Answer: Yes sir
Q:
What size reel would be best to put on a 7'6" penn battalion m/h fast action rod and would balance out pretty good?
Answer: I’d probably go with the 4000… have several of these reels in different sizes (for 11’ surf fishing to 7’6” regular rods)… I’d think anything bigger than that would be disproportionately weighted.
Answer: I would put a 4000 on it but the 3000 will be fine.
Answer: It depends on what you’re using it for.
Q:
Can I use the 4000 for crab snaring?
Answer: depending on your rod. I use 8' and 10' surf rods (medium heavy saltwater) with 8000 series seems perfect. If you only have lighter or shorter rod I will still recommend 6000 or 7000 in order to reel in crab(s) on a snare. 4000 is too light for that.
Answer: That pretty light for crab snares . They are heavy

Product reviews of Penn Pursuit III & Pursuit IV Spinning Fishing Reel
Todd : Great reel! Performs as a dependable reel should!
Fishing reels are a dime a dozen! There are some you should avoid because if the hit and miss theory. This reel works great and has withstood redfish and snook. I recommend for anyone even the big sponsored fisherman! I’ve been fishing since I was right years old! I’m now fifty eight and I’ve learned a thing or two about products! Don’t just buy a name! This reel is very well recommended!
E.T. : Better reels out there for the price
I bought two of these based on price and the brand. I have some Fierce II’s on heavier set ups and have been very pleased so I figured I‘d give these a try on some cheaper and lighter rods. One has been working fine, as expected. The other, not so much... the bail repeatedly closed while casting, sending my entire rig soaring into the lake. After the third time yesterday I let go of it in frustration. The 4 ft drop onto the dock bent the bail not allowing proper function anymore, which was both surprising and welcome due to all the lost tackle and retying this reel has brought me. Maybe this one is a lemon. The drag seems sufficient for a reel this size and I like that you can tie braid directly to the spool, but wish it had a reverse feature. I get that’s it’s only $40 but my $30-$45 shimano’s perform better and I’ve never had a bail slam shut mid cast.
Earl Leonard Simmins : How did sand get in a new reel ?
Ordered before vacation and was here when l got home. l always considered Penn some of the best gear. Seems like a lot of real for the money, smooth as a baby's butt. l spooled it up with some 16' lb. test mono. While showing a friend we took off the spool and was shocked to find a small amount of sand inside, l don't know how it got there, maybe l got a used reel. l hear no grinding or see damage so l plan on keeping it and hope to some day catch a big enough fish to challenge both me and the reel
Andrew : Best reel for the money.
I love this reel, it's super durable and well made. I like it better than my Penn Battle 2 that costs twice as much. These new 3rd gen. Penn reels seem to be better than the 2nd generation. Now that this one has the HT-100 drag system, there is no point in upgrading to a Penn battle 2 if you're on a budget. I use mine for big stripers and king salmon.
Eric Lee : Drag sucks and so does reeling
So, what I know from this is that the center is composite and swells up. It is very difficult to put on and take off the reel. Not only that but the drag itself is very hard to pull and doesn't work. I bought reel grease to lube up the drag washers until I realized that the metal center didn't even fit properly in. If you're new to spinning reels, don't buy this reel. You'll have a hard time if you get a problem like this.
I found the solution which is to sand paper the metal center until it is small enough to fit your spool on easily. What a pain.
Not only that but reeling became such a hassle. Went deep sea fishing and made me out of breath after one reel session. Either I got a REALLY bad reel or this is just standard. I'm a young and fit angler and I'm telling you that this reel is absolute garbage.
I found a solution which is to shave off the metal rod in the middle with sand paper which is ridiculous.
John C. : Perfect for saltwater bank fishing for Redfish/Flounder/Black Drum.
I use 20lb test braid line and a 6 1/2' spinning rod. We have caught numerous Flounder up to 20", 28" Redfish and 30"-42" black drum. Casts as far as you want and super smooth reeling. Feels alittle on the heavy side, but I'm used to using ultralight setups. Drag adjustment is great and easy to adjust while fighting the fish. I bought this model after going on a guided bay fishing trip, where the captain only used penn pursuit III reels. Can't find any reels less than 100$ that have this quality. Freshwater rinse after every saltwater use and the reel feels brand new after many uses. I will buy more when my other reels get worn out.
shawn oshea : It's a great reel!
