Went out to Four Mile Run today for 2 hours to try out my new combos and some new baits (blade baits I got on ebay). Started off throwing the 1/2oz blades I got and on the third cast i had one strike it just so gently right on the bank and after a sluggish fight he was landed, I't felt and looked over four but I dont have a scale..
Not too long after that I started tearing it up with the blade bait, I started out with 5 and lost them all, here are the blade fish, each is a different one
About now was when I lost the last blade (gotta remember to buy more of them! Switched over to rattle traps and it produced also, I had one that musta been 4.5 follow all the way to the bank and turn back. On on traps I landed 2 crappie and one bass
All in all an excellent day for me, 7 bass & 2 crappie landed. Had 3 bass on and shook off the blade, one looked to be at least 6!...and missed mulpitle hits and followers, I'm going to head back out there tommorow if anyone is interested.
Wow Thai, when you told me you were catching them pretty good I thought a few shorties, but man those are some good fishies!! Nice work
sick man
They were mostly cookie cutter 2's I just wished the one that looked 6 didn't shake loose, most of them hit 3 feet off the bank
I wanna go with you tommorow but my girl is takin the lexus to work and my truck is still down. What time are u goin anyways ? She said I can drop her off and pick her up after. I wanna try out all these glx rods I just bought and the steezes too. Is that a silver buddy u were throwin ? Do u have an extra I can use ?

It's not a silver buddie its a similar blade bait i got off ebay, it has great action and puts out tons of vibrations and is cheaper at 5 for $10 shipped, I was throwing the 1/2 oz and lost all five i bought on snags....but a rattle trap would work too

I'm down for going whenever just let me know when you want to go
Crappie wanted some of that too
QuoteCrappie wanted some of that too
Yeah I was trying to avoid them but it happens lol
I've caught some almost Virginina citation (13"+ but not 15") crappie during the bass spawn. Great fight and from what I hear, great eating!
They are alot of fun on an UL, on a 7'MH not so much lol, and are great eating, I have about 5 lbs of filets left in my freezer from two months ago, my biggest one was right at 18"during the spawn
Fish on! lol, good catch.
Way to go to work.
We must have been talking about different warm water in PM-land, the one I'm thinking of is not Four Mile Run, its well south on the Potomac.
I've been surprised by the number of crappie I've caught on the SK red eye shad lipless cranks.

Yeah the one we discussed in PM land is being saved for when dan gets back, we plan on venturing a little further upstream to try for musky
just ordered a set of the 1/2 and a set of the 3/8 ounce. Gonna go to dicks sporting goods right now and see if they have something similar I can use tommorow when we go out. If they have something close then I will get one for you to use also. Altho it sounds like they might vanish fast out there.
Its pretty snaggy on the bottom out there, most I was able to shake free but eventually the river demanded payment for the bass caught
thai,
once again very well said!
Quotethai,once again very well said!
I cant wait until it's warm enough to hit blue plains, I imagine burning a blade bait through the piling would produce big time!
you wouldn't lose as many if I trained you in the "dingle-dangle" technique, remember? ;D
nice fish dude, I wish I coulda been there. How deep is that area?

and i thought i would never hear (see) that phrase again!!! good memories.
i still can't get over how many times I got that darn thing un-snagged. That was ridiculous.
I wish you both were there I dingle dangled them loose about 20 times before I lost all five
dingle...
dangle...
dingle dangle....
OFF!
Nice dude.
Ummmmmm..........I'm almost afraid to ask this but.......exactly who dingled and dangled what, and why were any of you watching!!
"Dingle-dangling" is an ancient technique of gently shaking a lure loose from a snag.

Thats not what I was refering to :
Whatever you guys have to tell yourselves so you can sleep at night........... ;D
Nice fish! You're a brave man to be fishing in this weather. I can't take it!
I'm a junkie....I needed my fix today, and boy did it feel goooooooooood
hi everyone. I'm new to this site but not to bass fishing in NoVA. Just thought I'd introduce myself. Hopefully I can learn some new "shorebound" locations, mine are getting old.
Welcome aboard bass crusher, we go on first name basis here, introduce yourself and stick around
The name's Gary, I'm a Libra, I love long walks on the beach, cute little puppies, and big fish.
Been fishing since I was 4, obsessively for about the past 10 years, doing local team tournaments for the last 4. Tackle junkie and homemade jigmaker when I'm really bored.

