Just got my first boat and eager to get out on the water. Looking for some tips on good areas to go and how the fishing is going. Got a 14' jon boat and ready to go. Last year went to Fountain Head, Burke Lake and Motts Run Reservoir in Fredricksburg. Went out probably 6-7 times last summer with below ave results and even got skunked a couple times. I'll try to post on here from time to time on my luck and look forward to reading postings from other local fisherman.
Take care,
Bigbasskiller
hit the potomac creeks!
Here are a few creeks that you can use a jon boat in:
Powells Creek
Neabsco creek
Quantico Creek
Aquia Creek
chopsawamsick creek
lake anna
ruffes pond
abel lake= big bass pulled a 6 out of there
don't forget pohick as a jon boat creek i love fishing that place out of my jon, i've got a fiberglass rig and still opt for that sometimes over the bass boat
Thanks guys, great advice on the creeks. I'm going to get out there on Sunday. 6 pounder? Man that would be nice!
burke lake has plenty 6+lbs, got 2 in the past week. lake frederick is really good, pretty sure its nothing but florida strain. briery creek, chickohominy, newport news res, staunton, fairfax, brittle. Theres lots, check out vadgif they give all info on each lake and river, some boatable some not.

Come on man, you can't just throw out there that you caught a couple 6+ pound bass at Burke without showing pics...Any time someone does this i consider it a crime. Maybe they weren't really 6 pounds... :
Some of us have finals and live through proxy from others achievements at this time so help a brother out.

I caught about three 5+lbs from lake accotink yesterday.
;)
Here are just some from this year, a buddy of mine has alot more on his camera. These were all weighed on a mechanical scale that was calibrated at 2,4,6,8 lbs +-<1oz. The big girl 6/2 took a human size pee during pictures. Most came off plastics but the 5/1 which took a 3/8oz white wedge in about 8 foot of water.
Pics 1-5 = 4lb14oz,5lb1oz,5lb11oz,6lb2oz,6lb6oz
those last two look believable, but the first three are definitely not 4-5lbers. The last two are very nice fish.
Quotethose last two look believable, but the first three are definitely not 4-5lbers. The last two are very nice fish.
Agreed. That first one is definitely in the 2 lb range. The fact you feel the need to say you had you scale calibrated makes your story and pictures more suspect. Last two are nice though.
You need a new scale. None of those fish are the advertised weight. :
Nice fish.
QuoteYou need a new scale. None of those fish are the advertised weight. :
very true. None of those are even close. The biggest ones are probably between 3-4.5 pounds at most. Smallest one is around a pound and a half tops
Nice fish! I still haven't been able to pull a bass from burke so mad props to you!
QuoteYou need a new scale. None of those fish are the advertised weight. :
Those last two look like they could be over 4.5. The third to last saying it was 5.11 lb, kinda sums up the shannannigans. I'm not sayin your a liar, just saying your scale is very broken and you might have rounded up a few pounds on everyone of them. It actually is kinda comical now that i look at the weights you gave each of them.
This is why i just can not stand when someone throws out 6+ pound bass without evidence. Anyone can do that and it takes away from those here who catch big fish. Nevertheless, i'd take the last two 4 pounders any day. Good fishin
Most ridiculous claims I've seen in a long time.
Your 4-14 compared with my 4-3:
For reference....these are what a 6+ LMB looks like:
You could actually be dealing with a "bad scale," but I find posts like this disgraceful, and a real insult to guys out there actually catching trophy bass.
The 4-14 claim above is nearly inexcusable, and totally unrealistic.
I don't generally get into these weight posts, but this one takes the cake.
Dude, from here your best bet is to never log onto bigbasskiller again. Do yourself a favor and make a new name. Then re read this post and clown on yourself. Not sayin', jus' sayin'....
LoL you guys were harsh on him
I just said something so he is aware of the inaccuracy. Now he will probably get an electronic scale and get better at judging fish by eye and not look like he doesn't know what he's talking about later on.

