Thought I would have a posting of my experiences on Clarks Hill/Strom Thurmond lake. Feel free to post your own report here, or keep it a secret...lol.
10/3/2014
Evening bite is excellent, top water bait in the shallows and a drop bait off the points. Buddy pulled in 2x 5+lbs, I was at work, about killed me not being out there. Attached are his fish, not mine.
10/4/2014
Morning slow action but were schooling well after the sun came up in the coves where the wind was blowing into. Top water rattles about 50yrds off of the shore caught some smalls. Watermelon lizard in the shallows caught some more smalls. Water is very low and clear, be cautious of just under the water between the islands, many trees and stumps.
nice fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6OCT2014
Went to Keg Creek did some bank fishing. Hitting on top mid-day, not on anything I threw at them though (White Fluke, Spook, transparent popper). So I decided to go for the deep with a blue worm, 3 feet from shore got hit hard, thought I was hung up at first then the line started moving, I lifted up gently to set hook, but the line and pole I was using was all wrong, line snapped and I saw the big one swim away. Yes i cussed a little, but a little while later as I was running a shaky head with a white grub, I snagged my line that broke earlier. Found my worm and hook that the fish had earlier. Beautiful day out with a little bit of wind. Other anglers out there too, didn't see them catch anything either.
Other baits used today: Watermelon lizard, Lipless silver/blue crank, and silver spoon.
Lesson learned today: Don't fish for big fish on a light line and pole, and ease up on the drag setting if you do.

Yeah my friend caught them.
10OCT2014
So hit up Keg Creek after dropping son off at school. Saw very little top water action, no hits on poppers or baby bass fluke. Went for dark worm, 3rd cast about 10 feet from shore, bam, fish on... As I was reeling in my new friend, I started thinking, I am so glad I was fishing with a heavier pole and line... wait did I reset the drag? Snap goes the line...nope guess not.
Moved to the other side of the road.
So there I was.. bluegills to the front of me, bluegills to the right and left, gotta be some bass around here. So I pull out my bluegill soft plastic and I go to work. Worked a fan area...walk down about 10 feet, repeat. Bluegills still just hanging around, looking at me looking at them. A few fish jumping every once in a while, tossed out fluke...nothing. Well it was a nice day out and I did at least have some excitement. Maybe next time.
11OCT2014
Cherokee Creek was good today, a bit windy as the day went on. Early morning poppers caught a few small ones in the coves, but the big ones are hang out at the bottom of the points. Used purple lizard and drug and bounced it off the bottom, caught quite a few more, biggest caught of the day is the attached picture. Finally got setting my drag down...lol.
17OCT2014
Keg Creek had action on top early morning, fished both sides of the bridge area from the bank, caught a small one on a popper and lost a lizard. Lizard was getting some hits, just no good strikes. After someones dog came by and started swimming, I decided it was time to go. Beautiful morning with light wind around 930.
18OCT2014
Another great day out on Cherokee Creek! First fish on for me was a 5 lber(caught on blue/purple lizard), followed by a 2lber(caught on blue/purple lizard), and finally a 4lber(caught on a rattle crank bait); all of these where about 50+ft off shore line. Very little top water action, most of these were small and got off quick. Wind was a little rough starting out but finally settled down some. My friend has been going out in the evenings too, and has caught some big boys as well.
I normally fish towards the middle/upper part of the lake. Lately it's been hit or miss, and the hydrilla is terrible. Is the hydrilla really thick in the GA little river also? Whenever I get around the hydrilla, i am almost guranteed to catch a jack fish. I plan on heading up to the lake tomorrow morning (10/23).

Yeah with the water level being down the hydrilla is pretty bad in almost every flat and cove I have been in.
fished from around 8:30am - 12 today. Caught my first fish before I got the boat off the trailer (they were feeding on shad behind the boat ramp. Ended up with 4 decent sized bass, several babies, and more than a handful of jackfish. once 11am rolled around, the bite seemed to turn completely off. Some were caught on a hula popper, some on a lipless crankbait, a small square bill, and a plastic lizard carolina rigged, frog patterned color. something pretty large took a lunge at a buzzbait in a foot of water, but it missed the hook. I frantically threw back and around the area with the buzzbait and other baits, but that big one didn't care for any more excitement i guess
23OCT2014
Chilly morning starting out, went to Points West today to fish the banks, never have caught anything there...until today. Used my best buddy Mr. Lizard and caught a good size one, I had some issues getting this bass up on shore so he got a little dirty. Then I tried the peanut crank and caught the second one, really small. Thought it was funny so took a picture of it. So same indicators as the days before, very little top action, bigger fish in the deep, small ones on top and in shallows. Turned out to be another beautiful Georgia morning!

