Anyone havin luck on the potomac lately ? 2024

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

I took my boat out today and yesterday out of leesylvania and had no luck at all. Today we fished mattawoman and yesterday we fished around the mouth of mattawoman and no luck. My friend caught a 2 pounder off the pier at the opening of mattawoman and thats it. Anyone doing well out there ? If so where are you fishing and what are you throwing? We been using 5 inch grubs, frogs, senkos, texas rigged worms, swim jigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, rattletraps, football jigs, sweet beavers, pretty much everything but the kitchen sink. Man it was so easy to catch fish 6 weeks ago. Seems like the summer patterns are dead finally so now what ? This weather is kinda inbetween and I can't seem to figure these fish out or even get on top of them to begin with :-/

fishing user avatarThai reply :

Dan, Slip Gun and myself went out today, water was still very murky from the rains and didnt have a chance to warm up much yet. But we were still able to put a few fish in the boat, slip gun caught a very beautifully bass with black dots all over it on a chatter bait out of the dying emergent growth in about 3' of water, I landed 2 bass on spinnerbaits and 2 stripers on a popper

Things should be better by thursday once the sediments begin to settle and water warms up a bit. We'll try our luck again then.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Where were you guys fishing today ? What color on the spinner bait and chatter baits and what kinda retrieve ? Im plannin on goin out again thursday and then this weekend imma go to my place on the warm side of lake anna and see if my luck is any better. I'm shocked to go two days out there in a row without one single bite. I talked to 3 other ppl out on the water today and 2 of them said they caught one and other guy said he didnt catch any at all. You must know something the rest of us dont know  ;D

fishing user avatarThai reply :

my fist spinnerbait fish came on a 1/8 double blade that I colored a mix of purple & reds on a slow retrieve at about 2' in about 3' of water, second was on a 1/2 screaming eagle in watermelon color casted by some dying weeds and was taken right after impact. We had a couple more bites but missed them. As far as locations I'm not going to disclose exacts but in the Mount Vernon stretch of the river

Don't forget David's fish was on a chartreuse chatterbait. I honestly don't think color mattered yesterday, I think most of the fish just weren't where we were fishing.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Gettin on top of the fish seems to be the problem. I know of all the things I was throwing that something would have to work if only I could get on top of the fish. I'm gonna bring some tubes out tommorow and see what happens. I also need to hook up my humminbird 797 to help me find some of these fish, I just been lazy since I got it. Its collecting dust. I been sick since mid August and just started fishing again. Before I got sick the grass was green, the water was clear and catching fifteen 2-3 pounders a day was realistic. Now I'm just depressed when I go out there. Nothing but murky water and dead grass. Heck I'd settle for 3 or 4 two pounders and call it a day at this point.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

Why not go target the schoolie striper for a bite fix, they greedily attack topwater lures this time of year

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

went out again today and caught nothing. I did lose one on a grub and one on a spro frog and those were my only 2 hits. My friend who fishes with me usually caught two 1 pounders, both on 1/8 ounce buzzbaits. After runnin and gunnin all day we found a good spot where he caught his 2 fish. There was 4 other boats there all fishing but that didnt stop me.

I figured out the fish there want small buzzbaits fished slowly and soft body frogs, mostly stanley ribbits reeled in steady. So tommorow we're headed out early and slammin this spot with buzzbaits, frogs and maybe even some senkos thrown in. My friend lost 3 fish in a row that he got skimmin a senko on top of the water.

Anyone fish the rage tail toads on the potomac? What about the Paca Toads? I'm bout to pick up a few packs of the Lake Fork Tackle "Fork Frogs" and the Rage tails and see how they do. I been tryin the Paca Toads and they are great when you can keep them from goin belly up. I'm lookin for the perfect soft frog right now since that seems like my best bet. The horny toads seem to work ok but the feet break off constantly.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1256257719

that was yesterday

You got to find a pattern man, and find the grass that hasnt died yet, there will be bass still in it

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

If only I could find alot of green grass then I might get on top of some fish. My fishing buddy couldnt go this morning so I didnt go either. If anyone wants to go out today or in the next few days then lemme know. I have a 16 foot boat with a 50hp, gets the job done.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

Im down for fishing anytime you want to go man, today New Angler and myself went to one of my spots from shore, we cuaght around 7 fish in 4 hours or so

fishing user avatarLHC - Bank Robber reply :

Theres still some fish in grass around mount vernon/ little hunting creek mouth, ive been getting at least one or two throwin a swamp donkey.  Also soft buzz type frogs are working for me.  I fished the bank on hunting creek a few days ago, landed 20+ striper, none very big still fun though.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

It's gonna rain pretty hard tommorow, you think the water will be too muddy on sunday ? If so then maybe monday or tuesday mornin if thats cool with you. Send me a pm and tell me what day you can go. Monday thru friday shows all mid-upper 60's 5 days in a row with no rain. I intend on goin out at least 3 days next week if not 4.

Also gonna be checkin out a stratos 201 this weekend down in richmond and if all goes well Im gonna have myself a 21 foot bass boat 8-) If it doesnt work out then no biggie, I just have to launch out of somewhere up north like bellehaven marina. Tryin to get up towards alexandria and fort washington on the river at 28 miles per hour on my boat isnt fun coming from leesylvania. And from what I been hearing lately, the better action is further up north on the river.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

Yeah lets plan a trip for Monday then, gives the water a little time to clear, but I'm free throughout the week and am usually out fishing. We can launch your boat from a place I know of in the creek if you want man

fishing user avatarsoccplayer07 reply :

the bite at mt vernon is hot right now. lots of fish to be had.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

yeah newangler and myself went out for a few hours today and the bite was deffinitely on

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Ok just tell me where to meet up with ya and I'll be there. I just gotta hit the road early to beat 95 north traffic coming from hoodbridge. Weather.com shows monday thru friday with some great weather. This comin week might be the last really nice week of weather for a long time.

I'm also hittin bass pro shops tommorow on the way to go see that stratos boat Im lookin at. Anyone know if they carry the new stradic ci4 there yet ? Gonna pick up some frogs and 1/8 ounce buzzbaits. And I lost my only black/blue chatterbait the other day when I got a birds nest mid cast and my bait snapped off midair  :o You think I should bother gettin another one or will the chartreuse one I have work better now ?

fishing user avatarshimmy reply :

hmm...i notice that no one ever talks about fishing the bridges. That always fascinates me. I have had some of the best luck in my life at those good ol happy spots of mine on the Potomac. Yet, that was back in the day when my fam lived here and had a boat. Knock em dead boys.

Shimmy

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

actually my fishing partner fishes the woodrow wilson bridge a few mornings a week and usually catches 5-10 fish there between 2-5 pounds. I just havent gotten up there yet. Potomac Angler has a few good spots within 15 minute boat ride from the bridge so Im sure we'll hit that up on monday while we're makin our rounds. Im headed out in about an hour to go see a 21 foot stratos in Chester VA so who knows, I might be rocking a new ride on the water this week. I just gotta figure out where the heck Im gonna store both my boats in my driveway.

That sounds sweet Steve, good luck with the stratos man, and if you run out of room in your driveway for two boats, theres always mine man  ;)

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Got my stratos! Now Im ready to tear up some bass and snakeheads. Oh ya  ;D

fishing user avatarsoccplayer07 reply :

congrats. you'll crush my ranger...thats for sure.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

nah not really. It does 65 with one person or maybe 62 with 2 people and a tournament load. Its not that fast for a stratos. Back then they only came with a 200hp motor. If it had a 250 then I could see it doing 75-80 but thats too fast for me. Im happy goin 60 right thru choppy water . I took that boat thru some rough choppy windy conditions today and it handled like a dream. Didnt feel any bumps like I have in javelins and rangers I ridden in. Not to mention that was my first time ever drivin a fiberglass bass boat. That boat is easy to drive . Im beyond happy. Its also in immaculate condition, not one single stress crack anywhere.

No one is ready for their first snakehead blow up. lol

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Oh trust me I'm ready. I got my blade on my hip too ready to stick it right thru the back of their ugly lil heads. It's time to feed the raccoons. Im gonna take the boat on a short test run later today by my house. Then tommorow it's time to have some fun.

But how will you cut it without getting blood all over your new boat? You should just throw it in your livewell and take it home to eat. Heck, give it to Thai and he can eat it or I'll take it. They are pretty good eating

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

I keep hearing how good they taste. I guess I dont know what Im missing, I think I'll pass on eating anything out of the potomac tho.

LOL, I get what you're saying but one fish should be alright. I've got one in the freezer but I probably won't eat too many others within the month.

At the rate you're consuming them I think we should have them eradicated by spring!

