After years of using monofilament and fluorocarbon line for all my flippin'/pitchin' techniques i am ready for a change. This past weekend i hooked into a bass that i am 100% sure was my new PB(atleast 11lbs) while pitchin' a field of hydrilla/cattail mix. It wrapped me up in a clump of slop so i tried to winch it out as i usually do. Then, my 25lb BPS XPS fluoro snapped, i almost cried you guys! So, i have decided to switch to braid. Most of the lakes i fish are kind of a greenish tea color. What size braid do you guys recommend i use. Also, what brand is the best so to speak?
just happened to me the other day. but i was actually using braid but he wrapped around the post and it cut the line
For flipping/pitching, go with 50lb power pro, you won't be disappointed.
i like sufix braid, nothing under 30#
I think the Power-Pro is the best braid. As for line size I wouldn't go below 50 lbs.
Would 65lb Power Pro braid be too big? I will also be pitchin' thick lily pad fields.
With Shimano's purchase of Power Pro, if you keep your eyes open you can find a deal on the line.
im a shimano guy 100%
but diawa samerai braid,is the best thinnest smoothest i have used.i think suffex is very close.welcome to the braid family 8-)
I will be dropping by Bass Pro this Sat so i will check the different braids out i guess!
Power Pro, Suffix, NOT FIRELINE. 50# or 65#
Samurai and Sufix.
as i have said before, powerpro is from the stone age.the new berkley fireline braid (not regular fireline) in 65 lb is my choice.
The new Samurai braid is the best, then Power Pro. I did not care for the new Fireline braid at all.
Later,
I have had problems with wind knots when using power pro, suffix to me is the best!
I use either Stren Sonic Braid, or Super Braid, Sonic is the limpest braid that I have ever used but doesnt hold its color very long but its strong and limp. Super braid holds its color for just about ever and is strong as steel cable. I might get bashed for this but I think Power Pro is crap. From my experience its stiffer than wire leader and doesnt cast very well.
QuoteWould 65lb Power Pro braid be too big? I will also be pitchin' thick lily pad fields.
No not at all, you would be fine with 65lb Power Pro. And, as somebody else said, do not buy Fireline, Fireline Crystal, Fireline Braid, all of it sucks IMO.

I don't usually here bad stuff about Power Pro! I don't need casting distance for flippin'/pitchin' though. I guess i will check out Suffix too!

From the stone age? I tried Firline a while ago and it is absolute garbage IMO! I had it break on little snags so i bought new spool, same thing!
I think there is some merit in checking out one of the new 8 strand braids rather than the older 4 strand varieties. (Several have been mentioned above.)
The only bad thing i keep hearing about Power Pro is that the color does not last very long! How about Spider Wire camo?
Power Pro all the way!!! Me and all my buddies use it. Great stuff. I use 30lb on baitcast and 20lb on spinning gear. One of my buddies loves trying everything. He changes braid, mono and fluoro every week and he always complains and comes back to power pro. As for the color it will fade but i dont think it changes anything.
65# POWER PRO!!!!!
i too love and only use Power Pro , but if you are gonna use something else , use a SPECTRA braid . all those other materials just don't last . you will here of people having Power Pro braid on there reel for YEARS !! it just flat out performs when you need it and won't fall apart like other braids ....

not regular fieline!!!regular fireline is not a braid.the new fireline braid is totally different!!!
I can't stand Sufix braid. I tried it once and striped it off my reel. The stuff is so bright it sticks out like a sore thumb. Still the best I've tried is Stren Super Briad (no Sonic Braid IIRC). Fireline Braid looks good, too. I'm going to try that next.
im getting ready to go to the potomac in a few weeks and will be using braid for the first time in a long time also...would you guys recomend a fluro leader or just tie straigt to the hook??i would like to use the smallest weight that i can safely pull fish from the slop with??what weight would you recomend...and is the spider wire braid any good? skeet seems to like it lol..
I've used Stren Super braid. I love it. The line does fade a little too soon but it is round vs ( the dental floss stuff ) and casts well. I thought that both Power Pro and Spider wire looked like floss and would split / shred easy.
i use suffix braid 40#......
i love the stuff, and really cant think of any complaints i could make for it.......
thats my vote!!!
Well, it looks like it comes down to Suffix or Power Pro! Since i hear Suffix fades slower, i will probably go with that one!

Can anybody chime in and explain this to me? Which lines have the 4 strand and which have the 8?
Oh thank goodness when it said you were switching I thought this was gonna lead to an appearance on the Jerry Springer Show
my mistake
10# PP freshwater
15# pp inshore salt
20# pp offshore salt
30# gorilla braid offshore trolling
QuoteI have had problems with wind knots when using power pro, suffix to me is the best!
I had the wind loops all the time too when using a spinning reel. switched to suffix and haven't looked back. I use lighter 20# too.
8 strand braid are fireline braid,diawa braid,spiderwire ultracast(imho stinks)
6 strand braid is sufix
4 strand braids are powerpro and most others
4 strand braids are not as round as 8 strand braids.they are not as smooth and make more noise.they dig into the spool more.
6 strand sufix is an improvement.sufix is ok but the color bled all over my reels.
8 strand is the way to go.a lot of guys also like the diawa braid.i think it is to soft imho.
My research shows that Suffix is an 8 strand as well? Anyway, i bought a couple spools of Suffix today and a couple of Power Pro. Since my bro fishes with me most of the time, we are going to test them back to back! THANKS A LOT GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hear the samurai braid breaks well under its listed strength and at 70 bucks for 300 yrds aint worth it IMO
My first complaint already about both Power Pro and Suffix is that the color bleeds all over the reel and rod!!! Not cool at all!!!! >
It'll stop eventually. Suffix is better though and uk it, power pro feels like it is to stiff. I do like the Fireline braid, wish i went with a 30# instead of 50# it seems to heavy.

