Your Single Best Day On The Water 2025

fishing user avatarbadhatharry reply :

Tell us about that one day that you hope to relive someday.  Mine was a Saturday in early June, that my daughter (then 11) and I  traveled to a small lake in Eastern Washington.  Between us we caught over 30 bass..mostly largemouth, a few smallies....the smallest of which was 2 lbs.  Three were over 5 and every one of them was caught on topwater.  It just doesn't get much better than that around here.   How about you guys?

fishing user avatarFinCulture reply :

Best day recently was probably last week when I caught a 4.5, a 3.5 and 3 in about five minutes of fishing

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Watching my grandson Aiden flip his jig under the dock, seeing the realization on his face when the bass sucked it in, & then a quick hookset!

He said he watched the strike!

I had planned on doing some night fishing the evening before heading north on my yearly trip in July.  A severe storm blew it and I canceled the idea, but headed out early the next morning to get in an hour or two before leaving with the family.  I caught 23 bass in less than two hours, 21 of them on topwater.  I headed home, packed up the family and headed out on the six hour drive.  Fifteen minutes after we arrived I was on the water. Seven smallies, four largemouth all over 3lb. and four pike later, I thought the Lord was preparing me for my demise. I almost had a heart attack when I hooked into my biggest muskie to date.  Needless to say, I didn't sleep that night. I couldn't stop thinking about getting out there again in the morning.

fishing user avatarbasseditor reply :

Numbers or size?

Numbers

Amistad 2008 = 200 bass, my son and I, in a day and half. 2# to 7 # and broke off bigger ones.

Size

Falcon 2012, 40 bass from 5 to 10 pounds all on one hump. Never moved all day.

I hope those lakes rebuild before I'm too feeble to fish any more.

Your best day on the water might not even include a catch.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

first fish100# amberjack, about 15 margate snapper over 20#, topped it off with bevy of bull dolphin, all on spinning gear.

Another day 2 back to back lemons in the 150# area caught with 25# class boat rod with a  spheros 8000.

multiple outings catching tarpon on fly.

Favorite all time catch, permit that I ran down on foot 300 yds, paced it off later in the day.

Favorite time, watching my son in law land a 5# jack off the beach, as an expriernced fishermen he couldn't believe a fish so small could fight so hard, my best moment ever.

This makes me hate you guys in the south. Lol

My biggest limit here in PA was 26lbs and I damned near got struck by lightning trying to get off the water. It was absolute craziness. A buddy who was on the water with me also put together a bag in the 20lb range.

I've also had some weird/freak days on the Susquehanna where we'd catch 20-30 smallmouth, a handful of channel cats, hook into a 20+Lb carp on light gear, and have a musky blow up a spook.

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

I've got two.

#1: Fishing from a johnboat on bass that had never seen a topwater before. Sure, it was half cheating, but seeing 20+ fish blow up on your Hula Popper in less than an hour was fun! That's a bass every three minutes. The hard part was taking out the trebles.

#2: A hot, hot afternoon in NC. One fish. Of course, that fish just happened to be 7 3/4 pounds, my pb. Funnest fight ever!

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

No way to call one the best but the day I caught a 30lb 2oz 5 fish limit in Kansas was way up the list. First fish of the day was a 7lb 2oz fish and by the end of the day my smallest in my top 5 was 5 even. The bass and wipers had the shad pushed up into a shallow, flat cove and point. It never made it above freezing so I was the only boat on the water and there was an area the size of a football field that almost constantly had fish blowing up somewhere on it. On top of the bass I caught over 40 wipers from 4 to 8lbs 2ozs as well.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

I know exactly. It was June 1989. Post spawn. I caught 24 keepers 15 inches or bigger with the top 6 between 5 to 6 lbs on Mark Twain lake. I was using a Bomber Prop A Minnow which is simply a Long A Minnow with a propeller on the tail. I was "pattern" fishing going from point to point . I worked the lure as fast as I could and still stay in contact with the surface .

fishing user avatarBassinLou reply :

One of my favorite days on the water that quickly comes to mind, was last year. May-June. Between my Brother-in law and I, we landed 60 bass between 2-6lbs, frog fishing in the Glades. We beat our previous record which was 58 the year before. I was pretty sore the following day that's for sure. Lol...

fishing user avatardavecon reply :

Excluding big fish, best day by myself was last summer. Caught 4 bluegills all over a pound each, 4 tarpon between 20 and 40, 4 bass between 4 and 5, two reds over 30 inches each, and about 25 snook, mostly 20 to 25 inches each. All caught on the same lure within 150 yards of each other. Had the boat on the trailer at 11:30 am. Couldn't sleep for 2 nights.

