Pretty.
So it's the new Elite with a SV spool... sounds expensive.

It’s a tatula 100 /elite/coastal with an Svspool. Its 240$.

Same price as the Elite but with an SV spool? You'd think they'd try to squeeze more money out of us.

I don't get it either. I did the yen to dollar on the price I saw on it and it came out to be 237$. I'm assuming it's going to be 249.99 US which would be inline with Daiwa's price hike of 2% across the board this year. I'm assuming this will render the elite P/f useless pretty quick.

Also lines up with the Coastal SV, which is essentially the same reel with a longer handle, deeper sv spool, and blue paint job.
Love the former Tat SV TW but honestly hope they put the new one on a diet and made it a little more palmable. Can be a bit bulky for some applications...
They didn't even put a soft rubber insert in the thumb bar. " Don't get cheap on me now Dobbins."

Its definitely a lot smaller and lighter than the previous reel.

The blue Coastal SV looks slick, I wish Daiwa made a blue Coastal Fuego for those of us who are more frugal.
Those boats doing the "heart maneuver" at the beginning really made me decide I have to buy this reel. If nothing else, all the Tatula logo graphics look pretty well done. I'm not an fan of the purple accents, I like the red ones on the old one.

purple is a designation of reel gear ratio. They do it on all their reels. Gold is 6x, red is 7x and purple ix 8x, green is 9x. All of those colors are included in the new tatula except for the 9 speed green.
My opinion but I think they should’ve kept it closer to $200.

Thanks, I didn't know that. Both my reels had red accents and they are the 7.x:1 models.

dumb question of the day. I am going to get a sv tw how do you tell if its a 2020 or older or is there a way. i have seen in places where there are old ones at the same price

The older OG tatula sv has a ported frame where your thumb would rest.
New video.
I just got a new Tatula Elite EL I think it’s called. (Long cast)
I haven’t used it yet. But it sure feels nice.
Now I have to look at the new Tatula SV vs. Elite P/F. But I’ll end up with both, probably.
$$$$$
Anyone have thoughts on the release of the 2020 SV today? Looks like a Tatula 100 frame and 25yds more line capacity. just got the my first baitcaster the older SV and am thinking about returning since this one seems smaller. Any thoughts from someone more experienced than me? Thanks guys

Do you palm your reels, and if so does the Tatula SV TW feel good when doing so? For me, I didn't like how it palmed in my hand for the techniques I wanted it for. I ended up replacing them with Alphas SV105's. I got a Tatula100 and it palms much better, but still not as good as the SV105. Basically, I'd get a SV105 all day but if you can't find something similar or don't want a used reel and the Tatula SV TW doesn't feel great in your hands, go for the 2020 SV...IMO. If you don't care about palming the reel and grip it from the back, stick with what works.
Cant wait to get my hands on one lol or two lol!

You need to look around I think. I've been seeing the older model selling from Japan at around $160.

The new one can be had for as low as $180 from Japan.
I got mine last week. Won't be able to fish it until next weekend but I did some casts and pitches in the yard and I think I'm going to really enjoy fishing with this reel ????
I ordered one this morning. I was looking for a high gear-ratio reel and figured for under $200 it was worth it to take a chance on it.
Very curious to see how it casts on the lower end of things.
I was casting a 1/8 oz weight with a senko. Not light by any means but I had the brakes at 6 and it was casting really far without a hint of line fluffing. I'm sure it will handle pretty light stuff just fine.
will this lower the old model prices, I like the look way better. this looks like the cured 70 lol

My benchmark for “light stuff” is a weightless Trickworm. Right at 1/4oz w/ hook and not super aerodynamic. It’s also usually the lightest presentation that I want to throw on heavier line.

let me ask you this, going to go with a Dobyns extreme 702 finesse for my shakey head rod and other but mainly for shakey head, looking for a light weight reel, how do you think this would pair up, any other suggestions?

