Just been wondering have anyone in Va been out fishing through out the winter and had any luck with the way our weather been changing? Been gazing out my fishing poles wondering if worth a trip out?

Hope you and the family had a great Christmas and New Year.
No, I have not bee out since November. In fact, I have taken all of the line off my reels and loosened the drag and spools.
First tournament coming up is Region 3 fun tournament at the end of February on the hot side of Anna.
The club and Region 3 tournaments usually start in March.
If you do go out please let us know how you did.

If its not frozen, I'm trying! Caught fish earlier last week, looking forward to the brief warmup this week. If conditions are favorable this weekend, I'm hopping in the boat and giving it a shot!

Yea I haven't been out since September and been wondering. I never bass fish in the winter or know what the first thing to do but maybe jig? The places I thought about is the ponds around my way but their shallow ponds. One of them range in the 12' in the middle of the pond but no structures I have yet found. one pond is pratically a lilie pond and the others are lilies and fallen trees around the pond edges but the lilies are gone for now........
Sam- My christmas was very good and pleasing. I got my wife her favorite Chai tea and german rock sugar and actually got her a dragonfly cast iron tea kettle for Christmas. She went and got me some nice jigs and a few fishing tackle that I'm pleased with from Green Top off one of the employees advice. Her and my son was very happy with this year so I'm glad. We got my son a Wii and a few games. Some movies and toys. For her I got her Under Armour sweater she wanted, a new purse, perfume and some clothing/ boots I let her pick out before Christmas but couldn't have till then.
New Years wasn't bad, we went to her friends house and I let her drink and I drove us home. Actually I for the moment for now at least quit drinking. Everytime I get the erge I'll either will or have the wife make some hot tea and I drink that. Doing good too been over a month now. How was yours Sam?

Endless, sounds like you have a nice holiday.
I got white sox, some ties, three white dress shirts, some books on tape to listen to as I drive around the Commonwealth, two new belts (one for jeans other for dress). No fishing stuff this year as I have way too much and I plan on using them this year.
I saw the Senkos in Apple Plum (or was it Plum Apple) that you metioned last year. They were at Pecker's for full price so I passed on them. Green top has Senkos on sale through Tuesday but I doubt I will go all the way out there to buy just one bag of the Plum Apple (or was it Apple Plum) which they may not have in stock.
Loaded up at the Fishing Expo so that made up for not getting any fishing stuff at Christmas.
Thats about it. As you get old you get more adult stuff, which is a bummer.

Yea it's plum apple but everytime I'm at Green Top none in stock. Only place I find that color is at Dicks in Spotsy. My favorite color. Only color I used last year. I like catching Dicks 2 for $10 senko sale when they have their sales. My wife got me another buzzbait and some new Spinnerbaits so I'm going to be getting into those when the time calls for them. I got into Buzzbaits at the end of year and landing my PB on it so now I want to dedicate more time to them and Spinners. I think I fished once or twice with a spinnerbait and only landed one small bass.
I do need to get my wife a spinning setup before bass fishing really kicks off so she can have a wacky or a finesse setup and I can turn her Extreme BC combo into a crank combo for shallow cranks for her. I'm hoping to do allot more fishing this year with her and try to turn into that morning fisher!!
Clothes are always nice and how you like the books on tapes?

THat how I got started in that store last year Christmas. lol but the place is great. I didn't expect a tea store like that to be as busy or popular but it is and me and the wife are hooked. Oh yea! White tea - silver yen zin pearls. Flavored white - chateau blanc. These are great blended or alone. Black tea - monkey picked. Herbal - honeybush vanilla and zinzerberg coconut. And my favorite white aruvidic chai. Lots of good green teas like dragonwell. Anda bunch of oolong teas I can't remember the names. How about you, any fav's? I always pack a thermos every day with tea. After my cup of coffee in the morning, it keeps me warm and evenly caffeinated throughout the day!

Aluma-Bass, we could be getting heavy rains on Friday so check the weather before venturing out on Saturday.
If the cold front does move through the area the fish may have lockjaw on Saturday.
And the water may be stained from the runoff.
So if you go out please let us know where you went and if you caught anything.
My next time to fish will be in early March when I visit a Maryland client and will try to fish their pond, weather permitting.

Endless, spring is a good time for spinnerbaits. Give 'em a try and be sure to post what you catch with them.

Buzzbait fishing is a blast. I love to throw a buzzbait and watch those big splashes or light swirls when the fish take them.
You can throw a buzzbait any time of the day. I usually start out with a buzzbait or other topwater and may go back to the buzzbiat during the day from time to time.
Cavitrons are excellent so consider buying one in the future.
I listened to tow books on tape that I got for Christmas. The first is the Janet Evanovich Smokin' Seventeen which was very funny. That woman can write humor and fiction better than the President of the United States.
The second is the Glen Beck novel, Being George Washington. It was a fantastic look at how our country got started and how George Washington had to come to the rescue so many times.
I would recommend both books.
I still have a bunch to go and will start listening to them again when I hit the road in February.

No tournaments in the summer or fall.
I would fish more of the hot side tournaments but I HATE COLD WEATHER.
You find yourself standing in a bass boat freezing your fanny off and fishing 68* to 72* water, depending on how far from the reactor you are fishing. Just does not compute for me.

I fish a lot on the public side or used to anyway before the gas prices shot up, I would fish near dike 3, water temp around 60 to 66*
There were many times I could not figure out why I would do this to myself especially launching from either Anna point or from Sturgeons.
Even though the water was warm, air temp was not, it made one heck of a boat ride but the fishing was worth it.

The jig bite is getting pretty hot around here.As the water warms up a little, it will catch fire. Throw a flipping jig into any wood cover you can find, especially when it's next to deep water, a creek channel, or a hump. Let it sit for a while then VERY SLIGHTLY twitch it. Like just twitch the line, don't move the jig with the reel at all.

Hayden, pond fishing is fun but you really need to go out on a bass boat and hunt for the wild ones on lakes and rivers.
Just like going out with Mike hunting those catfish, but more challenging.

went to Amelia Lake for few hours sat morning...ended up with 2 small keepers. Water temp was 45 and windy. Lots of duck hunters out on the water too!! I went to Powhatan lakes yesterday evening to test new lure off the bank, caught nice size pike!

I fished some warm water Sunday. The water temp ranged from 70-55 degrees depending on which part of the Lake Anna hot side. Partner and I caught 10 tournament keepers out of 14 landed. The winning weight was in the 15# range for 5 bass. Sure was windy though.

All were caught in the main part of pond #2 mostly on the dike. I didn't go in the creek past the bridge except for the tourney start and weigh-in.
The winning weight came from pond #3.

I almost made it to that one but my friend and I opted to go to the shennandoah river to get his new electronics set up he and I installed this past weekend.
We did fish a little afterwards but no luck just a few bites, nice job though Wayne, Some day I hope to catch up with you and do a little fishing.

Wayne, have you fished Lake Pelham in Culpeper County?
This month's Bass Times had an article about the best places for bass and Lake Pelham was rated first with more 15+ inch bass than any other water in Virginia.
May have to consider traveling over to Culpeper County this summer and give the place a try.
Let us know if you hit the lake and if you catch anything exciting.

It's off 301 in Bowlinggreen down 619(chase st) then left on Smoot's rd. or 640 (Wrightsville rd) and stay straight on rd which switches over to Smoots rd. But for Smoot's or even Whites lake down off Perimeter till stop sign then a left. You will need an AP Hill fishing permit $20 for the year and must go through a background check. Also for those lakes you must call ahead of time to see if the open to fish due to training. Smoots (if map works) is two parts upper and lower, you will see the two parts on the map the upper part you have to through base to get too. Hopefully this helps and the maps show it's wherabouts for you. I live on 619 (chase st).

I'm also in the search to find me a gas motor for my jon boat and hopefully I can find a good decent deal within $500. All my wife's getting me and wonder why I don't buy a new?

no i didn't take a pic as i kinda think of them as trash fish so to say...they will hit anything that moves and rip up some baits! But they do make for some fun good cold water fishing if the bass are not hittin!

His electronics did wonderful, we had a little glitch in the drivers sonar screen due to the fact of some interference from another electronic source on the boat, it caused the sonar to bounce patterns instead of a clear picture, but we got it cleared up and working, that was the first time I have seen that river at Egypt bend with side scan and down scan technology...pretty cool stuff.
We may have fished roughly 45 min. but the wind and cold water absolutly froze my hands, I could not feel the spool under my thumb and could not control my pitching at all lol...I figured it was best to quit before I dropped my rod in the water.

I went out this afternoon to Lake Cherokee in Richmond and caught a small 1.5 pound largemouth on a chrome with blue back Rat-L-Trap.
First bass of the year.

Really, I don't care what people say regarding pond fishing - it's what I can access and at the same time have some fun. In the end, it's all fishing. Sayith what you will, don't bother me none.

I don't think this was said to bother you my friend....a jon boat wouldn't be bad idea, you will have more access to lots more water...throw the boat in back of a truck and be done with it. Can get one for about as much as one of your dobyns setups 
but if pond fishing is all you like to do , then pond fishing it is! Tear'em up!

wind chill was not too bad after about 10am, air temps started rising pretty good but still had jacket on from the wind. Water was right chilly though!
I think you will like having a small outboard on your boat...Ive found all my motors off craigs and have had good luck with them. Good Luck on your search!

Hayden, pond fishing is great. I love it.
But my suggestion is to go out with someone on THEIR bass boat and fish the lakes and rivers.
I would love to take you out this summer, but as I have said before, I need to meet your mother first. This is one of my two rules, the other being that you need to know how to swim.
Hopefully I will be taking Hookingem out more this summer as I prefish for some tournaments or go out for fun.
I will show you how to operate a bass boat and the trolling motor, too.
Give it some thought and let me know.

Getting a little jon boat changed my fishing completely. It opens up a lot of options and has really broadened my experience. You can find used jon boats for dirt cheap on craigslist. I got a little 10 footer that works great for me until I'm able to afford a bigger boat.

There is nothing wrong with what you do, anyone can see that just by looking at the fish you catch and post on here.
If I may voice my opinion, Sam has offered you a chance of a lifetime, this experience of fishing larger waters and getting out there is not just about fishing, sharing time with people and the interaction between friends is a big part of life brother and an opportunity few people get to enjoy.
You really should take this under consideration, you will most likely come away with a lot of great memories, the fishing is just a bonus for both of you.

Thank you Aluma-Bass!! Yea I went ahead and settle for 7.5hp 2 stroke engine Johnson from a guy in Goochland for $400. All I could find close enough in my search and that was just a little over an hour away. The guy had it set in this water fill drum for when I got there I can hear start and run. Foward and reverse both works. He gave me a metal six gallon tank but I will most likely replace that with plastic since last I knew metal was against the law at least what I was told years ago. He also was putting a pump line together but I told him I had that already and he was informing me that I should buy fuel filter to place on the line like he had on his. Man had motors everywhere that he's working on so he can get his look like 25' center console back on the bay for this year. He shown me his jon boat that he use the 7.5 hp for. The motor ran and sounded good. Congrats on the new motor! Have to get sometime soon and fish again. Definitely, replace the metal gas tank for plastic!

The warm weather the past couple of days didn't turn the fish on like I expected even though yesterday some areas at Sandy River had surface water temps over 50 degrees. Still caught a few though.
I didn't land any at Briery on Tuesday.
Sure was windy both days.

you dont need a boat. a ton of people bass fish from shore on large lakes. i caught my PB fishing from a dock at Smith Mountain Lake. Granted, you've caught bigger fish than me from your ponds you fish, but you dont need a boat to fish public waters. Sure, things are a little tougher from shore, but thats part of the fun, figuring out the mystery. its an added challenge to what the norm is for you.
Dont get me wrong, i'm not coming down on you, just offering my perspective. I love pond fishing, I would love to fish some of the ponds you do. but i also enjoy trying to figure out what the bass around that dock at SML want as well, and there are plenty swimming around the shoreline during the summer, sometimes i just sit there and watch them crush bluegill. sometimes they eat the bluegill, other times they just headbutt the bluegill to keep it away from their bed during the spawn. you can learn/observe a lot more and present yourself with some new challenges is all im trying to say...

