well summer fishing can get kinda dull and well theirs alot of people from central va on here. so,say sandy river reservoir sometime in the up coming weeks.
any one intrested?
Are there places to shore fish, as I am land bound. :
Id be interested, but any other lakes or rivers than Sandy?
very interested where is sandy ???
Sandy Creek Reservoir by Farmville.
Trolling motors, only.
Not good for bank fishing.
If we go we will need some guys with boats to take a nonboater with them.
If we want to meet where we can bank fish we will need to find another location, such as the Innsbrook pond by the office buildings on Cox Road.
sandy river is under 10hp. I hate correcting people cause i feel like a jerk :-/ but I dont want anyone misinformed.

How is Sandy River's fishing this time of year or lately? Whats Sandy like? Never been down there. Are you guys set on this location or do you have any other fisheries in mind?
Interested, but what about another location closer to Richmond?
QuoteInterested, but what about another location closer to Richmond?
Thats what I was wondering, what about Swift Creek? Anyone else have any other places closer to central VA?
Lake Rooty (Innsbrook lake) has always produced fish for me and is great fishing, but there are no boats/canoes/kayaks allowed on the lake.
Id be down to meet up at anytime i have a 15ft jon with a 9.9 but pocohontas or amelia wildlife or powhatan would all be closer options.
QuoteQuoteInterested, but what about another location closer to Richmond?Thats what I was wondering, what about Swift Creek? Anyone else have any other places closer to central VA?
we could do swift creek its just an electric only. but still dont have much for shore fisherman unless they have permission to fish in woodlake or b-mill, plus its probably a pain for any one to launch with a jon at the public ramp. i dunno options so far
1. sandy river res
2. briery (no tourny)
3. swift creek
4. Powhatan lake
please add if you have more ideas
pocohontas state park

Chickahominy Lake? not much for shore fishing but there are no motor restrictions.
I would like to shore fish, just for the simple fact that I have never fished from a boat (I am a newbie at fishing). I would automatically lose any kind of tournament :-?
Would lake Anna be out of the question?
I don't know if any of my daughters will join me and I know my wife will go for sure, If it is just the 2 of us I can put one on my boat.
I also have a 14' jon boat that if i can figure out how to bring it seats 3
Would definitely be down for getting together with anyone willing. I could also stand Lake Anna, it's not that far away. But my little tiny boat might get rolled on something that big. I could do any of the smaller reservoirs too.
If the wife doesn't come along, I got room for one on my boat =).
Im just gonna put up a poll to see where everyones at on location, cause im very interested in this. Ill put the locations already mentioned
I voted for Innsbrook just because those have been on my to do list for a while and its shore fishing
i also vote for innsbrook nice fish there fun and everyone has same fun from land couple ponds right near one another and its relatively close to Powhatan Amelie Richmond chesterfield no more than about 30 min from any of them i say lets go there Pocahontas isn't great for fishing to me . the dam produces some dinks briery is pretty far for most of us not to mention with a big group it would be extremely overwhelming for newbies it is like i95 out there on the water. swift creek is electric and i have never seen or heard of anything being of size or quantity caught out there my experience is to both that and Pocahontas is extremely over fished so maybe Powhatan lake or sandy river if people think this would be a good place defiantly think its a great idea ;D ;D glad to see people in Virginia trying to get together
Is Powhatan Lake actually producing now? Or are you guys talking about the ponds?
powhatan lakes are producing but biggest is going to be no bigger then 3lbs range since lakes are young but they are reproducing nicely! I live on powhatan lakes rd! Im going to hit powhatan lakes up in the morning and try for a topwater bite. Im game for sandy or Powhatan lakes!! 8-)
being that I just bought a house in central va this might be something I would be down for. Guess I am no longer a NOVA guy I havent been out on my bassboat in a month so Im itchin to fish:( Cold side of lake anna would be fun or Chick lake.
^were did you move to in central va
chick lake is a hike and a half for me
its 30-40 min to sandy/briery for me and about an hour if your coming from Richmond and their both great lakes
I voted for the cold side of lake Anna.
It's already a 2 hour hike from my house but I think launching from the state park would supply enough room for everyone so far and should provide enough land for those who want to fish from shore.
Racer894,
This is a fun tourny no need to worry about winning or losing, It's all about getting to know people and do some fishing.
Newbie or not we all are going to learn something from this experience.
Never fished anna. Would it be impossible to fish with jon boat and a 9.9?

