The Richmond Fishing Expo will be January 16, 17 and 18 at Richmond International Raceway.
The 2009 event is early in the month of Janaury so everyone mark your calendars.
Maybe a bunch of us can meet at the Expo on Saturday morning?
Just food for thought.
Sounds like fun, I'll try to clear my calendar, I missed it last year. What goes on at the expo?
Lots of boat dealers and other vendors selling their wares like plastics, hard baits, rods, reels, etc.
Last year they had some great presentations. I attended Ike's seminar and although I had heard the information previously, it was nice hearing it again and seeing Ike.
Hopefully we will have more vendors now that the show is under new management.
Come on over so we all can get together on day.
Simon, I went last year and it was FREAKING AWESOME! They have tons and tons of small businesses with some cool products. If you go, check out Grandt Rods and Dave's Tournament Tackle (they were there last year, I assume they will be there this year as well).
I'm not sure if I am going to be able to go yet but I sure hope I can.
Dominion Dan,
This is a command performance.
We expect you to be there.
Make plans now.
haha, I will try my best. Hopefully I'll be able to convince my roommate to take me home to his house in Ashland and we can make a weekend out of it. That's what we did last year. If it works out, I'll be sure to be part of a BR get together.
I have been a bit absent from this forum (actually all forums) lately, but I will probably head down to this with the whole family. Is there a website out there that has more details? I googled it and didn't see a home page for the expo. Any info would be great. Thanks for posting this.
Here is a link for the information about the show:
http://www.ncboatshows.com/show.php/eventId/3
www.ncboatshows.com/show.php/eventId/3
Kevin VanDam is one of the speakers.
Check out the site for others.
If you can't get this address t work, Google Richmond Fishing Expo and then look for the Expo on the right hand side of the page as it scrolls down.
I'll be there. We ought to get together.
I put it on the calendar for the 17th. I'm happy to load up the Expedition starting in Loudoun county and pick a few up on the way down. It's a good opportunity meet the fellow VA bass nuts.
you Richmond guys know any good places to eat down there?
The Bar-B-Que joint next to Greentop is good.........
Hey Sam, I may try to make it down there for that. I have not been doing much lately due to having surgery last week but I will touch base with Jason and see what he thinks about going to this.
QuoteThe Bar-B-Que joint next to Greentop is good.........
haha! I went there after I stopped at Green Top today. It was some pretty good BBQ
There are a lot of places to eat in Richmond.
Not by the Raceway, but other places.
Have some nice resturants in Ashland, too.
So everyone can hit the Expo, Green Top and the new BPS plus Gander Mountain.
The Bait Monkey is doing the happy dance. ;D
As the dates get closer we all will make plans to meet.
Sam, maybe we can get Glenn to make this thread a sticky in this forum.
BTW, here's the menu for the restaurant at the Richmond Bass Pro Shop. I went there today for the first time. It's a lot bigger and nicer than the one in Hampton.
That black and Blue Tuna sounds tasty!
Alright, it's a sticky. Thanks 5Bass and Glenn.
Phat Boys BBQ next to Green Top was smelling righteous yesterday. Something about BBQ on a cool fall day...
I was trying to find this thread....took me a while ;D
I would like to try and make it down. A day of shopping for fishing gear and some good BBQ, what more could one ask for?
Count me in. Excellent speaker list this year.
As long as the work schedule is okay you can count me in on being there. My dad and I travel to these things whenever we can.
I will be heading down there for the expo. It will be my first fishing expo. So I hope it will teach me more then I already know. I look forward to seeing many of the Va members that I have not yet met and looking forward seeing the members I have already had the privilege of meeting and fishing with.
So who all is going?
I am pretty much positive I will be there.
When are we all planning on meeting? I'd like to make plans to meet with you all because between the vendors, the speakers, BPS, Greentop, and lunch there is a LOT of stuff to do. Let me know some plans and we'll see for what and when we can meet up or maybe we can even all just stick together for most the day.
Hey guys, it is time to make plans to meet at the Richmond Fishing Expo.
Which date is best? Saturday the 17 or Sunday the 18?
I would like to set it up for Saturday the 17 around 1 or 2 PM, unless KVD or Alton Jones is having a seminar at that time.
So let me have your feed back so we can set up a time.
Now, for a place? I have no idea. But we can attack that problem next week.
Thanks for the feedback.
Happy New Year.
Saturday at 1 or 2 is best for me. I need to go to Bass Pro to spend a gift card but other than that I don't care where I end up...
It'll be a last minute decision for me. It all depends on if I land the new job and how the schedule works for that day. Weather also influences my decision. ( I hate the snowy mountains )
Too bad I can't find a cheap hotel room in Richmond or I'd come up a day early just to stinkpalm Micro.
QuoteToo bad I can't find a cheap hotel room in Richmond or I'd come up a day early just to stinkpalm Micro.
lmao
I guess I'll be missing it again this year. X-mas money was burning a hole in my pocket.
QuoteToo bad I can't find a cheap hotel room in Richmond or I'd come up a day early just to stinkpalm Micro.
Gee, that sounds almost good enough for me to treat you to a hotel room. :
BTW, I ate at Phat Boyz a couple of weeks ago. Frankly, I think it sucked. Service was horrible. The BBQ ribs my kid had were fatty and gristley. The hamburger I had was overcooked.
Wow, that sucks. Have you ever had the pulled pork? That's the only thing I've had there and it was good.
I'm only good for Saturday. I have to attend a deposition in Baltimore on Friday and I won't be home until late that night or possibly on Saturday AM. I don't know If I can attend the Expo itself, but I'd like to come up and have lunch with you guys, maybe hit Greentop.
Come on, Micro. My friend from Ashland backed out so I am going to have to drive from Harrisonburg that morning.....on the first weekend at school back from break.... ;D
I'm going to try. My wife has already given me permission - that's the most important thing. But frankly, I forgot this was coming up. I just spent my money at Tackle Warehouse on a new Zillion and a bunch of Ima Flits. I might have enough money for lunch, and to buy a Silver Buddy at Greentop. ;D

