Answer: Yes sir
Q:
What size reel would be best to put on a 7'6" penn battalion m/h fast action rod and would balance out pretty good?
Answer: I’d probably go with the 4000… have several of these reels in different sizes (for 11’ surf fishing to 7’6” regular rods)… I’d think anything bigger than that would be disproportionately weighted.
Answer: I would put a 4000 on it but the 3000 will be fine.
Answer: It depends on what you’re using it for.
Q:
Can I use the 4000 for crab snaring?
Answer: depending on your rod. I use 8' and 10' surf rods (medium heavy saltwater) with 8000 series seems perfect. If you only have lighter or shorter rod I will still recommend 6000 or 7000 in order to reel in crab(s) on a snare. 4000 is too light for that.

Product reviews of Penn Pursuit III & Pursuit IV Spinning Fishing Reel
Jaycode415 : Bang for your buck!
You can’t go wrong with the penn pursuit 3. Strong and light weight. Great starter reel, great go to reel! The price for this reel speaks nothing to its actual value.. gonna buy some more because sis took the two I bought lol and she loves them!
Glenn P. : Durable. Comparable to stradic!!
That's all I use on my kayak anymore. They're 40 bucks and they're very reliable. Just spray them off lightly when done. I had one submerged for a couple minutes because it fell off my kayak while I was fighting this red. I thought it was going to be done before. Works perfect. I catch snook ,trout and reddrum on the 2500 All the time. Even got a 25 lb tarpon on it last year. I like how light it is because I throw lures a lot.
Michael S. : Great reel, favorite by far!
Purchased the Pursuit III 6000 for pier fishing in the ocean. Have had tremendous luck with this reel. Dropped it about 4-5 times from various heights of 2 - 4ft and haven’t had a single malfunction or issue with performance. This reel may take a scratch or two but performance is solid regardless of drops. I use 25lb big game line which is the max rated mono this reel can handle and have had great success as the images I’ve uploaded can show. Probably around a 12lb jack was caught using this reel and a catfish ugly stik. The drag has never been fully locked down and has brought up about 10+ fish at this point without any problems. The biggest one I the picture it handled with ease. Honestly for the cost of this reel and ease of use compared to a bait caster or having to use a conventional reel and wind by hand this thing is much more efficient and can do it all. Casting distance is significantly farther then previous reels used such as the Quantum Optix and a plethora of baitcast reels. 5/5 would highly recommend. Do very little maintenance and have even forgot to lock down the drag while spraying this with water and it still performs flawlessly. Highly recommend pairing with an ugly stik.
P.S. for all the haters that said squid is for “newbies” this jack along with many other fish were caught solely on squid. Maybe don’t spread around one mans opinion and make it fact if you don’t know what you’re really talking about. Highly recommend this reel!
JU : 6000 Doesn't come close to it's 50LB braid capacity rating
I don't know if it's the Penn Pursuit III 6000 Spinning Reel or the Kastking 50LB braid I used but the reel claims to hold 342 yards of 50LB braid but actually filled up at over 100 yards less with it wound very tight. This is the braid I used https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EFQZHVG
Update: I mounted my second one of these reels today and chose a 300yd spool of 50 lb Power Pro brand Spectra braid thinking it may have a smaller diameter than the kastking. Tied directly to the spool same as my first one I wound it on as tightly as I could and got the full 300yds on it. That totally fills the spool so 300yds of 50 Lb braid is all you'll ever get on the 6000 size.
saburl : One of my favorites
I love this thing. I take it everywhere and use it often and it's still as smooth as the day I bought it. Take care of it, and it will take care of you.
vee99 : Great value!
I cannot believe I got this for under $40, I got two more, when I bring inexperience people fishing,
this is easy to handle and durable. I use it sometimes but why would I since I use the Battle ll
and conflict ll as my main arsenal. Pair this with a Tica 8-6" med-action spooled with 17 lb superline,
you can use this anywhere to land med to large size hard fighting fish lake or river.
Hella Tall : The best bang for your buck
The best reel for any fishing trip and the best bang for your buck I don’t use any other reel cause just the 4000 size can handle fish from bluegill to 30 plus inch stripers and I didn’t even break the bank very durable and casts like a dream
I like to buy stuff : Best spinner reel under $100. Go get yourself some!
