Questions about Daiwa Bg Spinning Reel
Q:
Is the 6500 a good size for a 10' 6" surf rod.
Answer: Not too big at all. Many east coast fisherman use the 6500 as a jigging reel on 10' 6" rods. I have one on a Lami Xra 126 1MH
Answer: Frankly I think it is a bit too big and heavy for this rod. Not sure what you are fishing for but this reel holds 550 yards of 50 lb braid. That seems like a lot for a surf rod and reel set up. Maybe the 4500 or the 5000 .
Answer: I rocked a 6000 on a medium heavy. It worked well on a 10'6 okuma Rockaway. These are bigger reels tho. As long as you stay in the specs of your pole. My max on my 10'6 and 12' are 50lbs braid for my medium heavy. Getting one of these for my 12'
Answer: 5000 worked perfectly on my 10ft Okuma. Caught my personal best shark on it. 4 ft blacknose. Handled with ease.
Answer: You will have lot of line on that reel. Will handle large fish
Q:
how big is it like in comparison to something
Answer: These reels run way bigger in terms of sizing than Shimano. the 3000 is like a 4000-4500 in terms of Shimano sizing. If you plan on using it for bass in freshwater, get a smaller size. This reel can handle bonito, striper, salmon, and other big fish. I hope that helps:)
Answer: I bought the BG 4500 because I wanted a pretty big real, it is about twice the size of my vintage Penn Spinfisher 4400SS
Answer: “Like” in comparison to other reels, or to “something” like a tackle box?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: The BG5000 is the same size as my Penn Conflict 6000 and a little heavier as well.
Answer: Not as heavy as my 91 mustang gt foxbody. Holds more line than a cardi B concert
Answer: the sizing is all whack, you have to look at the line capacity...
Answer: They are all smaller than a large pumpkin.
Q:
I got the BG 5000, need to pick a rod for shore fishing mahi mahi. Any have suggestions?
Answer: Bro if you're fishing from shore for mahi mahi and you have a 5000 get atleast a 10ft rod !! Lamiglass is top choice among surf fishermen
Answer: Ugly stik tiger elite series. I have my 5000 on a 7ft tiger elite series.
Answer: anything that's a heavy medium heavy rod and 7ft or 8 ft length
Q:
What does the size number mean
Answer: The number are the reel sizes for example bg8000 being the biggest reel they offer and I believe 2500 is the smallest they offer. Different sizes are need for different situations. More line and more drag on the 8000 would be good for offshore fishing but not so much from land.
Answer: They are from 1000 to 10,000 as the number increases so does the reel and it’s weight. For jigging etc you need around 3000 for casting then 5000 to 1000 are called for. Also the bigger the real the more line it can take.
Q:
What size reel should i buy? i have a 12' ugly stick heavy surf rod and cast up to 8 oz but usually 5 oz pyramids and sometimes 3 oz artificials.
Answer: Correct - the BG5000 is the right size for a 12ft or 13ft rod. My BG5000 took 330yrds of 50lb Jbraid and is very nicely balanced. The 6500 is a VERY big reel - about a shimnano 25,000 size.
Answer: The 6500 would probably be the best match.
Answer: 6500
Q:
With one is better daiwa bg 4000 or shimano nasci 5000xg
Answer: I've had the nasci 4k. Much prefer the BG 2500. almost same size in comparison. I just literally have away the nasci 4k reel to bro in law for surf fishing pompano. Not sure how it's held up. But I have landed some large red drum and black drum on the 2500 BG reel 33-36inch drums. No prob at all. A friend had the Penn battle 3k with 30# braid. He was almost spooled. I've had to feather the spool to prevent that. All in all BG is a good reel. I own the 2500, 3k and 4500 sized reels. With 15# 20# and 30# braids, brands such as kastking and suffix 832. Not a wind knot nor overspills
Answer: I’ve used multiple Daiwa 5000 series reels on the Alabama Gulf Coast for the last 10-15 years. They’re tough and can handle large fish. That said, they must be washed with fresh water immediately after use to remove sand and salt. I disassemble and re-lube annually. Buying more now because accidentally lost parts on older reels are not available. Hard to go wrong with these reels.
