Questions about Okuma Magda Pro Line Counter Levelwind Trolling Reel
Q:
Will my package arrive today?
Answer: My 8 ball says "Don't Count On It"
Q:
30dx
Answer: Difference between 20 and 30 is line capacity and that's it
Q:
Is there a right handed reel
Answer: Yes....MA-30DX
Q:
which is better the 20dx or the 30dx
Answer: Neither is better. The only difference is line capacity. If you need more than 300yds of line go with 30dx
Answer: The answer would depend on the application you're using the reel for, the line size and amount needed. The 30dx will hold more line and heavier line, so if your style of fishing would require a higher test line or longer amounts of line you should use the 30dx. I have used my reel with 20# line for trolling for salmon successfully.
Answer: It all depends on the diameter (Pound test ) of the line and the type of fishing you will be doing.......the 30 has a larger spool size than the 20.
Answer: Both are the same reel only thing is the 30 holds heavier line, So it comes down too what will you be fishing for?
Q:
can u cast with this reel?
Answer: Yes you can. But it is a open face reel, so you will have to set your star drag to match the amount of weight you are casting. Otherwise you will have nothing but problems with back lashes. Fredfish
Answer: It will cast but it was designed for trolling. If you are looking for a casting reel I would look for a better suited reel.
Answer: No. This is not a "baitcaster". It is meant for bottom fishing off of a boat or pier, or trolling off a boat.
Answer: you can, but not real well more for trolling
Q:
Anybody know line difference between the 15 and the 20?
Answer: 15 is smaller in size than 20. Also 15 DX won't hold much of the 20 lb line. It might hold 100 yds or a lil over but its just always better to have enough line.
Q:
Will this hold 100 yards of a 100 lb line
Answer: Nope
Q:
What size reel is best when trolling for kokanee/trout with downriggers? What size line should I use?
Answer: If you can go size 15....for ultra light kokanee trolling rods, its still a lil big. I loaded mine with 20 lb braid which is the diameter of 6 lb mono...or you can spool 10 lb main...my leaders stay 8 lb fluorocarbon. I use to use this reel but then I switched to very small low profile non line counter reels.
Answer: I use this real and many other reels with my downrigger. Don't think reels is as important as rod. I use a very rod that can be loaded very well. Loading up rod will help catch fish. Using the proper line release is also very important to catch more fish. I use 20lb mono and braided for all my downrigger poles. Live in colorado where Lakers get huge. Better safe than sorry.
Answer: I use this reel on dipsy divers. Helps keep track of depth. Using downriggers just my spinning reels. I also use 50lb braid no matter what with a 2 to 3 ft leader of mono.
Q:
How many pounds will the drag hold without slipping ?
Answer: Not more than 15 lbs. I netted a nook on columbia this year from my boat while trolling herring and I forgot to loosen the drag...the fush hooked and the rod went more rhan half under the boat..but 40 lb trilene mono holded tuff and my marker on line fir depth was there where i left it...like an unch above the leveler of the reel. Season 4....no drag washer change nothing. If you wipe it good after the trip and make sure tge reel don't bounce around in the boat, its a good value for money for a good time span.
Answer: I use 50 lb mono and I can snap it with the drag tight so I guess 50+ is the answer
Q:
20 or 30 for PNW salmon fishing?
Answer: I have both, but the 30 gives you more line and weight as you never know what you will tie into when fishing for salmon. Also, the 30 definitely for ocean salmon fishing, I use 20 for steelhead in the river mostly.
Answer: I think it may be a matter of preference. The 30 is a little bit bigger and holds more line. I’d suggest you go to the Okuma website and read the specs. It may help in your decision. I have the 15 model and I have been successful using it for Kokanee fishing.
Answer: Larger one as salmon can and will run off 100+ yards in their first run.
Answer:
Answer: I have a couple magna pros loaded w 12’ leadcore, and a top shot of mono. Mainly troll in Great Lakes for walleye, I would think for salmon you would want the most line capacity, due to longer runs...
Q:
this rod served in freshwater
Answer: i use this rod to troll in freshwater
Q:
Is the MA 45DX for salt or strictly fresh water fishing?
Answer: Fresh water....ppl do use it for salt water. I ssy rinse it..
