Questions about KastKing Sharky III Fishing Reel - New Spinning Reel - Carbon Fiber 39.5 LBs Max Drag - 10+1 Stainless BB for Saltwater or Freshwater - Oversize Shaft - Super Value!
Q:
Can this reel switch from left to right hand
Answer: Yes, this reel can switch from left to right with ease. Just about all of these types of spinning reels are capable of that.
Answer: Yes, just unscrew the reel handle and the stop on the other end and swap the side the reel is on.
Answer: Yes I switched mine over
Answer: Yes. You simply remove the handle, and attach it to the other side.
Answer: Yes I fish it as a lefty
Answer: Yes it can
Q:
What size reel would be good for 7' Medium light rod?
Answer: I have 2 of the 4000 models on my 7 foot rods. They work like a charm. The 3000 would probably work just fine but I got the 4000s for the added capacity for long distance fishing from shore.
Answer: What is the weight capacity on the rod? If it's for 35lb then I would definitely go for the 4000. If your pole is for 25lb then get the 3000
Answer: I would go with 3000.
Answer: I got a 3000, works perfectly
Answer: 3000
Q:
Does the sharky III 4000 have a bait clicker?
Answer: I have the 5000 and its line capacity is 190 yards of #40 braid. I put #30 to get 220 yards. The 5000 has the same weight as the 4000, 9.5 oz. Depend on the type of fish to catch, if you catch big jack it probably runs 190 yards of the #40 line out. If line capacity is important to you go with Daiwa BG 4500 and up, or step up to Penn Spinfisher V ssv6500. Hope this help.
Answer: No it does not. Check out the KastKing Sharky Baitfeeder III that reel has a bait clicker.
Q:
Does this reel come preloaded with line?
Answer: No it does not come preloaded with line. You will have to buy your own line.
Answer: No the Sharky III does not come preloaded with line.
Answer: No so I paired it with 15 lb braided line from Kast King as well.
Answer: No! you want to choose the line for the type a Fishing you are doing This is a great real you can do a lot of Different type of fishing with it
Answer: No
Answer: No
Q:
Why is the spool have a long wire inside
Answer: No wire on the spool, there’s a rubber middle section so your braid won’t slip when spooling
Q:
Will this reel catch catatafeesh?
Answer: Small catfish. 3000 up would be a better size.
Answer: Use mine for steelhead and salmon. Works great . Like the drag.
Answer: Yes, but only if using Lemmiwinks bait.
Answer: Yes it will!!!
Answer: Yes
Q:
Sharky III bail's wont close by rotating the handle after casting, is that normal? or its manual bail system?
Answer: My Sharky 3 bail will close by turning the handle. A drop of oil may fix this. But using the handle to “automatically” close the bail really isn’t a good practice. It can induce a “loose spot” in your line that can cause birds nest when casting, and is actually kinda hard on the reel. I suggest manually closing the bail every time.....you and your reel will love it!!
Answer: It is normal.
Q:
When will this be available for shipping to Singapore? Currently I'm unable to do so.
Q:
what line should i use for the 5000 aim doing freshwater fishing for bass and pike
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: We would recommend kastPro or Super Power braid. We do have a Premium Monofilament if you prefer mono. Pair your line weight with your rod and the type of fish you are looking to catch. 30-50lb should be good for Mucky or Pike.
Answer: I spooled mine with 30 lb Kastking Superpower braid.
Q:
Is kastking sharky 3 3000 sold out?

Q:
What is the difference between 3000 4000 ect.
Answer: The 3000 weighs 9.4oz the 4000 weighs 10.5oz
Answer: Mostly line capacity but there is a bit of a size difference. They are smaller than most reels though. I have the 5000 and it's close to the size of my Pflueger Supreme XT 35.
Q:
What size would you recommend for the (somewhat rough) north florida surf? i use a shakespeare ugly stik 10' medium-heavy surf rod.
Answer: It’s medium sized reel.I didn’t use it yet. Maybe not bad.
Answer: Sharky BF 6000
Q:
Can this reel be used for trolling with a down rigger?
Answer: Hi David,
Answer: It could be but depending on the species of fish you may want to go a bigger size in the reel. I use this for drop shot here in northern cal. And it capable of catching largemouth bass as well as spotted bass up to 5,6 Lbs.
Answer: Don't see why not, but depending on how deep, you might need thicker lines.
Q:
Can I buy a spare spool for this reel? I couldn’t find a spare spool when I searched.
Q:
I looking for Rod for Sharky 3 1000 telekopic?and for ultra light fishing
Answer: I would recommend a mini ugly stick it's super sensitive and durable