I havent moved yet but its an almost new house on two acres right where orange and spotsy counties meet. Bout 35 minutes from lake anna and twenty five minutes off the central park exit

People do it all the time even in smaller crafts.
Lake Anna will be new to be, but im down for learning a new area
Sandy River Res. and Briery Creek Lake have shore fishing opportunities with Briery having more shore areas available.
If you want to catch a bunch and take some home to help with the fishery management, try Hunting Run Res. Not much shore opportunities but there are jon boats and electric motors for rent there.
lets set a date so everyone can plan on this i think its a great idea its more abut getting together than fishing so whats the date ? cooler months or couple weeks ? ;D
How about the August 21/22 weekend? Have we decided on a location yet?
So has a date been set or location?
21/22 sounds good !!! lets set a date !
lake anna cold side 21 22 of august sound good ?
lake anna cold side 21 22 of august sound good ?
So is everyone gonna be able to make it to Anna on that weekend? if you know yet?
QuoteSo is everyone gonna be able to make it to Anna on that weekend? if you know yet?
I'll set plans to make it, but I have NO idea what the "cool side" of Lake Anna is. The 21st would be best for my schedule.
The 21st or 22nd will work for me as well.
The cold side or public side of lake Anna is a pretty good place to be with lots of room for all especially at the state park ramp.
What time and what boat launch do you guy's prefer,There are several to choose from.
Anna marina,High point marina,Sturgeon's creek marina,Lake Anna state park.
They are all relatively close to one another.
I would suggest the state park but I will go with whatever suits you guy's.
There is not much pressure there at the state park as far as tourny's are concerned and getting out of or trying to fish around Sturgeon's will be a challenge for those who have smaller craft's if it is busy that weekend unless they stay around the marina which does yield some pretty good fishing but will be hard to find a parking spot.
Anna point and High point will be the same if they are having tourny's that weekend as well.
So how about August 21st at the state park boat launch?
That would be awesome but the votes are tied now between innsbrook and lake Anna and it would only be fair to have some kind of tie breaker.
Or to set two dates one at one place and one at another would that work for everyone?
I think what is being done here is an awesome idea and maybe sometime in the future we can set dates for a north/south Va. meet and greet/fun tournament too and make these like a yearly thing.
Anyone else up for that or do you think it's a stupid idea.

Sounds like a great idea to me.
lake anna too big for most...most will be fishing from shore or in small jons boats maybe couple with actual bass boats...i say we keep it in a smaller body of water..and go some where so you wont have to deal with pleasure boaters . i think we have more nova voting for lake anna then central va 8-)
I've been catching fish at innsbrook recently. They are very tight to the bank right now so everyone should have success there (even though boats aren't allowed)
Since some guys don't have boats so Innsbrook would be great.
Lots of room and we can all walk around and fish together and talk to each other.
What do you all think?
Sunday may be best.
I have tournaments on August 14 and 28 plus a wedding on the 21st.
Sundays are open and usually there are no tournaments on Sundays and the office buildings are closed, too.
That Sunday the 22nd would be cool at Innsbrook.
i could handle innsbrook. but a briery and sandy day would be reeeeellllyyyyy sweet. i know everyone wants to fish briery
s13John,
Yes, any place where we need a boat would be cool to fish but we have guys who don't have boats nor have ever fished out of a bass boat which would pose a big problem.
In addition, we need one boat for every two guys which magnifies the problem.
So if we meet at Innsbrook we can see who we want to take out on our boats and plan for a private tournament on a local river or lake when the lake water levels improve.
What do you think?

I like that idea a lot and it is after all a meet and greet so you have a great point Sam.
I am not sure exactly, Where is innsbrook?
I was thinking a lot about this "get together" last night and I think if we can all get together on this we can probably come up with a meet and greet plan by next year and fish some of our favorite places 2 or 3 times so everyone can have a chance to get together.
For instance May or June Innsbrook
June or July chick
July or aug Anna
Of course these are just examples, But I think it gives all of us northern Va. guy's and girls a chance to be able to make plans ahead of time to get to one or more of these and have some fun.
I have not fished Chick yet but I have been itching to get there and Smith Mountain Lake too but I think these larger lakes need to be set up for early or late months so the boat traffic is not so bad and we can all enjoy it.

innsbrook is a good pond since not everyone has a boat as sam stated and even begginers at fishing that want to come can have success there because its easy to catch fish the harder part is to catch the ones 3.5+lbs there i have been fishing there around 40ish times always caught atleast 2 and about 6-7 of them were over 3.5lbs
I have fished only 1 of the innsbrook ponds on cox rd bc i used to work in those buildings that backed up to lake. I remember reading signs sayins you must work or be affiliated with the buildings at innbrook in order to fish but then again that was over 5yrs ago. Just wondering if anyone from the offices or that manages innsbrook area will say anything to us being that we will have a large group of people fishing at the same time?? would hate to get ran off...
Probably not.
I am one of the Community Group consultants (their office is on the lake) and I don't think we will have any problems.

