- NEW COMPACT DESIGN - KastKing Royale Legend Series has been anglers’ favorite baitcasters since 2014. Royale Legend II Baitcasting Reels are totally redesigned for comfort and super performance! It’s a compact size low profile baitcaster fishing reel combined with a concealed side cover release that makes the reel comfortable even after thousands of casts during a day of fishing.
- LEGACY CARRY-ON AND BEYOND – The new Royale Legend II casting reel has carried the legacy and set a new bar for performance and durability. For the first time, KastKing implements the double bearing supported pinion gear technology to a $40 reel, that delivers a 35% increase in smoothness under load compared to the original Royale Legend. This new design structure increases durability by an astounding 30%.
- FASTER AND LIGHTER - Royale Legend II provides faster gear ratios than the previous models. The new 5.4:1 gear ratio model is perfect for crankbaits or slower presentations, while the 7.2:1 gear ratio model that quickly picks up fishing line at 29.8” per turn is great for pitching jigs or burning baits at high speed. Compact design also saves weights for Royale Legend II, making it just 7.2oz, which is lighter than most of graphite side covers and frame casting reels available today.
- STRONGER - KastKing’s new Royale Legend II casting reels are equipped with an extra-hard stainless steel main shaft, Hamai precision machined brass gears, diamond shape ceramic line guide and CNC aluminum spools for strength and durability. Combine those high-end features with a quadruple disc carbon drag that delivers a fishing stopping 17.6 lbs of drag and an incredibly low price, and you have the best value in baitcasting reels available today.
- CROSS-FIRE MAGNETIC BRAKING SYSTEM - To avoid time consuming and frustrating overruns and backlashes, the new Royale Legend II fishing reels include a newly designed, dynamic magnetic braking system with 8 magnetic buttons, compared to only 5 or 6 on most other reels. Royale Legend II’s ten-level adjustable braking system eliminates casting issues while maximizing casting distance and fishing line control in windy conditions. Say goodbye to overruns and hello to more fish in the boat.
Product Description
KastKing engineering delivers the all new KastKing Royale Legend II baitcasting reel! It is a fishing reel that has been totally redesigned for comfort, performance, and durability.
KastKing reduced the size of Royale Legend II’s graphite frame and side covers for a more compact, palmable shape with graphite side covers and a side cover release concealed at the back of the reel for a smooth, comfortable feel for long days on the water.
Royale Legend II baitcast reels are now equipped with a highly adjustable 8 magnetic button braking system with ten levels of brake adjustment that eliminates casting issues while maximizing casting distance and control in windy conditions.
Performance improvement was a core objective in designing the new Royale Legend II baitcaster fishing reel. An amazing 30% durability increase and 35% more smoothness of the reel under load was achieved by adding double-shielded stainless steel ball bearings and ball bearing sleeve to support the pinion gear and main shaft. Hamai precision machined brass gears for strength, durability, and cranking smoothness add to the performance of the cast reel making it an amazing bass fishing reel.
Royale Legend II baitcasters come in two gear ratios and in both left- and right-hand retrieve. If you need a low gear ratio reel for crankbaits or slower presentations, there’s a 5.4:1 model that allows you to work lures slowly for more strikes. For pitching jigs or burning baits at high speed, select the 7.2:1 gear ratio, high speed model that quickly retrieves line at 26.8” per handle crank making it easy to catch up to fish or make quick follow up casts.
Quadruple disc carbon fiber drag washers deliver a smooth maximum drag power of 17.6 lbs. While this is plenty of power for most fishing conditions, the most important part of the drag system is how smooth it is. No hesitation and smooth starts protect light fishing lines and gives you confidence when landing big fish.

Questions about KastKing Royale Legend II Baitcasting Reels, New Compact Design Fishing Reel, 17.64LB Carbon Fiber Drag, Cross-Fire 8 Magnet Braking System, Available in 5.4:1 and 7.2:1 Gear Ratios
Q:
Does this reel have a a free spool clicker?
Answer: No, it's really not that kind of fishing reel its a sport action casting reel.
Answer: sorry no it does not set to zero on magnets
Answer: No it doesn’t
Answer: No
Q:
Is it good for bank fishing
Answer: Yes. Bank boat or dock.
Answer: Of course!
Q:
Does it have Dual braking systems?
Answer: Interestingly the older version of this reel does have dual breaks. One that I purchased less than 6 months ago has both contrifical and magnetic breaks.
Answer: No , only magnetic and spool tension. No centrifugal brake.
Answer: I just bought the royal legend and the confusion begins. What is the little lever that has the open and close for? Do I actually have to open the reel to set the magnets?
