I've got 3 baitcaster rods right now and 2 spinning rods. One of my spinning rods is really for ICW fishing...so a little heavy. Trying to decide if I should just replace the spinning rod and get a nicer combo, or add another casting rod, or both lol. I've got a mixture of brands: Shimano SLX DC, SCurado K, and Shimano SLX casting, and Shimano stradic Ci4 for spinning. Rods are Dobyns glass, lews TP1 and st croix avid. St croix mojo for spinning rod.
How do you roll?
90% of my rods are casting
So if I were you I'd definitely get a casting rig. Since it sounds like you have the basics covered and some money to spend, you could splurge and get a high end combo instead of two in your normal price range.
I definitely use casting setups way more than spinning.
Shimano Expride/Shimano Curado 200 K- Jigs
ALX Zolo Deputy/Shimano Curado 200 K- Spinnerbaits, swim jigs, etc.
Kistler Helium 3/Shimano Curado 200 IHG- Texas Rigs

Dobyns Sierra/Pflueger Patriarch XT- Misc.
Lews Custom Cranking/Lews BB1 Speed- Deep cranking
Cashion Elite Flipping/Daiwa Tatula CT- Heavy cover pitching/flipping
Then few others I don't use as much, as well as a few spinning.
I bring 6 rods in my kayak
All my reels are Lew's, either Tournament Pro G's or this years Tournament Pro's.
1. MH/Fast MegaBass Levante 2019 Brailist that is for plastics, t-rigged, weightless, wacky
2. MH/Fast Avid X
3. MegaBass Orochi XX Brailist for jigs
4. Med/Mod MegaBass Flatside Special for squarebills, mid depth cranks, and lipless
5. H/Fast Avid X for frogging, punching, bigger baits like swimbaits. I will also use it for buzzbaits.
6A. Med/Mod Avid X for the same as my Flatside above....I bring it when I plan on using a lot of cranks
6B. H/Fast Diawa Tatula Elite for when I plan on hitting a lake with tons of weeds
6C MH/Fast Avid X for when I'm going to a new lake and not sure what I'm going to use.

We are similar. Rods and reels from all over with Daiwa reels being in the majority. Daiwa, Fenwick & Falcon lead in rods.
About 82% of mine are baitcasting, but they get used about 99.3% of the time.
Wow those are some nice setups!! Looks like I’ll need to be adding both ha. So how many spinning rods do you take? I think I would like one rigged with a dropshot and one with either shakyhead or wacky rig. My other rod to add will probably be a flipping/frog rod. I assume I’ll try to find a 7’3 H. Thanks again and love seeing the variety

Wow that's quite the variety. Mind sharing what you use each rod for? Thanks
Most of the time i carry 10 bait casters and 7 spinning setups. All of my reels are Shimanos. My bait caster setups vary from Ned to Arigs. The majority of the rods are Gloomis. The 3 of the spinning setups are for plastics and 4 of them are Ned rigs. In the winter I swap out the Ned for vertical setups. Those have Fenwick HMG rods.
I found a rod mfg company that lets me buy at great prices so I have quit buying branded rods.

The few times I've fished the dropshot I used my Flatside.

I couldn't tell you. My cheapest rod cost $17 plus tax. Most expensive $175. Cheapest reel $30, most expensive i think was $240. However, my Airy Red has the most invested in it. It was unusable upon delivery. Repair, cleaning and upgrades cost more than the reel's purchase price. Let's just say that over the past 10 plus years I have managed to accumulate a few thousand in rods and reels.

Yeah, I imagine most people don't really want to know how much they've spent. I know I don't. I keep all my fishing stuff receipts, well most of it, in one place, but I've never once considered totaling the receipts.
I have a writer on my boat insurance policy for $8500 to cover my stuff.