I hope so man! I got all the line in 65lb test! I will be fishing some serious lily pad/hydrilla mix fields tomorrow at first light!
Also, can anyone tell me the correct way to tie a double palomar knot? I have heard three different ways so far!!!!!

I think i will go with this one man! The other version i saw was double the overhand knot! THANKS
The new fireline is very good ,but power pro is a proven winner in my books.
Mike
Tuf line XP (moss green) 50#

i told you it would.
65# Power Pro is what i use, have never had a break off as of yet!! Looking forward to something that heavy to pull my line.
i used to use power pro on one of my baitcasters and liked it a lot but when throwing heavy lures and occasionally when fish on it would dig into itself and backlash on next cast... i the spooled up the reel with about 25 yards of mono then power pro and it helped a lot with the digging. i like fireline now i dont have any problems with it, but i do want to put suffix on a reel to test it out.
a friend of mine recomended the bass pro shops braid...has anyone tried this?
Well after a full day of fishing the Suffix and Power Pro, neither are a walk in the park! They both dig into their selves pretty bad. Both leak color all over everything. Both are a PITA when they kink and both make a horrific noise when coming through the guides! But...................i got a hit from a 7lb 6oz bass in thick pads/hydrilla and had absolutely no problems horsing it in. So, i will leave the braid on for now i guess!
strip it off and put on 65 lb fireline braid.no color bleed on your reels and no digging.hardly any noise through the guides compared to the other 2.

Look here dodge guy, i am going to order some right now and it better be as good as you say it is!!!!!!!!!!! Sounds too good to be true! How do i know which to order? I tried FireLine Crystal once(hated it) is that the same thing?
fireline came out years ago and it's a fused line not a braid.it frays and unravels terribly.they recently came out with fireline braid.it is new and says braid on the box.crystal is just white fireline with all the same issues.you sound like a brand new braid user so let me tell you that braid is a completely different animal.it requires changing the way you fish because it has no stretch and is limp.i have used braid for approx. 16 years now and have been through a lot of different brands.none of them are perfect.i truely believe berkley got it right with the new fireline braid.i feel it's as good as it gets with braid.here's a picture of the box.they also make a tracer braid with alternating colors so you can see it better.i personally don't like the idea but others may.i can fill 4 narrow spool baitcasters with a 300 yard box of 65 pound test.that's around 10 bucks a reel.
Yes sir, you are correct! I am brand new to braid. After loosing the fish of a lifetime with fluorocarbon i made the switch! I will try this FileLine though! Also, will braid cut into Alconite Fuji guides? THANKS
no it will not cut into alconite guides or sic guides.i have a johnny morris elite with recoil guides on it that i keep checking.i've heard of issues with recoils and powerpro but i have not had any yet.with braid you don't have to gorilaa set hooks and i suggest you loosen your drag a bit.the no stretch can break rods with gorilla sets and it can straighten and put holes in a bass's mouth during a fight.you might want to use superline hooks in heavy cover.
I was absolutely amazed by this today! I was using SuperLine Gamakatsu hooks in heavy cover and i just kinda pulled up and hooked the hawg just right! Well, i ordered two spools of the FirlLine for me and my brother just now! I will post more reviews next weekend! Hope you are right about this stuff! THANKS MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hope you like it.
I have tried a lot of stuff, fireline original(its ok wont use it again) Stren sonic braid(pretty good stuff) Power Pro(old spool from a friend worked pretty good), Spiderwire(old school stuff was ok) and the camo braid its ok as well, I am going to try the new fireline braid most likely in 30# since we dont have any cover here worth 50 or 65!
i use power pro and love it... 30lbs test!
Okay, i finally received the Berkley FireLine braid yesterday! I will say that i am not impressed! It is no better or worse than the Power Pro or Suffix i was using. It is significantly smaller diameter for the same lb test and a little limper than the other two. But it is also weaker and less abrasion resistant IMO. It makes the same noise coming through the guides and leaks the same(if not more) green color all over everything! I guess i am just in shock on all the negatives of braid because i am new to it! But it does give me that extra piece of mind when i hook a pig in the slop! THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR HELP!!!
EXCEPT for dodgeguy who made me spend even more $ on braid..............LOL, just kidding guy!!!!!!!!!!!!
QuotePower Pro, Suffix, NOT FIRELINE. 50# or 65#
I hate to say I told you so but.... ;D. I used Power Pro for a while, then Big Game, but now I've settled on 20# P-Line CXX crystal clear.
Well it's not the same stuff as the old FireLine! It is better than Power Pro though! But not as good as Suffix!

You just said it wasn't better or worse, as well as listing complaints about fireline that I've never had with Power Pro. So how does that mean its better than Power Pro?
Either way, my suggestion for you would be P-line CXX in 20# or 25#. Incredible breaking strength, much better than BPS Flouro. And you don't have to deal with all the things about braid that you dislike, which seems to be a lot.
fireline could never touch power proQuoteWell it's not the same stuff as the old FireLine! It is better than Power Pro though! But not as good as Suffix!
