Questions about KastKing Sharky III Fishing Reel - New Spinning Reel - Carbon Fiber 39.5 LBs Max Drag - 10+1 Stainless BB for Saltwater or Freshwater - Oversize Shaft - Super Value!
Q:
Can this reel switch from left to right hand
Answer: Yes, this reel can switch from left to right with ease. Just about all of these types of spinning reels are capable of that.
Answer: Yes, just unscrew the reel handle and the stop on the other end and swap the side the reel is on.
Answer: Yes I switched mine over
Answer: Yes. You simply remove the handle, and attach it to the other side.
Answer: Yes I fish it as a lefty
Answer: Yes it can
Q:
What size reel would be good for 7' Medium light rod?
Answer: I have 2 of the 4000 models on my 7 foot rods. They work like a charm. The 3000 would probably work just fine but I got the 4000s for the added capacity for long distance fishing from shore.
Answer: What is the weight capacity on the rod? If it's for 35lb then I would definitely go for the 4000. If your pole is for 25lb then get the 3000
Answer: I would go with 3000.
Answer: I got a 3000, works perfectly
Answer: 3000
Q:
Does the sharky III 4000 have a bait clicker?
Answer: I have the 5000 and its line capacity is 190 yards of #40 braid. I put #30 to get 220 yards. The 5000 has the same weight as the 4000, 9.5 oz. Depend on the type of fish to catch, if you catch big jack it probably runs 190 yards of the #40 line out. If line capacity is important to you go with Daiwa BG 4500 and up, or step up to Penn Spinfisher V ssv6500. Hope this help.
Answer: No it does not. Check out the KastKing Sharky Baitfeeder III that reel has a bait clicker.
Q:
Does this reel come preloaded with line?
Answer: No it does not come preloaded with line. You will have to buy your own line.
Answer: No the Sharky III does not come preloaded with line.
Answer: No so I paired it with 15 lb braided line from Kast King as well.
Answer: No! you want to choose the line for the type a Fishing you are doing This is a great real you can do a lot of Different type of fishing with it
Answer: No
Answer: No
Q:
Why is the spool have a long wire inside
Answer: No wire on the spool, there’s a rubber middle section so your braid won’t slip when spooling
Q:
Will this reel catch catatafeesh?
Answer: Small catfish. 3000 up would be a better size.
Answer: Use mine for steelhead and salmon. Works great . Like the drag.
Answer: Yes, but only if using Lemmiwinks bait.
Answer: Yes it will!!!
Answer: Yes
Q:
Sharky III bail's wont close by rotating the handle after casting, is that normal? or its manual bail system?
Answer: My Sharky 3 bail will close by turning the handle. A drop of oil may fix this. But using the handle to “automatically” close the bail really isn’t a good practice. It can induce a “loose spot” in your line that can cause birds nest when casting, and is actually kinda hard on the reel. I suggest manually closing the bail every time.....you and your reel will love it!!
Answer: It is normal.
Q:
When will this be available for shipping to Singapore? Currently I'm unable to do so.
Q:
what line should i use for the 5000 aim doing freshwater fishing for bass and pike
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: We would recommend kastPro or Super Power braid. We do have a Premium Monofilament if you prefer mono. Pair your line weight with your rod and the type of fish you are looking to catch. 30-50lb should be good for Mucky or Pike.
Answer: I spooled mine with 30 lb Kastking Superpower braid.
Q:
Is kastking sharky 3 3000 sold out?

What is the difference between 3000 4000 ect.
Answer: The 3000 weighs 9.4oz the 4000 weighs 10.5oz

Q:

Answer: It’s medium sized reel.I didn’t use it yet. Maybe not bad.
Answer: Sharky BF 6000
Q:
Can this reel be used for trolling with a down rigger?
Answer: Hi David,
Answer: It could be but depending on the species of fish you may want to go a bigger size in the reel. I use this for drop shot here in northern cal. And it capable of catching largemouth bass as well as spotted bass up to 5,6 Lbs.
Answer: Don't see why not, but depending on how deep, you might need thicker lines.
Q:
Can I buy a spare spool for this reel? I couldn’t find a spare spool when I searched.

Answer: Get the Sharky III 5000 model would definitely fit a smaller 6’Rod and it’s not bulky at all would be perfect for your needs ????

Q:
When will a 1000 size be available?
Q:
Would this be a good soft bait reel, like worms or tubes for bass fing in freshwater?
Answer: Yes this would be a good reel for soft plastics like worms and tubes. I just recently purchased one of these for the same purpose have been very happy with the reel so far.
Answer: I don't see why not. It cast smooth and has a great retrieval.
Answer: Absolutely! 75% of what we use it for.
Answer: Yes great choice.
Q:
Does reel fit berrypro surf fishing rod https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/b07prsss7j/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=a200b1kk9ox8jb&psc=1
Answer: I'm afraid I have to say, don't buy this reel. I now own 2 and will eventually replace them. The 39.5 lb drag that I was amazed by before purchase just makes a wrong noise. It never seemed right and after a couple fish i guess has turned into trash.
