Here are all of the areas we have, What we would like to do is find out where we have the most interest and get the list down to a top 5, out of that top 5 your vote will determine where the next meet and greet will be.
All of the campgrounds I have spoken with so far have all said they are usually booked 1 to 3 months in advance, so the sooner the better, that way we can have all of the most important information available posted for each.
Please keep this post for votes only, any questions, please ask them in the "Va. meet and greet 2013" thread or send Zoff or myself a PM.
1) Potomac, near Mattawomen
2) Chick river
3) Lake Moomaw
4) Briary Creek
5) Claytor Lake
6) Leesville Lake
7) Occoquan Reservoir, Sandy run or Fountainhead
8) Smith Mountain Lake
9) Kerr Lake (Buggs Island)
10) Lake Gaston
11) Philpott Lake
Edited by NitrofreakUnless you're rowing, you can't launch from Sandy onto the Occoquan. It's not a public ramp.
Plus the res is 9.9hp limit! You can drop a big boat in, just TM only after that. Plus Fountainhead has boat rentals.
top 5 are,
Potomac
Chick River
Claytor Lake
Occoquan Reservoir @ Fountainhead
Smith Mountain Lake
Out of these 5 we will post all available info possible to inform you of expences etc... by January 1st we will have a location picked out so that we can be prepaired for the trip.
All information about each, we hope to have postd by the end of the first week of November, Good luck and we hope to see you soon !!!
As I can fish the Potomac anytime, I've had a change of mind and would like to change my vote to Smith Mountain Lake; I'd like to try new water.
Vote change noted Traveler, Thank you !!!
Good options.
Problem with Chick is that if the wind is blowing from the east the fishery shuts down. Plus the fact that it is expensive to stay in the Williamsburg area.
Claytor may be too far for the guys to travel.
Potomac and SML are good all year.
Never been to Occoquan Reservoir @ Fountainhead. Any traffic problems and are there any reasonably priced motels to stay if necessary where we can charge our boat batteries?

Good question Sam.
I did not bother with Hotels/Motels, their prices vary so much from place to place and the area may not be acceptable for a comfortable feeling when having a family and or boat with you.
I personally would rather you guy's research those so that you feel comfortable with a suitable area to fit your needs and feelings of security.

Just as an FYI, for Smallwood State Park MD, the Waldorf and LaPlata MD areas have many motels that regularly see anglers fishing Potomac tournaments. On the VA side, look to the Rte 1 corridor area for lodging.
Please don't stone my head, BUT...
How do you guys regular do the "meet and greet "... reading around most of you guys have boat or any gear to be on the water. What about the people that we have to stay on the " shore line / river - lake bank " I know you guys have this activity on camping sites and I camp a LOT and all camping places have a LOT to do. BUT just to know... IS this just for " boat people " ?...
Thanks guys! ( is better to be dumb one day, that the whole life )

No way, we want to give co-anglers (non-boaters) the opportunity to fish from a boat.
We would like to have as many co-anglers as we have boaters, we just don't want to be in a position where we have more co-anglers than we have room on the boats and have to leave someone on the bank for a while. During the 2012 M&G I fished with two co-anglers (my boat holds 3), and we had a ball.
I think I can speak for the rest when I say no one would be left out even if we had to fish in four hour shifts. Also, any style of boat is welcome. Also, it's not just for campers, you can come for the day, share a cabin with others, or find a local motel. Some of us bring food of some type, but it's not required, just chip in a donation ($5.00) for the burgers or whatever.
The main purpose of the event is to meet fellow BR members and enjoy some camaraderie, food, and fishing. Try it, you'll enjoy your self, and you'll make some new friends; but beware, some of us are crazy Not me of course, but the others???????

We pushed the limit this year but hope, based on how much fun we had, more boaters will participate. It was really cool to see so many different types of people get together on a single interest. We had every personality from "If they got anymore easy going and laid back we'd have to do an autopsy" to "high speed low drag". Hope we get a bunch more in 2013.
Yep, we want to take the guys who fish from shore in a bass boat so they can enjoy the experience.
Hopefully we will have more boaters in 2013.
If not, then we need to consider taking guys out for two hours at a time.
In an eight hour day each boater can take four fellow fishermen in their boats.
Just food for thought.

