TubbyTony : Poor Internal Materials used in Reel...Product Failed.

I've owned this reel just over 1 year and it has suffered a catastrophic fail one month after the warranty period of 1 year. Looking at kastking's website it appears even if it were still under warranty I would have to pay $15 and ship the unit to them which would cost about $25 on my side so essentially there really is no warranty.

How it failed...While fighting a small carp about 20" I heard some crunching noises and the spool stopped moving up and down. I figured the reel just slipped it's gears somehow. Being like new, reel was used as part of a travel setup and only saw it's 3rd outing. Until the failure, I had no reason to take it apart.

So in effort to save the reel, I took it apart. What I found was surprising, the main gear which turns the gear that raises and lowers the spool failed and all teeth were broken off. (See Picture), this the product is unsavable. My conclusion is that this is 100% a materials defect, but I'm out of luck on this product.

Obviously I would not recommend kastking's products, this is not my only poor experience with kastking, I have purchased their line before and had defects mid spool. I'm so done with them. It seems they are really good at marketing junk.

I strongly do not recommend this reel. I will attempt to reach out to kastking to see if they sell parts for their reels or is willing to work with me to replace (credit towards a better reel, wouldn't want another brutus ever) and will update review.

First KastKing I bought (Centron Spinning Reel 3000) the line kept tangling up and getting eaten up by the reel. So I bought another cheapie of the same exact model I already had that has worked fine since day one just to be safe. That one the drag was defective so I thought, well maybe the first KastKing was too so took a chance on this one (Brutus Spinning Reel 4000) and I couldn't be happier. Nice and smooth, seems to be built good and solid, and I've had no problems with it whatsoever. I highly recommend.

I continue to get excited buying kastking reels! This one is the Kastking Brutus 2000. I found an old rod, Daiwa Apollo 4 1/2 ft ultralight. Kept it so I can leave it in my car for some spontaneous fishing when out and about.. where I live, there’s a lot of car break ins and I honestly got this reel because of the price, and also because kastking reels have been worth every penny for me! Time and time again! This one was $19, free rod, I figure if it gets stolen - whatever!
However, cheap price doesn’t mean cheap quality! This reel is smooth, feels solid and I can’t wait to go try it out! I’ll update later when I get some use out of it!

This reel is a great value. It is very good looking with black and grey base and scarlet red accents. The instant anti-reverse works well. It is very smooth. I bought it for saltwater and surf as well as occasional catfish fishing and it seems to hold up to these. I am happy with this 4000 series reel. The only wishes I have are that the reel handle is plastic (good quality sturdy plastic) but metal would likely be sturdier. Also I wish they had a 7000 or 8000 size series reel for saltwater. That said, the 4000 series Brutus reel is very sturdy and has a very good line capacity for its size. I will be buying more of these reels. I would highly reccomend, especially for the price!

It's been 1 year and 3 months since I have used this reel atleast once a week and I can definitively tell you I have a few issues with my Brutus reel.

1 - The plastic handle comes loose after several usage of the reel. I have to consistently tighten the knob to make sure the handle doesn't pop off (which has happened a few times already)

2 - The joint at the retrieve handle (where the 2 small plastic tabs are used to hold it in place) has sheared off. Perhaps this is the reason why my handle keeps coming loose. I've already tried using super glue, but I may have to use small screws to hold the joints in place.

3 - The bail gets stuck when I reel my line in. This doesn't happen all the time, but I'd say about 20% of the time I use the reel. Only way to resolve this is to twist the handle a little bit the other way, then resume normal retrieve.

Other than that, I think this reel is pretty decent for the price. I have caught 100+ bass with this reel without major issues; 7.5lb largemouth being the heaviest. If I had a second chance, I would definitely spend a little more money to get a higher tier reel from Kastking.

I bought this reel to take on a trip to Florida with me. Spooled it with 30lb kastking braid with some mono backing. I threw all kinds of lures with it, from heavy spinners to really light floating jerk baits, and even cut bait fished for gar. The reel is super smooth, really light, and it has lots of drag if needed. For the price, this seems like a seriously good value so far. Definitely see this being my main spinning setup for the warmer season here in MA where I’ll be targeting pike.

I guess it should get a 5 considering it is a $30 reel. It is far better than the Penn Wrath which I have. I bought this to go with an 11ft surf rod and it is well balanced and light. A little on the small size for a 5000. It has taken a dunk in the water and when I took it apart there was no water in the inner gears. Just the bale area. I am impressed. Problem is it has a small spindle. What pulled it in the water was hooking up with a good size jack crevalle. The reel struggled. At the 5000 size I didn't think it should have. but again it is a $30 reel. It is smooth when pulling in whiting. Also one other problem was this reel was not easy to disassemble but maybe that is what kept the water out of the gears. Great kids reel. Note: the bale area that got wet was easy to disassemble and service. Maybe I shoukd have given it 5 stars.

Its not even about this beeing a good bang for your buck. This is just a great reel because it is all around fresh water hands down for any rod . I own a baitrrunner 5000 and have it paired with a Daiwa Beef Stick because of its drag power . Thankyou cast king

Bert : Durable, but bail is awkward

I bought this reel and used it on a week-long fishing trip in Canada, as I needed a reel for a new rod recently acquired. I was a bit leery given the low price and off-brand name, but decided to give a try based on positive reviews. Over a week of fishing I found it smooth, lightweight, and reliable. My only complaint is that the bail was a bit awkward and required some change in my technique. Many reels have a forefinger-activated bail trigger that allows flipping the bail and grasping the line against rod in one easy motion. The KastKing lacks the bail flipper, such that you have to grab the line with your right forefinger, then flip the bail with your left hand (or reverse if you have it set up for left-handed use). I found this motion awkward at first, and fouled the line a few times while getting used to it. In addition, on many reels the bail easily releases when one begins to reel. On the KastKing, the bail released easily only when the tension is dialed fairly low.

I bought this reel because I purchase another KastKing reel previously. That 1 performed outstanding! I just received this one a week ago and fished it 3 days ago. Worked great and it should, it's new. Lightweight, casts great, reels in fish, drag works, operates like new reel. I recommend it. Any new reel I have bought has worked great for years. The thing about these reels is, I paid only $20 a piece for them.

This reel is amazing for the price. Have this setup on my 6ft 6in medium action rod spooled up with 10lb braid. Awesome for cranking and jiggin and hitting the creeks. Drag is legit as well, fighting 10-20lb carp / sheephead with no problem

Man am I glad I made the purchase! This Brutus reel is amazing! It's super smooth and feather light for the size. And BONUS it matches my rod! So happy with it. Highly recommend.

After spending a day on the water with it, I have to sadly downgrade this item. After the cast the bail sticks when you try to turn the crank to close it. It is now sitting in my junk drawer. Back my cheap Zebco that works flawlessly.
