Questions about SHIMANO Sedona Fi Spinning Reel
Q:
Is this a compact reel
Answer: It's bigger than a minne reel, but not real large.
Answer: Yes, The "C" in the title means "Compact"
Answer: The 3000 is fairly large. Go for the 2500.
Q:
Where is it made?
Answer: I believe Malaysia
Q:
Looking for a saltwater reel. Fishing for trout and red. How will this hold up?
Answer: Holds up great. I've had it for 3 weeks and caught plenty of trout, reds and flounder.
Answer: Shimano does not rate this reel for saltwater use. Now that said with good attention to maintenance and care following each outing my Sedonas have held up pretty well for light saltwater use. If you have the misfortune to drop the reel in saltwater or it gets heavily soaked, take my advice and tear it apart for thorough cleaning and lubrication as the spindle seal system allows water to pass into the gearbox/body.
Q:
Which size would be right for a ultra light panfish rig?
Answer: Hi, if you need ultra light, then 1000 FI is the smallest size from Shimano. C2000SFI is in the same size, but with lower small, thus if you use very small diameter line for your ultra light rig, C2000SFI may be even more suitable.
Answer: I use mine with an ultra light rod for lookdown/moon fish up to 2 lbs. I'm certain it will work with a light rod for larger fish. I love it, especially the drag. It's the best ultra light reel that I have ever owned. If you are using it in fresh water it will last forever. I've used mine in salt for two years and have had no problems.
Answer: Size 1000
Answer: When did they start using the upgraded parts in the 1000? Mine is 4 years old and did not know if I have the upgraded version or not.
Q:
What does SE stand for
Answer: At the beginning of the model number? I expect that it's specific to the SEdona model.
Q:
5000 good for surf fishing for sharks?
Answer: I don’t believe the Sedonas are saltwater rated by Shimano
Q:
Is this a new reel?
Q:
Is this 1000FI a ultra light reel and will it go in reverse/
Answer: It is a very light, smooth and reliable reel. After trying the first one I purchased, I bought a second one. The reel does not go in reverse, but neither does my Van Staal that costs more than ten times as much! Both are great reels. I wouldn’t give it a second thought.
Answer: Incredibly light, and will not go in reverse
Q:
Does the handle have a locking screw for the handle under the bearing cover cap?
Answer: I haven’t taken the handle apart yet to find out. According to YouTube videos it’s supposed to.
Answer: Don't think so but not sure. Sorry couldn't be more certain
Answer: Yes.
Q:
Difference between fl and Xgfi on 4000 model?
Answer: XG is "Extra high Gear." This means that you'll reel in more line for each turn of the handle.
Q:
I have a 6’6 ul trout rod i’d like to pair this reel with. would the 1000 series be big enough, or should i go with the 2000?
Answer: Hi, to answer the question I use 2000 with medium weight pole that works great ???? where I might catch bass or trout. I use 1000 with light pole for stream trout fishing.
Answer: Both reels would work very well, but I would go with the 1000 on an ultra light rod.
Answer: size of the rod doesn't matter as much as what line you want to use. look at the descriptions and choose by what size line you want to use and how much line you want the bail to hold
Q:
is the 5000 model good for any kind of fishing?
Answer: Yeah many kinds. For larger fish it’s great.
Answer: I catch Speckled Trout, Flounder, Red Fish, Snapper and occasionally shark. I've had mine for about a year and love it. Have not had any problems with it.
Q:
Does it have a spool release to allow the line to go out by turning the crank backwards?
Answer: Yes it has a main shaft and gear unlock to allow back reeling.
Answer: No, the Shimano anti reverse bearing precludes that.
Q:
Which reel would you get for salt water fishing?
Answer: I have 3 Sedonas and I love them. However they are not for salt water fishing. I do have the Sepheros SW & the Socorro SW for inshore salt water fishing.
Answer: Stradic 5000
Q:
What size should i get for brook and rainbow trout that are max 18 inches? most are 10-15 inches. small creek fishing
Answer: The 2000 series is a good reel for trout. You can go with the 1000 series too. Key is the line you use. 4lb or 6 lb will be good for either.
Answer: I would buy the smallest one available. Spool it with a high quality six pound test line. Use a fluorocarbon leader tied directly to the line, unless the conditions cause your line to twist. If your line is twisting a lot, use a very small, high quality swivel. My favorite knot is the uni-knot; it never fails. There are several U Tubes on the internet you can watch to learn how to tie it. Good fishing!
Q:
I ordered the se2500hgfi. what i got only indicates 2500hg. is this the same thing?