Well at least you guy's are not talking behind my back LOL !!!!!
Don't let these guy's fool ya, they are a lot of fun to be around !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We enjoy giving everyone the opportunity they may otherwise not have, this meet and greet will get better with time, everyone of these we learn from and we will apply new things each and every meet and greet we go to, camping is just part of the fun, keep in mind this is a family event, we would like to have family envolved as well, so if your wife, son, daughter, wishes to come along, bring them too !!!
But it does not stop there, I have made some new friends to fish with as well, and I look forward to future outings with all of the new people I have met and have yet to meet, the meet and greet may only be for a day maybe more in the future, but the friendship we make will last a lifetime and the opportunity to learn new techniques from others during those outings will help us all to be better fishermen, so please feel free to join us, boaters and non boaters alike !!!!!
We of course do not wish for anyone to have to be shore bound during this event, it is much better as an all day event but we will do whatever it takes to let all non boaters have their shot at fishing from a boat.
It was a lot of fun and it still continues to be a lot of fun, I look forward to this upcoming event and doing it all over again !!!
Now, lets get drunk and be somebody !!!!!
G R E A T !!!
This sound like a family, you have all in one...
I would like to make it, I like the way you guys keep it, on the way of a "family event "... I spend a LOT of time with my family and we do a lot of camping. I will see you guys.
Plans are on the way!!! Thanks guys.
:respect-059:
You are very welcome !!!!
We look forward to meeting you and having some fun !!!
+1
Alright it's 4 to 4 between Smith Mountain Lake and the Potomac, we now have 2 votes for the Occoquan, November is all but done, we have only December left to cast your vote, so if you are interested get your vote in !!!!!
Ok it's 5 to 4 with the Potomac out front, 2 votes for the Res and 2 votes for the Chick.
It's getting close so if you want to have a great time in your favorite area you need to make your votes count so get em in now before the last day of December !!!!
This year has been an awesome year !!!
Even though I did not get to fish that much, the meet and greet has opened a few doors to help make some new friends and fish with some really great people, I can't tell you how much fun it is getting to know all of you.
Traveler, it has been a blessing to be able to spend some time with you, I wish we would have had more time on the water at Anna and caught a few more fish back in that cove, but what a memory seeing you use a spinner as a top water bait.
Zoff, I have to say I can not remember having a better time meeting family, you opened your home to me and I felt humbled to be there, the fishing was a fantastic part of the day but your family made the whole trip worth every mile driven and thats one trip I will never forget.
Quan, I can tell you this, you have made the last trip out this year a really great trip, I have not met anyone who knows his home waters as intimately as you do, and then to turn right around and let someone in on all of that knowlage was really special, after watching you put that knowlage to work and showing the confidence you had, you came up with some really great fish in there and to see that plan put to work was awesome !!!
I can not wait for the next trip with any of you, there are already future plans in the works for next year with a couple of my new friends and I hope this next meet and greet will open the same doors for you all as it did for me, it's really a great time and I for one hope all of you can bring your families and enjoy it with us !!!!
NitroFreak... I believe this has been the best year of fishing I have ever had. No because of the fish I caught (or didn't) but because of the friends I made and the fellowship I was blessed with. Based on that... even if we have the Meet and Greet at somewhere other than SML... I invite any of you down here to stay and fish. Cheers!

Thanks for the flowers NF, I am also looking forward to the up-coming year fishing with everyone, on whatever water is chosen. I'd like to see us get together more than just once a year though.
You guys should rent a bus and come to the RoadTrip together!
Car pooling is a viable option that we can work on

I have a plan to do just that, there are many interesting areas up there that I would like to give a chance, I have already started plans for next season and can't wait fish with you again my friend, who knows, the way this winter is going, it may stay mild again, there may just be a weekend in there somewhere !!!
PS: I thought you would like the dasies !!! LOL !!!

What about our boats ?
Depends on how many guys you have, but we always have had seats available in the past.
Would be awesome to pile in and go, though the boater part is the tough part.

I know Traveler is coming, he has already offered 2 times, Zoff and I talked about doing something like that as well, but the only thing is, my family loves to fish and camp, I would have to have my boat and my camper there, it's 680 miles from my house to the state park, thats roughly 300 in fuel just for the truck, just to get there, then the jeep and then the boat fuel cost's as well, I could talk to them and see if they would be willing to fish with other boaters but I seriously doubt it to be a possibility, but you never know.

