with the mercury rising to record heats earlier than usual how are all my co virginia anglers changing up there style and tech to put the early heat on their side.
105 heat index in may what the heck!!!!!!!!!
fishing mornings & evenings to avoid that mid day heat and dead bite
i fished at 2 till 5 today. bad idea to avoid the heat but i did get 7 bass nothing big but they were hitting my ribbon-tail. i usually do like to hit morning or night in my sessions but didn't have the time today with this storm coming in.
yep night fishing and early mornings. that 5-10 period is great too
The afternoon to the twilight hours for me as well.
While hitting one of the local, small Dam lakes (from like 3 to 8) in NOVA (pm if you want to know) I had two really interesting firsts.......
Caught my first bass on a Northstar jig. I can not say how nice these jigs are and bought about 11 of them in one shot at a GREAT price. The picture was this little guy a few ounces shy of 3lbs jumped all over the jig as you can see when it hit the water
The second interesting thing was I was late to the party and bought a chartreuse and black square billed crank bait by strike king and sure enough the first cast with the lure I caught a fish...... shockingly KVD must know what he is talking about... HAHA
Boat repairs are done so will be back out on the water this weekend (fingers crossed) so back to fountainhead and pohick. I have a re-found respect for the guys casting from the shore.... these last couple weeks being land bound have reminded me how tough it can be.
Right now just mornings. Last year I try night fishing with no luck. Last week I try the Rappahannock river. Just three dinks on wacky. I did land a 3lb cat on a white chatterbait and 4lb bowfin on wacky as well. The bowfin is the biggest catch for me this year. AP Hill hasn't been good for me at all. I'm going to try inside the base with some ponds I never tried yet. I might be going out Sunday not sure where. If with brother possibly the Ni.

Where on the rappahannock do you fish? just wondering. Nice to hear you caught a bowfin, I love how hard they fight!

I put in at hopyard landing in King George since it's free. Hicks use to run $6, not sure now and Port Royal ramp I'm not sure what Buster's place charges? I would to love battle with an 8lb or above bowfin.
By the way welcome to the site. (I see you joined in April.)
good to know every one is out there hookin some fish. how about that cool down yesterday i wonder if that will affect the bite for this weekend. ill be going out on my secret lake tomorrow should be a beautiful day i hope.
hitting it early but its been turning out well for me ive got 3 over six in the last 3 weeks not bad !
i'll still go all throughout the day
I dont care how hot it is or what time it is, if the water is moving pretty good on the potomac then I'm fishing, plain and simple. This heat does especially suck tho when youre trying to do yard work, especially with over 11 acres to worry about
Me and my brother went to the Ni res.this past Sunday from 6:30 to about 3:00. I only manage land 3. 1 bass on a 3/8 white chatterbait, and 2 bass and rock bass I think on wacky. My brother had 2 pickerel lost 1 at boat hit my gold/black one knocker rattle trap and lost 1 bass in some trees right near the boat. I can't remember what worm he had Trigged. During the day I ended up losing my chatterbait and my brother lost my rattle trap and his spook. We also couldn't get nothing to hit in the lilies.
Frogging doesn't seem to be happening for this year. So far just 2 lil guys on the year.
I'm going to try and give Engineer pond a go tomorrow . It's located inside AP Hill base. I'm going to try some of the ponds I never tried a go.

Not bad? Think that would qualify as tearing it up.
This is my favorite time to fish !!!
The heat turns up and the sun beats down I fish shallow in the AM and PM and deep in the middle of the day.
I cought the one in my avitar and this one last Saturday plus a three pounder and a bunch of tots.

Sandy river???
thats a nice bass though
S13JOHN,
Thank you very much.
No it was not Sandy River they were both caught at Lake Anna on the public side.
The one in my avitar weighed in at 8'-4oz the other one is 6'-2oz.
I have yet to fish Anna, I recently got a jonboat and I wanna get out there as soon as my egg beater motor gets fixed, I've heard it can be tough but when it's on, it's on.
i destroyed my trolling motor last tournament pretty much and am about to get a new maxxum so i have no been able to fish at all in the past weeks.