Q:
Has anyone experienced line breakage while just sit on spool and not being used for a few days? 10lb test trilene.
Answer: Yes. I had 6 pound test. Wierd the line acted like it was cut. I got a couple good birds nests juust thought it was kinked bad enough to break. Unspooled about 20 yards and found more breaks. I gave that rreel away because it was right handed and I needed a left hand. No trouble with the new one. Could be something wrong with that reel. If you contiue to have trouble replaciing the reel might be the answer.
Q:
Can this handle muskie?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I've never fished for muskie so I can't give u an answer that I know to be fact. I can tell u that it will bring a 10 lb large mouth bass in, but you are not gonna bring it in without a fight. From pics I just looked at of muskie, and again this is just opinion, but hell no. It's a great casting reel and it is well worth $40 but it is not a 20-30 lb fish reel by any means
Answer: It is a low profile reel. I believe it has enough power but maybe not enough line capacity. It is a great reel for the $
Answer: Sorry don't know what Muskie means as far as your reference.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Will this item be back in stock?
Answer: The only real upgrade between the RL2 and the RLGT are the handle knobs. The RL2 is offered in both 5.4 and 7.2 gear ratios. The RLGT is only available in the 7.2. The RL2 is all black and the RLGT is red and black. Otherwise, the 2 reels are identical. I have the RLGT. The best $40 baitcaster on the planet earth.
Answer: More than likely since it is the upgraded version of the Royale Legend.
Q:
Ripoff? how is this an upgrade over Royale Legend which had 11+1 bearings and dual brakes, this has only 5+1 and mag brake???
Answer: No idea. I got mine and it has both the mag brake and a friction brake.
Answer: This kastking has dual brakes too
Answer: returning mine, grinding sound after 3 uses. Went to buy concept z13 instead
Q:
Any warranty with the reel?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: It's a wonderful reel. Warranty is one year from date of purchase.
Q:
Does this model have a flipping switch?
Answer: No it doesn't have a flipping switch
Answer: It does not have a flipping switch.
Q:
Where is kastking made from? usa or china?
Answer: China of course
Q:
What is the difference between this and the royale legend gt?
Answer: Color and handle.
Q:
Would this be a good reel for a person new to bait-casting?
Answer: The price-point is great if you decide its not for you. Practice, practice, practice. Read the instruction manual, dont try to cast a mile on your first cast, read the manual again. Adjust the brakes to max to start off, slowly back em off after you get the hang of it. Dont forget, your thumb is also a brake. Keep practicing in the yard. I love mine, no issues at all.
Answer: Yes, bought these for my teenage boys. Sealed bearings and brakes are good quality. Worth the $. Also suggest the insurance for 2 yrs.. worth the small price
Answer: Yes, it’s a solid reel that’s easy to dial in. It even comes with instructions.
Answer: I was new to baitcasting also. I think it's a good starter. It just takes a little practicing.
Answer: Yes.
Q:
Si soy derecho que carrete deberia comprar?
Answer: Deberías comprar izquierdo con la derecha tiras la caña
Q:
No 7.2:1 Left hand?
Answer: It is also available in lefthand, select the left most picture option. That should be the lefthand 7.2:1 option.
Answer: 7.2.1 , Right Hand.
Q:
Muy buen producto de muy buena calidad?
Q:
Is the origional royale legend still available or did the r.l. 2 replace it? why would it be better with only 5 bearings compared to 11 bearing?
Answer: I purchased 3 reel. The last was the Royal Legend 2 :-
Q:
What super power braided line can I use for this ? I’m looking at the kastkings website and there’s different diameters and what not any help!
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Braid is much smaller in diameter than monofilament or fluorocarbon line, which means you can run a much higher test strength line. Braid has a tendency to dig into itself on the spool, so a thicker diameter braid like 40-50lb will keep that from happening. I run 50. Some guys run up to 65. But remember, fish can see braid very easily, so make sure you tie on at least a 3ft fluoro leader.
Q:
How would this work for catfish and braoded line?
Answer: I just caught a 12lb. Catfish on a Med Heavy rod with 20 lb braid. It was super easy to reel him in. While I don’t target catfish, the 4 I have caught have all been on this reel, and I landed them with ease.
Answer: It easily handled a 5.50lb largemouth on it with braid. I would have no problem using it to catfish. Very nice reel.
Answer: It would work great
Answer: I have the older version equipped with 65 pound Suffix braid and it casts like a rocket. Been the best froggin reel I have ever used. Would guess that this one is just as good with braid.
