fishing user avatartopwaterrob reply :

OK so I hit a few major haunts over the weekend.  Lox on Thursday, windy as heck and the water was moving fast.  couldn't get any decent bites.  Lake Okeechobee Sunday morning.  Early morning bite only, once the sun was up, the bite was gone. (did manage a few decent ones there). Holiday Park today.  Don't even get me started...  The water is in the parking lot and is moving so fast its riduculous.  Long story short, I think I'll stay indoors for awhile....  Anyone else had any luck?

Yeah, topwaterrob, Holiday is underwater, it will be months before it even gets decent. I keep saying I am done for the summer on each outing, and I am at it again the next day. For example today, I will be out there working on a technique that has been around for eons and I just read about it. If it works I will post pics , if it doesn't , well you know the rest.

I cracked the code at Lox this weekend.  Had two small fish at 9:00AM Saturday when I finally figured it out.  By 1:00PM I had +40 fish, six over 4lb and two over 5lb.  I fished Sunday from 1:00PM until 4:30 and had +20fish, with two 5lb and one 4lb.

Of course, this was after filming out there with Captain Shane last week and I couldn't get anything going with the cameras running... :Idontknow:

Saltwater fishing has been been sub standard since January in our part of Florida.  From recreational fishermen to charter captains and guides to commercial fishermen all have one comment........too much freshwater coming out of the inlets from the spillways.  The wind has been funny and the water has had an unusual color to it.   We get a decent day every now and then, but this time of the year it should be good everyday and it isn't.  On the piers and jetties a lot of blue runners are being caught, up to about 2 lbs and being in the jack family they offer a nice fight on light tackle, live bait is the key, I'm strictly an arti user.  The kayakers are getting some decent bonita and amberjacks jigging butterflys off wrecks, the drift boats mainly are catching yellowtail snapper, not to be confused with Pacific yellowtail which are related to greater and lesser amberjack, crevalles, trevally, banded rudderfish, etc.

What was the code Mike if you do not mind sharing?

fishing user avatarshallow thinker reply :

The topwater of your choice has been working pretty well in Lox.  Some days are better than others.  Flukes and senkos will usually catch better numbers of small fish.

fishing user avatarOrpssab reply :

Summer time fishing everywhere is slow....Just returned from the Pompono/Deerfield area and now back home here in South Carolina. Couldn't get up to Lox but spent a week fishing local canals and area res lakes. I managed to fish every day but started early 7AM and got off the water by 10:30 AM. Just too hot. Caught over 50 bass and a handfull of snakeheads. And as with other posts, most of the fish were active early. Small bass schooling into bait fish on the bank. It seemed after that was over the only bass I could catch were deep in the center of the canal using 10" T-rigged worms and the bite was slow. If you could stand the heat, you could still catch snakeheads shallow. I never drank so much water in my life! But still enjoyed the trip.

fishing user avatarpiscicidal reply :

I'm going to keep this one on the down low a little bit.  I think this pattern could go on for awhile and I don't see a lot of people doing it (correctly!)

I will tell you my approach out there this time of year...I'll target active/feeding fish in the morning (until about 8:30) and after that I am going for reaction bites.   The key for me is to first see what the current is doing.  I'll check and see where they are pumping out and where they are pumping in...based on this (and wind direction) you can usually figure out the current. Then it's a matter of trying to figure out what the fish are eating and how the current (as well as water depth and clarity) might be affecting the food source.  Those fish move around a lot and they are following the bait.

You guys can figure out the rest...I'm not the best fisherman out there (by a long shot) and I got it.  Usually I'll get 1 or 2 pieces of the puzzle figured out and have a fair-to-decent day. Right now, I've got the whole thing.  It doesn't happen often.  The fun part is trying to figure it out, anyway.   Catching is secondary to the process, IMO.   If I wanted to go crank in fish, I'd fish salt water with live bait.

Freshies I take it, caught a nice tarpon this morning at the inlet.

BTW, I broke my arbor reel.  I was doing a total strip down, had it for about 18 months never been cleaned and screwed up the anti reverse.  If ain't broke don't fix it, the reel was working perfect, lol.

Went DSG to buy a ci4, in hind site I was glad they were out, I didn't really want it, told the guy give me a 5000fj for $79, he didn't bite, lol.

