What size reel would be best to put on a 7'6" penn battalion m/h fast action rod and would balance out pretty good?
Answer: I’d probably go with the 4000… have several of these reels in different sizes (for 11’ surf fishing to 7’6” regular rods)… I’d think anything bigger than that would be disproportionately weighted.

Answer: It depends on what you’re using it for.
Q:
Can I use the 4000 for crab snaring?
Answer: depending on your rod. I use 8' and 10' surf rods (medium heavy saltwater) with 8000 series seems perfect. If you only have lighter or shorter rod I will still recommend 6000 or 7000 in order to reel in crab(s) on a snare. 4000 is too light for that.

Product reviews of Penn Pursuit III & Pursuit IV Spinning Fishing Reel
Jack W. : Will not be disappointed
I now have 6 of these reels.. 2 x 4000 2x 3000 and 2 x 2500 and I must say that these reels hold up against anything.. including when I ran over it by accident one time. I really really recommend these reels

Philly Johnny : Pursuit III is louder than my Pursuit II's
I just received the Pursuit III 2500 and it's like I can feel the gears inter-mingling inside the reel. I have a Pursuit II 3000 and Pursuit II 4000 and they are incredibly smooth - zero noise at all. I wonder if anyone else is experiencing the same.
Amazon Customer : Penn Pursuit III 4000
Nice reel at a good price. Spooled it with 12 lb Sufix Superior and paired with an Okuma Nomad Express MH. The HT-100 drag was very smooth. Very fine adjustments with the drag knob. I caught the pair of cero mackerel in the photo with this setup and handled it easily.
Zero complaints. I would definitely buy again.
A.S : Nice A++
Nice and Smooth..Fish on!
Dante G. : Strong, durable, well worth it.
Great reel for the money. I still have the older version and have used it for years, continue to do so. The III version is great, pretty smooth drag, and durable. I expect a decade of service out of it. If you are on a budget, GET THIS REEL. You can’t go wrong.
PickyKnifeMan : Buying my 4th one.......
What an absolute steal for $36....well built 4000 model......perfect for Florida Keys fishing......I've now bought a 2500, 3000 and 2 4000's. They have replaced a Daiwa Regal Z and 2 Penn 4400ss from 20 years ago. These are so easy to maintain, built solid, no silly bells and whistles to break, difficult to rust with basic maintenance, smooth drag and plenty of it....and very quiet. The whole purpose of the lack of an antireverse switch is to eliminate one more hole for water to ingress....smart move....few use the backwards function provided. Stock up now.....you'll miss this give away price.
London : Really big reel 8000 clam
I purchased the 8000 one that says clam, yes clam is just the package it comes in. I also purchased the non clam which come in a box the same papers in each. I love this reel, it’s huge. I was afraid it wasn’t gone seem like a big saltwater reel and I was wrong. This this is everything, daintily buying another.
Yashua201 : Installed and loaded, will update after I've caught some fish on it ????
I received this product a couple days ago and just opened it today and installed it. After filling with line, it seems to real really smooth. The 4000 was probably a bit bigger than I needed but is definitely not the weak link anymore when it comes to catch fish. I like the rubber inset on the spool to help hold the line, doesn't matter if it's mono or nano it's going to hold! I fish quite a bit typically throughout the year, headed out for some spring walleye shortly ☺️ I'll update after I've got a few more miles of line through it!

Susan n. : Came with stem broken
Product came broken, I have read many great reviews and have been waiting for the product to arrive as a birthday gift for my boyfriend.
Product came boxed( not clamshell packaging). The stem that gets mounted to the rod was broken into three pieces. Hand to send back and am currently waiting for processing.
The reel itself looked great ,and was smooth when reeling but seeing the condition it arrived in makes me worry about the integrity of the reel.
Hlaks : I bought 2 of these... both broke
This is suppose to be an excellent reel. I bought two of these in hopes that they would be somewhat comparable to my fierce reel which has served me well. Both reels had issues with the spool coming on and off. Each spool got stuck and had trouble coming off. I was giving each reel plenty of oil never the less I had to muscle those spools off. It seemed almost impossible to but it back together. My fierce reel has always been excellent. I plan to stick to the fierce Penn line after these bad experiences.
PickyKnifeMan : I now own like 5 of these Pursuit 3 of different sizes......the BEST
What an amazing reel for the money....so easy to clean, open up and service, beautiful drag...well balanced.....one of the best reels for the money....let's you buy multiple reels with multiple sizes for your arsenal.
leo : Great value for money enough of those cheap Walmart reels
This reel is exceptional it’s light weight and easy to use and cast really well. I rinse my reels off after surf fishing the the stainless steel bearing help keep it running smooth but don’t get it wet their not sealed bearings but great reel for the money better to invest in a reel that will last a lifetime than those cheap 20 reels from Walmart that would always break on me ps the J braid x4 I’m using sucked go for J braid X8 or Yo zuri