I fished the Anna hot side yesterday with a couple of kids. We fished for about 4 hours and caught a total of 24 bass and 1 catfish--had missed hooksets on about a dozen others that hit. The weatherman lied about the partly cloudy to clear weather. It was cloudy, windy and COLD all day.

Awesome! I, too, fished SML on Sat...up in the Blackwater, near Magnum Point Marina. And like you, I got rained on most of the day

I live in Va Beach, and caught a 3lb chain pickerel last weekend (2-4-12)! i've been taking advantage of the warm days and fishing the sunny side of the lakes. ive noticed that the bite doesnt pick up until 10am some mornings though. its a slow day compared to a spring spawn, but worth the tug on the end of your line! I think swim baits and spinners are the trick right now since the weather is a little windy and the water is a little choppy, but if you find a lay down or two I like top water in these conditions as well.

Same here Ej. Me and my brother went out today on a neighborhood lake around 8:00 till 11:30 maybe and the same not even a bite.Tthe water temperature was 42 degrees this morning and by the end of us leaving it reached 44 degrees. I tried 2 different spinnerbaits, and a wacky worm. My brother tried wacky, T-rig, rattle trap, and couple of different crankbaits. It was nice to at least get out and try. I notice they removed some of the trees and brush in the lake that I fished during the fall, I wonder why?
The geese must of said the water was too cold as well they waited till 10 to get on the water lol and there were 2 beavers out and about on the lake.
I'm not sure when I will get back out but do, need, and haven't yet tested my motor on open water yet for my jonboat. I need to get over to AP Hill and renew my fishing permit.

Got back on the pond today and missed a 5er. She hit twice. Swung to early the first time didn't get a hook in her. Pitched back at her she hit and I moved her to the top and pop. Lure comes flying pass me. She flopped one good time so I could see her. Had two bites all her. Tight lines

My ff stopped giving me temp readings I have figured out its the ducer! So I am not sure what the actual reading is. If I had to guess, I'd say 40-45 tops. I've got a spot on the res that has been a jb magnet for the past 5 years, wish I could have gotten the big one I had hooked tho!

fished cold side of Anna Sat. in the VAO tourney. There were 4 sacks over 14 lbs. with the winning bag at 15.5lbs. We caught 3 fish, one being my best fish on Anna to date at 5.03 lbs. It was a nice day to be on the water!

For those wondering the water temp on the occoquan res. I took off out of bullrun the other day. Temps were 45 in the main body, and near the launch before we took out it was 48 in the late afternoon. That was right before the cold snap. It was really windy too.

I usually launch from bull run or fountainhead. I've got a buddy who's house backs up to the sandy run finger, but haven't launched from there yet. Hoping to explore that end a little this year. Fished the Shenandoah today at Riverton. Water was clear (4+ ft.) and 44-45 degrees. Caught 12 smallies with the best 5 between 11-12lbs. Big fish was 19in 3.75lbs. It was an awesome day to be on the river!

That is a scrounger jig. It puts a really nice wobble in your bait ie. fluke, grub, swimbait etc....

Went out to a pond yesterday after work for about 45 minutes just to get out. I caught one small bass on a shad spoon and UL rod/real, but that was the only hit I had. I still enjoyed it though. Does anybody know where I could find chain pickerel in the Richmond area? I've never caught one before and would love to try.

Hotrod, I've only tried a couple different brands, strike king and J&S by Koblinsky , man I've giving up a lot here, lol! 1/2 oz. long bill. Me no likey the strike king! I'm also looking for an alternative to the Koblinksy cause they are tough to get in a hurry. I do have a nice supply tho!

i was out yesterday night and i caught a 4 pounder on a 3" damiki hydra on a 1/4 ounce chartreuse jighead. i don't have a picture of it but it was a nice fish. i am just hoping that the weather gets a bit warmer and the fish start biting a bit more. i fished for about 2 1/2 hours before i even got a bite. has anyone been catching much in northern va? let me know

Thanks for sharing. Prior to reading this post I orderd some Strike Kings. After reading i looked up the J&S and they were going to be 5$+ each arter shipping. You arer not the first person who has not liked the Strike kings. Guess I will try them until I can try others. Thanks again for your input!

What size bill? I usually use the long bill, I think that imparts the most action. Depending on the forage, I have had the most success with a full size fluke, the new disco colors with a dipped chartreuse tail. Count it down to the fish with the rod at about 10o'clock position every once in a while imparting a twitch, slowly reeling line. Good luck, let us know how you do!

The Fluke is my favorite bait. The way I rig it gives off that darting, dieing look! Dont think the Strike king offers different bills like the J&S

Just a tip on the lighter heads, make sure you run the hook thru the upper part of the bait. Doing that will put more weight of the bait below the horizontal hook line and give the bait more wobble.

When it's open, Fountainhead regional park. When it's closed, lakeridge, bullrun, or hooes run. You should check out the Fountainhead bass club website. Buddy tx's, 6 fish limit. Some nice fish in that water. Ranked pretty high in Va.!

What's up guys been enjoying the great weather my self and see you guys have too. Wished the camera on my phone worked. I had my own classic on that friday at the pond I fish at. Caught about 10 pounds on three fish. With some small guys thrown in . Two on the trap one on plastic, missed a good one on the swim bait. Went out today after hitting the bps spring classic, got a new reel went out to check it out caught a 4 and a 1.5. Got about 12 days before the season starts, cleaning and re-spoiling the rods and reels, starting to put a game plan together. Can't wait talk to you guys later.

The Fom is on the 24th we are prefishing it as a club on the 10th. I just can't see myself throwing an A-rig. This is a jig year for me I am putting major focus on the jig this year. I hear so many people win on jigs and when a jig bite got me in the money during a tourney I was sold.

I personally am focusing on another year of improving my jig game and flipping.... (and shakey heads) but curious about VA people being allowed to use em.
To be frank my biggest concern is not people catching everything but me catching broken off a-rigs stuck in quality cover.

Arigs are legal in VA waters. Legal but with 2 hooks only in MD waters.

Jigs are my absolutely best way to fish, usually it's my first choice and if they hit it early and often, I will stay with it, Keep an open mind though Ej, Anna is a funny girl, especially this time of year, I suspect they will be a little deep yet and the jig will come in handy, a firetiger spoon/spinner/ jerk bait will also be something you want to have, just make sure if you throw the jb it's below the splits where the water is clearer and warmer, Pigeon creek and below are places I am going to concentrate on if I get the chance this Sunday.

I hit up chick lake last Sunday for a couple hours just to test out a buddy's boat. The water was around 53-54 degrees. I tossed around a black and blue jig for a hour with any success, but wasn't our first priority.
First time I've been bass fishing this year and the bug just bit me again. It's funny how I wanted to spend all my money on guns a week ago and I was reading up on firearm forums and since Sunday my priority's have changed back to fishing and this forum that I haven't visited for the past couple months.

Did I tell you guys that I went to my double secret pond and nailed an 8 pound lady full of eggs last week?
Three other guys on the Forum have fished the double sec ret pond and have caught 6 and 7 pounders so I believe this one was heavier since she had eggs.
Overall, caught 12 largemouth bass; missed four; and one crappie.
Not bad for two hours of fishing.
By the way, my home computer has a nasty virus and I have to replace the hard drive. Problem is that the virus is so agressive the guy who is working on the drive can't copy the information to save it.
On Friday, March 2nd, a computer professor from Virginia Tech is going to check it out to see if he can save the data. The guy dates the sister of the person trying to save the data for me.
I just have to go back to Macintosh. PCs suck big time.

It's gonna be another option. Makes me want to seriously look at the 110's tho!! 1 hour caught 4. The others were only about 11" nubs! They do cast nicely as well and looks to be a nice bait. I picked up 4 baits in assorted flavors. 2 suspend perfectly, 1 rises very slowly and the last one floats up a little quicker. Split rings on all 4 are solid, hooks are very sharp. My friend has the 110's he says they do an OK job but he was just not impressed with the performance, he is going to do a little tweeking to them and let me know.

I'm not sure if they will be the end all be all jb, the pointer has been such a good bait for me the past 8 years it's going to take a little more unseed them. Design and fishability are nice, just need some more time with them!

Time is all we have it seems, but the pointer has done well for me too.
I do not spend a whole lot of time with jb's, it's not that I don't have confidence in them, I feel the right opportunity just does not present itself often enough when I am fishing.
Usually it has to be a tough day for bites, I have a jb that they will generally follow all the way back to the boat, or close enough for me to get a good look at them, on days like that a different jb is all I will toss once I locate the curious little creatures...although I often wonder why they have never hit that particular jb instead of following it.

Ej, as far as tubes go, this is what I find effective around Va.
First I use a flipping tube around heavy cover and in stained water or high wind conditions, my favorite is blue/black 3" flipping tubes, you can use this anywhere you use a C-Rig all you need to do is drop shot it, yes I said drop shot, use a 4/0 hook, this will help with the hook up and make sure you get the fish back to the boat, I rig it only 2" down and leave the hook exposed.
Flipping is the most effective way I have found to fish this bait and you can go right behind a lot of people and find fish they miss, it's great around docks.

No Ej I do not peg the weight, I generally use 3 different size weights when doing this, first I will use a 4/0 hook tied with a Palomar knot 12 to 18 inches above the weight, I use a weight in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 oz, the lighter weights allow me to skip it under docks, the heavier weight allows me to maintain bottom contact when I need it in heavier cover or deeper water.
Skipping a rig like this takes time and practice and believe me I have had quite a time learning how to get this rig under docks but the rewards can be awesome.
My suggestion would be to use the 3/8 oz to begin with to get the feel for this rig, and get as close to the dock as possible in the deeper part of water, let the bait sink to the bottom, put a little slack in the line and twitch the bait WITHOUT moving the weight, if you do not get a strike after a twitch twitch pause twitch twich pause, slowly pick up your rod tip and move it a couple of feet and do it again and repeat until you are out of the strike zone.
Give it a try Ej if you get the chance, this is usually pretty productive if you are not getting bites, keep in mind this is usually very productive in open water too, just make sure you step up to a 1/2 oz weight.

I was speaking with a buddy of mine about SML. I am going and putting in at Penhook Saturday. He advised using a a spinner bait and slow roll it over the mouth of the cuts. I assume that this would work for most anything that can get deep enough. I am planning on using the spinners and give the BiteItBaits a try. Might even try a cranker or two.

. I went yesterday to Curtis to scout out some areas and caught a couple nice 2lb bass on a jerkbait, tomorrow is supposed to be perfect so I'm gonna go out and work the structure. Tomorrow I'm taking the wife and we are going to Caroline Pines lake. With this nice weather hopefully we can catch some bass. I got her the new BPS Extreme spinning combo for wacky on valentines day and I hope she loves it. This will be her first time using the new combo. I'm looking to having a great time with her tomorrow. We kind of got a scare today by the drs saying she might be going into a miscarriage so we had to setup another sonagram. Luckily we got one today to not mess up tomorrow and the news after that was much better. The radiologist said everything looks fine beside a few little things dealing with the wife's PCOS. Hopefully everything stays going well and we will have our second child. Friday the wife is going on a field trip with our 4 year old for school. **** luck to any going out tomorrow or this weekend!