Answer: The Sharky 3 5000 is small for a rod over 8ft long. It’s very small for a 5000. The bait feeder models are larger. (. The 5000 baitfeeder and 5000 non baitfeeder are not the same size). I would go with the 6000 baitfeeder
Answer: yes
Q:
I need a bigger knob that will fit this reel, can anyone tell me wbat will work ?
Answer: Contact the company who made it.
Q:
Whats the best reel and rod set up for catfish and max line weight?
Answer: Depending on the size of cats you're going for, I'd use a size 4000 or 5000 reel with a heavy size KastKing catfish rod. Use 50,65 or 80 lb. braid
Answer: The two largest KastKing Sharky's would be in my opinion best suited. Cat's can get pretty big, really tax your entire rig system. Consult the catfish fishing forums for specifics regarding appropriate rigging, lines, leaders and especially the rod. I am primarily an inshore, light rigged saltwater angler and occasional trout hunter.
Q:
Is this reel salt water rated?
Answer: Its utter trash. I only salt water fish. Mine lasted fights with 2 snook and 1 redfish before the drag just quit working. All of this stuff - the rods, the reels that is kastking or sougilygang is all just trash. Spend a little extra for a Penn Fierce combo which is 10x the quality.
Answer: It is rated for salt water use. I have used it for a year now and been happy with it for the price
Answer: I believe it says that in the description. That's is why I bought it--to use in salt water.
Answer: I have the Sharky Baitfeeder 111 6000 on a 10' mh surf rod & like it very much, No Problems
Answer: I bought this mainly for saltwater fishing and it has served me well so far. After fishing just tighten the drag, rinse (don't sock) thoroughly and then leave to dry. Once dried up, release the drag and store till next trip. Hope this helps.
Answer: Yes it is
Answer: Yes it is.

Answer: Mine broke the 10th time I used it. I wouldn't put any faith in these reels.
Q:
I didn't get the right reel i got a bait runner instead of a sharky3 5000
Answer: Sounds like you need to go back to customer service of the supplier.
Q:
Will the 3000 size hold and perform with 12lb mono ok ? I noticed it recommends 10lb at the highest...i'll be using trilene big game 12lb.

Answer: In my opinion, no, you need a minumim 6000 series reeal for a surf rod.
Q:
What's the max size braid line can the 5000 reel handle?
Answer: It's not a huge reel so i would stick with 30-40 lbs max otherwise you won't have a whole lot of line on the reel.
Answer: 40 to 50 lb Max! I use 40lb personally myself And I think that works good with the drag rating of the real!!
Answer: All braid has a different thickness the braid I use I can put up to 80lbs and be fine just depends what your using it for
Q:
What size would you recommend for a 10’ surf casting rod setup for stripers? I will mainly be throwing pencil poppers. Thanks!
Answer: The 5000 is the largest and would be considered to small for that set up. Take a look at the 8000 and 10,000 Sharky II
Answer: It looks like a good reel but l live in Vt. We don’t start fishing until April.
Q:
What is the mono line capacity of the 2000 size reel?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I'm not sure, I have the 4000
Answer: I don't know I have the 4000.
Q:
Can this be used in Freshwater?
Answer: Absolutely. Any reel can be used in freshwater, it's saltwater that can be tough on reels with mostly corrosive parts.

Q:
Pairing the 4000 w/ the ugly Stik elite 7’ medium heavy for spotted sea bass. What’s best braided line for this combo?
Answer: 30lb braid 50lb mono leader
Answer: Do you like chocolate, strawberry or vanilla? They are all good. Get one that will handle the weight of your intended catch and pick a brand that appeals to you for whatever reason.
Answer: I personally use 30lb with mine.
Q:
I have a 7ft heavy penn pole/rod, i plan to fish with it off of the pier and also deep-sea fish with it... which Reel do you guys recommend
Answer: We would recommend the largest size, the 5000.
Answer: 5000
Q:
What kind of rod works with the 4000? Is this overkill for small lakes? Bass and trout?
Answer: Yes, i think its overkill for small lakes. I got the 2000 myself and its perfect for even inshore saltwater fishing. I personally think it holds more line for a 2000 then other brands out there.
Q:
Can the handle be switched from for left or right handed?
Answer: Yes ambidextrous
Answer: Yes.
Q:
Which is best for primarily bass fishing? I am torn between the 2000 and 3000, opinions?
Answer: I have the 5000 it is super lite. Super fast and super strong. I wouldn't get the 2000 or the 3000 because the 5000 is good for any type of fishing. I have 135 rods with penn , king cast, shimano and some other and i can tell u this is one of my favorite. Thanks
Answer: Most of the bass and catfish I catch are 1 to 3 pounds, occasionally up to 5. For my purposes, the 3000 is just perfect!
Answer: Hi there,
Answer: 2000
Answer: 2000
Q:
When are more available?
