Okay, we've go the $1k combo thread. Let's go in the other direction. What is the least expensive outfit...your cost...you use? Please...let's not mention those $1k combos you received as gifts.
You could include what you use the outfit for for extra credit.
Purchased new $47.....$30 for reel, $17 for rod. Berkley Lightning 6'MH with Daiwa Procaster 100HN. Bought for grandson who is staying with spinning gear so I grabbed it. I like throwing 1/2 oz. spinnerbaits on it. Rod and reel both vibrate from start to finish of retrieve. Reel is typical Daiwa solid, casts very well and is pretty darn smooth. Short rod zings that 1/2 oz. out there a fairly good distance.
$50 Daiwa aird 6'6M, purchased new for $38, and a lews speed spool purchased new for $70 plus a spool of 12lb big game $6 at walmart, my cheapest yet pretty good setup cost me $114.
i use this for small shallow cranks, and small topwaters.
abu garcia siler max is my froggin frog jsut because i fish alot of nasty stuff and dont want to get my others all jammed up with slime etc
5' Avid UL/F spin and my Saros 1000F, $140.00 + $100.00 or 6' Premier MH/F and Lew's BB1 $100.00 + $100.00
6'8 mh 2nd gen cumara with a ci4+1000f. That's my cheapest and do it all combo.
Might have you all beat on this one lol... I got a Rapala Nitro Spinning combo (http://reviews.canadiantire.ca/9045/0784646P/rapala-rapala-nitro-spinning-combo-reviews/reviews.htm) on sale for $12.99CAN that i've been catching all of my bass on. Using some flourocarbon line that was on sale for $6.99, and I haven't had any problems other than the bail getting loose and needing re tightening occasionally
My Cheapest Combos I use - Fenwick Elite Tech M/XF 6'8 or was it 9 =100 + Symetre 2500 FL 100 = 200 and Veritas MH/F 7'3" 90 + Citica G6 120 = 210. But I bought the Veritas on a blowout price 40 bucks. So even sweeter.
Abu Garcia ProMax 3600 - $5 at a yard sale + $3 for a new line guide pawl =$8
7' med. Berkeley Lightning Rod at the same yard sale - $2 + $2 for a new tip guide = $4
Combo price = $12
Tom
Deep South flipping stick I bought from Speed for $80 and a TD-X 103HSDL I bought used on eBay for around $50.
bass fishing -savvy733 i got for i think 115 /w discounts and sales /w curado 201e7 i basically stole from dicks last year for 92.00.
stream trout- ESP rods 6'6 UL was 70$ /w shimano sahara 1000 that i got for 25$ new. the 4# stren magnathin on it puts me just above 100$.
Shimano Sahara 2500 - $30
Abu Vendetta - $30
Total - $60
Rod, reel, line, bait = about a hundred bucks...
...the 9 pound bass was free
My $4.99 to $9.99 Shakespeare, quantum, zebco spinning and Shakespeare, zebco, ready2fish, crankbait rods with my Finor($80) & okuma ($60) spinning reels and my Shakespeare, bps, Chinese, Mitchell, crankbait reels that run between $12 to around $59.
I can use any rod, any decent reel but we do need a quality fishing line. Sorry but I'm very, very frugal.
Right now its a $50 Gander Mountain spinning reel on an Acadia Sports rod that sold at 2 for $50 while the company was still in business, So I've got about $75 in that combo. My first baitcast combo was $55 for a Daiwa Advantage I got on closeout for $25 and an Ugly Stik. I still have and use both the rod and the reel, but the reel is now paired with a St. Croix Mojo and the rod has an Ardent c400 on it.
Gen 2 vendetta MLF ($30) and shimano sienna 1000 ($30)
7'0" ML Daiwa Procyon spinning rod, Okuma Inspira spinning reel, the rod wasa Christmas gift and the reel I grabbed from a gift card but I picked it out unlike the rod.
The rod was $70 and the reel was on sale for $40 so $110 is the total, BTW if you don't mind fishing with the previous years product or you don't mind something discontinued you can get some great deals. The Okuma Inspira spinning reel I got for $40 is a great reel that was discontinued, it was normally a $109 but due to the fact it was discontinued TW was blowing them out cheap. Right now anyone needing a new set up but is on a budget should keep their eyes looking to tackle shops all over, the ICAST items will be arriving which means any series that was discontinued or upgraded by new will be getting discounted pretty big, look for the old model Fenwick HMG to be on sale, also look for the Lews Tounament speed stick SL to be discounted pretty heavy. If you keep your eyes open and can resist the bait monkey you'll be surprised at what you can get.
Least expensive is a dobyns savvy 735 with a lews bb1 reel and fx2 line. I don't exactly have cheap combos since I fish only dobyns rods
Vendetta with a lews tournament mg
I have a Falcon Bucoo micro guide rod with a Curado 50E. I think I paid $75 for the rod and $130 for the reel.
The cheapest rod that I use with any regularity is a Kistler Carbon Steel with a Revo S. I probably spent about $200 total for the rod and reel. It's the best spinnerbait combo I've ever fished.
I don't remember how much I paid for my Shakespeare Sigma/Ugly Stick combo when in my teens, though it couldn't have been much since that was 30+ years ago. My first baitcaster setup was a BPS Tourney Pro and a 6'6" M Ugly Stick which was under $100. Both work well, though my current favorite setup is a Pro Qualifier sitting on a 6'6" M Veritas....