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

Well only two have been filleted. The second one (the tagged one) was tossed in the trash.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

what are we gonna be throwing tommorow anyways, I forgot to ask u earlier when we talked. I'm bringin most of my gear anyways just cuz I have room for it all, even tho I wont use 90 percent of it. I wanna have my go-to lures readily available tho. Anyone here launch out of bellehaven before, Im curious how nice their boat ramp is and if it's steep. Oh and bring a pair of sunglasses since youre gonna be sittin in the middle  ;D The wind is a real beatch

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

Let me guess, he's probably going to throw a spinnerbait and a frog or a frog and a spinnerbait.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

d**n right I'll be throwing a spinner! Its my best producing lure this time of year! Prob wont throw a frog unless I see signs of snakeheads but i prob wont even change lures since you cant...well I cant fail with a spinner. And sadley my equipment isnt up to par with you guys since I never thought you really needed a rod for every occasion but that doesnt stop me from catching fish. As far as sunglasses I dont even own a pair because i always thought they looked stupid on me but I also cant say ive been 65mph on the water before....40 was bareable lol

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

dont worry I have several spare pairs of polarized fishing sunglasses so I will try and remember to bring a pair for ya. Im goin to be wearin my save phace mask to keep my entire mug wind free. Im ugly enough without a ton of bugs splattered all over my face :-[ And if you have a throw-in flotation pad, the kind you can sit on, then bring it. They help absorb some shock when we hit the 3 foot chop at full speed. Im gonna hit the sack now so I can get up by 9 30 and start gettin ready. Gonna be mid 60's tommorow with 5-8 mph winds so we should be ok.

Thanks Steve, as far as choppy ride, ive never had a problem with the roughness, i've always used my knees as a shock absober lol my butt doesnt touch the seat on impact  :)

fishing user avatarVolFan reply :

If your boat's very big, make sure you hit the marina when the tides in somewhat, otherwise it's very tough to lauch (if not impossible).  The grass around there is pretty hot lately.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

low tide for alexandria virginia is at 9:16 am today and high tide is at 3:14 pm so what do you think ? If we launch at 11 am will that be high enough tide to launch my boat out of bellehaven ? It is a big boat with a deep hull as far as bass boats go. And not only is this my first time launching out of that marina but its my first time launching this boat since I bought it this weekend. Do you think I would be better off launching from a ramp Im more familiar with like at leesylvania state park ? I know those ramps well and have launched my aluminum boats out of there dozens of times.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

I can not say how deep the ramp is but I can tell you for a fact that the area around belle haven is shallow I dont know whether or not it's too shallow but it seems Volfan has been been there.....

But if we are launching at 11:00 as scheduled the tide should be somewhere in the middle and launching might be more easily done than we're making it out to be

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Ok now Im thinkin bout pohick bay to launch also. Anyone know how theur ramps are ? That also puts me right between my neck of the woods and fort washington and mount vernon.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

Pohick has great long ramps with a gentle incline

We used to launch our 25" Tige there all the time in low and hide tide not a single problem

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Is the ramp still open there tho this time of year ? I looked on their website and it says the main gate is closed after october 13 except for weekends. They dont make it clear whether or not you can launch a boat there right now

http://www.nvrpa.org/parks/pohickbay/?pg=hours.html

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Ok nevermind, I called and we're good to go. So pohick bay it is. See ya there at 10:45ish. Its free to park your car there and we'll split the launch fee of 8 bux  ;D

fishing user avatarThai reply :

i just asked my friend he said we can launch and theres a small launch fee

fishing user avatarsoccplayer07 reply :

i launch at pohick at dead low tide...no problems. great ramp.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

we launched out of pohick no problem at 11 am. We pulled ten fish in the boat between thai, me and my ole lady. One was a yellow perch tho so it doesnt really count  ;) Not bad for an afternoon in late october. We all also lost a few so we could have easily had 15 in the boat. Headed back out on thursday and friday. Stratos took the river like a hot knife thru butter. low 60's mph with 3 people with only a shooter 4 blade prop. Gonna get a nicer prop and get'er up to high 60's at least.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

Yesterday was an excellent day on th water, saw plenty of bass in a spot we arent going to disclose :)

Thanks again Steve for taking me out with you, and glad you broke that dry spell!

We deff have to do it again soon before the water freezes over!

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

ya I forgot to mention that, we saw between 50-75 adult bass all between 2-5 pounds swimmin all around the boat. We were literally right on top of several schools of hungry bass. Thats the most bass I have ever seen anywhere other then the tanks at bass pro shops. Next time Im gonna flip some creature baits and jigs and see what happens. Shooting for thursday and or friday depending on weather and if I can get at least one person to come that knows how to back a trailer up when I launch the boat and bring it back in. My ole lady usually does that but she's gonna be working on friday.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

Ive done it a few times but I sucks at backing one up...

But Slip gun and i fihsed that spot today from shore, the bite is still HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT!

fishing user avatarLHC - Bank Robber reply :

Today the bite was on pretty good at high tide in the grass, got a few on top with a buzz jet jr, but weightless senkos were killin them

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

well I got someone coming to look at my aluminum boat tommorow or else I would consider goin out tommorow. I really need to get it sold before it kills a huge spot in my lawn  :-/ I went to bass pro shops and gander mountain today and dropped about a hundred and fifty bux on some more soft frogs, some crawfish baits and a few knock off senkos called slurpies. Also got some flukes in shad colors as suggested by potomac angler. I just need to find the right kinda weighted hooks to keep the soft frogs from goin belly up when I reel'em in. Think when I hit the water on thursday Im gonna go early in the mornin like I did all summer. Actually I hit the water at 6:30 am during the summer, probably be closer to 8 when I go out thursday. I'll see how the early bite is at the secret spot  ;D

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

wow who's this shady lookin dude in the pic holdin that purdy lil fish

Oh and check out the even shadier dude circled on shore. I think he was up to no good but we were catchin fish so I could care less  ::)

Just thought I'd share this gorgeous sunrise pic from earlier this summer. It was taken at one of the ramps at leesylvania state park around 6:15 one morning. We went out that morning and caught about 40 bass up in fort washington.

post-22834-130162944284_thumb.jpg

fishing user avatarThai reply :

sweet pics lol, I love how you circled the guy and girl in the back there lol

so did you end up finding anyone to go out with you tomorrow?

No way you caught fish at Fort washington in all that mess lol!

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

summer bass, only went a lil over 2 pounds but still fun to catch

post-22834-130162944314_thumb.jpg

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Thats weird, I circled that shady dude in the background but didnt think anyone could see it. Nah I dont have anyone to go out with tommorow that can help me with the trailer. I just dont feel confident enough yet to do it on my own. Tammy has one dog to groom tommorow at 10 am and then she said she might wanna go. But that wont be till like noon. If we do go then we might just go out of leesylvania, not sure yet. The weather forecast a few days ago said tommorow was gonna be 71 and now it says 61 for my zip code!! Down your way its only supposed to be 59 which really sux. I'm gonna wait and see how it feels outside around 11 am and then make up my mind. I'll keep you posted

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

wait, so what was going on with the shady dude?

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

There were actually multiple shady people in that same spot thru out the day. One was the guy in all black in the pic and the other was some guy tryin to get somethin from his girl ;) Appears they tried to find a private spot where no one would see them but we happen to be fishing there. I guess the backseat of a car is no longer the norm, guess Im just old fashioned

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

wow, that's smart. That spot ALWAYS has people there.

fishing user avatarLHC - Bank Robber reply :

was the guy in all black fishing, sounds a bit like me and I do frequent that spot.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Didnt look like he was fishing to me. Were you out there that day right next to that lil bridge ? Whoever it was, he wasnt there for more then maybe an hour.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

I was fishing that little bridge for a couple hours yesterday, all the big bass were right there in a little hole just teasing me, I got one to take a senko and when i went to set the hook it ripped right out of its mouth...it's ten times worst when you can see it all take place.

the striper were hitting big time too

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

Thai, I like the name change but you need some form of punctuation at the end. All the cool kids do it.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

No thanks Dan comma, I'll let the next Thai to join be the cool one ;D

Coulda been me.  Skinny guy, halfro, butt naked???

Glad to hear that the bite seems pretty consistently ON for a while at least.

I'll be in Tx this weekend and prob wont even have time to fish   :(     Such injustice!  An hour or so from Lake Fork and 15-30min from several great fisheries.  Well I hope I can get in a morning or evening at the least???

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

yeah yesterday Dan and I went to some ponds and caught over 40 bass!

Then I went to the river afterwards and caught a few

That was the biggest from Lake "X."

....although it was the biggest of about 30 on a cold, windy morning.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

They aren't necessarily private, just secret.

Many times that I've "spread the love" around here someone else ends up spreading my love farther than I wanted to.

Obviously there's a few exceptions but I have a few lakes that I don't take other people to until I've fished with them a few times to decide if I can trust them or even want to fish with them in the future.