Answer: Never
Q:
I just got into bass fishing i wanna know which size reel should i get and should i got for a medium light are just medium rod?
Answer: Strip Bass fishing, if you're surf casting and not out of a pier, you could do a medium light with a 3000 sharky, but for boat and pier fishing I suggest a medium heavy set up along with a 3000 series should be a lot easier to get the fish in, but how much fun and experience you want to have with the fight is up to you
Answer: I have the 4000 series, but its for the ocean and western rivers where a typical salmon is 15 lbs or more and pulls like hell. I wind it with BIG GAME 12 lb test. Smaller version of this reel is better for bass. But many use a levelwind style for bass. It should be sized with your line type.
Answer: The Sharky III 3000 is a great universal size for most bass fishing. It would pair nicely with a medium light or medium rod. You would want to consider the size of fish you are looking to catch when selecting the rod type.
Answer: I use a light rod with the 2000 style and it works just fine with it. I'm pretty sure it will work with a medium rod just as well.
Answer: I use this on a drop shot rod here in nor cal. It’s a very nice reel plenty of drag and the 200 is the size I use.
Q:
4000 or 3000
Answer: It really depends on your application. I have the 4000 and I feel that the overall size is smaller compared to other manufacturer’s size 4000 reels.
Answer: 3000
Q:
Where is it made
Answer: Designed in US. Made in China.
Answer: China
Q:
What weight line will it hold?
Answer: I use 25# KastKing KastPro Braided Line on my Sharky3 3000, and it casts smooth as butter.. There is a chart that will tell you the line capacity of each model at the bottom of the product page. It really depends on what style of fishing you are gonna do, which model you choose, and what type of line you choose. each type of line has a different diameter..
Q:
I recently bought the Sharky 3 1,000 and had trouble spoiling it off the bat. The line stays in the bottom. Can someone please help?
Answer: I don’t quite get what your referring too . Spoiling a reel is pretty explanatory?.....
Product reviews of KastKing Sharky III Fishing Reel - New Spinning Reel - Carbon Fiber 39.5 LBs Max Drag - 10+1 Stainless BB for Saltwater or Freshwater - Oversize Shaft - Super Value!
Eddy Tor : Surf, rinse, a little WD40, good to go.
This is my surf and rockfish catching reel. Used it in the surf for perch, off rocks and jetties for rock fish. I took a chance on buying it January of 2018 and passing on the spendier brand names and have been very happy with. I have had it in the surf with sand swirling in the water, still works. I had a couple of the “brand reels” fail doing that before. I mean, you don’t intend to do but, if you in the surf sooner or later your reel will go in. Climbing down a cliff on the Oregon coast once, I slipped and face planted, (embarrassing when you’re with friends), rod and reel submerged in mud. I rinsed it of and fished it the whole day.
Surf, home, rinse, dry, a little wd40, good to go.
Very pleased with this reel.
Kindle Customer : Right in the box it impressed me
I buy lots of reels, Daiwa, Shimano and Penn mainly. I expected little for a $50 reel but this is like others twice that price. Well packaged. I would have liked a slightly thinner spool spacer due to the very thin line i use(berkley x9) but will call the company and see if i can get one. nice reel.
Richard : The reel has a monster spool and holds a lot ...
The reel has a monster spool and holds a lot of line. With 10# braided splder wire it took over 300 yards. So if you are going to use braided line you probably should back it with mono. The reel requires considerable force to close after casting. Very smooth and balanced retrieve. If the bail closer was more traditional I would have given it 5 stars.
mavmed : Sharkey III 2000
Started use on 4/26/18. Used on 11 fishing trips as of 5/22. Mainly throwing 1/8-oz spoons fishing from edge of a lake. Estimated minimum 900 casts as of 5/22. Paired with Perigee II spin rod with medium light action tip and Berkley Trilene XL clear smooth cast 6-lb test mono line with stainless #0 barrel swivel. I stretch this line on occasion by attaching an old lure to a post and running the line out 70-80 yards or so. Then reel back in with light drag. There is no line made that won't throw a loop in the reel on occasion due to wind and memory on any reel. Casting light lures do not help.
I had estimated 3.5-lb RB trout and 5-lb LMB spool me for a short distance. Both landed and released. Spool action was smooth.
Kyle C. : Cheap
I've had this reel for 2 months now, and I used it once in a freshwater lake. The reel was used from a boat and never got dunked. I took it out yesterday on the kayak and it was binding up so bad it had become a chore to use. I had the Sharky II for a year or so with good luck. It ended up failing due to me not cleaning it after saltwater from a recent trip. For the money I expected this one to last more than one trip out.
Hops : Heavy duty, smooth and braid ready
The KastKing Sharky III is a powerful and smooth reel. It feels like it is built very tough and has extremely smooth drag. I used it today with 10 lb braid and the drag did not fail me when catching 8 fish that pulled drag. The overall size appears a little smaller than other reels in the same size catagory but it still has the line capacity that is needed. The handle and wire for spool is thicker (tougher) than most reels in this price range. The spool is also braid ready so I was able to tie directly to the spool.