Not to sound like a parent, but I am.... You said you were 16 in the 1K thread, are you saving for College, or your own home?
Good for you! Keep fishin'

I see you're from CT so your cost of living has to be comparable to mine in MA, you HAVE to be frugal....
Now the BIG question: Yanks or Sox?
I have 2 $30 vendettas mounted with a $60 president baitcaster and $50 asaro baitcaster. All bought new. I have 2 $25 quantum pt energy rods paired with more of the $50 asaro. All bought new. Then there is the daiwa ballistic crankin rod for $65 paired with a $30 PQ . rod was new PQ was used. A $39 h2o express with a $40 PQ . rod was new reel was used. One of the least inexpensive was a $39 vendetta spinning with a daiwa exceler spinning for $15 both bought new. Also have 2 $70 veritas with $50 gold carbonlites. Rods were new reels were used. A $50 revo s on another $70 veritas. Both new. And the least inexpensive......a $20 carbonlite paired with a $30 PQ. Both used
Guess I'm a sucker for clearance and close out deals and good working used equipmemt. Bottom line is if ya have patience you can get some smokin hot deals.

This was incredibly helpful. I've been doing my research on BR here about rods and reels, trying to find a good quality set up that works for me for ~$100. Sounds like I need to keep checking my two local tackleshops! I'm going to do some research on the Fenwick HMG and Lews Tournament SL that you mentioned and see if I can find them. It does get a bit overwhelming with all the options, similar to lures, but with lures spending $5 on something I didn't like is a lot different than spending $100 on something I don't like!
My spinning set up is my cheapest setup. Abu cardinal- 30 + Berkley Amp rod- 29.99= 59.99$
It's the only set up i've paid full retail for and it's the cheapest. Not a bad setup for being so cheap.
shimano sedona $60
ultralight ugly stick $15
Bought for my grandson who never used it. $30 bubble pack Shakespeare size 30 reel, spooled up with pieces of 15# braid laying around, mounted on a Daiwa med rod closeout for $25. I only use this combo for jigs and bottom fishing, has caught more 6-10# bass than anything else I have. Guess 25 bucks is all I need to spend to "feel" them swimming by.
My UL is a used Mitchell 308 that I got as a gift. The reel is mounted on a 7' ML BPS microlite rod that I got as a Christmas present last year. So that rig was basically free.