Me and my ole lady took the stratos out today but only for about 2 hours. She had to pee the entire time and I was gettin mad annoyed. So all I caught was one 2 pound striper under the bridge on a rattle trap. Then tammy decides she wants to throw one too. So I gave her my sol spinning setup that I was throwin and of course within 5 casts of bangin up my rattle trap on the bridge she broke the lure in half. That was my fave rattle trap too, a moment of silence please  :'( The water was chocolate milk and the fish just werent there today. So I ended up takin her back so she could pee, that was my excitement for the day. the end

sall good, since she's an artist, Im gonna have her custom airbrush some of my other rattle traps to look like the other and paint a bunch of my crankbaits while she's at it. I wish I knew where in mount vernon you caught 9 fish in 2 hours soccplayer, I saw nothing but muddy water when I was there yesterday, I didnt even so much as see a largemouth bass in the 2 hours I was there. Im hopin the water will clear up by today or tommorow so I can try my luck again. What were you catchin them on ?

Up in the creek the last few days has been tough, try the grass just north of the creek,  I had about 7 or 8 today before tide started going out and they shut down (the hot bait was a fluke).

fishing user avatarThai reply :

sorry to burst your bubble Steve but that water isnt likely to clear anytime soon, if you look closely at it its isnt muddy it's stained from the tannins in the falling leaves...which acts as a natural buffer and actually lowers the p.h which depending on previous levels from the past rains might make it more comfortable for the fish. And the stained water will make let them feed more comfortable as you cant see them as easily.

Forget about being able to see the bass since that means they can see you and just throw some senkos or flukes and wait for the inevitable bite.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

I didnt even try throwin the flukes yesterday , maybe I should have. Are you guys using weights with flukes and if so what weight and what hook ? I had one rigged up weightless, just never threw it.  The weekend and monday are gonna be great for fishing, mild temps but more importanly hardly any wind at all. Today is agood day too with winds around 5-7 mph. I cant stand fishing in the wind from my boat, I end up constantly on the trolling motor and I can never stay in one good spot for more then a minute or too without drifting.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

oh and btw, Tammy threw senkos for 2 hours and didnt even get a nibble.

Most were on swimbaits. 2 on frogs.

oh and another thing, theres a family of mexicans that fishes next to that bridge and they keep everything they catch including a baby striper yesterday. There wasnt much I could do since I was on my boat . We watched them put a striper in their bucket that couldnt have been more then 8-10 inches long. If you guys are fishing from shore there , please be aware of that kinda thing. It really effs up the population and is illegal.

That the one thing that irks me the most, i know they are trying to feed their families and all but seriously get a license and abide by the regulations...

If I ever see them down their I will be making a call to the game warden, taking fish or not I'm still calling since chances are good they are unlicensed and they always leave their trash down there

Try Belmont Bay. It was very clear Sunday - Tuesday.  It may be closer than M. Vernon/L. Hunting Cr. if you're launching from Pohick, and is definitely closer if you launch from one of the Occoquan marinas.

Weightless 90% of the time, the size of hook depends on the size of the fluke, usually 2/0-4/0 offset shank (I like Owners).  The other 10% would be C-rigged or w/ a circle hook through the nose.

Try the salty shads from Case Plastics: I feel they are superior to flukes.  They are of a different consistency/density than Zoom flukes. Think of a fluke made out of senko-like plastic.  IMO, they are thus heavier and cast easier than flukes.

Bass love clear water esp on the potomac. Stained water isnt nearly as bad as chocolate water tho. Once the water gets dark then the sun stops hittin the grass and it dies. Thats why the places with clearer water right now have greener grass and way more fish. They love the oxygen in the green stuff. I noticed when I took thai to my grassbed at fort washington all the grass was dead and the water was brown. Total waste of time. I only fish the clear and stained stuff. And I know thai said the water was stained out there but infact alot of it was brown also. I'm gonna give belmont bay a try since its a mile or two from leesylvania. Im not gonna keep payin to launch out of pohick when I have an annual pass to lessylvania. It's addin up fast.

the lack of light kills the grass within a few days? that doesn't sound right.

But either way, I get the point, dead grass=no bass and I definitely agree with that one.

re: Pohick, you could always get the all-year pass for Pohick as well. I don't know how the expiration works (year from purchase or end of the calendar year) but it could be a good investment.

Not to mention they sink better, hence the "Sinkin' Salty Shad" name. They are great baits when you want to fish a little deeper than a traditional fluke, but as with senkos, they seem to be less durable (not that flukes are all that durable themselves).

I have been using Wave Tiki Shaddicks lately. They are fairly tough, and they have great action.

If you want to fish deeper, just grab some 4/0 or 5/0 keel weighted hooks in 1/8 or 1/16oz. I use them a lot for flukes. As long as you rig them straight they will still allow the fluke to walk side to side at a deeper depth.

Thats not the reason why the water was muddy at Ft. Washington that one day, i believe it has to due with lack of water circulation, lack of circulation means nutrient rich silt wouldnt be deposited in quantitys that creek mouths get like the mount vernon area. Which might also be why the grass in alot of places are dead and brown while mount vernon is still alive. And without live plants the natural filtration process is slowed. As far as light reaching the plants, at depths we see in the potomac light esp in the 5000k-10000k spectrum, (which is what freshwater plants need) wouldnt have a problem penetrating murky water.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

So what's killing the grass? Colder water?

fishing user avatarThai reply :

colder water deff, but some places the plants have been able to live a little longer due to good circulation and nutrients

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

I feel ya Thai, Im just goin on what a local guide told me. The fall/winter sun is weak right now and the grass just isnt gettin nearly as much light and less direct sunlight for sure. During the spring and summer you have 11 am till 3 pm for peak sunlight, thats the brightest and warmest part of the day. Right now you dont have that at all. It doesnt get brighter and warmer thruout the early afternoon like it was a few months ago. Im sure what youre sayin is true but theres alot of truth to what Im sayin as well. And ya a few days of low light can affect how plants grow. If it rains and is windy for several days in a row you can get crappy clarity for many days. The wind affects water clarity as much as the rain does. I seen it happen esp in areas with alot of bluffs such as fort washington where those bluffs wash right down into the river when it rains. Mt vernon doesnt have those bluffs and therfore less dirt to wash into the river. Im just using logic here , I'm no expert on the vegetation in the river. I know the colder water has alot to do with it too of course. I think its a combination of factors. Everything you said def makes sense tho.

I keep expecting the topwater bite to get better as the day goes but the last two days only hits on top were both right around sunrise. Around 9:30 the bite died down so I headed up to hunting creek, fished for hours. I Only caught one nice lg mouth on a spinnerbait.

anyways I've been to riverside park once, didn't have any luck . so you are allowed to fish Little Hunting? it looked like it was private to residents or something

Yea you can get down on all side of the bridge,  but off the front at riverside has been my most productive spot this year, you just gotta catch high tide.

The mouth side where water feeds into the creek has been the most productive part of riverside for shore fishing this year. Fish the side closer to Mount Vernon, you have access to more holes on that side.

I always got room for you dude . And you do know my house on lake anna is on the warm side. The fishing there should be gettin good in the next month. The only issue is the water level. I was there a few days ago to pick up some mail and the water was down at least 18-24 inches. I did observe one 8 inch bass chasing around hundreds of baitfish and he couldnt catch one dang minnow, poor fella. Im thinkin bout goin out tommorow but still unsure. If I do go then Im goin out from lessylvania and hittin belmont and mattawoman.

Hi All,

Just wanted to chim in and start by thanking everyone for the great information being shared on this thread. I moved to the NOVA area a little over a year ago from Rochester NY. I have been fishing the Potomac from my cedarstrip canoe mostly out of Algonkian and Point of Rocks. I've also been to Occoquan, Lake Anna and Beaver Creek Resevoir. Excellent results during the summer, not so great lately. I haven't tried the tidal region yet, but am planning to.

I tried Riverbend last weekend, which was a bust, high muddy water. No bites at all.

I only started fishing the last two years. It now looks like the fishing bug has really sunk its claws into me, and I am planning on going up to the next level and purchase a bass boat. I am seeing a lot of really great bargains on Craiglist, but I am relative uneducated on what to look out for. I think I have the basics covered:

Must have clear title

Engine runs good. More HP is better.

Trolling motor and electronics.

No leaks

Trailer in good shape

Any other important criteria I should be checking?

I have never actually been out on a bass boat. I would love to go out with someone who has a bass boat to get a feel for what features are good/bad as I make this decission. Please PM me if you would like to take a fellow fishing addict out fishing some weekend. Short notice, but I am available tomorrow (Saturday Nov 7) if someone is planning on going out and wants some company.

Are you leaning towards glass or aluminum? I recommend that you have a mechanic check the engine out prior to your purchase (around $200). Depending on the age of the boat make sure you check the transom very thoroughly. I just changed mine and it is not a fun process. If the motor and transom check out you are good to go.Take your time and don't settle. I hate to say it but plan on many unexpected costs (the joy of owning a boat)!Good luck

welcome to the area Steve, I'm Steve too actually. If you wanna send me links for any of the boats you are lookin at then feel free. I'm a craigslist deal master and I have done plenty of used bass boat shopping. I bought all 3 of the boats I owned this year from craigslist. Most recently I bought an immaculate stratos 201 for 5300 bux which was a steal. What soccplayer said is correct, transom and motor need to be sound. Alot of fiberglass bass boats used wood in the transom up till the late 90's and even a few until 2002. Im not sure but I think all the major brands are 100 composite now. I do troll craigslist daily for deals on boats even tho I dont plan on buying another one for a few years. Lemme know what you're interested in and I will tell you as much as I can.

