Florida Cold-front 2025

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

Today we had a major cold-front in Florida with temperatures in the 50s and northwest winds gusting to 20 mph.

In sharp contrast to last weekend it was jacket weather in Florida, and we spent the afternoon fishing leeward shores.

Although the fishing was slow, we did manage to get a couple decent fish to the boat.

On Lake Kissimmee, houseboats line the canal that leads to Grape Hammock Fish Camp.

_2_Lilies-Maidencane-Ki-F.jpg

A common sight on the Big-K is a mix of waterlilies and maidencane (locally known as Kissimmee grass).

_3_Waterlilies-Ylw-Maidencane-F.jpg

In the wild, waterlilies usually display white blooms, but a yellow-flowering variety is prevalent on Lake Kissimmee.

This year in central Florida, the fall topwater-bite has been better than it was during the post-spawn (search me).

For the past couple of weeks the Gambler Pop'n Toad has been a real standout.

Mom boated the best fish of the day on a J-spoon, a 23 bass weighing just under 7

Very nice fish.  No offense, but your mom looks younger than you.

Sunday morning was the first time I did not go to the ocean to fish, just didn't care for the weather.  I did some fresh water a little later in the morning.  Sitting here at 3:30 I'm debating on the ocean or going back to bed, it's nippy.

fishing user avatarlooking4structure reply :

Nice pics.I really like the lilly pads and the grass pics.Looks really deadly.

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

Thanks for sharing those great pictures .I'm glad your daughter still likes to fish  with you.

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

Simply Wonderful.

Big K looks a bit like a large pond I used to fish -shallow with lots of pads. On blue days we would flip 8" black-shad Gillrakers to any piece of overhead cover we could find. Those bass would literally hole up under stuff -the harder the better: dense undercut stumps and root masses, dense clumps, and there was a small undercut ledge -the former rim of this glacial sinkhole pond -that was exposed in places.

No boats there so we used a wide hulled canoe to stand in (had to have a partner who's coordination you trusted lol) and sight flip to the hidy-holes. The water was peaty and dark so the flash created by those black-shad worms really drew fish. I still have some, but haven't a place to apply them here. Another piece of dynamite in my arsenal collecting dust, but Oh so valuable for it's potential. Also used the J-spoons there, and the old (original) Bill Plummer's Bass Frog.

Thanks for the great pics, and the memories.

Oh Boy, I hope my wife doesn't see that statement, because my mother is 90 yrs old! ;D

Although my daughter's mom is in her early 60s, I do have about 5 years over her.

Where did you find a place THAT protected?  I was dragging anchors around all day trying to slow down enough to flip.

Rolo: Fantastic pictures, post, report, and fish! You just made me wish I was back living up in central Florida!

Yes, and lately she's been outfishing me on a regular basis.

When we first got married (1964) she had a million questions for me.

Today the questions are a far fewer, and half the time I'm the one looking for an answer  :D

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

Nice post Roger. The last couple of times together my wife has out fished me also. You two have a couple of years on us. We were married in 1976. A good women is much harder to find than good fish. Well done on both counts.

The Big-K is about 13 miles long and has a number of different faces.

The entire Kissimmee Chain spans over 35 miles and is even more diverse.

Here's a couple more:

fishing user avatarBig Mike in Fl reply :

roger, I hope to run into you one day fishing the kissimmee chain, because if I do, I'll know I'm fishing in the right places...I learn alot from your posts, being another florida bass fisherman, sometimes what guys from other states say doesn't always apply, but I know if you're chiming in, its something I can take to the bank.

Most of the 35+ thousand acres looks like that. I find myself saying "man, this place looks good" all day long while I'm getting skunked... :'(

and YES, Big Mike, he is the best.

Yeah, ditto!

We had our Classic on the 18th, and were getting beat up by the waves. Thank goodness I had that powerpole put on, but it was still tough trying to flip in that wind! We finally took the long way around to get to Tiger creek. Caught some shorts, I caught a 26" mudfish which was fun for a few minutes. But finally got more bites fishing senkos wacky style, still too short of that 14" limit.

I ended up getting my vertigo back and had to get everything re-balanced in my inner ears, after all that rough pounding on the lake.

You can hook up to some really nice hogs out there and I too hope to run across Roger and the Mrs. out there one day

fishing user avatarsenile1 reply :

Those are some nice looking bass and the area is beautiful, Roger.  Thanks for the pictures.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

We have several members that fish the Kissimmee chain such as MrLiteTackle, Lee (fishindaddy),

Big Mike in Fl, Fishing Cowgirl and others. I'm looking forward to meeting some BR members on the water,

I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

Those pictures are awesome and really capture the essence of Lake Kissimmee and one of my favorite places on earth, Grape Hammock. My  one club had a tournament out of there that weekend and man did it blow. Same thing happend last year-the first front of the year came through the Saturday night or our tournament. When you are sleeping in one of the trailers there and the nuts or whatever are falling on the roof and you can hear the wind whistling through the live oak-you know its going to be a-blowin that day. I was up there this past weekend with my other club-no fronts-just 15-25 blowing all weekend. Fishing was good though. I've had a couple of conversatrions with that steer!