Q:
Do the knobs on the side do anything or just for show. I got 2 of these reels and doesnt seem like they change drag or tension. Am i missing something
Answer: The large star wheel on the handle crank shaft is drag tension.
Answer: Yes, they should function as intended. If they are not then you might have gotten a bad reel. Ensure you are turning them the proper way.
Q:
how much lead core 12 lb line will it hold?
Answer: If you know your line diameter this might help. I have 30 lb braided line with a diameter of 0.28 at 150 yards.
Answer: I put 20 lb line with 125YD .
Answer: Around 250-300 yds if using braided line if mono it’s might less
Q:
Why is there no "Right" handed -7.2:1 ??
Answer: The same reel I bought (it's in my boat) I do believe it came 'right handed' also think it's interchangeable.
Answer: Yes it’s available. You have to pick which one you want.
Q:
line capacity?
Answer: Depends on line diameter.
Q:
Is this reel Braid Ready?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: There are videos that explain how to attach braided line to a bait caster without backing, mine has never slipped.
Answer: I think so, I have braid in my other Kastking model reels.
Answer: I did not start with non braid line and I have had zero problems
Answer: I am not sure what you mean by braid ready. I have braid on the real and it works very well
Answer: They recommend, so I did, putting electrical tape or splicing mono(me) on first for braid to prevent slipping. So far, so good!
Answer: Works fine with braid
Answer: No you need backing
Q:
is this reel good for salt water fishing?
Answer: Just remember to really rinse it off. And once in awhile oil it ...
Answer: It sure is!!!
Q:
how many ball bearings does this reel have?
Answer: It has 6 bearings.
Answer: 6
Q:
Can I use this is saltwater?
Answer: I don't see why not. Just need to ensure that you clean off all the saltwater afterwards to ensure parts don't rust.
Answer: You can. I have.
Q:
Does the 5:4 weigh more than 7oz?
Answer: Not that I can tell I only have the 5:4 but I have other kastking reels and they are all pretty light.
Answer: Package weight 10.6 oz.
Answer: No but don’t buy it! I sent 2 back already. I know what the reviews say but don’t always believe what you read. Get the Abu Garcia Black Max for a few more bucks
Answer: I don't see why it would, it's just a matter of gearing. I'm sure you find that information on the Kastking website.
Answer: Not by much if at all
Q:
If im right handed is it best to buy right 7.2?
Answer: I would think you would want to be cranking the reel with your right hand. So you a right hand reel. The 7.2 ratio is all dependent on how fast you want the retrieve of the lure to be. Some of my lures I prefer the slower 5.4 ratio.
Answer: With conventional I use my right hand to cast and crank. Just feels more natural. On the other hand if I am using spinning gear I reel with my left hand.
Answer: Left. You want to use your dominant hand to hold the rod. Reel in with left.
Q:
Is it dual clutch???
Answer: If your asking does it have a centrifical break and magnetic the answer is only magnetic but I can tell you it works great. A good deal for sure on a baitcaster.
Answer: Not sure.
Q:
how much 15lb braid will it hold?
Answer: If this helps, I can get around 110yds. of 20lb. on mine.
Answer: Not by much if at all
Q:
How much 40lb braid will the line hold?
Answer: About 100 yards
Q:
Is there a Photograph of Packaging
Answer: Sure, if it helps!
Q:
Ugh who else got sold a used reel? Pretty upset. Came with greasy fingerprints.
Answer: I have the same reel....came untouched in a beautiful box with instructions....used three times deep sea,30lb braid, worked real nice and smooth....sorry about your purchase.
Answer: Mine was, too. I just figured it happened in the handling process. I cleaned it. Hope it wasn't used.. lol
Q:
Can I use any kind of fishing line or there’s a specific one for this reel?
Answer: Yes, you may use any kind of fishing line. Monofilament, co-polymer, braid, and fluorocarbon will all work.
Answer: Any brand of line works, just like any other reel.
Answer: You can use braided, monofilament or flouracarbon
Q:
Can I get a power handle for this reel?
Answer: Not sure, but this has one of the largest diameter set of handles on the market. It retrieves very fast.
Answer: I'm sure you can. China makes everything.
Q:
Does the Line Guide move during a cast to match line that is spooled?
Answer: no, it only moves during retrieve to lay the line evenly on the spool---this is how most baitcasters operate , some baitcasters don't have a line guide
Answer: I am disable, I really don't have time to check the line guide. All of the word about is to to cast my line 10 feet. :-)
Answer: No, it does not move during a cast.
Answer: During a cast no, only during retrieve
Answer: Yes
Q:
What does the open and close switch next to the braking system do?