General rule of thumb- aluminum boats drift alot in the wind . They are light, easy to tow, easy on gas and cheap to insure also. However when your fishing partner is movin around sometimes you will stumble across the deck, they arent very stable. They also dont handle choppy water nearly as well esp when you're sittin in a spot fishing and a big boat goes by you 100 feet away, hold on for dear life.Older riveted boats can be leaky, a test drive is a must imo. You can however get into real shallow water and bumpin logs is no biggie as long as they dont hit the motor when youre moving along. If you are fishing small lakes, private lakes and non tidal water then you're good to go for the most part. If you plan on fishing potomac and lake anna then you might wanna think long and hard about aluminum.

Fiberglass bass boats fish better, ride better , fish alot more stable, drift less in the wind(still drift tho) and go way faster usually. But you gotta look out for logs, debris, etc...They cost more to insure but its still cheap. I just gotta sweet policy with 300,000 coverage for 300 dollars a year. There is more to maintain but it's like a car, just keep up with it and you will have minimal problems.

If you have a bad back or knees then fiberglass is a better option. Dont skimp if you buy a glass boat tho. Anything less then 18 and a half feet and you're wasting your time. If you wanna fish the potomac alot then there are 3 brands to look out for, the 3 best rough water rides in the business- champion, basscat and stratos. Those are big water boats. Ranger is a great boat but the ride cant even compare, I know from experience. Ranger's qaulity however is number one, they hold the most value therefore they come out to be a lil overpriced when lookin at used ones. Not sayin they arent worth every penny, but they are better suited for smaller water imo. I rode in the top of the line 21 foot ranger a few months back with an experienced FLW pro who knew how to drive and it was a lil rough on the potomac. Wasnt terrible like a pro craft or nitro but wasnt anything like my stratos, not even close. They do fish amazing tho, most stable boat I have been on when fishing. Less tipsy then my stratos for sure.

Hope this all makes sense, if you need anything feel free to PM me. Oh and I know some ranger owners might chime in and bash what I said but thats to be expected.

Good ideas to think about. In particular, I hadn't thought about the transom, (mentioned by soccplayer). But that makes a lot of sense, the transom has to be the single most stressed point on the boat (unless you hit something)!

I will follow up with PM on boats I am looking at, I don't want to take the toppic of this thread too far off course. But I will mention that in general I plan on starting cheap, $2500 to $4000. This way, if I make a blunder, it isn't too expensive. And then after I use it for a year or two, I will have a real idea of exactly what I want, and then make a more substantial commitment.

Amazingly, I am seeing fiberglass boats (18 ft, 100+ hp) in the price range I mentioned above.

revos are pretty awsome.  the bite was tough today I tossed everything I had at em and only got two bites, and only caught one striper, i gotta get up and early and hit the front tomorrow.

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

It was indeed skunk city. And I passed through backlashville, too. Rough.

You guys ever hear of Widewater..? Found it on a map close to me here in stafford. Gonna head out there tomorrow morning around 10

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Ya I know all about backlashville, I pass thru everytime I pick up my curado, exactly why I just got rid of it in favor of another fuego, never a single backlash with any of my daiwas  ;D daiwa > shimano

tonite is a good nite tho, I got a deposit on my aluminum bass boat I been tryin to sell, I get the rest of the money tommorow and off she goes for good. Back on topic tho, I probably wont fish tommorow but sunday is lookin good. Should be 70 degress with virtually no wind. I think I have a full boat but not 100 percent sure. You down for some action on sunday thai if I have room ? I just gotta find out if my buddy is goin to the wizards game sunday at 1pm or not. If not then I def have room for one more.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

70 degrees....

I'm so down if you have room just give a call tomorrow night and we'll go from there!

fishing user avatarsteveb1 reply :

Since several people had mentioned it, I went down to Riverside Park and tried fishing at Little Hunting Creek. I used Google Map, and it looked like I could get my canoe into the water at Riverside. Unfortunately, the shoreline was just a little to rocky and steep for me to the canoe into the water. Went over and shore fished the creek for a while, but no luck. Someone came by in a bass boat and tried the other shore for about a half hour. He didn't have any luck either.

Got in the car and headed up to Gravelley Point. I was going to put the canoe in at the boat ramp, but the wind had really kicked up by then. Shore fished off the dock, but no luck. There looks like a culvert leading over to a bird sanctuary on the other side of Washington Pkwy. There were two people down by the culvert and several more fishing off the dock. No one caught anything while I was there. The culvert looks high enough for me to get my canoe through. Does any one know if fishing is allowed in the bird sanctuary? Anyone have any luck fishing at Gravelley Point?

Going to try Riverbend again tomorrow.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

fishing is allowed at the sanct. its shallow enough too wade out in the middle, best bet is in during the warmer months, there are some big fish to be had there

as far as fishing little hunting from a canoe heres a spot you can launch from

fishing user avatarLHC - Bank Robber reply :

gravelly point, is that roaches run?  If so ive been there once or twice and never really had much luck. But if you put your canoe in up there you'll be in dc waters and need a dc license (just something to remember).  Ive heard the bird sanctuary is a carp pond, never fished it though.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

I have room for one person to go out with me tommorow on my bass boat. You must have experience backin a trailer/boat into the water as well as loading one up which entails backin up an empty trailer into the water perfectly straight and then hand winching the boat up and securing it. I dont powerload my boat when I bring it in, not good enough at it yet :-? This is a 20+ foot dual console bass boat. So if you wanna head out of lessylvania tommorow around 10:30 am then lemme know. Oh and be prepared to throw down 10 or 12 bux for gas. I have an annual launch pass so thats taken care of already. send me a pm, I will check my messages when I wake up tommorow and when i go to bed in a few hours. Its gonna be 70 degrees or so tommorow, no rain and almost no wind.

fishing user avatarmantis1 reply :

420, Thai, etc.

I can launch and load. I've had a bowrider (18) for 7 years now and use it alot.

My fishin buddy has a Whaler (19). Launch and load it too.

I hope to go out  Mon. on mine.

Maybe Tues on mine ... if I don't go on out with my bud on his.

Wed. is already planned.

Who is available Mon? or Maybe Tues?

Or Wed. if plans change?

Last ride for mine. She has to be winterized.

PM please.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Sent you a PM mantis. Im headed out right now with my buddy, we're gonna launch out of reagan airport ramps. Do some DC fishing, should be good. I hear the water is clear up that way and we might even catch some smallies. Oh and Go Ravens!!

I am looking to go fishing Monday if anyone has room on a boat or knows a good shore spot this time of the year.  If anyone is up for it, PM me.  Mantis, sent you a PM already.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

what a freakin day :-? we did well fishing in the 3 hours we were out. I caught 7 nice ones but my buddy only caught 4. All were caught on stanley wedge spinner baits, the smallest ones they makes. I caught the last 3 in a 10 minute span right near where we launched at the airport., 2 on consecutive casts. The fish are lovin spinner baits right now for sure. We didnt even get a nibble on anything else we threw. The spinnerbait was the last thing I tried . So if we had both been throwing it all day then we have caught alot more.

The flip side is I lost my cell phone, might be in the river, not sure. And I busted up my propeller, I must have hit something. Oh and my boat stalled out 3 times when I was tryin to load it on the trailer, not sure what that was all about. First time it has done that. And to to top it all off, I cannot find my annual launch pass to va state parks which covers leesylvania >:( And last but not least, the Ravens lost, what a day

I do have insurance , I got it thru that guy from the insurance forum, Bob. Covers everything but I dunno if its even worth reporting. I can get a nice used prop for 200 bux or so. Plus who knows how long it could take to do a claim, I wanna new prop asap. I was about to get one anyways to pick up a few mph. I could just repair my prop, its not trashed but it has a chunk thats folded pretty bad. I will probably sell it as is or repair it and keep it for a spare. Its just a shooter SS prop, kinda ole skool. Might be the original prop actually.

Oh and Im using johnson oil which is made for my motor. I think Im gonna take my boat in just to make sure everything is cool. I should do that anyways. It runs great, planes fairly fast and hauls *** but its better to be safe then sorry.

I wonder if the extreme angle my boat was sittin at had anything to do with it stalling. Maybe a clogged fuel filter ? I ran out of gas the other day on the water and then switched over to my other tank which was full. So maybe I sucked all the junk out of the bottom of the tank up when I ran out ? That could clog the fuel filter right ?

