As the title suggests. Weather looks as though it will be cooperating (50's).
I'm thinking Burke or the river. Anyone else getting out?
I'm going to hit a few local pit lakes.
I checked the 10 day forecast for lake anna and saw several days in the 60's and high 50's but it would be nice to get out on the potomac for a change. Tho, I havent heard about anyone doin well on the river lately.
Might try to hit up a few ponds around the area.
I was thinking we should date these threads and everyone should include a report once they do get out to fish that week. Just a suggestion. Sorry if you guys are already doing that! Don't follow BR as much as I used to.
Any who, I'll report back with where I went and what, if anything, I caught.
I normally add a date. I forgot this time.
Hey Soccr, just a heads up. I drive over the bridge on Burke Lake Road every day. 70 - 80% of the lake still remained covered in a layer of ice when I went by yesterday.
With the precip tonight depending on how warm we are maybe some of it melts, but if temps dip lower than 30 it may just be back to complete ice out on Burke.
Just lettin you know man, good luck wherever you decide to go.
Thanks for the heads up. Potomac it is!
I hit up 4mr yesterday, had good numbers but no size (1 might have gone 14inchs). However I did see one monster sneaking up on an 8 to 10 inch gizzard shad, sadly they swam outa view so I dont know if the bass made of meal of it. I tried tossing a jerk bait past and bringing it back to the fish but it never took its eyes off the shad.

It's cuz your boy Thai has been banned for the past week!
I really want to hit up the occoquan river this weekend in the kayak. ANy of you yakers down?

Whoa when/why did that happen?!
Saw a few guys fishing the river last weekend when I was out on a buddies boat with Thai. Fishing should be much better this weekend if the winds stay away. I had luck catching perch on a silver buddy and drop shots. Water temps last saturday were 37* by sunset.

I'm thinking of heading up north towards blue plains and the spoils.
Got to break out the jonny and get it running for the res tx's!! I'll be at fountainhead
I expect a full report w/ GPS coordinates!!! feel free to pm the info so others don't learn "our" secrets...

That has absolutely nothing to do with the lack of production on the river or anything even to do with this thread whatsoever. Best to stay on topic here.
Somewhat back on topic, Im about to start moving in the next few weeks so my potomac outings wont be as frequent this spring. Looks like I'll be fishing alot of lake anna for the next few months while I stay there and maybe the James and Chickahominy. Hopefully we will find our new house soon and it wont be too far from the river. My search for a house has been basically between stafford and the massaponax area. Living near Aquia creek would be sweet, that place is money all summer.
I think they were alluding to there were no reports because Thai got iced. The Potty was actually fishing well with the warming trend and probabl will be again once we get past tonight's cold snap. Jigs and ledges (with bigger strangely being better), with a little current as been $$, even when you're not near a warm discharge.
I was out on the Potomac on Saturday and Sunday. Caught fish but it was slow. The cold isn't the problem. I (and many of y'all, I'm sure) have done well out there in the cold. The problem is the muddy water clarity. Cold + muddy = lockjaw almost everywhere. When its that muddy, you have to get the bait right next to them to get a bite, because they are sluggish AND can't see too far.

where did you fish?
Occoquan River. Muddy. Not quite chocolate milk but close on Sunday.
I would love to get out. I have cabin fever really bad, but I'm flying out for a business trip. I wonder what kind of fishing they have in Dongguan China?
I was on the Occoquan River today. The water was still very muddy. I would try to find some clear water or stay home.

anyways, looks like I might be headin out to briery with the Kbf folk. Wish us luck! Got some invaluable info from another member I hope to utilize.
dan, did you go with carl? How was it?
good luck Andrew, sounds like there are quite a few guys going.
Yeah, I went with Carl. We struck out and ended up building a bird house in the shop.
I'll be going out!

You going out on the river huh? I think with all this runoff Burke might be a better choice if it's thawed out that is
It's looking that way. I'm dying to get out. I may head up north.
What's up north?
you tell me!
Dude I'm drawing a blank here.... :-/
pm.
I am going to be hitting Blue Plains/Spoils on Saturday and on Sunday I will be fishing in the Belle Haven/Hog Island/Broad Creek/Piscataway Creek area to see if I can find some fish that aren't relating to the warm water discharges. My boat is full Saturday but I have an open back deck on Sunday.
Hey rockville ill throw up some gas money if I can ride along on sunday
New Angler PM'd me first and if it is OK with his wife he is coming. If he can't then BankRobber can come along. I would like to take both but my 16'2" boat is not suitable for 3 people if I have to use the big motor (which will be required).
rats oh well thanks anyways but if he should back out im down
for the record, so I don't look like a ******. My wife is taking me to BPS, and then wants to fish somewhere down there. So we are going to hit up the James, if not for bass, then monster cats.