Q:
Why my 30DX reel does not come with mounting brackets and screws? where to get the them to mount onto my rod?
Answer: The bottom of the reel has a curved rail. That sits on pole, butt end. There is a fixed slot and another slot that moves in and out. The rail on the reel goes into these. As you screw the mount that moves, it tightens up on the reel.
Answer: Not to sure, I would contact the manufacturer
Q:
Do you have any right handed reels..
Q:
Left handed means left hand reel right?
Answer: Left hand reel means the handle is on the left side as you look down at the line counter. Most right handers hold the rod in their right hand and reel with their left. Therefore eighties need a left hand retrieve!
Q:
Can you take this fishing?
Answer: These work well I use them for fishing wallye in montana. They work perfect.
Answer: Jake, can you please provide a more direct question and I will help try and answer for you. The Magda Pro is one of our most popular reel sin the Okuma line and is designed for Salmon/Walleye/lake trout trolling applications. you can write directly to me with your questions at john@okumafishingusa.com
Answer: Sure can, but it won't bait it's own hook.
Answer: Yes
Q:
What is the ratio to reel in
Answer: The MA-30DX has a gear ratio of 4.0:1
Answer: I'm not exactly sure but it is in the middle range. A good ratio though as a few pigs I realed in last year this was perfect.
Q:
Can anyone verify Right or left handed? Description says dlx ( left handed), part number and picture is dx (right handed model) Thanks if anybody inow
Answer: If line counter is up and handle is on left side, like the picture, it’s left handed.
Answer: You reel right handed
Answer: I believe you can get either
Q:
Is the 20dx a more compact reel
Answer: The 15DX would be the most compact with the 20DX being next in line.
Answer: As compared to 45 dx....yesssss....and a tad smaller than 30.....If you fishh mono..dont get less than 30...if you fish braid...20 will be the way to go
Q:
What is the differance between the okuma magda pro line counter levelwind trolling reel and the convector model
Q:
can you use the reel for jigging?is it heavy?
Answer: You could use it for jigging. It's not real heavy.
Answer: check the weight...in specification...is hard to advice...depends how strong you are...i am using it with downrigger set up...
Q:
Is this ideal for small fish like lake trout. I like the counter option that lets me know how much line i have to reel out according to depth. Thanks
Answer: i have 2 magda 45 and one 30 i use them trolling my lake for big rainbows on 81/2 foot trolling rods with 20-30# line but i could use lighter leader and fish for smaller 2-3 pounders thing is they are too big for a smaller rod seat and they hold 600 feet of 30# line daiwa makes some lighter weight combos with line counters which are essential yuo gotta know how much is out and what depth you are out
Answer: Ideal is a strong word. If you buy the Magda Pro 20, which is what I use for musky, it is the smallest model and it will count the line footage and reel fish in. If I was to go trolling for lake trout I would take this reel off of my heavy musky rod and put it on a suitable rod for lake trout without hesitation.
Answer: i found these by typing in trolling reel level wind with line counter so maybe try lightweight trolling reel with line counter daiwa makes some good ones good luck and tight lines
Answer: i dont know if you have BigR stores near you but right now they have a sweet lightweight daiwa trolling rod and reel with linecounter $60.00
Answer: Hi Josee, this reel works great for lake trout. As I answer this e mail I just got home from a fishing trip and got my limit. The counter is the top reason that I bought the reel. So I can tell you that I am sure you will be happy with this reel.
Answer: I only know this is good for the ocean fishing. I am not sure this is good for the fresh water.
Q:
Ed diagram for ma30dx ? took it apart to clean and lube and cant remember how to put it back togetrher?
Answer: You can email us at Ron@okumafishingusa.com or Kevin@okumafishingusa.com and we can forward you a schematic via email.
Q:
What does the X stand for in the MA-45dx?
Q:
Just put line on this reel, and the casting control knob fell off. Unable to replace. What do I do now?
Answer: Cost to much to fix,I use a Garcia
would this reel be good for stealhead
Answer: It’s great for trolling. I use it for trout and Kokanee. I suppose you could use it for steelhead. But if you plan on casting, I wouldn’t use this one.