Answer: It opens the side of the reel to clean/lube magnetic brakes and to remove the spool for the same.
Answer: It locks and unlocks the cover on the left side of the reel so you can access the magnetic brakes and spool
Q:
is this saltwater approved?
Answer: No. But I will use it in salt water , and give it a good fresh water wash after each outing.
Q:
is the Royale Legend 2 in right hand 7.2:1 out of stock?
Answer: Shouldnt be
Q:
Does this have a bait clicker ?
Answer: No. It's not for bait fishing. Baitcaster is an older term for a level wind reel.
Answer: No, but you will love it!
Answer: No.
Answer: No
Answer: No
Answer: The two I have do not.
Q:
Is this reel rated for salt water fishing
Answer: No
Q:
Will this reel be ok with 12 pound braid? Want to use it for light trolling for croppie.
Answer: Yea it will. Very important to know to oil reel right out of the box. If you dont then dont blame the reel.
Answer: Yes. Probably overkill. I used it on Striper and didn’t have a problem.

Answer: I would say yes.
Answer: yes

What is the difference between this royale legend ii and the sparticus? why buy one or the other?
Answer: Bought royale legend ii and after 2 days of fishing with it I had problems with the reel reeling in line.re lubed the reel and had no luck.buy a better reel.
Answer: Dont know.
Answer: It depends on your personal reference you can get both reels right or left handed i went with the kastking due to the fact that I myself am a beginner and learning to cast with this reel so it the more I learn with this reel then I will start advancing and move up to the Sparticus.as of now I'm really enjoying the kastking hope this helps with your decision
Q:
Does this reel need backing before spooling with 20ib braid?
Answer: No...u can run straight braid on it ,very smooth.people only use backing to conserve or make expensive braid go further..no need on this reel
Answer: Braid is always difficult on any spool for rat nesting. I really don't use the mechanical break on bait casting but use my thumb instead. On some reels I will slightly brake only and this one is not much different.
Answer: I would. I had 20# braid on mine. Used 20# mono as a backing.
Answer: It helps

Answer: Lefthand is currently available, select the left most picture.
Product reviews of KastKing Royale Legend II Baitcasting Reels, New Compact Design Fishing Reel, 17.64LB Carbon Fiber Drag, Cross-Fire 8 Magnet Braking System, Available in 5.4:1 and 7.2:1 Gear Ratios
Sport74 : 8 mag brakes! No thumb needed
Excellent baitcast reel. Eight magnetic brakes really slow the spool down. I haven't lined it yet but you can spin the spool without any tension and the brakes off and it will spin for days! Apply the brake to max and it makes about 4 rotations before stopping. I bought this for my son who is left handed to learn to throw a baitcaster and I'm sure he will have no trouble with it.
mel90210 : Good little reel
Just starting baitcasting and didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a hobby that I may or may not be good at. This was the right price for a starter reel and has served me well. It’s squeaking a little after about a month’s use (thus the 4 stars) but still pleased overall.
TYWANA MONTGOMERY : Very pleased so far
I have 2 of these reels now and I also have 2 of the original royal legends. I like this reel a little better than the originals just basically for the feel in the hand, its a little lower profile. I also like that the spool tension adjustment clicks on this version. The original version has more bearings 11+1 vs 5+1 on this version but you really can't tell the difference. Gear ratio is almost identical. The original version does have Centrifugal brakes which is a little better for beginners but I think this version cast maybe a few feet farther but they are very close. So far I haven't had any problems with either. They do like braid better than mono. Best real for the price.
Demar002 : Excellent value for the money
Excellent casting ability. Very smooth. Zero issues with nesting. I wish it had a higher retrieve rate but i knew that going into the purchase. Excellent. Value for the money
Michaline Morrison : Solid Reel, Great Value
Works well, nice and smooth. Casts well and far when applied properly. Rather simple to configure, settings easy to understand. Only issues that have been run into so far are mostly aesthetic. The high gloss finish of the reel is very easily damaged, it got scratched almost as soon as it was taken out of the box. Second issue is that it is not the easiest reel for winding and stowing the line initially, but it casts great and oh so smooth. This is keeping the "for beginners" rating lower. Still, overall a great value and worth the money.