Snook not sure if you have an Academy by you but if they have ever carried that reel you can take it to them they will exchange it for the same or they will give you the total cost in store credit

appreciate the info, no academy around here.  I've got a spheros I'm not using,  I'll use that until I get the urge to buy something.  It's probably an easy fix, I may take it in someplace, isn't worth the cost of shipping it back and forth.

The fjs were also discounted in many stores as well. The plantation store had some 5ks but are out now, maybe WPB will follow suit soon.

Persistence pays off. I have been striking out for days, I just came back from a canal by my house. I fished  for about 1/2 hour, and was fortunate enough to land and release a bass weighing in at 6lb 10oz. When will I catch another fish? I do not know. But I do know,  if I do not try, I will definitely not catch a thing.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

They had plenty of 5000 fjs on Congress, reel isn't worth $209. to me, especially if I don't really need one. I'd buy one at a good discount and just put it away.

We are seeing that green algae on the outgoing tide, fishing is no where like it should be this time of year.  With mostly a s/e wind and s/e surf, which normally is n/e surf more seaweed is coming in makes fishing a bit tougher.

A tip for anyone fishing the surf, be acutely aware of seaweed, every time you clean it off your lure grit and sand is left on your hand, be careful not to get it on your reel.

fishing user avatarjuan_LMB reply :

OK guys, I'm going to share a brief moment of my experience from last night. To the OP, I'm not trying to jack your thread. Just found the first "south Florida" thread to post share this on instead of starting a brand new one.

I haven't been fishing in about a month or two because it's so stinking hot and fish are just NOT BITING! I hate standing on a bank fishing canals and not getting bites. I know they're in the canals because I'll see them swimming shallow at times. Once I was throwing a crank bait and as the lure approached the bank, I saw a decent 3lb'er tailing it. He never did bite; I believe if the canal was 10 feet wider, he would've took it. ANYWAY, moving on to last night. My wife ticked me off by interrupting my nap when I had JUST dozed off...wanting to use my truck to go pick up this chair her friend was giving her. So i eventually get up and come to find out, this female lives right by this piece of canal I fish in. I never leave take my poles or tackle box out of my truck so I thought...hmm, she want to get me out then I'm going to go try and catch a fish tonight. On our way back home, I stopped and to remind you this is where I caught my first 5lb'er +. Wasn't getting any bites so I finally got my worm in this spot I had been aiming for (3rd and 4th cast). The 4th cast, I was working the worm back and just knew I was about to get bit...never did. So I said f**k it and started to reel the worm in, which caused the worm to float right on top of the water...BAM!! This nice 3lb fish destroyed that worm hahaha! I've never experienced a top water bite and let me tell you, that was very interesting. I actually jumped because the splash was so big and I wasn't expecting it. I believe that's the trick, fishing at night (not the evening) and throwing top water swim baits. That moves me to this question...what are some good top water, swimming lures you guys use? I'm use to fishing with jigs and worms so top water would be new to me.

fishing user avatarBassinLou reply :

Oh boy! You have been infected by the top water bug. LOL. Congrats on your over night adventure. There are several topwater baits you can use especially at night. In no particular order.... Yeah right! Who am I kidding. Hollow body frog of course being first, (Now... in no particular order) buzz baits, swimbaits(gambler EZ swimmer), spooks, u-vibe worms, Zoom horny toads. The list will continue. Those few baits I mentioned will keep you busy. Good Luck. The next few days should be interesting with the weather systems. The rain may cool off the water perking up the fish's moods and also cause some water to move.

The water pressure is why the fish aren't biting I think and the hurricane that's on the way isn't going to make fishing any easier

I catch all mine early so it's frustrating. I got that fat 18" the other day and then dropped the big girl taking the hook out. I had two days where I caught a few. My thing is early summer I was catching a lot even if they were under 18" now seems like I catch none or just a few and the occasional big one. I like catching numbers of fish even if they aren't huge so it's just frustrating.

On top of that I miss so many fish. If Dave was on this site he could back me on that lol I am the king of missing the hook set on my frogs

fishing user avatarjuan_LMB reply :

Guys, let me tell you...I went fishing last night in the canal that runs around my community and SPLASH SPLASH SPLASH! OOHHHH how much I love fishing top water now lol. I was fishing horny toad and a fluke.