Hey guys, new to the forum here. Haven't got out fishing yet this year, but hopefully soon. Mainly just fish rivers around the harrisonburg area which is where I live. Been to lake Anna and Smith Mountain a few times without much luck. But unfortunately getting rid of my boat so it's back to the rivers. Anybody In the Harrisonburg area been having much luck yet?

been fishing the past two mornings at tom brooks lake. Caught one dinky bass today and 2 pickerel yesterday. Missed multiple fish today, seemed like they wouldnt commit to the bait. Using a bush hog T-rigged. I used a spinner bait today for a couple cast had one bass hit it repeatedly but couldnt set the hook in time. Find it odd how one fish can be all over the spinner bait but then no other fish had any interest in it

Hitting a private lake this afternoon. Hopefully i will finally catch soemthing this year. Got four rigs setup, sone with a LC pointer JB, One with a shaky head, one with a wacky rig, one with a chatterbait. First change will probably be to a jig with craw trailer, second...... who knows, hopefully I wont have to change anything. Anyone got any lure suggestions(types)..

How big and deep is it?
The jb would be my first suggestion, but since it's going to be windy, I would take a top water too like a buzz bait, it's going to be overcast also, so darken up your colors.

pretty good size, got a dam about 30' max, around there. plenty of coves, some decent points, not to many under water drop offs, more bowl shaped than not

I would try some drop shot lures too then especially in the coves, off of the points I would try a fire tiger spinner or a small medium depth crank bait, like I said be open minded, it's overcast, at least it is here, so take some darker colors with ya.

Yes it is windy! Definitely picked up through out the day, lol. Well only fish for 3 1/2 to 4 hours. The wife was ready to go home. I manage 1 on a Bandit200 Tennessee Shad. I also lost one on this crank and had 1 following it. Nothing on wacky, or my Hot tip chartreuse spinnerbait. My wife was throwing mainly the white chatterbait and no hits. The depth finder said the water temp was 48 at right before 9 and got over 50 just not sure where the temp was when left.

Just got in from Lake Rooty landed 6 fish nothing under 2lb. Lost a 5lber at the sore trying to swing it up, that really killed me. Lost a couple others and seen some trailing the bait also. When the wind came it seems like it turned right on. Any one know why the fish eyes are red here. Never seen that on a large mouth?

3/8 Riverton (Doah)
Launched at 830 water was 47, greenish and about 3ft. vis. Started catching fish pretty much right away with best action between 10 and 12. We killed them today! Best 5 would go 20lbs! My best fish was a 5.5 largemouth. Buddies best fish a 4.5 smallmouth. Several 3lb smallies, a 2.5 smallie, and 2.25 lm. Tubes did most damage on Smallies but a 2.5 and 3 were caught on a Red Eye Shad rattle. Largemouth caught on a Tx. rigged Yum blue/grn. craw. Best day yet on the Doah. Water was 50 when we left.

I dont know if you can see it to well but all the bass has red/maroon eyes. Some were brighter than others,I just notice this today. I dont recall seeing other largemouth like this. They looked like demon fish. And yes i know rock bass/ goggle eye have red eyes.

The rock fish were most likely transfered there from another source, either purposely stocked or caught from another body of water and transfered there.

Nitro- She doesn't care for it, lol. She gotten so use to a baitcaster and trying to make a switch to spinning isn't working so smoothly. I tried to show her with my spinning gear how to cast with holding the line with pointer finger but she tries with all her fingers lol. I'm going to get her out in the yard and practice this week so she can get it down. She loved it just can't cast spinning gear, go figure!

Fished for the first time today since last October. Staying at a house across the street from Buggs Island while working near here and caught this white bass on the little cove we're on....
It was my first white bass and after reading sounds like a good size (big wide belly on the girl...) Caught on a Rapala original, shad color.

Had the tourney today on anna if was tough. Windy and cold most of the day, I stuck two for 3 and some change. It was a small club tourney so that was enough for a 4th place. We pay as a team and we took 1st. All came on shakey head and plastic. Water mid lake around 52. It was fun to get on the big waters again.

Got out on the Occ. Res. today from about 1pm-7:30. Launched from fountainhead. Water temps 53-55. My buddy landed 3 early on, with the best being just under 2lbs. I landed two solid fish before 3:30 when the crew teams took over the reservoir. These are the two in the attached photos. But the real fun began about 30 minutes b4 dark when we ran into a large school of shad being pounded near the surface!! They were not hitting top water, but right below. I added 4 more fish in the 2-4 lb. range with a hard body swim bait, and my buddy added two more swimming a fluke in this 30 minute frenzy. Great day on the reservoir, and it looks good all week too.

Oops. Here is the other pic. Also, how annoying are the crew teams to you other guys out there on the occ res? Can we start a petition to take away their bull horns, and make it so they can't practice 4 or 5 wide spanning across the entire reservoir? These coaches are teaching the kids some bad "water manners", and a couple of them sound like real a holes when they are out there screaming at the kids. It really is a nice peaceful reservoir when you don't have 6 crew coaches screaming into bullhorns within 1/4 mile of you.

Brick, yes the crew boats are annoying but it's something you have to deal with. Having fished the res for 20 years now, I realize they are not going anywhere and it's best to just deal with them in the best possible way and move on. My boat when going slow puts out more of a wake than on plane and they always yell when you go past them on plane, so I give them what they want, nose of the boat as high as possible with the biggest rollers I can throw!! I have been asked to go to the bank to settle matters before with overzealous crew royalty! They think they own the place yes, but I think the county knows where most of the money comes from when it comes down to it!! Nice fish and glad to see you got on a nice chew at the end of the day. Bet you forgot all about the rowers after that!!

LOL what happens when you reach 1000 for you to get excited, someday I will make it there, I just hope that out of that 1000 I have helped at least one.

I know the rowers aren't going anywhere. Brick, yes, they could be more respectful. Bottom line is, they don't care! Most of the rowers that are in the private clubs that go out of Sandy Run are very courteous. The high school and college teams are another matter entirely. They have had run of the land for so long, they don't think they have to answer to anyone. Giving them use of bullhorns only makes them overly obnoxious!! I had a guy so close to me I could see the bottom of his boat yelling at me on one!! I told him to put that *** thing down, I can hear you plenty well from here! The members of Fountainhead Bass Club are all to familiar with the crew teams and at the start of each season and each tx, we tell everyone to expect the unexpected from them and that in all the years we have been fishing there, they have never lodged a complaint against the club. Kill them with kindness!

Yeah Quan, I am looking forward to some huntsman action this week too. Brick and you are tearing it up on the res. Sounds like the are working well up the ledges there too.
As for the rowers...... I am no fan of their bullhorn either...... but they fall a very very distant third to the guys on jet skis in Pohick Bay (easily the worst) and the kayak people who paddle right between you and then shore when you are like 15- 20 yards from it. We should be allowed to peg em with a plastic worm or something.

First tx on Sunday, I have tomorrow off, I have soooo much stuff to do to be ready!! Might fish half day and use the other half to go thru tackle and such. I have a pretty good idea about what I want to do based on my last outing and reports from friends that have also been out during the week. Huntsman on the other hand has been a little disappointing! Only one fish from there this year. I did meet vaparrothead today and we exchanged stories about local spots! I'll let you all know how it goes if I get out tomorrow!

Does anyone know if any lilies are coming in yet? I thought I seen some of the bulbs popping up at this pond I fish and might try to buzzbait or spinnerbait them areas tomorrow.

I don't think they are yet, I have planted various lillies and grasses in my gold fish pond, I look at them before I make a lake trip so I know whats going on, the grasses are growing pretty fast, the lillies are just starting to sprout.

If there is enough cover then maybe, I would concentrate on flats 5 to 15 ft deep heading toward shallower water, I am not familure with the water you are fishing but if I were at Anna this weekend thats what I would be doing.
There are plenty of areas that have grass on the primary points as well as secondary points.
Don't be afraid to get off the banks and fish the deeper water.

Where I'm going is about a 90 acre pond and the deepest is 12'. The pond has structure trees on the side of bank and lilies through out. Where the lilies do grow,This brownish grass usually grows within them. Now the pond is pretty clear through out the middle of pond but does have drops from 3' to like 8' or so in spots. I'm thinking of trying cranks out there unless buzzbaits work since it's post to be partly cloudy and 76 degrees. If buzzbaits don't I'll just go to my spinners and chatters. I'm also going to jig the trees. I wouldn't mid trying a spook like lure if topwater is on.

I would definately fish the drop off's or dips, the jig would be a bruised banana color with a green pumpkin trailer or bama rage tail craw, and spinners would be grey/white or light blue/white with a chartuse trailer fished right off the bottom of even making contact with the bottom, buzz baits would be black if it is overcast.
Thats just me wishing I was fishing though lol.

I don't have any banana color jigs but do have green pumpkin trailers. Most of mine are black and blue and do have 1 green pumpkin but I think that is grass jig so not sure how it will handle trees or wood. Far as spinners and the buzz I got those colors you mentioned.

I saw some on deep beds yesterday with my electronics and a lot of bass were in the 3'-5' depths. I caught a bunch of bass Wed and yesterday. The water temp was in the mid 60's in the afternoon.

Water visibility is about 3"-5" and the bass I saw and caught on beds were in 4'-5' depths. I saw them with Humminbird Side Imaging.

Today did not go accordingly to plan or even go well. Got up at 6:00 am and when got to Smoots I help out a fellow fisherman there that was with his wife. His trolling motor wouldn't unlocked, so I out my Rem oil(only oil I had) he sprayed it and we finally got it unlocked. Nice couple. Put tools away, jumped in car, backed car down and dropped boat in the water. Went to pull out, dead battery. I've been having problems with this battery ever since I bought it a week ago. Finally got it to start after jumping off one of my boat batteries. Well car started and again went to pull out car is stuck. Just spinning off the gravel rocks they put down. Grrr. No matter what I tried no luck. I just left car on ramp and fish till my buddy came about an hour later. No hits and time to get car out as he pulled up. My car tires was like slicks after I got home so my wife took car to get new tires. What a morning!

When the water is cold, try crawfish cranks that go 8-10 feet, the fish are more aggressive towards the crayfish cranks than the regular fish cranks.
And I wouldn't count out frogs, if there is another cold snap, try going out the morning after the cold snap, the bass go crazy on frogs then.

Hit the local Northern Virginia pond in Reston today and it was a "tale of two ponds." It started off pretty slow with just a couple of small fish, but then it was like someone turned on a light switch, and I had a nice bass on just about every-other cast. Mostly hitting on a spinner-bait (white/red and red) and nothing on soft plastics. They were all about 15 yards off of the bank, just where the water starts to get shallow at about 4 feet. Then, about 30 minutes later, the switch got flipped again and nothing for the next hour, so I packed it in. I noticed the fish are VERY thin in my local pond -- not sure if it's from a problem or just a lack of minnows over the winter.

My girl and i passed y'all, we were lake hopping, went to the city docks in fredericksburg, smith lake, aquia harbour and lunga. Got several bites including some hits on a frog. But no fish caught. Going out again tomorrow.

Thanks Troy. We did ok in the tx today, 16.09. Winners just slayed them! Two bags over 26 and 4 others over 20. Still impressive for our 6 fish limit for buddy tx's! 3 fish over 6lbs with the biggest at 6.66 lbs. Partner and I each missed big fish that would have put us over 20lbs. Overall it was a fun day for the first tx of the year!

It may cause a few to spawn a little early, but I look for the weather to make more of them stage a little sooner, the biggest thing I think is going to have an impact on is the bait fish, not many have been killed off this past winter so the fishing may be a little more difficult to develop a consistancy, I think it is just going to make you fish a lot smarter this year than in the past couple of years.

Seeing some beds recently, but no bass on them yet. The males are moving up and fanning out, then moving off for a while. A couple fish have spawned in most of my waters already. Kind of wierd funk right now. Got a couple on a 3:16 FS gill floater the other day and a sissy rising son.

Hit a private pond/lake on Sunday. caught about 20 some odd small ones. Nothing of any size really , largest maybe 2 lbs. Mainly using purple/blue senkos, wacky rigged, and tossing them right up to steep bank with a decent dropoff in the water then twitching them back to the boat. Got one on a pointer jerk bait, and one on a jig with a cayfish rage tail as a trailer. Was sitting off a point checking out the water(it was really clear) watching the smaller fish moving around and two bigguns swam past the boat out of the deep and into the shallower area. I do believe they are definitly on the move. Also tried using smaller square bill clackin rap red/black, 3" bluegill pointer jerk bait and swim baits. not one fish on those

Saw several crappie on the beds Saturday, Which usually spawn first. Every bluegill and bass under 12'' seemed to be right on the bank. Bigger fish were in a funk and NOT active at all.