While you're out there , I'll be back at the lake tryin my luck once again. Seems like by the time I start to figure out these lake anna fish then it's gonna be time for me to start bringin my boat on the river again. Maybe we can go out the following weekend on the river ? I just might have my boat back up this way by then too. I'm gonna have to make a decision on if I should haul the boat back with me when I come back next monday. Just no way of knowing when snow will hit us again so I gotta play it safe. My boat is full next sunday and monday but if any other boaters wanna come out and try their luck on some spawning bass on the warm side of lake anna then contact me. Next monday its supposed to be 65 degrees 8-)

Rockville,
I'd be very interested to hear how you do on Sunday. My fishing partner will also be out on the river Sunday in some of the same places. Unfortunately I'll be out of town so I won't get to fish until the following weekend. I would love to hear an encouraging report.

New Angler - She is a keeper!
BankRobber - We are good to go! PM Sent!
Steve - Whenever you want to go just let me know! I have a tournament on the 20th and I am booked on the 28th but any other time just let me know!
NOVA - I will post a report for Saturday and Sunday, hopefully it is encouraging!

I meant his wife who is taking him to BPS then wants to fish on the James River. My wife will not consider going out on the water until it gets into the 70's and even then I consider myself very lucky that she will even fish with me at all!
ill be fishing kentucky lake this weekend for a collegiate tournament fished a tournament there last weekend and didnt do much good hopefully this warm weather will really turn on the bite.

rockville,
I'll be heading up towards you on Saturday. What time are you going?
Just got a call from one of my friends, he and his dad are going to Lake Anna Sunday morning bright and early. I will be tagging along. I have been waiting on this phone call since the last time I went with them in September. Not sure if the fish will be biting very well or not, but at this point I don't care very much.
;D

I just picked up two for NoVA CCA and two for Broad Run HS. That boy does good work but if he had to sell those house to make a living, he would go broke!

Quoterockville,I'll be heading up towards you on Saturday. What time are you going?
I plan on launching between 8-9 AM depending on the temperature. Low tide is at 6:30AM but I don't want to launch when the air temps are 31 degrees if I don't have to. I will finalize the launch time as we get closer to Saturday and the weather report firms up.
went out today. fist day in months and of course motor problems. I'm guess she's gummed up from sitting the last 3 months. managed 3 fish though. all dinks.
I fished today and struggled until the outgoing tide. No luck at blue plains as the best spot was taken and a few other boats tried to move-in and a fight nearly broke out. Got a nice smallie in the spoils but finally came into some numbers of good fish at 4MR on a shakey head. Unfortunately I broke a cable on the foot pedal of my trolling motor so I can't go out tomorrow and might not get out next weekend :-(

nice work and thanks 4 the link.
we should go on another thai sponsored adventure soon. :D
Sorry to hear bout your boat Aaron. Lemme know how that turns out plz. If your boat is down for a while and u wanna join me one day then lemme know.
I fished a lil today at lake anna and caught 3 small bass. My buddy caught 4 small ones and Chris(cmatthews) caught one but it was a 4 pounder. I lost two consecutive 4-5 pounders in maybe a 3 minute span that I fought for maybe 20 seconds each and both jumped in the air and spit the shakey head maybe 15 feet from the boat. Just my luck.
Seems like Lake Anna is startin to heat up tho. We all had tons of bites and alot of lost fish. The water temps were up on my end of the lake from 43 degrees two weeks ago to 58 degrees now and 67 degrees over by dy ke one. My buddy even had one that was a on a bed but it got off. That was the only bedding bass we saw. I listened to what others suggested for lake anna recently and caught nothing all day, then I switched to what I knew the last 2 hours and as usual started to get bites. Think Im gonna just follow my gut instinct from now on and fish what I have confidence in.
We also saw maybe 200-300 shad or herring, not sure what they were but they were all schooled up about 300 feet from my dock right where we launch. Tons and tons of them and they were huge like the ones u see at blue plains. Im glad we didnt snag any
yea it was a nice day on lake anna thanks again for everything steve and i wish i would of saved that picture of the fish so i could of posted it on here.
Came across this forum after searching for * fishing in google, so I decided to register as I'm reading a lot of good info. See 4MR a lot - is that a nickname for a lake? QuoteQuoteim going to the south chain..winter haven chain of lakesnever heard of that, where is it?
the chain is in winter haven florida ..it consist 2 sections.. a north chain and a south chain....it is 16 lakes total conected by canal systems.. some lakes at this time because of low water level is inpassible, the canals are dried up...
That's what I thought but I didn't know Florida was now part of Northern Virginia. ;D
Just kidding, I'm just bustin your balls.