I've been fishing AP Hill for last two years. You can't beat it for $20 a year. They must increase the fishing casue the new map I have have a load of new pond listings. 42 ponds, 4 lakes. I'm not sure how many are accessible by land or boat or even fishable. but last year map only listed 13 ponds and lakes. Lakes are the same from last year. You do have to do a background check this year.

I hope you get the chance to do so.
Anna was very tough for me the first couple of years and she still spanks me from time to time but it really is a lot of fun, Look me up when you have a chance and I will show you some fun spots if you want.
This motor of yours I noticed earlier that you stated you can not get the prop to enguage are you refering to not being able to put in gear?

Yeah the guy called me back today. The motor company is no longer in business, and I need new gears but the parts are impossible to find. Said the motor runs great it's just that my gears are all jacked up. So looks like I'll be selling for parts and looking for a new outboard. Luckily I have some cashed saved up so I'd be able to purchase another one soon. I just gotta find a used one that runs well and that isn't too expensive.
If you could throw me some pointers on Anna that would be great. I haven't fished any big lakes yet, as I haven't had a motor to do so. Anna is HUGE compared to anything I'm used to. I know people have caught some hogs out of there.
The guy that started this forum is actually my best friend and fishing buddy, we've been nailing them on our secret lake. I caught a 9lb and another friend of ours got at least an 8, we didn't scale that one.
I went out today and it seems like all the big fish were deeper cause all I could hook up on were dinks. A good 4lb shook my jig like it was nothing. Besides today there hadn't been a day where we haven't hooked into a 3lb fish. Feels good to know that what you're doing is working, ha at least it was. I blame the heat.

As far as your motor is concerned sorry to hear about that and I hope you are able to find a replacement soon.
If you go fishing at Anna soon the bigger ones are on the deeper flats now 10 to 25 feet. Below the 208 bridge and the bigger ones will soon be doing the same above the 208 bridge.
The water for the most part is clear in the lower end of the lake but still stained on the upper part.
Take some 6 to 11 inch lizzards with you in pumpkin seed with a chartreuse swim tail that will get you a few to start with make sure you Carolina rig them, bottom contact is going to be key with your weight.
This lake is going to take a LOT of patience since you have never fished a large lake before, There is a lot of water for these fish to roam around in.
Remember fishing in the heat of summer is no different (in my opinion) than fishing in the freezing cold it's slow and deeper water the only difference is their metabolism is working a little faster in the warmer water so they will be more likely to chase after your bait, keep yourself off of the banks about 20 yards in the heat of the day and a little closer during the AM and PM.
I would start at sturgeons creek across from the power plant and work your way down towards the dam and make sure you have all of your fishing licence and your equiptment you need in order, the VDGIF is out in force over there now.
I hope that helps, one final note, Be EXTREMELY careful over there most boaters do not know the first thing about operating their big expencive boats and they do not care about you at all the water will be rough from around 10 to 7 from all of the boat traffic.
I hope you and your best friend have a great day at the lake, Good luck and be safe!!

I greatly appreciate the info, not a lot of people are willing to give that much info on the lake they like to fish. I hope I can find a motor soon and get out there. Do you ever fish any tournaments at Anna?

This is going to be everywhere now with there already being a major accident this year in the state coupled with how many there were last year.

Well it's a pretty good size lake and I want you to have fun besides I didn't give up all that much info.
Anna she can be pretty tricky but I can too and trust me I have had my butt handed to me a lot over there when I first started going and no one would help me so I know how it feels.
Like I said that should get you started catching fish I will leave it up to you to establish your own patterns and such just keep in mind to start where I told you to and it should be a pretty good day for ya.
No I do not fish tournaments over there as of yet but I wouldn't mind hooking up with someone although a buddy of mine and I have been wanting to give it a go we have yet to get together on one.
Best of luck to you and again be safe!!