The best day with someone else was many years ago when my son was about 12. Hit an offfshore ledge just right. He caught 17 bass on 17 casts while I caught 24 on 24 casts, missed one then caught another 15 in a row. I think we caught about 75 total that day. Most were about 2 to 3 with a few over 5. Great day with a young kid.

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

I'm not sure if I have a single best day.....all of them are great days!!! I've had a day where I have been able to catch yellowfin tuna in a wide open bite with a cane pole, 3ft of line and a hook.  Probably one of them that stands out, fishing with a friend float tubing fishing a jig and crushing them with fish ranging between 2 to 6+lbs. And of course when my son caught his first bass on a plastic worm which was shortly followed by his remarks of  "this is easy Daddy".

fishing user avatar00 mod reply :

One morning, 83 fish, most over 4lbs, including 2 over 10.  Got to the point where you would raise your rod over your head and try to make the fish jump.  If it wasn't over 7lbs, you gave it slack to try and get free.  Never again have I had anything close to this, but man do I hope it happens again.  All on crankbaits!

the stats- 2 over 10, 1 over 9, 1 over 8, 4 over 7, 10 over 6 and 10 over 5.  2 biggest were 10lbs 9 oz and 10lbs 2 oz.

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

My best day for size was 5 largemouth between 43-44lbs down at lake Baccarac  in Mexico.

My best day for size was 5 smallmouth between 30-31lbs on lake Erie.

fishing user avatarMIbassin reply :

Fishing off of the Kenai peninsula in alaska back in 2013, caught over 30 rockfish in 45 minutes jigging big spoons. After catching a limit on those we moved out to the deeper water in search of halibut and ling cod. In 6 hours between 4 guys we caught 48 halibut, 12 ling cod, and 10 more rockfish. Biggest halibut went 128lbs and the ling cod went 49lbs

fishing user avatareverythingthatswims reply :

In 2-3 hours one morning last September throwing a BBZ 8" and a 6" Bull Shad (didn't have a scale) I caught three 18" largemouth, a 19" largemouth, a 20" largemouth, and a 21" largemouth. While 2 guys in a canoe throwing wacky senkos (who told me my bait was too big) watched and didn't get bit. Watched every fish eat the bait, and the 21" largemouth hit so close to my kayak that I had to hit free spool so I could net him. Left the river and shot a limit of dove.

fishing user avatarmnbassman23 reply :

Last fall my father in law and I had a 27lb 5 fish limit in MN, which is almost unheard of. This spring we had a similar day with a 26lb limit including my personal best 6.76lb largemouth. Hoping this fall brings similar results.

About 10 years ago I was fishing one of my local honey holes on a misty Saturday morning.  The previous night was a full moon.  I drop in at the ramp and proceeded to throw a 3-5' balsa crankbait.  After two hours and 45 largies I  put down the rod.  Every fish was caught within 50 yards of the ramp. 15 of them were 4lbs or more.

These are the kind of stories I like to read.

Tells me every thing I need to know about fishing pressure.  Pressure is merely 2 or more people fishing in close proximity,  some one will catch may as well be you  Pressure is having a built in excuse for not catching.  Let other people get intimidated by your presence, not you by their presence.

