Questions about Penn - Conflict II Spinning Reel
Q:
What’s the actual weight of Reel....the descriptive doesn’t seem right?
Answer: The reel is very light. The weight is correct. That is the main reason my husband wanted it for me. I am 55 and shot handguns for years in law enforcement practice and competitions. It took its toll.
Q:
Whats the difference in the 5000 and the 5000 LC
Answer: LC is long cast. The spool is tall and shallow to allow the line to come out quicker with less restriction. The regular one is short and deep. Hope this helps.
Q:
What is the little switch on the back of the reel for?
Answer: That is the A/R lever. Anti-Reverse lever. You will notice that the reel will spin in both directions in one position and will only reel in when the lever is in the other position. In other words, the drag is only engaged when the Anti-reverse is enabled.
Answer: on/off switch for anti reverse
Q:
I’m wondering what model # would pair up best for a 7ft. Fenwick medium action rod
Answer: 3500 or 4000 series would pair up good with that rod! Either route you take is perfect for that rod that’s just my opinion!
Q:
Looking for replacement handle for pursuit II 3000
Q:
Hi, can anyone explain why 4000lc (long cast) is 4.8:1 gear ratio, compared to 6.2:1 on regular 4000. also 13 lbs on lc drag, vs 15 on regular
Q:
Penn conflict 5000lcbail does not return on its own is that normal?
Answer: I have never had a Spinning reel that the bail didn't close when you turn the handle. My reel is a conflict 4000 and the bail closes when handle is turned. If the 5000 is a manual bail I am glad that I didn't purchase one. Just an added note, I have a Shimano 6000D Bait runner and the bail closes when you turn the handle.
Answer: No that’s not normal, the bail should trip with minimal effort, unless it is a manual bail. I returned one that was stiff as a board
Answer: All reels should have manual bail close, the automatic bail trip is the most annoying and useless feature of a reel, especially if you throw expensive lures and heavy weights. I love that Penn finally listened and designed these without the automatic bail trip. I remove the automatic bail trip lever on all my reels because I lost too many expensive lures and broke off my line casting heavy sinkers when the bail closed on its own
Answer: long cast reels are supposed to have this feature so when your throwing a 30$ lure as hard as you can into the surf your bail wont trip closed and snap goes your line. Say goodbye to your nice long cast as your lure goes sailing into the abyss!
Answer: The long cast (lc) models have a manual bail so when you make a cast the bail won't accidentally flip or close and snap off your lures/plugs.
Answer: There was a post here on amazon that said all the long cast models close their bail manually, the one I have, 7000lc closes manually.
Answer: Yes. When my husband first got his my stomach dropped because I thought I got him a broken Christmas present. But after doing research we figured out that it’s designed that way.
Q:
What is the line size/capacity for braid on the 2000 series? Non LC
Answer: I use roughly 150 yds of 12 lb. Nanofil. If there are rocks, use the 14 lb. Nanofil.
Q:
Would the 1000 be suitable for ice fishing?
Answer: It probably could since it is small and manageable.
Q:
What long cast reel woul be reccomended for a tica striper collector 7'6" mh action rod?
Answer: It pairs well with a Penn Conflict 2500 with 20 lb
Q:
Wondering why I was sent a spool of fishing line instead of the actual reel?
Answer: It was was the first Chinese iteration of this model. jk
Answer: No idea talk to seller or Amazon
Q:
hi. would it resist saltwater abuse? I do kayak fishing and i was looking for a UL reel to throw small lures. is battle 2 1000 better?
Answer: I have a 1000 and it's great, will definitely take saltwater abuse. Reel size depends on what you're targeting, the 1000 is a small reel for smaller fish trout, panfish, etc
Q:
how heavy is the 4000?
Answer: 12oz. On the lighter side. So match it with a lighter rod. But it’s a strong reel with a sharp fit and finish for the price.
Answer: It’s made of carbon fibre..hence the light weight
Answer: 9.5 oz
Answer: It’s 12oz, but you don’t feel the weight on your rod
Q:
Are the two small, thin plastic washers in the box with my new conflict ii cftii3000 spare parts or do they need to be installed?