Bought 6 and paired with berrypro surf rods. Great surf set up for about $130 each that I will no doubt hand down to my son. For the money you can't beat these. Highly recommend
PickyKnifeMan : I now own like 5 of these Pursuit 3 of different sizes......the BEST
What an amazing reel for the money....so easy to clean, open up and service, beautiful drag...well balanced.....one of the best reels for the money....let's you buy multiple reels with multiple sizes for your arsenal.
Jack W. : Will not be disappointed
I now have 6 of these reels.. 2 x 4000 2x 3000 and 2 x 2500 and I must say that these reels hold up against anything.. including when I ran over it by accident one time. I really really recommend these reels
Henry : Great Value! Nice build. HT 100 Drags !!
2500 size used for trout fishing to light saltwater pier fishing. Very good build. Ready for braided line. Very smooth and strong excellent carbontex drags greased from the factory. Great value for a newbie to an experienced fisherman. Very easy to service. Strongly recommend this real to my friends that are getting started.
Devin : It's worth it.
Caught this little gem on a lightning deal and couldn't be happier. Put some line on it and went to the lake the next weekend, and didn't want to put down. Best spinner I've owned in 25 years, and probably won't buy anything else from now on. Came with multiple bushings to get your line the right placement on the spool. Spool also has a rubber ring in the middle to grip the line so it doesn't slip. I've had that happen with some braid after it gets wet, but not with this. Cast great then retrieves fast, and smooth. Great buy!
La Aluminati : 5000
Reel feels really good. Super smooth nice look and good drag. Landed some small Dorado on it. It actually has a pretty tight drag no matter how much you loosen the spool. I took the reel apart to check for any binding issues, but the design of the spindle and its mounting seat just have a really snug fit which has a lot of drag. Great reel for the price and easy to service.

shawn oshea : Great reel just do it
Paired these (bought 2) with berrypro surf rods (also an excellent product) and have 2 really nice surf rods for about $120 each. cant beat that with a stick. Now have purchased 6 of these, handles Pompano and 24 inch black drum in the surf all day long with ease. Just fantastic for the price.
LEIBNIZ-TEURY DEL CARMEN : Noise not strength.
Light weight. Noise, not strong material. Took care of it washed with fresh water most of the time, used it during summer time for bate casting for porgies, and winterize it since I live where winter is cold and still end up not working after almost 2 year, when other reel that I have from the same brand for heavy fishing still like new. I won't buy it at all.
Bishop : This reel deserves and earns each one of those 5 stars
You won’t find a better reel for this price range. from it’s drag smoothness and power to reel quality and durability this is one of my fav reels I spun nothing super fancy about it but its a solid solid performer. penn pursuit 2 was good and the 3 is even better much better and stronger drag
Jaycode415 : Bang for your buck!
You can’t go wrong with the penn pursuit 3. Strong and light weight. Great starter reel, great go to reel! The price for this reel speaks nothing to its actual value.. gonna buy some more because sis took the two I bought lol and she loves them!
Robert Johnson : Value
This real is a great value for money. It is for beginners And every 1 to use. It is light weight and easy to throw out
Trevor B : Great brand great gear
Im sure most experienced fishers know about Penn, but its a great product. You get what you pay for, and Penn isnt exactly cheap, but for what you're getting, its amazing. I got the 3000 series, which is a little bulkier, but I need it to be. I surf fish so I need it to be able to handle big fish, which is the only reason I didnt give it 5 stars on weight. Its the only 3000 series I own, so I dont know how lightweight it is compared to other brands, but its got some weight to it. Its not a problem at all though, considering the lightest weight I use on the line is 5oz, plus 20lb braided line, and multiple pieces of bait. You cant go wrong with Penn if you want to pay for it. If you are just getting in to fishing, I STRONGLY reccommend checking out Cadence brand. Theyre newer and far cheaper, and so far in my experience along with a lot of other reviews, you're getting the same quality as Penn and Shimano but for a fraction of the cost. Worst case scenario you are getting yourself some gear that is very inexpensive and it only lasts you a few months to a year. So far I havent heard anyone say theirs wont hold up, so its sure to last longer. They even have an amazing warranty department if you have issues.
PickyKnifeMan : Buying my 4th one.......