Those ramps at reagan airport are the steepest and worst I have ever seen. It was very difficult to load my boat there compared to pohick bay. Thats the last time I ever launch out of there for sure. Yikes :-[

Oh and Thai always catches fish, but today for once I caught more then him. I can get used to that

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

a few pics from today, nothing huge but most were around 2 pounds and a few one and a half. Not bad for a 1/8 ounce spinner bait. If I hadnt run out of spinner baits I would fished more, I lost both of the ones I had so had to stop fishing, nothing else was even getting a bite. I just hit walmart earlier tho and bought about a dozen so Im good to go for now. Gotta KVD 1/2 ounce spinnerbait on clearance for 25 cents !! Wish they had more then one tho, I would have bought them all.

I fished for half an hour, 6 fish, so a fish every 5 minutes ;)

How long were you out for again?!?!? lol!

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

dangit ! Oh well I try. We were out for 3 hours. I started throwing the spinner after we left blue plains. So I threw it for 2 hours maybe a lil less. Still not bad tho for 2 hours, one fish every 20 minutes average which for me lately is very good. I ended up losin both my spinnerbaits on very hard casts where they just snapped off. My line was old tho, about 5 months and knicked up bad. Thats what I get for being lazy and not changin it. If I had more spinnerbaits I would have fished more, such is life. Im no pro like you Thai but all in due time  ;D Thanks for the tips on the spinnerbaits tho. Im startin to like throwin them, esp the 1/8 ounce

Oh hey man wsup. Ya that was me that launched right before you. We went to the sailing marina and found some fish there, no giants but nice ones. That spot where the ramps are is chalk full of 2 pounders . I could have stayed there and caught 20 more . Someone loading their boat up told me they got chased out of there once tho, not sure who chased em tho. It doesnt say you cant fish there tho. So who knows.

We went out today for 6 hours and didnt catch anything. I had one hit a senko at the mouth of mattawoman and one on a stanley ribbit over by pomonkey but he spit the frog due to my horrible hook set. Im no frog guru  :( Seems like the fish were nowhere to be found today. I managed to break a rattle trap on the bridge at hunting creek and then right after I snagged my river2sea rattletrap that I paid alot of money for!!! What crappy luck with me and rattle traps. Think I will stick to baits that dont have treble hooks, they're bad luck with me in general. My body is sore from 2 straight days of fishing. So Im gonna take a break for a few days. I usually have my girl with me when I fish but shes been busy workin lately so Im down for whatever. Send me a PM.

fishing user avatarLHC - Bank Robber reply :

I hit up the front of riverside with a buddy and we got  about 15 between us, all fish came on 3inch senkos.  Sadly im not sure we cracked two pounds with any of them.   Around dark and low tide the frog bite turned on but damnd if i could hook up,  missed two nice ones.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

3 inch senkos eh. dang I havent broken those out in a while. Guess I should. What color were u using ?

fishing user avatarThai reply :

Steve usually you can catch Striper on spinners, poppers, and rattle traps all day at the mouth of Pomonkey bro

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

I did throw a spinnerbait there but not a rattle trap or popper. We didnt so much as even see any baitfish where we were. Then we went out from the mouth and fished the grass along the left side there and thats where I gotta frog hit. I need to get you out there with me again so we can try some other spots. I'd be down for some shore fishing tommorow if youre goin out. Im def way too sore to get on a boat tommorow tho. Lemme know. I have a phone now again. But the one with yer number ended up in the river yesterday im afraid.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

same number right? Slip gun and I are going fishing tmr so ill give you a ring

blue fleck seem to be the ticket, im not sure I tried another color.

still the same number. Plz hit me up or pm me and tell me where youre goin and when.

I remember a few  weeks ago when the bite shut down because of warmer water after a couple warm days. Same thing yesterday maybe?

Yesterday was 59 (?)

I'll be on the Occ river today, no wake area, on a freinds boat.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

I remember the warmer days and actually hammered the fish. Today is overcast and low pressure on top of the warm temp, the fish should be moving out of the cover to feed so today would be the day to hammer them

using a 3 in sinko? I would rather not catch a fish all day than tie on a 3 inch sinko. Thats just flat out giving up.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

todays high down my way is gonna be 65 , not as warm as the last 2 days plus its supposed to rain. I'd still go out on the river if I had it in me tho, too sore to even think of touching my boat tho. I am tempted to make a drive down to bassproshops even tho I know I shouldnt spend the money  ::) I wanna new spinning reel for some reason.

Besides - 3 inch senkos are cheap they are two for the price of one!  :D

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

I have to agree with the last few posts, I rather catch fish any way I can then catch none. Altho the 3 inch senkos dont cast nearly as far. Dont worry shimmy, no one will think you're less of a man for breakin out the 3 incher  ;D

Im confused so catching fish is giving up, Id say not catching a fish all day and being to hardheaded to throw a 3inch stick would be giving up, but hey somethings you gotta learn on the water.

I'm actually with shimmy. I don't care enough about catching a few dinks to end a crappy day to tie on a 3" senko. At the end of a crappy day, they don't make me feel any better.

I caught around 50 3-4lb smallmouth on 3" senkos on a drop shot for 5 straight days at Bob's Lake in Westport Canada this summer. Throw that drop shot out in 30+ feet on a point and just let it sit there, I got slammed! I don't throw them in grass beds or on a Carolina Rig but for skipping docks and fishing rocky structure in 35 feet of water they are awesome. A 3" senko still looks like a minnow and will catch big fish.

I say we make it a fish-off. We can place bets, make a real event outta this. My money is on shimmy. No offence Little, just not big on little baits either. Not to say my bag-weight hasn't suffered bcuz, but my confidence is still in tact so at least I THINK i can catch fish.

I take LittleHunting - He looks like he would rob Shimmys sack before he let him win ;D

P.s. LittleHunting where you down there today right at 2?

Yea i was out there today, its was tough broke one off and missed a handfull of bites, only caught 1 yellow perch. I think I might have jinxed myself talkin about other peoples empty sacks

fishing user avatarVolFan reply :

I got out today for about an hour and a half around high tide in and around Four Mile Run.  Three fish, one solid 3, one 2+, and one with big ideas   All caught on a gold damiki spinnerbaits fished tight in and over cover.    Tried a jig and rage craw of varying shades, senkos, and a brief stint with a roostertail, but only hit fish on the Damiki.

fishing user avatarVolFan reply :

For the record they were 5 inch senkos. :)

Perfect. Someone set up the rules. Pick numbers, or have a sign up and have LHC and Shimmy as captains, and they pick. Haha. Great idea, NewAngler.

Elephants eat peanuts, Snakes eat rabbits, ants eat grasshoppers, kids eat their vegetables, etc etc etc

Bottom line is this, big bass love big bait. Always have, always will. And to reiterate, i'd rather fish all day long for a big bass and not catch any (which i hate to admit i did the other day) then to catch a bunch of dinkers. If i wanted those, i'd go to the local pet shop, grab the little green net, and scoop a dozen minnows.

And not to steal your thunder NEW but I'm pretty sure credit would go to either myself or 420 for mentioning the idea first :-/

It's cool tho, we'll still let you referee!   ;D

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Theres a pretty simple solution, let shimmy and LHC both fish from the same shore spot at the same time, side by side. Shimmy gets his big baits and LHC gets to use whatever he wants, since he didnt knock big baits at all. 5 bass limit so weigh each persons first 5 fish and whoever gets more weight is the champ. We'll even make a lil cardboard championship belt for you to wear  :D I still say LHC's time would be better spent robbin banks tho

Since I am a gamblin' man, you're on J!

10 post a day seems doable. Its the 10 post per day for two years part that has me a little nervous.

And i'd be willing to be a "you're banned." "No, you're banned" thread wouldn't be as successful as the one on a photog's forum.

I'd throw in another $1 and a bag of knoc-off senkos and say that if it were started here it wouldn't get as many posts as this thread as of today.

Care to dance, John?

Substance alert: I wish I could go out this weekend, but I've got my daughters birthday party, and poker night which means I'll be ineffective for sunday.

BTW how was your BPS trip? Whats the damage?

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I actually don't gamble, save for the occasional football pool or $40 in quarters at the old school slots, LOL.  Just messing with you all. ;)

That thread started over there as a way to blow steam.  People would get all upset, arguing about MTF charts, diffraction at the pixel level using small apertures, what "bokeh" really means, etc., that  "banning each other" with a little joking jab in there actually helped build some camaraderie.  Some of the bans are pretty funny.

there's another one over there, "Another useless thread..." that has about 2500 replies, and has much more content, despite the title, LOL.

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

The damage wasn't bad at all. I just picked up some tubes, hooks, and the Wii fishing game. It's pretty SAWEET. I had the $50 card, and spent another like $20 bucks. Then we ate there, so another $50 or so..