Q:
Is this a good reel for surf finishing
Answer: It's a very well built reel. As long as it's cleaned and maintained properly, I would say it will be fine.
Q:
What would be better for a light tackle fluke set up on mojo bass inshore 7ft MF the 2500 or 3000
Answer: I have a 3000, that I use for salt water inshore fishing and it is great, I use the same rod 7ft MF. I Believe you could not go wrong with either the 2500 or 3000. However I have not tried the 2500.
Answer: I would go with the 3000. Not much size difference and you get more line capacity and a stronger drag.
Q:
What model is ideal for a rod 8'-6" long?
Answer: On my 7’ just fine good balance don’t have 8-6’ rods
Q:
What does the c mean?
Answer: LC=LongCast
Answer: LC stands for Long Cast.
Q:
Conflict vs Clash which one is better?
Answer: I own 2 Penn Clash 5000 and 1 Penn conflict3000 !! They're both fantastic reels amatter of fact I'm gonna get the Conflict 5000 and really put it to the test against some striped bass to honestly see which is better so i will leave another answer to this question in a month maybe sooner
Answer: Not sure since I never owned a Clash, all I did was read the reviews and made my decision. I have purchased three Conflicts two 3000's and one 4000. So far I really like these reels.
Q:
What’s up with the sticky drag ? Not smooth??
Answer: Mine is very smooth. Usually a sticky drag is due to contamination on the drag washers.
Q:
What’s size should reel should I get to pair with my 8ft Tica striper collection rod?
Answer: I have a Penn Battle 2-5000 on a TICA Striper 9 foot. Love them together.
Answer: The 5000 long cast will fit well with an 8 foot rod.
Answer: If your casting a long distance, I would get the 5000
Q:
Does this reel have Slow Oscillation ? Most of the good long cast reels do.
Answer: The oscillation is very smooth your line lays on flat the reel come with 2 washers for fine adjustments
Answer: Yes it does
Q:
Hey, pat! my point is that isn't the "8000lc" a long cast reel? the manufacturer uses the "lc" to id the long cast capability.!
Q:
Line capacity for the 7000?
Answer: MONO: 0,36mm 440mt / 0,38mm 395mt / 0,46mm 315mt
Q:
Is this 4000 or 7000? Says 7000 in title but 4000 style?
Answer: The title is incorrect. It is a 4000
Answer: This is 4000 size
Q:
Good for saltwater?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: This is absolutely a salt-water reel. I bought two of them and use them regularly on the beach in Florida. They have been rinsed with freshwater after each outing but no other maintenance for four outings (all day fishing) and no problems.
Answer: Absolutely, but with anything “salt” rinse after use!
Answer: No, this is a fresh water reel
Q:
I want to order this spinning with ball handle 3000
Answer: Good idea
Q:
can I get a spare spool ?
Answer: I would think that you could get one through Penn.
Q:
What is the line capacity for the 2500 model using 15 lb braid?
Answer: I have the 5000 and I put 300 yards of 50 lb test braid line
Answer: Penn website says 220 yards of 15lbs braid.
Answer: 220 Yards. That is what it says on the web.
Q:
what is the weight of the 400?
Answer: Not exactly sure of the weight, however it is very light.
Q:
Is this reel equipped for live lining?
Answer: No. The Penn Spinfisher V and VI has live liner models available.
Q:
Why are there so many product size buttons for the reels? isn't the "8000lc: the same as the "conflict ii long cast"? the pictures are identical.
Answer: NO THE 8000 IS A BIGGER REEL THE 6000 LONG CAST IS IDENTICAL AS THE REG 6000 EXCEPT HAS LONGER SPOOL AND OFCOURSE DEEPER BAIL. I DRAG 20-30 LB YELLOWTAIL IN ALL DAY WITH MY 6000. LIGHT WEIGHT SO YOU CAN THROW IRIONS ALL DAY.
Answer: Because the size determines how much line the reel will hold not sure what the lc or ii means..probably gear Ratio?
