Product reviews of Quantum Optix Spinning Fishing Reel, 4 Bearings (3 + Clutch), Anti-Reverse with Smooth, Precisely-Aligned Gears, Clam Packaging
MRM : A No Frills Budget Reel by Zebco
This reel is just OK. I didn’t realize that this company was owned by Zebco, which makes pretty low budget fishing gear. The reel itself is pretty massive and will not fit on a light duty rod. The reel seems smooth enough but who knows how it will hold up over time. It’s not sealed and the bail sticks a bit, but it is interchangeable whether you are right or left-handed. I don’t know if I would trust this for saltwater applications for bigger fish, which given the size of this reel suggests it’s for. I think you can do better.
Mary V : Massive Reel
This is a massive reel, big enough and strong enough to pull in large game fish and catfish. It is also heavy. Make sure you have a rod that will match this size reel. As far as capacity, it will hold 250 yards of 17 lb line. The gear ratio is 4.9:1. The retrieve can be easily set for right or left.
BoyMom : All our reels are Quantum!
We have multiple Quantum reels and they are pretty much all we buy now. They are affordable and reliable. I have some that are over ten years old and I just replaced it. They are quiet and spin easily. We wanted the big one for fishing in a local lake that stocks HUGE carp and catfish. This thing pulled in a monster and didnt struggle at all. I would have no issue taking this to the ocean.

Dale : Surprisingly Smooth
For a $25 reel this thing is super nice. I’m blown away. Smooth drag, good bearings. I see no issues at all. I use this size for my catfish and late season salmon bottom rigs. You can put a ton of line on and never have to worry.
Mohawk Mike : Where's the Anti-Reverse Switch?
The overall construction of the reel seems solid and the ergonomics of the reel are comfortable. One issue that stopped me from spooling it with new braid is the lack of a reverse switch. Even the manual states where the switch is, but searching this all around, the switch is missing. I contacted the manufacturer to ask if that was intentional and they replied the 60 and 80 reels do NOT come with the AR switch. Amazon needs to update their item description. I don't use that feature often out in the field, but when I do, it's less mess than opening up the bail to let line out for adjustments.
The bail arm is hard to lock back after opening. It takes way more than normal force on the handle to get it to lock back in place for retrieve. My other reels in this size are not like that. It could be something that will eventually loosen up after time, so I will have to revisit that in the future and edit this review if/when need be.
Aside from the AR switch throwing me off, the reel feels solid and the bearings smooth so I just might get another rod to set this rig up.

M. L Strickland : I'm not impressed at all
This reel arrived today and I immediately checked it over. I'm not impressed at all and will not even load line on it.
It will probably work OK. After all, I've caught fish with just a handline. This reel will not be very enjoyable to use, so I won't bother with it.
Here is what I observed, both positive and negative.
First, it is larger than the photos on the web page showed. There is a photo of a reel over a hand, and it is a good bit larger then the image in the photo. I clicked on different reel sizes and the photo was the same for all sizes of reels. That isn't a problem, just an observation. If I were going to use it, I would use it for surf fishing or for river fishing for flathead catfish.
The handle can be reversed for either right or left handed use which is a standard feature for spinning reels. So far, so good.
The drag seems to work OK. Easy to set and smooth adjustment. I didn't test it to verify the maximum drag, but they claim 10 pounds is the maximum. I would have expected more drag resistance.
Now for the negatives....
The bail locking and unlocking is inconsistent. When I lock the bail back for casting, it sometimes won't catch well. Then when I crank the handle to release the bail, it never releases smoothly and sometimes, it is quite hard to release. The handle just doesn't want to turn. I don't like having to fight with my reels! This is probably my biggest complaint with this reel.
The line capacity that is listed is 250 yards of 17 pound line. I can get that same capacity in a physically smaller and lighter reel. I was planning to put 15 pound braided line on it, but since I dislike the reel so much, I'm not going to waste the line.
When I read the manual, I saw the there is supposed to be an anti-reverse setting switch on the reel for turning the anti-reverse on and off. It is supposed to be on the bottom of the reel, but there is no switch on the reel I received. I looked at the picture of the reel on the Amazon page and can see that there is one in the photo, but my reel definitely does not have one. If both the manual and the web page indicate that a feature exists, I expect it to be on the product.
The manual also mentions that an exploded view parts can be found on the Quantum Fishing website. When I went to the website and entered the model of the reel on the "Support" page, the website told me that there was no product of that model. This was from the search engine. Next I went to the "Shop" tab and was able to find the page for the Optix reels. There was a link to the parts list and the exploded view drawing there. What really surprised me however was that the website showed that the reel is not available in any size! Strange!
One thing I learned on the product page though is that this is actually a Zebco reel. The parts listing page is titled "Zebco Parts Finder Results" in the browser page tab. Interesting!
All things considered, I don't like this reel and will probably not use it. When I do my surf fishing or catfishing, I'll just my quality baitcasting rod and reel that I bought specifically for those types of fishing.
This reel would not be enjoyable to use.
Amazon Customer : A bit of a “sticky wicket”
Price is good, but there is no bail stop and the bail is very hard to close while reeling and often sticks to the point of having to physically close it. I tried to loosen it up and managed to break it. Oh well, like I said it was cheap...and it didn’t cost much either.

Don Bertrand : great product
AAA+++
BmanTheColtsFan : Good reel for the price; No anti reverse on/off switch
This review is for the size 60 reel. When selecting which reel you want, keep in mind the photos show various differnt sizes and not all sizes have the same features. For example, one of the photos clearly shows a switch for turning the anti reverse on and off. Look closely at the rest of the picture and you will see the handle is differnt as well as other features. It is obviously another model. So be careful when looking at the vendor's pictures. They sell several reels on the same page and even if you select the size you want the pictures remain the same.
This particular reel that I am reviewing is the size 60. Yes, it was free for me through the Vine program, which is why I ended up with size 60. That is a bit larger than I typically use as I am in Oklahoma and I do not really need that big of a reel for the types of fish I chase. I am into crappie and Walleye and of course small and largemouth bass. This reel is for large freshwater game fish like stripers, muskie, or big catfish, or it is for saltwater fishing from piers and shores. This is bigger reel for fish that easily get over 10 pounds. The fish I go for can get big, but not much more than that and I can easily catch them with a smaller reel with good drag and an anti reverse switch.
This reel feels nice and smooth. There is good cranking power, there is a big crank handle that you can really grab on to and get that extra leverage. The drag seems to work fine enough and is easy to adjust. There is no extra spool included, but at the price this is certainly understandable. I think this would be a good reel for the casual fisherman that only goes fishing a few times a year and does not want to invest too much money in his or her equipment. If you are a more serious fisherman, you probably would not want this reel, mainly because of the lack of the on/off switch for the anti reverse. Don't get me wrong, this reel can handle big fish, but if you get a monster on you are going to wish that you had that option to turn off the anti reverse. This is just something that I need to have.
So in a nutshell, this is a well functioning reel for novice fisherman and below that just want to go out and fish a couple times a year and not spend too much money. The price is GREAT for that. If the boss invites you to go striper fishing for the weekend and you have nothing to fish with, order this one. It comes in very quickly and will do the job.
John L. : Loved it!!bought the 80 series too