Answer: Hi,
Answer: I'm sure you can but you won't get 200 yards of braided line at 50lb test on it

Q:
What size for steelhead fishing, 10-12# line?
Answer: The 3000 is a good all around size
Answer: I used 35lbs braided line for my main line and 17lbs flourocarbon for my leader.
Q:
Which size for a 6 ft rod for small snapper and jacks?
Answer: Get the Sharky III 5000 model would definitely fit a smaller 6’Rod and it’s not bulky at all would be perfect for your needs ????

Q:
When will a 1000 size be available?
Q:
Would this be a good soft bait reel, like worms or tubes for bass fing in freshwater?
Answer: Yes this would be a good reel for soft plastics like worms and tubes. I just recently purchased one of these for the same purpose have been very happy with the reel so far.
Answer: I don't see why not. It cast smooth and has a great retrieval.
Answer: Absolutely! 75% of what we use it for.
Answer: Yes great choice.
Q:
Does reel fit berrypro surf fishing rod https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/b07prsss7j/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=a200b1kk9ox8jb&psc=1
Answer: I'm afraid I have to say, don't buy this reel. I now own 2 and will eventually replace them. The 39.5 lb drag that I was amazed by before purchase just makes a wrong noise. It never seemed right and after a couple fish i guess has turned into trash.
Answer: The Sharky 3 5000 is small for a rod over 8ft long. It’s very small for a 5000. The bait feeder models are larger. (. The 5000 baitfeeder and 5000 non baitfeeder are not the same size). I would go with the 6000 baitfeeder
Answer: yes
Q:
I need a bigger knob that will fit this reel, can anyone tell me wbat will work ?
Answer: Contact the company who made it.
Q:
Whats the best reel and rod set up for catfish and max line weight?
Answer: Depending on the size of cats you're going for, I'd use a size 4000 or 5000 reel with a heavy size KastKing catfish rod. Use 50,65 or 80 lb. braid
Answer: The two largest KastKing Sharky's would be in my opinion best suited. Cat's can get pretty big, really tax your entire rig system. Consult the catfish fishing forums for specifics regarding appropriate rigging, lines, leaders and especially the rod. I am primarily an inshore, light rigged saltwater angler and occasional trout hunter.
Q:
Is this reel salt water rated?
Answer: Its utter trash. I only salt water fish. Mine lasted fights with 2 snook and 1 redfish before the drag just quit working. All of this stuff - the rods, the reels that is kastking or sougilygang is all just trash. Spend a little extra for a Penn Fierce combo which is 10x the quality.
Answer: It is rated for salt water use. I have used it for a year now and been happy with it for the price
Answer: I believe it says that in the description. That's is why I bought it--to use in salt water.
Answer: I have the Sharky Baitfeeder 111 6000 on a 10' mh surf rod & like it very much, No Problems
Answer: I bought this mainly for saltwater fishing and it has served me well so far. After fishing just tighten the drag, rinse (don't sock) thoroughly and then leave to dry. Once dried up, release the drag and store till next trip. Hope this helps.
Answer: Yes it is
Answer: Yes it is.

Answer: It will! Caught GT with this on 11 ft rod, with no problem
Answer: yes it will
Q:
Can this take down a smaller tuna
Answer: Mine broke the 10th time I used it. I wouldn't put any faith in these reels.
Q:
I didn't get the right reel i got a bait runner instead of a sharky3 5000
Answer: Sounds like you need to go back to customer service of the supplier.
Q:
Will the 3000 size hold and perform with 12lb mono ok ? I noticed it recommends 10lb at the highest...i'll be using trilene big game 12lb.
Answer: I got 12# on one of mine. Can't put as much, but the reel seems to work just fine, casting and retrieving.