Scrummie : First time that I have ever been able to actually use a baitcaster
I have been throwing spinning gear for 40 years. Over the years (beginning at 16) I have purchased baitcasters to try to learn to throw them. It was ALWAYS the same results: incredible bird's nests within seconds. That was until I tried the legend 2! This reel has been the answer to my long time dream of being able to cast a baitcaster. If you're a true novice, as I was, just turn the centrifugal brake to 10 and you can literally cast without a thumb! The problem then becomes distance. The higher the brake the shorter the cast. However, these "training wheels" can let you learn how to thumb the spool on casts and as you get better you can drop the brake. I am still set to 7 so early intermediate and I am already bombing casts. I can't wait until I can throw on 1 or 2!!!!
GREAT REEL! BUY ONE!!!!
Demar002 : Excellent value for the money
Excellent casting ability. Very smooth. Zero issues with nesting. I wish it had a higher retrieve rate but i knew that going into the purchase. Excellent. Value for the money
Michael Burnette : Impressive
Straight out of the box I’m impressed to say the least. Snagged one for 40 bucks and unboxing you would’ve thought I was opening a reel three times the price. Solid metal throughout, great texture on the handle, smooth reeling, and quiet aluminum spool. I cannot wait to throw this beauty on a long heavy rod and get to punching. Thank you KK for a quality “direct to customer” reel.
Amazon Customer : Not high quality but worth the money
First opinion of the reel is that it has a smooth reeling action but the rest feels a little cheaper made. The spool tensioner does not have well defined clicks for adjustment and does not seem to be as smooth responding as some other reels. The drag appears to be ok so fare but have not tested on a fish yet. First spooling of line it favored spooling the line on the right side of the spool. Although this does not affect its performance it shows a slightly lower quality. When testing the reel without line there is a slight noise with the spool upon starting and stopping reeling. This noise disappears once line is on but shows to me the fit and finish of the internals is a lower standard as well. Overall from what i see the reel is definitely not a high quality reel but you are not paying high quality price and the reel is not a bad purchase at the $40 price point. I would buy again.
Bubba Gump : My first baitcast reel - Update!
Update - I love this reel so much I bought a second one. Awesome reel.
It took me a little time to get it dialed in while practicing in the swimming pool but once I did it is awesome. I wish I would have graduated to a bait cast reel sooner. I was stuck on my old Faithfull spin cast of my youth. I love how smooth it casts and retrieves. I feel like a real fisherman now. Thank you for making a great affordable baitcast reel KK! I can already feel the itch to get another one of these from KK.
D.G. : Incredible value on an amazing reel.
Other reviewers claimed the Calamus 2 Baitcaster was identical to this reel. They’re wrong, but not by much. However, the Calamus 2 is nearly identical but has a better spool and mag selector. However, there’s no way I’m sending this one back. This reel is smooth, solid, and cast a mile without tangles. Puts the fun back into baitcasting. Excellent for experienced and beginners alike.
Zachariah J. Middleton : Well made, but not as well designed.
UPDATE: I recently purchased the Okuma Cheymar low-pro casting reel, which looks extremely similar, and it proved how poorly designed this reel is. My first use of the Cheymar I was casting like a pro. The braking and spool tensioning systems are MILES better than this one. Oddly enough, the fit and finish are not that much better. But I can't even express how much easier it is to use than the KastKing model. Spend the extra $20 and get the Okuma.
After a couple months of using this reel, I've come to the realization that this is probably a solid reel in the entry-level price range, but it's not necessarily good for the entry-level consumer.
I've had zero problems with the manufacture of the reel. All the components seem to be relatively well built and have a nice fit and finish. The reel came on time and in a nice box with some basic instructions for use. Unfortunately, these instructions aren't model specific. They talk about how to use the centrifugal brake, which the Royale Legend II DOES NOT have. Since the instructions aren't model specific, it leaves you wondering if you are really setting up the reel in the best way.
That might explain why after using a half dozen different line tests and a massive array of lure/weight combinations, I find it difficult to cast more than a dozen times or so without having a serious birds nest. Sometimes adjusting the spool tension and drag will help, but not always. The magnetic brake seems to be completely ineffective because it's virtually impossible to cast it far enough to where the lure spends enough time in the air to be slowed by it. Every time I switch back to a spinning reel I find I can cast twice as far with ease.
A major caveat here is that this is my first time using a bait casting reel. I watched a number of videos to learn how to use it properly and practiced in my yard for a few afternoons to perfect my technique. I got to the point where I feel like I understand and can manipulate all the features, but I still get a maddening tangle of backlash almost every trip at least once, and I've been going fishing 2 to 4 times a week since I bought it.
All of this leads me to believe that the reel is pretty well made, but not as well designed. A better design would allow a lower barrier to entry for beginners. Perhaps if I already had a good amount of experience with a bait caster reel this wouldn't be such a headache. It's very possible I'm missing some key piece of information. But ultimately, I find myself frustrated more often than not. Anyone else who's new to bait casters probably will too.
