Goose52 pointed out in a current thread about "best" reel to him it would be any reel with a 9 lb bass on the end of the line.
This got me thinking about some milestone bass that I have caught over the years and what reel, rod , lure and line was used to catch those bass and thought this might be a good topic.
12 lb 4 oz northern strain LMB, Lake Casitas in 1971, Jan 18 early morning. Fenwick 6' graphite rod, Ambassadeur 5000C reel, Trilene XT 12lb line, my new custom jig with purple vinyl skirt and purple Pedigo L3 pork rind trailer. Fishing a major point near the dam area in about 15' of water.
18 lb 11 oz Florida strain LMB, lake Casitas in 1981, Feb 9 mid morning. Lamiglas 6'6" graphite rod, Ambassaduer 4500C reel, Trilene XT 10 lb line, same jig tied with 3 color bucktail hair black/purple/brown with custom L3 barn red pork rind trailer. Fishing the same major point where the 12lb 4 oz bass was caught.
19.3 lb FLMB, lake Castiac in 1993, Mar 3 mid morning Lamiglas 6'10" graphite rod, Daiwa TD-X 105HA reel, Big Gsme 12lb line, same color hair jig and purple trailer used to catch the 18lb 11oz Casitas bass. Fishing a spot I call the old folks home on the ski arm, mid morning in light rain about 18' of water.
Tom
Tom - some great memories for you and some classic gear !
While I now own Antares, Calais, Conquest, Shimano DC, PX Type R, etc., reels and NRX, Legend Extreme, etc. rods....my 9.54 LMB PB was caught on a St. Croix Premier 7' mf rod, a BPS Pro Qualifier reel, and an Academy H20 lipless crank tied to 10lb Yo-Zuri UltraSoft line - all "value" equipment...
Casitas has produced a number of monster bass over the years, hard to beat a lake that stocks trout 9 months out of the year.
6'6" St. Croix Triumph / Shimano Sahara / 6lb mono. Caught on a green pumpkin t-rigged senko.
13.86 ( dang, I still haven't been able to break it and for what I fear it ain't gonna happen soon ... nor later for that matter ) with:
Berkley Trilene Big Game 10 lb test
Berkley Lighting Rod LR16 5'6" ( yup, pistol grip )
AbuGarcia Ambassadeur 521 XLT Plus reel
Rapala Shad Rap SR7 SD ( still got it, it's all beat up but still catches fish )
Wrb you should be in the top 25 all timers with that 19lber correct? And it seems like you need to cast a spell on one of those jigs and send it my way.?
and to add my pb was a Virginia slobberknocker that I caught on a recoil guide loomis 7' heavy, curado I, 20lb super sniper and a 3/8 custom flipping jig
Caught my PB on a 7 Foot Loomis IMX JWR paired with an Abu Garcia Revo STX 7.1:1.
Lews lfs speed spool on a field and stream tec spec black 6'6" medium fast with 30lb braid. Caught her on a jerkbait.
Wow. I see I need to start taking notes....daily. My memory isn't anywhere near what it use to be. PB (a dink by any standard) is a 7.2 lb. while visiting relation in Florida. Rod was a 7' MH Falcon Original. Reel? I take different ones most years. Might have been a Gen 1 STX-L. If so, it was spooled with 40# Performance. But that is only a guess, and maybe not a close one. If another reel, it would have been 12# mono.
Mine was on a Abu veritas 6'9" with a Revo S lined with 15# Yozuri, fishing a 10 zoom worm in cottonmouth color with a 1/4oz tungsten weight. Not a monster to some standards (7# 13oz). But the way I see it I have a chance to best it with every cast.
I caught a 8-9lb LM on a 7' Berkley Lightning Spinning rod with a Shimano Syncopate with 15lb braid and a super spook jr.
7lb 3oz. Powell 703c with Revo STX spooled with yozuri hybrid 12lb. Carolina rigged big bites baits Kriet tail lizard green pumpkin.
Quantum Tournament Grade combo 7' MH rod and baitcaster. I've caught my PB and third biggest bass ever on it and it cost $70. They've both been retired.
PB was 12lb XL with a $3, 3/8oz double chrome willow, white spinnerbait from Sportsman's Warehouse. 4" Mister Twister chartreuse & silver flake grub trailer and a 1/0 Gammy red trailer hook. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of bass I've ever caught on a spinnerbait she was the first to ever get hooked by the trailer hook. I've never had one get it after her either.
Tom still has me by 10lbs. Well, 11.2lbs actually, but who's counting? I suck lol.
PB LMB was caught on 5/18/15. It weighed 7lbs even. I was fishing with my brother. Local reservoir.

