Answer: That’s a trick question. Depends on what’s conformable for you. I am left handed and I have to use a right handed reel. I have meet people who can use both. It’s all about what’s comfortable with you and whether you have to switch hands when casting. If you cast with a right handed reel and find yourself switching hands you probably need a left handed, visa versa. Hope this helps.

Answer: Lots of different setups, I’ve run it with 30lb braid, I’ve run it with a fluoro leader, currently running with straight 10lb test mono. If you’re new to bait casting run mono, it’s a lot cheaper to cut out a birds nest of mono than braid.

Answer: Backlash is more common with braid... reason people use flouro or mono to learn is because once you have a good feel of the casting and settings, it is least likely you will backlash.
Answer: No. The backlashes will become much less frequent while you get used to a baitcaster. Backlashes with braid are an absolute nightmare, way worse than mono or fluoro
Answer: the reel has setting for mono, fluorocarbon, braid etc.. I have braid, set it on 2 and have no problems
Answer: You might have less of a backlash issue, but you can always play with the brake setting and some of the casting technique to improve / reduce backlash.

Answer: If you get this reel, read the manual. It will tell you pretty much what you need to know. You can’t neglect. I still adjust the spool tension and have mine set on 4 for flouro and 3 mono depending on if I fish top or deep. The amount of line and dirt will affect the reel’s performance. Shimano has a good staff to maintain your reel’s performance. Me? A reel breakdown is a great excuse to get another reel.

No Toro-caca : Save your money and stay away from the DC version.
Shimano is an incredibly innovative company and they have had many great breakthroughs the last two decades with super well built rods and reels. I have not had a malfunction or usage break on any of the reels I have purchased which my wife would tell you have been quite a few. I purchased a couple of the "DC" version reels and frankly I don't think the advantage is worth the money. The best bait casting reel computer known to man is at the end of your thumb. So the no toro-caca advise is to keep practicing with the standard version and save money.

This is a wonderful reel for the money. The spool control on the SLX DC is not perfect, so it still requires some manual breaking with the thumb. So do not think the DC technology on these reels is magic. However, the DC feature still greatly reduces the need for thumb breaking and that results in longer casts and a more forgiving baitcaster. (Meaning that even if iDC4 cannot avoid all birds nests and overruns by itself, it will still eliminate many of them.)
This reel is typical Shimano quality. The handle is very comfortable. The retrieve is smooth. The drag is smooth. The fit and finish are great. A lot of people do not like the matte graphite finish, but I love it because I do not have to worry about scratches, scuffs, fingerprints, and all the other trials of fishing ruining a reel with a gloss finish.
The best thing about this reel is that you just get to spend more time fishing. The DC technology helps to avoid birds nests and overruns. Less time maintaining a reel is more time casting. However, the DC technology also only needs to be set up once a day. You set the tension control knob, and that is it. You do not need to reset the reel every time you change a lure. You do not need to change the settings every time you turn to face a different direction because the wind is different. It just saves a lot of time throughout the day and results in more fishing.
The only thing I would advise is that people who own this reel should purchase the Carbontex drag washers. The sheep shear drag washer that comes from the factory works great. However, the Carbontex washers are cheap, easy to swap, and are a great upgrade. It is not an upgrade that needs to be done right away, but I would advise all owners of this reel to do it sooner or later.

If you are an angler that changes lures a lot and you don't want to mess with settings on your baitcaster every time you change then this is the reel for you. Take a little time to get it set up and then don't mess with it. I go from 1/4oz baits to 1/2oz and never mess with anything. Just tie on the new lire and cast!!!! Absolutely love these reels!!

If you are an angler that changes lures a lot and you don't want to mess with settings on your baitcaster every time you change then this is the reel for you. Take a little time to get it set up and then don't mess with it. I go from 1/4oz baits to 1/2oz and never mess with anything. Just tie on the new lire and cast!!!! Absolutely love these reels!!

Love this reel. And at under $200 with DC tech, it's a win. I went from a Curado to this and while the Curado is also an incredible reel, this suits my needs a lot better. I use this as an all-around on a medium Ugly Stick GX2. It's currently my favorite setup for general fishing from worms and 1 oz sinkers on the bottom, to 1/4 oz spinners and everything in between. With a 1 oz sinker and 12 pound mono or 40 pound braid, you can literally throw this thing all the way to the knot on your spool. You can BOMB this thing a mile. It is also VERY forgiving for beginners and when casting into wind, etc. You can absolutely still birdnest it if you don't know what you're doing but I spend way more time fishing and way less time untangling nightmares and buying line. Buy it, you won't regret it.

Got my girl friend to try it out. She has never fished with a bait caster but after about 5 cast, she was chunking it as far as me and no backlash. Except for the whine, an absolutely the best reel I have used in my 60 Yrs of chunking.