Jeff : First Baitcaster, wont be my last!
First time using a baitcaster so I have nothing to compare this to. Was set up with this and ready to go frogging in the local pond matted with thick lilly pads in about 45 minutes (incluidng practice casting in my backyard). I put this reel on with my Lews heavy/fast rod spooled with 65# braid.
Took a few casts to get it down but by the end of my 1.5 hour session I was throwing with great accuracy, no backlash/not once, smooth casting reel. I’ll likely be picking up a few more of these to set up on other rigs I have.
MSMELXX : SMOOTH!!!! BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!
GREAT REEL! SMOOTH & DURABLE. My brother bought one 3 months ago and recommended this to me so I bought one too. He is happy, I am happy and we are all happy, my dad may buy one soon! Great deal, great reel, great bang for your buck. No issues or anything! Thank you!
BrownSuga : That you want to be informed in your purchases, this was it!
I was totally overwhelmed, exicited and afraid all at the same time when I first saw the Baitcaster. I am new to this but there are enough resources for me to learn and this by far was the best choice. The detailed inserts on how to care for the Baitcaster was an experience I've never seen since taking up fishing. Thank you KastKing for being so diligent in informing me in this new venture. Now time to go practice. (Smile)
Dave F : Drag malfunctioned
Immediately after taking it out of the box I put line on the reel. Took it outside and with a dummy plug I started casting. The drag did not engage properly and the reel jammed. I use their spinning reels and like them , however they need to either redesign the reel or rethink their quality control. As it is now, I would not recommend.
Beth : Damaged
I have 9 kast king reels. This is the 3rd one I received the I had to return. I do not know how this happens. How is this in a box like this? I am 100% satisfied with KastKing customer service the last 2 times. They actually shipped my reel to where I was going on vacation the first time. This time I am just returning to Amazon. For a replacement. I just don't understand how this is shipped as new when it looks like this. Hope the replacement is better.
Josh : This thing is amazing!
Got this thing yesterday immediately threw some 12 lb trilene xl smooth casting and this thing just absolutely slayed bass. Within 15 mins of getting set up i had my first catch and the speed this thing has is incredible for the low price point. I am absolutely in love with kastking products.
mlchristy : Great reel, Great for Beginners!
I am new to the baitcasting reels. This reel is so easy to use. I watched a video about this reel and how to fine tune it and cast with it. It is so easy. For years I thought I would never be able to use a reel like this as I always ended up with birds nests. I practiced with this reel for a few days, and took it out on the lake and never got a backlash (birds nest) yet. It is awesome. I cast almost twice as far as I do with my open face reels. It is extremely light, probably about a third of what my other open faced reels weight. Super fast retrieval, I just cannot say enough about it. Caught two nice bass the first day out with it! I use 12 lb mono line on it. But going to try some 10 lb braided here soon. Enjoy your new reel!
David A. Jordan : very good casting reel.
A very good casting reel, good line control when adjusted correctly, though as with most casting reels, it takes a little practice to keep from getting backlashes. Having quite a bit of experience (75 years) with casting reels, I would say that this rates with reels that I have costing three times as much as this one. I will need to use it much more to see how it lasts.
Rover : Great function & value!
Picked up this reel on sale for $32. For the price, this comes w/ great value. Casting action is very smooth. Adjustment controls are ergonomically where you would expect them. Easy to adjust even when reeling in a fish. Soft handles are an added plus. Pair up w/ the Crixus like I did and you have a winning combo.
OKAngler : Worth every cent
Ordered this after being severely let down by another budget setup I had purchased. Was able to get this reel dialed-in in less than five minutes.
Great casting, smooth drag, and all around awesome value for the price. The gear ratio is as advertised, although the reel capacity seems a little ambitious (printed “12lb/110 yards”) I strung a 30lb braid (simile diameter) and fit about 80 yards. Still enough for my needs though. I didn’t rate durability as I just bought it, but I have no immediate concerns unlike my last purchase.
Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a bait-caster without having to drop big money.
ThommyBoy : Not an improved version of the original Royal Legend
After two days of catching 25” Redfish the reel said “no mas”. Starting making all kinds of noises when casting and reeling.
Kastking rod and reels have been good to me in the past. One thing I didn’t like was they marketed this reel as an improved and updated version of the original Royal Legend but it is actually a cheaper vein of the original. No dual braking system and only 5+1 ballbearings instead of 11+1 like the original.
Dink : Super Fast Delivery and need size and feel!! You’ll like it
Super Fast delivery! Order last night and had it by noon today!!!