Answer: Hi i cant be of much help on this one.I own several daiwa bg series reels but have never owned a shimano. I do know the daiwas are very smooth and reliable.
Answer: Never used the shimano. I like the bg 4000 it is nice and smooth.
Answer: Daiwa bg tough reel for da money
Answer: Best bang for your buck the Daiwa
Q:
What is difference in 4000 and 5000?
Answer: 1000 lol. The numbers are reel sizes so the larger the number the more weight you can reel in however diawa reel sizes seem to be underrated so if your looking at a diawa 4000 then it’s probably a little more heavy duty than other brands 4000. That’s just my experience
Answer: The 5000 is a little bigger and stronger.
Answer: Short version, the 5000 series carries more line.
Answer: Larger number means bigger size. May be just amount of line or frame size may also change. Look at daiwa web site. They will have a chart for each model.
Q:
Can the Daiwa bg 8000 switch from left hand retrieve to right hand retrieve?
Answer: Yes. I dont have an 8000, but I have a 3, 25, and 65 and they all switch so I dont see why the 8 wouldnt.
Answer: Yes. The instruction manual says how to do it. I have not done it, but it looks pretty simple.
Q:
I got a 7 foot heavy rood would the 5000 be a good match for it?
Answer: Without knowing what the rod is it is hard to say... deep sea rod?... What kind of fish are you targeting...? But the 5000 is a pretty big reel for some pretty heavy line.
Answer: It works but if only inshore I would recommend 4000 or 4500
Answer: Yes perfect
Q:
Does this come with a line on It or do I have to purchase separately?
Answer: Hello, you are going to need to purchase your own fishing line . You need to buy according to the fish size that you will be targeting..
Answer: Reels do not come with line. You always have to buy the line you need for what you are fishing for.
Answer: No, line is not included in the reel.
Answer: you have to purchase separately
Q:
Daiwa:made in?
Answer: BG made in China
Q:
What is inluded in the box with BG4000?
Answer: I purchased the BG4500 however would assume them to be the same. The o,my items were the reel with one attached spool, a handle so that you can set for left or right hand use and a single page user basic instruction manual. Didn't expect much more.
Answer: The bg reel, spool & extra washers. Good reel for da price blows da penn battle2 away.
Answer: Reel spool extra wasshers for even line lay.
Q:
what size is this "BG Spin 6 + 1, 5.6 : 1" option?
Answer: 3000
Q:
This reel left or right handle ?
Answer: You can change the handle to the left side or the right,it’s very simple.
Answer: You can change the handle to either side of the reel. Easy, unscrew handle and unscrew cap on opposite side and pass the handle and tighten up. Simple. Tight lines and good luck.
Answer: Both the handle is interchangeable
Answer: It'll swap to either side. Very good reels.
Q:
Is this reel overkill for surf fishing in SwFla
Answer: all depends on what you're fishing for. the reel is on the heavy side so plan accordingly for the type of fishing you plan on doing. The 6500 is good for throwing bait off the beach, pier, and will do very well on a boat. i personally use the 3500 & 5000 in the surf in SE Florida and New York. Have not encountered any fish that it couldn't handle, sharks included
Answer: Looking for my 1st salt water surf reel to pair with 10ft Ugly Stik. What size do i really need for your average sized red fish, snapper, pompano rigs, black drum? Thx
Answer: Actually that’s why bought this reel. A friend recommended this model for surf fishing due to its line capacity for larger fish. I will also use this rig for kayak fishing
Answer: Best reel I’ve ever used! And I was a very dedicated Penn user!
Q:
Would the 5000 go good with a 9 ft med fast action rod?
Answer: The BG series are a size larger than other comparable models. For example, Penn 5000 and a BG4000 are comparable. For your rod, I think a 4000 would be better.