Yup...every year I have a couple of days that are "once in lifetime" type of days. Strangely enough, almost everyone of those days is doing something different than the last time I had "one of those days".

fishing user avatarMN_Bassin reply :

In 7 hours, my friend and I caught well over 80 bass, while there was a club tournament going on. I was trying to give a team tips and I caught one while talking, they still didn't listen. It was to the point where we were both laughing everytime we caught one!

fishing user avatarsteverowbotham reply :

I've had better days since, but the one that really stands out for me was 8 years ago.  I'd never had a 20+ pound bag of smallies in my life, and my best friend and I decided to head out for a few hours one afternoon.  It was last minute and I was actually heading home from a tournament on a different lake when he called.  He wanted to take his brother's "new" boat for a test run.  We werent expecting much as we were in a different area than we normally fished and only had a few hours.  After a biteless hour, I got bit slow rolling a spinnerbait over deep water and it was a 5+ lbs fish.  When we got it boatside, there were 10 or more fish swarming with it.  All giant.  We spent the next two hours landing 20 or more fish in the 3.5 - 6 pound range.  It was by far the best day I'd ever had and will always stand out when people ask this question.  We didnt have a camera so I called my girlfriend at the time (now wife) to meet us at the ramp for a picture before we released them.

At my age everyday on the water is a treasure.

Castaic at it's peak in the early 90's was a incredible giant bass fishery, my best 5 bass limit was was 62 lbs, PB is 19.3 lbs, my best day was 18 bass over 10 lbs, my top 5 jig bass life time; 17.4, 17.4, 17.6, 18.6 and 19.3 lbs, all fading memories now. Winning a night tournament with my son at age 15 when he caught the most of the big bass and pulled his catch out to be weight was priceless.

I'm  going to say - I don't want to have "My Best Day Ever" - Unless it's my Last One as well.

April 14th, 2014. My wife and myself were on our honeymoon and while she had caught a few bass here and there she was totally unprepared for the day we had. I was too! It started out getting to a family pond(17 acres) and seeing a 6ft. swamp snake in the road, she wasn't happy. lol We walked in and my brother had the boat In the water and we were off. I missed a strike right away and didn't care as I thought It was pretty durn cool we were fishing on our honeymoon.

We fished down the bank without anything but great conversation. Tresa made a cast and started talking, and I told here to get the slack out of her line. The minute she took the slack out the line shot sideways and after a short fight I lipped a 2+, a beautiful fish. She caught her personal best 15 minutes In and had we left right then It would have been a great day! We fished for a couple of hours and she was up on me 6-1. I was genuinely thrilled for her to be having a great day.

I finally figured out a little something on a mis-cast and while she Insisted on fishing her way which had been quite successful I went In another direction and things got Interesting. She cast her senko with a Poche tail-spinner(red/shad) right on the bank and set the hook on a chunky 3. That broke her earlier personal best. While she was very happy I was all smiles! I caught a few in the 4-5 lb. range and scolded myself for not bringing enough flukes or boot-tail swimbaits but honestly didn't really care as this was a day that the fish were on and my wife was having FUN!

We had a little time left and I went to a ditch that ran from the bank to about 6 feet out. She cast her senko and slowly reeled It into that ditch and about 3 feet from the bank she set the hook and the fight was on. After a decent fight I lipped a 5+ bass that had inhaled her senko. She once again broke her personal best.

In a nutshell this day was and Is the single best day I've  had on the water. The timing and the fact that she caught her biggest fish ever and all on our honeymoon. It simply was a tremendous day!

fishing user avatarBass newb reply :

Sounds fishy to me. 200 fish, 80 fish, all over 6lbs, 10 pounders repeatedly....

My best day in the 5 or so weeks that I've been fishing was today! 3 bass, big on 2lb 2 oz 16.5" long.

It was a big belly bass.

fishing user avatarGilbone reply :

Febuary this year a week after the bass master classic left. Me and my buddy fixed up a old 16 foot jon boat. put new decks on it and carpet. the whole nine yards for a jon boat. A wendsday afternoon we put the boat in on hartwell about 2 miles from greenpond. I never used a fluke until that day. the first cast i had a 3lb large mouth chase it all the way to the boat. then we went up near some docks. skipped it under and let is fall and gental popping it out and the boom a fish hit it then he came off and the fluke was sitting in my sight then boom he came up and hammered it on the surface 10 feet infront of me. after that we cught 5 fish on that one dock all over 3 lbs then went across the cove and caught 8  off another dock the same way. by far my best day 10 fish all over 3 lbs but 2 of them and the big fish was 6 the best day on the water ever.