The Riz : I couldn't be more pleased. I chose the 3000 to go with my ...
I am sure I will boost the Sharky III to a 5 star rating once I have had a chance to use it for awhile. For now, its high quality was obvious the minute I picked it up. It makes a striking combination with my Ugly Stik as both are black trimmed with red. The follow up from customer service is what one expects from a seller whose top goal is buyer satisfaction. I couldn't be more pleased. I chose the 3000 to go with my 6' light Ugly Stick as both are compatible with 8 lb mono...my line of choice. I really think everyone looking for a spinning reel needs to get this one in their hands. It sells itself.
Reynaldo Torres : ABSOLUTE GARBAGE !!! DO NOT BUY !!! BAIL HITS TOP OF SPOOL !!!
I really wanted to love this reel. USA retailer, good quality etc, but I can’t recommend it at all. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to use it right away and by the time I did the return window was closed. Here’s the problem and you can see by the photos as well. When the spool is at the top point of its travel and you try to open up the bail it will hit the top of the spool/drag adjustment. Even worse is if it doesn’t hit the top of the spool, but is very close it will cause tangles in the line which don’t always notice at first and then all of a sudden you got a cast and you have a big birds nest on it. This happened to me and caused me to lose literally have a spool of brand new braid which you know isn’t particularly cheap. The only way to help the situation is to tighten the drag so far down that it’s super tight and that will give it a little bit more clearance for the bail. This is completely unacceptable. I contacted Kast king for help, but got zero response and then I tried to return it but the return window for Amazon was closed. I can’t believe I’m the only person who has this problem. So unfortunately as much as I wanted to love this real I can’t and since Kast King never responded to my email I cannot give their customer service a good recommendation either. If this changes in the future I will update my review but as of now I will never buy another Kast King product
Cathie D. : Nice braid ready reel
I bought this mainly for freshwater bass fishing and some shoreline saltwater fishing. A small but nice thing is that it comes ready to spool braid line on it. No worries about the braid slipping or tying a leader on first...just spool it on. I've got the 4000 model and it casts and reels in very smoothly. So far I'm very pleased with it. Definitely much better than other reels at this price. Just be sure to clean it properly when saltwater fishing (don't blast the reel with water, just wipe it down).
Tamara : THE BEST REEL I EVER OWNED!!!
Love love love!! Paired it with a KastKing Royalle Rod 7 foot..Absolutely perfect fit and match. Its braid ready and I attached the braid right to it, no backing or tape required. When I used it out fishing it was awesome. Such a smooth reel and so quiet. No slippage or anything. Very nice..I can use it lefty if I like, which I do, I'm weird like that. After years of fishing, this is by far the best rod and reel I have ever owned. Definately will recommend and buy again when I'm ready for a larger one for a big surf rod and reel..Or as a gift..Happy fishing all :)
REC : Super nice spinning reel
I have been doing research for a new spinning reel, medium to medium heavy reel for walleye and bass fishing, and came across the Sharky III. It was in the top 10 best spinning reels and I looked at a lot of surveys. I had never heard of KastKing before doing research. I have been a die hard Quantum and Pflueger guy for many years, but decided to give KastKing a try. I purchased the Sharky III and a KastKing Perigee II Fishing Rod and was amazed at the quality and look of both the rod and the reel. Upon using the combo for the first time I was essentially hooked on KastKing. Excellent casting, smooth drag, and great feel above and beyond what I expected for a combo of this price. I have spent 150+ on rods and reels alone, but this combo was just over a 100 bucks and worth every penny. Spooled it with 8# braid, and use it daily.
Philip : I Own 4 Now
I love these reals and own: 1000x1, 2000x2, and 3000x1, All Spinning
The quality is simply outstanding at an excellent price. I like that they are an American company and yes they do import components in order to be competitive. The rubber grip on the spool is high end. The powder coating and finish is also very high end. I have never had the bail jam open or fail to close. The drag so smooth and the adjustment is the right amount of turn from easy to fight, plus I have to hear an audible drag. The spool release switch is right where it should be located. The reals are on the heavy side compared to a 10$ or a $300 real but the quality far outweighs a single extra ounce. I like having color choices so I can quickly identify the setup I want to use. I do not give many product reviews unless they are very deserving.
Jason : Awesome value!