Either I have not been keeping up with the news or I missed hearing about all of these accidents I know of only a couple, one last year that cost an officer his life.
However I am glad they are there and hopefully they will continue to be there, some of these people who drive these big boats are off their rockers!!!

There was another high profile case last year involving a teacher.
This year there was the accident with someone running head on into a bulkhead at the mouth of the Rappahanock.
Most all have involved alcohol in some way.
I did see someone pulled on the James last weekend right outside of Osbourne. Not sure what for.
I may enjoy an ice cold adult beverage when wrapping up my day of fishing but thats it. Hopefully in the long run they are making things safe for those of us who are ultimately trying to do the right thing.

WOW,
Cuddo's to you for doing the right thing, Just like you I do enjoy my BUD but it goes nowhere near the boat.
Thanks for the info !!!

The lake I'm fishing at the water level has gone down a good 4ft. Earlier in the season just after spawn the water was up and we were nailing big bass. Now we still catch a good sized fish almost every time we go out but not nearly as much as before.
Where should I be looking to locate these big fish again? Nitro you said fishing 20 yards offshore for Anna would that be a good idea to try in the lake I'm fishing?

I am not familure with your lake but the trouble with most fishermen today is they will not move off of the banks which is a good thing at times but as the water temp rises the bigger bass tend to also move deeper not at a fast rate mind you because it takes a long time for the fish to adjust to different depths.
So keep an open mind and start using your tools and think about what a lot of these people have to offer you in here.
Start fishing deeper and slower and you should be able to have some fun.
Also if I may suggest you may want to read the articals that are part of this forum, they contain a load of info that can really help you along the way.
Good luck and be safe !!!
I know that is something I've been trying to pick up on, fishing deep. I've been reading some articles on here but still can't understand the concept. I think the only time I caught anything deep I was trolling through with my rattle trap.
I'm with you endless. I pretty much give up during late July into August and stick to doing lazy fishing for catfish. I can't seem to figure out deep structure.

I still go and try my luck best I can I even try some deep stumps with no luck there. I can't determind what's a channel to just the natural depth of a lake. And I'm trying all I can to understand my depth finder. Neither one sure isn't easy, lol.

Fishing deep or deeper than you are used to requires patience and focus on your part.
You may have already had big fish take your lure and didn't even know it they are sooooo soft when big ones pick up your lure and getting used to that feeling takes time.
For me the best thing I can tell you is keep reading and keep trying because once you get a couple you won't regret it.
Good luck and be safe!!!
Learn what the Thermocline is and how to determine where it is.
Just that will reduce the amount of water and the depths you should be looking for bass.
An example of how some approach fishing was yesterday at Briery Creek. I had loaded the boat on the trailer around 7PM and a guy came in with his wife to start fishing. He asked me how was the fishing, I said "kind of slow" but the thermocline is forming at about the 15' level and all the bass I caught were in the 7'-12' range. I had caught 51 bass and showed him what I had used. His reply, "I'm gonna be fishing deeper than that". He had a small jon boat with electric motor and no electronics.
As I was leaving, I saw him fishing next the the first trees out from the ramp.
51 bass and the fishin is slow I need to focus more attention on finding fish and understanding why they are where they are at any given time. Thats one of the things that seperates the guys who really fish and those who aimlessly cast and beat the bank.

endless, the Humminbirds will show the thermocline with just the default sensitivity settings. Actually in most cases it shows too well and the 2D sensitivity has to be lowered to get the best image of its location in the clutter of plankton and temperature change.

Thanks Wayne. I'm still trying to get an ideal of this finder of mine. When the last time I've been to Huntingrun I was told it might been to early for it. I didn't see one for the Ni res when I went two weeks ago. I want to hit lake Orange I think there would be a great place to learn fishing deep. You been to the Orange lately?? How is the fishing there? Another question does a river like the Rappahannock have a Thermocline?

