Does anyone have any info on what's coming in the new year for baitcasters. Any new technology or should I stick with the tried and true.
pinnacle is coming out with some super light weight reels, under 6 oz adn one model is $99 and the other is $200 something, looks real nice, supposed to be out around christmas time
Abu Garcia was suppose to introduce the JDM program mid September, but TW or BPS still don't have the JDM reels. (LTX,Elite 8 and IB I think)
If you go back and look at the ICAST coverage on TT or even TW, you will see all new products to be released in the coming months.
tackle warehouse and TT is what sorry for my ignorance

ANY NEW BREAK DESIGNS OR BEARING UPGRADES THAT ANYONE KNOWS OF?
Shimano still has an October release coming. It may be cool.
If you're looking for something new and interesting, Daiwa's Tatula is looking to be a pretty good reel.
I would also take a hard look at Pflueger's revamped baitcasters. The previous generation Patriarchs are fantastic reels.
I had a 1999 Pfleuger president and i really enjoyed that reel.Liked the older brake style similar to the shimanos. Pfleuger seemed to have smoother bearings than the rest aside from Shimano of which I have never owned. Spinning reels I have had and still do(Shimano).Im curious why the Pfleugers bearings seemed smoother and are they still that way.
I don't know if I would attribute it to the bearings but my Patriarchs are very smooth reels on the retrieve. They are packed full of bearings, so that does add to the smooth feeling the reels have. They also have dual braking which cast great when set right.
Yes i have the dbs on my bps rcx and revo stx it is great to have the extra adjustments I like both reels and like the look of the last patriarch. They are all aluminum.Wish i had one.The new ones look good too.
daiwa has the best low profile reel on the market, the tatula reel its the coolest reel ever
Anybody going to give the new helios air a shot ?
Im in the market as well for another baitcaster and pretty sure okuma is the only company i havent tried yet, lol
The October Shimano release rumor I heard is the Metanuim is coming over at $430.
I have fallen in love with the Daiwa Ballistic T-3 reels. They are around for $150-$180.
The XS (8:1 Ratio) comes stock with a nice bearing supported handle (can add more/change the knobs).
Add a bearing below the drive shaft (5x9x3, ~$8-9) and one to the worm gear ((5x8x2.5 ~$8-9) and you have one INSANELY smooth and sturdy feeling reel.
If you get one of the 6.3 or 7.1 ratio reels you can do the drive shaft bearing and add a Lexa Handle (what comes on the XS model) for $14 from Daiwa.
The Magforce 3D braking is really slick and almost TOO adjustable.
The drag on this reel is a smooth beast (13-14lbs without an upgrade)
So in the end you can get a light (7.5-7.75 oz) sturdy reel that really preforms very well for $150-$212 (upgrades added in).
They are not as Rolex/Mercedes C-Class solid/smooth as a Zillion, but they are half the price. They are every bit as strong as the E series Citicas/Curados I have, with a better drag and better casting.
Yes I like Daiwa, just haven't pulled the trigger on those T-wings,The Tatula does look promising,as well as the Helios(they have the abec 5 bearings I think).Anybody sweet on BPS Johnnymorris are they going to upgrade the signature series or keep the same reel for the new year?Anyone own one and can tell me how the perform?I have a Rick Clunn ,I like,Might be a better reel made a little lighter.

I think they recently went through an upgrade so it'll take a couple more years
The Johnny Morris BPS has a spool with japanese bearings (and side plate) does it cast a little smoother.Just curious seems like a good buy.Like to find somebody that has one and can compare to other top end reels.
Either the Daiwa Tatula or Lew's new BB1 are good choices in the $150.
Tom
Never had a Lews, only hear good things about them. BB1,how's the casting and backlash control. The breaks look different similar to the Revo Premier(bb1 pro) The bb1 also has interesting breaking feature that is different than most others(the smart plus system).Im still kinda in favor of the dbs breaking system but like to try the infinitely variable styles of the bb1 pro and revo premier.I might be putting too much into the breaks but I like to fish the windy days and it helps to add little more break and back off it on the fly.To help handle wind gusts.

iv tested them and most of my friends use baitcasters exclusively. all my friends has the tatula and they said is unmatched for the price.
The new Diawa Tatula is pretty great! I bought one to try about a week ago and I have nothing bad to say about it so far after 3 fishing trips. I mainly use Lew's Tournament Pros and this tatula may be the reel that converts me to Diawa. It is very smooth and casts a mile. The new t-wing system works flawlessly
Hey good info I like the looks of the Tatula .Its new so if ya can keep me posted how it works out for you.So far so good. The type r looks good too.Thank you, very interesting reel I have owned some cheaper Daiwas and they worked well.