What's up guys been a few days since I was on. Been a busy month, had two tourneys one on anna and the second on buggs. Buggs is on fire right now me and my boater took 1st and 3rd, for the regions first tournament. Him 1st me 3rd my big tournament is this sat on Anna. Prefished yesterday and love is in the air or water. Bad feeling that these fish are in that act of spawning. Never had to site fish for a tourney, hope Anna is not where I cut my teeth. As a co not looking forward,but we are a team. If anyone got some ideas on clear, deep water bed fishing send me some. To everyone on the tread enjoying the stories, keep em coming.

Anna is going to be tough,really tough in the upcoming weeks, lots of things happening, I think you should keep an open mind though Ej.
Good luck fishing deep beds, your gonna have to put it right in front of them and smack them in the nose with it.
Just a suggestion if that ain't working for ya, head up Anna and fish up toward Christopher Run, and places farther north, I would look for a duck blind where the old river splits and start there, be careful the water gets shallow and stays shallow in a hurry when you get close to there.

Just back from fishing Bowies pond. The water was 65 to 64 degrees. With the perfect cloudy day I thought I would give the buzzbait a try. I landed a small pickerel and lost a 2lb bass the boat. I also landed a small bass on wacky. The lilies are coming in nice at Bowie so I even tried some frogs just couldn't seem to land any. They was hitting the frog just none hooked. I have to repair my Spro since I think a pickerel or bowfin did hit. It has a cut in the frog. How can you repair this? Just super glue?

As far as repairing your spro, super glue will do the trick, just let it air for a couple of days so the smell goes away.
Now you say you are missing them on the spro, or missing them with all of your frogs?
Are the fish too small or are you just getting excited and not waiting for the rod to load up?
Or are they missing the frog all together?

It's I'm not even sure I'm doing the let them take it then set but nothing there, lol. Some are miss like my Dep's frog which acts like a buzzbait. i guess it's just one of those days. Caught both of them at Lucky Island on the south side of the south island. Casting right on the "line" where the drop off is and running it parallel to the shore. Caught a few more but not of that size. All on the 1.5 Chart. Black Back.

Fished the occoquan river right under the dam. I caught several bass around 12", but nothing of size. Most were caught on soft plastics. Darker colors were working well. I heard the stripes were moving up in the river early, but they are not packed in there yet.

Went to Caroline Pines lake today from 6:30 to 1:00. I manage 8 bass and 1 crappie. 6 of the bass and the crappie came off a bandit200. Other 2 bass came off wacky. I lost a 2-3lber right at the boat and I had a monster bass on Rapala Skitterwalk but lost that one too as soon as I seen the body.
Snakes are out!! About 4'-5' long.

Catfish are everywhere right now at occ res. Caught another 4-5lber today. With water temp at 72 up in the coves, 70 main lake and the new moon last night bass should be starting the spawn. We ended up with 7 LMB all around 3lbs flippin and pitchin worms and jigs. My good ol' eagle ff died on me today after 6 years of good use. Now lost in a huge market for a new model

Mostly a KVD 2.5 Squarebill Sexy Shad slow cranked through the flats. I use a "search" pattern if I can see them or not. Just throw long and keep the bait in the water as long as possible. The big-un was enticed off the bed by a BiteItBaits Bed Bandit in watermelon red on a drop shot. It refused to bit anything else.

My Wife was feeling a bit on the exhausted side so we passed on Church...I went out in the rain and caught 5... After 5 in the boat I left. Soaked but happy.

Well I didn't get to fish Anna this past weekend as I had hoped but some really AWESOME news is my best friend and another really great friend fished Anna in the Elite Series, they placed 18th to start the season, missed some good ones but he managed to get big fish. 7.09 lbs
As much as it pains me to miss the tourny's this year, I could not be happier for my friends.

What a cold morning. I went from 7 to 1. The water temp was 54 degrees and reach 60. Visibility seemed about 2'. I managed 3 at the lake. 2 bass 1 crappie. The crappie was bigger than the bass. At other lake 1 bass and 1 pickerel. I almost fell in, lol. I lost my balanced and dropping my cranking setup with my whole right arm went in the water as I hit the deck. Luckily the water was only 2' and got my rod back. It's a Curado 200E5 and 7' M-MF Crucial. I didn't want to lose that. I also broke my favorite Bandit200, the Tennessee shad and lost a just bought War Eagle spinnerbait.
WHAT A DAY!!
The crappie was the best catch of the day for a little guy himself.

Don't worry endless, One time my dog chewed up a bandit crank bait until it had several major cracks in it. I put gorilla glue along the cracks until it foamed out of it, caught more fish on it after that, I called it my ugly crank.

Yep this lake is a residential lake that I fish. I caught the one in my avatar a 5lb on wacky off a point, a 6.4lb on a buzzbait, and 3.8lb on a crank. Those three are the best I've done there so far. The banks are covered in beaver,fallen branches practically around the whole lake. The deeper side of the lake drops like 10' off bank to 14' and 18' in spots. Usually and lately I've been cranking there. It's the only thing that's been working but I have wacky the banks when I can get pass the fallen branches. Too many times I got hung up. I also buzzbait the shallow areas and dark coves. That's how I landed the 6.4 in a shadow cove near a fallen branch. Maybe in 5'-6' of water on the buzzbait. I also lost a monster in the shallows fishing over an fallen tree with me Rapala Skitterwalk.
I more glad I got setup back than injured lol.

I went out with Peyton yesterday to Smith Mountain Lake...the day started a little cool, but sunny, and it quickly warmed up. The water temps were in the mid-60's, even though we had a LOT of rain over the wkend. The water was still stained (we were at the mouth of Gills Creek), but there wasn't a lot of debris floating around thankfully.
We managed to catch probably a dozen fish or so, mostly on cranks and one on a spinnerbait. However, we did catch several small stripers, incl my very first one on the Alabama rig!
All of the bass came in shallow water, on rock, with the exception of the spinnerbait bass, which was off a laydown in about 12-15 of water. The stripers came in open water, off one side of a point. Peyton caught his on a small crankbait (Bluegill pattern by LiveTarget), and as I mentioned my two were on the 'bama rig (blue pearl swimming Flukes...and I dyed 3 of the paddletails in Chartreuse)

Have you tried spinners in and around those beaver hutts and wood? try it like I suggested, just like your fishing a jig, make sure its got some reds and browns in it too, don't be afraid to let it sit on the wood, give it a few seconds to rest there then raise it up and let it fall again, I like a 3/8oz, 3 willow bladded hawg caller for doing this, it gives the fall some really great action.
Also don't be afraid to make it bump off of things, the more you make it change direction the more reaction you will get.

I tried a colorado spinner and lost it doing this trying to jig it. I have tried 3/8 hot tip Chartreuse and shimmer blue with no luck still. I even went bigger to a 1/2 Blue Herring with nothing either. Lately wacky worm doesn't even work, just my Bandit! lol.

I went out for 2 hours yesterday around noon till 2 and I only landed one bass on a Bandit200 bluegill. I think I must disturbed something in the lilies but it might been a beaver. I heard a big splash and saw this ripple taking off.

Once the lightning started to get close I hauled my fanny out of there.
Remember, lightning can strike for up to 5 miles from the storm so don't take any chances.

been fishing a decent amount recently... fished a club tournament two weeks ago on claytor lake... two days of prefishing included a 4.5 lb smallie, a 3.5 largemouth and a number of fish in the 2.5 lb class range. come tournament day it rained all day and the water muddied up.. was throwing hair jigs mainly and this obviously was not the conditions for them... only caught two small keepers during the tournament... a very bad day. Floated the new river yesterday from peppers ferry to whitethorne. Water was really clear for this time of year, it is usually alot more murky ( in my opinion making for alot better fishing) Only caught 5 smallmouth all day with the biggest only going around 14 inches. For a river known to produce 50 fish days and 6 lbers, it didnt live up to its billing that day. My buddy who i floated with went back to where we launched from today and cast a ripple shad into the rapids above it and caught two really nice smallies ( 17-18 inches) just from the bank... funny how one day can change the fishing so much in both the aforementioned cases.

I'm too stupid to stop fishing, I was out on the Potomac during hurricane Irene hauling in bass left and right in my kayak. I fish rainstorms whenever they pop up. I even have a couple rods with electric tape grips. I've had a couple close calls, but that electric tape on my rod saved me.

electric taped grips, thats genius. I Always heard hats made of aluminum foil were the best!!

I went to caroline pines today from 6:30-10:30. The water temp was 55 to 58 when I left. I manage 5 on a Bandit 300 Tennessee shad. Nothing bigger than a pound. I also landed a 5lb on wacky.My bow mount trolling broke on me so I got off the water and went home.

Went up to SML yesterday. Blackwater area was a it murky... 3-4 ft vis. Decided to head over to the Dam. Water went from green to blue in the deep. Looked nice. Went into some coves... there were literally hundreds of LM bass schooling. None would bite. Did snag a few smallies with a Chartreuse Black Back. It was just amazing all the bass in these coves. The visibility was about 15 feet, too. WOW!

We were also out at SML yesterday fished around Lucky island caught couple decent bass on drop-shot...all around the smaller island we seen large females both smallie and large staging looking for nest spots as they would just circle a 6ft radius, but have not made beds yet from what i could tell. They would not bite either we stayed for a while trying to get one to bite...no interest! We went to dam area water was a clear blue and could easily see 15ft down if not more in some spots, amazing! Then we went back to some back coves near rt 122...nice day on the water...wind picked up on main lake pretty good. We ended up with handful of bass...nothing picture worthy. Didn't get to hang no smallies or stripers. Just awesome to be out on this lake was best part!

Zoff, no didn't see the schools of bass i was just mainly cruising the dam area. It was my brothers 1st time out on the lake and i wanted to show him dam side bf we headed back in. He was amazed as we just looked down into water at a idle speed as we coasted along the main lake banks near dam. He could not believe how deep/clear it was! We did see some birds crashing the water near rt 122 but as soon as we got with in 100yrds of them the birds stopped. I can see how that lake could be hard to fish when the sun is straight up and water is calm bc its so clear.

Been fishing outta Occoquan River right off the Potomac. The action has been unbelievable until the coldfront late-night. Did manage a few males today all who had bloody mouths. A few other fish that have been boated include 2 nice perch, 2 baby striped bass and a 15lb snakehead. I did hook into a monster female that snapped my line at the boat. Felt like a log, put up an amazing fight. Her mouth was the closest to a bucket mouth I have ever seen. I would guess she was easily in the double digits. I have and will be on the hunt for her again.

i fished for ~4-5 hours on occoquan friday afternoon out of fountainhead and got owned. very frustrating day. had a few bites from small bass on senkos wacky rigged, but could not figure out what the larger ones were biting on. i went upstream past the dam and pretty much worked the whole north shoreline starting at the huge bend. i tried some suspending jerkbaits too and texas rigged worms(from the advice of a guy who had been fishing out earlier) without the weight to no luck.

Frog bite is on big time in Virginia Beach right now. Averaging around 10 hits each time I go out. Other than that, fish are keeping close to cover. I fished the Newport News reservoir lately and the fish I caught were on Missle Bait's D Bomb. I was hitting them off trees and got most hits on the initial drop.

Our club fished Diascund, my first time there! Big lake for electric only! We finished 2nd with just under 10lbs, 1st had 12lbs. We didn't catch much in the morning till i realized the fish were still on beds, then it was on! 4 outta 5 keepers came off beds! It was a fun day! Biggest fish of the tourney weighed was about 4.5lbs by another team.