Best bang for the buck spinner! I ise these 100% of the time in saltwater. Seems smoother and more solid than the old pursuit 2. I spooled this bad boy with 50lb powerpro and 20 lb flouro. Works like magic! Live bait or jigs, it can handle it all. Casts for miles and miles, very smooth!
Dont be fooled by the low price, this reel is a performer backed by the Penn name, you cant go wrong! I have many reels, conventional, baitcasters, spinners, and this is the one i grab first for any game fish under 40 lbs. Never a problem bringing 30 lb yellowtail on deck! Rockfish, barracuda, bonito, and bass have no chance either!
Trevor B : Great brand great gear
Im sure most experienced fishers know about Penn, but its a great product. You get what you pay for, and Penn isnt exactly cheap, but for what you're getting, its amazing. I got the 3000 series, which is a little bulkier, but I need it to be. I surf fish so I need it to be able to handle big fish, which is the only reason I didnt give it 5 stars on weight. Its the only 3000 series I own, so I dont know how lightweight it is compared to other brands, but its got some weight to it. Its not a problem at all though, considering the lightest weight I use on the line is 5oz, plus 20lb braided line, and multiple pieces of bait. You cant go wrong with Penn if you want to pay for it. If you are just getting in to fishing, I STRONGLY reccommend checking out Cadence brand. Theyre newer and far cheaper, and so far in my experience along with a lot of other reviews, you're getting the same quality as Penn and Shimano but for a fraction of the cost. Worst case scenario you are getting yourself some gear that is very inexpensive and it only lasts you a few months to a year. So far I havent heard anyone say theirs wont hold up, so its sure to last longer. They even have an amazing warranty department if you have issues.
Terence : Solid Reel Great Drag
Great reel for the money. Bought this for my nephew to pair up with a Ugly Stick Elite. Best combo for young kids to start their fishing hobby. This reel is durable with a high-end drag system. It’s durable and can hold up to my 11yr old nephew. Great buy!
Tom M : Sturdy, inexpensive reel
The Pursuit III (2500) is surprisingly good for the price. Smooth, rugged and reliable. I recently used a 2500 on a 7’ medium spinning rod for surf fishing the gulf, caught a bunch of 1-2 lb lady fish and a few 4-5 lb blues. The HT 100 drag is incredibly smooth. However, the gear box is not waterproof - accidentally dropped it in the surf and it took on a lot of saltwater, but it only took a couple minutes to flush and re-lube and it was good as new. Not as smooth or water resistant as a Clash, but you can buy several of these for what a Clash costs. This is great for kids/novices/occasional saltwater anglers, inexpensive and easy to maintain.
Luckycraftdave : Top quality, reasonable price
If you’re targeting bass size fish or higher, this reel is perfect for a 8+ft rod. I use it on my surf fishing rod with good success, and it’s good for jetties too.
Henry : Great Value! Nice build. HT 100 Drags !!
2500 size used for trout fishing to light saltwater pier fishing. Very good build. Ready for braided line. Very smooth and strong excellent carbontex drags greased from the factory. Great value for a newbie to an experienced fisherman. Very easy to service. Strongly recommend this real to my friends that are getting started.
Amazon Customer : Penn Pursuit III 4000
Nice reel at a good price. Spooled it with 12 lb Sufix Superior and paired with an Okuma Nomad Express MH. The HT-100 drag was very smooth. Very fine adjustments with the drag knob. I caught the pair of cero mackerel in the photo with this setup and handled it easily.
Zero complaints. I would definitely buy again.
Brett schaefer : Pen reel
Great reel for salt water and freshwater very dependable fishing reel priced for the average person who likes to fish without breaking the budget
TheBeardedBeard : Comes out of the box properly lubed!
I used this reel for surf fishing. It performed very well, and came out of the box with proper lubrication. You don’t get that with some of the less expensive reels. It feels solid and well made! I believe with proper care, it will last for many years to come. It casted well, and the drag worked well. I had no issues with this reel, just solid performance!
Gracie S : Personally best reel for the price
Thing is pretty bad arse for the price. Penn name doesn't leave anything to be desired with this reel. I see charter fishing boats using as their rentals so I knew they must be workhorses. I picked up the 4000 and 5000, big size difference between the two. I chose the 5000 as I figured it would be more versatile in targeted fish species and held more line as well. There is also a noticeable difference in weight as well, if your looking for a super lightweight set up, go with the 4000. I got the 5000 on an tiger ugly stick, wicked set up, slaying some big fish soon I hope. 300 yards of 50#braid
Yashua201 : Installed and loaded, will update after I've caught some fish on it ????