Answer: None. It's junk
Q:
Would the 5000 Sharky be compatible with a 12 foot surfcasting rod?
Answer: Hi Tom,
Answer: In my opinion, no, you need a minumim 6000 series reeal for a surf rod.
Q:
What's the max size braid line can the 5000 reel handle?
Answer: It's not a huge reel so i would stick with 30-40 lbs max otherwise you won't have a whole lot of line on the reel.
Answer: 40 to 50 lb Max! I use 40lb personally myself And I think that works good with the drag rating of the real!!
Answer: All braid has a different thickness the braid I use I can put up to 80lbs and be fine just depends what your using it for
Q:
What size would you recommend for a 10’ surf casting rod setup for stripers? I will mainly be throwing pencil poppers. Thanks!
Answer: The 5000 is the largest and would be considered to small for that set up. Take a look at the 8000 and 10,000 Sharky II
Answer: It looks like a good reel but l live in Vt. We don’t start fishing until April.
Q:
What is the mono line capacity of the 2000 size reel?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I'm not sure, I have the 4000
Answer: I don't know I have the 4000.
Q:
Can this be used in Freshwater?
Answer: Absolutely. Any reel can be used in freshwater, it's saltwater that can be tough on reels with mostly corrosive parts.

Answer: Yes it can. It's a Fresh/Salt water reel.
Answer: Yes. Great reel for both.
Q:
When is the sharky 3 300O going to be available
Q:
Pairing the 4000 w/ the ugly Stik elite 7’ medium heavy for spotted sea bass. What’s best braided line for this combo?
Answer: 30lb braid 50lb mono leader
Answer: Do you like chocolate, strawberry or vanilla? They are all good. Get one that will handle the weight of your intended catch and pick a brand that appeals to you for whatever reason.
Answer: I personally use 30lb with mine.
Q:
I have a 7ft heavy penn pole/rod, i plan to fish with it off of the pier and also deep-sea fish with it... which Reel do you guys recommend
Answer: We would recommend the largest size, the 5000.
Answer: 5000
Q:
What kind of rod works with the 4000? Is this overkill for small lakes? Bass and trout?
Answer: Yes, i think its overkill for small lakes. I got the 2000 myself and its perfect for even inshore saltwater fishing. I personally think it holds more line for a 2000 then other brands out there.
Q:
Can the handle be switched from for left or right handed?
Answer: Yes ambidextrous
Answer: Yes.
Q:
Which is best for primarily bass fishing? I am torn between the 2000 and 3000, opinions?
Answer: I have the 5000 it is super lite. Super fast and super strong. I wouldn't get the 2000 or the 3000 because the 5000 is good for any type of fishing. I have 135 rods with penn , king cast, shimano and some other and i can tell u this is one of my favorite. Thanks
Answer: Most of the bass and catfish I catch are 1 to 3 pounds, occasionally up to 5. For my purposes, the 3000 is just perfect!
Answer: Hi there,
Answer: 2000
Answer: 2000
Q:
When are more available?
Answer: Never
Q:
I just got into bass fishing i wanna know which size reel should i get and should i got for a medium light are just medium rod?
Answer: Strip Bass fishing, if you're surf casting and not out of a pier, you could do a medium light with a 3000 sharky, but for boat and pier fishing I suggest a medium heavy set up along with a 3000 series should be a lot easier to get the fish in, but how much fun and experience you want to have with the fight is up to you
Answer: I have the 4000 series, but its for the ocean and western rivers where a typical salmon is 15 lbs or more and pulls like hell. I wind it with BIG GAME 12 lb test. Smaller version of this reel is better for bass. But many use a levelwind style for bass. It should be sized with your line type.
Answer: The Sharky III 3000 is a great universal size for most bass fishing. It would pair nicely with a medium light or medium rod. You would want to consider the size of fish you are looking to catch when selecting the rod type.
Answer: I use a light rod with the 2000 style and it works just fine with it. I'm pretty sure it will work with a medium rod just as well.
Answer: I use this on a drop shot rod here in nor cal. It’s a very nice reel plenty of drag and the 200 is the size I use.
Q:
4000 or 3000
Answer: It really depends on your application. I have the 4000 and I feel that the overall size is smaller compared to other manufacturer’s size 4000 reels.
Answer: 3000
Q:
Where is it made
Answer: Designed in US. Made in China.
Answer: China
Q:
What weight line will it hold?
Answer: I use 25# KastKing KastPro Braided Line on my Sharky3 3000, and it casts smooth as butter.. There is a chart that will tell you the line capacity of each model at the bottom of the product page. It really depends on what style of fishing you are gonna do, which model you choose, and what type of line you choose. each type of line has a different diameter..
Q:
I recently bought the Sharky 3 1,000 and had trouble spoiling it off the bat. The line stays in the bottom. Can someone please help?
Answer: I don’t quite get what your referring too . Spoiling a reel is pretty explanatory?.....
Product reviews of KastKing Sharky III Fishing Reel - New Spinning Reel - Carbon Fiber 39.5 LBs Max Drag - 10+1 Stainless BB for Saltwater or Freshwater - Oversize Shaft - Super Value!
Ryan : Best reel I’ve ever owned
Absolutely the best reel I’ve owned. I’ve used this thing 3-5 days a week for 12 of the last 18 months and it has held up superbly. Smooth reeling, good bail action and very durable. There’s nothing in stores at this price range that can even come close to how good this reel is. I really didn’t expect to get a product I loved so much, but here we are. I cannot recommend this enough to beginners or hobbyists who just want something that is reliable and no-fuss.
WallyMonkey : Wow, out of the box it’s amazingly smooth compared to a Shimano Stella!
Ordered and received today. Was really
Surprised at how smooth and refined this reel feels! I have other coffee grinder types also in my aresenal, but for the price, I’m impressed so far. I hope it does live up to all the hype and durability as many YouTube videos and the reviews say.
I’ll leave it at a 5 star rating for now (based on initial perception out of the box) until I actually get it out and use it a bit. Let’s hope this graphite bodied reel can handle a 25” Dorado or Yellowtail if I don’t get spooled! It definitely has the drag specs/ capability to do so! I’ll update the review if anything goes awry.
Thanks Kastking! Looking forward to abusing this little guy soon. FYI, I purchased the 3000 sized reel.
Melissa : An ok reel for saltwater use
This reel is pretty good, but honestly, I feel like there are better reels in a similar price range. This reel is not as smooth as my Daiwa Exceler, which on Amazon is in the same price range. A good saltwater safe reel in the same price range that is smoother is the Okuma Epixor. I still am satisfied with my purchase, but there are some reels that I would put a little above it in this price range. Now saying that, they are more at other stores. Now for the reel itself. I have had this reel a little more than a year now, using it mostly for saltwater. I have caught many fish with it now. I currently have it paired with an Ugly Stik Elite, formerly an Ugly Stik GX2. It has held up to being splashed and occasionally dropped in sand. It still is going strong today, despite a few little annoyance. The reel has begun to make a strange clicking sound when you turn the handle. I have heard of this happening with many Kastking reels, so it appears that it is not just something with my particular reel. Also, the drag has stopped clicking. That stuff honestly doesn’t impact its performance, it just is annoying. Would I buy this reel again? Maybe, but I probably would go with the less expensive and lighter Valiant Eagle if getting another Kastking spinning reel.
Johnny L. Nolan : Seems strong
Send to be a nice reel. It isn't what I was expecting from reading the line size it will handle. It doesn't hold 20 lb monofilament. It is a maximum of 16. Maybe I read stuff wrong! But was expecting a larger reel size. Overall I think it will be a good reel in the long run! Can't fault the company for my mistake......
David L : One of the smoothest reel with great value..
One of the best value reel I have this year (2018) for under $55. However, time will tell. For now it is worth to take a look if you are looking for a new spinning reel. The carbon drag, water resistance, braid ready, screw in handle are convenience few features that is worth to mention. This reel is very smooth and butter than my other new reels from Daiwa (Legalis LT, Fuego LT ) and Okuma. However, Daiwa LT reels are lighter and cost more. But it does mean that Sharky III is heavy. Sharky 3 is a lot lighter than the Penn and it is also well built.
So far no cons. I hope it will last a few seasons.