Mike W, the fish on the res are in full lovin' mode!! you need to look in the creeks and guts and look for the beds. I was out Saturday and must have seen 30 beds in all areas. Some had fish locked on, others were "in the act!" If you find vacant beds or beds with only the male, be assured the girls are lurking nearby. It is a tricky time out there right now, I've never done very well with spawners but you can catch them, they just have to be in the right mode, not mood! You should be able to tell if the bedders will bite within the first few minutes you locate and cast to them. Look for aggressive behavior toward your bait, are they chasing away small blugill, will they nose down and eyeball your offering?? If this is the case, it's just a matter of finding the trigger, bait, retrieve, wait time! It's all a brilliantly devised puzzle laid out by mother nature with an awesome backdrop of springtime!

Thanks for the tips! The fish that I could see weren't being very aggressive to what I was throwing at them, yet not more than a few feet away I saw one large bass go completely vertical almost a foot out of the water, as well as another bass come up and swallow an injured perch. quite the sight.
Having done some more research on bass beds and what to look for as well, hopefully I can get back out there before they start moving back to the deeper water.

You will have plenty of opportunities with the full moon and another wave of spawners. Water came back up to full pool with the rain this week, the fish you did find on beds may be a little more difficult to spot but they are still there and the water didn't get very dirty. Fished a 10 acre pond in Goochland last week. Day started out great, landing about 20 smaller bass in the first hour...guy fishing with me picked up about 5 in that time. I caught almost the entirety of them off of poppers before eventually pulling a few off of some senkos.
Fished for bout 3-4 hours...between the two of us we cleared 50 fish. All smaller, biggest only bout 2lbs. I did latch into a BIG ONE though. Got him to the boat...saw his belly come up when he went parallel with the boat...would have been the biggest fish I've ever landed, so it was appropriate that he somehow tossed the hook a foot from the boat.
Just got my new kayak last week...so I'm looking to tear up some waters if this weather ever breaks! Wanted to hit Swift Creek Res today, wish the outside temp would wake up.

4.8 on wacky at Caroline pines today. The water temp said 77 degrees. Caught 5 today this was the biggest. All came in the shallows fishing drops on wacky. Bama Bug was the color. The 4.8 came off a stump I seen near the bank. I lost several on Ragetail Toads and one on a crack. Lost another possible 4lb on wacky and few other small ones. I fished the three lakes in Caroline Pines.

Hey All, this is KLUGMO. I live on Lake Louisa. Sat. I caught 12 lgm. bass and 1 15" crappie.
Sun. morn caught a 6.6 lb lgm. at picnic area behind my house. Wonderful fishing lake if you can
get off it before the yankers come out at 9:00am.
I will be retiring in a year or so and want to move to a lake on the east coast with GREAT
striper, lgm. bass and big cats and over 18-20,000 acres. I know Smith Mountain comes to
mind but cant move there because wifes family lives there. (dont ask)
I need a replica of that lake on east coast somewhere. Lake Norman is great but the
fishing there is declining with real oxygen problems. Fish kills of 7,000 in recent years.

Leesville Lake today! Bite was on but nothing over 3 pounds. About 15 or so (stopped counting at 10) LM on a mix of Storm Kickin' Shad, 2.5 and 1.5 Squarebill, Rage Craws, and drop shot... a catfish on a Rage Craw... and a little 4" pumpkinseed that hit my 1.5 KVD Chartreuse Black Back.
Water still trashy as all get out. Boat is filthy and I don't have time to wash it before SML tomorrow.
BTW... nobody to fish with tomorrow. Anybody interested?

Put 40 live Louisiana crawfish into my double secret pond. They went into the grass so they have a chance to make it and add another snack item for the bass.
Speaking of bass, I caught over 20, ranging from dinks to one four pounder and two three pounders.
They hit everything other than a buzzbait. They would hit my frog but no interest in the buzzbait.
All fish were returned healthy back into the pond so they will be there for future fishing adventures.
It was nice to finally wet a line and catch some bass.
Crawfish boil tomorrow so I will gouge myself like a bass on wonderful Louisiana crawfish!

Oh and a minor fishing report...Given up on bass fishing for now at my spot on Buggs. Been back and forth on good days for sunfish(bait) and catfish. One 12 and one 15 lb catfish within 10 minutes of each other one day and otherwise 5 lbs has been our normal.
Started my boat this past weekend, but have had zero time to get out on the water. Hoping to do so in the next couple of weeks. Working out of town is a pain, but after 20 months on this project we're about done.

I've been catching some nice bass lately on frogs and I was killing some time fishing in a neighborhood pond and caught around a 10 pounder (the second and third picture) on a Lake Fork Magic Shad. No one was with me so I had to do the awkward self picture. I've been fishing frogs and swimbaits a lot lately and I've been successful. Bait balls are appearing and bass are blowing them up. Locate the shad right now and you're good to go.

Oh and the first picture was pretty much taken to prove the Lake Fork frog trailer hooks work. It was the only thing that hooked that bass and I've had that happen a few times. Definitely improves hook up ratio.

That is a big fish and a very nice job you did catching it, but to be polite about it, it does not look to be a 10 lb fish, I remember my first big bass of good size, and I am not saying that one is your first big one, but I thought it to be much bigger than it really was, and well, lets just say there are some critics that will make you feel small.
Do yourself a favor and get a scale, that way you take out the guess work.

caught this five pounder yesterday morning on a kvd 2.5 sexy shad at smith mountain lake. It looks like something bigger tried to eat it. You can see the marks on both sides. Had to have been something huge, like a flathead or something.

I think there are some pretty big cats in that place, some that could swallow a VW bug, lol, I talked to an underwater welder and has dove SML, they do not go down without a speargun escort he tells me, the first time he dove there he said he came straight back up before he reached his destination for inspection.
Wether or not thats the truth, who knows, but as big and deep as that place is and by looking at your fish, it looks to be plauseable.

there are some big flatheads in smith mountain lake. probably 6 years ago i was fishing off a dock with an old zebco 33 before i got heavily into fishing and hooked into one that had to go 40+ lbs. i got it to the surface, it went into a death roll and snapped my 8lb line lol...
it could have also been a big musky that tried to eat that bass, theyre in there, i caught a fingerling once...

But looking at the markings they are more rounded like a cat fish mouth, I would think if a large muskey had a hold of it there would be no tail at all or much more damage to the fish.

I have heard stories about 8 foot cats. one nght my friend and I were bass fishing with topwater baits and he caught a 3 foot long catfish because he landed it and i held it up to my waist and its tail was touching the boat and i'm 6'3".

Those people who run lines like that are just trying to eat and would probably still eat a dead one. They also have the same rights to the fish that you do....

i'm definitely not one to say my fish is bigger than it was. i have one ove those rapala digital scales you can buy at walmart and it read 5lb 2oz and it was 20 inches long. and i'd say before she laid her eggs she was atleast 5 and a half.On 5/15/2012 at 9:16 AM, quanjig said:Nice fish and that is some weird scaring around the middle. Fishing for catfish today off the dock on Buggs. Caught one 6 lb cat that's in the freezer now.
Saw/heard a splash underneath a bush in about 2 - 3' of water and picked up my bass rod I had with me. Put on a 4" green pumpkin senko and threw underneath the bush. BAM! Caught this 2lber. Put up a fun fight and kept going airborne.

i agree that someone had the right to put those lines there, and it probabaly is wrong to cut them. but if someone is clearly neglecting them as in the case of a giant dead flathead, then thats just as wrong. in the case described it seemed like neglect

Delivered somethings to eat from Martin's this morning to the farm who had surgery and owns the double secret pond and did some fishing, too.
Caught three big ones. I don't usually weigh my fish but these were the big ladies that live in the pond.
Added about 20 more to the list, with three one and two pounders and the rest dinks.
Started late (7:30) and the topwater bite was gone and the bass headed to deeper water in the middle of the pond. finished at 11 as I had to go home, get sweet and attend a band performance of an 8th grader at St. Michael's.
What was interesting was that the first big lady I caught followed the Carolina rig lizard all the way to the bank and she hit it about two feet from the shoreline when I started to pull the lizard out of the water.
The others were caught on a Chatterbait and a wacky Senko.
I hope the crawfish I put in the pond two weeks ago are still doing fine in all the grass and wood. Time will tell.

That is a big fish and a very nice job you did catching it, but to be polite about it, it does not look to be a 10 lb fish, I remember my first big bass of good size, and I am not saying that one is your first big one, but I thought it to be much bigger than it really was, and well, lets just say there are some critics that will make you feel small.
Do yourself a favor and get a scale, that way you take out the guess work.

Haha I know I need a scale but I know it doesn't seem big in the picture but it was around 26 or 27 inches with a sizable girth to it. I have caught plenty of 6,7, and 8 pounders that have been weighed and my previous big bass was 9.5 which was also weighed before I lost my scale. The other day my friend caught a 7 pounder that I guessed almost spot on before he weighed it with his electric scale. I can look at fish and put a good estimate on them within ounces. Trust me I know it seems like I'm a teenager who just gets over excited and over estimates fish but I'm not the person to do that honestly. If someone was with me to take a better picture you would probably say differently. I'm not insulted at all because I know so many people that day a 3 pound bass is 5 or 6 and it annoys me, that's why I don't do it haha. Thanks for the constructive criticism and yes I will definitely purchase a scale soon. Just haven't felt like spending money on a nice one lately

I finally had some good fishing on Leesville Lake. Got in 5 hours and top 5 went 9lb 2oz.. In all honesty... only caught 5... all on a Caffeine Shad in Smokey Shad. Back out in the morning to Leesville and then catfishing Saturday in the Staunton.

Not bad. Where I fish, we seldom catch anything other than blues and channels. Maybe, in 20 years, I have caught 2 flatheads which suits me just fine as I do not like the taste of the "mud-cat". As for where... that's for me to know and for you to... just kidding. I fish on my family's farm just down river (about 3 miles) from Altavista. My parents live here... I built 6 years ago and my brother is getting ready to build... so, I would say it IS a family farm. lol Two ponds and the river. Yep, I finanlly fished lately.

No more fishing for a while as daughter-in-law is going to deliver grandaugher very soon and we will have my grandog and grandson with us until she can go home and get set up for the baby.
Three big ones over 5-pounds each are enough for now until I can head back to the double secret pond or get the boat back on the water.

Same here, I have been so busy with work, I have not been in over a year, Friday the 1st will be my first time on the water, I am taking my youngest daughter to a Friday night tournament over at Anna, and like you I am pretty excited too !!

I have wanted to fish SML for a long time, and Claytor too, I finally have the chance to go to Claytor mid june, going to spend a week there, but I hope to visit SML this summer or fall.

i find SML is just such a relaxing place. but to be honest in the summer, that place is a madhouse everyday. so many boats and jetskis racing around, sometimes the water looks like its boiling. if i were you, id plan for the fall, after Labor Day atleast. the traffic slows down a lot then, plus it may increase your chances of running up on some schooling stripers. never been to Claytor or Anna though. i usually end up at SML because my aunt and uncle have a house on the lake there...

Just got my all-time personal best from my local NOVA pond... see the thread linked below for a pic. Black/Blue Flake Senko on an light action rod, expecting to catch the usual 1-2lb fish. She broke the line in heavy weeds, and I jumped in and grabbed the line without even thinking and fought her the last 20 yards with my bare hands. Most exciting day of fishing I've had this year in Northern Virginia. She came in at 7 lbs, 1 oz according to my little digital scale.

Leesville ALL day today. Me and my bud got about 15 or so. 9 of them over 3 pounds each. Started on cranks... 1.5 KVD Chartreuse Blackback... up in Old Woman's Creek. While there we switched to Green Pumpkin Carolina Rig and just knocked the fire out of them. Big surge because of the dams letting in and out water shut the bite off. We moved to some coves and started burning them up with (Me) a Caffeine Smokey Shad and (Him) a white Zoom fluke in the natural cover and both of us with wacky Sinkos around the docks. Color didn't seem to matter so long as it was dark colored. He used black and I used a dark brown/orange craw color. Lots of fish guarding fry in the natural cover. Big females in the deep areas around the docks. Going to back off the bass for a day and catfish tomorrow evening.