sweeeet! 8-)
I pulled a couple 4 pounders out of there in the spring time, but nothing like that since it's gotten hot. I still haven't figured out a good pattern in this summer heat
QuoteI pulled a couple 4 pounders out of there in the spring time, but nothing like that since it's gotten hot. I still haven't figured out a good pattern in this summer heat
I only have success in the early morning hours or right before dark...
22nd at innsbrook works for me
Quote22nd at innsbrook works for me
Works for me as well, I agree with heading to Innsbrook for shorefishing instead of a large body of water/
I wll try to make it if innsbrook is the spot, my bassboat is down for a few weeks so I cannot fish lake anna or any other big body of water till my neighbor rebuilds my carbs >
I've been out to Lake Rooty in Innsbrook last Sunday and Monday. It's the one located on the corner of Cox and Nuckols. I caught a nice limit of LMB; most being around 3+lbs. I focused on the aquactic plants in the pond. I planned to go back out this evening and Sunday morning.
Anyone have an address I can plug into the GPS to get there? Tried looking up Innsbrook on Google, and it didn't really show me a body of water.
Gonna try to make it, but I've gotta work that night, so I don't know how long I can stay.
4222 Cox Road, Glen Allen
what's been working for you all at innsbrook? I've been hitting them with shallow crank baits, but I'm looking to try something else.
Primarily I use a chartreuse/white spinner with tandem blades; preferably a copper willow blades. Or a senko rigged wacky style or texas.
kaotic1, ever try a Chatterbait?
Not there' but I'll take one out this evening and see what it produces.
Super.
Please let us know if it is productive.
Not to productive on lake rooty this evening, it seem most of the fish was holding in deeper water. There was patches of algae in certain areas; that wasn't there last week. The heat played a major factor too; try again another day.
is it still going on this sunday and if so what time and did you guys all want to meet at the market cafe/gas station right on the corner of nuckols and cox or what we should probally start planning this out
Sounds like a plan.
I unfortunately asked off from work 8/20 to 8/22 for this meet and greet and some other reasons, and my work was kind enough to schedule me from 4pm-9:30pm fri, 8am-9:30pm sat, 11am-7:30pm sun, and 9am-2pm mon.
Screw retail. I want to find a real job. I just graduated in May with a Bachelors and its hard. I will be having a talk with them about my schedule tonight when I go in. my previous supervisor approved it, then he left and the new one denied me... >
Is there a meeting time?
thats what im trying to figure out whats a good time for everyone
7 AM?
6:30 AM?
6:00am, 6:30am, 7:30am...don't matter to me...just let me know and I'm there.
around that time works for me to
6:30?????
Is that best for all?
not as many people replying as there was at first
Give it time. It is only Wednesday.
We can meet, anyway.
Last night I got permission from wife to attend the event.
6:30 is alright, the wife and I are putting together time for it =). Do we need name-tags or a rally flag, lol?
6:30am sounds good for me. And we are meeting at the Exxon on the corner?
Sounds good to me.
Exxon at the corner of Cox and Nuckols at 6:30 AM on Sunday.
30% of thunderstorms in the afternoon so we should not have a problem.
See everyone at the Exxon station around 6:30 AM this Sunday.
Count me in, never had much luck at rooty myself, but always up for meeting new people.
See everyone then!
i'll be there
Ugh that's early... But I'll be their are their any pads or any thing their I'd like to throw a frog for a while
I'm down, haven't fished rooty in forever since getting the kayak. Should be fun!
@s13john: there are a few aquatic plants surrounding the pond that hold size bass on a good day.
Just curious, how many rods do you carry to somewhere like this?
Brian, don't over do it.
One baitcaster and one or two spinning rigs, or the other way around.
Think about what you want to throw so you don't bring 100 pounds of tackle, too.
Bring needle nose pliers; a nail clipper or sissors; a cap; sunglasses; and a smile!
went and fished this morning from 730-945 caught 3 betweeen 1-1.5lb a 2.5lb and a 4lb so 5 total but not much total weight what time are we planning on ending the tournament tomorrow
@cmatthews6485: I was out there this morning, too! Caught a 2lb and 3+lb. Was that you in the blue shirt, that walked by?
no i was wearing a hat and a long sleeve grey shirt with the sleeves pulled up i was in the back corner most of the time and then walked to the left a little
i had to step in thorns and stand next to a bush with atleast 40 bees around it to get the bass out of the water there were no open spots without thorns to bend down to pick him up