Cathie D. : Nice braid ready reel
I bought this mainly for freshwater bass fishing and some shoreline saltwater fishing. A small but nice thing is that it comes ready to spool braid line on it. No worries about the braid slipping or tying a leader on first...just spool it on. I've got the 4000 model and it casts and reels in very smoothly. So far I'm very pleased with it. Definitely much better than other reels at this price. Just be sure to clean it properly when saltwater fishing (don't blast the reel with water, just wipe it down).
Yegjesh : Thin support for manuals and repair parts.
I have always been a Shimano snob but switched to Kastking due to the cost value / bought 5 different models of reels over three years time with no complaint. This model reel worked perfect for three years of heavy use (probably 15k+ casts in three years) - I would rate it highly for that alone. The bail broke so I looked on line to determine how to order a replacement. They have a very thin section of their site dedicated to parts / manuals and I had to leave a comment for site feedback on figuring out how to order a bail. They did respond but the awkward method you need to use to get one ordered just reinforced in my mind that this is not a concern of their business model. In 2021 any company selling anything should have the manuals and all the part numbers listed and tie that into their ordering system. I’m not posting this as a means to guilt the company to send me a free bail or say they have poor quality products - just a warning to those that like to have a repair parts safety net there for them to avoid disposing of a perfectly good reel. The experience left me unsettled to the point that I will throwing out the reel and switching back to Shimano to replace it ☹️
Bob : Bang for Buck
Got this reel for my girlfriend for her birthday as a cheaper alternative as she is a bit more prone to dunking the reel. Have already gone through 2 Shakespeare reels. Very nice feel and has survived one dunking thus far. Haven't used enough to comment on true durability but for the price it seems it's very well worth it.
Update: has survived almost a year and still working great. Have not had to tear down even once.
2footroper : Order the 1000 for ultralight rods.
This reel seems very smooth and tight though I haven't actually used it on the water yet. I wanted to try it on one of my St. Croix ultralight PF rods. I have an Okuma RTX 30 S on one of my other rods and love it but I wanted to give one of these a try. It seems every bit as smooth but time will tell. One thing you should know is I originally bought a 2000 series in this reel thinking it would be a comparable size to the RTX 30 but it was considerably larger. I returned it with zero issues and went with the 1000 series and had it the next day. Gotta love Amazon for that. It is almost exactly the same size as the 30.
Capt. RL : Not a 5000 size reel, not even close
I took the risk and purchased a couple of these in 5000 size.. What I received isn't any bigger than a standard 3000 reel. If this is their 5000 size, it has no line capacity whatsoever. As a 30 year saltwater guide, I've never seen a 5000 spinning reel half sized like this one. Very discouraging after reading all the reviews. I'll be happy to change my review if I receive a 5000 size reel following the standard of proper size with the rest of the spinning reel market.
Philip : I Own 4 Now
I love these reals and own: 1000x1, 2000x2, and 3000x1, All Spinning
The quality is simply outstanding at an excellent price. I like that they are an American company and yes they do import components in order to be competitive. The rubber grip on the spool is high end. The powder coating and finish is also very high end. I have never had the bail jam open or fail to close. The drag so smooth and the adjustment is the right amount of turn from easy to fight, plus I have to hear an audible drag. The spool release switch is right where it should be located. The reals are on the heavy side compared to a 10$ or a $300 real but the quality far outweighs a single extra ounce. I like having color choices so I can quickly identify the setup I want to use. I do not give many product reviews unless they are very deserving.
Reynaldo Torres : ABSOLUTE GARBAGE !!! DO NOT BUY !!! BAIL HITS TOP OF SPOOL !!!
I really wanted to love this reel. USA retailer, good quality etc, but I can’t recommend it at all. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to use it right away and by the time I did the return window was closed. Here’s the problem and you can see by the photos as well. When the spool is at the top point of its travel and you try to open up the bail it will hit the top of the spool/drag adjustment. Even worse is if it doesn’t hit the top of the spool, but is very close it will cause tangles in the line which don’t always notice at first and then all of a sudden you got a cast and you have a big birds nest on it. This happened to me and caused me to lose literally have a spool of brand new braid which you know isn’t particularly cheap. The only way to help the situation is to tighten the drag so far down that it’s super tight and that will give it a little bit more clearance for the bail. This is completely unacceptable. I contacted Kast king for help, but got zero response and then I tried to return it but the return window for Amazon was closed. I can’t believe I’m the only person who has this problem. So unfortunately as much as I wanted to love this real I can’t and since Kast King never responded to my email I cannot give their customer service a good recommendation either. If this changes in the future I will update my review but as of now I will never buy another Kast King product
Sinbad : Hand the kids fishing rods at the beach - Rinse gear at the end of the day - Repeat!
This Sharky III has been out with me and fam on several fishing trips. It’s been abused under kids hands, dropped in the sand when unpacking, dropped on the surf because kiddo was scared when the perch came off the hook and all 5” of the flopping fish was “attacking” him. Rinsed the reel with sea water and was surprised I didn’t need to break down the reel to clean off every grain of sand. The reel still ran as smooth as if was right out of the box. I can’t say the same for the other brand reels which felt like grinding pepper. Planned on replacing my “pepper grinders” with Sharky reels in the very near future.
Update: Aug 17, 2019
Hmm, there's an Amazon box on my porch. What could it be (Wink)!
Update: Aug 25, 2019
I just shook the reel to remove loose sand and fished the rest of the day with sand on the reel. It still ran smooth the entire time (photo)... even with fish on the line :)
David : It's been holding up as my surf fishing rod for ...
It's been holding up as my surf fishing rod for about 2 months. It get lots of salt water on it but I lube it up and heavily rinse it with fresh water afterward.
Will update if things go wrong.
indianaj222 : Buttery smooth, lightweight, high quality, and best of all...relatively inexpensive
This is my first Kast King reel. I have been looking at them on Amazon for quite a while but I was honestly a bit skeptical. I own Daiwa, Shimano, and Abu Garcia reels. Let me tell you....don't hesitate! This reel is the best spinning reel of the lot! It is buttery smooth and has good ergonomics. I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. This reel is actually much lighter than some of my more expensive reels. I don't know how Kast King is making such a great product for low prices, but I sure hope they stay this way. They will have a customer for life if so.