She and i were the 1st two to hit the lake this mornin'(6am) and the 1st two to land some Bass Everyone else was landin' Bluegills... I love taking my girls fishing too, one of the first times I had ever had my youngest daughter on the boat she pulled in a 5lb striper on light tackle, using a stinking live worm for goodness sake, man I was just waiting for something to go SNAP !!! lol.
There is no better time to be a dad than the times when they catch their first fish, no matter how big or small, the look on their face and the few and far between smiles says it all, and we get a moment to last forever.

Fish in Virginia beach have been schooling up on bait balls. I've been doing really well on Lake Forkagic Shads fishing them weightless on a 4/0 wide gap through the bait balls. I've been catching 1-3 fish off each bait ball pretty much

speaking of Back bay, me and my GF went out yesterday out on muddy creek road and fished the inlet with the overpass. were still new to freshwater fishing, been doing saltwater my whole life. But here was our only catch of the day ( had a few bites but couldnt get it to hook, tips anyone??)

Sorry the fish was dirty, it was flopping around in the dirt...but catch n release. Any tips on some good spots in Va. Beach, Chesapeake? I been to bobs fishing hole a few times and fished from the docks and got skunked. Fished the pond n canals in the NWR park, but got only small crappie on minnows. Any good neighborhood lakes or rivers in va beach? bobs fishing hole and backbay is quite a drive.

my heart goes out to you if all you are fishing is Burke. You ever consider Beaverdam? It's as nasty as Burke the first few times you try it but it gets better. Burke on the other hand, after fishing it 3 times with very few fish each time, and the pressure fishing that was there, i got bored real quick. If you want tips on fishing Burke, PM quanjig and he may give you some pointers. The lake is apparently at its best once they close the main launch ramp in the fall. But by no means do i know what's happening out there. Beaverdam, while i stunk it up the first few times i went, it was less pressure and was beautiful. That kept me coming and i have never looked back since. Other guys know Mercer and the other smaller lakes around there and hopefully they chime in for you. Northern VA is very tough to fish and the fishing only seems to get real good on the Occoquan and Potomac. They are both forgiving year round while other lakes are contingent upon the season.

No I haven't been able to get out to back bay this year yet but I heard the city just stocked it with I think 1500 bass. That number could be wrong but I did well in there last year so it's definitely worth a try. And yes it is definitely making a good comeback

spent last weekend fishing at SML. Didnt really get to fish as much as i wanted. My uncle has a house on the lake there and decided to have someone come do some work to his dock, where i fish from by day. Typically theres lots of nice bass swimming around the dock and in this cove. I couldve fished from the actual shoreline but didnt want to deal with the trees and shrubbery. but between the pressure washing, building a small addition to the walkway on the dock, and staining the dock(which took three friggin days) i didnt get my usual fishing time in for bass, as i typically fish for cats and whatever else wants to bite at night. I probably would have never went if i knew he was having all that done this weekend. but atleast i did get some good rest and relaxation, which was much needed and a mental refresher. So while things werent ideal to me, i still managed a variety of fish. the main problem being they were all small. im not sure i caught a fish of any kind over 12 inches in 4 days of fishing. just wasnt my weekend.
I did manage to pick up a few bass around the dock when i did get the chance to use it, including my first ever bass on a jitterbug, the rest came on various soft plastics. never had any luck on jitterbugs before though. also threw around a rebel tad fry on my lightweight setup and caught some bluegill and white perch. by night time the dock was dry and i was able to atleast get my nightly catfishing in when i visit there. the problem was the size of the fish, i normally catch a truck load of 3lb channel cats every memorial day weekend, i couldnt even get a 1lber this weekend. also caught a couple small flatheads.
also went out on the boat two evenings with my uncle. after trolling around for striper with no luck we decided to cast some shorelines he has had luck on before this time of year. after a few casts he gave up and i continued fishing. managed to pull in a 1/2lb or so bass and quickly threw it back. next cast my strike king 5xd crank went over a tree limb hanging out over the water and was hanging there. i told my uncle watch out im bout to give it a jerk. next thing i know i got the front treble stuck through my shirt, jeans, and in my leg, the rear treble was in my shirt and hooked into the back pocket of my jeans. luckily i was barely skin hooked and got the trebles out. avoided potential disaster there. while ripping the bait out of my back pocket and shirt the treble broke. decided to tie on a red eye shad, chrome with black back. a few casts and next thing i know my rod separates(2-piece rod, maybe loosened from yanking the crankbait from the tree) and the top part goes flying down my line through the air and into the lake, a couple quick cuss words and i start reeling in fast as i dont want my rod getting caught up in the downed trees along the banks there. my uncle looks at me and says, dont catch no fish like that. well, turns out i reel in a small striper that i couldnt even feel fight because of the rod down on the line. little guy mustve been real hungry. had trouble getting the treble hooks out of his lips/mouth and by the time i did he was a floater, which sucks because this was one pretty little fish and couldve been a nice trophy or meal someday in a few years. anyways, being frustrated i told my uncle lets just go in, as it was about 10pm. next evening out on the boat resulted in a skunk.
so while the fishing wasnt great for me, i did get out on the water. and i did get to relax a few days without the worries of everyday life at work and home. i still had fun, but cant remember ever having such misadventures on a fishing trip. all the fish being small is what bothered me the most though lol. biggest fish of the weekend belonged to my 3 year old niece Zoey who caught a 15 inch catfish on her Dora pole...

Wow, what an eventful trip, look at it this way, all the bad luck should be gone, it sounds as if you used enough of it to get you through the rest of the summer anyway.

i fished out of fountainhead monday for a few hours, only ended up with 2. surface temps read around 80 on my fish finder when i left. figure its too hot to be throwing senkos off the shores and in the shallower waters, although people seemed to be doing that all day. i saw most of the fish hovering in the 10-20ft range(but not at the bottom). Any suggestions on how to target them. my crankbaits dont usually dive past 10ft, i could try doing a texas rig but i figure it will be hard to tell what depth its at
any suggestions on what i can throw at them?

I'd be throwing cranks or spinnerbaits if fish are at that depth. I'll be taking pops out monday, water should have cooled down a bit after that last few nights.

This is the time of year that gets everyone throwing everything they have, eventhough your crank bait will not seem to go beyond 10 ft. you may be able to get that crank even deeper by putting your rod in the water about 2 feet.
Spinners are going to be useful this time of year as well, if you can see the fish on your sonar, then fish the spinner like you would a spoon, this works great for fish feeding in the O2 rich layer of water, keep in mind fish this time of year are feeding in that layer of water for short periods of time, so keep a close eye on that sonar.
Soon you will need to know your structure in the waters you fish, if not by now, they soon will be holding to all kinds of structure, then the T-rig and rage rig will be good tools to use.
If the fish were not on the bottom, how far off the bottom they were will usually help me figure out what rig to use, on the bottom, T-rig, jigs, Rage rigged Rage tail plastics, and depending on depth and bottom structure, spoons too, 2-4 ft off the bottom C-rig, drop shot, swim baits, spoons, spinners, suspended fish, (in between or middle depths) medium to deep diving crank baits and suspending jerk baits, also I like to get their attention with spooks, you can call up a good amount of fish form 15 to 20 feet, stick baits are awesome as well.

haha i hope all the bad luck is gone. i was actually excited to get that little striper as i didnt get one at all last year and put in more time for them than any year in the past, go figure. another thing against me was the batteries on the trolling motor werent charged enough to use it, just drifting along the boat would get out of position too often. the fact my initial plans got stymied could have factored in also, i didnt put in enough time to figure everything out after that...

Mike W, you can still catch fish shallow with a senko. Be aware of what the fish are doing and locating the fish can be easy. Water temp in the low *80 range, fish in the middle of pre spawn, spawn, post spawn?? Look at some of the deeper edges of flats on main lake and some of the secondary points in the bigger creeks. If they have any wood or grass, all that much better.

with the water all brown(and guessing going to still be tmrw), it was impossible to sight fish for the spawning bass in the shallows. i hit up a few usual spots that i've caught fish with senkos before earlier in the day before it got too hot, then i switched to using my fish finder and exploring points and drop offs.
ill let you know what i tried/how well i do tomorrow!

Fished this morning on base. Caught a 2 lb. bass. Had at least a 12+ catfish but it snapped my 6 lb test 3 feet in front of me. Once I set the hook on the cat. All you heard was the drag going out. That was an awesome fight. But I used a new small black buzzbait but for some reason, I couldn't keep it on the top. It acted more like a spinner bait. Caught the bass on a weightless 6 inch grub. Got a lot of short strikes. Maybe next time use a smaller bait? It was a pumkin colored with red flakes.

ive caught a lot of bass fishing a buzz bait below the surface like a spinner bait, never actually caught a bass fishing a buzz bait on top though lol go figure...

Don't fish the bait where the blades are completely on top of the water, what you want from a buzzbait is to have the blades just barely cracking the surface.
I use a retrieve, pause for one second, retrieve when the bite is slow after/during a cold front, if they are pretty active I will slow roll it back.
The dual bladded models are great for slow rolling.

hit up a back bay creek on muddy creek road yesterday and got a 1-2lb bass on senkos, another one got away after it went ariel, and saw a smaller fish bite my chartouse color swimbait.
I gota question, towards the end of the day when it started to get dark, all the fish started jumping (alot of top water action) mostly small splashes so not sure what kind of fish, but a few good ones that look liked bass jumping maybe. I kept trying my wacky rig senko, and chartouse color swimbait (minnow) with no luck or bites. What kind of lure should i be using? top water? and if so whats a good top water. Last night was the most ive seen where fish were breaking the surface, and stil not bites.

Could have been small forage, and possibly carp or bass for the bigger ones, but yes I would have thrown some type of top water bait first, or a spinner and let it fall through the bait fish.

went to lake royal monday around 5 pm caught a couple on a black rubber worm. nothing more than a pound or so. going to burke lake this friday. any1 know how the bass are biting as of now? and on what?

Two weeks ago caught a couple of solid 3 lb fish on points with a shaky.With the receint rain and high water, I wouldn't rule out weed lines shallow. Lower lake was better than the top. Good luck and let us know how you do.

I have fished both Fountainhead and Burke for 20+ years. Both have great fishing if you know where to fish and at the same time can be tough to find fish. Time on the water fishing small areas and learning them will get you more and better results!

I have had much better results on the Occ. Res. then Burke, but that is over 2 years of living here experience. I went to Burke last night..... caught a handful but no size. I was happy to not get skunked. Many a good fishermen I have met in the area get skunked at Burke..... don't feel bad.

forgot to update, but i went out of fountainhead sat and it was interesting. temps were good, in the 70s the whole morning/early afternoon. water levels were ridiculously high, probably a good foot or two. i noticed all the grass lines that i can usually see were completely submerged. water was pretty murky and there were huge piles of debris floating around. couldve easily picked up half a dozen sports balls floating.
i did manage a good 2lber on a senko in the shallower water. i fished a handful of points/deeper water but couldnt manage to get anything. tried spinners, sinking jerk bait, texas rig, and we even had some live minnows lindy rigged.
ill have to keep trying to figure out how to get the deeper bass!

Spent the entire day on SML. Started out slow but we figured out the bite... in the morning it was brownies on a 5" green pumpkin shakeyhead on the points in about 4 to 10 feet. This afternoon and evening it was still the points but was the bigmouths with spinnerbaits slow rolled from shallow to deep. Most were on structure and groups of 5 or 6.