Answer: Yes that is the correct reel, FI is just the series, the actual model. SE2500HGFI is the Shimano ItemNo.
Answer: The FI refers to the generation. The FH was the last model. The FJ will be the next model.
Answer: Sorry, I am not positive, but I think it is the same
Q:
Do these reels come with an extra spool?
Answer: No they don't. You would have to find another one online.
Answer: No
Answer: No
Answer: No
Q:
what's the gear ratio for the 1000 reel? what is the weight? TIA
Q:
I would like to fish trout on 4 lb line and sometimes larger fish with 10 lb line. Would the se2500hgfi be a good choice?
Answer: Heck yeh you can. Now this reel maybe a little bit for 4 lb lines. I would suggest using a little bigger line or 15lb braid with a smaller leader. I use 15-30lb braid with a 10-15lb floro leader to catch speckled trout in the gulf all day long. And I wouldn’t be scared to hook some reds also.
Answer: Yes. I catch Speckled Trout, Redfish and flounder on it with 10 to 12 lb line all the time. I love it. It feels really nice. I've enjoyed it very much.
Answer: Absolutely. This size reel can handle both those lines well.
Answer: This reel will be fine for what you want to use of for.
Q:
Way you don’t show a picture with dimensions/ model?
Q:
Would size 4000 be too big for a medium heavy rod
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I don’t think so. Sounds just right to me. I have a 4,000 on a two piece medium uglistik and it seems a little large for that rod so a medium heavy sounds just right. I use 10lb and 15lb mono with my 4,000 reels.
Answer: I'm fairly new to fishing but my understanding is the size options are more to do with the weight/amount of line you plan to use. As such with a medium/heavy IMHO you'd be fine using a 4000 reel in order to put a heavier weight line on there.
Q:
What dies the HG stand for?
Answer: When they put hg next to the model like 3000 or 3000hg hg mean higher gear ratio
Answer: Hagane Gears, means it will last a long time all the expensive shimano reels have them
Answer: Hagen gear
Q:
How much 30lb braid would this hold?
Answer: If this is the same real I have I don't believe 30 lb is recommended but if it is it'll say so on the spool. Don't have mine available at the moment
Q:
Is it make in Japan?
Answer: It’s made by Shimano. I assume it is. But it is, like most Shimano reels, a great reel. We use it for sockeye salmon on the Kenai River.
Answer: Malaysia.
Q:
Is the 8000FI made for saltwater surf usage or should I be looking into a reel desigend for salt water applications like the Stella SW, thanks.
Answer: I only use it in Saltwater. I've had no problems. I clean it with water after every use to get saltwater off.
Q:
Who is the original manufacturer?is this made by koria?
Answer: Shimano is the manufacturer, with some items being manufactured in Japan and/or Malaysia.
Answer: Shimano
Q:
Is the graphite color unique to Amazon?
Answer: Do not know. Doesn’t interfere with catching fish.
Q:
Is the 3000 XG left handed?
Answer: this reel can be used left or Right. The handle can easily changed from one to the other side. Delivered as left handed model. If you like the handle on the Right side, just open the handle screw cap, give the handle on the other side, close the handle screw cap - done! Hope to have informed you sufficiently, otherwise you can contact us again.
Q:
Is the 2500hg good for large catfish ?
Answer: I'd say that that's entirely dependent on your definition of a large catfish. Note that it's really not designed for greater than 10-pound mono. While you can get higher strength out of the same diameter braids, I think that's a sign for you. This reel is more for what I'd consider to be mid-range stuff.
Answer: I've caught 38 inch Redfish with it.
Answer: No to small.
Answer: Oh yeah definitely
Q:
Did shimano copy pfluger, or did pfluger copy shimano?
Answer: It is my opinion that no none copied. Both pflueger and Shimano are good. I prefer Shimano.
Answer: not sure but i love this reel..i have two and use them 4 times per week for 6 hrs a day...never had one issue...quiet, light, reliable.
Q:
Hello, What is the exact model number of Shimano Sedona 2500 ?
Answer: I don't have the real handy to check. 1000 miles away.
Answer: SE2500HGFI
Q:
Does the 2500FI have an anti reverse switch?
Answer: the specs on this reel say it does have anti reverse...
Answer: No it doesn't.
Q:
please tell me how many bearing inside sedona 6000
Answer: Not 100% sure but 4
Answer: 3+1
Answer: 4
Q:
Can I spool super line directly on this reel or do I need to put on backing?
Answer: I put some mono on mine first just to make sure.
Q:
Se puede usar en mar?
Q:
What is the difference with the HG model?