Would prefer an alphas ctsv or sv105 for it but the tat sv will be fine as well
If you get a new daiwa , grease up the main gear and oil the bearings. They come with virtually no grease for whatever reason.

A lot of daiwa's as of late have come under lubricated on the main/pinion. Take the handle side plate of the reel off, clean the main gear by placing it in a 50/50 bath of simple green and hot water to loosen up any of the current grease. Then spray the main gear off /w brake clean or QD elec cleaner and then just give it a quick rinse /w hot water and let it dry. I use brake clean as opposed to a soft bristle brush that alot of people use because , depending on the reel, certain gears can be coated a certain way or be a softer material. Using a brush can alter the index the gears are made for and will create a less smooth retrieve. I never scrub gears or need to this way. They come out perfect. I like to use a paint brush to paint the grease on on the main gear into the teeth. Put the gears back in place, gently rotate them to spread the grease and wipe away the extra. Reassemble . I prefer ZPI medium Fzero and Daiwa space age Blue. Super Lube, Penn reel grease and Shimano ACE2 are also good gear lubricants.

Thanks so the Main gear (largest gear in reel I’m assuming needs more grease in the teeth area and that should solve some of the noise problems I’ve been having in the spool area when I’m retrieving baits? I’ve only fished it about 10 times but it is much louder now than when I initially bought the real and I can hear it emanating from what sounds to be the spool area

Yes, the main gear is the largest gear in the reel. Don't add more grease. Clean it and apply your own. Don't mix and match lubricants. As for the noise, could help. Noises are hard to diagnose. I wouldn't continue to use it until I popped it open though. The reel shouldn't have a noise associated /w the pinion/spool area on the retrieve, especially new. This dry gear issue is a problem that hopefully is being addressed. I do have 1 tatula 100 I bought to try because I love the Steez SVTW/Steez A platform and they are fairly similar size wise. Mine is buttery smooth and has no noises. I've also added bearings to the levelwind. However, I've also had to fix quite a few for others that had bad gear sets which is a large problem /w the Tatula 100 platform. The gear set availability has a 2-6 month backlog...
Everybody does their own thing. I don't degrease anything , I just add a bead of daiwa blue space age grease around the main gear , turn it a few times and wipe off the excess from around the pinion. Daiwa has said that the space age grease is the same as what they use at the factory but , it has blue dye in it. I do add Cal's grease to the carbon drag washer , because it comes dry also. I leave the red drag washer alone , I've found they don't do well all greased up. A drop of oil on each spool bearing and the pinion bearing and you're good to go. Make sure you get the screws just as tight as they were from the factory.

Thanks I think it started after I tried to whip a cast out hard and it felt like the reel locked up and made a grinding noise. I’ve had that happen 3 times. Any thoughts on what could cause the reel to lock up like that

clutch not engaging completely causing it to halt mid cast would be my first thought. When that happens and the reel kind of half engages/disengages, you can hear the gears and pinion grind against each other or the spool pin rubbing the bottom of the pinion. It's a terrible noise and the damage can be....bad. Could be a few things either way.

I had one doing the same thing occassionally. Bad noise on cast almost like ceramics, locking up mid-cast sometimes. A few drops of oil seemed to fix it.

Functionally, they're identical. The US version is just really plane jane grey accent through the series but has a 90mm handle. The JDM version has color coordinating accents /w an 85mm handle.
You can pre order them (The US version)at the TackleTrap for 199 and use code BBC10 or TT10 for 10% off.
Had my first experience with an SV today throwing a weightless fluke paired with a Jacob Wheeler series 7’ MH/F rod with 15lb Big game. Let me just say that I kept showing my buddy every other cast look, no backlash....no backlash. Reel is simply awesome.

I have two SV. The coastal is good but the tatula 103 has noise when I retrieve crankbait. The t wing is so loose. It will hit the axis sometimes. It's totally fine when I retrieve spinner and senko though.

Check to see if the pawl retainer nut has loosened. If so tighten it, but don't over tighten.