2nd one

Sounds like you had a pretty good day then. Where did you go to?
I put the boat in the back of Landam Creek, and went over to Wells creek first. Then back across and into Bennington creek before returning to Landam. fished the points in Landam and didn't have a bite. found some small ones schooling in the back that provided a little entertainment before heading home.
Black and Blue anything have been working very well for me, whether worm or lizard, will try my jig tomorrow morning though.
I was marking an awful lot of fish lingering in the 20-25ft range in 30-45ft of water, in the middle of every creek i went in. I assumed they were hybrid/striper. I decided to tie on a couple of deep diving crankbaits and see if i could get one anyway. It didn't take 10min to have a white perch on one of lines, so I didn't bother trying that again (where there is one, there's always a lot more)
25OCT2014
Cherokee Creek
It was a VERY foggy morning, couldn't see but 5 foot in front of the boat. Had to use GPS to navigate, had to listen for the bait to hit the water, couldn't see nothing. Once the sun came up and burned off the fog we hit the points, coves, and the creek channels, got 3 small ones on lipless cranks. Nothing on the blue and black jig, lizard, chatter, cranks, worms, flukes or craws. One of the fish that was caught still had a craw in its mouth, tried that for a while, but nothing. Slow day at the lake for me and my fishing partner for sure.
Side note: For the top water the fish were bumping the baits, mind you it wasn't strikes, it was bumps, don't know what this means or if anyone has see this before, just thought it was strange. Maybe the fish were trying to scare of what they thought were intruders? IDK.
when i've had fish "bumping" my topwater baits, i realized it was my fault that I wasn't getting hooked up. I was making the bait move too much. when they would go to strike, I would already be in motion to make the lure move out of the fishes way. switched to a frog colored hula popper that doesn't move side to side, and have had much better luck with the topwater bite.
Good to know, thanks rob, will give it a try if it happens again.

Points West
Get a late start to lake, check.
Step in a lot of mud on the bank and almost lose shoe, check.
Get one of your favorite lures stuck on tree sticking out of water, check.
Brake the line trying to retrieve lure, check.
Don't get a bite all morning because you are furstrated trying to catch a fish, check.
Something told me to stay home today. Guess I just had a bad day, got in a lot of practice though, pitching and flipping are going to take a whole lot more practice, I so suck at it...lol. Saw some top water action going on, but that about it. But you know, about half way through my fishing day, I took a moment to just look around. Looked at the trees starting to turn colors, seeing the bait fish swim just a few feet in front of me, taking in a deep fresh breath of air, and really just enjoying my surroundings to remember why I love the outdoors so much.
Saturday has to be better!!!
so what's the latest news, BrownBear? I've been working 6, 9 & 10 day stretches. Haven't had any time to get out there; all I can do is imagine what it would be like to be fishing while i'm at work.
15MAR2015
It was sooo nice to be back out on the lake after the cold weather has gone! Weather was great, slight chilly in the morning moved into 70s by midday. Water temp ranged from 50-68 degrees, fish were hard to locate, majority caught were even on the sonar. Caught a few bass off of my new Fat Free Guppy crankbait out of the $2.99 box at Academy, love discount bait! Don't have pictures right now, but they weren't that big only a 1-2lbers, still fun though!
Baits used: Rubber Worms w/bullet weight - worked
Blue craw w/weight - not worked
Fat Free Guppy crankbait - worked best
White and Green jig w/ and w/o trailers - not worked
Pumpkin jig - not worked
Baby Bass Fluke - not worked

Me either Rob, sorry was in hibernation...lol
Same here. I've never been a fan of having to bundle up and struggle to stay warm while fishing. A buddy and myself are heading out first thing in the morning to try the savannah river, Jackson SC area. I haven't heard of the stripers making their annual run up the river yet, but that should be happening within the next few weeks. The plan is to start out with a square bill, a white/chartreuse spinner bait and maybe a big creature bait.

