Reels under $70? 2024

fishing user avatarCaptain Obvious reply :

I'm looking for two bait-casting reels in the $50-$70 price range for the two new rods I got for my birthday. I ordered some Daiwa pro-casters from BPS, they were not what I wanted so I sent them back.  I'm looking for reels that have at least a 6;2;1 but nothing over 6;3;1I want a reel  that will be able to handle crankbaits ,C-rigs, T-rigs, and Cast and reel very smoothly. I've been  looking at reels at Cabelas and BPS, But most of the reels in my price range seem to be a hit-and-miss thing, sometimes you get something good, other times you get junk. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

good luck and tight lines

fishing user avatarfirefightn15 reply :

BPS Extreme.  Check these out.  Anyone that has them seem very pleased with them.  And there are alot here that have them.  Also notice they are on sale right now.

i like the dawia megaforce with the twichin bar and i also like using the abu silver max reels.

fishing user avatarThe Next KVD reply :

Shimano Crestfire and Coriolis are great reels in that price range.  Up until I started upgrading to curados and chronarchs, these reels were my main weapons.  The have good line capacity, 6.2:1 gear ratio, and fit nicely in my hand.  Cast far, and very durable.

Mostly yes but not BPS David Fritts Signature Series reel for 60 bucks.

fishing user avatarhercdoc reply :

Another vote for the Fritts reel. I got one at Christmas and after a few outings I enjoy throwing cranks with it. My $2 worth.

As someone who tried to go that route, trust me when I say that buying cheap reels is a great way to get really ticked off.

I heartily disagree.  I fish with so-called 'cheap' reals and they work perfectly fine.  Sure they may wear you're a pro and fish on an daily basis but for the weekend angler they are perfect.  Now, if you are blessed and have the money the more expensive reels are terrific, but by no means will buying a 'cheap' reel make your fishing experience horrible!

I highly recommend the Abu Garcia Silver Max - I have one of these and have been extremely pleased.  I also own two BPS Extremes and they are nice, however I think the Silver Max has them beat.  I find the drag system on the Silver Max is superior to the BPS extreme, and IMHO the Silver Max casts easier and further.

fishing user avatarCaptain Obvious reply :

Thanks for the info guys, but I'm not an ebay guy,  I'm a shore fisherman so I like to have two poles rigged..... saves time and line. I guess the real question is do I go with one high end reel, or still try my luck at two for the same price. Two BPS extremes would cost me (tax not included) $129.99. One Shimano Citica E will cost me $119.99. What should I do? Take a chance and get the extremes, or go with the dependable Citica.

fishing user avatarwarmer reply :

I guess you think it is perfectly acceptable to buy a new reel every year?

You get what you pay for, and with casting reels, the line of demarcation is around $100.

fishing user avatarjimmieO reply :

I have bought $70 reels that were immediate pieces of crap and a $29 daiwa strikeforce that can compete (at least initially) with my best stuff.  It was much more important for me initially to get those 2 rigs going and then build up to better stuff later. If you've only got 1 going, you will save yourself a lot of aggravation by being able to switch between your jig and your spinnerbait or whatever else quickly. Go with the 2, Especially if those BPS extremes are as decent as everyone claims.

fishing user avatarMaxximus Redneckus reply :

this "cheap'" thread means low pros right???? cause i swear by my abu 4600,s for 60  bucks

fishing user avatar21farms reply :

the single most important thing to look for in a reel in this price range is a one-piece aluminum frame. a solid, rigid frame is the foundation for the entire reel and keeps all the internal aligned for smooth, bind-free operation. it is something you can't easily see (as opposed to the bling they put on reels now) but companies that spend the money there tell me that they're serious about making a durable, dependable and smooth reel.

now, at the $70 price point, most reels have graphite or composite frames, but there are some with one-piece aluminum frames. graphite/composite framed reels can feel good initially but, under load or after an hour or so of fishing, they can flex and still start making noises or grinding and, over the long haul, won't hold up.

the most inexpensive daiwa with a one-piece aluminum frame is the exceler. the BPS extremes and prolite finesse reels have them too. i have not used the extremes but i have two of the prolite finesse reels and they're surprising good.

fishing user avatarbjohnson reply :

I guess I am the odd ball of the bunch, but I had an extreme and HATED it's braking system. But I would agree with most it is hit or miss. I have 2 BPS cheap 39.99 tour. special reels and LOVE them. But everyone you talk to LOVES their extreme, but it just wasn't the reel for me.

RIDICULOUS answer!

How many have you owned, lets hear your experience with these Junk reels?

The BPS EXTREMES: I would jump on one now, as the updated the reel for 2009 and the old ones will be put on a huge discount.

Cabela Prodigiues and Tourny xz's: I have ownded and used both, no isssues both for around 65 on sale

USED: Look on our flea market I curently own 4 Pflueger Trion Baitcaster I got on our flea market used for 45 bucks. I spent a6 on each getting them cleamed and lubed ( Pflueger does em) and they run like new, which would have cost 99 per

Also look for ABU's , Micro has a 5600c Mag 4 up right now for onoly 50 bucks ( new they go for 99) and I bet the reel is in new condition.

The notion you can't find a good reel at this price is BS I have been doing it for years.

Gotta disagree here. I have a BPS Extreme the old one, with the 6 pin brake for over 2 years of very active use. It was given to me by my fried Gene who had it for 5 years of also heavy use.

Many of my friends and I have had Pflueger Trions , they last for years,   And I bet you there are guys fishing ABU's and Pfluegers over 25 years old all over this board, that were bought in this price range: I have fished with some of them myself.