Answer: That choice is a middle of the road rod for almost any type of fishing. I love my BG.
Q:
What side does the handle go if I'm a 'righty'? First fishing rod.
Answer: The handle goes on the left side for a spinning reel.
Answer: I'm a righty I reel with my left. So left side.
Answer: what ever side feels comfortable to you. I am right handed and I have it on the right side, feels weird on the left side.
Answer: Any side you want. Great reel for salt. I have 6 of them
Answer: Left
Q:
What size is best for red fish other saltwater fishing?
Answer: If you are fishing with bait for large red fish, the BG4000 might be ok for you. If you do a lot of jigging you might want to go a size or two smaller. I use the BG4000 for top water lures and larger fish mostly. They are great reels for the money. There is nothing that compares in their price range. Very Pleased.
Answer: I use the 3500 for my inshore salt water fishing. I've caught some good sized redfish with it. I had no problems at all.
Answer: You're probably better off trying match with the rod you're using. Match with the line weight, where the reel seat is, guides and weight. I've actually landed pretty big blues on a 2500 and prefer that with my st croix inshore rod. When offshore I prefer the 6500 bottom fishing with the mojo salt. I would go with the 5000 for surf fishing,, so depends
Answer: I'm using the 3000 size, handles most inshore fish quite well.
Answer: I have a diawa emcast bait runner reel, for catfish / carp and the thing is a monster, too much reel for the purpose actually. I have the diawa BG in a 2500 which I use for bass...perfect size. Hope this gives some frame of reference
Answer: My wife loves the 2500 with her smaller hands than mine, I love the 3000. I'd let the pole's line weight limit narrow it down, the 2500-3000's 10-20# are an ideal match with a 7'0"'s 12-17#
Answer: 4500 or larger. but i'd check with the company. they will respond
Q:
What's the best st. croix mojo spinning rod combo with bg500? 7’6” / medium heavy / fast or 7’ / medium heavy / fast ?
Answer: this personal choice 6” no charge to mach
Q:
Want to pair with a croix mojo m/h rod. I have a battle22500but want a bit more 20lb braid capacity. Would a 3000 or 3500bg be too much for that rod?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: No, it wouldn't be too much. I wouldn't go any bigger than the 3500 though.
Q:
Can I pair daiwa bg 3000 with St. Croix 86 medium heavy
Answer: Med heavy rod are a bit heavier than I would use on that reel. I have a pair of 3500 on medium Calico Jacks and they can be too heavy at times.
Answer: Desired rod weight is really based on personal preference. If you are comfortable with that rod and it's good for the fish that you would like to target, the 3000 will be fine on that rod.
Q:
Best size for salmon?
Answer: I'm not sure where one other comment is coming from regarding sting rays and sharks, but for Salmon, I'd say the 4000 is probably good. 5000 tops....and that is probably as big as you'll need.
Answer: It’s big and slightly heavy. Definitely for big salmon and more like sting rays and sharks.
Answer: The 4000 should be fine. I have the 8000 and seen people catch tuna and ice caught shark on my reel but it may be a little overkill for your use so I recommend the 4000
Q:
Will the bg 5000 fit on ugly stik elite from this link? https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/b00vs0rmck/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=atvpdkikx0der&psc=1
Answer: Do you need that line capacity and max drag? You may find a smaller size better for you. I think if you want this size reel it would match up better with a different ugly stik. I have this reel on an ugly stik tiger elite for offshore saltwater jigging and it's perfect. I spooled it with 40lb braid. I have another in the 4500 size spooled with 30 lb braid and a top shot of 20lb mono for live lining bait for Yellowtail snapper.
Answer: Yes but I wouldn't put it on that rod. The reel is too nice for that rod in my opinion.
Answer: yes
Q:
What 6'6" or 7' rod would match well with the BG 5000 reel? Mostly looking to do saltwater fishing with some freshwater as well.