Q:
what size would you recommend for a 7ft saltwater rod? {im new to fishing so it would be helpful} thx
Answer: It depends, what kind of fishing do you plan? 7ft may be used for ultra light fishing with light lures, when smaller sizes 1000 and 2000 may be suitable. But also for deep water jigging with heavy jigs, when 4000 and 5000 size is appropriate. 2500 and 3000 are there between. When choose the reel must first look at your baits and then choose accordingly the suitable line diameter, reel according to that diameter and rod with suitable lure weight test, so that they all would match to work together.
Answer: Depends on what size line you will use. I have the 2500 with 20lb test braid and it works for me. I can get about 125 yards of line on a reel and that's good for most redfish/trout inshore fishing. If you are going for bigger fish then get a 3000 or 4000.
Answer: Inshore fishing. I would go with the 4000. It can handle all species including sharks.
Q:
Will the 3000 fi model be good for a 7 foot medium heavy ugly stick gx2?
Answer: Yes depending on what species you are targeting this should fit nicely on a 7' med heavy rod. The reel would be light weight for it.
Answer: Yes. It will fit perfect. Although I recommend to buy the 3500 or higher if you are planing to go fishing on the sea.
Q:
Which model will work best for an ice fishing rod?
Answer: Match the reel to the size of the rod. Use a 1000 on a light rod. A 3000 reel will cover a very large range of rods and the fish you are trying to get. As a benchmark, on my 3000, I have caught 20 pound channel cats, oversize redfish, triple tail and sea trout. On the same reel, I have had sharks, cobia and stingrays strip my reel!
Answer: All models are great reels. I would use a small series and choose the model that fits your budget
Answer: They also now make a 500 soze which will take like 100 yards of 2lb mono. That's the most common choice, but a 1000 would suffice too.
Answer: Smalller is better. the 1000 size
Answer: The 1000
Q:
Did I read that this reel now has no anti-reverse switch/lever?
Answer: You are correct. It does not have a reverse lever, but I do not consider this a problem. I like this reel; I bought a second one a few weeks after purchasing the first one. I think it is an exceptional reel for the price and would recommend it.
Answer: Yes, it is absent from all of their newer freshwater reels except the Sienna. It was one of the first things to break, and with how durable the new drag systems are, there was really no good reason to keep it around.
Answer: I am sorry, I do not remember. It was such a piece of junk, I returned it as soon as I could. I am very (VERY!) happy with my Penn Battle II. Caught some real nice Yellowfin Tuna and Skip Jack last week in the 20-40 pound range on the Grande out of H & M Landing.
Answer: Yes
Answer: No
Q:
I am a lefty. Can i switch the handle sides on the 3000hg?
Answer: Sure...jus simply switch handles to desired side.
Answer: Yes of course if you only can unscrew and change sides.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Why does the picture show last years Sedona model, the new Sedona has a gold handle?
Q:
How can i replace the small white "washer" behind the line clip on the spool?I accidentally removed it?
Answer: Either you would need to be creative and make and install the plastic piece or purchase a new replacement spool.
Answer: I thought this was a basic plastic for the black plastic to hold up, but what is it's use then?
Answer: Call Shimano USA
Q:
What size should be used for Bass Fishing?
Answer: I have two of these set up for finesse bass fishing. I use the 2500 HG size with a 7 foot medium rod and 20lb test line. Its perfect.
Answer: This is really an overall great reel , light , well balanced. I fish it on a 6'6" St. Croix rod for walleye and bass. Very smooth and great bale action.
Answer: If you are chasing big hogs in cover go for the 3000 or above. I use the 2000 to chase saltwater inshore species and it performs beautifully
Answer: 2000-3000 is your best bet. I have the 3000 compact. Depends really on how much line you want to have available
Q:
Line capacity!
Q:
Is a anti reverse switch on the sedona 8000?
Answer: No, there isn't
Answer: NO, is not.
Q:
What size for catfish 10-20 pounds range
Answer: 4000-5000. This is a shallow spoil reel designed for braid and ultra thin lines. I would choose a reel with a deeper spool for the size fish you anticipate.
Answer: 5000 XGFI is what I would get, still only has 24 pound max drag but set up to hold heavier line
Answer: 2500-3500 will be fine with 30 Lb braid probably. You could put 65lb power pro braid also with a 50lb floro leader and you should be good to go.
Answer: 400 size
Q:
What does the XG stand for in the size options?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: The XG and HG both identify the reel at a 6.2:1 gear ratio. If the model of the reel does not include XG or HG then the gear ratio is a 5.0:1.