Only a few rods were purchased with a specific technique in mind. The OG 7'4" Tatula was purchased as a frog rod and stays in Florida. So does the Hurricane and is used for treble hook lures. The Toadface is for frogs and toads locally, but is much more versatile that that. The Aetos, X10 and 704 CB Glass naturally are used for treble hook lures. As will be a Lew's Crankbait Ledge rod still in plastic.
The Benkei was purchased for my dedicated Ned Rig rod. The HMG is one on the rods I learned to cast 3/16 oz. Shad Raps on. Still use it for that, but it will also do more. The 105H makes a good companion for it and were purchased together.
I've never used a Carolina Rig, Umbrella Rig or punched. I don't use large swimbaits. I do user smaller ones. I never figured I'd be buying so much gear so I always bought with versatility in mind. Technique rods (including crankbait rods) are some of the last rods I have purchased.
I decided to try a baitcast reel when I got back into fishing in 2009. Love them. Have too many. Would have more, but am trying to be more responsible.
Lew’s Mach 1 baitcaster combo
Lew’s Mach 2 baitcaster combo
Lew’s Mach Crush baitcaster combo
Lew’s LFS baitcaster, Field and Stream Tec Spec Elite MH rod
Lew’s Tournament MB baitcaster, Denali Zenyx crankbait rod
Lew’s Mach 2 spinning combo
Lew’s Mach Crush spinning combo
Lew’s Xfinity spinning combo
Lew’s Custom Pro Speed Spin, Favorite Balance ML rod
I usually roll with a spinning combo for finesse fishing and a baitcaster combo for power fishing from the bank. Same for kayak. If I am on a boat I will take 3 baitcasters and a spinning combo with me.
If I am creek or canal fishing it is usually a spinning combo I carry.
I find I want more rod/reel combos just so I don’t have to swap out baits so often when I’m out on the water. I usually have a limited time going out so it’s nice I can have my docs and baits ready the night before. I’ve been night fishing more lately and spinning rods are nice bc can’t see where lure is and so less chance of backlash.
When you are skipping a lure under cover or dock, do you use spinning or bait caster? I am guessing most use baitcadtrr but I have tried it lately and keep getting backlash if I do t hit it correctly. Spinning real seams easier. I know it’s my fault though and just need to work on my technique. Two questions on gear. If going with two spinning rods, what flex do you go for on each? Second, if you were going to try to have one rod to do frog, pitching and flipping...what would the specifics you would want (eg length, power,..). Thanks and let’s keep hearing your rods. Love seeing all the cool brands i haven’t heard of

I buy endgame gear. I'd rather have one awesome rig that I love to use and have confidence in than 4 average technique specific rigs. I think that the next rig you buy you should get the best you can afford to afford. I'm not saying go get it tomorrow. I am saying that if you can afford to own a $1000 rig, buy it! If it takes a year to save up, so be it. You have plenty of gear to get you by until then. You will be much happier in the end and not always coming back here asking which rig you should sell to sidestep Into another "doable" rig.

Thanks! Yeh, I'm not looking to sell any rigs to buy another one. Money isn't really an issue. I'm just looking to pick up another (or two) combos...just trying to think it through. I am actually really happy with my current combos (excluding the one spinning setup). I'm no professional so I doubt I could tell a huge difference between a nice $400-500 combo vs a $1000 setup, so I'll probably just stick with a good middle of the range rig $150-250 rod and same reel). To me, I would rather just grab a different rod real quick if I get a short strike, and want to follow it up with something different instead of stopping and tying on a different bait. Obviously, I'm not going to be happy throwing an ugly stick just in order to have another rod...but if I can do it with a st croix, dobyns, or megabass. And I figure, if I am going to buy another, might as well get a rod that fills a gap in my setup. At this point in my life, I would feel kindof dumb having $5k-7k in rods, when I'm only fishing a couple times a month. I'm still somewhat new to fishing, but am really loving it. Now if I could just get my wife more on board lol
Let us know how that turns out for ya... lol
which part? I assume you are referring to the "getting my wife on board" lol yeh I don't like my chances. Going to try to get my boys more involved as they get older. Thanks again for the advice. Any other thoughts?