Q:
Is the line guide bar supposed to retract automatically when I go to retrieve line, or does it need to be flipped back manually? Or is the reel defect
Answer: All of the Penn Conflict Long Cast models are manual bail. This is not a defect. It is stated on Penn website. I never cared as I long ago stopped using the automatic bail flip when casting to prevent wind knots.
Answer: I have the 2500 not the long cast, but mine does flip back when you reel, but you have to use some force when you do. But it is best practice to flip the bale by hand to minimize wind knots.
Answer: should flip back automatically when you crank handle I have never had a spinning reel that didn't.
Answer: The bail closes automatically but its much easier to do it yourself
Answer: Manually
Answer: Mine closes the bail when I turn the handle. I have the 2 smallest models, so I can't be sure that the large ones are the same.
Q:
Would this pair with a 6'5 rod
Answer: Yes. I use it on a 7’
Q:
Will the long cast take the regular spool also ? And does it come with the regular spool with it

Answer: My husband said it’s for a 9am’ rod. He has the 8000 on a 10’ rod and it’s big

Q:
Why does the bail not flip over automatically when you turn handle after casting ?
Answer: Some reels are designed like that so they don’t flip over when casting and snap your line. In my opinion it’s a good thing.
Answer: To be honest I have never noticed because I never tired to use that feature. I always flip mine manually and tug the line, ensuring there are no backlashes in the line and to avoid wind knots.
Answer: To prevent the bail from shutting and breaking the line when you cast.
Answer: All the long cast models have a manual bail it reduces accidental flips while casting
Q:
Would it be more recommended to use a 4000 or 5000 series for a 9ft rod?

Q:
Why is the 7000lc less expensive than the 5000lc?
Answer: If I had to guess it’s because they don’t sell as many 7000s, doesn’t make since but the smaller more popular ones seem to be more
Product reviews of Penn - Conflict II Spinning Reel
Anthony eosco : Light weight inexpensive reel.
Good spinning reel for light duty saltwater. Handles 30" strippers, blue fish, and false albacore with ease. Cast well for a light inexpensive reel using light lures. You can use this reel paired with a light weight rod and be able to fish all day with no fatigue. I Would recommend using for smaller fish. I personally own 3 and use them for the late summer into the end of the season for false albacore and strippers in the cape cod area. I've never personally had and an issue. My fishing partner used the reel for 2 seasons with alot of use and broke a tooth off the oscillating gear catching keeper size stripped bass in the 40" size. Know what your equipment can handle and you'll have minimal failures. For the money this reel is worth buying.
Amazon Customer : Good real for the money
Probably one of the smoothest reals I’ve owned
Brian Trabue : SO GOOD
So light weight and can cast so far. Great buy!
charles aguado : My Favorite Reel To Date
Paired it with a 7'0 Penn Battalion. Best combo I've ever owned. Lightweight and easy to work without too much strain on the arm. Definitely would recommend this reel to anyone that does a lot of cast & retrieve, jigging, and wants a product that looks just as beautiful as it performs.
Poong : Good
Good product.
I like it because it's light and durable.
NO JAPAN!!!
Jeremy S. Saenz : High Quality Penn reel
Light and dependable. Everything you’d expect from a Penn reel.
Stephen Jones : Took to the Beach Yesterday
I field tested these reels yesterday. Yes, I have two of them. One on a 15' surf rod and the other on a 10 footer. They cast great which is why I purchased them. They are the Penn Conflict II LC 8000 and I was surprised how light they are for the size. They lay down the line so tight and have improved my cast about 20 yards at least. I have not caught anything but Pompano yet so i will let you know how they handle bigger fish. Also do not know how they will hold out but I am taking care of them as the composite materials will break easier than aluminum. When spooling I noticed that the first one loaded front heavy and so when spooling the second I removed the plastic adjustment washer and it loaded perfectly.
Paul K. : Overall a very good reel
Lightweight, easily casts longer distances than average spinner.
