Answer: I talked a Rep at Mitchell she told me there is no difference between the 300 and the 300c. The C stands for clam and all that means is the way they are packaged. 300 comes in a box and the 300c comes in plastic packaging that can be hung for display like at walmart.
Answer: THese are all old reels, the 300Chad roller bearings, depending on the year the 300 could have had ball bearings or no bearings ie in 1948 you might not have had ball bearings even the mitchel site doesnthave all theinformation but you can look at the parts lists there and make up your own mind .

Answer: I would only use it for salt water if you were fishing for smaller fish (under 10 lbs) . I have used 4lb test as well as 8 and 10lb test and they all work perfectly. This is a great reel no doubt about it.

Answer: It doesn't matter. I use 50 lb test braided line on mine. Braided line is very thin, but strong, so you can put extra strong line on it without a problem. Monofilament is thicker, but it can easily be put on it with no problem. The only problem I see with putting a higher gauge of line on it would be that it might not come off the spool as smoothly when casting. Wish I could be of more help!

Answer: We use a cordless drill to remove and respool line. Otherwise take to your local tackle shop and they can respool for you.

Answer: I dont know how well 12 lb will act as I use 2 lb on mine. The 12 LB might work ok but the reel will not hold as much as light line. Otherwise it is a DANDy reel.
Answer: Michael, I have used 6 lb test since before the dinosaurs. Seriously, I and my fellow fishermen, when we got our first 300's - back in the 1960's , we tried 6, 8, 10 , 15, lb test and found got more hits using 6 lb test, and avoiding use of clips, snaps, etc. This is fishing for speckled trout, red fish (red drum) and flounder here in the gulf of mexico.

Answer: I am just a consumer, but I can't see why it can't be used for saltwater fishing. I have had a Mitchell 300 for over 50 years, but just bought this latest model about a year ago. I have caught freshwater catfish up to 25 lbs on it without a problem. I am not a saltwater fisherman, so I am not familiar with differences between freshwater and saltwater gear other than the physical size of the reel and rod. Wish I could be of more help!
Answer: The Mitchell 300 is probably too small for most saltwater fishing.
Answer: You can use ANY reel for saltwater! Just make sure you always rinse it well in freshwater after use! I used one in both fresh and salt back in the 1970-80’s with no issues, however, I personally recommend using something a bit bigger and made for saltwater. Also, I highly recommend having it serviced (cleaned) at least once a year- depending on how often you fish. It will last a lifetime if you take care of it. I still have my father’s old 301 (before the handles were changeable). I don’t recommend going too much over the line weight/ capacity.
Answer: YES you can use it in saltwater. Just be sure to wash it off with tap water after each use. I have used Mitchell reels in saltwater for years with no problem.

Answer: Well for the one I have -the handle is on the left- It looks like it is made so that you hold the od with he right hand and wind with the left. It dfoesnt look like it is easy to change the direction of wind but the parts list shows many interchangeable parts for righties and lefties.
Answer: The answer is yes. It is very easy to do just like nearly all spinning reels. On the opposite side of the reel from the crank handle is a decorative nut that turns in unison with the crank. Unscrew it, pull the crank out, place it in the other side, and put the nut back on the other side. Simple. It takes less than one minute.

I bought 2 of these reels - a 308 for me, and a 310 for my son. Both of these reels suffer from an unreliable drag system. The drag does not stay where it's set and it constantly loosens on both reels. I have even had to re-tighten the drag while bringing in a heavy trout. The poor drag system ruins this otherwise nice reel.

My first Mitchell reel. I usually use higher end Abu, Daiwa and shimano reels that cost $150+ with gloomis and st. Croix rods. The reel is silky smooth and I use it with the top gander mountain 7'8" spinning rod for jogging and live bait. For the money it's a great reel. I know on the pier many of the old school guys have old Mitchell 300's that are decades old that they use to catch salmon and trout. I'm going to have to get a few more of these reels.????????

My first Mitchell 300, ever. I wasn’t sure how much I’d like this reel, I normally use Okumas, this reel has become my “go to” reel. I can’t justify replacing all of my Okumas for Mitchells without a reason, but as the Okumas wear out they will be getting replaced with these. I would recommend these without hesitation.

I have one of these Mitchell 300s I bought from Walmart and it works great but when I went there to buy a 2nd one, they didn't have them so, I ordered one from Amazon. It looks the same and came in a nice box but the first time out we found out that it's defective. It feels like it's rubbing when you try to bring the line in, it's not smooth at all. I removed the spool to isolate the problem and it still feels like it's rubbing. I tried some reel oil but that didn't help either. I don't know what's wrong with it but it's too late to return it. :(

The poor drag system ruins this otherwise nice reel.

I am a big fan of Mitchell reels. I got my first one not reelly knowing what I was getting into and I loved it. I just put this bad boy on the new ugly stick and holy cow am I blown away. You could not ask for a better reel. All around, whether I am using it for trout, bass, crappie, this thing can do it all. Feels better than it looks. Is extremely high quality and I would definitely buy another for my next rod/reel combo. 5/5 all day!

Mitchelles ive always had good luck with very well built. All i can say is to try the mitchell reels you cant go wrong big fan of the mitchell reels

I have one of these Mitchell 300s I bought from Walmart and it works great but when I went there to buy a 2nd one, they didn't have them so, I ordered one from Amazon. It looks the same and came in a nice box but the first time out we found out that it's defective. It feels like it's rubbing when you try to bring the line in, it's not smooth at all. I removed the spool to isolate the problem and it still feels like it's rubbing. I tried some reel oil but that didn't help either. I don't know what's wrong with it but it's too late to return it. :(