I ordered the KastKing Sharky 3 in a 3000 size along with 20lb KastKing KastPro braid for use in both freshwater and saltwater. This quality of this reel is amazing! After taking several dunks in fresh and saltwater plus a beating from sand the reel still works amazing and the drag is strong as ever. I have bought more since! You won’t be disappointed in this reel!
mavmed : Sharkey III 2000
Melissa : An ok reel for saltwater use
This reel is pretty good, but honestly, I feel like there are better reels in a similar price range. This reel is not as smooth as my Daiwa Exceler, which on Amazon is in the same price range. A good saltwater safe reel in the same price range that is smoother is the Okuma Epixor. I still am satisfied with my purchase, but there are some reels that I would put a little above it in this price range. Now saying that, they are more at other stores. Now for the reel itself. I have had this reel a little more than a year now, using it mostly for saltwater. I have caught many fish with it now. I currently have it paired with an Ugly Stik Elite, formerly an Ugly Stik GX2. It has held up to being splashed and occasionally dropped in sand. It still is going strong today, despite a few little annoyance. The reel has begun to make a strange clicking sound when you turn the handle. I have heard of this happening with many Kastking reels, so it appears that it is not just something with my particular reel. Also, the drag has stopped clicking. That stuff honestly doesn’t impact its performance, it just is annoying. Would I buy this reel again? Maybe, but I probably would go with the less expensive and lighter Valiant Eagle if getting another Kastking spinning reel.
Long : Great reel for the money
I have never left a review on a product but thought this reel deserved it. I own many quality reels such as multiple Stradic ci4 + reels. I bought this reel as a cheap reel to throw in the back of the car after seeing the good reviews. I think for the money this is an excellent purchase, it is almost as smooth as my Stradic reels and not far off in weight. I have already used it in fresh and salt water and caught dozens of fish on it and it has help up good. I have owned some other reels too made by abu Garcia and pflueger both above this price point and I would buy this reel over those. Thy don’t hold up to saltwater nearly as good as this and are heavier and not as smooth. The drag doesn’t come out as smooth as my expensive reels on the kastking and some of the parts are made with cheaper materials but it is very comparable to more expensive reels for the price point and if you are thinking about purchasing it I would get it.
Carcosa : 1 out of 3 reels spools unevenly
I have 2 other Kastking Sharky 3 reels.. a 4000 and a 5000.. I just purchased another one (5000) for a new rod I bought, and I spooled on 30lb braided and it spooled very unevenly filling up the back/bottom and leaving the top with almost no line.
I looked up the fix online and it said to make it spool more at the top I need to remove the spool and take out a washer, unfortunatly the reel only has one washer. I will try fishing with it the way it is but i might have to return it. Before I do that I'm gonna take it to the local sports store and see if they can fix it.
If this changes in the future I will update my review but as of now I will never buy another Kast King product
Chris McVey : Could be the best spinning reel I’ve ever owned.
Could be the one of if not the best spinning reel I’ve ever owned. The drag system is the best I’ve ever seen and it’s just such a spectacular looking reel. Do yourself a favor and purchase one of these. You won’t regret it I now have 4 of them and I use them finesse fishing bass, crappie fishing, Catfishing(Baitfeeder model) and just recently on my Trout/Steelhead rod.
Clinton Fisher : Nothing special, but not bad either
TL;DR
After using it for 8 months all I have to say is it's an alright reel, but nothing special either. Fished saltwater for 18 years, and honestly didn't find anything remarkable about it, just a normal reel in all respects. It works alright for what it is, I honestly do not believe the reel extra bearings matter all that much (only so many places you can place a bearing) at least in the sense where it would improve the reels performance.
It's not a bad reel, but it's not an amazing reel either, I would say for $50 you really can't go wrong but don't expect $100+ quality, it's worth the asking price IMHO but it's not a high end reel sold for cheap.
Luddite : Uneven line retrieval
Nice quiet reel, but doesn’t retrieve the line on the spool in an even manner. I tried two different types of kevlar line and two different kinds of monofilament line. All lines produced the same effect, more line at the bottom of the spool then the top. This lead to the line getting all fouled up. We call them rats nests. The kevlar lines were strung at the stores where I purchased them. The monofilament line I put on myself. I bought this reel because I wanted as light a reel as possible. I own the Kodiak 3000 made by this company and it has been one of my favorite reels. I was very disappointed with the Sharky. Reel returned.

Edward : Kastking 4000 reel
Update on my review.
Used this for a couple of months now and I am impressed how the reel is still smooth after getting hit by waves or getting dunked in salt water.
All I have been doing is washing this water after use and it has been holding up very well(I do intend to put oil on this for maintenance).
The only malfunction I encountered is with the braid not spooling properly, so word of advice for users out there. Make sure you spool your line properly.
Other than that it has handled all the fish I have caught so far with ease due to the good drag system
If you are in the fence on buying this reel. I can say this was worth the price and you wont be disappointed.
Joey : Very smooth, great value!
I have almost 40 years of slat water fishing experience. Based on reviews, I bought 2 of the 4000's and 1 of 3000 size. They are very smooth and a bit smaller than expected for the series. I would say 4000 for Speckled Trout,Redfish and Flounder .if you are wanting a medium to heavy reel for Bigger or saltwater fishing or surf casting. I would go with 5000 series. Although the 38 lb drag should handle any fish I will fight, its just a smaller frame and less line capacity. Very impressed at how balanced and smooth they are. And the price cant be beat when you compare to a Shimano brand or Penn!