When the water temp gets to around 85 degrees and stays that way, the thermocline will start. Typically mid to late June is when you seen it. Lake Orange is not what I call "deep" but it does get a thermocline in the summer (very easy to fish there then). No, I haven't been to Orange since June 2009-there are too many good places to fish. No free flowing rivers around here that I know of get it. Lakes that are on small rivers/creeks get it due to the minimal water flow.
I saved this with a Martix 97 a couple of years ago at Hunting Run in the summer (note sensitivity setting to reduce the clutter)

This is with the 798ci SI last summer at Hunting Run with the default setting (10). Notice where the fish are-----
You know speaking of thermoclines, I have never been able to pick that up on mine, well at least not like the instruction manual says to adjust for it.
I have a Lowrance X 96 could it be my transducer ?

Thanks again Wayne. I'm going to keep a look out for it. The red is thermocline right? Why does run up hill like? What's the blue/yellow spot above it?

Is that a fish above the thermocline suspended off the drop? The rest of the arches fishes to? I can still can't get arches either. Could it be my transducer is installed at the back of boat like instructed? Also what does it mean when you get two bottom readings?
First of all the thermocline a level of water that has a temp change of about 1 degree per foot of depth--that is level across the body of water unless wind has made it tilt some.
The bottom is not exactly a drop, it is the bottom shape of that part of the lake. All the arches are fish (big ones and little ones)
I caught two of the bass that are behind the water temperature readout. "It's so easy a cave man can do it"
The multi-bottoms are echos due to the sensitivity setting. That is when you can see good detail of small stuff in the water. Don't kill that with any noise or clairty settings. The sensitivity can be set lower and the thermocline won't even show as well as small fish. With the new units having the Switchfire 2D, the Clear setting will adjust the sensitivity some for best performance.
Any brand of sonar will show this kind of stuff if the settings are adjusted. I used to have a Lowrance X70-A that was great for showing arches and thermoclines with just the automatic setting for sensitivity. You have to be where there is a thermocline to see one--it doesn't happen all year and on every body of water.
I've been curious to try out Huntingrun is it any good? I've heard it's good but I've also heard it's slow.

How good it is depends on who is doing the fishing. I have caught over 100 bass in a day there lots of times and at the same time others don't even get a hit. If I catch less than 50 bass there, it is slow day for me. The last time I fished there was slow (42 bass).
The lake is overpopulated with small bass. It has some nice ones also, many over 7#. This time of year where I see most fishing there, the fish are under the boat or behind them. Buy the end of this month, 50-100 bass a day should be quite easy. The submerged vegetation is the key pattern.

Wayne P. I fish Anna A lot and I know they are there usually this time of year around dike 3 especially and I have picked them up in the past but I was wondering if I should upgrade to a more modern sonar any suggestions would be a big help.

I have learned a ton from guy's like Sam & Wayne and I am now catching a LOT more quality fish but still not as many fish as them...lol...It just gets me excited to know that they are here helping us to be better.

My advice would be first if can find someone in the county with a launch pass already. If I remember correctly the year pass is still $28 for non-residents for Huntingrun and Ni(not sure of individual pass)but now you have to pay a launch fee on the year $40. Am I correct Wayne P? If not buying pass for year there to fish it's $7 each visit but I think you still have to pay your launch fee? If not have a boat they do have boats for rent but only 2 I think have a live well and those go quick.
I know when I go to either I go with my brother so I don't pay the launch fees just my $7 for the day. My brother lives on Plank rd. Maybe if want to hook up with him. He's a member here too. Pm Punkinseedfyretailz.
If do ever go Go early cause if your anything like me and if the older man still works there I can talk to him for hours. Very friendly guy and don't be surprise seeing him later in the day on the water. Me and him talk about you Wayne all the time. Does he still work there? Do you have to pay the launch fee just to launch a boat? If so do they still charge the $3 each time visit?
Dhami013 also if your looking for some nice places to fish and if your background is clean AP Hill is only $20 for the year and not even 30 minutes from Fredericksburg depending on where at you are. They have if I counted right on my new map 42 ponds and 4 lakes. I'm not sure if what pond are assessable to fish or hold fish cause the last year map only listed 12 ponds I think. Lakes the same number from last year. The best I did there was two years ago I pulled out a 3.5lber from Beaverdam pond, 4lb bowfin from Boyou off of rt 2, and last year a 3.12 from Smoot's pond. I probably had another 3 to 4 lb bowfin at White's lake. If ever come there have a frog and a jig rod ready. Tons of lilies and submerge trees. I'm not sure if you can still pay $5 just for the day.