Clinton Fisher : Nothing special, but not bad either
TL;DR
After using it for 8 months all I have to say is it's an alright reel, but nothing special either. Fished saltwater for 18 years, and honestly didn't find anything remarkable about it, just a normal reel in all respects. It works alright for what it is, I honestly do not believe the reel extra bearings matter all that much (only so many places you can place a bearing) at least in the sense where it would improve the reels performance.
It's not a bad reel, but it's not an amazing reel either, I would say for $50 you really can't go wrong but don't expect $100+ quality, it's worth the asking price IMHO but it's not a high end reel sold for cheap.
Diana : Good Southern California surf fishing reel.
I use the Sharky III on a nine foot steelhead rod for fishing the California Surf. The reel is handling the salt and surf conditions very well. The casting is smooth and the casting distance allows me to reach the areas where the fish hang out. I am using 30lb Kastking braid and the spool capacity is very good. Overall this reel is working great.
Kindle Customer : Right in the box it impressed me
I buy lots of reels, Daiwa, Shimano and Penn mainly. I expected little for a $50 reel but this is like others twice that price. Well packaged. I would have liked a slightly thinner spool spacer due to the very thin line i use(berkley x9) but will call the company and see if i can get one. nice reel.
Eric Wiaderny : Tight lines my fam ;)
Just received this reel couple days ago and right after work today I was able to stop by a shop to grab some line to get the reel wet and slime from the fish. Loading line is not a stress factor what so ever. The reel got a rubber section with multiple grip spots so your line won’t slip around after the first few turn to toss line on after that it was fast and furious with no miss laps.
Went to a few local pond to find some lbs and all I can say it’s smooth tossed some 3-4” swim baits and other plastic and end up catching a 13.5” and 16” lmb. Drag setting is great and no lock ups.
Highly recommend getting it.
Richard : The reel has a monster spool and holds a lot ...
The reel has a monster spool and holds a lot of line. With 10# braided splder wire it took over 300 yards. So if you are going to use braided line you probably should back it with mono. The reel requires considerable force to close after casting. Very smooth and balanced retrieve. If the bail closer was more traditional I would have given it 5 stars.
Long : Great reel for the money
I have never left a review on a product but thought this reel deserved it. I own many quality reels such as multiple Stradic ci4 + reels. I bought this reel as a cheap reel to throw in the back of the car after seeing the good reviews. I think for the money this is an excellent purchase, it is almost as smooth as my Stradic reels and not far off in weight. I have already used it in fresh and salt water and caught dozens of fish on it and it has help up good. I have owned some other reels too made by abu Garcia and pflueger both above this price point and I would buy this reel over those. Thy don’t hold up to saltwater nearly as good as this and are heavier and not as smooth. The drag doesn’t come out as smooth as my expensive reels on the kastking and some of the parts are made with cheaper materials but it is very comparable to more expensive reels for the price point and if you are thinking about purchasing it I would get it.

