Is this reel really good, average or bad around saltwater?

Answer: I've used it for fishing the flats in FL about a half dozen times. Not long enough for a complete evaluation but so far the reel has performed well. I recommend a light rinse with fresh water after using any reel in saltwater. If you spend twice or three times the money for a reel you gamble on getting that much more service for the extra expense. I think this reel will last pretty long if cared for and stored properly.

Answer: It is good as long as you rinse it off with fresh water after every use and keep it oiled and greased. I've had no issue with this reel in saltwater and I use it almost everyday.

Answer: I dont like braided line on my spinning reels but I use a line depending where I am fishing. I only use braided when I am fishing over 100ft deep. Otherwise I prefer mono or poly.

Answer: The GrimI1 4000 has max drag of 17.18 lbs. it is very precise, smooth and reliable. There is no “jerky” start up of the drag engaging.

Answer: I caught a 37 lb cat, the rod was medium heavy w 25lb braided line. I had no trouble, just had to take my time.

Answer: I have the 3000 model. I fish rivers and small streams. I fitted it with 6 lb. test which suits that kind of fishing. There are larger models that perhaps would be better suited to lake fishing. These are spinning reels that are suited to spinning rods. I assume that by lake rod you are referring to a more robust spinning rod & reel fitted with 8, 10 or greater lb. test which would no doubt require a larger Runcl Reel. Another amazing product, but I should have already expected it from Runcl. This reel is amazingly smooth and the drag works perfect. I’ve only had this reel for a week but have already put multiple carps and bass through it. If you want a great reel don’t sleep on these.

I got this reel going by the specs off of brand name reels double the price. I had to shine a couple production smudges but it was oiled and ready. Once you get the drag set where you want it, it's a great reel. Smooth and quiet. The drag though needs improvement. You can turn it a bunch and then it engages and goes to max drag quick. This will just be fun fishing reel but should great as that. Not sure if the clumsy drag could cost you that big one...

I've only been able to use it on a small lake so far and I'm anxious to get a larger rod to bring it up to Lake Texoma and put it through it's paces on some larger fish. It's a heck of a value!

Out of the box worked well. How ever was really disappointed the anti reverse didn’t work at all, and the drag system was becoming loose over a short period of time, every time I hooked into a fish the drag was way to loose then where I had it 5 minutes prior. Not to mention when the brake didn’t kick in my reel is going full reverse, instead of taking drag out. Unless there’s a way to fix it, 3/10 wouldn’t recommend to any fisherman. This just didn’t happen to 1 reel, this happened to 3 different reels. Disappointed

One of the best fishing reels, if not the best I've ever owned. Would highly recommend these products to my family and fishing friends. This is the second reel I've purchased from runcl. The first was the runcl 3000. And now the 5000, I use it relentlessly casting gotcha plugs pier fishing. Tied up with a king mackerel on the 3000 casting a gotcha plugs last fall. The fish looked like a 25 or 30 pound fish. When the fish realized it had a mouth full of treble hooks, it was game on! The drag system of this little reel is spectacular! I had it spooled with trilene big game mono 12 pound test. It was me, the 3000 runcl and that king mackerel for over ten minutes. The king made a ferocious high speed run, I tighted the drag on that little 3000 until I bought him to a stop. Turned him around and fought him all the way back to the pier. As it was, about 100 feet of the pier was destroyed during a hurricane. And just as I had fought my quarry almost within gaffing range he shot around the end of the pier, an area that was roped off and unreachable, he cut me off on the pilings. The crowd that had gathered groaned with disappointment as did I, that the huge king mackerel was all but beaten by by this tiny fishing reel. But as fishing goes, the big one always seems to get away. The moral of my big fish story is, buy runcl, you won't be disappointed! My new purchase of the 5000 runcl reel will be put to the test on some giant red drum very soon.

I am highly impressed with this reel. It has the look and feel of a reel that is much more expensive. First, not only is it super smooth, but it also has my #1 required feature with a instant stop anti-reverse for better hook setting. It looks elegant, and has a lot of line capacity. I debated between the 2000 and 3000, and am glad I went with the smaller 2000 for my primary needs with panfish, bass and walleye. It has a unique option that allows the reel handle to quickly fold for easy storage. I typically only use Shimano reels, but decided to branch out and try a new brand. I'm so glad I did. Highly recommended!!

Review update: I went to a sporting goods store to have line put on the reel. The man who was helping me looked at the reel, and said, "This is a sweet reel. Ten ball bearings!" He also liked the unique handle folding option. I mentioned that I got it on Amazon, and I think he may order one. I thought that spoke highly...a sporting goods store who sells and services a lot of different reels thought this reel was impressive.