I've done it a few times. Curado 51E $98, Original Cielo $75, Superlite PT $69 + shipping = $87
About $730 MSRP for $260. Also 3 Falcon Experts about $860 MSRP...my cost $345.
Yup, closeouts are the way to go.
Bps rick clunn $119 Croix premier ( $130) scored the rod ay at dicks in clearance for $37 bucks. The had 50% on all clearance stuff sale...yeah I bought two premiers lol

Why doesn't my local DSG store have those kinds of sales?
Berkley 7' MH Lightning rod shock bought at Wal-Mart for $40, with a used Citica 201D from the flea market here for $60. This is my frogging set up. I just can't see paying much for a frog rod when the $40 LR will do it as well as any $200 rod I have used for frogs. The D's may be heavy, but they are solid and strong, and cast as well as anything.
So far the best bang for buck rods I've seen listed here so far IMO are:
daiwa aird
berkeley lightning rod
..both IM6 and around $40.. great choices for an effective and fun cheap setup
When I get out the sissy stick, it's the lowest cost one I throw.
6'10" BPS Extreme and 2500 Symetre. Total cost on sale and after discounts was around $120 or so.
Frog combo is also around that price, Fenwick Venture and Revo S-L
I have a 5ft daiwa combo with mono that I think was about 17 dollars if that. I use it to catch peacock bass using a small jig.

I'm glad it helped, I hate paying retail and if you can wait you will get a good deal, expect to see the Fenwick HMG to be around $79 - $89, the Lews should end up close also look for the same Procyon rods as well as the Ballistic from Daiwa, *** just blew the Ballistic out for $65 and with the new Lexa rods I think the procyon may be going to get axed, I was going to just take mine back as it was a gift but I decided to try it and it surprised me, especially since it has a 5 year warranty and it performs incredibly well, much better than what the price suggests. Be patient and you will be rewarded.
Got an old cranking rod at a yard sale for $6.
Added a Johnny Morris reel for $139.
Broke it on Lake Anna when it got between boat and a some pilings in the back of Contrary Creek.
Got it fixed.
Use it all the time for pond fishing and have also brought it along in tournaments.
Least expensive combo in my boat is a Rainshadow ISB822.5 with a Stradic 2500 (the old pearl white one). Never worked up a price on the rod and I think the reel was in the $80 range.
AbuGarcia silvermax combo at Walmart $60. Use it for 1.5 squarebills.
Shimano Sedona FD 2500 / Scimitar 7' M combo. Purchased both new, the reel was $59.99 and the rod was $39.99. The reel is just "ok" in my opinion, nothing wrong with it at all it just isn't anything special or particularly fun to fish with. It does have a very nice drag and the bottom line is it gets the job done without fail. I'm actually more impressed with the rod, I really really like it, especially for it's price.
I use this as my "pond hopping" spinning combo mostly, or when I go with friends on their boats. I keep my better gear for use strictly on my boat. I use it for any lure or technique that calls for spinning gear, and a few that don't. I've got it spooled with PP 20# and usually run a 15# fluoro leader.
yes, I do have a college fund but not saving for a house. I also have a car so i don't have have to worry about that either. On 9/5/2013 at 7:32 AM, DogBone_384 said:Not to sound like a parent, but I am.... You said you were 16 in the 1K thread, are you saving for College, or your own home?

Quantum PT Tour Edition I paid $65 for and a *** black *** I paid $50 for

I'm going to show this to my daughter.... if she'll take her face away from her iPad for a minute....
6'6" Quantum "Tournament Grade" rod ($30) with a mitchell 300 ($25). Bullheadin' gear.

Back 45 years ago (or thereabouts was the last time I went bullheadin') my reel was a Mitchel 300 as well. No way do I remember its cost or the K-Mart special I used with it.
Least expensive, at cost to me would be a CH50mg $55 on a 6-9 Cumara $60.

Cannot kill the thing, its been packed with mud, blood, and left in the back of a truck for weeks. Still puts the line back on the spool somehow.
Original "Ray Scott" custom rod $120; Shimano Symetre 500 FJ $110.
My Trout setup
5' Berkley Cherrywood Ultra light paired with a Shimano Sienna 1000

