hey what is the very very best mono line in 8 lb test?

Best at what? Best handling? Best abrasion resistance? Best knot/tinsel strength?
Best for stringing Xmas trees with popped popcorn? I often use stren or trilene xt in 8 lb. About $6 for 330 yds at Walmart. Good for fishing in light veg or open water from the bank.
ok thanks looking for strongest mono cause i don't like the way braid vibrates or moves in water
best meaning closets to fluorocarbon or braid. i ike the way mono feels

i like fishing the lakes in cape cod
I like P Line. Haven't had the greatest luck with Trilene so I experimented and tried a few other kinds and found P Line to work the best.

This will be moved to the fishing line forum.
Most 8 lb test mono is around .011 to .012 diamter, how about .011 diameter 11 lb test Sunline Diefer Armilo Nylon mono, not 8 lb but ranks up there in the superior mono category.

P-line Fluroclear...copolymer with fluorocarbon coating. Get abrasion resistance and some stretch (way less than mono but way more than braid) and get knot/tinsel strength and also the flurocarbon coating helps to disguise it in clear water.

Like Tom said the best Mono line is currently made by Sunline. Defier Armilo for Mono is as close to FC line as you are going to get, but it is relatively expensive. Sunline super natural is less expensive and still has great performance.
There are some good reviews of both of these lines out there so do some research on them.
YoZuri hybrid 8 lb rules.
If you want true mono, I have come to prefer Trilene XL. I know the XT version is supposed to be 'tougher', but I like the limpness and performance of the XL.
I even use XL mono on my jig rod for throwing into timber (12lb) and it holds up fine.
Iron silk. It has much less memory and stretch than regular mono resulting in farther casts, more sensitivity, and better hook sets on long casts. It also seems to be more abrasion resistant and smother than most other monofiliments.
i used to use trilene XL a lot, never had any issues with it but fraying after a little use. but i tried sufix lines and like them better as they dont fray as much as the XL. sufix siege, sufix elite, and sufix promix are lines that i have used a lot the last 3 years or so in various sizes. definitely check out the sufix siege if nothing else...
I think Raul nailed it.

I'm gonna pile on the accolades for YZ, too. It's not my line of choice, but I think you'll find it to be best for what you want. Izorline would be pretty close, as would Silverthread. As with any post about line I make, obligatory recommendation for some KVD L&L conditioner. Pretreat, and use after every trip. Only take a couple squirts.
Yo-Zuri is a hybrid of mono (nylon) and FC jacket, so are calling this mono?

TransOptic is right between the two, love the stuff.

Well, that one word got my attention. Curious why you're obligated to recommend. They pay you to do that, or....?
I use Trilene XT.. I just stick to XT because I've been using it for 25 years now and it's been good to me.
I liked Trilene XL in the past but use YoZuri Hybrid for poppers, some cranks and carolina leaders instead now.

Not at all. I buy a bottle every time I'm in bass pro. I have four or five everywhere. It's a must have for me. It's one of those products that's cheap, says what it does, and does what it says. They used to be a site sponsor, but I don't recall ever getting a free bottle. Which is fine, it's worth it.
I really dislike the " very best" threads. It's so subjective is most cases. The brand I select may be considered garbage by another. I guarantee you that someone has bought line that was on the shelf until the label was redesigned, they tied a crappy knot, had a rough spot on a guide insert, nicked their line on that surgically sharpened hook and so on. The line gets the blame.
Try and find some consensus and consider that a starting point and develop confidence or don't and move on from their. The brand I have confidence in has not been mentioned. A brand that I have used and liked fairly well has. That's in #8 test. There's nothing like getting just enough information to be thoroughly confused.
very helpful thanks. i ordered some of the sun line 11 lb and will check it out this weekend
the brand i like is cajun line red cast. never had any problems with it, i bought some spider wire a while back and after breaking off on a fish and a snag that i couldve gotten with the other, instantly switched,
keep in mind i use the 14 and 17 lb tests for my fishing. landed my 12.4 on this line brand.

That may be true in some cases, but if you read closely, many of the responses are based on years, sometimes decades of experience, and many, many spools worth of line. I've tested and reviewed so many brands and types of lines it's dizzying, and yet I really only use three lines - mostly the same three for many years, save Tatsu, which replaced Invisx for fluoro use. The "best of" threads really are "what's your favorite...," so, play along - what's your favorite?