Answer: Ive no idea
Q:
Can i use this reel to catch small tuna and king fish?
Answer: I believe it would work fine with fish up to 25 lbs.
Answer: I would think so my son and I couldn’t 87 pounds spoonbill with it with no problem
Answer: Yes, I would think so , set it up with a good rod, and pump them in
Answer: Yes
Q:
will 1000ft of stainless wire fit on tjis reel 30#
Answer: The MA-45 DX reel has a capacity of 330/30 (0.55 mm ) in diameter. Im not sure what the diameter of the wire line is but it should fit if the diameter is under .55 mm
Answer: do not know.... sorry...
Answer: Yes
Q:
Will the 30 dlx hold 100 yds of 18lb. lead core + backing? i really want the left retrieve and the 45 only comes in right.
Answer: I put 100 yrds 12lb lead core plus backing plenty of room put lead core on first then backing to fill spool. Then take off carefully and reverse put backing on. this way you know exactly how much backing you need
Answer: Yeah I used 20lb mono I filled up a 1/3 of the spool roughly and I used 18lb lead core
Answer: Wouldn't put it on that 30, I use mine as rigger rods so it's all mono but there wouldn't be much backer if your running boards off them. Wouldn't use them for anything more then a 5 color.
Q:
I bought a 20 and in the description it says left handed reel so i ordered one and got a right hand retrieve not what i wanted can you send me a left?
Answer: Would imagine they could
Q:
When it says left handed does that mean you would reel with the left hand or it is set up for you to use your left hand to hold the rod while reeling?
Answer: Monica
Answer: Handle is on the left side of reel for you to use your left hand to reel with while gripping rod with right. I have found this to be with every conventional or baitcast reel stated to be a LEFT hand model. Unlike Spinning reels where a Left hand version has you reeling with your right hand and holding rod with left.
Answer: Left Hand Reel--- Handle is on left side
Answer: You are going to reel with the left hand!
Answer: It means it is to be used by a left handed person. If you are right handed, buy a right handed reel.
Q:
Will this reel/counter work with thinner lines like 10lb mono?
Q:
Is this ma45dx right handed ?
Answer: More then likely. DXL would indicate if it is Left.
Q:
Will the MA-20DX hold 100 yards of 0.68 diameter lead core line?
Answer: Its more like 85 yards
Q:
How does this magda line up to the daiwa accudepth? looking for entry level lc reels. will ma-15dx work for trolling walleyes?
Answer: Counter doesn't always reset but reel works well.
Q:
is the depth counter removable?
Answer: No
Q:
Will the counter on the MA-45DX work using 12lb line?
Answer: Line size has no bearing to the operation of the line counter. Use any line weight you want.....the reel will read the amount of line let out.
Answer: i have 20 lb.small dia. braid and works perfect.. the line counter works off internal gears.
Answer: I use 12 trilene 'big game' line for stealhead on mine and it's always worked well.
Answer: I think it will. I used 25lb on mine and caught a 15 lb fish before :)
Answer: Yes!!!
Q:
Is this reel for fresh water only?
Answer: No
Answer: No
Answer: No
Answer: No
Q:
Will the Okuma 30dx hold backing and 10color lead core line?
Answer: Probably not. It holds about 400 yds of 40 lb mono. You would be better off with a trolling real. With colored line you really don’t need a counter, do you?
Answer: Yes 10 color will fit on this reel. They do make a smaller diameter of leadcore now also!
Answer: i do not have an answer for you regarding this question... sorry...
Q:
is the okuma 15 dx levelwind line counter reel left handed
Answer: No.... Left hand is MA-15DLX
Q:
Are they right hand crank?
Answer: The Ma-30DX is a right hand crank reel. We offer it in a left hand model as well which is the MA-30DLX
Answer: I just received my reel and in the description it says left handed reel I received a right hand crank not what I wanted.
Answer: They are right hand. The left hand crank ones would have a model number of MA-30DLX.
Answer: They come in right or left hand retrieve.
Answer: both right and left
Answer: Yes. If thats the model you order
Answer: Yes they are.
Q:
will this reel hold 20 colors of 18# lead line?
Answer: I have 10 colors on it with 300 yards of 30# mono. It might be able to.