Adam coleman : Best budget spinning real in existence
I bought my first pursuit III used at a pawn shop and let me tell you it was the best fishing gear purchase I’ve ever made.
To date this reel has put about 400lbs of redfish and drum on the bank or in the boat. It’s a tank. The drag is really really good and easy to adjust with a nice mechanical clicker. The bale feels solid and the action is very very smooth. This reel isn’t on par with reels well into the $150-200 range.
It’s light weight and durable. I’ve got several
Shimano spinning reels but I find myself interested going back to this reel for all my inshore salt and fresh water fishing.
12/10 overall.
Brandon Dethrow : High hopes from this 1
Another great product from Penn. The reel power knob is a good bonus. For some reason the pursuit performs better than the other penn model reels for me. Can't wait to put the pursuit IV on the water
Dante G. : Strong, durable, well worth it.

Ricky Murphy : Great reel and price affordable
I have several of these reels in different sizes and this one is just as good as the others. Been to the surf fishing with it several times and it works prefectly. Love the anit-reverse system and drag, holds plenty of line in a varity of sizes and bail works as it should. If you are looking for a very affortable entry level reel that is dependable and will last you this is the reel for you.
LEIBNIZ-TEURY DEL CARMEN : Noise not strength.
Light weight. Noise, not strong material. Took care of it washed with fresh water most of the time, used it during summer time for bate casting for porgies, and winterize it since I live where winter is cold and still end up not working after almost 2 year, when other reel that I have from the same brand for heavy fishing still like new. I won't buy it at all.

Cali Brewer : It's a winner for sure
Solid reel, took it out deep sea fishing and win the jackpot in the first run.
Fresno Family : Absolutely can't tell the difference between Pursuit 3, Fierce 3 or Battle 3 blind folded...
Has held up to a few fishing trips, definitely robust and has a great action. Little on the heavy side for a 2500 size reel but I will definitely get a few years out of it.
I would buy this for kids/drunk adults. Just enough reel to last but not to expensive to get dropped on a rock.
Bought a Fierce 3 just a week ago because I needed another reel asap and Pursuit 3 were out of stock locally. Would much rather have save $30 and got the pursuit!
Ilex Opaca : Excellent - Smoother than my Shimano Sahara
This reel is super smooth and has excellent mojo! I bought the 2500. The sizing is traditional - in other words, it's exactly the size you would expect it to be if you've been fishing for 30 years. Hat's off to Penn.
David Crawford : Great value for a great reel
While I haven’t had the chance to fish with this reel yet, it feels great on the rod that I put it on. The action is very smooth and the weight is one you can carry and fish with all day. Can’t wait for my beach trip in May to use this reel.
K. Darling : Really great reel for the price
Super happy with this reel. Really great for the price. Feels durable, light enough to use all day. I plan to buy more of these when needed.
JL : Great spinning reel!
I think this has been the best spinning reel for under $50 I have ever bought. Loved it so much I bought a 2nd one. It's casting is so smooth and great for a long cast. Feels well made and sturdy not cheap made. This is the 1st Penn I have ever used. I have one on a 7' medium rod with braid and the other is a 6' medium with mono. Great for pond fishing or lake. Zero issues out of either reel. I'm going to buy a couple more for my kids.
Jp Martin : Nice drag system
I took it crappie fishing, caught a largemouth bass that was ten plus pounds. I snapped a few pictures, unfortunately I wasn’t able to weigh it as I was in my kayak.. The drag system worked flawlessly, with 8lb test line.
Amazon Customer : It's a Penn. Wise Investment so far. Not many reels in same size will beat it ????????????.
What I like most is total price $38.55 each ????, got 2 reels????. Dislike Penn Pursuit 3 4000 Model no Protection plan ????. Drag button, have to turn a lot more to adjust ????. Time will tell if it's a good reel. Penn are normally tough reels ????. Good so far for Drum and Sheephead ????. Holds around 230 yards of 30 lb. Braid ????.
Terence : Solid Reel Great Drag
Great reel for the money. Bought this for my nephew to pair up with a Ugly Stick Elite. Best combo for young kids to start their fishing hobby. This reel is durable with a high-end drag system. It’s durable and can hold up to my 11yr old nephew. Great buy!
Joanna W. : Silky smooth
Feels good, great ergonomics. Can't tell the difference between this reel and my Penn Battle.
JU : 6000 Doesn't come close to it's 50LB braid capacity rating
I don't know if it's the Penn Pursuit III 6000 Spinning Reel or the Kastking 50LB braid I used but the reel claims to hold 342 yards of 50LB braid but actually filled up at over 100 yards less with it wound very tight. This is the braid I used https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EFQZHVG
Update: I mounted my second one of these reels today and chose a 300yd spool of 50 lb Power Pro brand Spectra braid thinking it may have a smaller diameter than the kastking. Tied directly to the spool same as my first one I wound it on as tightly as I could and got the full 300yds on it. That totally fills the spool so 300yds of 50 Lb braid is all you'll ever get on the 6000 size.
Suresh S. : Good quality reel
Great reel. Put some 50 lb braid on a 6000 and it worked well. This reel and the penn Wrath are great for beginners because they r on the cheaper side and because they are Penn they last a while. U can find this reel cheaper elsewhere but nonetheless still a great reel