Yes, you have to pay to launch a boat, don't remember the daily fee though. The yearly non-resident launch fee is $40, that is what I get. It was $35 last year. I don't have to buy the access permit (getting old has its advantages). Yes, the short older guy still works there (forget his name). I taught him the weedless wacky rig a few years ago.

Personally unless it is Winter to spawn, I don't fish East of the splits unless I am fishing at a marina that holds tournaments (lots of weigh-in hold-overs). I have the best catching near the river channels and willow grass uplake after the spawn.
As far as electronics, you can't have too much information. The new stuff is outstanding for helping you eliminate a lot of water without even making a cast. I prefer to fish where the fish are and just figure out how to catch them.

I never paid a launch fee last year just my yearly pass for Hunting run and Ni. Unless that was it I just remember each time last year I paid $3 to launch each visit. All the new prices scared me this year. For the old man I still never got his name. The new guy working over at the Ni Res is cool too. That man loves to joke. Sadly though I only been to each once this year.
This was the sign last year for the rates:

Yea I never bought the seasonal boat launch just my access for the year. I thought I paid $28 last year must been $25.
I must of paid $28. $25 plus $3 for launch.
But another question Wayne P, have you fished Diascond lately or anyone else can tell me how it's doing. I only been once this year(first time) and got skunked. Beginning of spring and water was cold.

I went out to lake chickahominy saturday and got there about 4 in the afternoon, I went straight to some brush sticking up where it drops off and pulled a 6 pounder out flipping a black/blue 3/8 ounce jig. After that I caught one more little one on a bubble gum fluke by the lillies and then a huge storm rolled in and chased me off the water. I think they are hanging on to deep cover about now. Use jigs and creature baits.

Well...I was going to lake Anna for the week but a work buddy invited me to go to Kerr lake the third weekend in july.
So needless to say I have never been there either and have been wanting to go for a really long time so I am just going to stay and work around the house and save the money for that trip.
Still may go to Anna for a day, Not real sure yet...I just can't get enough of that lake for some reason lol.
Anyway you are welcome and Thanx for the well wishe's and I will look forward to scheduling a day to go fishing with ya at Briery Creek.

Yep, sure is, it is on Rt.701 about 1 mile from the Rt. 701 ramp. It is new and is part of the property that has the three houses for rent--very nice for the price.

Is that one pond a small one? Those small ponds that I can walk around I love burning small chatterbaits through them since the ones I fish is fill with only grass and one lil beaver d**n. I'm hoping to have a good turn out Sunday. Me and brother going to Hunting run. Then over the week I'm going to the Mattaponi river. People swear their is massive bowfins running through there. It's a small river that you can cast completely across. It's filled with lilies also so I can't wait to troll through and frog. I don't have to worry about the river opening up wider since that's a good good ways away.
But far as fishing that river I only caught two dink, Three small pickerels in the winter and bunch of brim, all this from land. I'm going to take my boat. I wish I'd kept my small jonboat. AP Hill has some small ponds that has no ramp and can't access them by land in the woods. I'm not about to walk through the woods in a military base but I'm sure these ponds are not being fish.