Hah, priceless comment. Very funny. BigBassKiller, keep the pictures comin man. I enjoy lookin at them, we just are clownin on the exaggeration, that's all. And if you keep postin with that same scale, it will provide me a good laugh during my studies. JFranco was pretty harsh though...You might as well of slapped his mother and kicked his dog.
QuoteJFranco was pretty harsh though...You might as well of slapped his mother and kicked his dog.
Doh!
the three 4lb range fish i have weighed were bigger than those sixes
4.6 4.6 and 4.8 and they werent weighed on the same scale so they are probally off give or take a few ounces
Delusion.
What you aren't considering is BigBass is nine feet tall. Of course the fish look small. The other thing is Virginia bass are denser, thus heavier for size. Like the 7lber in my avatar.
7-pounds?
When I snapped that photo I thought she weighed 8-pounds. ;D ;D ;D
QuoteLoL you guys were harsh on him
I bet no one on here could even guess how much the fish in your avatar weighs Jake. I know cuz I weighed it and took the pic. By bigbasskillers standards it's a 6 pounder 8-)

is it 4.5lbs?
Anyways, I think the guy gets the point. back on topic!
Also, stop mixing up bigbasskiller and bigbasshunter! Killer is the OP and just looking for some info!

actually it was 2.5 pounds on my digital rapala scale. And I will say that even tho his fish werent as big as he says, he still caught some nice bass, bigger then any I have caught so far this year so he still gets props for that. What was this thread about again ?
i was gonna say 3lbs.

LOL, I kinda thought some1 would guess 4lbs... we should have let more ppl guess, but yea Steve is right, 2.5lbs certified.
where I am limited to fishing, I am always super happy to hook a 2lber and up. cant even imagine what a 6lb bass would fight like.
I agree though, the man caught some NICE fish and back on topic....

I wish I knew who she was so I could get more pics. Found it thru a bubbles search on the google machine. Long live the Trailer Park Boys
Im bout to head out now on the river. High tide for mattawoman is around noon or so. Hoping the water didnt get too cold last night. I scored a new vendetta spinning rod for 40 bux ! So imma go test it out ;D
hahahaha yall are very funny. Notice how all but one pic is taken with fish practically touching my torso, not at arms length like every other photo you see posted on here. Fish were weighted on 2 different scales, one digital rapala and one boga. The boga was calibrated with weights and is dead on with Lake Fredericks table scale. I know what was caught and the weights of each, if you dont believe thats cool no skin off my back. Got 4 citations last year out of Burke, 2 of which fish where under 24". 1 Citation out of frederick that was 9lbs2oz. Hate all you want!!!
Good Day Tight Lines
heres another from yesterday. 6lbs9oz
Very impressive! I'm guilty of the full arms length thing too . only pic I have of a fish next to my body was this one of a 4lbs. 5ozer.
and a boca grip! BALLER! too rich for my blood. regardless, nice work out there. Burke is a tough fishery.
Quoteheres another from yesterday. 6lbs9oz
Now your talkin Bigbasshunter! That is a real scale. And no matter how close or far away, no one is going to argue about how big that fish is. But we aren't stupid concerning the other dinks you posted. Great 6.9! That is a beautiful fish.

No one is hating. But your claims were totally bogus, thats all. The fish pic you just posted today tho, thats a different story. And I said earlier that I gave u props for catching quality fish esp from a place like burke lake. You obviously know what youre doing out there but your sense of size/weight is way off scale or no scale. I would say your latest pic is def a 6+ pounder. You're startin to come off a lil cocky tho. Simma down and relax.
That rapala scale is junk it has to have battery replace every outing. You can weight a fish change the battery and weight again and its different, no good. Boga grip wait till fish calms and you got your weight everytime within an oz. More power to you if you think its a good scale.