Yeah, but you will also get to meet up with some of us beltway dudes as well as just look around at all the fishing stuff. I could go to Greentop and the expo with no cash and still have an awesome day.

Hell, I'm still trying to find a decently priced hotel room for Sunday night that isn't in the hood.
QuoteHell, I'm still trying to find a decently priced hotel room for Sunday night that isn't in the hood.
Go ahead, stay in the hood. While you're there, see if you can grab me some hubcaps off a '85 Ford T-Bird.
Hard to find a place in Richmond that isn't in the hood. Even the times I've stayed on W. Broad resulted in some hairy moments.
If it is OK with everyone, how about meting at 1 PM at the Richmond Fishing Expo by the entrance inside the convention center.
There is usually a plastics vendor to the right as you walk in the door and we can meet in his area.
I will be wearing an LSU sweatshirt and a MegaStrike blue cap so you can't miss me.
This will give everyone time to visit Green Top, Bass Pro Shop and Gander Mountain in the morning or afternoon and also enjoy the Expo.
Hope to see as many guys as possible on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the Richmond Fishing Expo at the Richmond International Racetrack.

I just got back for setting up at the Expo. I walked thru all three buildings. The number of vendors seem to be less than last year.
Hey Wayne,
What booth are you working?
I was there today and the vendors filled th first two buildings and part fo the third, but not like the good ole days when all three buildings were packed.
Good turnout today. We had about 200+ at the KVD seminar, which was excellent.
Visited Green Top and picked up two Strike King Sexy Shad jerkbaits and some Guld! Nuclear Nellies. First time I have found them since Ike mentioned them in an article early last year.
I will be at the show from 9 to 12:30 and then meeting who ever shows up around 1 PM inside the convention center's entrance. Hope I can meet you.
Later,
Sam
Have fun at the expo guys, wish I had the free time to go.
Ron,
I brought my KVD book, Secretes of a Champion, for KVD to autograph after his seminar.
When I arrived at the Expo I went to the Host Services booth and was asking the guys about having my bass club guys come into the Expo earlier than 9 AM on Saturday, when in the rear of the Host Services area was KVD, himself.
So I asked him to autograph my book which he did.
What a great ambassador for bass fishing. He was a nice guy; we spoke for a few seconds; and he autographed my book.
He also caught his first bass of 2009 right in front of us. He was demonstrating one of his techniques when one of the bass took the lure and would not let go as he fished the Oklahoma Bass Tank. He caught a second one a few minutes later He told us that he did not want to catch any during his presentation. I wish I was that good.
Can't get better than that!!!!!
Sam, I was helping set up the booth with the Orange Couny Jr. BASS Federation Nation/4-H group in the first building. I will be helping to remove it after the show closes Sunday and assisting some other vendors with their packing up. I may spend some time with them Sat. and Sunday if needed. I did not go today with the anticipation of meeting you guys Sat. I did my window shopping last night and got one of the kids to grab some stuff of limited quantity for me before the show opened this morning. I will be there before the show starts Sat.
I have a vendor pass.
Have fun guys.
Thanks for the reminder PM Sam, But I just can't make it.
Next year!
This is a quote by a person on another fishing site:
" so the richmond show sucked
went in and only came out with 1 spike it marker for my troubles. but at least i didnt have to push and shove my way through the crowds."
I just got back from Baltimore. That drive sucks.
Are we still meeting at 1:00pm inside the entrance?
I will be there at that time. I am tall, about 6'4". I have brown hair that sticks up. I will be wearing a teal green ski jacket. Can't miss me.
Wayne,
I guess you make the show what you want it to be.
I had a good time and enjoyed seeing the new boats and meeting lots of vendors.
I also visited the Orange County High School booth. Nice setup and you all had a bunch of kids all over the place.
Even the girl on crutches was walking around.
Hope to see you today around 1 PM at the entrance when you walk into the convention center, itself.
I'm headed that way in about 5 minutes. See ya'll there.
I'm leaving in a few minutes for BPS to spend a gift card, then to Green Top and lunch before heading to the RIR at 1pm.