Fished LHC today around 4:30 for about an hour... but no bites
QuoteFished LHC today around 4:30 for about an hour... but no bites
The water there is just too shallow and and the deeper parts by the bridge are too fast moving for the bass in the cold. I'm sure they dont want to be constantly swimming against current and expending energy. If you still have my number hit me up next time you go out I'll come out too

Yep, you can try by the bridge but I think you'll have best luck moving out as far from the bridge as possible, or corss the parkway and get back into the creek, again try to get as far from the bridge as possible, but they should start to stack up soon.

4MR = Four Mile Run. A virginia creek off the Potomac River. There is a sewage treatment plant that heats the water in this creek causing it to be a d**n good fishery. It is also easily accessible from shore.

Thanks Rockville, can't wait to check it out. Hopefully it won't rain Friday morning. I'm guessing you go off of commonwealth ave and park by the baseball fields?
Just don't eat fish from 4MR. In fact, be careful handling them. It is extremely polluted. The state has declared it "unsafe for fishing or swimming". The last time I fished there I found out the next day that there had been a sewage leak with an unknown source.
landed 6 keepers at blue plains today, lost on on a jerkbait at the boat and missed a few on shakeyhead. Fish it for around 45 minutes, wish we coulda fished longer at BP..
I fished Lake Anna yesterday and did ok. I caught 8 bass that were all between 1-2.5 pounds and my friend Brent caught 5. Caught almost everything pitching plastics to boathouses and docks. Saw hundreds more shad again and adult bass just cruising. There was even a few 3-4 pounders swimming around my boathouse.
The pattern I started to figure out was basically texas rigged 6" lizards/5" grubs , and 4" senkos on a zappu wacky jig head pitched underneath boats that were up on lifts and around the posts holding the docks up. Of course by the time we started concentrating on boathouses and docks, the sun was bout to go down. Caught a few in some creeks on tree laydowns too which was fun. Dy ke one was a waste of time which is a sign that the bass are moving back up into all the shallow areas. Lost a few nice ones but nothing to write home about. Lake Anna warm side is only gonna get better every day for the next 2-3 months till it gets hot and goes to crap. Those of you who arent gettin out there are missin out for sure
water temp in the Potomac is almost 50 already. It won't take very long for it to become the same temp as Anna.
Quotewater temp in the Potomac is almost 50 already. It won't take very long for it to become the same temp as Anna.
yup it was 48 yesterday on the main river