Shoulda saved that for the 1st date Gary!
Any pictures of your homemade jigs? With the way we lose them fishing brushpiles, I can see us getting along just fine ;D
Sounds like this guy is gonna fit in jst fine.
I'll try to figure out how to upload some pics here. All my homemade jigs are hair jigs for cool water. I'm one of the few serious bass fishermen who has virtually no luck on rubber/silicone jigs.
Deff interested in how those look, all my pet fish have seen way too much of the same ole jigs. Please show

Hopefully we can change that, there are a few places where they pop the jigs like they are pez! Never used a hair jig, in for pics!
Thai did your fish count go up, you holdin out on us?
yes it went up by 2 bass and 2 crappie today
And yes I am holding out! ;D
Nice, wasn't four mile run was it? It was almost out of water at low tide today.
yes it was, were you out there today?
yea i was out there before the sun was up. I had one bass on a silver buddy but he spit it and I snaged it up about 5 casts later, wish I had more than one. I tried a kastmaster and had one spit it too. I did hook into about 5 gizzard shads.
My fish count started today. I was out there for maybe an hour or so. So far one bass for the year ;D lets hope it doesnt stay that way for long. Got mine out there with Thai today on a 1/4 ounce bitsy bug jig with a bitsy craw trailer. Felt good to get a fish on my new steez/glx combo
PS: I just ordered three 600 yard spools of yo-zuri ultra soft, 8,10, and 12 pound test. They got it at Cabelas Thai incase you decide to order some
Nice fishin Thai! Way to keep the heat on during our little ice age ;D
By the way fellas the name is Paul.
"...tight lines..."
From todays secret spot, im sure i could pulled out at least 5 more if I stayed longer
nice, Thai. You almost managed to make that fish look like a non-dink! ;D
A good pound and a half and fought like a 5! Hit a bitsy jig and ran with it!!
Gary, I just started tying my own hair jigs yesterday.... I need some help. I'd like to see yours, and then post up pictures of mine. Haha, welcome. The NOVA crew is far better than the crappy guys up in PA, NY, or FL.
Thai, a dink is a dink is a dink.
I dunno, I think thats a decent qaulity fish he caught yesterday all things considered. I wanna see some of you other guys get out there with 10 degree wind chills and even catch one that size. This is tough fishing and Thai is one of the only ppl brave/crazy enough to tough it out. I think my fishing partner Brent took that pic of Thai. Like I been telling Thai, this guy knows his stuff and knows where the fish are. He just doesnt go around posting on forums, and telling everyone.
I'm busting his balls. I know he is a good fisherman.
Thats one more fish than I've caught this year.
Oh I know you guys are just messin with him, everyone is pretty close around here. I just think a dink has different meaning in the winter. In spring that would be a dink but in this weather and fishing from shore I think that one is respectable. Thats not to say there isnt way bigger fish to catch right now but I respect anyone that can catch anything right now when theres 25mph winds beatin the tar out of you
lol yeah Brent took it, he does know his stuff man, we al gotta get together when I get back, Im sure I can get us back in that spot without a boat, let's see if we can still get there since this was maybe 4 years ago.
When're you leaving? i'v got a four day weekend coming up and should get a kitchen pass for at least one day. Meet up by the bridges?

Well as of this morning I'll be Phoenix til Saturday enjoying some sun. On Sunday i will be back out testing the waters, let's plan something then
Checked out Thai's magic new spot for a coule of casts this afternoon. Caught 1 bass. Thai, parking is a bit sketchey. Not so sure you could get a bunch of people in there without drawing a lot of unwanted attention. It is a nice little spot tho. I can see why you could really have a numbers day there!!