Proof of citations from burke? Pics?
Burke Citations list: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/varp/citations.asp?waterbody=burke+lake&year=2009
Fred Citations: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/varp/citations.asp?waterbody=lake+frederick&year=2009
So, which are yours?
$20 says he'll say he didn't register them! ;D
If he had caught 4 citation fish last year...he would have beat the total amount of registered citations in 3 years .... and have been short 1 fish with all 4 years combined...2006-2009

No certificates given because of some BS no verified scale/ruler. I have pics and all paper work and dgif reasoning at my house in New Kent. I will retrive next visit.
on a lighter note, anyone wanna hit the river with me ? My friend cant make it today and I wanna go out asap. I hate goin alone so someone hit me up. Theres hardly any wind out there and it's a nice day. Plus we wont get our tails kicked on the water with my 20 foot bassboat. Launching out of leesylvania most likely. Most likely we will catch at least a few quality bass if not several

Were you fishing with someone or alone? If you had someone with you they just need to sign the paperwork stating that they confirmed your measurement of the fish in question. You can only certify a fish by weight at VDGIF approved locations.
QuoteNo certificates given because of some BS no verified scale/ruler.
At some point the issue will become obvious to you. :-?
(Steve)-- Would love to hit the river with ya today, can you wait 5-6 hours for me to get there. And the girl with Bubbles is Elisha Cuthbert.
Yeah I caught a citation fish out of Bark Camp Lake last year but the VDGIF gave me some BS excuse like you only fished there once last year and didn't get a bite, total bullcrap!!!!

Hang on...I'll catch the next plane to Dulles and then rent a car. Should be there around 5pm, good for you?
Sorry, couldn't resist. It's still 60 odd days 'til bass opener here and I'm getting antsy.
We wouldn't have said anything if the weights were within reason...it really can be difficult to determine weight from a picture....but...dude, those first few aren't even close. It's not like all of the people who have commented are new at looking at fish photos. We know about the arm-length trick, we know that fish can look smaller in photos, but there is no way that those fish (especially the first few) are the weights you posted. That's the only reason I even said anything...
Take the "5-11" for example. Your fist is the same distance from the camera as the fish. Your gripping hand is much wider than the distance from the fish' mouth to it's gill plate. Fish over 3lbs must have a bigger head than that (except in rare occasions) much less a 5lb fish.
Is this a real BOGA grip you are using? Just wondering.

Hmmmmm.....
QuoteQuoteheres another from yesterday. 6lbs9ozHmmmmm.....
lol, is that the real number? i can't see! anyone that knows me can attest that i'm blind.
I'm just busting his chops ;D
Micro, that is the biggest chuckle I've gotten from this board in a long time. Kudos.
Ive got to hand it to him. This is the ballsiest overweight posting I have ever seen. Ever.
Since most of those fish are posted as being around 5 lbs, maybe we could all post pictures of fish that went between 4-12 and 5-4 on a scale...
BTW, when you put your thumb in a big bass's mouth, it should look like my avatar. Not a goldfish choking on a hot dog.
The bigger fish in my avatar went 5lb 1oz weighed in the boat right after it was caught. At weigh-in I think it weighed high 4's. That fish wouldn't think twice about eating his 4lb 14oz fish.
this fish is within an inch or two of my body. I think even you will agree that it is clearly bigger than your "4-14"
it weighed 3 even.
I'm going to start holding my fish behind my body.
Dan, i would put that bass around 7.2 lb give or take recent body excretions.
Dan's or the fish? ;D
QuoteDan's or the fish? ;D
i took a 7.2lb "excretion" about an hour ago. Thanks Kashi GoLean Crunch! ;D

~6lb ~6lb
6lb on the dot.

he's aiiite....
All but one were caught this year right?
I was just thinking that most of those fish were probably caught before a lot of guys even started fishing this season...
This is my new favorite thread.
Haha, I've just been having a good season ;D

As a new guy here, after reading this thread I just want to say that I plan to never, ever post the weight of a fish I've caught. Pics, maybe -- if I ever catch anything. But I'm just gonna let y'all guess at the weights. ;D
I am not even breaking out the scale unless I think its pushing that "Magic" number.
Double digits!!!