Now the BIG question: Yanks or Sox?
I just moved from the Yankee part of the state(southern) to the red Sox nation area(more north) it's funny how a few miles north can change who they like.
Originally I'm just a kid from Jersey 20 minutes from NYC. When I moved more north recently I put on camo's and went to a local deli. A state worker there called me a hick as I walked by. I fooled them all being a kid from Jersey so the joke is on them.
It's a good thing knowing I can fit in and blend in anywhere.
I moved from Jersey at 11yo. We moved to southern ct.
I figure with early am fishing in the dark till dawn since we have bears all around us here I may have to woop one with my fishing rod someday. I'm not going to use an expensive rod on a bear wooping. I do carry a magnum when fishing in the dark.
I was fishing at one spot just before dawn and I heard a bear hooting. They hoot because they can't call 1-800-collect. It's three short hoots followed by a longer dragged out hoot. Remember this it could save your life someday.
My camp in vt is to in the heart of black bear country. When they come by my camp hootin I let them pass. Once I hear them across my valley hootin I chime in and hoot back.
Minutes later there at my camp.
Please remember this hoot, it's three short hoots, followed by one long hoot. If you wait you might get hoots from different directions because two of them are talking to each other. Bb
I just purchased 18 new spinning and bait caster rods from fish and save.com
I don't need expensive rods to fish with. If it wasn't for our sponcers and a few other sights having deals and clearances on tackle I wouldn't be fishing. I save $$ on rods to spend it on lures that's where I put my $$.
My first baitcaster, Shakespeare combo from Walmart. Paid 60 bucks.
One of my personal favorites is my 5'6 Light Abu Garcia Cardinal STX combo ($80) and I have it rigged with 6lb suffix siege. I have caught more bass on this rod than my other expensive $300+ rods just because I can take it in tight quarters lol.
Baitcast:
Rod: 6'6" M Abu Garcia Vendetta ($30)
Reel: Abu garcia Black Max ($50)
Total: $80
Spinning:
Rod: 6'6" ML Berkely Tactix ($35)
Reel: Abu Garcia Cardinal ($40)
Total: $75
Cheapest combo for bass fishing would be an Ethos 7' MH for $39 and a Pro Qualifier for $60. Cheapest other combo is a BPS Micro Lite 7' ML spinning rod for $29 and a Shimano Sienna 2500 for $29.

...the 9 pound bass was free
thats one sexy bass!!!!!!!
Rod: Daiwa MHF Strikeforce ($30)
Reel: Abu Garcia Silvermax ($60)
Total = $90
Looking to upgrade the rod soon though. It's not a very good one, but it's still a Daiwa and for $30 it's done an ok job.
7'7 Cumara H. 89.00. Got it from TWs Xmas sale a year ago paired with an Lews Speed Spool 79.00bucks from my local tackle shop. 170.00 bucks ain't bad all.
Abu C4 reel, Loomis Green inshore rod. Reel was 30 and rod was 50 a year ago at a divorce sale. 80 bucks is even bettrler. This a flounder/striper setup.
Gander Vortex Spin Rod-15$ On Sale
Okuma Avenger 35 reel-19$ On Sale
Caught my PB on this setup lol...
I'm still using my Shimano Clarus baitcasting rod. It was paired with a Citica, now a Curado E7.
Team Daiwa V ($79) Daiwa Tatula ($103, $135 after bearing upgrades)
I think my least expensive combo is one of my frog set ups, Its a BPS graphite series 7'6"H/F (19.99 shipped), and a Daiwa strikeforce reed for around 50. Over the past three seasons I have landed more 5+ lb bass with this set up then any of my other combos... For this year though I have upgraded my frogging reels to Lews Superdutys.
Mitch
An ultralight combo composed of a 5'0" Ugly Stik 2-pc spinning rod paired with a Daiwa Crossfire 1000 series spinning reel. Total combo cost $30. Best fish so far on it is an 18.5" chain pickerel.
Shimano sellus spinning rod ($50) and pflueger trion ($39). I use it for little jighead and twister tails. Fun fishing. Trion is very underrated reel which even comes with a spare spool. Just as smooth as my president and would buy another one if I needed another spinning outfit.
My Abu Garcia ProMaxII combo- Got it on Amazon for 99.00. its my goto Shakey head set up- flawless for its job. I have a couple cheepies (Shakespeare) that I wonder why I hang on to...
Lews Tournament Speed Spool/Powell Max 683c, but I also only have 5 combos.
Powell Diesel Glass Cranking rod 70$ and Gen 3 Abu REVO SX 160$