Super smooth! Casts like a dream! The bail flips back down so easy. Has the guts to handle a 5# catfish like a champ. Hooked a 3.5 foot grass carp with it and got it to the boat twice before my hook straightened out!! I have it on a 5’6” light rod and love it!! My go to setup. For bass and now anything else. 20# Merced Braided by#RUNCL works great in it!!!

Worked pretty good for 3 outings. Then it just crapped out. The drag system no longer works and it goes in reverse at random times causing massive backlash. So to sum it up it lasted 3 1/2 fishing trips in a matter of 40 days. Wish I could return it. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS ITEM.

save your money for a quality rod or more tackle. I will buy a few more of these. I have had it out 6 or 7 times. If this reel holds up it is a diamond for the price of cubic zirconium. I have always bought man brand outdoor gear. I don't think you can find a better value in a spinning reel than this brand. You could pay 3 to 4 times more easily and not have any better performance as this reel offers. I have been fishing over 55 years and know a thing or 2.

Saw a guy on Tube with kayaks rave about this reel. I'm in same town, so I ordered one. Third time out, the bail spring is shot. Have to manually close bail every time after casting.

Maybe salt water? Mr. Kayak also was fishing in salt water. Washed it down second time out.

I do not dip my reels in the salt water, so should not be a problem.

Would not waste my money again.

I put 20lb braid on this reel and it was perfect for surf fishing. The reel hold probably 300+ feet of lines so the fish can run as much as they want. I was going after striped bass but ended up catching a huge 14” perch. The reel handled it well and felt smooth. The drag did not struggle either. I’m hopping to catch a big striper bass to put this baby to work.

I loaded this up with fluorocarbon line and took it out trout fishing. This reel did not disappoint. It was very smooth casting and the drag system is easy to adjust. I got several compliments on it and by the end of the trip was not shy at all about recommending it to my fishing buds. I am happy with this purchase and Runcl has once again produced a fine product. Do not hesitate to add this to your collection. I will be adding a larger version to take cat fishing this spring.

I purchased the 2000 series reel. Loved the way it looked and felt in my hand, very smooth overall. However, second trip I took it out I hooked into a smaller fish and the anti reverse completely broke on the reel. I continued to fish with it the rest of the day and caught many more fish, however it was a struggle when setting the hook due to the malfunction. Do not know if I received a faulty reel from the factory, but my confidence in this brand has been severely damaged.

Better than expected. I’ve been looking for a replacement 5000 reel for my surf 9foot pole. I was hesitant at first but after reading reviews I felt better about my purchase. After catching 30+ stripers, a couple string rays and sharks, and hella crab snaring, this reel has done magic. It reels smooth and even looks nice. But just like any other reel, if you use it in salt water or near sand, make sure to wash/clean after each use to extend the life. I’ve owned this reel for 5 months and used it for about 20-30 days, still holding up.

This might be a good freshwater reel, but I definably wasted my money for a saltwater reel. Two trips to the surf, and it's completely seized up. Wish I would've saved my money for a better one.

I bought it as a replacement for my first (cheap) reel and noticed the difference right away. Not only did it have a better anesthetic but it had a much faster retrieve. It also makes a clicking sound when you adjust the spool tension which helps me make more exact changes and is better at letting me know when something has bitten my hook.
I was a bit wary of the product bc I hadn’t heard of the brand before but I have no regrets! I’ve had it for a a couple months and still works like new.

I took a chance and bought the 3000 on a tight budget, and I am surprisingly pleased. It is well built and very smooth. It's light enough to cast all day and I'm looking forward to many more days of fishing with it.

I am really impressed so far. At least 3 trips to salt water and this reel holds up well. Smoothest retrieve you could ask for. Even the knob on the crank has ball bearings! I want this reel in a larger size for my surf rods!

This reel has been great so far. The packaging is very nice, the reel bag included is also a plus. Very smooth reel and the drag works like a dream. It made me realize some of my other reels really need a tuneup because this is so smooth. I got the 5000 because I fish for catfish a lot and wanted the larger size. landed 15 nice blue cats my first weekend using it with no issues at all. Casts great and no issues with the bail flipping unexpectedly. Great bang for your buck I would highly recommend adding this reel to your arsenal.

Good fishing reel. This one was a bit larger than what I needed for in land fishing so I would go down a size to fit a standard pole. Attaches and should works great.

An amazing reel for the price! Very well built, super smooth action and great drag. Comparable to my $200 Shimano reel but a little heavier. Love it!

Have to say I had low expectations for this reel but for the price I figured it was worth the gamble and I'm impressed. Feels great, put drag at max I couldn't rotate the spool by hand. Definitely worth a try see how it holds up long term.