Well I finally did it, I finally went fishing for the first time in over a year.
I had a window of opportunity to fish Anna yesterday, upper lake was stained, mid to lower lake was fairly clear, started my day at 6:30, at 6:45 the boats, skiers and jet skies were already out in force, at 8:00 the place was rockin, I started out with jigs around boat docks and grass lines, all I got were small strikes, little fish, the further north I got the more stained it became, so I switched to darker colors on the jig and got a couple of really good hits but since I had not fished in over a year, I was rusty to say the least and missed, I switched to a spinner and tried to concentrate on the grass lines, but the battering of wakes from big boats made it very difficult to fish these areas with any kind of lures, got my first VGIF check for the day.
I switched my focused on some coves that I knew, they had some deeper water access hoping to catch a few on the points or tucked under a dock, spinners were not working and neither were the medium depth cranks, at least not on the points, again the boat traffic kept me from having the proper boat position, so I knew the shakey head was out of the question there, so I tried back in the coves, nothing at all but small fast action strikes from sun fish, I pulled out of my last cove and got checked over again.
I packed up around 10 am and headed south on the lake, the lake you would have thought was a holiday weekend by this point, boats were everywhere !!!
I finally made it to mid lake hoping to fish some deeper structure, that hope was crushed by the sheer amount of boat traffic, however I was noteing a lot of dead bass floating around from place to place, from the middle of the lake to the bottom of the lake, I counted 22 from the 208 bridge to Dukes creek, most were in the 3 lb range, on the shores I noted a few dead fish as well a couple of crappie and a couple of white bass, This was a first for me to see this many dead fish at this lake, I tried to talk to some of the guides there to see if anything was up with the lake but the stores were just too busy with customers.
Anyway the day was a total wash for me as far as the fishing goes, some of the sites were fun to see and some were not, I saw a jet ski get too close to some friends of theirs and spray them with water, yes, I did call the VGIF, but they never showed up.
I also saw a couple of young girls on a jet ski run aground in some shallow water at a pretty good rate of speed and threw one girl on the back about 20 feet, yes, I stopped and helped, how many others you ask? NONE, the VGIF was RIGHT THERE and only stopped after the whole thing was over, AND I got checked AGAIN !!!
After that I packed up and went home, on the way to Anna point I got stopped and checked not once but two more times, I am glad I got to go fishing if for nothing else to just knock off the rust, hopefully it will be a little better outing the next time.

sounds like youre outting was as rough as my last trip fishing wise. so you got checked 5 times in all? thats crazy. after the first check that day, you should get a tag or something saying youve been checked and passed for the day, sounds ridiculous that you got checked that many times. atleast you finally got to get out though...

Is that a joke? LOL, do they actually give those out? I have heard of the coast guard doing it, I just was not sure of how much truth there is to that.
Yes, 5 times in all, all 3 county's were represented, Orange, Spotts, and Louisa, I even heard the coast guard was there on Saturday, 2 times were by the same officer, the officer had a new recruit on with him the second time around, the newbe was being a kind of a pain in the #### but he was doing his job and I was glad to see them out there.
He was going to give me a ticket for not having my throw device readily accessable when he asked to see it, it took me all of 5 seconds to open the compartment lid and pull it out, but that they say was not good enough.
The other officer did speak up on my behalf and let me go but the newbe gave me a warning.

Put in at Osbourne Landing on the James once last year and had a complimentary Coast Guard check. They hand you a sheet at the end that they say you can hand to an officer if you get stopped.
I don't know if it works or not, I failed since I didn't have flares. I'm glad she wasn't handing out tickets since she wasn't listening to me when I reminded her that flares weren't required where I was. I would have been ticked if I had to waste my time to fight that one.
I still don't understand the throw cushion thing....is it supposed to be out when you are running too? I keep mine on top of everything in what I call my "safety compartment" where my PFDs, fire extinguisher, and first aid kit are. If it were out and visible I'd still think something would need be set on top of it to keep it from flying out of the boat....

Makes me not want to go to Anna!! I've been checked a bunch on the res, but after a while, the guys recognize you and just wave as they go by!! I realize it's a much large body of water that gets an amazing amount of use by many people that by all rights are barely able to walk and chew gum alone operate a craft!! seems a bit over the top being checked that many times in such a short amount of time. I would have had a hard time asking if they don't coordinat these checks with one another!

Just kidding, it seems everytime I am there I get stopped at least once, sometimes two or even three is not unheard of lol, others who fish there have not ever been stopped, and one that I know of does not even have a fishing licence.
So don't let that be a discouragement, you will love Anna especially in the am hours and late afternoon/evening hours, I would not suggest going over on a weekend like I just did until after the labor day weekend then it slows down a lot.
If you do go over on a weekend I would go out until around 10 am and go back out around 6 pm.

Launched out of Bull Run sunday morning. Ramp was getting busy at 6am! Caught bass all on NS spinnerbaits in shallows. Couldn't get any hits on crankbaits. Started heading back to the dock and BAM! Thought I had a 10lb+ on my line.
Nope, it was a cat 
Weighed in at 38-39lb,4ft long, released of course. I couldn't believe it didnt snap my 12lb line or bend the spinnerbait. Props to North Star Custom!

Geting stopped by the VGIF really turns me off. I always carry a extra plastic bag with me to pick up everyone else's trash. I see the "bottle" reel being used all over northern va. I have see people swimming at Buke and climbing on the d**n and parking in the fishing spots our liscence fees pay for as they go for a run......
Yet VGIF seems to love to stop me every chance they get. I understand it is their jobs, and I want them out there, I just wish they were a little nicer and reasonable about it. I was once asked about my throw..... which I was sitting on..... and I was told "How will you be able to throw it, you're sitting on it"........ I said that if my partner fell in the water, I could probably trouble myself to stand up, making the throw avaiable.
Just stinks those of us who respect and care about out resources get the attention and those abusing it and doing such reckless behavior seemingly never get busted. Again I support VGIF, just wish I saw those doing the wrong thing being punished.

I feel your pain lol, I get picked on a lot by my friends as to how many times I get checked, one time my best friend was no more than 50 yards from me, I got checked but he didn't, go figure !!
We did a friendly get together one time and three of the boats saw me get checked twice, I don't know what the deal is other than it must be my charming personality and really good looks LMAO !!!...either that or I look like a terrorist when I wear my cammo.

beaverdam is a tough place to fish, especially from shore. there are some nice bass in there though. watch out for ticks when you go there. what side did you go to? by the church or down the long dirt road?

when i was a kid in the 80s, Beaverdam used to be much more suitable to shore fishing, it is severely overgrown now, atleast the last time i went there...

Went out to Lake Anna sunday morning to do catch striper. Only 2 keeper, think the small quake scared the fish the night before. We found a BIG school with nice fish, none of the rods tipped.....weird. Ran into another school and it got crazy.

I've been doing pretty well in the creeks of the Potomac. Nothing huge but lots of 2-3 and occasional near 4lbers on topwaters with a snakehead or two thrown in the mix.

Lost a jig tat a client's pond today.
I got lazy and used a snap in stead of tieing direct to the jig head and she managed to open the snap and take my jig. Bummer.
Bite was slow this morning. Of the six I caught, all just picked up the bait and walked off slowly with it. No hard strikes. Other than the one hitting the jig and pig, all were caught on a wacky rigged Junebug five-inch Senko off a point and along the shore.
Nice fishing this pond as there is very little pressure. Another fisherman showed up about an hour after I arrived and he was pulling in the same size bass on a Texas rigged Senko.
Was a nice start to the day.
All six were between one and a half and two and a half pounds. I think the five I missed were the same size.

People were taking 3lb bass out of lake Royal? It would be a real shame, catch and release, especially on a lake that small.

This is the only lake i fish. I decided 3 years ago that i would just pick one and stick with it. I was very quickly humbled in the NOVA fishing and realized if i was going to catch anything, i needed to really learn at least one lake to give me a fighting chance. Even after 3 years, that place still humbles me occasionally. If i were you. Pick one lake, and really learn it. I think what it means to learn a lake means to fail 99% of the time on the water and every time you have that 1% success, you put that pattern in your repertoire and repeat. Eventually, you have a few successful patterns. I usually stick one over 4 most times i go to Beaverdam, but i have failed way too many times in order to get there. Lake jumping around the NOVA area hoping to find the "hot lake" is just too painful. Pick one.

That is some good advice Shimmy.... 3rd summer here and I am still hoping from body of water to body of water......
NOVA is easily the toughest area I have run into to learn in terms of consistency. I do enjoy bouncing from spot to spot, but forcing yourself to work on just one body of water is probably the quickest path to sucess here.
This heat is going to force us all to work on out summer patterns and deep water structure fishing

I have been catching quality and quantity from the res and Huntsman in the past few days. Football jig has been the most consistent producer with the fish absolutely mauling the bait! Find you some nice drops near deeper water and drag that thing around!!

I gave up on Blackwater a few weeks ago. Seems like the bite just cut off. I had all kinds of luck with cranks until a few weeks ago. Have had some luck with sinkos but seems like most are guarding fry and won't bite. Just chase and roll. Head down towards the dam and fish the fingers. All my topwater was early in the area where the second outline is. Hey Andrew, long time since we have chatted over a nice cold one!! You can absolutely get to good spots in a yak. One of the best spots out there is Ryan's dam within sight of the ramp. Also the point right across from the ramp!

Fished the Rappahannock River on Saturday, July 14.
Caught 8 with 4 keepers.
Lost a nice 2.5 one at the boat due to my negligence and not checking the line for cuts and nicks due to fishing in the wood on the main river.
Had 10 bites all day. The other one I lost wrapped me around a log and broke off. I had a little part of his lip on my hook.
Overall, nice day due to overcast skies and only got rained on three times.

finally got to do some fishing for the first time since 4th of july weekend this past saturday. hit up a small pond for about an hour. Around the entire pond from the bank to 3-4 feet out was covered in thick algae top to bottom, but i still could fish the middle and edges of this stuff, and thats what i did. started off with a weightless t-rigged baby rage craw in summer craw, and finished with a rage tail lizard in watermelon w red and black flake. both landed me fish and i only used one of each the whole time. i caught 6 altogether. 3 of them right around 2lbs +/- and the others smaller. not bad for an hour, since i went from noon-1pm. ive seen times at this pond where the bass wont bite anything except in the late evenings. also, the weather was decent, it was partially cloudy and mid80s id guess, so the heat wasnt too bad. definately needed that little bit of time that i spent fishing, it set the tone for a nice relaxing weekend...

Yes, I fished at Lakeside a handful of time years back. I also fished at the pond next to lifetime. I haven't been in the past 2 years after they drained it and filled it back up. It was killer before they drained it for repairs. Fished at 7pm-8pm one night and caught 14 LMB each weighing 2.5lb+. Largest being 4lb 12oz.
What also ticks me off is the people that fish there and leave a bunch of trash, corona bottles, trash bags, worm containers.

If I have to guess I would say roughly around the 3 lb mark give or take, but man, those are some good looking fish, really nice job spoon !!!!

Good question, two things have produced those results--a boat and a sonar unit.
I remember reading about some angler a long time ago that stated the only reason he got a boat was to have a place to mount his sonar unit.
Since I got the first sonar unit sometime in the 1960's--it was a Shakespeare flasher that attached to the top of a 12V dry cell battery with a suction cup transducer mount, I have convinced myself to get away from the bank and fish where most of the fish are. With any sonar unit you can find underwater depth changes that may be where the fish are---points, creeks, humps, steep drops, etc.
What that does is give you the opportunity to fish for mostly undisturbed fish since a majority of fisherpersons can't seem to get further from the shore than they can cast.

But just now, you say that you see structure ("where the fish are---points, creeks, humps, steep drops, etc."). So which is it? I'd like to know because I have a Humminbird 898c SI installed and I see a lot of structure, but rarely (almost never) fish. Am I doing something wrong?