I saw that too, it was funny! I also liked how he kept pitching that spinnerbait into the crowd, trying to get someone in the audience to swat at it--to demonstrate the reaction bite concept. He's a very good, engaging public speaker. It was really cool to finally see him in person.
Just got back.
Managed to get some nice stuff (and practically molested by vendors trying to sell me their products). I'm going to post a pic of my new goodies after I take a nap. I woke up earlier this morning than I do for class during the week!
It was also nice to finally put some faces to some names from the site. I was glad to meet Rowland, Wayne, Sam, and Derek.
Drums, when were you there?
I just got back a little while ago. I brought my credit card, checkbook and a little cash. I don't know how many things I picked up with the intent to buy, then put it back knowing my wife would kill me. In the end, I bought some Jackall Mickey Jrs. And I talked the Daiwa rep out of one of his 2009 full-product catalogs.
I took a few pictures. Unfortunately, they didn't turn out all that well. Nevertheless, I was able to get a young lady (Derek's significant other)to snap a picture of part of Team Virginia....
Back row (L to R): Derek (Fishon84), Sam (Sam), Rowland (Micro), Wayne (Wayne P)
Front: Dan (Dominion Dan)
Here's some others. I took some pics of some Vagabond baits that were going for about $70. These have to be the most detailed baits I've ever seen. The blood on the baby bass was incredibly lifelike. The pther bass was modelled after abas with its tail bitten off. It looked incredible, too. (Squint your eyes)
And, I took a pic of the new Daiwa Pluton. This reel is built like a tank. It's cut out of s single billet of aluminum. It's got a lot of weight, but boy is it smooth.
The Daiwa rep told me me Daiwa will be introducing something like 20 (twenty) new reels at the next ICast, 17 of which will be Saltwater.
Hey it was nice meeting all you guys!
....
.... (I accidentally deleted my pic of the Pluton :-[)
Hey Micro,
Great meeting you and the other guys.
I hope everyone had a good time.
I wonder how you would get a $70 lure out of a tree???? ;D ;D ;D
Sorry I didn't make it to meet all of you today. I ended up having a bunch of 9 year olds over since it was my daughter's birthday party. The family and I will be heading down there tomorrow though. Looks like it should be a good trip.
QuoteI wonder how you would get a $70 lure out of a tree???? ;D ;D ;D
The Fire Department of course!
The crowd thinned out late this afternoon so I left the show a little early and just got home. It was good to meeting you guys.
I didn't get to meet any of you guys but I was there and I enjoyed the show. KVD was good but now I just need to learn to cast like he does! All in all I had a good time.
I thought it was cool that KVD was just out among everyone, walking around. Most of the times I saw him, he was alone and just browsing. Nobody was swamping him. Maybe that happened, but I didn't see it.
QuoteDrums, when were you there?
Hey Dan - I took the day off on Friday and went down with a buddy of Rob's and mine. It was nice to avoid the weekend crowds. Especially at Greentop, where it gets TIGHT.

good idea. Greentop was a MAD HOUSE on Saturday morning. Get anything good?
Made it there yesterday with a friend, shopping for a medium spinning Rod. I was back and forth between Daiwa, Surfside, and Daves. The Daiwa guys were super cool and knowledgeable, and very neutral as I was totally shopping 3 different rods. But Dan was right. I was also getting a lot of pressure from other vendors too. Ultimately went with a 6'6" Kistler from Daves Tournament Tackle. Real nice people there too. Watching Dave make a Spinner from just a bunch of parts was a treat. All in all a good time, for the short time I was there.
Sorry I missed you guys, a family commitment took me north instead. Instead of having fun at the show I got to spend the weekend in NJ in the snow.
I'm sorry I missed you guys on Saturday, I had intended on being there at 1PM. I made it as far south as BPS when I got a call from my son that his National Guard unit was put on alert for the inauguration, and he needed the car I was driving to get back to Norfolk to pick up his gear (he was visiting this weekend from college.)
I was there Friday afternoon and saw KVD, Steve Chaconas and Terry Carr. Bought a new Grandt rod to replace my favorite rod which snapped in two on Anna back in November. Bought a bunch of other stuff as well.

Watching the guys at Daves create a spinnerbait with ease right in front of you was impressive to watch.
I went to the Expo got a pic with KVD!! Real nice guy.
John,
You are da man!
Great pic.
Let's take it with us when we go fishing this summer so it will bring us some luck. ;D ;D ;D
Yea no kidding!! I am going to need all the luck I can get Sam. Since its getting warmer we will have to plan something soon, Hope everything is doing well.
