I wasn’t aware of that when I bought mine, but it’s not a deal breaker for me, it’s a nice reel. But I don’t call it a brake (it’s an anti-reverse switch). You’re not asking about a baitcasting reel, are you? Most of them have magnetic brakes.

Answer: I own a 500 series Vanford. While at 240 it's not a cheap reel, but this a great reel. Light weight and smooth. I used the reel for inland salt water bass and never once second guessed the cost. Shimano products are not generally discounted.

Answer: It designed for fresh water,If you do saltwater with vanford, do light clear evertime after using it. Do not drop it into the saltwater.

Answer: I own the 2000hgf so I am not quite sure about the 1000. It is less a bit expensive but for me the 2000 with it's higher line capacity, 6.1 gears, faster retrieve rate, and same max drag (7lbs) made more sense. It is odd how both weigh in at exactly the same weight (5.3oz). As far as which would be more appropriate for bass fishing, I would say either would work well but the extra line capacity on the 2000hgf gives me the option of letting a larger fish run further. I hope that helps...
Answer: absolutely, I use a my vanford 1000 for kayak bass fishing with 4 lb test mono. I've caught bass in the 2.5 to 3.5 range with a Kencoe UL rod with no problems.

It replaces the popular Stradic Ci4+. The Vanford is a light weight reel designed for repetitive casting of lighter top water or swimming baits. It has effortless rotor initiation making it very easy to start the retrieve.
Answer: Shimano doesn’t outright say it’s for saltwater but says it’s can be used on “the flats”. I would hesitant to use it as a strictly saltwater reel unless you throughly rinse it after every use.

I have the 2000 and the drag is not lacking in performance.

Answer: Do not believe Shimano’s data concerning Vanford’s Power Pro line capacity. Neither my 2000 or 2500 hold as much as they say. Wish I could give you my real numbers, but I have forgotten them now. I did send email to shimano criticizing the accuracy of their data. Even tightly spooled line to 1/16” of the edge is less than they say. Wish I could give you an estimate in % form. If I had to guess, I’d say 15-20% less, so instead 100 yds, 80-85 yds. But don’t hold me to that. With mono or fluorocarbon, I have no experience.

Answer: Just like it shows in the picture. Be aware that the 5000 is IDENTICAL to the 4000 except for the handle. What I mean is that the line reel for the 5000 are the exact same dimensions is the same as the 4000. The 5000 will NOT hold more line than the 4000 for the same line weight.