WL : Great improvement on drag, hard to beat in its price range.
I own several other KastKing reels and they all have high pound drag system. This one is definitely one of the best.It takes about four full turns on the knob to adjust the drag from minimum to maximum, which makes it very precise for different drag requirements. Also it starts vert smoothly under low drag settings. works well for both heavy and light tackles. One of the best improvements I preferred! The braided line ready spool is a plus. For $50, this reel is unbeatable. Highly recommended!
Kong Lee : Temper your expectations accordingly.
Heavier than expected and not quite as smooth as my Shimano NASCI, but for half the price I can't be mad. I'll update once I actually start to use it in the water, but initial impression is good. It's what you would expect from a $50 reel. Just don't expect it to match up to reels in the $100 range.
Update: I tried it in the water today and it's just an ok reel. I put 15lb braided lines on it and I was surprised how much of an effort it takes to operate the reel. Like I said in my original post, don't expect the smoothness and weight of a $100 reel.
Danielbbeck : I beat it up!! real nice drag system.
I like it held up for so long but the reel is finely broken by a 25 in Bonita slammer broken the anti reverse but I got the fish. The knob on the reel keeps trying tp get away it is small and sneaked loose a few times. The line roller gets stuck Up from corrosion, "brass" roller also needs help like washer or barring.
Korey Cox : Great for the price!
Have taken it both saltwater an fresh water fishing. Sadly the saltwater trip was a sunk but the reel worked wonderfully paired with a 10' Penn Squadron rod. On the fresh water trip it pulled in countless cat fish with ease(Paired on a 6' Shimano FX). I had to loosen the drag to allow my children (3&4 years old) to enjoy the fight a little. I highly recommend this reel the castablility is amazing and the retrieve is silky smooth with great line lay! Can't wait to try more from KastKing