Answer: Maybe XG means extra large. This is a very big reel. A 1000 is a small reel.
Answer: I assume you mean HG so the HG model has a 6.2:1 gear ratio and the one without HG has a 5.0:1 gear ratio
Q:
Does this reel come with carbon fiber drag washers?
Q:
for fishing saltwater onshore im not sure if the 5000 model will be over kill or a good size to have
Answer: Depends on what fish you are going after. I mostly use 2500HG for inshore reds/trout, but you can go higher if you want.
Product reviews of SHIMANO Sedona Fi Spinning Reel
downstreamoutdoors : Disappointed
Sorely disappointed in this reel. The biggest thing that bothers me is it'll only hold 100yds of 4lb test and you can't buy other spools to increase the amount it will hold.
Timothy Reigle : Won’t work
Only goes one way
lannie : I use 10 of these reels. Never have a problem.
Salt water fishing
Chris Roberts : Shiamno for the win
Love shiamno
John Bacon jr : sweet and smooth reel
cant wait to try it out on some pink salmon
Vernon Olds : Shallow spool reel
I did not realize this was a shallow spoil reel for use with thin diameter lines. When I spooled it with the correct line it worked better.
DaddyMac : Catch some fish
I use this for bass fishing and it is very smooth. Drag works great.
Amazon Customer : Light easy to cast
Top 3 reels for the price. Solid reel
downstreamoutdoors : Disappointed
Sorely disappointed in this reel. The biggest thing that bothers me is it'll only hold 100yds of 4lb test and you can't buy other spools to increase the amount it will hold.
Brendan : Line capacity listed is 40-50% less in reality
Product advertises 105 yards of .15mm braid.
Just had it spooled fit less than 70 yards of .13mm braid.
Completely brazen false advertising. 3 stars for being a good reel, but the false line capacity listed will prevent me from using it as it was intended
David C. Crenshaw : No switch for Anti reverse
This is a good reel. However, it does have the traditional switch to allow back reeling. I returned this and purchased a different reel because of that.
Keith T. Cheung : Smooth as butter!
This thing is beautiful! Well made and reels like butter....smooth and quiet. Took it out several times already and have not had any problems. Feels like a very high-end reel at a great price.
Amazon Customer : good reel

David C. Crenshaw : No switch for Anti reverse
This is a good reel. However, it does have the traditional switch to allow back reeling. I returned this and purchased a different reel because of that.
Alex : Great reel
This is a great reel for bass and inshore fishing. I used it first time on some saltwater flats and it performed beautifully. The new 2017 design looks very slick so I'm really happy with the look and performance. I spooled it up with some 20lb PowerPro braid so I think it should be a nice setup for me for a while. If you are wondering what is the difference between 2500 and 2500HG its the gear ratio. The HG model has a 6.2:1 gear ratio and is the normal 2500 has a 5.0:1 gear ratio. I prefer a higher gear ratio, but it depends on the type of fishing you are doing.
Samuel Crandall : Four Stars
Good solid reel. Use it on a 7'' Medium action Fenwick Eagle. Caught a few Reds on it

E : Great Reel
Took it to Canada on its maiden voyage, and it worked great catching walleye and small mouth bass.
I did see it cheaper on EBay after I purchased it
GAP : Lightweight
I caught a lot of trout on this fishing reel. It's smooth quiet and the drag works perfectly.
berlinguyinca : nice reel
but the little flippy handle thingy is incredible annoying and wished it would just be a fixed handle
Elias diaz : Good

I liked everything about this reel EXCEPT the fact that it has no reverse-direction switch. I need that feature and use it a lot so I returned it and ordered a different brand. Other than missing this feature, it appears to be a high quality reel.

Michael : Pulls in Muskies
Really nice I’d buy again
Matthew Fogleman : Great reel for the money, freshwater or inshore/near-shore saltwater
Probably the best value in a light reel I've found. I've had many Sedonas and they have each lasted me over 10 years with maintenance. I use them for inshore and near-shore saltwater fishing. Both the handle and the drag are very smooth. Typically have the 4000 reels spooled with 20-lb or 30-lb PowerPro and paired with 6.5 and 7 ft rods. Probably won't last you a lifetime, but for less than $100 they will last a long time. Learn to properly disassemble them and clean/lube them occasionally, just like any other good reel.
FPaulsen : Shimano Quality
I purchased this for my son and he liked it so much he also bought a smaller model.
From the cheapest to the top of the line Shimano Reels are all good.
Amazon Customer : Five Stars
Very smooth little reel.
Elias diaz : Good

Jason : Great value
Worked as advertised. Very smooth reel.
