New Dobyns Kaden rod 2024

fishing user avatarSteve S reply :

Anyone hear about the new rods Dobyns is doing a test run on? They told me they are between a Sierra and Champion for only $120 shipped. Any thoughts

fishing user avatarfishballer06 reply :

It was just announced in the newsletter this past week. They're selling 100 of each model to testers at a discounted price to see what people think of them before they are released to the public.

Any info from the newsletter on them?

fishing user avatarkayaking_kev reply :

I have the 744c on the way. I will post pictures when it gets here.

It is named after Garys grandson Kaden.

AA Cork Split Handle, except the 765FLIP which will be full handle

Fuji Reel seat.

SeaGuide XO Guides

The thread wraps are reportedly red and look awesome. The logo can be seen below.

There are 100 of each of the 12 models for customers to test, but they must give feedback on them. Some are sold out already, like the 735cb. They will be numbered 1-100.

They are supposed to be released in the middle of the year sometime.

They cost $100 + $20 for shipping and you can order multiple models.

They are said to retail for twice that.

You must call their office at 903-919-8028 and give them your name, address, model # you want and credit card #.

I've heard they are made of the same hardware as the Champion XP series, but with better blanks more suited for bottom contact baits. I've also heard they were going to replace the Sierra Series, but they decided not to remove the Sierras right now.

New Blank Material, SeaGuides XO guides, cork. Bunch of new lengths and powers. The $179 price tag on the test ones is wrong, disregard that. I have 4 on their way to me. ????

fishing user avatarColumbia Craw reply :

The news letter states there are twelve models and a limit of 100 per model is being produced. They are serialized to track them. They are warranteed. All are cosmetically correct.  The anticipated MSRP will be 179.99 ish so this is a half price offer to the customer via Dobyns.  Gary is looking for feed back before he makes the plunge to add anther line up.  The models were not listed.  This is a great opportunity.  You must have to call for model options although the fury series is probably close. I'm rod poor so I'll wait to see what happens. My 805CB glass should be here today.

That was fast Kev.

Do you think the 712sf would be good for mainly Ned rigging 1/16oz jigs (maybe some dropshottung and mojo rig too but 90% Ned rigging)? I was going to go for a 6’6” fury but these seem like a really good deal

fishing user avatarkayaking_kev reply :

I was talking to Gary over a month ago about Panfish Rods, because he just released one for the Colt series that was 6'0 in August and he and another guy kinda let it slip that there was a new series coming out and it would have a 7'0 Panfish rod in it, but they wouldn't say much else other than they were just waiting on the shipment to come in.

I kind of got impatient and got the St.Croix Panfish rod anyway, so I ordered the Kaden 744c instead, but I do need a Dobyns Dropshot rod for my collection and I'm wondering if that KD711sf would also make a decent secondary panfish rod? What do you all think? But then again that 745c is tempting also.

It should be ok, but if you do much dropshotting, I would consider the 711sf. And, I would definitely get one of these over the Fury.

I plan on putting the Fuego on my 744c, but I also might see how the Concept Z looks on it too. It depends on how red the guide wrappings are. Right now, the Concept Z don't look too bad on the orange of the Extreme HP.

I don't think they will have those models, at least not right away. The series is supposed to be designed more for bottom contact fishing and the 735CB was thrown in there because a lot of people have been asking for a 735 graphite cb rod, since there is only a 735 Glass model right now. I think everyone loved the Sierra and Champion Series for reaction baits and Gary wanted to introduce a better blank for bottom baits in that price range, for those not wanting to spend the money on the Extreme or Xtasy.

fishing user avatarColumbia Craw reply :

795SB is a Fury and the 805CB glass is a Champion.  I didn't order any Kadens.  I'm Dobyns poor already.

I decided to bite as well, ordered a 700SF for crappie and perch fishing as soon as the lakes are open here sometime in April. I still want a shorter UL/L rod but I figured I'd give this new line a shot. It'll be my first Dobyns rod.

Update as of this morning:  The 735CB was sold out quick.  The other models are still in stock but the 744 and 745 are getting very low.  About 300 to 400 were shipped out yesterday.  BTW, if you buy multiples the shipping is a flat twenty dollars regardless if you purchase one or seven. They have big tubes I guess.

Gary Dobyns on the Kaden Series, posted last night.