BosHog : Excellent value spinning reel
We all know spinning reels vary in price from $20 up to and well past $1,000. How do you choose? I knew the basics, ball bearings, drag type, anti-reversing design, etc. That doesn't narrow the selection down much. I read a few comments on fishing forums about the Sharky III and then followed up reading the reviews here. I thought, let's give it a try. I ordered two (3000 model), one for the boat and one for the car.
I fish freshwater, the Great Lakes and its rivers, primarily for Walleyes and Pike. I typically pick up cats and sheephead (freshwater Drums for those outside the Great Lakes) like most of us do and if you ever hooked into a sheephead, you know you are likely in for a good fight. The Sharky III performs perfectly catching any of the fish I've hooked into. I run 8 lbs. mono on a 6'6" medium action rod and use 36", fluorocarbon leaders. The wide drag range of the Sharky III makes catching these bigger fish fun and worry-free. The Sharky III holds its drag setting, very important, I've yet to break a line.
I've even used the Sharky III for jigging Crappie, Perch, and Walleye.

Weezy Jefferson : Great reel, unbeatable price!
I'm new to inshore fishing. I have a Penn Fierce II combo and needed a reel for a rod that I already had. I did not want to go too crazy spending money on my new hobby, but I also want quality fishing gear. After researching many reels and seeing that the Kastking Sharky reels receive consistently good reviews, I compared them to other name brands and was first sold on the Sharky's quality, then on its unbeatable price. Caught redfish and perch in backwaters along the Texas coast. Handled fish and currents well. No luck yet catching any fist yet from the beaches and jetties along the open Gulf, but I've been pleased with casting distance, smooth retrieve, handling power, and sensitivity. I definitely recommend this reel to anyone.
ShemR : Puzzled
Puzzled. Many positive reviews, so I thought it was a good buy...how wrong I was.
I found the reel to be very loud (I was using a braid) and not as smooth as I expected so I thought perhaps it was my braided line so I switched to the nylon and that’s where I found that now reel was even worse.
Tangeled my line, after few times I give up! Switched to my older Daiwa and finally could enjoy my fishing!
In all fairness I might had have a bad lemon but when I buy a NEW product expecting to have a good time but a bad product ruins what should be a relaxing trip I’m going elsewhere.
Christopher A Fileccia : Sweet reels for a great price!
Love Kastking products. Great value for the money. This reel rocks. Casts great and reeling is smooth as butter. That drag has incredible stopping power if you use it right.
I own two of these. A 1000 and 3000. The 3000 is my favorite. My only complaint was the 1000 was a bit too heavy to pair with my ultra light rods for trout.

Steve W : Fell Apart!? See Pic
Back it goes. The bail literally fell apart when I was casting. Only had used it a couple of times. The tangles are because i simply opened the bail to cast and didn't realize it fell apart instead of catching and reeling the brail line in.