Could have been worse... I was looking at some fly setups, and then thought against the idea.

congrats for spending less then a hundred bux, thats hard to do at bps. I went to gander mountain in fburg today and spent 97 bux which put me under my 100 dollar rule. I did find some nice color senkos there that I never seen anywhere else except for maybe green top. And to my dismay thed had NO 3 inch senkos so I got 4 and 5's, I hope the 4's arent too girly for shimmy's liking. Takes a real man to throw a 4 incher  Also picked up a falcon buzzbait storage box as well as a big spinner bait storage box. More fun stuff to make my boat even slower when Im out there not even hardly using any of the gear in those boxes  I'm down for some bassin once the rain chills out

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

I'm not sayin' I enjoy chuckin' the mini senkos, but if thats what you're getting the bites on and you catch good fish on them from time to time, why not let others know so they may see how it works for them. I always thought this was a place to find out how others faired and how they approached the "outing" to find and catch fish no matter how big or small. LHC, I think the spirit in which you post is spot on, shimmy...... look at it from that perspective. I prefer throwing larger baits as well and hope for just a couple of bigger bites. No harm in numbers as opposed to size, that why I like apples and someone else might like oranges

fishing user avatarLHC - Bank Robber reply :

I got out for about an hour and a half, got 4 off the front of riverside, on 4inch senkos.  the color of choice was a chart/lime lam,  i fished darker colors first and couldnt get a bite on them.

I should have never mentioned a challenge between shimmy and LHC. Tommorow is gonna be cold (50) and rainy. For those of you with a sense of adventure greater then mine, have fun. I'm stayin inside where its warm and dry. Saturday , sunday and monday all look like they have potential to be nice days so I might hit the river 3 days in a row. I plan on throwing lil girly senkos, spinnerbaits of course , jigs, worms, and maybe a grub.

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

I wasn't offended at all. I just enjoy this thread. Its a great, very informative (for the most part) local thread.

The mods have been crackin down lately, as they should, and I don't want anyone banned. Fish off should still take place, and this thread beating 15,000 posts needs to happen. Which by the way I saw that one took a wrong turn somewhere and it ended up "why I should ban myself" thread around page 700 or so.

fishing user avatarshimmy reply :

Ha, well said Little, well said.

Yeh, and quinjin, i love the enthusiasm of your challenge, but thats not gonna put 6 pounders in the boat. Its fun listening to fishing challenges because some people love to bite off more than they can chew on this site.

I think some doubles tournaments of pride will be well under way in the near future. Thats what i love about this website, everyone thinks they're the best. And i hope everyone is keepin mental notes on the challenges.

Once the fishing starts up again, i'm hoping we keep a running thread on the big bass (with official measurements and pictures! None of this "i caught a few 5's and 6's today"must be documented!) caught-along with what lure was used. This should prove to be interesting.

In the mean time, here are a few of my 3" senko bass videos if you feel so inclined to watch them. This is what you'll be challenging, the game face is on!

http://www.youtube.com/user/theShimmySheide#p/u

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

No offense shimmy, but I don't think a single person, all 25,000 people, on this site claims to be the best. And to be frank, you seem to be the only one pouffin your chest out in this thread. On a side note, a team tourney can still happen.

Make a thread.

I've seen your videos, you're a good fisherman but there's more than one way to mow the lawn. In this case; there's more than one way to land a fish.

fishing user avatarshimmy reply :

Puffin the chest, come on man. This is all part of the fun. People just love to put their ten cents in. I do it as well. That's what this site is all about. And just so you know, i am always man enough to admit when i lose a battle. I have lost many times to my old man. Shoot, my wife has beaten me before (she actually is really good). But lets avoid the halo's if we can. Anyone on this thread has the potential to beat me in any particular tournament. Challenges are fun, enjoy em, and lose the serious face!

fishing user avatarThai reply :

If I remember correctly you've only been back in this area for a short time and those fish aren't from the Potomac, lets see you pull that here.

I think the potomac record is around 11lbs and is the md state tidal record,  the 16lber was pulled from conner lake (lake conner? cant remember)  which is a good little ways south of us.  Dont get me wrong I like catching big fish, but I wont chuck some lure all day and catch nothing its just not for me.  When the bite is what it is, 3inch senkos are hard to beat.

I think we should probably save a team tourny for spring at this point, but im game.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

Im in the same boat as you, and the 16lber from Connor was a fluke, that lake isnt known for large fish at all

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

Some of the best fishing of the year is here now and within the next few weeks.  I will be looking to catch some of the biggest fish all year in lakes and reservoirs in the area.  The river is still a good bet, but if you wait till middle to end of December you can really find them in very predictable spots and some of them will be big.  Some years I think I enjoy fall to late winter better than spring.  Not as many crushing fronts and unpredictable weather patterns.  Lets just see what happens.  I have a camera and live well, I'll start keeping track, good or bad.  I'll tell you exactly where and what I get them on.  All about the exchange of info.  Like shimmy, not afraid to zero(not happy when it happens) and not afraid to say so.  Lets have some fun.  Some people are not so keen on fishing in the cold........anyone opposed to it??  As long as it's not frozen I'm still tryin!!!!

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

I think a fish-off is a stupid idea, but from what I've heard, I want to be on quanjig's team.

Shimmy, I'm not sure, but it seems to me that some members (myself included) can't quite tell if you are intending to be sarcastic and lighthearted. Please remember, you are new to the board and we don't know you so we might not be able to pick up on the tone of your posts very easily.

fishing user avatarshimmy reply :

Well, i guess that is an honest concern. Just so you know, I am very sarcastic and never serious when any particular insult is given. I think the thread has been seen as a fun debate and in case anyone is wondering, yes i hate 3" senkos, no i do not hate Littlehuntingcreek, and i thought he knew as well as i did that the discussion was for fun. He's most likely a a great guy and a great fisherman. (I still think he's bank robber though)

In addition, you being more of a veteran on the other hand to the site, might be seen as more unwelcoming by newer guys on the forum like myself who don't have consistent access to a bass boat, let alone are learning the area and would love to learn new lakes, ponds, and have fun with a new fishin buddy. If i may recall, everyone else i have talked to has either sent a pm or some type of invite to go fishing except you. The new guy has to learn and i'd rather it be from guys like the ones here on the site that know what they are doing. However, you on the other hand told a guy with no boat and new to the area with no one to disclose such vital information to that you don't currently trust him with the good lakes, ponds etc. Now, your entitled to that, and quite frankly its not worth the begging from me. I understand great spots should be guarded with ones life in fishing, but maybe you might be misunderstood by newer guys like me who want to go out and meet some fishin buddies and learn the area. If i recall, when i first posted lookin for some fishin buddies to help me learn the area, you were the one who said, "so basically your just lookin for a ride". It goes both ways

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Thai I know some people might say potomac bass dont get that big but then again for how much pressure the river gets, I think theres still tons of biguns that no one has caught yet. I wouldnt be suprised to see someone catch a 14 pounder of the river, maybe bigger. I know all these 6-8 pounders that get caught must live longer and get bigger. But for the record since theres all this debate bout catchin a bunch of 2 pounders vs. catchin nothing, I rather catch alot of small ones then catch nothing at all with hopes of catchin one or two big ones. Action is still fun regardless imo. This was my first year on the river, now I have a bassboat and alot more skills and knowledge then I had when I started so next spring-fall is gonna be poppin for me no doubt. I'll have my pics of 6 and 7 pounders come spring time. For now I will settle for 2 pounders and the occasional 4 pounder.

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

It's all good shimmy. If you want to get out to Burke with me on Sunday, you're more than welcome to hop on. Probably all day if you are interested. I just have a small jon boat but it floats and moves!! Thanks Dan. if shimmy declines the invite would you be interested in an outing on Burke??

fishing user avatarsoccplayer07 reply :

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

I appreciate the complement Aaron, but I'm just a guy who grew up here with too much time on my hands with a terrible jones to fish reguardless of the weather!! I used to fish Burke at least 2 times a week in the early 90's.  I have had a couple of fish lost at the boat that people have said were close to 10lbs.  A few years ago a couple of fishermen I know had 2 over 8 in th same day!! I've had a bunch of great days out there this time of year where you could catch 10 fish with the best 5 going over 22lbs.  In my opinion it only gets better out there from here till we freeze up.  Even then if you can find open water you can still catch 'um at Burke.

fishing user avatarshimmy reply :

Hey, Quan thanks for the invite. Much appreciated. I however probably can't make it out this weekend. I'm fishin next weekend though and if anyone wants to go let me know.

I have considered Burke, but from everything i have heard, it's like Thai says, they are hard to find. Although Burke has a ton of bass. One issue as well, i would not toss a swimbait in that lake due to the ginormous musky. I remember reading a thread here about some folks catchin a few fish bass close to ten pounds out of here. This of course could be a stretch but it's always possible. I'll have to find it. I'm assuming the biggins on Burke are near the dam side and just live in the depths year round. If you go Quan, let me know how you did.

I don't mean to be unwelcoming but there are reasons that I don't give people fishing spots until I've met them. Believe me, I used to send my share of PMs to new members about spots and then POOF they vanish from the community. It's nothing personal, it's just I've decided that I'm not going to waste my time with members until they've proven they are going to be worthwhile contributors or good people.

We're brothers. We're happy and singing and were colored....Gimmie a high 5!