This is from personal first hand experieince , not She-mano driven propaganda. ::(

Seriously,  I've fished with several of the Extreme reels.  So have quite a few others around here.  Unless you have something against green reels, (I don't care for them)   :(  they're a great reel and will give you a lot of service.  The cast really well, are very smooth and the ITB braking system is fairly easy to setup and learn.

One thing for sure,  don't go any lower than the extreme series in BPS reels.  Anything below that winds up being a graphite framed reel that probably won't hold up over the long run.

Like I said, it depends on how much you fish.  Due to work and commitments at home I only fish 2-3 times a month.  So no, I don't have to buy a new reel every year.  If I fished 3 times a week then yes, I may have to buy a new reel each year.

Out of all review I've found David Fritts Signature Series is one of the best reel for that price. It has 6.3:1 gear ratio you looked for. Good luck with your choice.

See what I mean. Now I don't blame you a bit Muddy. I was trying to help the guy out instead of convincing him to get what brand I prefer. Offer what we think is good for him instead of think of their own self.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Your best bet is to scour the flea market here, and other online classifieds.  Ebay has been good to me, but you want to be careful.  I always establish a dialog with the seller before bidding.  Anyone that responds is probably on the up and up.  You can tell who is just trying to move some unused stuff from the junk rats and ebay barons if you take some time to look at what they've bought and sold, and their feedback.  I've picked up some pretty nice reels on the very cheap this way, and I've sold a few nice reels this way as well.  Just last week I saw a couple of EC and NIB TD-X reels go for your price range.  These were $200 when new.

fishing user avatarCaptain Obvious reply :

Again thanks for all the info. I'm sorry but for those of you that suggest eBay or the flea market, I've been burned on Internet deals to much, after my last bad deal I promised myself to buy everything new. Looks like I'm going to be buying two extremes, I figure that if I take care of them and keep them clean they should last awhile. Thanks guys

fishing user avatarBassBandit35 reply :

Good choice! Enjoy it.

I have a Daiwa Procaster Rojo that would be just what your looking for. I bought it new last January and used it about 5 times. I paid $89 for it and will let you have it for $55 shipped. Still have the box and books and everything that came with it. Only thing it is a left handed model.

BassMaster had an article in a issue a couple of months ago with the same price point I think. I know one of the top reels at this price point in both the spinning and B/C category was the Daiwa Exceler which is right at $70. They also mentioned the Daiwa Regal XiA (which I have and is a very good reel). Another reel they menitoned in the spinning catergory was the Pflueger President.

citica all the way, I bought 2 for my first baitcasters and they are awesome. I am so glad I spend a little more and went the GOOD route, I still want a chrono 50mg though

fishing user avatarBNKrust reply :

The Daiwa Exceler is a really nice reel for $70 or so. They were $69.99 last year at Cabelas, but I see they have kicked up the price $10. Comes in a 6.3 or 7.1 also.

BPS Extreme are fantastic reels for the price. I also have a BPS Rick Clunn which is sometimes on sale for about $70.00. Better than the $200.00 Shimano I own. I have my eye on a Quantum Accurist PT on E-bay so no one else bid on it! :(

fishing user avatarThe_Natural reply :

That Prolite finesse is a step up from the Extreme, and it's on sale for $69.99.  That seems like the right choice to me if you want a new reel.

fishing user avatarretiredbosn reply :

I have the Fritts reel from BPS and like it a lot. Can't say how they compare to the $200 reels as I've never used one. I know how they compare to some of the 100-150 range reels, and the Fritts reel is as good as any I've tried. Some people don't like the dual pawl anti-reverse, but for a cb reel the anti-reverse is fine. The one with the 6.2 speed has true instant anti-reverse, which will serve you better in certain applications, ie worming, jigging, soft plastics. The design of the reel results in really long casts, I'm nowhere near an expert but my own casting immediately improved a lot. Don't let your budget deter you, there are true deals out there. BTW most BPS reels have high quality stainless steel ball bearings, solid aluminum frames, etc. Anyway most companies farm out the manufacturing of the reels, and the number of actual factories producing reels are few. Do your research and find the company that makes Diawa, quantum, shimano, whatever, and then buy one of their private labels that have the same construction as the high dollar reel you want. IMO at the end of the day what makes a shimano or a diawa is the sticker on the reel not what is inside it or who made it, many times the actual manufacturer is a mystery. There are other reels made with the same components, in the same factory that are less expensive to buy.

If what bassbandit35 says is true then I'm going with Acadia. If you don't know who that is check out there website www. Acadia sports.com. There a company that buys rods and reels from the same factories that make daiwas and shimano, the difference, they sell them for a much lower price. I had almost made up my mind to buy the BPS extremes, But I would like it if some of you guys check out the website and told me what you think about their reels, thanks for all the info I'm learning a lot :(

fishing user avatarfirefightn15 reply :

I don't know if we can help anymore. There's four pages of opinions all ready. This idea of slapping a name on reel is more than just that. It's the service you get after you buy, and just because brand X is built identical to the more expensive name brand, that don't make them the same. The cheaper brand X most likely has inferior components. Gears, drag systems, bearings, etc. That's it for me. Goodluck.

BTW, I know you are looking to get the best bang for your buck, and I honestly believe you were headed in the right direction the first time around.  Someone's been a bit bucky the last few days and there has been a bit of a carry over from another thread which has muddled this discussion a little.  I really do hope whatever you get works for ya! :(