Scott B. : Awesome reel!
I was hesitant prior to purchasing, but I'm so glad I did. This thing is a smooth-casting machine. The drag is solid and it holds 300 yards of 40lb Power Pro easily. It is a little smaller than I was expecting, but there have been no issues with inshore and light offshore fishing action. I will likely purchase at least one more of these, as well as a larger model if I can find one. It compares well with Okuma and Pflueger reels of the same size.
alex : Overrated reel only popular online
I used this reel and another $100 Daiwa BG reel and a few cheap reels.
This reel is better than the $10 cheap reels, but a lot worse than the $100 Daiwa reel. It is not very smooth.
When you reel in with a 5oz sinker, you can feel it is not smooth.
I don't see other friends using this one. Their Daiwa and Shimano reels at similar prices are better than this one.
I don't recommend this reel.
yolchie : PERFECTION!
I've owned countless spinning reels from countless manufacturers over my last 40 years of fishing. I had never heard of KastKing until doing a random Amazon search one day...and now I'm beyond thrilled to have discovered this company!
This reel has absolutely everything you could ever want in a great reel: Super smooth, super quiet, fast, very durable, tight fit and finish, all mechanical pieces work flawlessly, the drag is flawless, handle is perfect. Just...everything.
This reel is so good that I purchased 2 of them, 2 of their rods (also flawless), their big orange tackle bag (flawless), and a couple other of their smaller items. Next Spring, I will buy 2 more identical reels and rods for quick switching of lures. This reel paired with their 7.5 foot medium heavy rod works perfectly for everything from worming, jigging, topwater, spinnerbait, crankbait...you name it!
Thank you, KastKing! You have earned a lifetime fan!
Robert Johnson : Should NOT to be used in saltwater
Not sure if I got a dud, all I can say is based on my experience, it's not a great choice for saltwater. I'm definitely not new to fishing and have at least two dozen rod/reels
I have been kayak fishing in the Atlantic for a few hours each morning for the past 5 years I religiously rinse all my gear with fresh water after each use. This review is not based on neglect or inexperience.
I loved this reel at first and was very impressed by the feel and smooth action. Two weeks later the smoothness was gone. Three weeks in and it started making so much noise I was spooking the fish just reeling in. I have had to lube it weekly in order for the reel to remain usable. Today, after one month and a week of ownership, it's unusable. I had to switch to one of my old rods since last week. I took the kastking out today only to find it had at least one bearing completely siezed.
If you're fishing in saltwater BEWARE, you've been warned.
--Update--
Since I couldn't return it I figured I would disect it hoping I could replace the bad bearing. I found sand and water had entered into the main body of the reel. The locking bearings was where I found the problem. I cleaned, lubed, and reassembled it. Not as good as new but smooth and definitely usable again. Only time will tell how long before another complete disassembly is required.
Eddy Tor : Surf, rinse, a little WD40, good to go.
This is my surf and rockfish catching reel. Used it in the surf for perch, off rocks and jetties for rock fish. I took a chance on buying it January of 2018 and passing on the spendier brand names and have been very happy with. I have had it in the surf with sand swirling in the water, still works. I had a couple of the “brand reels” fail doing that before. I mean, you don’t intend to do but, if you in the surf sooner or later your reel will go in. Climbing down a cliff on the Oregon coast once, I slipped and face planted, (embarrassing when you’re with friends), rod and reel submerged in mud. I rinsed it of and fished it the whole day.
Surf, home, rinse, dry, a little wd40, good to go.
Very pleased with this reel.
Saulo Ventura : Sizes run small, if you want 4000 size, go for 6000
Overall it looks very well made, sturdy and very attractive. The handle is very smooth and I love the braid ready metal spool..
That being said, there's one piece of information that I didn't see anywhere, which would've been good to know...
Their sizes run small
I got the 4000 size because the description said it can hold 200 yards of 40lbs braid, so my thinking was that if I'm putting 20lb braid in it, it can easily hold at least 350 yards.
I got a 200 yard spoll of mustad 20lb braid and it filled up before I could even see the center of the spool.
I'm sure this is a very good reel, but offshore kayaking (which is what I got it for) it's much too small. I'll try it out anyways since I got it, but I'll have that fear of getting spooled...
Eric Wiaderny : Tight lines my fam ;)

Went to a few local pond to find some lbs and all I can say it’s smooth tossed some 3-4” swim baits and other plastic and end up catching a 13.5” and 16” lmb. Drag setting is great and no lock ups.
Highly recommend getting it.
Dale Solomon : Give it a try
I have a lot of experience fishing. I have competed at a very high level of fishing. I was just looking for an inexpensive basic spinning real. I was very surprised at the quality of this spinning real. I have compared it to my name brand, more expensive reels, and wished I would have known about this brand when I was paying three times for the same quality of gear. It is smooth with a smooth drag system. I would definitely recommend this product for people to try before spending more for a product that doesn't function as well.
you can compare the product price from Costco, wayfair, bestbuy, lowes, target, homedepot, Walmart, ebay, amazon to find the best price for you