Too bad I just can't bring myself to put a Daiwa reel on my Shimano or Loomis rods. ????
This one looks sweet!
On 2/20/2020 at 3:07 PM, smallies24/7 said:Not interested in this one Luke?
It’s not that I’m not interested more so that I’m hesitant on the durability of the gear material. I have no doubt it will perform well however I’ve had to open up my fair share of the 100 platform tatulas for people and a lot of them share the same issues… Bad gears. I don’t know if it’s a coating that they use or of the metal it’s just a softer brass but when I inquired with the mothership (daiwa) about ordering them, there is a 2 to 6 month backorder on all 100 platform gear sets. (Tatula, elites, new sv) . Lots of bad gears being replaced. Now some of that could be production of new reels But that is a massive backlog so if you get a bad gear set you are up a creek for quite a while. I think the largest contributing factor to this big deal is the lack of Grease that they are not putting on their reels at the factory. There is a lot of reports of these coming dry and That will ruin them quickly. I do have a 100 that ive had for a year . I opened it up like I do all reels initially and cleaned it. Its a ridiculously smooth reel. Fortunately....theres a JDM version of this reel so PLAT should have the gears in stock and more available than daiwa usa

No, but thank you. I'm just trying to be helpful. I do have two Tatula reels, mostly because they are heavy enough to balance St.Croix rods. They are decent enough I think but for the most part I'll stick to my TD-Z, Pixies and Steez reels. Though I am thinking about picking up one of the Alpha Air before they are gone. I have a nice Black Label ML mod. that is sitting empty.
I have a fair number of high/mid range Daiwa reels and I am really liking the new Tat SV so far. I bought mine for a frog rod so it has not seen more than a dozen hours of use but so far I am very impressed with it. Same rod, same lure, but with heavier line (50lb PP vs 40lb PP) the Tat SV would match or outcast my SV103 w/ sv1016 spool. On a different rod I used it to throw ~2.25oz swimbaits and other then bumping the brakes up a little, it still gave good distance and control. The 50lb braid I have it spooled with isn't ideal for showing off its lower end, but on a 783c it would pitch a weightless Trickworm about as well as an Alphas SV loaded with 16lb Shooter, which is to say "not super great", but I was impressed enough to want to get a second spool for it so I can play around more.
The only down side so far is the smaller spool and loss of capacity. It was only noticeable really when it was on a 7'5" frog rod, but with the brakes about 50/50 I could easily cast like 2/3 of the spool off. I think that I don't make super long casts in general so that might be more of and issue for those that do.
I obviously can't speak to its long term durability, but if it stays smooth then it will be a hard sell for me to buy any more new higher end reels. I am pretty invested in the 34mm spool family but right now there isn't a single current 34mm offering that I think is really worth close to the MSRP or even the street price really. If the new Tat SV keeps impressing I think I will end up with a few of them.

I have no doubt it will perform well however I’ve had to open up my fair share of the 100 platform tatulas for people and a lot of them share the same issues… Bad gears.
My Fuego CTs have held up, but my '17 Tat SV went geary with several servicings and less abuse. It's not terrible, but noticeable. I fished and caught fish with it yesterday.
I have no idea if they use multiple vendors for their gears, but if they do it's not out of the question that a different brass alloy was used in different runs. I doubt the spec is super stringent. They're not aircraft parts after all. The possible result can be what I have here, but that's just pure speculation. I'm disregarding many other factors that may be the culprit. It doesn't matter why as I'll never know. I'll just run this Tat out until it drops, and will definitely step up to a free floating SV spool type next time to remove the lack of a fully supported pinion from the mystery equation. More speculation on my part.
Anyway, my new pinion showed up the other day without the main gear that I'd been told was on backorder. Your comment about gears sets being on a 2-6 month backorder freaked me out, so I called them just a few minutes ago. They have fresh stock as of a week ago. I'm in the queue, but they assured me there's plenty of stock now and that I'll be receiving a shipping notification shortly. Get 'em while they're hot!