What an absolute steal for $36....well built 4000 model......perfect for Florida Keys fishing......I've now bought a 2500, 3000 and 2 4000's. They have replaced a Daiwa Regal Z and 2 Penn 4400ss from 20 years ago. These are so easy to maintain, built solid, no silly bells and whistles to break, difficult to rust with basic maintenance, smooth drag and plenty of it....and very quiet. The whole purpose of the lack of an antireverse switch is to eliminate one more hole for water to ingress....smart move....few use the backwards function provided. Stock up now.....you'll miss this give away price.
Hlaks : I bought 2 of these... both broke
This is suppose to be an excellent reel. I bought two of these in hopes that they would be somewhat comparable to my fierce reel which has served me well. Both reels had issues with the spool coming on and off. Each spool got stuck and had trouble coming off. I was giving each reel plenty of oil never the less I had to muscle those spools off. It seemed almost impossible to but it back together. My fierce reel has always been excellent. I plan to stick to the fierce Penn line after these bad experiences.
SEMC : I love Penn
I am biased when it comes to Penn reels. I have always preferred them over others. After a couple months of use I don't have any complaints. Smooth and no backlash.
maloney b. alfons : 5 star product
This reel is totally excellent. This is my second size 8000. I paired it with an elite ugly stik for trolling and it is the best combination that I have in my arsenal. Thank you PENN.
John Fessler : 8000 is a very large reel
Have a 5000 version of this reel was looking to upgrade another rod read specs figured let’s get the biggest and baddest so I ordered the 8000 well it arrives and I must let y’all know unless you plan on fishing for 100# plus fish don’t buy this one it is a very large reel made for fishing large game fish my mistake I will keep for when I go out in gulf fishing but really wanted it for local catfishing so I ordered the 3000 and 6000 love penn reels won’t buy any other
Brandon Dethrow : High hopes from this 1
Another great product from Penn. The reel power knob is a good bonus. For some reason the pursuit performs better than the other penn model reels for me. Can't wait to put the pursuit IV on the water
Inframan : The best budget saltwater reels I have found
I had a couple of the 2 series Penn reels, the 3 series is even better. All except the bottom of the line have upgraded carbon fiber drags and a rubber gasket on the spool to stop line slippage. These reels are durable and will last a while in salt water conditions if you take proper care of them. You can go up the line with the Fierce, Battle, etc and get more bearings and more advanced component materials but I can find no fault with Pursuit. Great intro reel for weekend warriors or anyone that needs a saltwater reel that won't break the bank.
K. Darling : Really great reel for the price
Super happy with this reel. Really great for the price. Feels durable, light enough to use all day. I plan to buy more of these when needed.
David Crawford : Great value for a great reel
While I haven’t had the chance to fish with this reel yet, it feels great on the rod that I put it on. The action is very smooth and the weight is one you can carry and fish with all day. Can’t wait for my beach trip in May to use this reel.
leo : Great value for money enough of those cheap Walmart reels
This reel is exceptional it’s light weight and easy to use and cast really well. I rinse my reels off after surf fishing the the stainless steel bearing help keep it running smooth but don’t get it wet their not sealed bearings but great reel for the money better to invest in a reel that will last a lifetime than those cheap 20 reels from Walmart that would always break on me ps the J braid x4 I’m using sucked go for J braid X8 or Yo zuri
TheBeardedBeard : Comes out of the box properly lubed!
I used this reel for surf fishing. It performed very well, and came out of the box with proper lubrication. You don’t get that with some of the less expensive reels. It feels solid and well made! I believe with proper care, it will last for many years to come. It casted well, and the drag worked well. I had no issues with this reel, just solid performance!

prjc18 : For the price you’ll be amazed!
Wow super pleased with these reels. I bought the 3000 a few weeks ago and I’m amazed at how solid and smooth these are! I ordered the wife a 2500 because I was so impressed. I use the 3000 on a medium action 6.6 rod for fresh water fishing. I’ve pulled in a few large mouth bass and pickerel with ease! I would imagine trout wouldn’t be much fun as I would have the thing skipping along the top of the water. We fish a lot and with a lot of people who spend $$$$$ and I can honestly say for 30-50 buck these are pretty amazing!
leo : Great value for money enough of those cheap Walmart reels

Raffi : Best reel I own, great quality, great value
Top notch reel, great quality, soft of the wallet at $40 - tops any of the other reels I have, which are mostly novice level reels (Shakespear, KastKing, Okuma, Abu Garcia). The action is smooth, the bail is solid, the spool has a large capacity, the drag is firm and sensitive adjustment settings. The width of the bail and spool are large at like 4"? I bought the 4000 model - I actually didn't have a rod with a large enough guide ring to accommodate this - the line would rub wildly around the lower guide as I cast and retrieve. Lesson learned - this is a heavy duty reel for a large (7'+?) Rod that is medium heavy to heavy action. By the way its a heavy reel at about 14oz?.. glad I bought it, now I just gotta get it matched right.