Answer: IMHO anything with a mono line rating of 15-30lbs would work great there
Q:
What's the best sizes reel for fishing 4- 12 lb BASS? Was looking at the 2500 but not offered here for some reason.
Answer: It is offered but listed under "140 yds/10lbs"
Answer: I'm a salty ? But that should work.
Q:
How much drag on the 5000?
Answer: 22 lbs. of drag, it is a beast for it's size. With 80 pound braid and 60 lb. mono leader,
Answer: 22lbs
Q:
Would 5000 be fine for my 9 foot medium heavy rod I use for 5-10 pound striper
Answer: The Daiwa BG5000 with 30lb braid on a 9 foot medium action rod is the combination I use angling in the surf. It handles ten pounders without a problem. It's a great reel. I highly recommend.
Answer: BG 3500 or 4000 have plenty of power and line for 10-20 lb striper. BG5000 is big and heavy , good for much bigger fish even offshore
Answer: Yes, but for the size fish you are after it might be too much. I use my BG 5000 with 80# braid for
Answer: Yes, it would work fine. 5000 has manual bail and I think a stronger anti reverse dog gear.
Answer: I have a 4500 and it holds just over 200 yards of 20# test mono. I think a 5000 holds just over 250 yards of 20# test mono. Hope this helpd
Answer: Take a look at the 4500 series. I put one on a 9ft meat hunter, and another on an 8' for my wife. We both love the 4500. The sizes on these are a touch different. My 6500 has the same line capacity as my Okuma 8000. So the 4500 BG has more line capacity than you would expect. Great drag. Smooth. And they have all landed a bunch of catfish. Best of luck!
Answer: This reel would be more than enough. I catch 20lb yellowfin on this rig. You could possibly step down to a BG4000 if you want a smaller outfit. BG3500 if you use braid. Either way you will be happy with how it performs.
Answer: Yes, I think it will work well
Answer: That’ plenty!
Answer: Yes
Q:
what line braid test?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Your question has to do with braid line testing: Here are some examples for certain types of line weight for fishing:
Answer: The 4000 holds 370 yards of 20lb braid. 200 yards of 40lb braid.
Answer: I would go with 20 to 40 pound. Depends on what your trying to catch. I have 30 pound on mine and catches everything I have targeted. Tuna up to 50 pounds, Dorado (dolphinfish or Mahi Mahi) up to 50. Snapper, Snook, Roosterfish. Like casting top waters. Been a nice reel so far. No problems.
Q:
based off a recommendation from salt strong I order three bg 5000 upon receiving them the first two I put together the bails would not close any help?
Answer: The 4500 and larger have a manual bail, after casting, you manually flip it. The 4000 and below flip automatically when you start reeling.
Answer: Send them back.
Q:
fishing in surf with 10’ rod. 15lb test. Is BG 4000 right size, or go to 5000? Don’t want heavy rig

Q:
Could you use the 6500 on a 7 foot 6 rod or would it be two big ?
Answer: The 6500 is a big real. I use a 2500 on a 8’ rod
Answer: it depends on the line rating on the rod. The 6500 is a big powerful reel.
Answer: I don't like the feel on that size rod. The reel is too large for that smaller rod. It will work, but I don't like the way it feels to large
Answer: Yes. You can use that model and rod.
Answer: I would say It depends what the rod is rated for in weight, not necessarily the length.
Q:

Q:
For the bg5000, is a 7’ medium weight uglystik a good combo?
Answer: No get the 2500 or the 3000 for a 7 ft med
Answer: I think it would be fine, but depends on how you're fishing. The reel might feel a bit much to be casting and retrieving for long periods of time. If you're bottom fishing, its fine
Q:
What is the dimension of the shipping package?
Answer: I threw away the amazon box but the manufacturer's box for a 6500 size reel measures roughly 7-1/2"x7-1/2"x5-1/4" deep.

Q:
Would a 3000 reel be a good match on a tsunami airwave 9' surf rod med hvy action for long island striped bass surf fishing?