HA HA !!! can you imagine all of us rolling up in a big bus lol !!!
I can see it now, the doors open as the bus rolls to a stop, the smoke is billowing from the opening, the first one out through the doors says....NAAAAAARRRRRRRLLLYY !!!!!
Then the rest of us roll out in a drunken stuper....hiccup !!!! lesss go...let's go ..... hiccup.... fissin !!!
If you share your ride, room, and boat, you can reduce the cost of a Road Trip.
i sure hope somebody lets me hitchhike a ride on their boat. looks like the potomac is winning, sweet! On 11/9/2012 at 8:24 PM, Sam said:Yep, we want to take the guys who fish from shore in a bass boat so they can enjoy the experience.

Does the Potomac require us to register where we putting in at?

You'll need a VA Tidal fishing lience, check out the VA Dept. of Natural Resources for info.
Boating regulations are a little unclear, do I need a red flag on the boat with me or will my flairs be ok?

Flairs work. Also, if your flotation cushion is international orange or red that counts as a signaling device. But with your lungs I don't think you'll need to worry.
I have been wanting to do sml I just don't have a good motor for that lake

It's a shame that SML will have to wait until another day. I do bask in the light of the fact that I will get to fish a place with people who know. You guys would love SML. Well... maybe next year. See yall there.... where ever it is..
Still 17 days left buddy, don't count it out yet !!!!
6 to 5 between SML and the Potomac with the Potomac out front, 3 for the Res, and 2 for the Chick.
See it's a close race, i'm excited right now !!!
I honestly can't beleive Claytor did not get a bunch of votes and yet it is at 0, who would have thunk it?

I did remember, I know it's amazing right LOL !!!!
Love to get together with you guys. Would love to hit the Potomac. Perhaps may be the most accommodating for everyone up north. Be fun to make a tournament out of it.
I can't go if its anywhere but the potomac.

You have not voted yet Shimmy, if you want it to be there then every vote will count, it's tight between two with others gaining ground !!!
As for a tourny, we can make a tournament out of it BUT it can be for fun only !!!
This event is an opportunity for those who otherwise do not have the chance to get out there and fish the way that we do, it's a teaching/learning process for all of us, plus it's a great opportunity to make some really great friends and have as much fun as we can.
We look forward to meeting you Shimmy if you wish to join in !!!
To All,
If you want to be a part of this, make your votes and make them ASAP, the last day of December at midnight will be it, NO MORE VOTES will be counted after that.
This has been my experience from the last meet and greet.
I have made several friends from this and a lot of memories, I have learned so much from all of these people and I look forward to learning more and sharing more in the future.
Each one of these places will get eliminated as we progress through the years, don't miss out on your chance to fish Va. with us and meet some of the most awesome people on this site !!!
Should have clarified, i like the tournament atmosphere despite not having money involved. Always makes fun bragging rights. Last one i was apart of was a blast despite me and my comrade coming in second (due to my stubbornness to switch to that stinking jerkbait).
Cool, We look forward to meeting you Shimmy, you have been a big help here with your posts and I know if you are paired with someone they are bound to learn a great deal.
BTW, don't know if you all have heard, or read August 2012 BASS TIMES pg-24, but Juan Duran caught a 18.37 lb Northern Snakehead in the Occoquan river on a TX rig soft bait. The article said "Exotic Snakeheads are not only thriving in the Potomac River system, they're also growing to world record proportions"
So angler beware if you come to the Potomac........
Thanx for the heads up Traveler !!!
Only 14 days left !!!
It's now 7 to 5 between the Potomac and SML !!
7 for the Potomac
5 for SML
3 for the Occoquan
2 for the Chick
0 for Claytor
This will be updated for the next two Monday's, the 2nd Monday is New Years Eve, we will check the voting at midnight to see who the winner is and post it here, good luck to all !!!!
I know Juan. He used to fish the res tx's!
This was a picture that got forwarded to me from a friend of a snakehead caught in pohick, I think it looks bigger!
Maybe there should be a disclaimer that the M&G is not responsible for tackle broken while catching Snakeheads.
What's the date on the meet and greet this year?
We are looking at late August or sometime in September, it can not be the last weekend of the month, we have one that will not be able to make it if we schedule it then.
We will start a new post on Jan 1st for discussions about any questions relating to this and other things, we want everyones input so we can make the best decisions possible.
Thanx F4SD !!!