Lined it with 15 lb line. I tied a 3/16 jig head and set the drag by drop speed. Set the mag to 6 and 40 yard cast into the neighbors yard with no backlash. I was going to by a black max from Academy for the same money but wanted a lefty and they had none in stock.
I’ve not fished it yet but I’m impressed!!!!!
l. cit : Save your money
I've heard from so many how good kastking is. Well I'll tell you fist hand save your money and buy Daiwa or Shimano. I have used baitcasters all the time. At first this reel had a really nice feel. The grips were my only complain at that point. They are a really cheap foam. The first time fishing this reel would backlash every 3rd cast. The adjustments are almost useless since they are coarse and not a fine tune. Eventually I just left my thumb on the reel and only used heavy lures. Also I only put half the line on the reel which is terrible to have to do. Since the first time using it I had about 10 casts on it since the reel would backlash just looking at it, I took the reel out a few times. The second day the reel started to make some crazy noises like a cat caught in a blender. The third time I used the reel the brake was gone. I urge anyone to stay away and go with a carbon Shimano or Daiwa if you want a cheaper reel. Nothing worse than going fishing and getting out there to turn back around.
Richard H. : Decide on left or right sided crank.
Just started fishing again. First Baitcasting reel for me. After some research and discussions with my son who uses one, I found this to be a good start. It is inexpensive and the quality seems first rate. The most in-depth decision was to buy the right or left handed model. I read a few good articles about how a right handed caster (me), actually May consider a left hand crank, as you don’t have to change hands after the cast to start your retrieve....I guess the modern way...but I settled with the right sided crank as I am use to casting, switching hands and reeling in. I hope, as I get use to this style of reel, to someday try a left sided crank.
Bruce : Most comfortable, and reliable
I like everything about my new KastKing Royal Legend II Baitcasting Reel. It is much lighter than my other Baitcasting Reels. It is a pleasure to use because on a long day of fishing with it my arms and hands never seem to tire out. I am 73 yrs old and I need this comfort for me to enjoy my sport of fishing. I recommend this reel and any other reel you might purchase from KastKing.
James Muskelly : Best reel for the money and well worth it
I love the new reel. Already had the first Royale Legend and after finding out it was revamped I had to get one. The drag is just as smooth if not better and it is smoother than the first one. I now own three Kast King baitcasting reels and plan to eventually switch all my reels to Kast King. They are by far worth their weight in gold. And I also own the Stealth which is another great reel and it will also take whatever you can throw at it too.

Anthony Hurtado : They replaced my reel
A big shout out to Madbite, I bought a kastking legend bait caster, used it once, it worked ok, went out again and the reel started to malfunction. I contacted madbite (Maggie) and told them what happened. My return window was closed, Maggie said they would replace the reel, 2 months after purchasing reel. They didn’t have to do that, but they did. Thank you madbite, great seller. I will buy from them again.
Richard Stade : 50/50 CHANCE OF QUALITY
I was super impressed with this reel when I bought it in Sept of 2020. I had three royal legends before this one that I liked. I ordered a Zypher BSF as well. Then I decided to get another royal legend ii. Thats when my problems began. The one u bought in 2020 developed a jerky feeling when I cranked it. Something in the line guide gear I believe. The second royal legend ii I bought in June 2021 has the same "rough spot" while retreaving. One of my original royal legends has now developed a gear noise. So out of 6 reels, 3 are still as smooth as the day I bought them. 3 are not. I also purchased 2 triton spinning reels several years ago that are fantastic even after heavy saltwater use. So out of 8 total purchases, 5 are holding up and 3 did not. I know these are $40 reels, so guess its a crap shoot when you purchase them.
Richard Williamson : Update:
First of all this is an error on my part. I misread the description on this reel versus the original Royal Legend and assumed that the 2 would have dual breaking and more ball bearings I made my purchase. What I really wanted in a baitcast as fast as features was in the original Royal Legend. On this real I basically have to run my magnetic brake setting on 8 to keep it from back lashing which doesn't leave a whole lot of adjustment, that's where I think the dual braking of the OG version would definitely help. I also was looking forward to the smoothness of all those ball bearings. Again though, this was my fault and has nothing to do with the product I have now, just read the descriptions carefully!
Tyler Packer : Good product/price for what it is
My first baitcaster reel. Only complaint I have is that it is difficult to set the brakes for light weight rigs such as the typical plastics that are used for bass fishing. Heavier crank baits I have not had an issue with (which is what I prefer to fish with anyways so..).