Answer: The 3000 IS VERY ROBUST WITH A LARGE CONTROL WHEEL VERY COSTAL
Q:
What size reel would be best with the Okuma Rockaway 11ft surf rod? I’m planning to use it for plugging.
Answer: i have the same rod and i have the 4500 bg with it but its to heavy but 4000 or 4500 and keep in mind that these reels are larger than other reels
Answer: 3500 or 4000 they are heavy for plugging. I use Shimano Stradic 4000 for plugging, very light reel and higher drag.
Answer: I will recommend the size 6000 match an 11 foot rod
Answer: 3500 or4000. These reels run big.
Q:

Product reviews of Daiwa Bg Spinning Reel
Evan Weeden : Great reel
Got this reel as a birthday present for my gf, coming up on a year and, the gf is now my fiancé. I bought this reel as a first for her, expected it to get banged around like any tyro angler will do. It preformed flawlessly, great line lay and durability. It was tested on numerous stripers and bluefish. Bulldogging Tautog, Black seabass and scup. One cannot stress enough the durability and value of this reel! I’m getting one for myself!
ROM : Excellent reel
This is advertised as a salt-water reel, but it works equally well as a fresh-water reel. For the price, you'd be hard pressed to find anything better. The spool is quite large, and I got an entire roll of 8 lb. test on the spool. The color combination is very nice, and it looks good on any color rod.
Duer : Great value!
Best spinning reel Ive owned. Great value. Only issue is the wildly generous line capacity. Id estimate I can put 400 yards of 0.28 mm braid on the 6500. Its stated line capacity is 550 yards of 0.36 mm braid. Bee Ess! Cmon Daiwa, I love your stuff, you dont have to oversell it. Or fire somebody.
khadija c. : I mean it's BG!
This was my second spinner reel. I wanted something not too bulky and reliable. Many anglers recommend this so without knowing too much about it I ordered it, im so glad I did. This is a very good reel not too much weight for 4000 size. They are a more comparable to 4500/5000 size from other companies. I landed my biggest fish, 40lb stingray on this. I wasn't able to bring that in just by cranking the handle, I used my rod but the drag worked really good. It hold a ton of line just like most daiwas. I haven't done any maintenance on it, but its just as smooth as the first time I got it. I think its the best reel around $100. You can't go wrong with this reel. I would definitely recommend this reel to my friends.
Omatee Dookie : It okay
This reel is nice looking but when it comes down to it being seal from splash it is not it had water all in the gear little water and yes i will wash the reel with fresh water to get out salt and sand i had to change the grease as well because it was making a grinding sound and had a feel like a hand mill about 20 minutes of being used the first time .
D. Edwards : Incredible quality!
This reel is so incredibly smooth and consistent in its movement! It's amazing to feel the quality of this reel. I purchased this reel because it's known to be a reel that, apart from its weight/size, is known to be comparable in quality and feel to reels far above its price point. After trying this reel out a few times, I'm more than happy with the performance and quality! It's a solid value purchase!
James Maresca : Great value for the money
Butter smooth, strong, smooth drag system. Casts a mile. The only negative I have is the bail wire is a bit thin. I had seen that comment before in the reviews, and it's true. It could be a bit stronger. But that being said, it's very functional. It gets out of the way when it's open and I didn't see anybody report any bail failures, so I'm sure it's fine. I've only used it a few times since I bought it a couple weeks ago, so at this point my experience with the reel is minimal. I'll update the review down the road if any issues arrive, but so far, I love this reel.
Patrick : It so good
I bought two of them together and both of them didn’t last but a couple weeks of use. The ball bearings went bad. Right out the box they worked smoothly and all the sudden they started too skip when reeling in the line. That’s the best way I can describe it. I really wanted to like these reels but I can’t afford $100 a reel every few weeks. Maybe I got a bad batch!? I don’t know, but I’ll stick to my Shimano reels for now.