Christy : Great reel!
Great reel for salt water or fresh. Holds up well, very smooth. We do a lot of traveling to the islands for fishing and these have worked well for us. Small enough to pack and strong enough for big fish. And, you cannot go wrong with Penn reels!
Yashua201 : Installed and loaded, will update after I've caught some fish on it ????

Jessica Leete : Best spinning reel I own now!
5 stars all the way! I bought the 3000 model and I couldn’t be happier. Built very solid, super smooth reel and I LOVE the rubber grip on the spool to hold the line and prevent any slipping. Undeniable value for the money. These will be the only spinning reels I buy from now on.
Robert Johnson : Value
This real is a great value for money. It is for beginners And every 1 to use. It is light weight and easy to throw out
JU : 6000 Doesn't come close to it's 50LB braid capacity rating
PrynceAl : The Fierce reels are sexy but Pursuit ain too bad
I am usually a Fierce 2 guy ut since the Fierce 3 is too damn much at this time I purchased the 2500 Pursuit 3 ....dont underestimate it I keep this one in my trunk on a 6'6" Uglystik GX2 ....caught countless sizeable or keeper fish since I had it now for a few months.
Henry : Great Value! Nice build. HT 100 Drags !!
2500 size used for trout fishing to light saltwater pier fishing. Very good build. Ready for braided line. Very smooth and strong excellent carbontex drags greased from the factory. Great value for a newbie to an experienced fisherman. Very easy to service. Strongly recommend this real to my friends that are getting started.
Roy : PENN FOR LIFE 'MERICA! - STRONG SLEEK SUITABLE for all conditions
Every size of this reel are awesome in their own right. You can go fresh artifical throws for bass , trout season as well if you're keen on the 2500 with 6 to 8 lb flouro ..I use my 4000 with 14lb flouro and my 3000 with 15 lb braid . Both the larger variety have handled salt for the past year no issues..probably about 50 trips in to give perspective . Still strong smooth. They feel well built too
Fresno Family : Absolutely can't tell the difference between Pursuit 3, Fierce 3 or Battle 3 blind folded...
Dante G. : Strong, durable, well worth it.
Great reel for the money. I still have the older version and have used it for years, continue to do so. The III version is great, pretty smooth drag, and durable. I expect a decade of service out of it. If you are on a budget, GET THIS REEL. You can’t go wrong.
guy : Bad drag, squeaks, not reliable. Just dont buy it.
This reel is just bad. Since it arrived the drag was not good at all, sure not smooth. I am very disappointed. I was really expecting for some good (not great) penn reel for the price. I ordered this one and picsifun flame. The flame just a-lot better in any parameter and cheaper. This penn reel start to squeak after 2 fishing days. I opened it and greased and nothing helped. After a more 6 fishing days it died. Not worth a penny. Save your money guys this reel is just not good. The picsifun flame still works great and i didnt lube it yet.
robert ramos : Great for what I use it forr
I’m just a penn lover and they never fail me. But I’m just a fresh water fisher. I use peen for those big cats great value and reel.
