on the last cast!!!
Caught this guy at diascund reservoir after the long paddle (5 miles) to the lilly pad field. 5lb 9oz
This pesky rain is keeping me off the water. I have not been out since I got back from Lake St Clair in Michigan.
Old trusty spinnerbait at a golf course pond fishing for the 1st time. 6 pounders hitting right at your feet is always a fun fight!
Last fish of the day comes in at 4.8 lbs on the Sexy Shad chatterbait!

is there any smallmouth in Swift Creek?
Anybody fish the lower section of swift creek at LakeView in Colonial Heights?
Hey guys, I’m pretty desperate and I could use some help...please.
Look, I’m kind of not a good dad. I have a 7 yr old and we’re not very close. I really want him to experience how fun fishing can be, but I haven’t been fishing in 30 years.
I spent the better part of a week doing research, watching videos, and trying to get just the very basics I would need to at least give him half a chance to catch a fish. I learned that bluegill and crappie are fairly common in Pocahontas State Park, and I saw people having success with Rebel crickhoppers.
So I bought a pole, a crickhopper, some 4 lb test, and some crickets. I took today off (One of my last few vacation days) to go try to apply what I’ve learned before taking him...and it was a complete disaster.
Once I got to the state park (right by the boat launch) I realized I had absolutely no idea where to go. I mean, I could go to the little floating docks, but that seemed too easy. Surely you couldn’t catch fish in the most obvious and heavily trafficked area in the park, could you?
So I asked some guy and he said to try at the bottom of the dam. So an hour later, after I got lost, I find my way to the little stream just past the dam, and the water’s only 6” deep. How the hell am I supposed to fish in that?!
So then I make my way all the way back to my original spot. I fish off the docks, up and down the banks. Nothing. I wanted to switch to a bobber and a cricket since they weren’t taking my lure near the surface - but I realized I have no idea how deep that part of the lake is. Since I suck at EVERYTHING dealing with fishing (I almost quit just trying to figure out how to restring my reel) I had no desire to put that much effort into swapping out my whole setup just to have my bait sitting on the lake bed. So I gave up.
Can anyone please help me? Teach me how and where to fish? I simply don’t have the time to spend several years fishing off and on to build up that kind of experience. And if I start now, my kid will be 20 by the time I learn enough.
So I hate to sound this pathetic and desperate, but please help me. I’ll even pay. My kid deserves so much better than the half-assed attempt at being a dad that I give him.
I’ll give my number to anyone who wants to talk. Thanks.
Hire a guide and you will not only catch some fish, but you will learn
more in a single day than spending a month on the internet. Take your
son with you on the first trip, your guide will take care of you both.

Tony, I have never stopped to fish this pond off Luck's Lane but I have read on this Forum of some guys who caught some dinks out of it.
Sorry, I am totally of no help on this pond.

Don't forget to update your Avatar with your location so we can give you better suggestions.
Do the following with your son next time you go out, remembering that he will have the concentration of a gnat and at his age he needs some fishing action.
Look up Westminster-Canterbury, 804/256-2092, 804/264-8000 and ask the operator for security or who you can speak with to get permission to fish their pond. If they say "no" let me know by personal message and I will ask my friend to give the gate guard your name so you can get into the place. Google Westminster-Canterbury Richmond to see the place.
1. Buy a loaf or two of cheap white bread the day you go fishing.
2. Rig up a Zebco or a cane pole with a small gold with a long shank hook and a small red/white bobber. 4 to 6 pound test is fine.
3. Bring needle nose pliers with you to remove the hooks.
4. Follow the road around the complex and note the pond on your right and park in the last parking lot and walk to the pond. Fish off the gazebo.
5. Roll a small piece of white bread onto your hooks and drop the rig straight down into the water.
6. The bluegills and bream will crush it.
7. After catching about 100 or so you can go home. You can actually watch the small piece of dough be knocked around before it disappears into a bluegill's mouth.
8. Bring iPhone to take photos.
9. Clean up after yourself and throw all the fish back.
10. Bring snacks and bottled water.
11. Throw any remaining bread to the ducks or tear it up and throw it on the water so your son can see a bluegill feeding frenzy.
12. On way home go to Mission Bar-B-Q and have a fun late lunch or early dinner.
Go on Google and look up Westminster-Canterbury, 1600 Westbrook Avenue, Richmond, and you will see the pond and where to park You go past the pond on your right to the parking lot. Do not speed as the limit is 15 MPH.
As for bass in this pond all I have caught have been dinks. But the bluegill and bream population is outstanding.
Google will not let me post the pics so you will have to check it out on your own.
Have fun and post pictures.