The only reason I am giving it 4 stars because after using it four times the anti reverse locked up, warranty covered repair, hoping that it will not happen again in the near future.
Nats13 : You can go wrong with a Penn reel!
I use penn reels for fresh water fishing. They are smooth, light weight, strong and reliable!
Buzz LiteBeer : Favorite Reel!
Bought the 3000 model to add to my collection of Shimano and Daiwa reels. Use it for saltwater inshore fishing. Caught 30” trout, snook, red fish, and flounder on this thing. Its very smooth and has good Line capacity. Little heavy, but, doesn’t bother me at all. Drag feels really good! This thing casts very nice too. By far my favorite reel. High quality reel at a fraction of the price for sure!
TB : Nicr
Nice
Bob : ... of the box the handle would not crank without great difficulty. Oddly
Out of the box the handle would not crank without great difficulty. Oddly, the spool spins easily if handle not used. Suspect some problem with threading or gear mechanism in the handle. Already purchased one before which works great. Hoping this was just a lemon and will re-purchase with hope that this one was one in a bad batch.
lostkey : Excellent reel
Light and smooth. Highly recommended.

Taylor prattson : Good reel while it lasted.
Good reel while it lasted. But only lasted a about 2 months. I’m a serious fishermen and fish 3-4 times A week mostly striper and bluefish I and maintain my reels. I clean my reel after every trip and I grease it with penn grease when needed the gears didn’t last reel still looks good but it isn’t working anymore. Hopefully they will give me a return or warranty since it only lasted 2 months very disappointed because it was really good while it lasted.
michael desosa : Very Disappointed!
Very Disappointed,Right out of the box the bail does not return when you reel! Makes the product unless

traveler one : light weight
great reel for the price, l best the hell out of it and it deals with it. l have used it from the beach and have caught many fish with it. as far as Penn reels go l own 5 others starting over 30 years ago l love them all but for just over 100 dollars this is the one.
Steve Brecht : Would recommend
Solid, smooth surf reel, I bought the 5000 size and love it. Bail is manual which doesn’t matter to me because I operate the manually anyway. Would recommend!
Fitz : Beautiful lite smooth reel
I've been buying Penn reels since i was a kid !! They're the only reels i use !! I bought this reel cause i couldn't believe how light it is !! I love the handle and just about everything about this reel except the bail !! The bail doesn't automatically shut when you go to reel after you cast !! You have to close the bail after you made your cast !! I hate these kind of bails !! Tho some people like them . I like the bail to shut right away when you go to reel in your plug !! Everything else on this reel is absolutely perfect !!! Why Penn did this feature on this reel is beyond me !! I really wish they gave you an option whether you want it or you want the automatic bail !!! That's what they should have done !!!
Jenna Drew : Love it
Perfect and light weight. Smooth. I love it.
Ryan : It's pretty but the bail release after cast is abnormally stiff
I tested 10 of Amazons $50-150 reels, I went with a Abu Revo SX
John foradory : 3k 10 lb pp
I like the 3k with 10 lb braid for inshore fishing SEFL
Jonathan Lyons : Smooth Reel, Great for Inshore Light Tackle, Very Light, Looks Great, Needs to Be Cleaned Often
I really like this reel, it's a Smooth Reel, Great for Inshore Light Tackle, Very Light, Looks Great, etc. However, it Needs to Be Cleaned Often, meaning it needs to be carefully freshwater rinsed. Where the handle meets the side of the reel it very very quickly started corroding in between where the carbon fiber meets the aluminum.
Amazon Customer : Solid reel
Of the 4 reels I use, (older penn, Stradic, Spheros and this one) I was getting a lot of wind knots with this one (30lb braid). I had to completely respool it a few time to get it dailed in. I fill it about 3/4 now which is plenty of line it’s working much better. No more birds nests.
Overall it’s been working pretty well. Cranks smooth and casts nice. I use on a 7’6” St Croix Avid series.
wcl4 : Defective!
Brand new right out of the box and the bail doesn’t close. I suppose it’s better that it happened now vs after the return period.