Cool, tight lines to ya!
Saturday can't come fast enough! After last week's fishing trip, I have been itching to get back out on the water. It's been raining last couple of days so hoping that will make for great fishing in the morning. Been reading a lot on worms and senkos, I want to work these hard tomorrow, but I am at the mercy of my friend who will be driving the boat. I try to complement to what he is fishing with, most of the time...lol.

Rubber worm with bright neon green tipped tail - Jack x2

It was freakin' cold! lol
I didn't catch nothing, me and my friend had a plan. We both been researching and developing our plan, which of course goes out the window when you get on the water...lol. Oakley Bass Tournament was going on down at Wildwood, we went up to Soap Creek. Checked the results after we loaded up the boat, those guys must have knew what to do, man how discouraging seeing their weight-ins.
It was crowded up at Soap too, seemed like everyone was out for the morning, almost didn't have a spot to park. Well, besides freezing my tail off, I had fun and enjoyed the day out on the water. Can't always get the fish I guess, but you can always enjoy your time.
You got that right!!! We put my boat in on Friday to check everything out and as soon as I got the boat back on the trailer it started hailing!!!! That right there had my mind mest up. We started in grays creek and looked promissing caught a 3 pounder first cast after that nothing. The next day we went back out we decided to try the south Carolina side out. Started out with a 2 pounder that was it. About 1:00 we went farther up and and we found a good are and started catching good fish left and right just no 5 pounders. The guy who caught the 2nd place fish caught it with a spinner bait in 2 inchs of water. the guy first place new what he was doing but I think it was mostly luck of the draw. Defiantly had a blast my first time on such a beUtiful lake.
Heading up there inn a couple days, any suggestions where to start?

Pulled this one out of soap creek.
What I figured out was to find dirty water. Every fish we caught was in less than 3 feet. I had to raise my trolling motor up to even be able to fish it. We were very lonely where I was in soap creek. Only saw 1 other boat all morning. Everyone else we passed on the way in was fishing deep. I couldn't get anything going out there.
seemed like the blue back and chrome rattle trap did the best for us pulling it off the bank going down a steep drop off. We also caught all our other fish on shallow running dark orange crank baits. The weather was compketley diffrent then wish I could head back out there. On 4/2/2015 at 7:24 AM, retiredbosn said:Heading up there inn a couple days, any suggestions where to start?

Probably work the shallows near the streams, according to blackmax135 and Mtnfisher. I like Cherokee Creek and Soap Creek best. Fish have been in the beds last couple times I have been up. Should be pretty good fishing ahead with hopefully the last cold snap gone. Good luck to ya!

Not at all I have no secrets. this particular fish was caught on a 1/2 ounce white chatter bait with a 4.5" lake fork live majic shad as a trailer white also. It went 7.05lbs for 7th over all in the oakley tournament. we were all the way in the back of soap creek. we also caught several flipping a 3/8 and 1/2 ounce jig green pumpkin with orange. with a 4.2 beaver trailer in tramp stamp color going down the bank flipping bushes toward the powerlines on the right bank. water was so dirty you only got bit if your flip was right on the base of bushes. every fish we caught was in less than about 3 feet.

OK, cool thanks for the info. I just got done watching Glenn's video on chatter baits, he was using a white chatter with trailer. It seems that may be the hot ticket right now..lol. Congrats on the tournament btw. I was going to enter one this month, but I realized I needed to practice more and save my money.
Retiredbosn had a good idea check out what he has in mind.

Did you make it up here yet? Didn't see any pics...lol. Going to go out tomorrow morning and give it a go, didn't go last weekend and its been driving me crazy.
Going tomorrow, we went down to Marion yesterday, wow what a snag infested mess! Launched at northern most ramp, river was way high almost flood conditions.