Chet : Not a bad little reel
Ok so far reel has been very good. I use it maybe a few times a month when we're at the beach on a 10 ft surf rod with 30lb braid. I've been able to cast quite far. Smooth and seems to be holding up to the saltwater. I've caught all types of fish Snook, Permit and small sharks. I rinse after each use, this is very important if you fish saltwater. Only concern is the size. The 5000 I purchased is about the size of a 3000 or at best 4000 series Penn reel. Reel seems small for its listed size. But so far it's been working great as the occasional surf reel.
Carl : don't buy
Bought two, one for me and one for my wife. First day, had problems with them, line keep getting caught up around the spool, than a grinding noise in mine, after a few hours...I changed them to my old reels.
Yes, I even changed the line!
Garage!
alex : Overrated reel only popular online
I used this reel and another $100 Daiwa BG reel and a few cheap reels.
This reel is better than the $10 cheap reels, but a lot worse than the $100 Daiwa reel. It is not very smooth.
When you reel in with a 5oz sinker, you can feel it is not smooth.
I don't see other friends using this one. Their Daiwa and Shimano reels at similar prices are better than this one.
I don't recommend this reel.
Triton197 : My thoughts after a year of use.
I was excited to try the Sharky III reel. I typically use high end "name brand" reels but upon arrival I was super impressed with the look and feel of the reel. In my excitement I spooled #50 braid on the reel. We use #50lb braid for a floating worm and we typically fish the floating worm around heavy cover. On my first outing I hooked up with 15 fish with the largest being ~5lbs. This reel did not disappoint, it cast smoothly, the drag is perfect and it can handle the fish/heavy cover like a champ. I am happy with the performance and consistency I have experienced from this reel. Thanks KastKing!
Danielbbeck : I beat it up!! real nice drag system.
I like it held up for so long but the reel is finely broken by a 25 in Bonita slammer broken the anti reverse but I got the fish. The knob on the reel keeps trying tp get away it is small and sneaked loose a few times. The line roller gets stuck Up from corrosion, "brass" roller also needs help like washer or barring.
Rick Belisle : A GREAT Fishing Reel!
Traditionally, I've been a "Penn Man". My other 5 reels are all Penn Reels. I fish almost every day in SW Florida, wade-fishing for Sae Trout, Snook, Redfish, Flounder, Mackerel, and Pompano. I bought this KastKing Sharky just to see if it was any good. I have used it now approx 15 times. It's a GREAT reel! Smooth action, plenty of line, well balanced...I'll DEFINITELY buy another when I need a new reel!
Amazon Customer : Very good for the money but one draw back
Felt this reel is a very good buy for the money based on I own 4 made in Japan Shimano reals to compare them to.
Have not fished with them yet. Chose them over Phlugers due to more BB's and significantly heavier drag.
Will see how they measure up to my Shimano Symmetry reals long considered the best spinning reals under $100.
The only reason why I didn't give the reel four stars was it didn't come with a spare spool. First reel I ever bought that didn't.
Korey + Britt :) : Unsatisfied customer!!!!
Package came damaged on the inside and outside, item was mis packaged, it had clearly been owned before. Spinning reel feels like something is rubbing inside the internals. Not impressed, every Kast King item I have ordered in the past came brand new and in perfect condition. NOT a satisfied customer!!! This was intended to be a Christmas gift, but now that is out of the question.
J. L. Smithling : Finally got it taken apart.
When I spin it, the center shaft goes up and at the bottom of the cycle it locks.
I will grease and put back together but this reel is inferior to many older (some even 40 years older)
This is my second Sharky III and both are more trouble than they are worth.
Edit. These are cheap crap. I no longer have them attached to any rods. I attached the spool to a drill so I can respool other reels that aren't so disappointing. They will go in the bin eventually.
Bob : Bang for Buck
Got this reel for my girlfriend for her birthday as a cheaper alternative as she is a bit more prone to dunking the reel. Have already gone through 2 Shakespeare reels. Very nice feel and has survived one dunking thus far. Haven't used enough to comment on true durability but for the price it seems it's very well worth it.
Update: has survived almost a year and still working great. Have not had to tear down even once.
Barry A. Brown : The BEST Bang for your buck!
This Reel has everything that used to look for in reels that I would pay between $120 and $240 for. So far it is standing up GREAT!
I originally bought one for my father, he picked it out and I was so impressed with it I bought one for myself. Earlier today I ordered my 2nd KastKing rod and reel to use for the Fall Steelhead Run. I guess this will be the REAL test if they hold up as well as my old go-to, Shimano / St. Croix set ups!
Mike Reynolds : Smoothest Spinning Reel I Have Owned at Any Price!
Often, I will post a review of a product that is surprisingly good for the price. I am always thrilled to feel like I received a tremendous value and I want to encourage customers to buy from companies that offer a good product at a great bargain.