WIM : Great compact fishing reel. Superb Construction and Engineering.
My first baitcaster reel. Followed the instructions and looked at some YouTube videos. Set the magnetic drag ,spool tension etc and practiced casting. What a dream to use . One over wind when I change rigging gear. Did not set it up properly. Love this reel. For $40 , even importing it to South Africa it’s great value for money. Brought a rod to match this reel. Off this weekend to go fishing with the grand kids ( who are already eyeing out my new rig ????)
Travis : Truly a great budget reel!
I have only used mine for 10 mins so far, I actually down graded and I feel like the Kast King was so smooth and amazing! The feeling difference was so set far apart. I have a Okuma Citrix bait cast I spent like 130 on it and it's smooth and great BUT this last King was a game changer I even threw on on breaded 8 lbs test for the first time and it never back lashed or tried . I got the Royal legend rod coming in the mail can't way to put them together!
C. Rogers : Great first baitcaster
For the price this felt like a very easy decision for my first baitcaster--and quality wise it feels worlds nicer than the similarly priced offerings from Bass Pro or what you can get on a manufacturer combo. Very smooth, easy controls. I've bird-nested my fair share of casts but that's user error--not the reel--as there is a learning curve to using a baitcaster. I've paired mine with a 6'6" Ugly Stik GX2 Medium Heavy 2-piece rod and I get great distance. Haven't landed a fish yet but I'm confident in this reel.

delump : Smooth
I'm not sure about longevity yet. I'll update if that turns out to be a problem. However, this is a very smooth. Even with a good fighting fish it remained smooth. I didn't have any issues casting it, but I've got several years of experience with bait casters. This one really isn't any different than ones I've used in the past regarding birds nests or casting. If you throw in to the wind and don't pay attention you'll get a mess - LOL!
The reason for the 4 star versus 5 is I thought castking reels came with an internal clutch. Pins to open or close based on your needs. This in addition to the magnetic clutch that can be adjusted on the outside. This model doesn't have that internal clutch.
The clutch being said, this is a good reel for a very good price. Quality is definitely there. As a guy who fishes 20-25 times a year for a variety of species (bass, walleye, crappie, pike), I recommend it. An affordable option for a good quality reel.
Deborah Powell : You get what you pay for
Read a lot of great reviews on this reel here on Amazon so gave it a shot. Can't begin to tell you how disappointed I am in this purchase. If you like spending long amounts of your time untangling bird nests than this reel is for you. I have 4 other bait casters but this one continuously bird nests no matter what precautions I take. I would not recommend the product to anyone and hoping I can get my money back but not holding my breath. Used a grand total of 4 times bird nests on all 4 occasions, total garbage
Khalid Fowler : All this for $40?
I didnt know which baitcaster to get as a newbie. I found this reel on youtube. Looked like a great deal. Picked it up and wow! First I bought the right hand version. Put it on my rod to see how it felt. Seemed nice BUT it felt weird having to switch hands to cast then reel. Returned it and bought the left hand version. BINGO!! Feels perfect, strung up as expected, easy to set up thanks to youtube. I tossed it lightly in my living room. Seems nice! Now to get on the water....

Dracula : My first Bait-caster reel.
I've heard great things about the original Royale and have tried my friend's set up with It. I chose this reel because It has a nice set of features at a reasonable price. The main body of the reel is solid metal and feels very sturdy but the outer panels are plastic which may crack after a few impacts with hard surfaces, but that is why they can sell it at a good price so it's a fair compromise. All in all, it suits my needs and is not overpriced.

J. Hancock : Super easy to get dialed in.
I gotta say my first impression is, Kastking has done it again. This is a really great reel for the money. Recieved it today earlier than expected. As soon as I got it, I spoiled it up and took it out to the pond. Caught 3 little ones and a 2 pounder and so far, it performs flawlessly. Very easy to get dialed in with the clicking tension knob. I would and have recommended Kastking to all my friends looking for quality fishing gear.
Amazon Customer : Love it
Never used a bait caster before so there was a little learning curve but with a little practice and watched a couple of videos they are easy. Bought one for bass and a heavier one for catfish have braided on both. Braided is a little different but many helpful videos available showing different ways too attach the line to the spool and tie on hook and lures. My biggest regret is not buying them years ago.
Amazon Customer : Good overall reel
I owned the first version of this reel and really enjoyed it but had gotten the wrong side drive. This version is even better besides that the 7:1 gear ratio is not offered in left hand drive. This reel is super smooth and both clutch and brake work well. This version over first has an added click to the clutch adjustment so that it doesn't loosen over multiple casts. Good product overall.