Q:
are the 20 an 20 the same size dimensions?
Answer: 20 and 20 what?
Q:
how much does the reel weigh?
Answer: The Ma-30DX weighs 16.4 ounces.
Answer: 1.4 lbs
Q:
what size for musky?
Answer: 20 or 30 but 30 to be safe!
Q:
Can you get this reel in a right hand retrieve?
Answer: They are standard right i believe I use left, but 15 doesn't offer left 20 and 30 do!
Q:
Does the left handed model have the crank on the left side?
Answer: Man..no offense but I'm kinda speechless on this question...simple answer will be yes!!
Answer: Yes it does
Q:
What model is the smallest ?
Answer: the MA-15D is the smallest size we produce in the Magda series.
Answer: The 15 is the smallest
Q:
Are these good for saltwater offshore big game. Like Kings, whahoo, Dolphin etc
Answer: The Magda Pro trolling reel is a freshwater trolling reel. Not recommended for offshore big game. For offshore big game reels, I would suggest checking out our Makaira series reels. The Makaira reels are 2 speed lever drag reels
Answer: I use it for dolphin, but not the size 20 reel. I use the 30. I've caught some decent fish- >20 lbs. and some nice blackfins up to 10 or so pounds. If you're going after wahoo or big kings, I'd go with the 40 size and spool it lighter. One caveat though- rinse them well, and oil them often. They can get water inside the case and salt causes corrosion.
Answer: It’s a very large reel, depends on how much line your putting on. I’m using for leadcore. I’m sure it tells you the capacity of line and weights you can put on this reel,
Answer: Sorry I'm sure they would hold up but I've never used them in salt water. I would imagine as long as you cleaned them up after every use they would work
Product reviews of Okuma Magda Pro Line Counter Levelwind Trolling Reel
Mumford : A great value!
I bought this reel to begin fishing for Kokanee in NE Washington state. I needed a line counter reel that wouldn’t break the bank so to speak. I fish from a kayak. On my maiden voyage my fish finder was indicating fish at a depth of 25’. I wanted to run my lure at a depth of 20’. I let out enough line to be at that depth. And on my very first attempt at catching Kokanee I was successful! I fished a number of more times and was successful each time. It proved to me that I didn’t have to buy a $100+ reel to catch fish.
I expect this reel to perform for years to come.
Kyhamil : Great reel. Smooth action. Worth the money.
First fish caught was a 80lbs tarpon. So id say its been tested properly. Made easy work of it.
Fishin Bob : Small and Tough
You just can't beat Okuma. I have 4 of these and 3 other Okuma reels. Light on the pocketbook, lightweight and tough on the fish. The depth counter is especially handy for getting to the right depths which is a must when fishing for the big Rock fish in the Chesapeake. With 300 yards of #40 braid (they'll hold a thousand) there isn't much they can't handle. Only down side is that they are made in China, but the same goes for the other major brands.
Sher : Great price
We love these reels. All we use for lake Erie walleye.
AL : Excellent for the $$$$$ 45DX
I love these reels. Great quality for the price. I use them on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The line counters work well, so I know just how much line is out. Would highly recommend for those anglers that are budget minded. Well worth the price. I put 40 lb. mono on it and spooled 300 yards on it. Good for any big fish in the Bay.
Steve in Seattle : Bail broke on first use
Drag bail lever broke on first use. My son took it out to simply drop it 30 ft to fish for small rock fish, by the time he came back it was broken off and not usable.
electricdino : Great at this price point!
After years of using Shimano 600LCs, I figured I would try out something a little more affordable. I use these reels for trolling on Henry's Lake in Idaho, catching different types of trout. I bought one of these and the Okuma 303D. Heres what I found
Pros
- Great price! Half the price of the Okuma 303D and a quarter of the price of a Shimano 600LC.
- Great drag! As sensitive as a Shimano and easier to use than the temperamental drag that the Okuma 303D had.
Cons:
- Temperamental line counter. The line counter would get slightly off on the number alignment in the viewing window. It would eventually right itself every time or would right itself when the reset was pressed, but I'm worried about the long term durability.
- plastic parts. The Shimano and Okuma 303D are all stainless steel parts. This reel has a lot of plastic parts. That said, the plastic feels solid. The drag wheel would probably be my main concern, but only time will tell how it holds up.