Amazon Customer : Fantastic reel
I was looking for a smaller surf / salmon reel for alaska. I tried several reels in the 75-100$ range before buying the bg4000. Absolutely no comparison. For close to the same money as the others, the BG is easily twice the reel, it's a great value and well worth the $105.
Atticus Sain : Best budget Saltwater Spinner
Fantastic reel, oversized spool and super smooth! Really love the machined aluminum. Got the 3500 on a 7ft inshore ugly stick. Would like to set this boy up on something longer, around 9ft or so to get better range . Currently spooled with 15lb chartreuse braid. It was this or the Penn Battle 2. I'm still going to get the battle, and I'm glad I bought this one first.
Dont get a 3000 or smaller reel if you ever plan to maintain it yourself. They use an impossible sized screw in 2 places, and you just end up stripping it. More than frustrating
Charles J. : Can't beat daiwas quality at the price point.
The only "damage" was to the factory cardboard box. Took the new reel and some 50lb braid to Port Aransas the following weekend. Brought in 2 bull reds at 36" and 40". The reel performed like a dream. I've been a Penn fan for a very long time but the Daiwa at the price is equal or better to their products.
SKA : Best in class in the $80-$90 range
Pros: Smooth. Great drag. Casts well. Braid ready. Looks great. Hard to beat at this price point.
Cons: Heavy compared to more expensive reels. The "shank" on this reel is a little short given the huge rotor / bail. The result, in the smaller sizes, is that the bail is much closer to the rod than I am accustomed to. As such, I've had to pay attention to and/or adjust how I hold the rod to keep the bail from hitting my knuckles during the retrieve. So if you tend to hold your rod just above the reel seat as I do, you may run into a similar issue.
Sang Beum Nam : Might just fall apart?
I live in the desert in California and only go deep sea fishing a couple times a year so I was really excited to use this product. It was my first Daiwa product purchased and was really excited to use it. I had a brand new spool of braid and a shimano flatfall paired with it. My very first cast with it and this happens. I almost jumped into the Pacific Ocean to try to get it back. The part that’s missing just goes right into the Pacific Ocean and breaks my heart. Really feel like something like this should never happen. Lost my new reel, new spool of braid, and a flatfall. Feels terrible. Because of what happened I couldn’t even fish for the whole day because that was my only setup for the bigger tuna. I have contacted Daiwa and will be updating this review depending on what happens.
Pescadore : Very happy with this reel after a month of heavy use.
Bought the 3000 version. It's much bigger than the Shimano 3000 size reels I have. I've been fishing with this reel for over a month now and have landed multiple Chinook salmon with it. It's handled every one of them beautifully. Great drag, great line capacity....I rinse it with fresh water after every trip and so far it's performed flawlessly.
Matt : Great inshore reel
I'll update the review if anything changes, but so far I'm impressed. I picked this up for landlocked striper and inshore fishing, and so far it's been great. It's very lightweight for the size and price, and the retrieve is buttery smooth. It seems comparable to my Battle II's, but lighter and smoother. If I need another spinning reel it will likely be one of these.
Matt : Incredible reel!
What a great reel. I have the 4000 size and its perfect match for my Penn Battalion 7'6" for inshore striper fishing. It is true what all the review bloggers say about this reel. Best bang for your buck in saltwater reels right now. Incredibly solid and powerful. Super smooth top quality bearings make it a dream when fighting a large fish or just a casting retrieve. Really impressed.
Thanh Nguyen : Bad product!
I did love this reel (BG5000) until it broken! I fished almost every day with this reel in the past month since receiving (August 7th) and it worked amazingly, however, it was broken and there is no reason for this reel broken so soon (only 31 days of using it). It started out with the bail did not flip over or close and then the drag broke... not tighten, just keeps spinning. Such a waste of money!
Blue Water Brands : Smooth. Great Drag. Works Great for Surf Fishing!
