Best Bang For Your Buck Spinning Reel 2024

fishing user avatargunsndrums1 reply :

Recently looking over all my tackle and i think i could really use another pole. Ive settled on buying one of the newer uglystick gx2 rod. Looking to upgrade to a good reel instead of the made in china junk ones you get with a shakespeare rod and reel combo. Should i go with a more well known brand like shimano, daiwa, abugarcia etc. or will cabelas or bass pro brand reels work well. I would rather have a good reel for and extra 10 or 20 bucks than junk. Thanks

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

Agreed on the Pflueger. Just depends on what your budget is. The Trion is least expensive at around $30.00, Next would be the President at just under $50.00. And the Supreme will set you back about $60.00. You pick the size. Can't beat the Pflueger quality these days. I believe it has surpassed the Shimano brand, which I have several reels and like them a lot. Shimano is just getting too pricey in my opinion.

Owning several spinning reels with MSRP over $200, most are vastly over priced.  For a freshwater reel a president isn't just a good reel, it excels.

Most guys buy expensive stuff because you get the most bang for your buck by buying quality gear that'll last a while. I don't totally agree with that, but I certainly know some people who use expensive stuff and it runs like a dream.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Buy what you an afford and make you happy. Most if us aren't pros so there's no return. Don't go Into debt or crazy over needing expensive stuff. Buy quality you can comfortably afford and have fun. I love my Stradics, but having said that I'd settle with using a Symetre.  I like them both!  Even though I definitely can feel the difference when I fish them.  (Comfort and smoothness)

I haven't pulled a trigger on a President yet, but with all the rave on BR I might.  My next rod will be a spinning rod, I need another ML so a President might be just the ticket.

Everything this man says is truth. I jumped on the President bandwagon and never looked back. I still have a few other "inexpensive" spinning reels like Abu Orra S's but i'd swap them all out for a few Pfluegers given the opportunity.

Check out the specs on this reel. The Sienna has only 3 ball bearings, where as the President has double that. It is also a bit heavier, if that is of any concern. Like I said, I love Shimano's, but to get the best bang for your buck, the President has it over most of them, in my opinion. :)

"all the input"...is about 95% Pflueger...and I agree 100%. I own 2 Presidents, 3 Supremes and 1 Shimano Symetre and would recommend the Pflueger everyday of the week..

You missed out on the Cabelas $60 Supreme MGX, that reel is a good deal at the $99.00 retail and is great at the current $80 price but it was an absolute steal at 60 bucks. The president is one reel with a graphite frame that I have to say it works and it will last. I'm not a fan of graphite framed casting reels and really don't like spinning reels but my friend has 4 of them and not once has he had any problems, he never cleans or lubes his reels and he has had them for quite a few years, more than 5 and they perform well every time we have fished together, I was going to change my mind on graphite frames until he had a Shimano Caenan go bad after a hard hook set into a snag, after that is was a coffee grinder but his presidents work like a champ.

I think the only difference in the new one is the drag system which I'm okay with the drag system on the old model plus I get a spare spool.and I don't think the new model comes with a spare spool which I like.

fishing user avatarjdl2425 reply :

To the OP, I own two siennas and caught my personal best bass with them. You won't be disappointed with one. For $30, it's a good reel that should last you a long while. You seem to want the sienna, and if that's what you want, go for it.

fishing user avatarshanksmare reply :

If you want a reel that is built like a tank take a look at the Penn Battle. It will stand up to the rigors of saltwater fishing and the challenges that larger fish pose. I don't know of anyone who uses a Phleuger spinner in the salt, but I do know a lot of guys that have switched to Battles over the past 3 or 4 years.

This is another misconception about saltwater fishing....especially inshore.  You don't need to upgrade in size.   If you're fishing for trout, flounder, and reds, with lures, the smaller spinning reels work just fine.   If you're using cut bait and live bait, your odds of hooking up with bigger fish increase, and then you may want to upgrade to a larger reel.   I drop shot for trout, and throw small soft plastics with 30 size spinning reels on medium action rods all the time.

I do have 2 Pfluegers for salt use.  I don't use my Medalist 5000 anymore because of it's 18 ounces but the reel is exceptionally smooth.  I also have an Arbor 50 I use quite a bit mounted on a Quantum blue runner MH rod, this is my main barracuda rig.  It's a pretty nice reel and weighs 12 oz, has good line capacity and drag performance.  The Battles are pretty good and I see a lot of them being used these days, maybe a tad heavy for fresh water anglers to have much interest in them.

I do have 1 3000 size reel for inshore use, nothing at all wrong with that size, but for the most part I prefer the cranking power and a power knob, plus line capacity of a 4000.  My cabo 40 is pretty much used for targeting tarpon and bigger snook fishing the inlet that can produce current up to 12 knots.  From the beach I usually use an Abu soron 40, have two that size, 1 on a med rod the other a mh.

Save your money until you can get something decent and the $30 Sienna isn't it. I have first hand knowledge with those, and from a bad experience years ago I said I'd never buy another Shimano but seeing I had a need for a decent spinning reel for my Grandson, I was looking hard at the Sienna until my friend's brother, who is a manager at our local Cabelas, told me they had so many returned that the store stopped carrying that reel so you have to get one on-line or another store. The gears were ok, bail springs and bearing gave up fast and he told me if you saw how thin the bail spring is you wonder how it manages being used for more than a trip or two but most people who buy that reel are worm dunkers, if you plan to cast and retrieve a lot then find another route or save some more money and get a reel that will last you.

fishing user avatargunsndrums1 reply :

Another competitor to the sienna is the trion, noticed it can hold more line, has more ball bearings, higher max drag, while only sacrificing a little more weight ( which I don't really care about) and only 10$ more. I think I'm going to buy the trion as it seems like it is a price point version of the president with the same quality engineering. It has great reviews on the internet and a few people on the forums have recommended it. I think I made a good choice. Thoughts?

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

Good decision!

fishing user avatarPenguino reply :

Just get the Supreme MGX. You essentially get it for 49.99$ at gander mountain, which is the same price as the trion. It is a huge step above the trion.

fishing user avatar0119 reply :

To me "Bang for the Buck" means durability.  Cheap doesn't last long usually and throw away disposable doesn't bang my buck.  A company that isnt going to obsolete my purchase quickly and will have parts when I want them means everything.  The Penn Battle II is a great idea. Proven and it has a thicker double anodizing finish similar to what Solitude and Abel does to with expensive fly reels.  Penn states they promise to keep parts available for at least 15 years after its discontinued.  That makes your Buck Bang a lot longer than any other manufacturer out there.