I done a little research before I went out fishing to figure out how to fish those little guys. Horny toads are definitely different when it comes to hook sets; not like a worm. I missed about 3 fish because the hook set is so different. Come to find out, you have to slam the hook into the fish or he'll get away. I end up pulling 1-2 out with it but like I said missed about 3.

My new favorite top water/swim lure...THE FLUKKEE!! Guys, I'ma just put it like this. The fish were crushing my fluke so hard, 3 of them I had to take a knee to get the hook out. We had ourselves a little operating room on the side of the canal. One had the hook in his throat...IN his throat. I seriously though I might had to cut it because it was hooked (looped) in his throat. Blood would puddle up and he would open his throat to swallow it. Finally got the hook out but after the poor fish took off, he swimmed back to me; floated on the edge for about 20mons. I think he was telling me to take him out of the misery. Too bad I didn't have a net or anywhere to throw his remains. The other two, one had it in the top of his throat but not bad and the other wasnt as bad neither. Had to cut a piece of his skin to release the hook. The rest boys, perfect hook sets. If you're not fishing flukes and toads , go out and ****** up a pack but hopefully you can make it to some water at night. I was out from 10-30-11ish (pm) till 1-130 this morning.

I bought a live target frog but unfortunately they didnt want him last night. I guess they were either very active and wanted fast stuff or the water was too open (no leaves, grass, pads) to fool them with a popping frog. Thanks for reading my essay btw. I just like sharing my experiences since I'm finally catching LMB. Oh yea, last night catches were nice size. They got bigger the more I threw the fluke haha. I think the smallest was 2lbs and biggest 3-3.5

fishing user avatarjuan_LMB reply :

Juan, I am glad you are having success with your night fishing. There are definitely learning curves that come with the different techniques. The experience will come with time. As far as the flukes what was the hook size you were using if you do not mind me asking? To have them get so deep hooked makes it sound like either the hook was small, or you were detecting them too late.

I fish with the bass pro shops magna hooks, size 5/0. I have no clue with the hook is going so deep in their mouth. I figured they were just coming up and trying to inhale the fluke...bad news, that's a hook haha. With my flukes, I never feel the bite. I would try and give it another twitch, I'll feel the weight of a fish, and just pull up. I don't even set the hook because they pretty much hook themselves.

just now seeing this; I'm in Lauderhill. Yes, last night was a full moon and they loved my fluke. Was going to give the jitter bug another swing since I've yet to get a bite on it but why change lures when they are killing the fluke. When I searched the Pea's yesterday, I saw where they go for fast moving lures. Cranks, top water, jerks, poppers, and etc. anything fast but it can't be plastic. i had a nice 2-3lb Pea hanging underneath my brush hog. didn't take it. then i switched to the fluke, didn't take it haha.

Last night, I would throw the fluke across the canal, let it sink for 3-5secs, check the line to see if i had a bite. no bite, start jerking it across. when i saw the fluke getting close I would let it sink..jerk...sink...jerk. Then I would give it some slack and let it hang right on the edge of the canal, making sure it was deep in the water and twitch my rode up and down while I text on my phone hahaha. I would feel the my line being pulled, try to shake my pole and feel weight. bad news delivered to the lip. Oh yea, I had perfect hook sets last night by the way hahaha

thanks AK. fluke is my primary right now. I haven't had much luck with my worms, lizards, or brush hogs. I've ran out of scent, that should be delivered by Friday so hopefully I can be more versatile and use different plastics. Another reason is because the bottom of these canals are full of grass. its so bad it look like trees and bushes are in there. we need some rain because I want the canal to come up higher. Can fish see or find my deep sinking plastics through all that crap in there? I throw Yum D2 Dingers weightless and my lizards with a weight (don't remember how much they weigh. they're light). What do you guys think, continue keeping the lure above the "trees and bushes"? haha

Give ya a little peacock tip, as well as bass, mayans, oscars, bluegils,  moonfish, jacks, blue runners, spanish and cero mackerel, snook and the list doesn't end...........crappie jig.  Without a doubt one of the most prolific baits out there and at .15 a piece what a bargain to catch 20 or more fish in a short outing.  I up it a tad and use a bullet head pompano jig with a chrome head, either 1/4 or 1/2 oz, by Bomber.  I've been catching about 15 runners each day using them, if you don't think a blue runner gives a fight I suggest you try one out, great fun.