"Explaining the Kaden Series.  Guys, I have issues. When a new material comes out, I must play with it. Can't help myself. Along with this, my factory owner had a new design he wanted to play with. So we started messing around. When I think something is better, the fisherman in me has to have it. Probably sounds corny but it's true. I get myself in a bind at times and the Kaden Series is prime example. Where this rod will fall into the line up, is still unknown. If it's as good as I think it is, I'll fit it in somewhere. This rod may change too, it depends on the feed back. Maybe it'll need full handles, maybe different guides or reelseats, maybe it needs to be pink :)  I've never built a series and asked for feedback from our customers. I'm anxious to see how it works. Please send comments and ideas to reviews@dobynsrods.com  This address will be active in a few days. I'll make a post when it's active. Thanks in advance for the info and help.  I'll really be looking at it hard. THX!!!"

fishing user avatarkayaking_kev reply :

Got my 744c today. Overall it's a nice rod, but I do have some small complaints.

I wish there was some detail on the blank between the split grip like on the other series, it's kinda of plain.

I wish the red trim on the guide wrapping went on every guide, not just the first one.

I had some epoxy filled in on one of the bottom of my guides, which bothered me the most, but shouldn't affect anything and can probably easily be removed with a little heat.

I like the feel, the red color, the split grips, the reel seat, the balance, the tip, and we will see how the guides hold up, don't know much about them.

My Honest First Impressions

I haven't actually fished with the rod yet and that's the most important thing. I'm by far no expert, but I do own 8 Dobyns Rods, including two Xtasys, one Extreme, and three Champions and others to compare it to. These are my first impressions of the feel and looks of my new Kaden 744c prototype after having it for 24 hours.

What I like about it.

The action feels really nice and the 744c seems like it's going to be a great all around rod.

It has a really nice tip with a strong backbone, but closer to a Medium Heavy rather than a Heavy power.

The cork looks really nice and surprised me on how well it felt. It doesn't seem like AA cork, it seems better than the Fury and Champion XP's and very close to the Extreme HP's cork.

Of course it balances great, it's a Dobyns.

The red color really pops, I really like it, and it looks really nice with a Fuego or any other red reel.

What I think needs improved so far.

The detail, besides the red color, the rod is plain, the blank isn't sanded, there needs to be some detail between the split grip on the handle like on every other Dobyns rod I have and also on the logo section of the blank if it's going to be near $200. I'm sure that helps make it a little lighter, but it looks cheaper than the Fury to be honest, it even has the same font as the Fury, but the Fury at least as some detail on the handle between the split grip.

Conclusion

It's still a nice looking rod compared to most other rod brands, just not as detailed as other Dobyns rods, but as long as this new material on the blank lives up to advertisement, it will be well worth the price. I can always add my own detail on the handle from Mudhole.

Thanks! Yep, no Sierra or Colt, and the Savvy and Coalition were before my addiction. I would like at least one of each series, but I'm not really needing another rod for anything, I already have a couple of Lew's and Shimano rods that will probably get sold. I try to convince myself that I could use a 735 Sierra for frogging and just use the 755 Xtasy for Jigs and a Colt 705cb for jerkbaits, but that's what I use my Fury for.

fishing user avatarBurke reply :

Received the 735CB & 700SF yesterday. When I first held the 735CB, I was actually impressed with  the short  handle on  it. It was just perfect for me. I just wish it was full cork, like all of my dobyns rods.

The  700SF is going to be a hoot for me. It's just way better than my Powell Max. I might just give that one away to a friend's son to fish with.

Got my 712sf this week and really liked the feel of it. My reel seat was out of alignment to the first guide though so they are swapping me out for a new one. Great customer service! The balance fees good, the rod is really light and has a better fee in hand than my 7’ Med Tatula. The one thing that I feel should be improved just from a short amount of hands on is the reel seat knob. The knob doesn’t feel very sturdy compared to other rods I have. I do think this series will be great and am really excited to fish some Ned rigs on it.

fishing user avatarJLBBass reply :

My 700SF is about the same power as my SC Premier 6' MF. Definitely not an ultralight power... Not even what I'd call light. But it is a foot longer so it will be more noodly near the tip so I'm thinking it'll still be a decent crappie rod for use with 1/16oz baits on the very lowest end, likely more often with 1/8oz.