I received this product a couple days ago and just opened it today and installed it. After filling with line, it seems to real really smooth. The 4000 was probably a bit bigger than I needed but is definitely not the weak link anymore when it comes to catch fish. I like the rubber inset on the spool to help hold the line, doesn't matter if it's mono or nano it's going to hold! I fish quite a bit typically throughout the year, headed out for some spring walleye shortly ☺️ I'll update after I've got a few more miles of line through it!
shawn oshea : Great reel just do it
Paired these (bought 2) with berrypro surf rods (also an excellent product) and have 2 really nice surf rods for about $120 each. cant beat that with a stick. Now have purchased 6 of these, handles Pompano and 24 inch black drum in the surf all day long with ease. Just fantastic for the price.
Great buy!

cesar : great product
the reel very smooth and easy to handle. The drag has a lot fine adjustment and the drag is sealed from salt water. I recommend this real to those people that expect high performance than fresh water reels. i also like the non corrosive nature of the materials used so i expect to not see rusting parts in the future.

Great reel for salt water and freshwater very dependable fishing reel priced for the average person who likes to fish without breaking the budget
Suresh S. : Good quality reel
Great reel. Put some 50 lb braid on a 6000 and it worked well. This reel and the penn Wrath are great for beginners because they r on the cheaper side and because they are Penn they last a while. U can find this reel cheaper elsewhere but nonetheless still a great reel

Ilex Opaca : Excellent - Smoother than my Shimano Sahara
This reel is super smooth and has excellent mojo! I bought the 2500. The sizing is traditional - in other words, it's exactly the size you would expect it to be if you've been fishing for 30 years. Hat's off to Penn.
xesty : Amazing budget reel from Penn. Quality and smooth!
Only thing now is to see how this thing holds up. But for the price you cannot go wrong. Really have come to love Penn reels over the last few years.
DTIC : Excelente Reel 5 estrellas
Me gusta mucho este reel, es liviano, fuerte, ya que hago rockfishing y ha aguantado fuertes golpes y raspaduras. Este pargo fue trabajado sin problema, tenía linea braid 120 y caña de 40 libras.
tulip : Stupid design.
Received penn real today. Looks nice. Worked pretty good. But for some stupid reason there is a plastic piece on the bottom of the real just covering the fourth screw you remove to take it apart. The screw holding the plastic piece is very small. Mine was stripped and broken upon arrival. The only reason I can think of why they added this not necessary piece is they want it to break. I am very disappointed with penn. It is a decent real other than that plastic piece. You could remove it and fill the little hole and it would be fine but I shouldn't have to. If you buy this this plastic piece will most likely break or screw will strip at some point. The plastic piece is placed right where you may accidently bump or drop the real. But I guess that's how they get you to buy more.

Dave : Nice Penn reel!
Very nice fishing reel this far! I’ve used on multiple surf fishing outings and it is smooth and easy to clean. I bought two more... I looked at a bunch and researched quite a few and glad I got these, as they’re very good value compared to higher price options I was considering
robert ramos : Great for what I use it forr
I’m just a penn lover and they never fail me. But I’m just a fresh water fisher. I use peen for those big cats great value and reel.
London : Really big reel 8000 clam
I purchased the 8000 one that says clam, yes clam is just the package it comes in. I also purchased the non clam which come in a box the same papers in each. I love this reel, it’s huge. I was afraid it wasn’t gone seem like a big saltwater reel and I was wrong. This this is everything, daintily buying another.
Arthur R. : Add the test pound line
It was much bigger than I wanted but Amazon in there great wisdom gave a terrible description as a buyer I want to know what pound fishing line goes on the reel to determine the correct size I want

I was afraid it wasn’t gone seem like a big saltwater reel and I was wrong. This this is everything, daintily buying another.
leo : Great value for money enough of those cheap Walmart reels
This reel is exceptional it’s light weight and easy to use and cast really well. I rinse my reels off after surf fishing the the stainless steel bearing help keep it running smooth but don’t get it wet their not sealed bearings but great reel for the money better to invest in a reel that will last a lifetime than those cheap 20 reels from Walmart that would always break on me ps the J braid x4 I’m using sucked go for J braid X8 or Yo zuri
SEMC : I love Penn
I am biased when it comes to Penn reels. I have always preferred them over others. After a couple months of use I don't have any complaints. Smooth and no backlash.