Caught many fish over the fourth of July week with this and it performed on par with my Shimano and Okuma 303D. I've had the counters go out on my Shimanos and they have broken down over the years. At this price point, I could buy 4 of these for the same price and probably get more years out of them, but only time will tell. Nevertheless, I was impressed at the performance at this price. The Okuma 303D and Shimano look nicer with the stainless steel, but come at a premium price. If money were no object, I would probably stick with the Shimano due to similar performance, stainless steel parts and proven track record. If I find this holds up well over the next few years, I will likely purchase these in the future instead.
SLS : Great Value
Great reel for the money. Smooth operation and line counter works well.
Boostedone : Not bad
Was using Shakespeare ATS line counters and needed another couple trolling set ups. The ATS reels have served me well for the money so far but have come close to these in price. Never owned an Okuma reel so gave these a try. I like the power handles that are included and the drag works well. Only dislike I have is putting the reel into free spool it some times forces you to reel in some for it to allow you to put it into free spool. Did it enough times on my first trip out with them to notice it. It will go into free spool but the spool is still "locked" into forward. Pulling line out sometimes gets it to unlock or cranking the handle and trying again...
Rocky : Five Stars
Works perfectly as described!
David G. : Good Buy for Price
So far have not had any problem with this product.
Sher : Great price
We love these reels. All we use for lake Erie walleye.
Roy Michael : Just What I Wanted
The reels arrived super quick and were just what I wanted, the package was well packed and the reels arrived in unopened new boxes, the action of the reels was great, certainly the level of workmanship and assembly that you would expect from Okuma. These two reels are replacements for my originals that had lasted me several years, in fact I still have and use the old ones, I just wanted these new ones for the line counter and the price was right.
tony : great line counter
I have 4 of these now for my trolling set up. Enough said!
Bob Stewart : Nice trolling reel
I use this reel for lead core trolling works real well,
Joe : Great reel!
Works great. Easy operate from kayak. Very solid construction.
Dave S : Five Stars
Best value for price! Strong enough for most freshwater fishing applications.
Hickolas : Impressive reel
I bought two of these reels MA-20DX for trolling the upper missouri river and lakes. So far so good. I am confident in my lure presentations with the line counter. I recommend reading the manual for tips on how to extend the life of the reel. Most importantly don't leave it with drag set real tight for a long period of time as it can wear out. the model i purchased is a RIGHT HAND crank. If you prefer to reel with your left hand make sure to order a model with an L in it. ie MA-20DLX. I gave it four stars because there are better out there, but probably not in this price range.
Amazon Customer : Value
Nice basic line counter for beginners.
Joselito Real : MISLEADING PICTURE, MISLEADING DESCRIPTION OF RIGHT AND LEFT HANDEDNESS. BEWARE!
The pictures display looks like you'll have to operate it with the left hand, but when it arrived, after closer inspection, you'll have to reel it in with your right hand! A right handed person will hold the rod with his right hand while reeling the line with the left hand. All of my baitcasting and spinning rods are operated this way. I hold the rod with the right hand for the force required and reel the line with the left hand. I am a right handed person and hold the rod with the right hand so this is absolutely the reverse. And your version of left handed is more expensive!!!

Nice basic line counter for beginners.
Charlie Wedel : Very nice for the price!
Works really well.
Rich W : Best bang for the $$$
Have these mounted on all my trolling rods and couldn't be happier with them. Have used them quite a bit on the Great Lakes (Ontario & Erie), and have tackled everything from walleye to salmon and multiple species of trout with them. I'm not a charter capt, just a weekend warrior, so I'm not depending on these to earn a living (although I wouldn't be worried about using these even if I was). Overall these are great performing reels that have everything you need and nothing you don't. Could the line counter be better? Yes. But they still do the job. The drags work well and overall the reels seem durable and smooth performing. I see no need for a recreational fisher to shell out more money for higher priced reels.
Brian Krull : Only lasted one year
This reel broke after only a year, which is made even worse by the fact that here in the Northeast we only fish the lake a few months out of the year. It probably was used about 30 times before it broke. There are clearly much better options out there
Code Blue : Good deal.