Good luck to everyone !!!
Tonight is it !!
So far it looks to be the Potomac with 9 votes, SML with 6, good luck and I can't wait to see where we end up !!!
Happy New Year everybody !!!!!
Looks like we will be fishing the Potomac !!!!
Congrats to all of those who voted for the Potomac, now we need to set a date and get all the details worked out, we already know we cant do it on the last weekend of the month we choose.
Months we are looking at are August and September, due to some are still in school, so for you in school guys, when is your last day of school scheduled for this year?
We look forward to meeting all of you and having some fun, it was a blast last year and I for one can't wait to do it again !!!!
Are you going to pick somewhere on the river that jon boats can be used too?
We want this to work for everybody, so yes, but it's going to require a lot of information from everybody to help put this together, I personally have never fished the Potomac but I look forward to doing so, we already have some info so if anyone has suggestions please feel free to share, I hope to visit with Traveler in the spring to get floor plans together for the area and do a little fishing as well.
Either Zoff of I will put together another post in the future for boaters and non boaters etc... but for now we would like to work on getting a date set
Good deal. Count me in
Teal,
It looks like you live in North Carolina, Are you new to Va?
No. I live 10 mins from VA. On the carolina side off of 95. I am fairly familiar with VA. My parents live 20 mins from Smith Mountain Lake in Roanoke Va. I have fished several lakes in VA including the Potomac River. I also work for a Lake Management co. So I have been to most of the lakes in NC and VA at least a couple times. Is this just a thing for you guys in VA or guys like me who aren't far away at all
No not at all. anyone is welcome to join us, I just though that would be one heck of a drive depending on where you were in NC, we have one from Md that joins us as well.
We do this in the hopes we can get families together and enjoy not just fishing, but give some of our fishing buddies a chance to fish from a boat that they may otherwise not have the chance to do, this will be our second one, the first was at Lake Anna, but we want to cover the state of Va, with all of her bodies of water, so each year one place is eliminated, we try hard to include the state parks as well.
We have a day of fishing then a big cookout at the end of the day and enjoy some of the company, last year we had some great supporters who had sponsored us with some gifts to give away, Seibert Outdoors joined us, BAM Magizine, Our own Bass Resource, and Traveler even made some of his baits and gave away a ton of them.
We get together and talk trash too, we lie to each other, but most of all we have a lot of fun, I hope to see you there and we look forward to meeting you, don't forget to bring your family if you wish !!!
Have you checked out the Roadtrip for Pickwick?
Potomac? This will bea real treat. Looking forward to see you "old" friends and making new ones. Not to mention fishing a place where i have never fished before. Can somebody post something that will lay out the requirements lie what licenses to get.... boat owner info and fees for the area? Just anything that will be necessary that we may not need anywhere else in the Commonwealth.
I saw the threads for the pickwick trip and may is too soon for me to plan a 12 hr trip. But I can be anywhere in VA in 4 hrs or so. I saw where Lake Gaston And Kerr Lake/bugs was on the original list and they are my home lakes. I fish and work on gaston and Kerr lake on a daily basis. Gaston is literally 7 miles from my house.
I thought that it would be a good chance to meet other fishermen and fish other lakes and have a vacation all at the same time. Potomac is a little more than three hours for me to drive. Not far at all to me. I also see this as a learning opportunity.
You guys can count me in as another boat too. Maybe more non boaters can come. I sure don't mind sharing the boat
I'm just really happy that I finally got on the forum so I could meet a bunch of like minded guys.
Hey Teal... see you have GSD (or one of the GSD offshoots as the B&W pic is hard to see the markings) in your avatar. I have 2 now... and have had three other over my lifetime. Great dogs.
Haha. She is a Belgian Malinois. (Offshoot). Excellent dog. She is my fishing partner. The jack Russle in the picture doesn't go often as she likes to jump off the boat In the water. Takes up to much time fishing her out..lol.

I think school is out by August, but I don't know who gets out when.
We should have Aug 24th and 25th open
September 7th and 8th, 14th and 15th, 21st and 22nd.
Those should be our available dates.

Your VA freshwater license is fine as long as you do not fish above the WW bridge, which is considered DC waters. If your boat is registered in VA you're also OK. Ramp fee @ Pohick is ~ $8, I think, I get the yearly pass.

This is a fairly long thread, and since I haven't read all of it I just wanted to ask... is Pohick where this is definitely going out of? I'm about 4 miles from the Potomac so this is a definite possiblity for me.
Not real sure just yet, I know I will be camping there, but we may meet somewhere else, I don't think it will be too far from there if we do.
Pohick works for small boats too.
Leesylvania is pretty popular but may be a little 'dicey' for jon boats on windy days. This is why I upgraded from my 14 foot jon to a 19 foot tracker. I would bust a$$ up to Neabsco in my little jon hoping the waves wouldn't be worse on the way back.