Okay, J Franco my favorite is Sunline Super Natural. A line I have confidence in and have used for years is Yo Zuri Hybrid. Twenty years ago I would have touted Trilene Big Game as the "best." That was twenty years ago. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. just share a perspective.
Thanks. Haven't tried the Super Natural yet. Always hearing positive reviews about it though.
For the past couple seasons I have been using Spider Wire Ultimate Mono, not EZ mono but Ultimate Mono. The 8lb is .009 diameter so it is thin but the knot strength and abrasion resistance is fantastic and it has very little stretch, if it didn't float I'd think it was fluorocarbon. The only draw back is that it isn't as limp as some monofilaments but it still handles way better than fluorocarbon and it holds up. I normally try new line every year, I'll pick a line diameter and give it a full season but ever since trying the Spider Wire Ultimate Mono, I'm pretty much done trying other lines as I'll stay with it as long as it is being made. That said, I find that 2 spritzes of KVD Line and Lure conditioner makes it handle fantastic and it is a small price to pay for a line this strong. If you don't want to try that, the Suffix Pro Mix is another I like, it has the strength of Trilene XT, which I also like, but it handles more like XL but to me the Spider Wire is tough to beat.
McCoy Mean Green makes some fine mono.
Trilene xl
Berkley big game.
Berkley Big Game for a long time
Is Gamma copoly still worthy of discussion? Just before I drifted away from fishing the unit was sold to a small private group. We're they able to keep the quality and stay afloat?

This thread is 2 years old and the OP never returned to comment about his choice.
FYI Berkley doesn't offer 8# Big Game. Several members suggested 8 lb Yo-Zuri FC hybrid line ignoring the fact it isn't mono, it's co extruded multifilament line that is .011 dia that equals the average 10 lb mono like Big Game.
Comparing apples to oranges is a popular with fishing forums.

Another vote for Yozuri Hybrid. Close enough to mono in many respects. Very strong, abrasion resistant, less stretch than fluorocarbon, doesn’t soak up water, sun resistant, great knots. A little thicker than a lot of lines, drop down to 6 lb if you need to, still very strong.

Sorry Tom, I am a bit confused on what you said about Berkley not offering 8# Big game. Are you referring to regular spool or bulk spools? I have bought bulk spools of 6# and 8# Big Game in both clear and green.
My favorite non fc or braid is pline cxx.

Academy sells Big Game 8 pnd in 1700 yd spool for about 7.00 DrsDrs
Up here in Canada we can get 8 pound Big Game in 1/4 pound spools. They also have 6 pound as well but I think they are old spools cause I can't find any mention of 6 pound Big Game offered on any websites. but my local Canadian Tire has them.

Haven't used Big Game in several years and didn't realize they offer 8 lb, that is news to me.
Tom
I really like Sufix Siege at least around 12-17lbs. It has much less memory than others I've used and is pretty strong as well. Haven't tried it around 8lbs yet, as I've stuck with Big Game for 8lb and 10lb.
Which mono without hybrids, if I said "Stren Original" will I still be aloud into the USA?
Technically, ANY single filament - nylon, fluorocarbon, copolymer, fluorocarbon coated, etc - line can be called monofilament. However, the abbreviation "mono" has come to mean nylon line. When we're looking at lines, I don't really care if YZ or a copoly is not a true mono, modern nylon "mono" is a blend of polymers anyway. They're just all marketed differently. I do not try to lump fluorocarbon in there, though.