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

I will, and if I manage to land any I'll be sure to give details.  And yes shimmy, Burke is the 2nd largest muskie impoundment on the east coast(have no idea where the largest is) from what I've heard from game and fish.  supposed to be 2 adult muskie per acre out there.  I've seen quite a few pulled out from there this time of year.  Brush piles and nice drops are the best bets this time of year and there are quite a few.  I have a very old map of brush piles, some of which are probably silted in by now.  Nothing like dropping a big 'ole jig in a brush pile in about 20 ft of water and watching your line hop off the surface and heart pounding cause you got the bite, but now you gotta get that fish out of the pile!!  Very fun way to hang into some better fish.  Dan, you up for some??!!

High pressure yes but 90% of the angler who sample Burke lake don't know what they are doing...

fishing user avatarheyitskirby reply :

I lived in Springfield from June '07 to June '09.  Everytime I went to Burke I told myself I wasn't going back.

Spawn this year was decent for me as far as numbers, but nothing big.  Otherwise I think I can count the amount of fish I caught there on one hand.  Including just fishing for panfish on nightcrawlers.  Though I must admit, the one and only yellow perch I've ever caught was out of that lake before I moved up there.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

burke lake is electric only tho right ? Guess I need a jon boat with a hundred pound thrust trolling motor on it. Wish I could have kept my aluminum bass boat, it would have been perfect for out there with a big ole transom mounted trolling motor. Do people take big bass boats in there and just troll all day ? Oh and back on topic, Thai do you think all this rain is gonna ruin the clarity for a while? How long ? I was gonna fish on sunday and monday at least. I dont wanna waste my time tho ya know

fishing user avatarshimmy reply :

As far as Burke lake is concerned, it seems to be difficult. But one lake i haven't heard much of on the forum is Beaverdam creek reservoir. Anyone have luck there? Any biggins? I heard it had a nasty drought a few years back. I have hit it a few times since September and have averaged 3 per outing and none over 3. It was pretty tough.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

Beaverdam is decent. From what I've heard it's been tougher this year than the recent past. I caught a smallie there that almost went 3lbs.

It is a good fishery, it's just been difficult to find the fish this year. There are largemouth, smallmouth (not many), sunfish, stripers, and some musky if I recall correctly.

The difficulty with Beaverdam is that it is very difficult to fish from shore and it is electric motors only. The launch used to suck but they've made some recent improvements that will make launching a jon boat much easier.

fishing user avatarJVM reply :

I have been to Burke a few times and yeah it seems just as hard as any body of water to learn.  I think a lot of the "high pressure" comments are mistaken.  It gets its share of bass fisherman as well as northern species.  Thru spring and summer the biggest headache is from  the pleasure boaters who rent all the jon and paddle boats, making noise, crowding the area, etc...  This time of the year i have been out tere and you wont normally find much pressure there.  That has been my experience but I DO stay away from Burke.  If I had a jon boat tho I would prob drop it in this Sunday just as well as any other place.

I was thinking about fishing this Sunday.  No boat so prob shoring it but if anyone decides to do some fishing shoot me a PM

Bite was great today off of riverside, I got two pretty quick on senkos. Then decided to chuck some bigger baits, first was a spro bbz shad, first cast i had one boil up behind it then nothing for about a half hour. Changed to a buzz jet jr and pulled in two dinks in as many casts, but it did land one real nice fish. (sorry for the bad pics)

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

Burke has changed drasticly in the last couple of years.  The water is crystal clear.  It used to have a nice color to in for most of the year.  That coupled with the amount of people who just rent boats to cruse the lake make it difficult at times.  Like Josh said, you can go out this time of year and might not even see another boat.  This is what I call quality time.  Being very familiar with the lake I can take advantage of the quiet and look for the fish that do climb back up in the water column and they become more apt to take a bait. Just my opinion but I do think it should be ripe for the pickin' this weekend.  Water back up in whats left of the weeds, perfect water temp to slow roll a spinnerbait, enough wood cover to make it interesting, and I'll always look at the piles and points and drops.  Very much looking forward to Sunday.  As far as Beaverdam, I've only been a handful of times with limited success.  Wasn't aware you could get a boat in there again, thought they rolled a couple of big boulders in at the church ramp.  You can get a bassboat in Burke at the main ramp, we put my buddies 21ft center console skeeter in, no problem.  Gettin' it out was tough as you have to winch it out!!  I've seen plenty in there though.  River might be a bit tough this week-end, probably lots of floaters with all of the extream tides.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

nice bass LHC, looks it might have went over 3 pounds or so. So Thai, you missed my last post, I was asking you what you think all this rain is gooan do for fishin on sunday and monday ? Not like the water was real clear to begin with but do you think it will be too muddy to catch some nice fish ? Looks like LHC is havin no problems in the rain. But keep in mind that fishing from shore is alot easier then fishing from a boat out there. I can't get my boat way up in the thick stuff and shallow water. Thats where fishing from shore has its advantages. A little pelican boat or flat jon boat is another story tho. Speakin of which someone listed a nice 12 foot pelican boat on craigslist for $150!! Im so tempted.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

I'm actually starting to like fishing the dirty water, with clarity down presentation I suspect wouldn't matter as much which means throwing reaction lures would be the ticket and you cant go wrong with Senkos, and all the extra water flow would stir up the baitfish and might make the bass want to feed more... one of my better days at riverside was when it had just rained and water was dirtyyyyyyyyyyyyy. And I agree with you about the fishing from shore thing, you never really know in a situation like this whether it would be favorable to the fisherman or the fish so going through all the trouble of taking a boat out might be bust but you can never go wrong with shore fishing since you can always pack it up and move on.

I do plan on going out tomorrow too and if you would like I'd love for you to come fish up here with us

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

quanjig, they removed the boulders from in front of the ramp at the church ramp early this season. They also chopped back some of the brush and trees near the ramp.

Speakin of which, theres a few shimano stradic 2500 ci4's on ebay right now. They have been on backorder for a month or so and Im temtped to buy one. There was 6 last night and 2 have sold since then, decisions. Should I just buy the 4 that are left ? hmmm

You tick me off Steve......your gear is so nice..... ;D

If you can afford it I say go for it man, and I kind of want to go fish 4 mile run again tmr and if I were you I'd bring something to throw spinners/rattle traps and worms or jigs

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

I can afford it but I dont really need 4 more spinning reels, I have two and I hardly even use them as it is. Its the fact that the new stradic is so hard to get right now that makes me wanna buy the 4 on ebay. Think I'll pass for now and wait till bing * cashback rewards go up to 15 percent and then buy one . I fished 4 mile run from my boat last time I went out and didnt even get a nibble. I did see several people fishing from shore tho. My boy says he has caught many nice size bass out of there too so there must be something to it. I'll come out for a bit , what time u goin ? Call me tommorow after u wake up and touch base with me. Im goin to bed now, when you get old like me one day , you'll get sleepy at 10:30 too

Actually with bing cashback rewards I could have bought all 6 of them and flipped on here for about a 20 dollar profit per reel. I opted not to and just let others buy them. Im pretty sure no one even knew they were on there cuz the listings hardly had any views when I looked. I dont need any spinning reels to be honest, to me they serve no purpose whatsoever. I cast further and more accurate with a baitcasting setup anyways. On a sidenote, Thai, D16, Slipgun and myself went on a shore fishing adventure today that amounted to one single fish weighing .61 pounds caught by myself on a 4 inch senko. None of us could really get on top of fish. We did however see alot of huge fish jumpin in 4 mile run. They were either stripers or huge largemouths, they were gigantic fish. They werent carp or catfish, they were jumpin too high. We made repeated casts in their vicinity and couldnt get them interested. We must have walked a total of at least 3 miles today, all for one fish  :-[

fishing user avatarshimmy reply :

Had a good day yesterday junk fishing around DC.  Decided to give the sewage plant a break since it was so nice out yesterday.  All the fish came on jigs.  I threw a crank and a spinner bait a bunch but nothing.  But I can complain, nothing like laying back into some jig fish.

I fished 4 mile on Saturday in my skeeter.  I saw about four guys fishing from shore near the BMW dealership, was that you guys?  The water was very stained and I didn't catch anything in 4 mile but I did well at Blue Plains and the Spoils.  Crankbaits, carolina rig, and 5" senkos skipped under the blue plains docks did well.  Biggest fish was 4lbs 9 ounces from the blue plains docks.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

yeah it was, I talked to you I think if you were the one casting and hitting the bridge lol!

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

took the stratos out for 3 hours today from leesylvania and shot over to the mouth of mattawoman. Caught a few small ones on a 1/8 ounce buzz bait. Hard to believe they were hittin the buzzbait at 3 pm but I tell ya, that baby buzz bait almost never lets me down. We saw one jump right next to the boat that had to have been at least 6-7 pounds but of course he wasnt interested in what we had to offer. I lost a few that felt decent but over all the bite sucks right now around my neck of the woods.