Which gear set did you call about? The Tat SV that you have or the new Tat 100?I ask because they're different gear sets. The 2-6 month timetable I was given was in reference to the new 100 gearset.

The '17 Tat SV. They said 2-6 months lead time from backorder is for any model, and typical in the industry. Hmmm? This only makes sense if they wait for a completely depleted stock before they re-order.

Somebody was blowing smoke up your tooshie on "all have 2-6 month lead times". Ive never had an issue ordering gear sets in the past same day for reels that are current . Heck even the TackleTrap has most current sets in stock or can get them within a week. The Tat 100 is the ugly step child I guess. those have been out of stock for many a moon.

It was the dude who picked up on the consumer parts line at Daiwa. Hopefully he wasn't also snowing me about my gear shipping "any day now". TT is sold out of the 7:3:1 gear set or I would've put it in my order from last week. I grabbed a spare roller clutch from them though. It is was 5 bucks less than what Daiwa wanted.
Anyway, I wonder if this issue will show up in the Elites?
P.S. The squeaky reel gets the grease. I just received a shipping notification from Daiwa. My main gear is on the way. I'm glad I only processed a few fragments your post and ended up calling them.
Anyone ever order from The Tackle Trap? They are the only US based that has the new 2020 Tatula SV in stock. Are they legit?

Legit as they come.
Just got the new 2020 Tatula SV and was wondering if any other people feel the brakes are a little looser compared to the previous gen. I was using the prior model with a brake setting of 8 and on the new one I’m at 12 and still having overruns. Any thoughts on why this could be happening? I’m still new to baitcasting reels. I do feel the size of the new reel is very nice
I just bought my first Diawa baitcaster on Friday for my birthday. I bought a Tatula SV TW 103H. I have to say I'm blown away by its performance. All the videos online say it's made to cast light to heavy lures. So I put on a seven inch Power worm and five inch (I think) Jelly Worm using 3/16 and 1/4 bullet weights and this thing casts those things amazingly well. So I just went outside and tried using a small 1/8 bullet weight and Jelly Worm and to my shock I could still cast a good distance with no backlash. Yeah, I'm not casting a country mile, but I'm easily casting regular cast distance or longer. This real is amazing.

There's a tackle shop in my area that has a huge display of the latest reels from top to bottom. They're happy to let anyone fondle the them, so I fondle away. I've noticed that the newer Daiwas with the zero adjust spool tension knob are somewhat inconsistent regarding the amount of side to side play the spool has. if you place your thumb on the spool and try to move the spool from left to right, and you can, it might be too loose. If you can hear a slight click you can tighten the tension knob a skosh, but just enough to eliminate the play.
Check it out, then adjust accordingly if necessary. It doesn't sound as if the inductor is stuck, but no there's harm in checking it. Report back.

That’s one of the things I thought about. I found the zero adjust had a ton of play when I took it out of the box so I tightened it up a little maybe I need to tighten it up a little more. I’m assuming the breaking system is exactly the same as the Tatula SV I returned and the only thing that could be different is how tight the spool tension knob is.

They might've changed the braking profile. If so, the position of the dial is insignificant. Don't get hung up on it. Just adjust it to where it's effective with the line you're using and bait you're throwing.

Depress the thumbar and adjust the zero knob to just as it hits zero movement in the spool.
Toronto fishing shop Pro J just posted this comparison on the old vs new tatula sv. Wow...

Dang, size difference is not what I was expecting.
I like the size of my current Daiwa reels and not expecting to be pleased with anything smaller. Hopefully the new reels will be comfortable. I need to try one out soon so I can hoard the old models if necessary.

Man, I like the feel of a 300 size reel in my hand. There is no way I am going to like those tiny things. I will stick with my cts, ct type r's and the two SV models I have.
I like the size of the old one better. I have a Tatula 100 and It’s too small and uncomfortable to me.