Yea I was talking about the wife. I order all my stuff via ups so I can route it to the ups store. I dont have to hear it anymore. I think she's starting to notice the rod rack growing though.
I am happy with my $500 rigs but I think we owe it to ourselves to at least see what the next level is like. If it's not a significant upgrade, then we will be happy with what we have and save money in the long run. I personally think its overkill for anything less than a MH powered rod. Everything is sensitive at that point and the upper tiered rods are more prone to snapping because they are so light.
For the boys, get the zebco 33 underspin. It will make the transition to spinning reels much easier. I started my 6yo daughter on a regular zebco spincast and this year she transitioned to the underspin. Reeling with the other hand really took some getting used to. I wish I would have started her out on the underspin. It really helps learning the timing of the release. It's not as forgiving as the spincasts which is what we want for them imo. It associates the index finger with line release rather than thumbing a button and its location isnt too far off from where the line will be held on a spinning rig. After a couple months with spinning gear next year I hope to have her start using the Curado DC.
That’s a great idea! Yeh i slipped the kids rods and went straight to spinning reels. They are doing pretty good with them. I’m just not trying to push them at this point.
Any other thoughts on rod/reel setups? I’m really surprised how few use spinning reels. Very interesting.

You will find the vast majority here prefer baitcast reels. Many use spinning for the light stuff. Not all. However, there are a few that prefer spinning for just about everything. Nothing wrong with either. Use whichever you prefer.

Yeh I am the same. I would love to hear more about what people are using for spinning setups and why. Also looking for advice on a good flipping/pitching rod. But love hearing everyone's setups...
Okuma TCS/Curado K - Spinnerbaits
Expride/Curado DC - chatterbaits, buzzbaits, lipless cranks
Expride/Chronarch MGL - Texas rigs
13 Inception / *** - Frogs, Jigs
other setups don't really get used much, if I'm being honest.

So am I.
I have a text file for both rods and reels. I'm not very computer literate. Would love a similar spreadsheet. Might be too lazy to figure out how to make one and fill it out, tho.
So how many are using 2 or more spinning rods with your setup? And if you do, how do you use them?
On 9/4/2019 at 10:55 AM, clemsondds said:So how many are using 2 or more spinning rods with your setup? And if you do, how do you use them?
I have three spinning rigs.
Pres-25 - UL - Ned rig when I'm not after panfish or trout
Avocet - ML - Drop-shot, weightless wacky, Ned
Trion - M - smaller cranks & jerks, light T-Rigs (3/8 oz and less), light swim-jigs
The BC rigs are for heavier/larger lures.
I primarily use spinning rods but do have a few casting rods for bass and of course for musky.

I have more than 2 spinning outfits, but normally only carry one with me. It will be for lighter lures than I want to cast with a baitcast reel. Hardly ever gets used. My newest is a dedicated Ned Rig. This I hope to use more often. Should I carry a second spinning combo it will be for lighter worms and jigs, etc. i.e. small thin wire single hooks.
This year when I went to Florida on vacation the only casting reel loaded with braid I took with me was for my frog rod. Forgot to take another one with braid. I had shipped a few rods down ahead of time. One was an older Fenwick HMG 7' MF worm & jig spinning rod. As it turns out the spinning reel I took with me had braid spooled on it. This became my main rod this year while there. Mostly it was for casting a 10" weightless ribbontail worm back into the lily pads and other junk. Worked fine.
BTW, I have a more complete list of my rods and reel on another forum. (No longer a complete list.) Posting all of them might sound like bragging. It's not. I'm just happy with what I have accumulated over the years. Many on here have much more expensive rods & reels than I do. I'm happy for them and enjoy seeing what others use.
EDIT: webertime, which model is your Prodigy? I have the older gray model. Definitely a solid reel.

LOL I just couldn’t pass up 40% off I think I have a problem....
