I know some info has been in the bantam vs metanium thread but I thought we could update future info here. I searched so if there's already a thread please delete this. I know the reel test on YouTube has had some pictures that were posted here. I'm currently actually wondering what differences there may be,especially since the jdm metanium mgl can be had now under $300 usd
The big fishing show in Japan I believe starts on the 17th so I am sure in a few days there will be lots of details on all the new stuff.

Read it was going to use the core solid frame like the Bantam but in a lighter package.

Count me in
If it's a core frame like the Bantam, but it's stretched out like the Met MGL, then I'll probably be selling a few reels and replacing them with these.

I agree. Stretching out the bantam is the only thing keeping me from buying more
They probably did the core solid body in magnesium to keep the weight down and kept the bigger frame and spool capacity to differentiate it from the Bantam. Maybe added a couple of bearings more than the Bantam also.

You think they'd add more bearings if they wanted to keep weight down? If they won't even put brass gears, more bearings sounds silly.
It will have a brass main gear....

It was just a guess. Calm down.

Leaked information is not always accurate. For example, remember when everyone thought the SLX MGL was coming to the US last year? It never happened. I have heard some info saying it won't be brass but some saying it will be. We will know shortly for sure
I asked my local dealer and he wasn't sure about the gears. So it must be secret lol

Are there any engineers or fabrication experts here? I did a bit of CNC many moons ago and was trying to figure out how they made the one piece frame. Is it machined from a solid block or do they use a mold?
I'm going to have a full deck of them! Im going to buy them up lol

Looks like about the same size as the Bantam with the line guide a bit further away. Curious to know what other differences there are.

Oh my!
Any idea if it will follow the JDM pricing of the current metanium? Currently you can import those for right around $100 less than the US version. Also, any insight on if it's a US, JDM or both reel

You can probably assume it will be cheaper via JDM than USDM, and there is a 0% chance they DON'T bring this to the US. This is a big deal flagship reel.

I was planning on buying a few Curado DC reels before Spring but I'm having second thoughts.
I might buy a few of these instead.
When do you think we'll see a release date on LH models? I know the LH retrieve Shimano models are always a few months behind the RH.

This drives me INSANE. Why should us normal guys be punished while a bunch of right handed weirdos switch hands after every cast?
It basically just looks like a magnesium Bantam. Not that that's a bad thing. I absolutely love my Bantams and would love one of these for my Expride. I just wonder how much more they're going to charge for probably ~1oz less weight than the Bantam.

March right hand May left hand.
From what I can see the list is 44,100 yen same as the 16.....if that holds true you would be able not get it shipped for around 289.

Digitaka lists the current metanium mgl for 31,800 yen which is around $289. Maybe they reduced the price of the current metanium? I believe it's been around that price for awhile. You've been able to get the metanium mgl on ebay for $300 for at least a year.

$299-$319 was achievable as the reel was 4-5 years old. Plus, people knew a new reel was coming. When it comes out, there won't be as good of deals.... I tried already hahahahaha. There will be a ton of demand for the reels. Over time and the reel has been out longer, prices will go down. It will be an awesome reel though

Probably right. It all depends on how well the will sell. We will just have to wait and see

Thanks, well looks like I'll be grabbing a few Curado DC's as I can't wait until May. I'll try and get a Metanium early summer.
Funny that anyone would expect a brand new reel to cost what a 4 year old reel eventually got dropped to. If it wasn't clear, the current JDM price on 16 Mets is crazy low and a lot lower than what it initially retailed for. Wishful thinking for sure..... guaranteed it will not be $300 right out of the gate. More like $400. Sorry guys.

It's listed as 44100 JPY which equals $401
And now the 2020 Zodias is going to have the monocoque grip like the Poison Arena sports. Geez, it's going to be a rough Spring on the wallet. LOL
Also releasing an SLX DC
The timing is perfect, I was almost ready to order a 16 Met MGL, but I'll think I'll wait.

Anybody have a source on getting brass gears for the 16 model? I have not had any issues, but wouldn't mind grabbing a couple sets.
Wonder what gear ratios will be offered on the 2020, Shimano's website is only showing one, 6.2:1

You can get them from Tackle Trap for around 50 bucks includes brass main and pinion gear along with carbontex washers.......https://tackletrap.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=898_792_793

Looks like they got more of them in stock. I needed a set about a month ago and they were sold out of LH gears.
I ended up buying a new Curado K, swapping out the gears, and then selling off the Curado with the stock Metanium gears in it.

Thanks. That's what I've heard too. I've also heard the Adrena's are a bit softer and more parabolic than some people were used to. I guess when you're trying to make a super light blank you have to compromise a bit on the stoutness or the type of action that really hits hard when you set.

should just rename this thread to; New 2020 Shimano Release's ????
Yeah I'm a big fan of Shimano gear but I'm also very particular about the action of rods for specific applications. It's a bit less of a gamble with reels but rods can vary a lot and I prefer a faster action with a hard hitting backbone for pitching in the weeds, which is what I'm doing most of the time if I'm fishing for largemouth.
Expect to pay full retail on JDM pre-orders. With patience and timing, street price will likely be in the low $300s even at launch. In the past new reels have launched at street prices. That being said this is - for all intents and purpose - a Core 70. I wouldn't be surprised if street price is full retail.
This should also creat a great opp to get previous generation Metaniums at very affordable levels as people make room for this generation.
Just when I thought I had a solid collection of Metanium MGL's, Shimano releases this... I'll never be cool enough, just broke.

Not a bad price for $315, give or take a little due to the exchange rate.
Digitaka normally has great prices.
Might have to pick up at least two when they become available.

Does this mean the current metanium will go down to $200? LET'S HOPE SO
Digitaka is forcing buyers to use paypal, where you receive a horrible exchange rate, or pay a 5% CC processing fee. I'm getting ready to order a couple of reels, and am looking at going with Japan Lure Shop or JPangler, which are also great sites I've ordered from before. They just dont seem to get the stock digitaka does.
I'm getting the US version for $330/each since I'm buying in bulk...

That's a lot for a frog rod... you could get an Expride 73XH and be almost as light and almost as sensitive, for $80 less. And I don't need the sensitivity, I just want the lightness. I will use it for flipping too so sensitivity is good but you don't need a ton of sensitivity for flipping either.

If it is as stout as that 73XH Expride I will need to look elsewhere for a new frog rod anyway

The Expride 73XH is rated for 1/2oz to 2oz. The Poison Adrena 74H is rated for 3/8oz to 2oz. If you think it won't be stout, you're kidding yourself. It's a ModFast taper so yes it will be slower, but it will still have a lot of backbone.

Yeah, Shimano got my money for 2 of their flagship Met MGL's.
"the Shimano Metanium MGL Casting Reel is in a league of its own." - Shimano
"Delivering advanced tournament caliber performance for a range of bass fishing applications" - Shimano
I think I'll wait a year or two and see what they screwed up on the new one. I'm afraid they've gotten a bit too sloppy, or slipshod, or something, but it's not a good way to treat your customers. Did anyone at Shimano actually fish the Met MGL's hard for a year before they put them on the market?
"Oops." - Shimano's new marketing phrase.