I was actually wondering that as it looked like her coat was slightly brindle. Am I correct? I love the Malinois but a bit too high strung for this old guy. This is one of my pals

IIRC... I do believe you ARE older than me. lol
Yeah she is brindle with a black mask. I don't have a good picture of her on my iPad. Malinois are super hi strung...almost on a psycho level. She wouldn't give me a chance to take a good picture. Lol. I'll probably bring her with me on our Potomac trip.
I wish I could bring mine but their prey drive is so great... they chase fish, birds, cast lures, etc. It's like fishing with a monkey on crack. I just gave up.
Oh... Mine has a super high drive too. But she also is very well mannered and she listens very well. Mine knows that she will get a spanking in front of everybody if she acts up. Lol. Mine chases and catches squirrels on a daily basis
On the boat mine is well behaved. Once the trolling motor goes down she will go lay on rear deck

Know what you mean. Mine is great with people and anything that does not move away at a quick pace. If it runs, flies, or is thrown... fair game.
Would love to see early summer dates

BB50, we can't do that for two reasons, one is that it puts the dates too close to the Roadtrip, we do not want to interfere with that at all, 2) this is a family event, the children are not out of school until August, some of these children have a lot of homework and extra caricular activities going on during the school year, this is a time when the whole family can make a vacation out of something like this if they so desired.
I will say this much for the Meet and greet, it has opened the doors and allowed me to fish with some really good people from here, I have made a couple of good friends locally that allows a weekend trip to be possible, with or with out family going along, I would love the opportuniity to fish with each and every one of you, it has been nothing but fun so far, if you or anyone else for that matter wish to fish with others you have not met from here yet, all you need to do is ask, post a trip you are going to take and see if you have a couple that want to join in.
This year is going to be a little difficult, I am currently saving all my pennies to try and make the Roadtrip, otherwise I would love to get out there with you if you would not mind having me along.
Oh I thought kids get out of school in June and go back around labor day
It really depends on the location of the school, late June, mid July is the norm, snow days and makeup days etc.. come into play as well as summer school, so we try to work it in as best we can.
My kid (and me as well) go back to school in late August. Around here they get out in early to mid may.

Dt's?? I am assuming double something? If you are going to say you went fishing today then you need to let us know if you caught anything !!!!
DT's... as in Detox... Detoxification... the reaction of an addict with out the substance of the addiction. lol
Yeah... caught a few about a pound and one that went about 6 or 7 but I didn't have my scale. All on a countdown jerk bait.
Congrats!!! nice job buddy !!!!
You should know by now that you will never be able to cure that, might as well give in and enjoy and get your fix another day. lol !!!

Nope, she is in public and I teach at an university.
Summer break is mid may to early Aug. at least it is here.
Interesting !!! what do you teach?
I teach stagecraft and theatre technology.
Not something I am familure with, but it sounds interesting for sure !!!
I like it. I get to work with my hands and build really interesting things and to beat all I get ac, heat and shelter from the elements.
Basically I am responsible for all the things you see and hear on stage for a theatrical show except the actors and costumes.
I enjoy the teaching side as well, got a good bunch of kids eager to learn and dedicated to what they are learning and doing. Just happens to interfere with the fishing a little more than I would like.

Felt bad that I didn't post a pic of that day's fish so I went out yesterday and caught this one just to show you!
Nice fish. Y'all making me want to get out there.
Hehehehehe! That's the idea. Get people fired up and ready to come to the M&G! Here's two more (didn't take pics of the 5 chain pickerel) from today at this small no name lake near my house...
The big one went almost 7 pounds. Pic does not do it justice. The other thing you really can't tell... it was almost blue in color. You can see some grey and blue if you look close at the pic but this fish was dang near blue.
A blue bass!
The water may be contaminated with a radioactive material.
Don't fish it again until I can get there to test it!!!!
PM me the directions.
Happy New Year!
Looking forward to seeing you and the other guys at the M&G at the Richmond Fishing Expo on January 26th.

That's funny. Really... it had a blue tint to the thing. That and the bright pink you can see in the pic. Punk Bass?
Do you think it is Long Mike's grandchild?
