they often have clearance on fishing stuff and the sign will say includes price that ends in .97 but it basically never covers reels or rods, i've tried on a few occasions.....

maybe someone messed up and loaded the rods and reels into the promotion or something and you made out like a bandit!

Just stopped by the local DSG to see what they have. In their display rack they had a Pflueger Patriarch marked down from $199 to $150. And I asked the associate to scan the SKU, the price came back 50% off at $75. So it seems the sale items at my store are discounted an additional 50%. I hope that this is not just an isolated incident. BTW, I bought that Patriarch....too good of a deal not to pass up.

I read this post on my way home from work and ran over to the local dicks a couple minutes before closing to see if I could score a deal myself. Found a quantum energy pt bait caster, originally stickered at 190, on sale for a 100. Asked the guy in the fishing dept to run the sku for me and he said the price is already clearly marked. Asked him to check it again. The guy just looked at me when he checked the gun and asked..'how the h3ll did you know that?' Walked out with the reel for less than $40.... I may have ran to my car.

Like was said, prices ending in .97 are clearance. Clearance sometimes gets huge discounts. When the new Curado G hit the shelves, I was able to buy a couple dozen Es for $75 and Citicas for $50. Gotta keep your eyes open, and ask for price checks.

I went up to the girl and was like, "Weird question, even though theres a price on here can you just scan it for me and let me know what it says?" She looks at me funny, laughs and was like "Ok!", then while she has a surprised look on her face then says the price and im like, " Sweeeeet!!! Thank you!"

Their selection was only 6'8" MH/F and 7'2" MH/XF Worm & Jig, bunch of each, another dicks location by me had the 7' MH Crank Rod, I have a 3rd Dicks near me but its a smaller one and I did not check if they had any. They probably dont but you never know. I guess im lucky to have 3 within good distance from me.

Low and behold it rang in at $42.48.

Think I might pair it up with one of those Lew's SS1's from TW...

Well.... I ended up going back to find a couple more deals, and found a whole lot of those 'can't walk away' situations.

Total damage:

(1) Quantum Energy PT Baitcaster - $159.95 sticker, bought for $42.76

(1) Shimano Curado G - $159.99 sticker, bought for $42.78

(1) Shimano Crucial Rod - $159.99 sticker, bought for $42.48

(2) Pflueger Supreme Spinning Reels - $99.99 sticker each, bought for $37.48 each

- Giving one to my old man for Xmas

That's $679.91 worth of stuff...for $202.98!

I know the sticker prices don't mean much at this point, but I'm extremely pleased. Don't need to 'stock up' on gear for a little while.

Only issue is that the line feed on the quantum doesn't work, so I'll need to send that in for service, which i'm more than okay with. Hopefully it's not too much of a hassle.

Basically there is nothing printed anywhere stating these mark downs? You have to go to the register and check to see if the items are marked down? Is this only for rods and reels or is this applying to baits as well?

I didn't see anything specifying what was marked down, but again I was only looking at rods. I just had the guy working price check a couple that were already marked down and that's when the additional mark down was found.

Yeah I know right. Early this spring I went to dicks and they had the lews lazer speed spool combo discounted to $75 dollars. So I grabbed one and some 50 lb power pro and went to check out. When I checked out the total was a little over $60, apparently it was one of those hidden deals. I'm gonna make sure I load up tomorrow! Haha

I went to Dicks in Daytona Beach today to look for the 50% off deals. What a joke. The sale was for any reel marked with a price ending in 93 or 97. They had two crap spinning reels at that price. Everything else was their usually overpriced amounts. Why bother saying you are going to give a discount on things when all you are offering is crap. Every time I go to Dicks I say I won't return. This time was the last!

I found a crucial and a curado there yesterday. But couldnt get any stinking help to unlock the case i was ready to snap. Also the dicks here has a box of clearance lures. They had crankbaits hanging off to the side of it. And i stuck myself on accident with the exposed treble hooks while i was waiting for help for an hour and a half

Is this the Dicks in Woodbridge? The ones in Springfield were normal price at $160.

Yes, Woodbridge. Not all the Rage rods - maybe 1/3rd of them. Dunno why. Too bad, too. I wanted a Rage spinning rod, but they were full price. The Smoke was the last 'decent' reel with close-out sticker price (.93 or .97). I'd have loved a RH one of those, too.

Thanks Choporoz, I will have to take a little field trip down there tonight. Were they specially marked or do you have to take them to the counter?

I took four or five back to 'Hunting' to price check and all came up as marked. So, I guess the marking is accurate there. Most everything with a .93 or .97 had a new red tag slapped on them - generally about 20% below regular retail -- and then they ring up 50% of that. There were a few that did end in .93/.97 that didn't have a red tag, however. The Smoke was like that -- tag said $119.97, no red tag, but still rang at 50% of marked price.

Rage rod had reg price of 159.99, red tag that said 129.97, and rang up at $64.99 with $3.19 reward (61.79 total). I'd say there were about 3 or 4 more Rage casting rods with red tags.

Well now I called the other store across town and they have 1 Supreme MGX 30 size. Had the guy scan it when I was on the phone and it came up at $35, so I had him hold it for me until I can get there after work. I'm sure I'll have to browse to see what rods they may have on clearance.

I'm going to be in Erie, PA on Thursday morning and I'd love to know if the sale's going on there too because I'd go out of my way and drop a few bucks.

LOL! No, 2 of the 7'2" rods are going to friends. One buddy lost one over the side during a tournament on Lake Erie when the water got very rough. The other buddy is going through some tough times in his personal life so I thought it would pick his spirits up some. The other three are for me. I fish a lot of docks so those 6'8" rods will see plenty of action for the foreseeable future. The other will let me know what reel to put on it in due time.
