Hey all. Ever used a baitcasting reel that you bought for $125.00 or less and absolutely loved it? I'm in the market and would love peoples advice on their favorite baitcasting reel(s) and why they love them so much. I need a good all around reel. I fish a ton of Jigs and plastics but I'll also throw everything else as well. I'll use the new reel with a 7' medium-heavy rod for LMB and wiper. Thanks!
I like my Daiwa Tatula CTs. Can be found for around $100 on eBay.
Daiwa Fuego can be found here sometimes for $50 and all over eBay in the same range. Daiwa Tatulas can also be found in that range if you do some homework and shop around. I’ve seen a lot of people rave about the Shimano SLX but personally I’m not a fan (I’ve been told I’m weird because of this). I’ve got 3 of the Kastking Royale Legend Elite reels and I love them. They’re $70-$80 and I’ve had zero issues whatsoever. Same thing can be said for the Fuegos I’ve owned in the past though.
My .02, go with the Fuego or Tatula. You won’t be disappointed.

I agree that for the price new, nothing is going to beat either of those. If you've used a BC before and are interested in a certain technique, you could find some used offerings around that price, but not sure what your skill level is, BA.

Owned an XT and man was it a nice reel. Right up until it was stolen lol
As said above Daiwa Fuego CT. eBay $65 range. Used mine heavily last year frogging, ripping lipless out of grass, and flipping. No issues on any held up solid.
Another vote for the Tatula CTs. I also would like to try out some Fuegos myself.
Tatula CT or Shimano SLX are both great choices.
Shimano SLX
Lew's Speed Spool LFS ????
Tatula and Slx are both awesome reels.
KastKing Royale Legend Elite Rage Red ... 8:1:1 ... 69.98 ...
good fishing ...
Fuego, Tatula or SLX.

Another vote for the Lew's.
In the same boat so to speak as you. I think I have decided on the Tatula CT type-R which is exactly at your price point. I would be interested in the SLX but I have a Shimano Citica already. Only difference is it's going on a M/F rod so I wanted something that could handle lighter weight baits. The Tatula 100 was a very, very close second. But I think I've decided on the Type-R with lighter spool, an slightly higher gear ratio. 100 7.1 with 29.8" LPT an Type-R at 7.3 with 30.5" per turn.
Then again I may spring for the 100.
New: Fuego, Tatula, or SLX
Used: Curado
Honestly, with how well the Curado's hold up, a nice used Curado is going to give you the most bang for your buck in that price range. But if you're more comfortable with something new from a store, the Fuego, Tatula, and SLX all come highly recommended from guys who have used them.

That's one of my favorite reels. I put it on a medium rod and it throws a weightless fluke just fine.
Lews Tournament MB Ebay for 100 bucks or Diawa Tatula CT for about the same. Personally I can do without the T Wing on the Diawa, so MB. I own 3 of em'.

I have a President XT, great reel for the money. Amazon has them on sale often for the same price as the standard President baitcaster. I paid $55 for mine IIRC.
Pflueger Patriarch XT's when Pflueger's website had them on clearence a few months ago...........$99 with an additional 10% off, and free shipping!
But seriously......I'd say a Lews Tournament MB
Ambassadeur 5500-C.
Nothing any other reel can do that I can't do with these reels. Have had 1/2 doz. over the past 40 years. They work fine and you can pass them down to your kids without fear that they won't work just as well.

Great reel. I think for bass fishing I'd step it down to a 4600 just because it's a little easier to palm. I do love my 5500s for bigger more fighty fish though!
Tatula 100 found for 110 on SportsmenOutfitters.

Yup. Already had 3 older Patriarch XTs so I went with a Supreme XT and a Patriarch. Great deals.
Right now, you can get a Pflueger Supreme XT on Amazon for $120. I highly doubt you'll find a better reel even if you increase your budget notably. My oldest son has a Shimano Curado K, and I actually like the Supreme XT better! It's lighter, might reel a little smoother as well and casts further than any reel I own. I own a few Daiwa Tatula SVs as well and they are great, but they sacrifice casting distance for braking -- well worth it for 3/8oz and lighter lures or skipping but for heavier lures I'd take the Supreme XT.
Alternatively you can get a Tatula CT or Shimano SLX for around $90 or so on ebay, and you can't go wrong there either.
Tatula CT!

I vote Lew’s LFS too. Small, easy to tune, and it looks good. I’m not sure why I don’t notice more Lew’s users. Lew’s has been pushing their low-end reels in Walmart. But the Speed Spool LFS is still a quality item that you can’t get there.
Lews Tournament MB on eBay for around $110.

The Shimano citica is $100 at Academy
Lew's Tournament MB
Daiwa Tatula CT
Shimano SLX
Daiwa Fuego CT
the abu garcia alx is 130 on sportsman's outfitters
I have 3 Fuego CT and am wanting a 6.3 ratio now.
For $130 you can get a Daiwa Tatula CT (retail price). For $110 you can get a Daiwa Fuego CT (retail price). For $100 you can get a Shimano SLX (retail price). You can find sales or go to Amazon or eBay to get them all cheaper.
I have Tatulas and Fuegos and my dad has the SLX. My choice would be finding Fuegos for $50-$75. Outstanding reel that isnt much different than the Tatula but is relatively cheaper.
Shimano Citica $99.99 right now at Academy!
Pflueger Supreme
I'm sure the Lews LFS is a solid reel, but for $100 it doesn't make much sense not to upgrade to Tournament MB
Tatula 100 $109

I just checked and it's still $149 today.

I agree. LFS retail price is $99 you can find it on sale rarely for $70
Tournament MB retail price is $139 you can find it on sale for $110 or lower. Dollar for dollar one of the best reels I own. It’s a tank of a reel.
Never buy a reel for full price.
Lew's Speed Spool LFS. I have two. Best money I ever spent.

$99.99 at our Academy ????
I bought a lews LFS a few years ago and hated it. Felt cheap compared to my similar priced pflueger and Abu reels. Ended up selling it on eBay

Guess it's just an in-store deal, not online.

Yeah it was a 2 day sale here & are now listed back at $149.99
I should have bought one yesterday when I was there!

+1 or for $65 or so the Daiwa Fuego CT in 7:1 or 8:1 gear ratios are a great value .
Lews or Shimano at that price point ????
I love the Daiwa Tatulas. I currently own 4 of them and plan plan on purchasing more. I was using Lews and Quantum reels until I found a deal too good to pass up on the Daiwa Tatulas. I'll never go back. Smooth drag, easy to dial in, durable, cast a mile. I just add one drop of oil to the bearings once a week and never have problems with them.
Ambassadeurs.
shimano citica on sale right now at tackle warehouse for $125.
how is the citica compared to the curado k?
13 Inception, IMO. It is way, way smoother then other reels in the same price point I have handled. It is also very compact, light, and castable.
Fuego all day.
you could get 3 Abu Silvermax's for $125 right now on Amazon

I wish I liked daiwas but they feel bad in my hand. I'm too used to low pro abus
Of all of my reels, my Tatula 100 with flushed bearings, SmoothDrag Greased bearings on the Worm and an oiled Boca Ceramic Lightning bearing under the drag star is the most refined. It feels a bit chunky and clunky, but it’s definitely the smoothest and most refined.
Cost a little more than $125 - I definitely recommend it in this price range.

I know what you mean. The Daiwas are too big around the top by the levelwind. The Abus and Shimanos are tapered in at the top.