I think I remember seeing you across the water, you were on the pavilion side. I was across the lake, with purple shirt and tan khaki shorts.
i was on the opposite side of the water than the exon is
Ok, I was down behind Snag-a-job building, then I eventually came down by the fountain, but on the Exxon side of the lake.
Probably quit around 10:30 or 11 AM, depending on the weather and the fishing action.
Had great time out this morning, fellas! Eventhough, I lost two fish from bad hook sets, still better then work...lol. Where's the next spot!?
first cast i had one halfway in and spit my spinnerbait back at me 15 minutes later i had one break my line on the spinnerbait then no bites until my first cast with a shadalicious swim bait drag messed up the fish ran with the bait and jumped and spit it out because i couldnt set the hook, then later i lost that bait and no other bites i had bad luck this morning from the beginning
Good to meet you all, and good to see you again Sam. Started off slow, didn't get a hit until I went to the other side, gf called and of course I hook up. I went to pocket my phone and the fish decided to swim towards me the exact moment i took my hand off the reel. Eventually hooked up on a dink with a magic shad, and on my way out I got hit and landed another small one ~2lbs.
Definitely a great ole' time. Was great to meet you guys. Wife and I had a blast. Most of it was off and on for me. got two good bites, but didn't quite complete the hook-set. Still learning this whole soft plastic thing, but they seemed to be hitting the Ika pretty good for me. Landed one decent 2-3 pounder, but he wouldn't hold still for the scale so it's mostly guestimated. Also got some pics of the few of us fishing from the the bank. I agree! When we doing this again?!!
I thought you had left! We have to do again sometime soon.
This should definitely happen again sometime soon! I missed this one unfortunately :-/ (I hate being out of town)
@Sippi: Nice catch...better then mines...wait, I didn't land one!
I know this is a very very verrrrrrrrrrry old topic but will this happen again? I know people wanted to fish more than one lake so I figured that starting early would be probably be better.
Powhatan Lakes would be cool place to do it...have the option to fish either lake! It should serve well to small boaters and bank fisherman. 8-)
im down for a round 2 at Powhatan lakes
Alumabass,
is there a boat ramp or do you have to put a small boat in from the bank?
just looked at an aerial of Powhatan lake on Bing maps. I am not sure how old the picture is but the lake is dry. anyone know how old this is? you can get a pretty good idea of where the creek channel is.
I agree, I'm for round 2! Never been to Powhatan lakes, love to fish a new location. Are fishing from the bank or are we using small boats?
their is a ramp on both of the lakes.... good enough for most jons
yes they have 2 concrete boat ramps withs docks...1 at each lake! they also have a fishing peir/dock on both lakes with some room to walk around the banks and along the dams.
fishindrew, the dams gave way on the lakes like 4-5yrs ago and they have been rebuilt since and are both full of water and fish now!!
I figured the guys with boats fishin alone can team up with a non boater and that would get few other guys off the bank. Also i have 2 canoes i could let couple people borrow if needed. The lakes are Electric only!! Trollin motors only! Should be tons of fun!! 8-)
also i forgot to say that larger boats like bass boats should also be fine putting in there the ramps seem wide enough for most boats....with boats and bank fisherman included maybe it will be a big turn out!
id like to see this happen at lake anna so i could bring my boat up.
If the fishing is good at powhatan lakes, I'm all for going there. I have a jon, so there sounds fitting for me. What type of lake is it...flat bottom, aquatic plants, laydown tress, underwater structure, deep?
How far is it from Richmond?
QuoteIf the fishing is good at powhatan lakes, I'm all for going there. I have a jon, so there sounds fitting for me. What type of lake is it...flat bottom, aquatic plants, laydown tress, underwater structure, deep? How far is it from Richmond?
http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/waterbodies/maps/Powhatan_Lakes.pdf
Sorry, I submitted before I readover. I think it is about 30 miles west of Richmond, right off Rte. 60 after it narrows down to two lanes.
How's the fishing there, especially this time of the year? Would I be able to take trailer? I read on DGIF that rooftop and canoes, however looking the area on google maps, there were dirt roads leading to the upper lake with some cleared land to park a truck and trailer.
It is one way dirt roads, espeically to the lower lake, kind of tight. The upper lake should not be a problem to put in at.
As far as fishing goes, not sure, but I will tell you in a couple of weeks.

