Anyone Not Care About There Combos Appearance Or Colors? 2024

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

So I was looking Amy stuff and a buddy commented on my combos while over. I fish halo starlight ( yellow handles on the red blank) and daylight series ( plain black) and then what ever reel I prefer in them. I've never cared about appearance or color schemes as long as the performance and feel is there. It just doesn't matter to me. But it got me thinking do some guys actually try to match this stuff and care what there equipment looks like?

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

Bass fising, don't really care.  When I worked charterboats or fished on them I had custom wrapped rods with the same color scheme's on them to make them eaiser to identify especially if there are 200 rods on the boat.  That little bit of color when you set it down makes it easer to spot as well as keeping an eye out if someone accidently trys to walk off with it at the end of the day.

fishing user avatarOzark_Basser reply :

I definitely care. It's half the fun having cool stuff. Wait till you start thinking about making your own stuff, then you'll really spend some time trying to match colors and getting creative.

fishing user avatarSNK reply :

I care to a certain degree. I usually research and shop for Performance and Appearance first, if I cannot find that then it is Performance over Appearance, but never, ever, Appearance over Performance.

fishing user avatarS Hovanec reply :

Life is too short to fish with ugly equipment. I plan rods around reels I have and buy reels to match rods I plan to build.

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

I match my rods and reels by weight. I have 5 Alphas and an SS SV. These sre spooled with either 8 or 10 , and mounted on my lightest power rods. My 4 Zillions get 14 , and are on my heaviest power rods. In the middle of the pack are 5 Fuegos, 2 TD-Z, and a Viento. These are spooled with 12, and are on the rest of the rods.

What they look like has no bearing on the pairing.

fishing user avatarFisher-O-men reply :

I don't care about my clothes, why would I care about my gear? ;)  Now my guns, they gotta look nice!

fishing user avatarGrantman83 reply :

I may have such a problem.  Considering I have had stuff custom painted to match lol.  But I still like using stuff that doesnt match and just works.  Can I say I have some of both side of the argument?

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Lol of course ya can! It's neat to see folks opinions on the subject!

fishing user avatarDogBone_384 reply :

Doesn't really bother me if my rods & reels don't match. Whatever feels & works best together stays together.

fishing user avatarMaster Bait'r reply :

Different strokes :)

See the neat thing is how many different ways there are to skin the proverbial cat, and each individual's taste is different. There are as many answers and perspectives as there are colors in the Ito catalog.

I wanted to spread it around, personally. I do also want to keep my small quiver as sexy as it can be. I can only have a few rods so you bet they are eye candy haha

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

Nope, don't care.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

I do hear ya there I also only have a a few combos. But I like it that way. And I just don't care about the looks thing strictly performance lol

fishing user avatarbigfishbk86 reply :

Don't care at all, and I mean at all. This is confirmed by The 6 cabelas green zillions I have :)

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Feel > looks. If it all looks good, so much the better.

fishing user avatarMaxximus Redneckus reply :

Looks dont matter but i like line with color i dont care for clear line.i have 30 spools of line mostly green yo zuri ,solar collector And green big game and some red triple fish.

fishing user avatar22hertz reply :

I dont care other than I prefer a black rod.

I am considering a Duckett Ghost for my latest reel purchase but really dont like the white color...

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

I won't buy a rod due to color. A great example is the red or yellow Halo rods the OP mentioned. I don't like those two colors so I won't spend 'my' money on them. I would never buy a vehicle that color either.

fishing user avatarCRANKENSTIEN reply :

Performance. Value then looks last. Quality equipment always looks good to me no matter the color or match.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Anything but pink rod.

fishing user avatarJohn G reply :

Yes, I do care about how a rod/reel look together.

fishing user avatarmrc.in.wi reply :

If it works and it doesn't cost me a weeks pay, I don't care what color it is.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

fishing user avatarDCfishing reply :

I don't really care, but what you described sounded pretty ugly. :/ The yellow on a red blank.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Haha yeah they are. But man there nice rods for the money

fishing user avatarstkbassn reply :

I bought matching rod gloves for them but that's as far as I go...looks nice I guess but Iike them much better when the rod gloves are off and my line is getting wet....;)

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

I agree

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

Back in olden times (several years ago) I wouldn't buy the carrot stix because they were orange - just didn't like it.   Wouldn't buy a yellow rod.   Not big on white rods.   I kind of like the Fenwick AETOS rods, with the blue sheen they have to them.   So, basically, some colors yes, some no way.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Haha I like the orange but I've never fished a carrot stick

fishing user avatarjignfule reply :

Never even crossed my mind until I read some posts on this forum. To be honest, I thought it was a joke at first. IMO it's SILLY to be concerned with such things.

fishing user avatar5fishlimit reply :

Look good, feel good.  Feel good, fish good.

fishing user avatarDTack reply :

Nothing wrong with matching it, but I don't pay too much attention.  Just want it to perform!

fishing user avatarib_of_the_damned reply :

I like to match rod and reels. Im the kind of guy who appreciates visual beauty and aesthetics. That being said, all my rods are black with either red, grey, or green highlights and I like my reels to match.