Glenn P. : Durable. Comparable to stradic!!
That's all I use on my kayak anymore. They're 40 bucks and they're very reliable. Just spray them off lightly when done. I had one submerged for a couple minutes because it fell off my kayak while I was fighting this red. I thought it was going to be done before. Works perfect. I catch snook ,trout and reddrum on the 2500 All the time. Even got a 25 lb tarpon on it last year. I like how light it is because I throw lures a lot.
Adam coleman : Best budget spinning real in existence
I bought my first pursuit III used at a pawn shop and let me tell you it was the best fishing gear purchase I’ve ever made.
To date this reel has put about 400lbs of redfish and drum on the bank or in the boat. It’s a tank. The drag is really really good and easy to adjust with a nice mechanical clicker. The bale feels solid and the action is very very smooth. This reel isn’t on par with reels well into the $150-200 range.
It’s light weight and durable. I’ve got several
Shimano spinning reels but I find myself interested going back to this reel for all my inshore salt and fresh water fishing.
12/10 overall.
Christy : Great reel!
Great reel for salt water or fresh. Holds up well, very smooth. We do a lot of traveling to the islands for fishing and these have worked well for us. Small enough to pack and strong enough for big fish. And, you cannot go wrong with Penn reels!
DTIC : Excelente Reel 5 estrellas
Me gusta mucho este reel, es liviano, fuerte, ya que hago rockfishing y ha aguantado fuertes golpes y raspaduras. Este pargo fue trabajado sin problema, tenía linea braid 120 y caña de 40 libras.
Jessica Leete : Best spinning reel I own now!
5 stars all the way! I bought the 3000 model and I couldn’t be happier. Built very solid, super smooth reel and I LOVE the rubber grip on the spool to hold the line and prevent any slipping. Undeniable value for the money. These will be the only spinning reels I buy from now on.
David Crawford : Great value for a great reel
While I haven’t had the chance to fish with this reel yet, it feels great on the rod that I put it on. The action is very smooth and the weight is one you can carry and fish with all day. Can’t wait for my beach trip in May to use this reel.
Dave : Nice Penn reel!
Very nice fishing reel this far! I’ve used on multiple surf fishing outings and it is smooth and easy to clean. I bought two more... I looked at a bunch and researched quite a few and glad I got these, as they’re very good value compared to higher price options I was considering
shawn oshea : Great reel just do it
Paired these (bought 2) with berrypro surf rods (also an excellent product) and have 2 really nice surf rods for about $120 each. cant beat that with a stick. Now have purchased 6 of these, handles Pompano and 24 inch black drum in the surf all day long with ease. Just fantastic for the price.
Luckycraftdave : Top quality, reasonable price
If you’re targeting bass size fish or higher, this reel is perfect for a 8+ft rod. I use it on my surf fishing rod with good success, and it’s good for jetties too.
Dale : Drag is a drag....
This is a really good and serves its purpose for an absolutely entry level Penn. This reel is incredibly smooth and, for the last year, has held up well in salt water rivers. I use it roughly once a week and have found it has almost no drag abilities. If you fishing smaller fish and use heavier line, you’ll be fine. I’ve slowly made my way up the scale of Penn reels and probably will not go any lower than a Fierce II. The Fierce II is by far the best for the money. Hope this helps. Good luck!
tomnchrist : BIG Reel! & sooo... smooth!
I could not beat this price anywhere else. Big Stout Reel with smooth action and great carbon disc drag. Cast easily and far with 50lb Braid. Fits well on my 13' 'Thunder' Surf Rod. Super Fast shipping, even without Prime.
James Picata : Smooth Operation
Bought this to replace a reel that broke on a $35 combo set.
The difference between a ~$40 reel and the reel on a $35 combo set is immediately noticeable.
Smooth operation.
I'll buy another should I need to replace a reel.
Suresh S. : Good quality reel
Great reel. Put some 50 lb braid on a 6000 and it worked well. This reel and the penn Wrath are great for beginners because they r on the cheaper side and because they are Penn they last a while. U can find this reel cheaper elsewhere but nonetheless still a great reel