+1
Sufix seige, elite, sunline super natural and siglon f
the thing I really like about sufix Siege is that it is a 'tough' abrasion resistant line like Big Game but it is much limper and can be used on Spinning gear no problem
When I tried BG on spinning I didn't like the way it casts (even in 8 pound).
but the Siege is very limp. For this reason its my favorite as it is good on both spinning and BC reels.
Been using XL and XT for almost 30 years with no complaints. Absolute best? Maybe, maybe not. But it has done everything I've ever asked it to and most of the fish I lost were not completely the lines fault; i.e., I didn't check the line and retie like I should have.
I've got a few other brands, but Trilene has been good to me and I always seem to go with it.
Gamma copoly and McCoys are both great. I use to like Yo-zuri hybrid but I had it break in the spool like regular fluoro.
McCoy Mean Green or Original Stren. I use nothing else for mono.
On 9/13/2016 at 7:27 AM, Fisher Guy said:hey what is the very very best mono line in 8 lb test?
Short answer: there is no such thing as the "best mono".
Same for rods, reels, braid, lures, boats, motors, trucks...or anything else...
Use, budget and preferences define what is the best choice for each of us.
Am I the only one that likes Ande?
Most of my reels are spooled with Big Game because it performs well and doesn't break the bank (I replace line often).
To be honest, after using many brands over the years, I really haven't seen a noticeable difference. I do prefer spiderwire on my super ultralite rigs because it's thinner. I can use 6# test and cast like 4#. I will always have a sweet spot for Trilene XT because It was a big thing to me as a kid.
Sunline supernatural is horrible.
Izorline is all u need
Maxima Ultra green
So this is an old thread but here is a good story for you. I take my youngest niece fishing once in a while. We were on a river with some largemouth in it, casting spinners and catching a few. She cast a large Rooster Tail tied on with a Palomar knot and put it in a tree limb well out over the water. After trying everything I knew, the lure was still there. I said Im going to have to break it off. She had a Zebco 202 that I had filled with original Stren 10 lb green.
I pulled with the rod. Stopped so as not to damage that. grabbed the line and pulled. Slipped through my hands. Wrapped the line around my hands and pulled. Really pulled. My hand began to hurt. I wrapped my right hand with my fishing towel and wrapped the line around that. This time I took off walking back into the grass, away from the water.
Now I really put my weight into it. We're pulling on about 30-40 yards of line. The limb was bending severely and I thought, good, Ill just break it off. Nope. Too tough. Now I had to break this line. It was a personal goal now. Wary of getting line in the face, I backed up more and gave it everything I had and then a bit more. POW!!! It sounded like someone shot a .38 revolver 10 feet from my face! Of course I stumbled backward but stayed upright. I looked up to see the line fall away and watch the lure drop into the river!
So I learned 3 things. 1, Sometimes you just got to give a stuck lure some slack. 2, The Palomar knot is a great knot for mono! And 3, in that situation, at that time, with that knot, and the way I was pulling on it, original Stren can be some incredibly tough line. For $5.89 a spool, and it's in every store you can go to, that's the one I'm going with!
Learn to tie strong knots, keep your lures out of the trees and you will be fine. Stren and Trilene has been around a long time. A LONG time. There is a good reason for that. At that price (as of 12-13-19) you can afford to change it out once in a while.
Just mono, I used to use Maxima Chameleon. Now I use Yo-zuri Hybrid for 8 lbs to 14 lbs and Sufix Siege for under 8.
20 or more: Berkley Big Game
If Yo-Zuri hybrid 8 lb test @ .011 diameter is the bench mark for mono lines the term mono is meaningless. Mono (single) or monofilament would cover all single filiment lines except Yo-Zuri hybrid because it's a multiple filament coextruded line if you look at the detailed cross section Yo-Zuri promotes; bundles coploymer core with fluorocarbon outer jacket. All other copolymers and nylon mono lines are blended and extruded as a single filament line.
for the past 4 years I have been using Sunline Defier Armillo Nylon line. Armillo 11 lb test is the same diameter as 8 lb test Yo-Zuri hybrid @ .011 dia. Armillo is a very smooth low memory high strength mono.

I used this line quite a bit when it first came out.
Never disappointed me either.
When it was discontinued, I moved onto something else.
It's still available and in bulk too .

Good thing I have 3000 yd. spools of the two lines I use most...8# and 12#. Don't think I have to worry about running out at my age. Especially since I don't get out several times a month much less several times a week like some of you.

Strange, use Supernatural for my mono needs, never a problem.
I haven't used mono in years but when I did, it was always Stren.
I do use alot of sunline as leaders.
Yes, I'm a Braid addict. Lol
A mono line I think that is way under rated and often over looked is Sufix Elite. I have it ranging from 6lb to 20 lb, and it has virtually no memory, cast's a country mile, good knot strength. The camo version blends in really well with a lot of water that I fish in, I also use the clear. Comes in 330 yard spools which is nice, and very reasonably priced.

Still my favorite, I'm sitting on bulk spools for 6-14 lb test. I probably have a lifetime supply!
I prefer stren for straight mono. Yozuri hybrid for a copolymer. Never used braid before.
I always use eagle claw. It’s about the cheapest thing going and I’ve never had line troubles.
Stren Original. There was a video testing abrasion resistance I believe it was made by SaltStrong. Stren actually beat big game in that test as well as several other competitors fluorocarbon in abrasion resistance. It also casts very well. Been using it since I was a little kid and I can say it has never let me down.
Stren pre dates Trilene mono and one of the first on the market as I recall.
The state of the art mono line in the 60's was Western AN40 and Garcia Royal Bonnyl.
Maxima was one of 1st copolymer mono line and far more abrasion resistant then Stren or Trilene XT. I still use Maxima UG in 5 lb to 8 lb, larger sizes have too high a memory for me, extremely strong line however.
Tom
Maxima ultragreen gets my vote. It has the right combo of attributes that make it great line. I would hesitate to put it on spinning reels as it it fairly stiff and I put braid on all spinning now anyway. Second choice would be the new suffix advance mono handles very similar to UG but slightly less stretch from what I can surmise.
We still be liken' Sunline Super Natural
I have tried a bunch of mono lines;I am addicted to trying different ones. I won't trash lines I haven't liked and I have tried a dozen or so in the last couple years, but I will say that Triline XL for spinning, Big Game for Baitcasting, and P-Line CXX for big swimbaits are my go to lines.
I just ordered two spools of McCoy Mean Green to try. One 6lb for spinning and a 12lb for baitcasting...
Big game..