Never been there, sounds like I don't want to...lol. OK, well I am putting in at Soap Creek, maybe I will see you out there.
I drive a White Chevy 1500 4x4 will be towing a Nitro 911 CDC, thinking about heading out right now, will take about an hour to get there.
PM'd ya.
Went up this afternoon April 10th, launched at the 378 bridge on Soap Creek, went up in the creek past the bridge. The hybrids were schooling in there this evening, the action was fast, and ended up with a couple decent hybrids. Never caught them before, definitely fun, caught them on a white fluke the super size 5" inch I think; the magnum 7" was too big. I would cast in when they were busting the surface and let it sink. If I started twitching the bait at the surface I didn't catch any got a few hits that I think were the bass just swiping the bait to stun it, I would let it sink, never took more than ten seconds and bam!
First time at Hill 22 Mar. We saw slot of fish in the shallows near the military rec area. Beautiful lake, water was very clear.
I was up around Points West today. Saw the bass on the beds, they just didn't bite for me after 9am. Caught 2 *hybrids*. Here a pic of the bigger one. Caught using bass colored popper.

I'm not being a smart arse but, that's a hybrid, stripers lines are straight and not broken, it is hard to distinguish between them sometimes. Hybrids can get up around 20lbs, but typically top out between 10-15lbs, that's a nice fish.
Corrected...thanks!
On 4/12/2015 at 7:57 PM, BrownBear said:Corrected...thanks!
I would like to know how to catch hybrids.and stripers consistently. They put up a good fight, I just luck into them; typically catch them by accident. I need to check the regs, sometimes there are different rules for each species. BTW SC, is doing a study on the striper in Clarks Hill, look for a tag on them, remove it send it back to the dnr with measurements and they send u a monetary reward. Some have an internal tracking device, so if ya keep one that has it they pay more, guess they can be reused. Not a good enough reason for me to keep one but thought someone would like the info.
OK will do.
Nobody been since mid April?
I went on the 15th and the 24th, they are hitting on watermelon lizards pretty good as long as your in the front of the boat and not the back...lol, but that's another story. Sorry for no report, just been having really bad time last few times I been out, and haven't really wanted to post about it.
Man three weeks of waiting and I got skunked Saturday. Had only one good hit pitching a jig in the weeds, that was a first for me, so that was cool. A lot of other fishermen where saying they had a hard time fishing too. Water temp around 70+. Carp where hitting up on top too, if you like carp.
Baits used:
Jigs
Square crank
Lipless crank
Other various cranks
Lizards
Worms
Buzz
Spinners
Spoons
Flukes
I was up there Weds 5/20. Put in at Scott's Ferry at sunrise and noticed the bass were schooling/feeding on several points between the dam and modoc. 5 fish came before 10am, 4 of them were on top water and 1 on a lipless crankbait. Largest was 6lb. I kept 5 that day; 4 out of the 5 were full of eggs. It will be a couple of weeks before I have another opportunity to get up there.
Got two nice ones yesterday off of a White Chartreuse Booyah Tandem 3/8 oz Spinnerbait with a white grub trailer. They were in the back of the creek channels in about 4 - 8 ft. water. Ran it low and slow as possible.
Back of a cove on 5inch Albino Fluke presentation slow dying bait fish. Evening catch. Picture doesn't do this fish justice, it was a good 3+lbs.
Beautiful warm morning, little drizzle, water temp 65. Used green and brown plastics, worms, lizards, and others. Caught several nice bass and one catfish. 1st and biggest of the day caught by my friend it was 4lbs.
Happy New Year!
Went out this afternoon, put in at Points West water was 336ft, and around 60 degrees, looked cleaner than last week. Started fishing the banks with lizards and worms working slow in about 3-8 foot water. Threw lizard in and sent a text, started taking up my slack and fish on! Fishing was pretty good, total caught today was 7 nice size bass.
Baits used:
BioSpawn brown worm with plasma tail - HOT!!!
Brushhog green lizard - worked well too.
Small green craw - worked.
Added pic of Point West boat dock, bring waders no matter where you go right now.
Above is this boat ramp at Points West, bring your waders!
My buddy was down there sat he said he only caught three we have only been there a few times. Are the flood gates still open? And what area would you suggest focusing on this time of year (not asking for any secret spots lol)? we put in at dorn. and what type of baits thanks for any input! We are fishing the bass pro big bass tournament down there in march and trying to get to know the lake a lil better.
Flood gates are still open and will be for awhile. You can call the Corps (#1-800-533-3478) to get the latest info on the dam.