Altemont : Smooooth
I used this for surfcasting on Chappaquiddick with a 13-ft rod. The action is very smooth. It was easy to spool my own braided line.
John : Light and strong
Very light not smooth but very tight as if handle to every gear is felt but in a good way if u want solid dependable reel this is the one
Shelley N : Great reel
Love my new reel. Great for river fishing for reds, flounder and snook.
Amazon Customer : Done with PENN
Terrible was grinding right out of the box penn’s quality has just gone down hill so bad I have a battle 2 that did the same thing.
Royce : Quality
Husband Loved the speed and light weight.

carl stanley : The bail do eat flip over when you turn handle
Received the first conflict reel, I thought something was damaged in shipping, so I had them send another, i have no idea why Penn would try to sell a reel that the bail doesn't automatically flip when you turn the handle !
I have3 of the older conflict reels, all bails automatically flip over when you turn handle.
$ 180 bad joke !

Amazon Customer : It works
Got noisy pretty fast. Handle is one piece it does't fold. It still works GOOD!
Michael : One of my best reels for the price !!!!!!
Love the reel so far. I purchased the 2500 and mounted it on a 7ft Lew’s Speed Stick rod and boy do they make a great combo. It cast unbelievably far and it operates smoothly. I’ve owned the Conflict 1 for about 3 years and so far it’s still operating perfect. I’ve also owned the Clash a few years and it’s still running strong. To me this Conflict 2 is giving the Clash a run for its money when it comes to how everything is operating so far. I have not owned the Conflict 2 that long so I can’t give an opinion on the longevity yet. By the way Ive only used it for freshwater fishing, mainly bass and cats. But I think it’s one of the best reels for the money out there at what I paid for it on Amazon. I know you can get some nice Shimanos for around the same price but this to me is just as good if not better. I love the looks by the way. Of course Amazon was super quick and wonderful with the purchase.
Shelley N : Great reel
Love my new reel. Great for river fishing for reds, flounder and snook.
blackmajic : Great buy
Great reel. Caught a large nurse shark with no issue.
Marc Pfeiffer : Nailed it
Penn did it again. Excellent casting reel for the price! Paired it with the 12' Penn Prevail, and had excellent results.

Nats13 : You can go wrong with a Penn reel!
I use penn reels for fresh water fishing. They are smooth, light weight, strong and reliable!
William T : Lovely and light reel and something I'm proud to own.
The reel arrived the first time and immediately had issue. The anti reverse switch broke after switching it back forth. Amazon seller was contacted and had sent a new reel immediately two days after requested. This was very welcome and earned much credit with me.
Out the box this product is very light. Not as smooth as some of my other reels, but surprisingly after a day of playing with it and fanangling it seems to have become buttery smooth. The reel spool has a rubber banding that sits flush in a receess, allowing braid to be tied directly. Due to the large capacity a mono backing was used. The bail doesn't automatically shut, which is an absolute must in my eyes. The bail detent holds open and closes with authority. The line lay was perfect and precise out of the box.
The biggest strength of this reel is how ridiculously light it is. Using a polymer and carbon fiber accents for weight savings. Some may not be happy with the choice as polymer seems less durable than metal, but the same was said about Glock when it first came around. Paired with a St. Croix Mojo surf in the 9" length, the rod was very very light and will allow for all day casting with minimal fatigue. I look forward to using this and putting it to the test.
Amazon Customer : Great quality saltwater reel
Presently up to about 8 of these model reels. Love the quality.
QOTN : Hubby loves it
This is what my husband asked for for Christmas, and he loves it. BUT you should know in advance that the bail does not flip automatically, you must flip it manually. We didn't know tis and thought it was broken. We were very happy when we learned that it was designed that way to eliminate one more part that could break and need repair or render the reel useless.
K. Smith : So disappointed with this purchase.
Nothing but wind knots. I've stripped almost half the line off the spool, which has helped a little. And I'm a long time Penn fan and the original Conflict 4000 is amazing, so I thought the Conflict II would be even better. Not even close, so disappointed.