I actually decided to load the freezer with Crappie that day, I only Bass fished at one spot on the way back to the ramp when I caught her. Makes me wonder how I would've done had I been Bass fishing all day.

I caught my pb this spring on my yak with no scale. The rod was a megabass x7 extreme mission, reel was td ito, line was 30lb power pro with 12lb fluoro leader and lures was a white zman chatterbait. As I was reeling the lure back in I saw her mouth open right at the yak. It was not the most memorable fight, but she was a beauty.

Caught my PB Larry on a MH/F Veritas with a banned reel on a black /blue Chigger-Craw.
My PB Smallie came on a Kistler Helium M/XF, also with a banned reel on a wacky rigged 4" smoke Senko.
I don't have official weights/lengths on a lot of my best fish because I caught them whenever I was a teenager, fishing with my father and grandfather, so I can only go off what they've told me. But here's some bests from recent years.
2015 - 5lb 1oz. Largemouth - Daiwa Zillion 4.9:1, Dobyns Champion 765CB, Sunline Sniper 12lb, Rapala DT10 craw color
2015 - 4.4lb. Smallmouth - Shimano 13 Mentium, St. Croix Avid 7' M-F, 14lb. Sunline Sniper, Keitech 4.8" Swing Impact Fat on a 1/2oz. swimbait jighead
2016 - 22 7/8" Smallmouth, 3.6lbs (fresh post-spawn) - Shimano 13 Mentium, St. Croix Avid 7' M-F, 16lb. Sunline Sniper, Keitech 4.8" Swing Impact Fat
Mid 2000's - 21 3/4" Smallmouth (no weight) - Shimano Curado Bantam, BPS Extreme 6' MH, 40lb. braid, Rapala Skitter Pop frog color
6' MH/F Shimano Jimmy Houston Signature Series rod with a Johnny Morris Signature series reel. I had it spooled up with 12 lb Trilene XT and I was slinging a 3/8oz. Terminator Super Stainless spinnerbait with double colorado blades. It was in their bleeding bait series so it had a small built in red trailer. - PB 21 3/4" 6.5 lb Largemouth
Same setup as above PB, but this time it was a 3/8 oz Terminator T-1 in clown color. PB 20 3/4" 5 lb smallie
This one tied for my PB. I caught it using my St. Croix LTB 6'10" ML/XF Dropshot rod paired with an Abu Premier 30. I was using 20 lb power pro run to a 6 lb Berkley 100% Fluorocarbon leader. VMC 2/0 Spinshot hook that held a 4" Berkley Bottom Hopper Jr. This one was just a hair shorter at 20 1/2" but weighed in at 5lbs even again.
First time (5.40 #'s a couple years ago)
Pflueger President 30, 7'0" MHF BPS Tourney Special, 15lb Power Pro braid. Wacky rigged Green Pumpkin Stick-O.

13 Conc. A, 7'2" HF Tatula, 20lb Sunline Sniper FC, Lethal Weapon IV Green Pumpkin Orange Swim Jig with Green Pumpkin Kietech 3.8 as a trailer.
5-12: Avid AVS63MLXF, Shimano Stradic CI4 2500, 6 lb. Invisx, Crosstail Shad on a drop shot rig.
An Abu Garcia 5600 C3 on an old 6'6" heavy Daiwa rod. I was using a black jitterbug with 15 pound Big Game. I was reeling in as soon as the bait hit the water with no luck so I changed the retrieve up a bit. I cast out and let the jitterbug sit until the waves were gone around it. When I engaged the reel the bait moved a little and I had a new PB of 6-02 lb.

