Answer: If it’s dedicated to crappie you could go smaller. 2500 is very versatile but I’d do 1500 or 2000 for a pur crappie setup.

I originally ordered the 2500 but it went missing in transit and then was out of stock so I opted for the 3000 which I’m pleased with for salt water. It’s holding 20 lb braid and has nice action.

Answer: 5000 is a great size to throw lures for big fish like strippers. But keep in mimd might be tiresome if you are not an avid lure fisherman due to the size but has plenty of power to pull fish from the rocks.

Answer: Yes, mine has always been used in saltwater. As far as I know, Penn is or has always been made to use in saltwater.

Answer: Use mine strictly in salt, more specifically the surf. As harsh conditions as you can get and it’s held up well. Just remember to tighten the drag completely and rinse under fresh water after every use. Should last a good while. Solid reel for the money.

Answer: You can still bring in decent size fish with the 2500 dont let people tell you different. People will also try saying baitcasters are better and cast further but this is not true spinning reels cast further just not as accurate as a baitcasters. 2500c is good for fresh and salt water fishing and you can pull in atleast a 25lb fish with the right rod.

Answer: Fresh water, salt water, chlorinated water, bath water.... whatever you prefer

Answer: Would make a prominent freshwater setup. It stands up to the salt no problem and is smooth for the money. Can't go wrong with a reel that is either left or right handed retrieve.

Answer: Probably would be ok. Although you may want the larger 4000 series. I like the 2500 series for ultra light use.

Answer: The spool recommends 6-10 lbs mono. I am using a high quality monofilament 10 pound line for this lower weight. Braid line doesn’t seem to be any less diameter than mono at lower test line lbs.

Answer: The difference is the weight of the reel and drag strength. I would say about 1.5 oz difference between them starting at 12 oz with 2500c .Max mono line at 10lb and braid at 20 lb . 3000 max mono would 12lb and max braid at 30lb .

Answer: Yes this is a good starter combo . For inshore reds and flounder and speckled trout. 20lb test and be sure to rinse it with fresh water once you get back from fishing so it will rinse off the salt .

Answer: I have no doubt that it would be good for flounder, but I have never fished for drum. However it is good for strippers up to at least 32 inches.

Answer: Handle is a strong composite carbon like material. Don’t worry about the handle breaking unless it was stomped or jumped on, but by then your rod would break first.

Answer: Same thing as the pursuit. I have caught many fish on the pursuit with the same material and I beach fish with it and no signs of wear other than visual

Now the quality is not as good as the more expensive pen reels I own but this is perfect for having on my flats boat getting tossed around. I bought the 4000 and have had it one day and got this upper slot red on it, it performed flawlessly! Bought it because I was getting man handled by fish so slapped some 20 pound braid and your set. It is as good as pursuits very smooth not heavy and you dont feel bad beating on it! Great value and must buy for the angler on a budget!

Saw Penn had released the new wrath at iCast as a more affordable option for those on a budget but still want the Penn quality. I immediately ordered it as a go to option for my kayak. This reel is solid and smooth not mention it looks tough. If you are a fisherman on a budget and or you want to have a quality reel that should you capsize or say let your kid use it and it gets knocked around it won’t cost a small fortune to replace than just buy it.

Reel is tough good drag. Pair it with power pro 8 or braided spider wire to make your cast long and smooth. Tried it with other less expensive braids and it wasn’t as smooth with those.

Great with 8 lb test mono Cajun red line; nice tight drag, smooth far casting. Would recommend for pacific mackerel, surf perch, or freshwater panfish. Great all around reel; be sure to rinse after salt water use!

I purchased this for my son to use as I was looking for a smaller size for him. With him, I know he will be dropping it and will be hard on the reel so figure this would be the route to go and replace it when needed. Its spooled with 20lb braid and has performed fine with no issues. The one noticeable difference is that its not as smooth as other reels on the market. It has a slight wobble which I remember was more common of the spinning reels from years past. Newer market reels (low and high end) are a lot smoother IMO. Time will tell how it holds up as this is used in Saltwater.

Stealing from Penn! I added the drag upgrade and added some power pro. This is my new workhorse. If it dies I will happily buy two more to replace it and it even comes with a standard manufacture warranty. Thank you Penn. The 8000 series and 6000 series for me so much better at night then having to deal with backlash and bird nests in the dark. No shade to my old ambassadors and Calcutta , but this amazingly priced product makes it fun for everyone who comes with me not just me; and if they break it who cares? Perfect product to keep even as a back up at this price point. If you spend tons of money with all the things leading up to a trip only to have a failure of your gear ruin it, keep this as a viable spare and continue with your outing.

I do like the sturdiness, but the only flaw,(which will prove fatal) is the reel handle. It is not made like Penn's better quality saltwater reels. The reason is because the reel handle has the female part for the screw bolt on the other side to connect to which makes this reel great for those that want to switch hands if preferred. I however noticed that it is a bit loose and that comes with the territory when you want to save a little money. (Loose meaning it has play, but works fine). Overall performed well under surf fishing conditions using a 4 oz spider weight and heavy surf coupled with 20lb mono.

I used a Penn 720 reel as a kid. Still have it, consider it “retired” it’s over 30 years old... I recently purchased Pflueger President 25 spinning real, super smooth, very light, 10 ball bearings, <$60, it’s my everyday reel but decided I needed a backup/guest reel and ordered this Penn. I knew it to be a class-step down from the Pflueger, but figured it would be a serviceable back-up... I was wrong! The Pflueger has me much too spoiled. I’m returning the Penn and investing another $30 to get second Pflueger. It’s so much smoother, casts further and has a lever to turn off/on the anti-reverse which allows the spool to free spin with the bail in place which is important to me. I’m sure the Penn will last a long time based on my own experience, and though it’s a budget/value reel, it’s simply not very enjoyable to fish with, to me.

I'm a big advocate of simple fishing and this reel is perfect and versatile. I use it to catch small sunfish as well as 6 lb bass. It's smooth and durable with a reliable drag. It also looks cool.

One thing that makes this reel different is that there is no "reverse" switch to let out line. This can be considered a benefit to brand new fishermen/women because it helps avoid confusing knots, however it can take a bit of getting used to for the experienced individual that is used to using a reverse switch to optimize the line for casting situations.

All-in-all, I highly recommend this reel.