nice man, for 45min thats sick! I hear good things about BP, haven't been out there myself yet. I still got your number too Thai.
anyways, Me and my bro had the opportunity to fish the Ashburn Lakes for an hour yesterday, but we got no bites, and saw not 1 fish. it was around 4pm and sunny.
was it really high 40's??? that is so sweet.
Dan the potomac never reaches the same temps as the warm side at anna. Its 68-69 degrees there right now near dy ke one and 61-63 over on my part of the lake which is known as Glenn's cove. I hear what youre sayin tho. I'll have to start dividing my time between anna and the potomac. I actually like fishin anna more in some ways even tho its harder to catch big fish there then it is on the potomac. I'm startin to really like dock/boathouse fishing which you cannot do on the potomac very much. Totally different styles. But theres alot more ways to catch fish on anna too which is nice for someone like me who's tryin to develop a skill set in multiple styles/aspects. April should be pretty good on the potomac but theres also gonna be alot more boats out there then there ever is at anna. I guess as soon as the bite slows down at anna then its gonna be pretty much be potomac time all the time.
Last time I checked the potomac was littered with docks...... :-?
QuoteLast time I checked the potomac was littered with docks...... :-?
you obviously havnet fished lake anna then, theres no comparison. You can fish over a dozen boathouses in a 150 foot stretch. And they are everywhere non stop. I havent seen many boathouses on the potomac at all. Some docks here and there but few boathouses. You have to get the boat on plane to get from one to the next where as at anna u can stay on the trolling motor and never go on plane much like I did back in the cove where my house is. We went from boathouse to boathouse and didnt even get to try them all. Theres nowhere on the potomac like that.
From having fished both Anna (mid and upper) and the Potomac (Aquia, Mattawoman, Powell's, Neabsco, Occ Bay, etc) I'd say both have great cover and structure in their own ways.
If I want vegetation type fishing, mats, grass, piers, dock pilings, barges, ship wrecks I fish the Potomac. If I want target fishing around docks, boat houses, great structure fishing, etc I fish Anna. The only place I really see on the Potomac where you can have similar fishing to Anna (boat houses, numerous docks) would be Aquia Creek, and yes access to some places is a bit tougher than Anna which has mostly open water.
Just my two cents.

Quite refreshing to see someone post who speaks from experience. Educated opinions are hard to come by on here but you pretty much nailed it. I agree with what you said for sure.
There you go with these assumptions again...I've fished Anna more times last summer than I can count...it was our wakeboarding go to spot. And speaking from experiance a one trick pony is never going to pull in fish of size and numbers like what you are aiming for fishing dock slips and the dy kes....lake Anna is all about fishing submerged structure, old roads, underwater points and dropoffs. If you consider fishing the warm side a hard fishery than you're in for a surprise buddy. Get outside your comfort zone, it'll only make you a better fisherman in the long run.
QuoteDan the potomac never reaches the same temps as the warm side at anna. Its 68-69 degrees
?????, the Potomac will be 68 fairly soon...I mean the Potomac will be at temps that make bass active soon. If bass are active in both places, I don't see what the point in fishing Anna is. Nothing against Anna, the Potomac is just an awesome fishery. I'd rather fish the P'mac than any other lake in the state except for one or two. Anna is nice for the winter bass fix because it's warm but that's the only real advantage I see over anywhere else.
Every time I read any Bassin' or Bassmaster magazine the anglers there all refer to the Potomac river as one of the best rivers in the country for black bass (issues that discuss it). Not only east coast but in the U.S. We have a lot of pros from the area that call it home. I don't know if any of you know Kurt Dove but I read all the local fishing magazines as well, he is one of the anglers in the Bass Elite series and he hails from Fairfax. Last year at Amistad he placed in the top twelve and was in the running for a shot at the tourney after the first day. He says the Potomac is some of the best water he's EVER fished.
I think for the folks that have private access on Anna though they get to take advantage of an early season top water bite, early spawn, less pressured fish than the main lake due to cut off access and honestly a lot different type of lake than the main side. From what I hear as similar as they are, they fish much differently (obviously due to multiple factors like water temp, pressure, different structure, etc). I wouldn't mind being able to fish there but I think both places are a lot of fun regardless and both have the chance at a big fish.
If I had to choose I'd honestly take the Potomac but that is because I am still learning Anna. My dad and I found ALOT of productive water there last year, and we honestly feel alot more comfortable with how to fish there after having a couple conversations with Teddy Carr and Charlie Bowles down at BPS over the last couple seasons. Good guys with a lot of great info on both waters. I'm sure they will tell you both bodies of water are good in their own way too. And both have advantages and disadvantages at certain times of the year.
I would like Anna a lot more if it had grass like the potomac. Fishing grass is my favorite way to fish.
Thats the beauty of being where I am. Im 5 minutes from the potomac which I love plus leesylvania has the best quality ramps on the river. And when I wanna get away I can fish Anna, I might even be living there full time for a short period of time while we shop for another house. So I guess I'll be stuck fishing it for a while :-? I feel like for right now , fishing the lake is making me better, esp when it comes to my worm and jig game. I wanna continue to learn on how to improve my skills with soft plastics and presentations. I'm glad I spent as much time as I did on the lake this winter, wish I could have been there even more. I can't wait till the grass on the river gets real nice, I'll be out there as much as I can.
ive been doing well on the potomac pitching atube bait under boat docks