Hitting the lake again monday..will keep u posted
OK good luck, thanks
Well after a long day on the lake ive gotta say im lovin the tatula more and more each time I cast it. I have mostly Lews reels and I found myself going for the tatula and just changing lures on it instead of picking up another rod with the same lure on it..lol..the only thing I like more about my lews tournament pros are the weight difference..they feel significantly lighter
Thanks for the reports. I've been day dreaming about my first baitcasting setup. And I've sorta narrowed it down to a Lews BB-1, but the recent forum reviews on the Tatula are very enticing.
That Tatula is pretty sweet from the sounds of it. How well do you think the levelwind will hold up and does it cast easier and further? What size line and lure you throwing? and did you catch any?

My 1st baitcast reel was going to be a 201E7. It wound up being a Daiwa Fuego on closeout at TW. Then I picked up another when TW only had 3 left. Wish I could have afforded all three. This forum has always leaned more towards Shimanos since I found it in '09. Lews have come on strong the last year. Somehow I wound up with slightly over half of my reels being Daiwas. The cheapest was another TW closeout at $30...the Procaster 100HN. It is a solid reel. My other Daiwas include TD-S, TD-X, TD-Z, TD-Z Type R, Sol, Fuego, Alphas and Zillion. Only negative coment I can make about any of them is that I am not fond of the spool release locations on my S and Type R reels. I much prefer the standard thumb release location.
I've never owned a bad Daiwa, although one of the used ones I bought did have to be sent in for a minor repair. It is another great Daiwa...the TD-Z 105H, and works great for what I am using it for...light lures. I have been reading a lot about the Tatula and Tatula Type R. May have to pick up a used one next year when one of you guys buys the next latest and greatest reel to come out.
A lot of my reels are like me.....oldies but goodies.
Anything Shimano.
Second choice Lews.
Watch for holiday sales.
Daiwa makes good casting reels in general. The Tatula is just no exception. The T wing deal is kinda cool but it's the general Daiwa engineering that makes it what it is. I wouldn't expect the T wing to be any more or less durable than any other level wind.
Well so far the levelwind has worked flawlessly but only time will tell for how long. Im confident it will last though, it is very crisp when it flips back over. I was using 15lb P-line flouro on a 7' quantum smoke MH rod. Threw a 1/2 oz spinnerbait, 3/8 crankbait, 3/4 swimbait...I tried several lures and it really casted everything about the same distance..which by the way, it casts a effin mile..I didnt try any 1/4 oz lures. It feels more powerful than my Lews TP when burning in a crank bait or spinnerbait. As for fish, only caught a few but I didnt get to get on the lake till 11 so I feel I did ok..biggest one was around 2 1/2 lbs
Thats all good.DVt,Brent1981,Sam,New2bc4bass,I enjoy the feedback. Kinda down to three.Lews,Shimano, and Daiwa.Daiwa in the lead though.Just a thought, that Tatula might be more balanced on a heavier rod ?Not sure most of my rigs are heavy.I have one light one(STX) it is nice over a long day.

I don't know about you, but I often switch rods (and thus reels) during a day of fishing. In May I was in Florida fishing with my bro-in-law. Had an STX, Chronarch 101A and a Trion with me. One day we went to a tidal water inlet to fish. Was fishing by 8 a.m.. Quit at about 2. Got something to eat. Unloaded boat in lake behind his house, and fished until around 9:30 p.m. I'm 65. I don't work out. I can't understand how the weight of a reel can tire someone out from a day of fishing. I can understand how reeling in a spinnerbait cast after cast after cast can tire out the rod arm. Don't think the weight of the reel is the reason, tho.
EDIT: See! What did I tell you? Sam confirmed it. Number 1 Shimano, number 2 Lews, forget about the rest.
Yea I do burn out the old spinnerbait sometimes. Some days I just throw the thing faster and faster.Compulsive fishing disorder.Doctor said I should relax and let him get more casts in.
I change reels several times a day while fishing too..its not that im tired but u can notice a difference when u move from a rod and reel that weighs a few ounces lighter

Smokes are awesome rods.
I want to try a smoke reel but I havent had much luck with quantum reels
I just sold an old headphone amp for $150. Hope to sell another piece of audio equipment for $100 soon. I see a Tatula or BB-1 on a *** MH rod in my future.
The BB1's cast really well..just not sure about the plastic rod that holds the palm cover..on the other hand the tatula palm cover is a little harder to access but really there is no reason to access the palm on the tatula cause its not centrifugal
I do like the magforce z brake on the tatula..it works great in high wind
That's what I like about it also. The other style breaks can wear out.I don't believe magnetic can.Appreciate all your posts!
There is a 29 minute video on you tube that explains the magforce z breaking..pretty interesting if u have time to watch it
I saw the one by keepingitreel fishing if you mean that one it was very informative. They put some engineering into the magforce z thats for sure.A friend gave me an older daiwa, pretty beat up.I cleaned it and lubed it, still a little rough but for heavy lures that thing can bomb some led.Its the 89 dollar twichin bar style a little odd shaped but it just reminded me how Daiwa works.I had a TD-X I kinda lost, good real also.Used to cast all the line to the end.It didn't hold too much but cast all of it.12lb. line
So have u decided what to buy yet..lol
I know you're not asking me, but I just picked up a new Diawa Tatula 6.3:1 reel and a new *** *** 7'1" MHF road. Can't wait to set it up and try my first BC cast! Stupid work always getting in the way...
So you are thinking of buying a new baitcaster?
About time!
Go with any brand you like, as long as it is a strong name brand.
Bring the rod with you to the tackle store and put the reels you are considering on the rod to see how it feels with each rod.
Then make up your mind and start to save for the next baitcaster.
The Bait Monkey will be proud of you.