BOTH, my replies are based on the topic and the perceived skill level of those participating.
If you want to see fish, you have to set the unit to display them the best.
First of all consider the size of the fish in relation to the SI Range setting. When using a 100' range in 20' of water, that is 240' displayed on that tiny screen. A 12' fish is not going to be noticeable. A general "rule of thumb" to see fish is set the SI range to three times the depth unless the water is less than10' deep, then set it to a long cast.
Turn off the left side digital readouts to get full screen width SI so stuff will look larger.
Use the Enhance Sharpness setting to highlight the fish--Med or Low works the best without getting the image too grainy looking. Set the screen scroll speed to the GPS speed.
You can use a faster screen scroll speed to make returns appear larger also and stretch a brush pile or tree to see inside the limbs better.
Use a SI color that you can see the best according to the ambient light. I change often during the day. Each person has different likes for color. Adjust the Sensitivity to get the best images all the time don't just "set it and forget it".
All the settings those units have are for a reason--to allow you to get the best images for any condition.
This is shad and crappie with 4 bass on the bottom (right side). How do it know what they are? I know the lake and I caught several crappie and two of the bass after taking this screen shot.

I kayak fish Riverbend about x2 a week. The water is up a bit, grass beds are breaking up, and water temp is back down.
Have been out to Audubon x2 in the past 2 weeks in late afternoon/evening on sunny-overcast days. Been tossing a green and rust colored 6" senko wacky and some weighted creature baits under docks. Missed 2 largger 3-4lber by the dam from Thoreau on the senko. Lots of small 6-9" caught on top of the water feeding on big schools of bait fish, mainly in the back part of the lake by the creek. My buddy pulled up a huge ~18" diameter snapping turtle from under a dock on a senko.
I plan on fishing Audubon Friday AM from my kayak. Will update with catch info.

Went to the Rappahannock river today to try out my motor and do some fishing. The water temp was 71 and I fished from 7:30 to 11. I landed 3 bass but only took pictures of two.

I went to Smith Mt. today with hokiebass804 today. Great day but nothing big. The pic is the biggest we got in the livewell. There was one bigger but, after getting it off the hook, I dropped it and it flip-flopped off the boat.

Went out on saturday before the cold front hit on sunday and they were really aggressive. Caught 8+ fish within a few hours. Found a few schools of bait fish and caught 3 bass off one school with a lake fork magic shad (perfect for fall fishing). And then moved off of the schools to find some bigger bass on some docks with 12" worms and got a 5-6 pounder, and a few others in the 3 pound range.

Went Friday afternoon but all I caught was chain pickeral. Ate up several chatterbaits but was fun. Largest was 22" and 1.8 pounds.

Heading out in about an hour and a half. Going to get in some river fishing in the jonboat. My usual trip is about 5.5 miles down the Staunton River from Altavista to my farm. About a 4 hour trip. Today, I decided to take the trip from Goose Creak down the Staunton to Altavista. It is just shy of 8 miles so it should take all day. Smallies mostly but there are some LM and walleye. I hadn't been down the river much this year since getting the new bassboat and that was one of my favorite ways to go. Very peaceful and serene. Really doesn't matter if I catch.

I have been so busy here it seems like time just goes by so fast, this coming weekend will or should be my last camping trip for the year, the campground we stay at does a Holloween thing for the children the last 2 weekends of October, it's like they have their own little community to go trick or treating in and the children love it, they get dressed up in their little costumes and have a blast !!!
I have ordered a new Skeet Reese rod and some new jigs from Seibert Outdoors and lookin forward to getting out there again, the river trip sounds amazing and I would love to be able to get that in before the year is over, and before it gets too cold.
I found some new interesting structure over at Anna when we did our meet and greet, I am also hoping to get to explore that as well this year, colder temps = very little boat traffic, I looked at my trolling motor this past week and I think it is time to retire that thing, it has been on it's last leg for the past 3 years now and I think it finally let go, I was hoping the extra cash would allow me some fishing trip money from my second job but now that I have to find one of those it may have to be put on hold, at least for now.
Thanx for the invite, I look forward to getting there I hope and fishing with ya soon !! I will give you a call or shoot you a text after this coming weekend and let you know how things are looking, I have to fix the portch on the house I think the following weekend, but after that i am looking to take a break from the everyday normal and relax a little.

Well... the trip today was 10 hours. Is that OK? Started at 7:30 this AM and got off the water at 5:30PM. I boated 35 Smallies and Largemouth. Not a joke... 35! Nothing really to speak of though. I lost a real pig right at the boat. Had caught a 2.35 pound smallie and failed to re-tie. That Largemouth had to have gone 15 pounds. He came out of the water at the boat and I felt like I was looking into a bucket. When his head went under... snap... I think I drifted a hundred yards with the broken line still in the water before I moved. Somewhere in the Staunton there is a bass with a Storm Kickin' Shad hung in his lip. Soon after they stopped biting the Storms. Tried flukes and nothing. Started throwing a wacky rig and it was on again. Green Pumpkin Yum Dinger 4" was the flavor. Problem was I kept catching the dinks... all under a pound, Tried a bigger Dinger and they would drag it around. Threw on a Z-Man Chatterbait and got hit after hit but didn't get one in the boat. Seemed like I couldn't get a decent hookset. Added a trailer hook and that did the trick. Well... the highlight of the day was catching something I had heard of but never caught or seen... a Roanoke Bass. It went about 1.38. So... pic is of the Smallie and the Roanoke Bass...

You know I am going to have to give you a little grief about loosing that monster right, well no, I changed my mind we have all had moments like that, but that is a lesson to us all, inspect your line after each snag and fish that we catch, you never know when one of these big girls are gonna hit your bait, sorry for the loss big guy !!!!
Look at it this way, when we get together and go fishing, we will find her again and you can get your bait back, how's that sound.
A Roanoke bass, I have also heard of these but had never seen one for myself, thats an odd looking bass but a beautiful bass none the less.
You know, and I think I have told you, I have never caught a SMB, it looks like there would be a very good chance of me getting my first SMB when we finally get to fish, as of right now I am looking at November the 10th and 11th or the 17th and 18th, one of those 2 weekends should be open for me do get down there, most likely the 17th and 18th but I will double check and get back with you before I make any promises, will either or both of those weekends work for you?

Going out today at a farm pond I have not fished in a year. Last time I checked it had several 8 pounders and like twenty dinks, and hundreds of bluegill. I'm going to try slow rolling a swimbait.

Fished the Historic James River out of Osborne Landing last Sunday.
Started at 7:00 on a falling tide which fell really s-l-o-w and then hit the slack tide around noon and the incoming tide around 2:00. Trailered the boat at 4:00.
Caught five, of which two were nice. Got one on a shaky head in the Barge Pit and the others on a Chartruse Sexy Shad around the jetties.
It was COLD and overcast the entire day making the bass move all over the place.
Going to Lake Chesdin next Sunday. That lake is down about three feet so the backs of the creeks and past Cattle Creek on the main lake are out of the equation.
Hope they will be staging along the drop offs and main lake points so I can find them.
May go out this coming week to a local lake and fish for about an hour if possible.

SML today. Water temp about 58. Everything, when we finally found it, was in 40 to 80 feet. Wormed it and got one. Went to my flutter spoon and got some good strikes but never could get them up. Finally got it hung in 80 feet and lost it. That's when I noticed that the one I caught was not doing too well. It came from about 65 feet of water and had swim bladder problems. It finally went down but I decided not to risk another until I got something to relieve the air.

Except in extreme circumstances, if you release those deep caught fish immediately they will be fine. They only begin to have problems when you keep them in your livewell for a while.

Yeah... right here at my farm. I usually put in at the Town and come down to our place. I do the Goose Creek trip as well but, in a jonboat, it is a 10 hour trip. Great striper fishing when they run though. Thank you so much for this past weekend, Saturday was a day I will not forget for a long, long time, you have an absolutely beautiful family and all of them made me feel right at home, you and your family's hospitality was more than anyone could ever ask for.
It was refreshing to hear how much you all did together as a family, I look forward to the next time and hopefully getting our families together to enjoy a day or two together as well.
As for the fishing, SML even though 6 feet low and windy as all get out, was still a great place to fish, we only managed two, one I wish we did have a scale but I think we both agree that if it was not over 3lbs it was right there at it, Beautiful fish, the other roughly in the 2lb range still a very nice fish, both of us had one get away from getting under some cover and leaving us snagged in the end, which ironically I feel sure would have been our two biggest fish of the day.
I look forward to the next visit to SML and I hope to fish with you again, you put us on some really good fish and I learned a ton !!!

My Daughter talked nonstop about you and some of the things you mentioned about your family... especially your Daughters. She hopes to meet them someday. Did Leesville Lake today. Water was around 54 and very low. Was not spectacular with any one lure type but caught 5 LMB (2 to 5 pounds) and 4 Stripers (8 to 12 pounds). The LMB's were on jigs with craw trailers, silver/blue rattletrap, and one on a chartreuse spinner. All the Stripers were on an A-Rig until I hung the bottom and broke it off. Everything was caught in 25+ feet of water and almost all were hovering above the bottom about 5 feet. Again with Leesville... debris everywhere.

Fished from 11-4.30 from the backseat of my friend's boat today. Water temps were in the high 40s. My buddy caught 6, with the biggest around 3.5#. I managed half a dozen too, but the biggest was maybe 2#. All of mine were caught on a 3/16 oz Baby Boo jig with a rage craw trailer.

For those who want to fish Anna, I can't stress how important it is to go slower there this time of year, take your time with her and look around, fish all of the available patters you know, even the most simple ones can be very productive, find the fish first, bait fish, then you will find the bass.

I don't know that I can find all of the ingredint's but I will try, the ones I may have problems with are the red velvet madelenines and the mascarpone cheese, and maybe the liqueur, the liqueur will be hard to keep around "hiccup"...if you know what I mean lol !!

Another vote of thanks to Traveler for the wonderful photos. That was very kind. Also thanks for sending us our water bottles back. We are looking forward to the spring meet with great anticipation. Hopefully we will be in our new boat by then!

Only one way to find out........go give it a try and there is always something in a creek even if it isn't a smallie i am sure there will be something to put a stretch in your line.

yeah. I just did some research and there appears to be largemouth, some smallmouth, bluegill, crappie, and some channel cats. I went out yesterday from about 11:30-4:30. Water temps were in the low 70's, windy and pollen covered the water. Did scrounge up 3 bass and one pickerel with the one bass measuring in at 21" so all in all a good day and better than I thought it would be given the cold front that rolled through and the dip in air temperature.

I hit Lake Braddock today for my 1st outing this year and landed one after only a couple of casts felt really good to get back out there. I went yesterday to SML. Had a GREAT day. (copied from my FB page) Boated many bass and a bonus. Fishing this one spot and got a hard strike. Enough to break the tip on my drop shot rig. Brought it in and it was a 6 pound catfish. Threw a shakeyhead and boated another whiskerfish. Noticed that there were catfish everywhere eating cicadas. So... I started throwing into the pile. Boated a total of 14 cats all between 3 and 6 pounds each. To top it off... my wonderful Wife cooked a mess of them for me tonight. Nothing like fresh catfish for dinner.

You wont find the answers there I can promise you that.....enjoy the beer though !!
There are no answers to relationships, only reactions and the objective thinking of the other half, no matter which half it may be, sharing a life with another is not something that comes easy to either one, even though we think it should be, pull your boot strings up guys, have a few and have some fun, without the fun it's hard to find the joy in life and things that matter most to us as humans.

I fished a kayak only charity tournament this past weekend to benefit Heroes On the Water and Project Healing Waters and finished with the 5th place bass at 17.5".
Not the biggest by far but still had a blast. I was fishing out of Bear Creek Lake State Park with three other friends, since so many others went to Sandy River and Briery Creek. One of them landed a nice 21.5" chunk and my buddy Doug landed a nice fat 19.5" a few yards ahead of me. We were fishing in a line of four with myself in position #3. Funny thing is, I was the first person to land a quality fish and I caught it in an area that they had just fished but had breezed over. Go to baits on the day were PowerTeam Lures wacky rigged Sic Stiks and shakey head rigged 7" Finicky Ticklers in green pumpkin or black/blue due to the stained water. It's funny how the pattern between the three lakes was completely different. At Briery, the best bite came on topwater Super Spooks, while at Sandy the best came on a crankbait. These three lakes are located within 30 miles of one another here in VA. Biggest bass of the tournament came from Sandy at 23".