As far as this reel goes. I don't know that I have ever used a spinning reel that I felt was as good as this one at any price.
Smooth is the word that comes to mind.
Reeling is effortlessly smooth and balanced.
Casting, also feels amazingly smooth. I put the exact same line on a nice Cabela's brand reel that I have liked for a while. With the same line, rod and lure, I can expect my cast to get out 15-20 percent farther. Being a Kayak fisherman, this is huge to me. I can cover more water and keep my kayak farther from areas that I am sneaking in on. This simply leads to more fish. Which equals more fun.
The drag is also smooth. It doesn't shoot out in spurts. When the fish pulls or when I go too hard on the fish, the drag just gives smoothly. This can certainly help keep light line from breaking and fish on the line.
I have also purchased a KastKing bait casting reel which I feel is similarly high quality.
At the price that KastKing offers these reels, if I need to replace any of my spinning reels, I would replace them with the Sharky III without hesitation. In fact, even if I don't NEED to replace them, I may anyway. This reel is just that good.
Saulo Ventura : Sizes run small, if you want 4000 size, go for 6000
Overall it looks very well made, sturdy and very attractive. The handle is very smooth and I love the braid ready metal spool..
That being said, there's one piece of information that I didn't see anywhere, which would've been good to know...
Their sizes run small
I got the 4000 size because the description said it can hold 200 yards of 40lbs braid, so my thinking was that if I'm putting 20lb braid in it, it can easily hold at least 350 yards.
I got a 200 yard spoll of mustad 20lb braid and it filled up before I could even see the center of the spool.
I'm sure this is a very good reel, but offshore kayaking (which is what I got it for) it's much too small. I'll try it out anyways since I got it, but I'll have that fear of getting spooled...
Kat : Reliable at a great price
Have used a Sharky III 2000 for 2 years fishing 1-2 times per week 40 weeks a year. I have used it primarily in fresh water but have used several times salt water fishing for specs, reds, & flounder. I have it spooled with KastPro #15 and it is a smooth today as it was 2 years ago. Recently bought a 3000 which is working just like the 2000. Will probably add a 4000 for heavier salt water fishing from the surf. I have been using an alternate brand in the same price range but will be converting them to Sharky III's when they need replacing. Just can't beat the quality and reliability at this price.
WL : Great improvement on drag, hard to beat in its price range.
I own several other KastKing reels and they all have high pound drag system. This one is definitely one of the best.It takes about four full turns on the knob to adjust the drag from minimum to maximum, which makes it very precise for different drag requirements. Also it starts vert smoothly under low drag settings. works well for both heavy and light tackles. One of the best improvements I preferred! The braided line ready spool is a plus. For $50, this reel is unbeatable. Highly recommended!

Steve W : Fell Apart!? See Pic
Back it goes. The bail literally fell apart when I was casting. Only had used it a couple of times. The tangles are because i simply opened the bail to cast and didn't realize it fell apart instead of catching and reeling the brail line in.
2footroper : Order the 1000 for ultralight rods.
This reel seems very smooth and tight though I haven't actually used it on the water yet. I wanted to try it on one of my St. Croix ultralight PF rods. I have an Okuma RTX 30 S on one of my other rods and love it but I wanted to give one of these a try. It seems every bit as smooth but time will tell. One thing you should know is I originally bought a 2000 series in this reel thinking it would be a comparable size to the RTX 30 but it was considerably larger. I returned it with zero issues and went with the 1000 series and had it the next day. Gotta love Amazon for that. It is almost exactly the same size as the 30.
It sells itself.
daa69 : Great value, But small!
Believe what a lot of reviews say about these running smaller than most, i got the 5000, it's pretty close to Shimano sahara 4000, much smaller than shimano baitcaster 4500, and much smaller than okuma avenger 5500 baitcaster. I'd say the 5000 for me would be one of my bass, snook reels. Feels like a very decent reel for this price. Judging by this one i would never see myself going any less than the 3000, and that would be for like bream, blue gill, perch, etc. To be fair, my perspective is from bank fishing, dealing with rocks, weeds, pilons, trees, which usually require some stronger line, these are things one could deal with a little better from a boat, or avoid altogether. Unless fishing for small fish, i.e. bream, blue gill, etc. I would never use less than 12lb test, which i think the 4000 maxes out at like 12lb line. Maybe if you have kids, or limited space on like a kayak or depending on your environment and what your fishing for, you could use the 2 or 3000.
Drew Shepard : It was a great reel before it broke.
I got this reel and loved it. Great anti reverse. Silky smooth rotation. Great spool for using braid. Good drag. Sturdy construction.
I couldn’t wait to use it!
So I took it out fishing less than 5 times in total. Worked great!
Then it stopped working correctly! Here’s what happened. I took a cast, reeled it in fine. Took another, and this time the handle wouldn’t turn! Couldn’t believe it. I flipped the drag switch off, and then it started turning, but then it wouldn’t move the spool forward and back, so the line won’t lay correctly.