That being said, I think my next purchase will be a 7' HF iRod Genesis 2 and an Okuma Helios 2013 LP. I love the combo of Black and Green... you guys should see my Compound Bow...

Ditto

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

None of my rods and reels match in color.  I worry more about how it's going to feel in my hands after casting for hours on end.

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

I care. But then I'm slightly OCD.

fishing user avatarRAMBLER reply :

Function over "purty".

fishing user avatarkcdinkerz reply :

performance>pretty lol

fishing user avatarbass1980 reply :

Performance + Purdy > performance + ugly

That's how I look at it. Most people that looks for color complimenting combos just don't do it for only colors. They already know their options are all performers.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

Totally a personal preference deal.

I think I'm sort of old school in that I look at my fishing gear as "tools"

So bright colors are generally a turn off for me.

Just like a bright Orange Hammer or a Green Crescent Wrench.

They'd work fine, but I just would not enjoy using them.

A-Jay

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

One of my tape measures is fluorescent orange. You think I can find it?

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

Don't care about them matching by color, brand or anything else.  Just as long as the rod and reel balance well.

They only time I care about color though, is when I have a black rod and a black reel setting out in the sun.  I then pick it up and scorch my hand.

fishing user avatarjtesch reply :

One time I put a Fuego on a Skeet Reese rod and the Color combination made me vomit on the Fuego, which severely hurt the freespool time of the reel. Point being, color can effect performance

Funny you mention that. I just lost a bright orange tape measure!

On topic, rods and reels matching is not always under my control. However, rod socks must match. No exceptions.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

If it matches it's a bonus, but not something I'm concerned about. I've got a bunch of dark green Curados on cobalt blue LTBs, not pretty but they fish nice :)

fishing user avatarcorn-on-the-rob reply :

If it looks good, I notice. If it doesn't, I don't care.

I'll leave matching pretty colors to my jigs and trailers.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Glad to hear not everyone subscribes to this sillynes!!!!

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

A place for everything and everything in its place.

I care about color, contrast and coordination. That would include not

just the rod and reel, but covers, carrying case and especially the color

of my line. I like my boots polished, my  pants pressed and heavy starch

in my shirts, too!

:eyebrows:

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

I like it when they match, but not to the point where I'm going to hate it if it doesn't.

fishing user avatarlmbfisherman reply :

Performance is more important than appearance.  Having said that though, with all the choices available to us anglers you should be able to in most cases get both.  I try my best to make them match.

fishing user avatarFlipSide reply :

I like mine to match, since I'm paying quite a bit of money for it I prefer it to match

fishing user avatarRich in Co reply :

I'm not much of a matcher either just as long as i like im good to go, there are to many nice rods & reels out it would take me for ever to match things up,m but if I get lucky and it all matches even better

fishing user avatarLunker Huntin reply :

I generally enjoy a subtle touch on my gear, over the last few years I've notices a lot of manufactures putting out blanks that are flat, no high shine to them at all ex(*** and dobyns blanks) many more than that but those are the ones I own. I like the flat look because they pair up with my lews reels very well. Generally if its black Ill like it. A while back I saw a lot of guys promoting the Powell endurance rods so I went on to TW to check them out, god those rods are hideous, purple with pink highlights what the heck where they thinking on those. Ill take a flat black setup all day. So like many have said performance is key but if it pairs up and looks nice that's just a bonus (but you wont catch me with a purple pink rod I don't care how nice it fishes)

fishing user avatarBlues19 reply :

I like my stuff to look good, that being said, how it preforms is the most important part.  If it looks good, awesome! If I cant decide between 2 then sure looks may help make the decision. I like things to be odd and stick out too. That is just me though.  I just got some neon wrap for my rod handles. I know I will  get ragged on by my friends cause they wont like it, but who cares what other people think? It sure makes it easier finding it in a rod locker though!

Aesthetically my endurance is my favorite rod lol

fishing user avatarPhelptwan reply :

Don't really care much.  Can't decide which is my ugliest combo, the Helios w/ CI4+ or Veritas with Curado.

Looking good is a bit different than being freaky about fishing tools.  You didn't add that selecting bait/lure color to match would be part of your program too?  Why not?  If you've gone to all that trouble, including your line....why neglect what dangles from the end of it all?

I have absolutely no perception of style or coordinating where fishing gear is involved.  I try to throw together what I need and hope I get it right and that's as far it goes for me.

Is that what causes this?  I have a hard time looking at any reel that isn't black or sliver, but it only applies to baitcast reels.  You can put a black reel on any rod and it will look good.

fishing user avatarPatrick Morrow reply :

Actually what I have found out over the years is that very many anglers actually care about how their reel, rod and everything fits together appearance wise. They don´t seem to be obsessed about it, but take it into account when two or more rods/reels are in the same price group and don´t seem to have much difference performance wise.