Fishin is pretty good there...it has a lil of everything..it has brush piles, lily pads, laydowns, and wildlife has sunk a pile of xmas trees lastyear in both lakes. There is alot of standing brush, saplings from where bottom of lake started to grow bf they refilled it again. The lake probably does not have much deep water structure but you can fish the creek beds deep. I think it would be best to hold off till late march early april or wont be no vegetation to fish and fishin should pick up by then.
Its about 30-40min ride depending what part of Richmond.

there is plenty of room to get a truck & trailer in either lake...I have full size 4 door truck with 14ft grizzly boat on a trailer and put in easily on both lakes! At each boat ramp area there is plenty of room to park and turn around for the most part. On bottom lake you just dont want to go past the ramp with a boat as it does narrow down to a tighter driveway...mostly for guys fishing off the banks but you can still put boat in bottom lake.
And as far as fishing the lakes....i would hold off till late march early april to get some vegetation going on and fishin will be prime around that time anyways!
Ok, thanks. I may just hold off for a few weeks for some of the vegetation to grow. Sounds like a promising location, plus it'll give me the opportunity to fish somewhere new.
I will be out there next weekend for shore! Not sure I will get anything, but I gotta try!
Post an update on how the conditions were and fishing. May have venture out to the lakes sooner, then planned.
will do,
why dont we just get enough guys with boats and goto anna, if yall pick anna and im not in school then ill come down and bring my boat. I just think anna will also produce bigger fish.
Quotewhy dont we just get enough guys with boats and goto anna, if yall pick anna and im not in school then ill come down and bring my boat. I just think anna will also produce bigger fish.
By the looks from last years meet up looks like majority of the guys fish off the bank and dont own a boat...dont think that will work well on Anna. 2-3 guys take off on bass boats for the day while rest stuck on the bank at some marina ;D
The bank fishing at Powhatan Lakes isn't really all that ideal. Its hard to walk around other than the dams and fishing piers.
If you head a little bit further up Rt. 60 there is the Powhatan Ponds. There are three of them with more bank fishing. They are obviously not as big, but two have primitive boat ramps.
Also, bring your tick spray and where long pants at either places. First time I went to the ponds I was pulling ticks off for a week.
I saw the ponds in DGIF and google maps. Definitely looks more accessible for bank fishing. I probably would bring my boat there. How is the fishing at the ponds?
caught this one today at innsbrook
very nice fish man, i remeber when we went, we didnt catch anything lol.
Size and numbers will be better at the Ponds due to the fact that the Lakes were only recently refilled and restocked for a couple of years.
The most important thing to remember (and I know most of you do it), but CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY at Powhatan Lakes.
The Ponds are also a great spot for kids.
Quotecaught this one today at innsbrook
Nice fish, what did you get him on? I took all my reels to get worked on and ready for the upcoming season so, I am going to have to fish through one of you guys this week.
i caught him on a lipless crankbait in red crawdad color
Thanks! I had a feeling it was a lipless, but I would not have gotten the color.
i have got more fish and my biggest fish on that bait last year than any other bait
Nice catch! Went out today (Sunday), and got sunked. Took all plastics, jigs, senkos, and jerkbaits. Nothing. Try again next weekend.
Now that is a fish, nice catch chris. Let me know what you are doing this weekend. If you are interested in possibly hitting up the river. I got a canoe if you want to try that pony pasture area we waded once
yea i wouldnt mind trying that i actually live very close to pony pasture now do you still have my number?
You guys ever head down to the end of Landry Dr.?
I am not familiar of that place, never heard of it. I usually fish the upper james. Bremo-Columbia and Hardware-Bremo and then Pony pasture/hugenot flatwater, and then downtown at belle isle and the 95bridge area.
It is right below where Pony Pasture is. If you get to PP by way of Forrest Hill. From Forest Hill heading towards the river right as the road bends to the left ( a small bank) after you pass the condos, and clear that strip mall there. Make that right, go over to blocks and make a left (onto Landary Dr.). Drive until you get to the cul-de-sac. I think it is the Jamer River Wetlands area, a good walk to get down there, but not too many people an OPEN slow water, easy to wade.
yea i have caught some decent catfish andd have seen a few snakes near landry dr
Anyone headed out Innsbrook (Lake Rooty) in the next two days?
i will be there tomorrow and saturday
I went today, around 4pm. I little windy. Caught a 2# and 3#. Lets know how you do tomorrow. Wish I could make it out. May make it out Saturday morning.
What part of the lake you catch them at and on what?
Lake Rooty, on corner on Nuckles and Cox. Anything from white/char spinners, lipless cranks, and senkos work great.
Quotecaught this one today at innsbrook
nice fish dude. congrats
thanks man its not that big but a real good size for innsbrook
thats about the size of the one u caught on my boat last spring on Anna. Speakin of which, Tammy and me have pulled some pigs out of Anna lately. We both had one over 5 on the same day and one each over 4 the next day in the same spot on the same school of fish I presume.