I'm pretty set on the Tatula.or maybe Shimano lol. Never owned a Shimano .Think I'll get the Tatula first.
Im thinkin about tryin a quantum exo next..may as well try them all...lol
Quantum has always been sketchy to me I have used several and they start out ok but they don't work well for me.I have used the Accurrist(older but good),Pt tour (older not so good),kvd($300)(ok but something not right.(friends reel),The smoke pretty good again its a friends a little fussy.May have been how it was taken care of.They build a strong reel but I'm gun shy now .

Do you have a link? I'd like to watch it as over half of my reels are Daiwas.

I finally got a chance to check out the Tatula at BPS tonight. I came away very impressed. The reel felt solid and the crank was very smooth. I also like the new knobs on the Tatula. There's only so much you can judge in the store but the reel seemed like a great bargain at $150.

Congratulations. I have the 7'3" MF ***. It is hard for me to cast with one hand with this rod. Others have no problem. Luckily almost every cast I make is 2-handed, so it isn't a problem for me. Got a good price on the rod as it was a problem for the original owner as he makes almost all one-handed casts, and didn't like the rod for that style of casting. It is a nice rod otherwise. Matter of fact, one of my best reels currently resides on this rod.
I think you will be very pleased with your new outfit. I have no experience with the Tatula, but do own quite a few different models of Daiwa reels. I am very pleased with all of them.
cddan, thanks for the link while I was typing. Too late tonight to watch it, but I will for sure watch it this weekend.

Liking what I hearing!
Cddan..that is the youtube video I was talking about..very informative..im with you on the quantums..I have had bad experiences too but after holding the exo at academy a few days ago..it is soooo light but yet feels durable. I want to try one out but im a little scare of wasting almost $300 when I could just buy another lews or tatula
For that matter I could almost buy 2 tatulas for the same price and I am very confident in the tatulas now after using it about 6 times now
how about the tatula type r they are 200 bucks and a little lighter 7.6oz.should be out soon

I'm waiting for the Type R to be released before I buy one. It has a lighter spool, which should help it cast lighter baits better.
Oh Im definately getting a type r when they hit the shelf cause I can only imagine how nice it is going to be.
anyone know the release date?
Not sure exactly but it jas to be soon
Looking like next month

I made it out to the bank twice the last two days and got some practice in. I'm starting to adjust for the differences: (1) left vs. right retrieve, (2) casting process and angle, (3) worrying about backlashes.
Aside from the inherent differences, I'm loving the Tatula reel and *** rod. It's extremely smooth both to cast and retrieve. The T-wing system seems to make a ton of sense. The only criticism I would have is that the reel seems a bit large for my smaller hands.
Please take my review with a large grain of salt though. This is my first BC setup. I'll refer to a quote I use when I eat Thai food: "I don't really know good Thai food from bad Thai food, but I like it."

One of the major "a-ha" moments I had yesterday was casting with two hands. When I started with one, the trajectory of the lure had no lift. You could draw a straight line from my rod tip to the splash. No amount of adjustment seemed to help get the lure up until I started holding/guiding the rod butt with my left hand. I'm sure it was just one adjustment among a bunch of others, but it worked. My casts have more distance with less splash.
I know J Franco on here has mentioned that he always uses 2 hands to cast except for certain techniques requiring only one...such as flipping or pitching. My distance seems to be the same for sidearm or overhand, but accuracy is best overhand...the most accurate being when I turn the reel sideplate towards the front. I have mentioned before that most of my casts are underhand (roll) casts except for when trying for ultimate accuracy. This gives me a smoother cast as there is no sudden stop and rod reversal...which also has the side benefit of resulting in less backlashes or overruns.
Using a baitcast reel well takes time. The only way to get there is practice. Definitely do not try for distance at first. Also use weights from the middle of the rod's rating and up, although I wouldn't use the highest lure rating either as that can require a little more finesse so as not to overpower the rod.
My casts always went way left (I cast right handed) when I first started with a b/c reel. I grew up on spinning gear. You have to learn to release sooner than what you are use to on a spinning reel. This year I have practiced left hand casting, and can pretty much throw equal distances with either hand.
Best of luck to you. Be prepared to spend a lot more on gear if you are anything like me when it comes to reels. I now have about 30, and would have at least 30 more if I had the money. I've actually spent a lot more than I should have as it was. Dang Bait Monkey!
I am a Lew's man myself. As far as I'm concerned you can't beat them.