These reels are great for trolling for stripers in the lake for the money.
Clevor : Save your money
used once!! wont unlock unless you have the handle in the right spot.. unbailed on me reeling in a striper.. total disappointment.. got it in the winter to late to return.. my loss.. going to take it apart and see what happened. I have two of them, not sure on the other one.. company said return it for service on my dime.. that's it..
Totally ImAussieBull : Very nice reel!
A couple of summers ago, my father and I went on a guided salmon fishing trip. I'm always watching professionals to try and learn what tools or gizmos they use. I figure if it's what professionals use day in day out, then it must be something that can take a little more abuse and most likely works at peak performance. Anyway, I got talking with our guide about the reels he had outfitted his rods with. This reel is as close to the model he had that I could find. I've been super happy with these reels across the board, but where they really shine is trolling because of the line counter. Find the depth where the fish are, and dial right down to them very quickly. I have been keeping my eyes on Okuma for a while now, and I'm very satisfied with this product. I want to point out that you really don't need a line counter, but it makes getting on the fish a very quick process. I used to mark line or count revolutions while back reeling before this. However when everyone in the boat is hooked up, and all you want to do is get back down to the fish quickly, these reels save time.
Sher : Great price
We love these reels. All we use for lake Erie walleye.
Dave Q. : Does not count line out accurately
You need to let out at least twice as much line than the counter indicates. Not at all accurate. The reset button for the counter sticks and is an annoyance is you are busy and into fish. I purchased two of these models and they both have the same issues.
Kyra Z : Great product for the price
Works well. Great value for the price. Will be ordering more.
Henry T. Dickens JR : good Product
good Product
Jeff : works great
I bought the smallest version for trolling in freshwater lakes. the line counter always works. my buddy and I both have one and it really helps knowing how much line we each have out when making turns etc. which helps prevent tangles. the trout around here seem to like rapalas on about 120 ft of line at about 2.2 mph
ReaderDave : Great value.
1st season with the new pair of reels. They feel as good as much more expensive reels and far better than anything I have in this price range. If using lead line remember to get the larger reel due to line diameter and still room for backing.
Great reel.
Amazon sucks : Inconvenient
Description stated this was a DLX model (left handed) and that's what I ordered. Right handed model was delivered. One reel has bent crank handle. Now has to be returned. It was my impression that Amazon was for convenience. Would've been less time consuming consuming to purchase at a sporting goods store. Product however appears to be of decent quality
julianne m. jones : Very nice real for a real good price
Very nice real for a real good price!
Performs very well using it for deep sea fishing, depth of 220 feet, 20lb test line, with plenty of extra line on the real to spare.
Brings in heavy lingcod, no problem.
Dave S : Five Stars
Best value for price! Strong enough for most freshwater fishing applications.
Mark Limberg : Very smooth.
I use this for lead core line and it is very smooth and reliable. Great price too.
Joe : Great reel!
Works great. Easy operate from kayak. Very solid construction.
Kyhamil : Great reel. Smooth action. Worth the money.
First fish caught was a 80lbs tarpon. So id say its been tested properly. Made easy work of it.
Hematite : Great Reel.
We have a couple of these now, and they work great for trolling for walleye in Michigan.
David G. : Good Buy for Price
So far have not had any problem with this product.
Brian Krull : Only lasted one year
This reel broke after only a year, which is made even worse by the fact that here in the Northeast we only fish the lake a few months out of the year. It probably was used about 30 times before it broke. There are clearly much better options out there
Leighton R. Dunaway : Free spool release
I haven't even used this reel yet but its already being assigned a back-up role. After flipping the free spool release the spool won't release if there is even the lightest bit of tension on the line. I have to use my thumb to rotate the spool slightly; presumably that relieves tension on a release mechanism that is hanging up. I don't know if this is by design or if I got a lemon but either way this will not be my go to reel for Kokanee trolling as I had planned.
Cris : Okuma
Great real good price
dhyslop : Solid reel
I use this reel for kayak fishing, no complains, I have fliped in the surf a couple of times, its been soaked in saltwater and sand, but it's easy to clean and keeps going like new. I do recommend it.

Lori Fortier : Happy