Was trying to decide between the Daiwa BG and the Penn Battle II. I already had a couple of the previous gen Penn Battle reels, so I decided to buy a pair of these 5000 Diawa BG reels and put them on my 12' surf rods.
These reels are smooth! I replaced a couple of older EmCast reels and there really is no comparison. They are smaller, better looking, smoother and feel like you can really crank on them.
I got the 5000 size because I almost always go back to braided line and these reels hold enough 65lb braid for my surf fishing needs. They fit nicely on my 12' rods and between the handle and the 'oversize digi-gear' it feels like you can really crank a lunker in. I just got back from a trip and the largest fish I caught (unfortunately) was a 3' blacktip shark - the reel had no problem at all (and I wouldn't expect it to!).
The reels more than met my expectation and I would not hesitate to buy again - you won't make a mistake with these reels.
Amazon Customer : LOST IT IN SALTWATER!!
I’ve lost this whole set up in the salt water in Crystal River Florida and somehow managed to reel it back in with another hook by snagging the the rod off the bottom. I was pretty sure it was ruined but I immediately flushed it with freshwater and when I came home gave it a really good rinsing opened it up and did the same, this thing still works perfectly although I’ve heard the smaller sizes all right so fortunate
Oahoosier : HANDS DOWN best value spinning reel
Amazing. BY FAR the best spinning reel for the money. I have about 20 reels, some as much as $300 and this one is my go to. I've actually ordered 2 others since (smaller) to keep on the ready when I'm switching between trout, smallies and largemouth.

RobS : Nicer than I expected
I recently purchased a Diawa BG 3000 and a Balistic 3000, the Balistic is over twice the price and is significantly lighter weight, but the BG is just as smooth and the drag is just as nice as the much more expensive reel. I like both reels and will post an update after I have put a few months of use on them. I will be purchasing another BG if it holds up well fishing this week.

Amazon Customer : Its a good reel.
I have used these in the surf. They are easy to maintain and really smooth. Only issue I have is that sometimes sand can get in the rotor. It is easy to get it out though. I would buy this before I would buy a penn battle.

Chance B : Worst Decision for firstr timer
Honestly I love this reel at first, I had this reel for a month. I used it sparingly maybe a few hours a week. Followed all maintenance procedures. Then the reel was not smooth anymore and did the arm would get stuck during line reeling. I sent it to Daiwa for warranty. It took them about 2 weeks to get back to me. Then they tried to charge me $30 for repairs. I explained that its only a month old. They said they didn't have my receipt. Which is silly because I sent the receipt in the box as directed in the warranty claim. They finally processed the reel for free, however I sent this reel to them on August 13. Its currently September 6 and still no reel. I called them for the fifth time because no email of tracking or any info from Daiwa. The said that the reel will get back to me September 26. I am very disappointed. The WORST CUSTOMER SERVCE I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS. DO NOT BUY THIS REEL OR THEIR PRODUCTS. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS TERRIBLE. IM going to get my money back and buy a shimano
Middle Aged Man : Sooo Smooth. But BIG
This things is LARGE. I bought the 6500 size A lot larger than my Penn 6500 live liner, but also lighter. It is extremely smooth and it looks great! I am proud to walk onto the beach with it. It slings baits very nicely. I recently caught a nice bluefish with it. Just be aware it is nice and big!
D.W. : Best bang for your buck for an inshore/surf saltwater spinning reel
I have four of these reels - two each in the 3000 & 4000 size that I use for inshore and surf fishing with lures and jigs. I pair the 3000 reels with 7' and 7.5' medium power inshore rods and travel rods and occasionally I pair the 3000 with my 8' st croix mojo medium power surf rod. I use the 4000 reel with my 8', 9' and 10.5' medium/medium heavy surf rods. I have caught small inshore trash fish, gator blues, channel catfish, 20+ lb stripers, flounder, croaker, barracuda and tarpon with these reels. Super smooth drag and holds braided line really well. Would highly recommend for anyone tossing lures from shoreline jetties, beach, piers or boats!