I think the gears inside must be defective somehow.
I loved the reel, but it shouldn’t break so quickly. I hope KastKing could send me a new one. The new one probably wouldn’t break.
Thanks.
,Drew
Joshua Schlosser : Money well spent
After useing this reel fishing multiple times now I feel like I can give a honest review. The only issue I could find is the line kinda struggles to come off the spool possibly a defect reel. It almost feels like it’s catching on the top spool lip I’ve never had this issue before . At first I thought it might be the braid being to tight but after switching the line out several times it hasn’t made a difference. Due to this issue Kastking has contacted me and offered to replace my reel all I have to do is send my current one back for a replacement(which they paid the return shipping for). So as for customer service hands down the best I’ve ever dealt with.
Brock Hinson : Cheap reel, cheap price, stay away
So I've been using this reel for less than a year, I maintain it regularly, and up until a today everything has been fine. Today the reel stopped spinning, and having opened and lubricated the reel numerous times I figured I've already violated the warranty so I've got to fix it. I open it up to find brass pinion in the middle is shredded and the main cranking gear is trashed. Pay a little more, get a Shimano, a Daiwa, or an Abu Garcia. Until Kastking can put better quality parts into their reels, they aren't worth it.
Dale L Trammell : I wanted to like this reel, but...
For $60 the Sharky III 5000 at 10.5oz and an obscene amount of drag seemed way to good to be passed up. Plus it is advertised as being sealed!
When I received the reel, the packaging was so nice that I thought I hit the jackpot... that’s where the love-affair ended.
Immediately I was taken aback by the “cheapness” of the reel as it felt in hand. No matter I thought, if it fishes well, the “feel” matters less.
I spooled 25# braid on it first and was disappointed with the line lay. It does not come with spool tuning washers, which was another disappointment. Took it fishing once and hated how tiny the knob felt in my hand and that I had several wind knots.
Back to the drawing board, I found a knob from Penn along with their bearings that fit perfectly, so I added that and stripped the old line off, this time putting 10# braid on, hoping the line lay would improve... big nope there, the line lay was terrible again. Took it fishing in the new configuration and found that about every 5-10 casts I’d either have to fix a wind knot or I’d snap a lure off on cast.
At this point I thought it was the 10# braid, so I switched to 12# braid from a different manufacturer and for once had a good line lay on the spool. So I decided to tough my way through the previous problems and paired it with a different rod for casting lighter lures. I caught a slot red drum and the reel worked well, so my confidence was building. Then about 100 or so casts later and several fish later the wind knots and sloppy line lay issues returned.
Fed up with a reel that didn’t seem to be able to handle braid, I spooled some 14# mono and crossed my fingers.
Next trip was almost the same, except instead of windknots the reel could not keep up with the mono and had a bird nest at the base of the spool.
The reel just does not work well when you’re casting lures hundreds of times on a trip. It now lives on my bait catching rod and there it will stay. I thought that the weight combined with the advertised drag would make this an awesome reel for throwing lures over and over again, but was sorely disappointed.
For those keeping track, I spooled 4 different sizes of line from 3 different manufacturers, swapped the knob out, and tried it on different rods... all in the hopes I would like this reel. 2 stars from me because I wanted to use this for more than just letting bait sit and reel in fish.
Pictures are of the upgraded knob and the impact damage of one drop in a parking lot from about 3ft.
If you’re in the market for a solid reel to throw lures all day with, pass on this one and spend $25 more on a Penn Battle II 4000.
Harrison Merrick : For the price cant beat it ! But for 30 or 40 more dollars you cant get say a daiwa bg!!!
I guess it was my fault I wanted a baitrunner which i thought it was but there is a baitrunner so yea my fault entirely. It's a good reel . But a little on the weaker end from the stem connected to the rod could be stronger. I have a lot of wiggle when pulling up fish . I have landed 40+ pound Bat Ray's but it has a bunch of wiggle and if you loosen up the drag to much to where it should be so something dosnt take your rod into the water it feels as if the spool is going to come flying off . But I paired it 65 pound braided line and I use it 2 -3 times a week and it has been realiable so far . And for it being a 5000 it seems a little bit of a small reel but for the money cant beat it .better if you think of it as a 2500 or so and not a 5000.
MC : so far so good. As advertised
Ok guys, so far so good. As advertised. I paired this with a medium heavy action 7' rod (wish it was a match but working on a budget here) and some of your 15# braid. My casting distance has noticeably increased maybe by a third more than I was getting with another name brand spinning reel using 15# braid by another popular name brand using the same rod. Casting small jigs and top water baits in backwater inter coastal areas fishing around shallow flats and oyster beds. I had to adapt to being able to cast a little further but I think I'll get over it. The retrieve is smooth and effortless. I had positive control even with an over slot red fish on. Trout don't stand a chance of trying to hit the oyster bed with this reel any longer either. I can't wait to take this little beast and introduce it to the fresh water brethren. Thumbs up Kastking.