What was it on? I'm going to fish it more thoroughly when i get back on Sunday, you should come out then too.
Mums the word on this spot so dont bother with the PM's fellas ;D
It was ona bitsy bug 1/4 with small robo worm trailer. Deff wanted it, no doubt about the bite. Was very nice to have a bass pull on the string!!
the one I caught there did the same thing hit that jig like a small train and ran! Deff an exciting change!
im hittin the spot tommorow with brent and one of my other boys. Hopefully either the bitsy jig or a grub will get 'em on.
and Im in a pic postin kinda mood and i got a good laugh out of Thai holding this hawg lol
Sweet picture! hard to believe that guy hit a 5" Senko!
That was a good day man, hopefully we get some fishing like that again soon!
This is gonna be a good year Thai. Fish like the one here wont even be worth me takin pics of anymore, I'll post this anyways since no one else been postin much for pics lately.
update on my trip to Arizona, I'm staying in my uncles pool house and I just found a scorpion next to the bed...the most venomous one in north america at that....
I bet it would make good bait ;D
Alright Steve, how was the secret spot today? Almost was able to break away from work for a couple today and give it a shot.
QuoteAlright Steve, how was the secret spot today? Almost was able to break away from work for a couple today and give it a shot.
I did ok for the two hours I was out there. I spent more time cutting off one lure and retying another then actual fishing. I caught one as soon as I got there on a 4 inch white silver flake senko. Tried the spinnerbait, topwater popper and jig before finally the lucky craft pointer78. I must have missed 3 or 4 and ended up gettin 4 fish on it, so five total. One was a bluegill tho and one a crappie so those dont really count.
Woot Woot! Congrats on the fishhhhhhys scuba steve, who says theres no good fishing in nova right now hahah
Ya I have to think this jerkbait bite is gonna be deadly all winter so imma stick with it. Im all bout it now. I enjoy throwing jb's more then anything else right now. So is the best action for a jb rod fast ? I know loomis jb rods are all fast and I have a crucial I bought that just happens to be mh fast as well as an avid mh fast. Think I should give it a try ? Is there any need for a special jb rod ? Today was the first time I ever fished a jerkbait so I need to be schooled. I think I did ok for my first time tho. Wish that 4 pounder wouldnt have gotten off tho >
a popper? how warm is the water there?
I dunno how warm it was but alot of fish were jumping one after another the entire time I was there . So I figured I had nothing to lose tryin one. There must have been between 1-2 thousand fish there along a 300 foot stretch. I saw hundreds of bass between 1-2 pounds and tons of crappie and bluegill. I also saw maybe a dozen or so bigger bass between 3-6 pounds swimming around. I couldnt do anything to get their attention aside from one that got off 3 feet from shore. The water was clear all the way to the bottom. Tide was very low too.
Quotea popper? how warm is the water there?
near the discharge about 60 near the bridge maybe 50? I felt it on the day I caught the 7 bass it it was not cold
Very nice! I think catching them on the jerkbait is one of the most fun way to catch. I prefer a 70/30 type of rod, somewhat fast. I prefer a rod with more of a parabolic action when throwing larger jb's but the smaller ones are fine on a fast action rod. Sounds like I need to get my big butt down there and chuck a jb!!
Nice fish! You are true fisheman Steve, found a spot that isn't frozen is huge!
I tried it out on Saturday. Was that Steve there I saw? I was the one with the kayak.
I had some monsters of unknown type on the line several times throughout the day. I'll be going back with some heavier duty gear so I can muscle them in faster instead of giving them time to get off. I really think these things would've busted my 12lb Trilene if I tried to force them in.
nah that wasnt me , i wasnt there saturday. What u had on your line was probably some of those monster catfish. Ppl catch 50 pounders down there all the time. Also could have been a huge carp. Not worth breakin a nice rod over tho. Im goin back down tommorow morning with my friend Brent. Brent and Thai are the two ppl that inspired me to shore fish this winter. So Im workin on my worm/jig game as well as learning the art of the jerkbait. I'll be a better angler as a result come spring time. I'll be out on my stratos 5 mornings a week come spring. Gonna be dividing my time between the Potomac as well as the Chickahominy and James river. I wanna do it all this year. I hear the buzzbait bite on the chick river is insane and I love my buzzbait fishing. If anyone wants to join us tommorow then lemme know. I plan on catchin a dozen bass tommorow in the few hours Im there.
Ill probably be back down there again tomorrow. I went today for a few hours and had 6 and a few crappie and bluegills

Thai when are you back in town? i have a long weekend this week and would love to get out a few days over the weekend.
Friday I'll be back! Are you going to the expo?
nope just fishing. you?
So down! Let's do it man! I got a few other spots where we have the chance at some 5's
that works hit me up Friday night. maybe next week we'll take the boat to blue plains...weather permitting.
I'm going out Sunday with my wife for a few hours. I think I've found a pretty money spot down here on the base. I'll def catch a 10!!!

incher...
Well, I'm broke so I'm jsut fishing on Saturday.
Thai, remind me to punch you in the nuts. Your trip to AZ has really made you gain some balls talkin trash.
I'm hoping you guys will let me in on your secret spot, I won't say anything, it's my wife you gotta worry about... she's sneaky She will also be with me to catch a real fish, not her sissy stocked trout that she usually targets.
I dare ya.... ;D
It is supposed to be 49 degrees on Saturday and I am planning on fishing blue plains and four mile from 9:00 till 3:00 or until I have had enough. Will anyone else be out there? Is the Belle Haven ramp free of ice and if not how about Gravelly?
If you have room for one more person I'd love to join ya out there. Of course I will hit ya up with some gas cash as well as bring some snacky cakes and cheezy poofs
Hey Steve, check your PM
Looks like Im headed out on saturday, couldnt be happier. Oh and Thai have you went fishing at all since you been there ? Plz tell me you have at least caught some bass or maybe scored some Arizona hotties. They must be walkin around in short shorts left and right out there
Have not gotten any fishing in, been extremely busy with family stuff.....I miss your coldwater..
I'm going out tomorrow with my buddy Nelson in his Jon boat. We will be launching from belle haven nad heading up to the bridge/spoils/poop. Went by the launch and saw 6 boat trailors in the parking lot!! Friend said someone had one over 7! Sounds like they are hungry after all the ice!! River above 4 mile run looked like it still had a good deal of ice. Anyone going out be very careful and wear your pfd's. Will post after I get home..