Juan nice pics, and fish. Looks like you have them dialed in at that canal. What color of Fluke was that? Looks like it was Albino or light in color. As far as changing baits, if it's not broken why fix it? Stick with what works. If the pattern changes then you change. You should have joined our friendly contest. You would be one of the contenders with those catches.

I agree Lou he would definitely be in contention in our little tournament

It's white pearl w/chartreuse tail. haha, exactly what I was thinking...if its not broken why fix it? If they're killing the fluke, why change it out? I'm just now hearing about this contest. I'll jump into the next one and see what I can do hahaha. How do it work?

Pretty simple Juan. Follow us on the bragging rights thread, its on this same forum page under local waters. You fish the whole month, and record your top 5 fish. We are recording by length. So make sure you have something to measure your fish with. Weights are also mentioned if she is a big girl. At the end of the month the individual with longest 5 fish is king of the hill for that month. We keep it friendly, and educational. You have to provide, general location (not the actual spot if you don't want to), what baits you used and how, and time of the day. Take a picture, and post. Big fish of the month is also recognized. We would love to have you on board. Any question just ask, and we will be more than happy to guide you.

I'm still fishing Loxahatchee...Here's a video I did with Captain Shane at Lox the first week of August.  Six days after this was filmed was when I "broke the code" out there.  Starting that second weekend of August, every trip I have made has been to Lox and my five biggest have broken 20lbs every trip.

What is breaking the code?

fishing user avatarpiscicidal reply :

When I say I "broke the code", it's a light-hearted attempt at saying I've figured the puzzle out.

The second Saturday of the month I found something and it just "clicked".    I know where those big ones are at, why they're there and what they're eating.  When that water level drops and/or cools, this pattern will be done and I'll be off looking for them again...

When that happens and your looking for them again would you mind coming back to this thread and explaining the "code" you solved? I know it would help me and I am sure others to starting putting together or adding to our own decoding abilities.
fishing user avatarBassinLou reply :

MCS, Mike gave us an idea of what his "code" is more or less, earlier on this thread a few weeks back. However, MCS, Mike code I think is specific to Lox, not the waters you fish in JAX. Find the thread and see if you understand what I am trying to say. Giving credit to piscicidal, power of observation, is a key skillset to acquire when bass fishing.

Yeah I try to observe all I can. It has lead to some big fish this year and good numbers of fish too. I know it would be different, but hearing the story and seeing the thought process would be interesting. Something to build on.

Threw a worm into this sloppy, nasty corner. As I was trying to get it out of grass, I got a bite. Jacked up the hook set, reeled it in and hurried up to pitch it exactly where I missed him at. BAM! I got a good hookset and I thought a shark had took my worm. I've never had a finish swim that hard and much around the water. Tighten the drag up and this is what I pulled out. Oh yea, I finally got a pic with a fish bc my wife and daughter was wanting to see a big one in person. The bite happened right as they were leaving and came back hahapost-44031-0-81712600-1377835279_thumb.jpost-44031-0-21632200-1377835328_thumb.j

The water there is so blue/clear there, its nice when you are in the back area and you see a fish hit your bait from way down. I watched a bass come out of no where and eat a crank bait. I was amazed. I think thats the clearest water I have fished locally besides in the ocean,

I actually caught my 1st pea there after about 20 years of not catching one, annoying a male with a kvd 1.5. I went back and caught a few on top water spooks(kvd sexy dawgs). Those pine needles can be a pain tho on the declines. I can note countless times of almost sliding into the water. I remember taking my girl there and she was terrified of the thought of snakes, then she saw lightning and was arguing with me to go back to the car. I think we made it to the car within 3 seconds of being soaked in monsoon rain.

The last time I was there it was it was cold, there was a huge snake in the water baking in the sunshine near the shore and a goose that wanted to attack the car...wasnt a good day for fishing. I haven't been back since.

When I first moved to Delray there were no peacocks behind my home, a year later I caught a few small ones for the entire season.  Year after that the peacocks almost rivaled the LMB in numbers caught and started to get some size too.  Over the last year or so I've caught peas in Delray maybe 4 miles from where I live, just a matter of time until they are in my backyard again.