Ricky Murphy : Great reel and price affordable
I have several of these reels in different sizes and this one is just as good as the others. Been to the surf fishing with it several times and it works prefectly. Love the anit-reverse system and drag, holds plenty of line in a varity of sizes and bail works as it should. If you are looking for a very affortable entry level reel that is dependable and will last you this is the reel for you.
shawn oshea : Great reel just do it
Paired these (bought 2) with berrypro surf rods (also an excellent product) and have 2 really nice surf rods for about $120 each. cant beat that with a stick. Now have purchased 6 of these, handles Pompano and 24 inch black drum in the surf all day long with ease. Just fantastic for the price.
Eric Lee : Drag sucks and so does reeling
So, what I know from this is that the center is composite and swells up. It is very difficult to put on and take off the reel. Not only that but the drag itself is very hard to pull and doesn't work. I bought reel grease to lube up the drag washers until I realized that the metal center didn't even fit properly in. If you're new to spinning reels, don't buy this reel. You'll have a hard time if you get a problem like this.
I found the solution which is to sand paper the metal center until it is small enough to fit your spool on easily. What a pain.
Not only that but reeling became such a hassle. Went deep sea fishing and made me out of breath after one reel session. Either I got a REALLY bad reel or this is just standard. I'm a young and fit angler and I'm telling you that this reel is absolute garbage.
I found a solution which is to shave off the metal rod in the middle with sand paper which is ridiculous.
Richard Embry : Before you buy, be sure the reel foot will fit your rod!
The product is well made, Penn is a quality company, and by the checklist this is a great value. HOWEVER, and this is a big one, just like the evil stepsisters in CInderella trying to fit their fat feet into the glass slipper, the reel foot on many Penn spinning reels are too tall/fat to fit into the spinning rod reel seat hoods. The reel foot just doesn't fit, particularly on higher end rods, but the reel feet will fit into Penn rod reel seat hoods. I ended up returning the reel and buying a competing brand/model that uses a smaller reel foot. Bummer.
So, this is a great value if you have a matching Penn rod; not so if you expect to possibly use this some day on another brand of rod.
La Aluminati : 5000
Reel feels really good. Super smooth nice look and good drag. Landed some small Dorado on it. It actually has a pretty tight drag no matter how much you loosen the spool. I took the reel apart to check for any binding issues, but the design of the spindle and its mounting seat just have a really snug fit which has a lot of drag. Great reel for the price and easy to service.
Jaime : You can’t go wrong for the price
This is the best real for its price I do a lot of jetty fishing pier fishing It gets the job done I’m bringing 18 to 24 inch blue fish I caught my first pompano as you see in the picture and it was 19 inches this real you can’t go wrong with it thank you so much can’t wait to order two more???????????? yeah see the fish I catch Penn pursuit III
David Crawford : Great value for a great reel
While I haven’t had the chance to fish with this reel yet, it feels great on the rod that I put it on. The action is very smooth and the weight is one you can carry and fish with all day. Can’t wait for my beach trip in May to use this reel.
Bishop : This reel deserves and earns each one of those 5 stars
You won’t find a better reel for this price range. from it’s drag smoothness and power to reel quality and durability this is one of my fav reels I spun nothing super fancy about it but its a solid solid performer. penn pursuit 2 was good and the 3 is even better much better and stronger drag
Susan n. : Came with stem broken
Product came broken, I have read many great reviews and have been waiting for the product to arrive as a birthday gift for my boyfriend.
Product came boxed( not clamshell packaging). The stem that gets mounted to the rod was broken into three pieces. Hand to send back and am currently waiting for processing.
The reel itself looked great ,and was smooth when reeling but seeing the condition it arrived in makes me worry about the integrity of the reel.
Strongly recommend this real to my friends that are getting started.
vee99 : Great value!
I cannot believe I got this for under $40, I got two more, when I bring inexperience people fishing,
this is easy to handle and durable. I use it sometimes but why would I since I use the Battle ll
and conflict ll as my main arsenal. Pair this with a Tica 8-6" med-action spooled with 17 lb superline,
you can use this anywhere to land med to large size hard fighting fish lake or river.
you can compare the product price from Costco, wayfair, bestbuy, lowes, target, homedepot, Walmart, ebay, amazon to find the best price for you