Not sure if that is a typo or what, but if you meant dam, I would probably try to go a little more north than that, never had good fishing down there. Check websites and call ahead to spots to make sure their boat ramps are open too. Think Wildwood closed their ramps. With the weather being crazy, not sure how they are doing right now. But head towards the banks and work your way out to deeper water, white spinner bait, worms, lizards, jigs. Everything is underwater so a lot of "new" cover and structure for the bass is there. You can also check southernfishingreport.com for what they have been using. Good luck to you.
Dorn Fishing facility its on the SC side and thanks for the input
16JAN2016
Water 50'ish degrees, -3 from full pool, air high 50s to mid 60s, slight breeze.
Morning fishing was fair. Caught 3, 2 on 6" Watermelon Lizard in cove, 1 off a point with White/Chart Spinnerbait around Points West.
anyone trying to go out this Saturday?
I was thinking about it...but it depends if the weather gets colder, if not I will probably be out there.
I just ordered the raymarines dragonfly 7 pro and dragonfly 5 dvs. actious to see how the downvision works.
so anyone went out in the weather this weekend?
where the fish at?

If you check Southern Fishing Report (http://www.southernfishing.com/current-fishing-report.html) it will give you a idea of where they are at. They update their site a least weekly and what they are using to catch them.
Cold morning warmed up after 9am, caught this one around 10am with a worm, in a cover away from the wind, water temp 53.
headed to the lake weds morning! feels like it has been forever since i've been on the water.
My dad was excited to see me bringing him some fish, lol. I was reminded why I don't really like fishing early Spring. The bass are all over the place. The pattern seems to be to go up and down every bank, into every pocket and across every point. The top two fish were caught along the rocks at the dam. one was from a rocky point midlake, and the other were midway into a cove. I had 2 fish, on consecutive casts, jump and throw the bait in the very back of that same cove. they were each about the same size as the bottom two.
Nice catches rob! Yeah last weekend I went out and it was about the same, think the fish are confused with all the weather changes...lol.
Fishing is inconsistent right now.
I went yesterday and didn’t catch a thing (along with everyone else there. Two guys there said they were fishing the day before and tearing them up.
I went March 15 and March 17 and had lots of success.
True, my buddy had the week off and was averaging about 10 fish every day, went out yesterday before the storm and caught a few, one was 6.5lbs. It was very crowded out Friday and Saturday.
I went night fishing March 30 & 31 and caught a lot.
Using live bait, fishing off the bottom.
Fishing was slow until the sun went down, and really picked up both nights as a breeze started blowing creating chop.
Once night and chop started I could throw the bait, count to ten and would get a bite every time.
Caught many different species.
Good times
I fished all week and was having great luck until Friday.
I don't know what changed but rain moved in along with high winds when the bite slowed down.
I was lucky to catch one fish each day (Friday and Saturday)
Hopefully things return to normal soon.
I caught 7 stripe bass Wednesday and lost what would have been a personal best (making 8 if I had landed him) at the shore when my line broke and the bass took off with my favorite lure. I estimate the weight about 35lb striper caught on 10lb test Pline Floroclear. I should have dragged him to the shore instead of trying to pick up the line to hoist the fish over the sea wall
I fished Monday morning and caught only one striped bass. While I cant complain since he was a good size and gave me a good fight the bite seems to have slowed down.
It rained today so who knows how that will affect things.
BTW I have one lure that seems to work great and nothing else is working.
Last week when the bite was strong there were some guys out there not catching a thing while I was catching them left and right so I have definitely found what is working.
Anyone else having any luck out there?
(Bump from the abyss)
Has anybody been since 4/22/16?
Looking for recent tips on locations, baits, etc. I don't normally get to go fish the lake, but I have a borrowed boat. So far I have caught several, but have also been skunked several times
Been just a couple of times this year, now that it's hunting season, probably less likely of going. Sorry can't help out right now, but check out southernfishingreport.com
Ed has great reports on various lakes in our area.
Bassags, fish the 378 bridge in September.1/4 ounce traps and fluke jrs will catch schooling fish. Fish the Zoom mini lizards on the banks.Hope you get bit