I was 8 years old when I caught my PB. It was 22 inches long and pre spawn on Dead Lake in MN. Didn't have a scale to weigh it. It was caught on a Berkley Power Lizard on jakerhead. The reel was a old Shimano Solstace and the rod was 7 foot medium Cabelas House brand rod with probably IM-2 graphite. The combo was about $40 tops and it was my first spinning rod ever that I was given as birthday gift. The picture is on a Polaroid if I can find it in a scrap book somewhere.

Well I was just off a bad outing. Started looking at stuff I hadn't thrown and saw this. (I didn't pick this lure it came in my Lucky tackle box.) Really I don't throw this kind of lure but decided that day what the hell. Sure enough threw it like 3 times on the third cast I stopped as soon as it hit the water and was talking to my partner. Well as soon as I touched the reel she pounced on it. Probably never catch another fish on it.
That is actually a really cool success story from a ltb, and I'm sure you would be still pleased if that was the only one you got, because you made it count.

Small bluegill hit the jig. When I swung the bluegill out of the water, the water swirled. I dropped the bluegill back in and the line slowly moved away. After what seemed like an eternity, my 8lb personal best. The hook was barely stuck in the corner of the mouth.
I still have the rod and reel setup. My children use it (as well as me) and I always explain it's importance.
The bass was released. I have a picture.

Talk about wrong gear for the bait huh? But when out of the country and not properly prepared, you do what you have to do. I have since changed all of my travel gear to better suit this situation, yet have not topped the bass. Maybe I should try that horribly wrong setup again and let her catch me "off guard"

10 pounds and 14 ounce bass, 61/2 ft Berkeley amp rod, bps pro qualifier reel. I was using a chart use/blue spinnerbait on 12 lb big game
11 pounds and 5 ounces bass, 7 ft mhf bass pro shops carbon lite , curado 201 g, using a horny toad on 14 pound big game
11.4 lbs, 27 3/4" x 16:...Curado E7 and St Croix Avid 7' Med pwr fast action. Trying out the alberto leader knot for the FIRST time that day using 30lb braid (forget which kind, probably spiderwire stealth as I got a bulk spool cheap) and a 12lb yozuri hybrid leader. Managed to get her away from a laydown out into open water. There she found and wrapped the line on a horizontal log directly in front of the boat that I didnt know was there. For what seemed like an eternity I had to listen to the tensioned piano wire like "twing, twing, twing" sound of that fish rubbing the line. With a new leader knot that I didnt trust, a med action rod, frayed line, I couldnt do much as far as leaning on the fish. I just stood there talking and audibly petitioning our creator to let me get her in. After what seemed like forever (but was likely all of 20 seconds) the line goes slack, I quickly reel up and thank God almighty she was still on.
Seemingly I'm not one to catch a break hunting and fishing. Have a buddy who randomly hooks into 4' gar on crappie jigs, has trophy deer approach while hes dropping a deuce, etc. He was broke once and played the lotto on his last 5 bucks. Won $750... Horse shoe in both pockets. I have to go after it hard and put in time and pay close attention to gear and whatnot. But that day things went my way. The alberto knot has been a staple in my arsenal ever since.
September 1998, dont remember the rod or the reel but it was a baitcaster set up. the line was 12 lb Super Silver Thread mono. hook was/still is Gamakatsu 3.0 offset shank worm hook. unpainted 3/16 oz bullet and a 6" Renegade curly tail worm in Fall Pumpkin Pepper flake. i was fishing a roadbed when a small school of shad appeared on the surface. i threw in towards them, my line sank, stopped, then started moving off. she was 8.6 lbs and i have not landed anything close to that since.

Is it at all disheartening for years (and in some cases, decades) to pass and still not catching another PB? I'm guessing the answer is "no," and that the potential to break that PB is what keeps most guys hooked.
I don't generally think about a PB when I'm fishing. I came close to breaking a decade old PB LMB a few years ago. One ounce shy. I was really happy to get that fish, and I have a picture of it (see above).
I broke my PB SMB twice in the same year. My partner catching a 6-0 right after my 5-12 took the air out of, a bit. I think his PB SMB is over 7.
Today: I was throwing toads with double hooks into pads. I was using a Lews custom lite magnum grass with a TP reel with 50# power pro.
Hooked a giant.. Fought him for 10 minutes then lost him at the boat with the net just ready to slide under him. Potentially a state record largemouth.
Been dwelling on it since it happened ?