chris : Best Bang for your buck
Smooth, great line retrieve, it’s been submerged in salt water, laided in the sand and still smooth as the day I got it
Best line capacity too
Mariah Milano : Awesome Reel - Put To The Test Day 1 And It Exceeded Expectations!
I have always been a Penn & Shimano guy but decided to try this Diawa out and man, am I impressed! First day out hooked into a 7 ft nurse shark and this reel didn't flinch. Caught Gag Grouper all day before the shark and it was flawless. I won't hesitate to buy Diawa reels in the future!
E. Krones : Best Budget Friendly Surf/Inshore Reel
No, this is not a sealed reel, but what do you expect for under $100. This is the perfect saltwater reel for surf and inshore fishing without breaking the bank. Probably the biggest comparable competition to this reel is the Penn Battle 2, but there is really no competition as the BG is a superior reel with superior drag, superior components and superior performance. Go for the BG if you are debating between the Battle and the BG.
I own six (6) of these including three (3) 3000 size, two (2) 4000 size and one (1) 6500 size. I use the 3000 and 4000 sizes every weekend and have caught everything from whiting to 50 lb black drum and even some 4.5 foot sharks on those reels alone. Never have I felt outgunned with any of the reels. They work great for live bait and throwing plugs.
Again, these are not sealed, but you generally do not need a sealed reel for most surf/inshore applications. With that said this has not prevented me from pitching them from inside the surf and even accidentally dunking them. If you take them home spray them off under light water pressure after every use, and open them up after dunking them, you should have no issues. If you insist on having a sealed reel then go elsewhere, like the Penn Slammer iii, which is an outstanding reel that I own, but that will run you $200 - $250 each.
moises arroyo : Daiwa reels run big.
AWESOME reels! Buy it!! FYI. Daiwa reel sizes run big. Daiwa 5000 size reel body is the same size as my Penn Spinfisher V 6500 and holds 140 yards more! I purchased the Daiwa 5000 cause I love the size of my Penn Battle 2 5000. The Daiwa dwarfs it! I was going to pair it with my 6’6” med/heavy ugly stick But I will be using it on my 10’ surf rod instead. :-)
Chris Viverito : Great Reel
This reel is at a fantastic price point & holds up to reels 2-3x its price. The ONLY complaint, which isn't even a complaint, is that it is a litttttttle bit oversized/heavy. For example, I bought a 3000 & it is the size of 4000-4500 sized reels made by different companies. Keep it in mind when buying - 5 stars!

STATSRT : High Quality Product
Just received the Daiwa BG 6500 and spooled with 40 lb. braid. Paired with Penn Heavy Spinning Rod and it's exactly what I had been looking for. Reel is excellent quality and smooth action and line lay to reel is perfect. Once again Daiwa has come through with a excellent product which only those who want to spend hundreds more on a reel can complain about, and then it's probably ego and not product quality. Thanks, Daiwa and Amazon for a job well done.
Nauman Ahmad : One out of four BG 5000 defective
I bought four BG5000. Three of them are perfect. Very smooth and well made. However, one of them came with defect. I noticed squeezing and binding while spinning. I have currently open it and investigating the problem. After the opening and removing the AR clutch assembly, the binding and squeaking is gone. Means something is wrong with the AR bearing. I dont know how to fix it bcoz the manual says not to put grease or oil on the AR bearing.
Tyler : Awesome reel
Amazing reel, super smooth. I got a 4000 Paired with a 9’ star rods paraflex for the surf. Oversized reel, size of penn 5000 and Shimanos 6000s. Great reel already got lots of reds, blues and a jack. Handles big fish nicely. Butter smooth drag. Feels a lot better than my penn battles.

westleyLAKE : Good. Just a little bit too big.
Good. Just a little bit too big. This is just slightly lighter than my DAIWA BG 8000. I've used it several times for fishing fishing large blue fish on party boats. So far no negative issues.