I wanna stick to DC fishing but that ramp at gravely point is horrible. And from what I hear belle haven isnt much better. So maybe I'll start hittin pohick more so I can be a lil closer to the action. My boat is goin in soon for an 8 foot pro model power pole, cant wait. Talked to the guy today and he said $1550 installed!! I might have to get two of em. Also gonna put my humminbird 798 on and maybe a 6 inch jackplate while Im at it. I need a more fuel efficient motor so I can launch near my house and shoot up to DC without burning up 40 bux in gas, that will have to wait till spring :-?

Yesterday the water was glass and it didnt rain much down by riverside, there was a nice layer of fog rolling around and the fish were very active but out of reach. I was able to pull a 2lb out from under the bridge on a purple war eagle night time spinnerbait. Another guy was pulling out cookie cutter 12" stripers on live bluegills.

He told me a guy pulled out a 44"er out from under the bridge a few weeks back. He's an honest guy so I trust him. But the conditions were perfect out there that day.

Sadly i just couldnt cast far enough to get to them.

You're right, we rolled the dice fishing up north and it didnt pay off. We talked to a guy who caught 2 on crankbaits that were both close to 4 pounds. That could have been us tho ya know. I hate to second guess myself or Thai but I think we would have done better in Mattawoman especially at high tide early, the buzzbait and frog bite there is still decent. But we didnt expect the rough windy conditions up north, it wasnt mentioned on weather.com when I checked for wind. There were gusts that had to be close to 20 mph at blue plains so we couldnt really skip senkos under the dock as planned.

If I had been smart or better prepared and put more gas in the boat then we could have shot down south to where you guys were but I just didnt have enough fuel in my sherman tank of a boat. Mattawoman and the area surrounding is my neck of the woods and I can usually at least pull out a few 2 and a half pounders this time of year.

We will have to organize a fish off for spring, maybe in april ? We have enough time to get more people and boats. Would be wise to do it right before tourney season kicks off so we dont step on anyones toes. We can do it this time out of lessylvania and then maybe have a shindig/bbq at my house right after since I live less then 4 miles away. I wouldnt be surprised to see everyone catch at least a 3 pounder and a few 5's and 6 pounders too. I will start a thread in february if you guys think it's a good idea. People from richmond, fredericksburg, NOVA, MD, all would be welcome. I think Im done with the river till then, probably gone hit my lake house in another few weeks or so for some warm water bass action. That part of the lake is warm in the winter and people catch some hogs too. If a few of you guys are down for that then lemme know as well.

Lake Anna, yeh, i will be there. Game face on and ready to rip some lips

I meant 20 yards, obviously a typo.

I'll only be able to take a certain number of people to lake anna. Maybe about 9-10 people besides me. So if youre intersted, those of you who fished the fish off on saturday then lemme know. We'll try and set something up where everyone can make it out. While Im there I wanna drop some brushpiles down around my boathouse and out in a few spots. So anyone with experience doing so please get at me. This will be my first time attemtping to do so  :o

I wasn't at the Occ with you all but I'd definitely be interested in fishing the hotside in the winter sometime if you would have me. I go to VT so I'm down in Blacksburg alot of the winter but I'll be home for Christmas mid December- mid Jan. I'd be happy to bring my boat. If need be we could fish 3 out of it

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

ok so far I have at least myself, soccplayer, rockvillemdangler and vabasser for possible boaters. Do you guys all have GPS in your boats ? Im assuming none of you know your way around the hotside, specifically the Elk Creek area. The good thing is that there is a small island about 100 feet offshore from my house with a lighthouse on it that my neighbor built. So it serves as a good landmark for boaters tryin to find their way back. Then Thai and Dan get preference for non boaters right now. So that will leave space for 3-4 more people maybe 5. Also EGolfer might wanna come down with his boat, I have yet to talk to him. I know Shimmy wants to go, and I know a few other people have posted sayin they wanna go as well.

So what I will do is propose a date for this, most likely a day trip. Might involve an overnight stay, cant say for sure. I know not everyones schedule will work out. So its a majority rules kinda deal. Im not gonna schedule around one person or anything like that. Im shooting for sometime in the next 3 weeks or so, it will be before xmas, that I know for sure. I will post more later. I do not wanna start a thread about it tho since Im probably already close to capacity as it is. This time I will remember to put the drain plug in before the boat goes in the water :D Thai and I almost watched my stratos sink the other day in front of belle haven lmao. Actually wasnt so funny at the time. Anywho, more details later. PM me to discuss so we can keep this thread on track. And for those of you who dont already know, the private/warm side of lake anna has so so fishing when its warm outside but during the winter it really springs to life. Should be a good time.

Yep got gps in my boat. Sounds good, I've always wanted to try fishing the hotside in the winter but have never had the opportunity. Just a heads up I won't be back in Fredericksburg til Dec 17th I believe. They push exams back later and later it seems every year, ticks me off. So I know you can't schedule it around one person but if its before that then I won't be able to make it, so minus one boat from the boater category...

Yeah man, as long as its a day that I'm able to make it you got a spot on my boat since you were the first to call it.  I prefer just 2 on the boat, its a 2004 Bass Tracker PT 185, but I have fished 3 off it without too much hassle.  I guess it will depend on how many boats we're able to get

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

dont expect much of a tourney. This will be my first time fishing from a boat during the cold weather. I have only fished from my boat house in the winter before. So I dont know the spots to go from boat. But I have done some research on what to look for and what to throw.

I just read reports of people catching 20 bass a day right now on elk creek which is where my house is. Mostly between 1.5 and 3 pounds. Shakey heads, wacky senkos, crankbaits and carolina rigs are all good right now. Theres tons of boat docks down there and the wacky rigged senko is supposed to be deadly pitched around and under the docks. Theres also alot of rip rap areas which will be holding some fish and then of course the dikes.

I do know of one real nice cove thats chaulk full of lilly pads during the summer, its a few acres in size when u get back there but the water is between 2-3 feet back there limiting big boats such as mine. Im pretty sure those lilly pads are fine right now but not sure if theres fish around them at all. Its less then a mile from my house so I will go back there right away and see for myself. The possibilities are endless right now but I have to explore some of course. Thats what will be great about havin 3 or 4 boats out there at once is that we can all check out different areas and cover more ground that way. Im not lookin at this like a tourney as much as a fishing trip. Oh and btw, the bass spawn there during february  ;D A february outing will be a must as well.

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

Count me in if the dateis good. No overnighter for this guy. A house full of dudes is is not my thing. Steve can I hop on your boat if the date works out?

fishing user avatarcmatthews6485 reply :

I want to go as well if there are any spots

fishing user avatarLHC - Bank Robber reply :

Back to the question at hand, I got out for a little while this afternoon and got 5lm, big fish was pushin 3lb but most were around 2.  Only thing gettin bit was a 3inch senko.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

went down to the lake today to get some mail and wow the water was clear. I saw around 12-15 bass swimming around my boathouse. All between 10-14 inches as well as a massive carp that kept tryin to get my senko. I had to keep pulling my worm out of the water so my fishing was limited. Also saw alot of catfish as always between 1-2 pounds . So Im thinkin Im gonna get one of those automated fish feeders and install it on the dock so the bigger fish move in.

I did catch a few small ones while I was there and lost one that was probably around 3 pounds. All on a 5 inch senko texas rigged weightless. The wacky senko was gettin no love from those bass. I was only there fishing for about 45 minutes maybe. This was around 1pm, temp outside was 54 degrees and the water of course was warm and crystal clear. I could see 5 feet down into the water no problem. I wanna get back there with my boat asap ;D I did see 3 different bassboats flyin by my house and that was it. The water is like glass also. Pretty good conditions for fishing if you ask me. Oh and yes NewAngler you gotta spot on my boat since no one else called it, my gf will have the other seat Im sure.

Back on topic, think Im gonna hit riverside tommorow if I can. Thai you up for some shore fishing ? High tide should be around lunch time right ? Imma check now. Oh and LHC plz post some pics!!

You can catch fish out of it year round, it'll slow down Jan & Feb but you can still catch em. Today I caught 5 on a jig in 5-25' of water nothing over 3,but still fun, and a bunch of crappie

Yeh, i think your along the right lines heavy. I never go under 7 inches. Matter of fact the closest i came was a few weeks ago in our NOVA tournament and i went down to a 7 incher but in general, it's just not worth it to me. I must say, when you get a bite with a lure that is huge, your heart drops and just the sheer anticipation of it gives me the rush. Even when bass are finicky, i just can't put on a bait smaller than 7 inches. It might be a psychological disorder.

A 7 inch ribbontail is a tiny bait, I have only thrown a ribbontail worm under 14 inches three or four times in my life.

You could pull out some hawgs with that setup on Beaverdam and most lakes in NOVA due to the HP/Elec. only restraints

Don't know about Beavercreekdam or Burke, but Occoquan Resevoir allows gas engines up to 10hp.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

yes, i meant you would be able to fish both the Occ res and Burke as long as it is setup so you can pull the engine up. You can use it at the Res but you have to pull it out of the water to use it at Burke. Sorry.
